My Skyline order has always been the same, three cheese conies,
no onion, no mustard. But the other day a friend
got me to try one with everything on it. It
was amazing. That little dash of mustard and the snap
of those diced onions just blew me away. I didn't
know what I was missing. From now on, when I

Welcome back into our show as the Wildcats get set
to return the field. Return to the field for the
first kickoff under the lights of the season against Eastern
Michigan on Saturday night, seven thirty Eastern time kick on
espn U and coach Mark Stoops has moved in alongside
as his team gets back at it. And that always
(05:36):
means a practice on Monday. Your main works done on
Tuesdays and Wednesdays, I guess. But what how to go today?
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Yeah, Tom, you know, typical Monday. You know, we got
to watch a lot of film to watch and get
some things corrected. And you know, greatly appreciate our team's
attitude and the way they're you know, take coaching and
you know we learn from our mistakes and try to
move forwards. So I challenged them, you know, throughout the
summer and always I felt like, you know, in the
(06:06):
past and you know, you have to learn from the
mistakes as I just said. But you know, even last year,
I felt like after some tough losses, I felt like
it really got to us, and I really tried to
hammer that with the team that we're going to come
in here and every Monday I address them and you know,
there's gonna be big victories and there could be some
tough losses, but either way, we have to hit the
(06:28):
reset button because you know, the fans in the media
and doing things like I have to do right here
on Monday night. You know, that's all part of it.
But for them, we have to move on very quickly
and have a great Monday and have a good practice.
They did that and we're looking forward to just getting better.
Speaker 5 (06:45):
I'm sure they can look at that. Tay probably walked
off the field feeling this way that they had a
great chance to get a big win there. So they'll
have other chances like that. So it's important to learn
from it.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Yeah, exactly, and you know, and you know you can
take that big picture. You know, we did a lot
of good things against a very good football team, a
team that has every opportunity to make it to the playoffs.
We played them very very good in a lot of ways,
and in ways we fell short. It's going to happen
each and every week.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
I think.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
Situationally, again, there's things that we could take from there.
We can't possibly go through every scenario that we're going
to have throughout the season. Our football IQ has to
be highed just little things with alignments and certain things
that we have to just like you said, learn from
and push on.
Speaker 5 (07:33):
We'll start with the quarterback situation because that's what fans
are always most interested in Zach gets hurt late in
that game, Cutter comes in, plays a couple of series.
Where are you now with the quarterback situation?
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Yeah, I mean, as I addressed it in my news
conference today. You know, with Cutter, it's just like you've
heard me say this through the years, because I'm not
going to throw one player under the bus, and I've
said it for many years. You never want any of
our players to get hurt. But with somebody getting hurt,
it excites you to see the next person step up,
(08:07):
you know. And so Cutter got an opportunity to play
in that game, He's clearly going to get an opportunity
in this game. I'm not going to say on Monday
afternoon that that he's going to be the starter because
that's not fair to Zach either. And I need to
see his health, see what he's doing. But I could
clearly say that that I know Cutter is going to play.
Speaker 5 (08:25):
You know, So what since we know that he got
again a couple of series late. He got in late
last season, gave you a really strong performance in that
second half down at Texas started against Louisville, had a
rough day there, but he was a true freshman in
a tough spot.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
So what does he need to learn from his experience
last year?
Speaker 3 (08:45):
He learned a great deal. He will tell you that.
You know, going into that situation last year was very difficult.
We had to see, you know, what he was all
about and had to give him that opportunity. And he
did very well under the circumstances. Had a rough game
in the last game of the year. But but he's
learned so much from that, you know, you know, he's
(09:07):
just he's grown. He knows the offense so much better
now he's a year older, he's gotten a lot more reps,
and he's much more prepared. He you know, he and
I were talking about that a couple of weeks ago,
you know, just and he kind of chuckled about, you know,
the the growth that he's made, and he's only going
to get better. He's going to get better with every opportunity,
with every week.
Speaker 5 (09:27):
Yeah, he came over one day. I was sitting on
one of the benches after practice, waiting for the player
interviews to start, and he was going to be one
of them, and he came over and sat down and
just asked who I was going, And he said, you
really well, and he just was just kind of remembering
how much he enjoyed the sport of football. Yeah, and
it was just really feeling good about where he was.
(09:47):
So you like to hear that from any players.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Yeah, without a doubt, and you know he's just he's
embracing it. You know, he knows he still has a
lot to learn. And you know, you watch watched a
few series, so that game last night, late the second
half and you watch those quarterbacks and how many years
into their system are they right now? And it's quite
amazing the level that they play at and just goes
(10:11):
to show you that you talk about you know one
week one, you know one year, two years, three years,
four years, I mean that that growth is going to happen,
you know, for a long time to come.
Speaker 5 (10:24):

Welcome back into the Mark Stoop Show presented by UK Healthcare,
and we'll come back to a little bit more discussion
of the quarterbacks that have been wanted to hit on
a few other topics on the defensive side of the ball,
some good things, certainly, I know. The big plays are
what probably jumped out when you watch the tape that
the big plays Old Miss.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
Guy, Yeah, there was too many explosive plays. We played
so many plays good that that it's you know, it's
it's like it's mind blowing to us, you know what,
I mean to play that many snaps so well. But
then again, you know, you play Old Miss and you
know that they're going to thrive on the big play
and they want explosives, and they do a heck of
a job creating the explosives. They they put a lot
(14:37):
of pressure on you and they have you know, some
really talented, speedy wide receivers and I thought that, you know,
that was a big part of the game, you know
for us was not you know, we didn't have DJ
but still no excuse like our guys just not getting
them down after short passes.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
Which you did much better a job I thought last
year Dead in Oxford.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
Did we did, We definitely did. And they you know,
they have great speed, you know, and you know they
create a you know, throw a five yard hitch and
you're giving them some space and making our guys miss
and I want to say they got one hundred yards
on on hitch routes, which is crazy.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
H Alex Safari maybe playing as well as any linebacker
out there right now. I think he's second in the
in the country. I think today in solo tackles. They
had two straight double digit tackle games and really seems
to be seeing the play and then firing on his decision.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
Yeah, he he played really well. Once again, he's really
just seeing the ball, he's reading his keys, he's trusting it,
and he's making you know, critical tackles. So he's been
you know, very much of a defensive leader for us.
Ty Bryant had a big day obviously. The two picks
were really just great place by him. You know, we
(15:56):
got good pressure, we had good good coverage underneath, sailed
a little that high, and Ty was there to overlap
and create the turnovers.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
So that was big.
Speaker 5 (16:04):
But those guys up front are a lot of times
tying up blockers, so they don't always build up as
many stats.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
Who's playing well up in that area.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
Well, Khalil, I thought played the best game since he's
been you know, at Kentucky. He really was disruptive. There
was a couple of times with again some of their
plays they could you know, give it out the front
side or bring it with the quarterback coming back with
some blockers were short. You know, anytime the quarterback runs
the ball, you could be short a man. And he
really split some double teams and made some tackles and
(16:32):
gave great effort. Gusta, you know, did a heck of
a job putting pressure on the quarterback as well. I
think that led to one of the overthrows. And you know,
so those guys up front are just overall they're playing
very hard. Sam Green's playing hard, very physical, you know.
Speaker 5 (16:48):
So back to the offensive side, I thought Seth mcgallan
really ran the ball well. Plus he had an excellent
block on the edge on a jet sweep to Kendrick
look Law.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Yeah he did. Yeah, Seth is really playing at a
high level. He is making people miss. He's very explosive.
He's good. We got to continue to incorporate him that
that could help our past game as well, because he's
really good with the check downs or screens, you know,
ball in his hands. Good things are happening. But Seth
really ran very physical, made some people miss and had
(17:20):
some explosives for us.
Speaker 5 (17:21):
I think Coach Hampdon was telling Jeff Pacorrow and I
our meeting before the first game about how impressed he
had been with Seth and the way he had approached
practice day in and day out from the start of
training camp to the start of the season.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
Yeah, he's very serious about it. You know, him and Dante,
both of them are very strong individuals. You know, they're
both very talented, very physical. They've been around, they played
a lot of football, so they take it very serious.
Speaker 5 (17:47):
What are you seeing in the in the wide receiver
group passing games? Obviously struggling, So what do you see
it's struggling.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
I mean we need to play better. I mean there's
there's plays in that game where there is some separation,
there's some room and there is a pocket, and we
have to be better at that. That's on the quarterback,
you know, when there's windows, when there's space, we have
to step up and trust it and deliver the football.
We missed on some of those. And then there's other
(18:15):
times when the receivers need to be better as well,
creating space, being you know, more precise in their in
their concepts and in the routes, and you know, you
put it all together and you know, once in a
while there's going to be some pressure with the people
we play and it just can be better in all areas,
but certainly the receivers take part in that.
Speaker 5 (18:34):
With a young quarterback like cut Or whenever he's out
there on Saturday, I mean, you talk about a guy
that's thrown less than seventy five balls now in his career,
so he's still very much learning at this level. And
I thought on the last series it was the play
that set up the field goal. He stayed in the pocket,
trusted the protection, and then when the guy hardly came
(18:55):
across the middle, it was even though they were in
prevent defaise its mode, it was a tight coverage situation
and he acted as soon as he saw it.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
He threw the ball. He was decisive, cut it loose.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
They were back behind him, but they were tight underneath.
On the window was tight and he made a really
nice throw on that. I thought that it was either
the same series or the series before he had one
as well, where the pocket was there. Like last night,
I noticed that watching some of those guys again late
in the fourth quarter, how impressive they are. But you
(19:27):
know there's times in that NFL where you don't have
much time. Right the pocket is collapsing, but that there's
other times where they trust it, stay up in there
and deliver the football. And I thought, you know, our
quarterbacks to date, both of them missed, missed some en routes,
some digs, some some plays that are there, you know,
So that's where we just have to improve.
Speaker 5 (19:46):
There was another play that Cutter made it. It may
have been on that last series before the past. We
were just talking about where this protection did break down.
He scrambles, Yeah, made a good decision, got a lot
of yards.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
But Jeff and I talked about this on the year.
Speaker 5 (20:00):
He may want to think twice about what he the
way he finished that off. I mean, it's great Will
Levis did some of that and you I mean, it's
all for the swagger, but uh yeah, discretion is the
better part of valor, as the saying.
Speaker 3 (20:10):
Well, in knowing that we had one quarterback down and uh,
you know he was going out there and you know
it was going to be very difficult with no timeouts
to come back. I told him to operate, run the system,
but do not take any you know, undo, you know, hits.
And he goes out there and runs twenty yards and
takes on.
Speaker 2 (20:28):
A big dude.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
He took a big leg too, but he's all right
and hopefully that'll shake the cobwebs off of him. But
next up is Bo Allen's father. Bill's in this in
the audience here today. But Bo, it's good to have, yeah,
I uh, you know, it's exactly why I'm I'm really
happy to have bow back, you know, for this, for
this situation, you know, with with Zach. If he can't
(20:50):
go this week, you know Cutter, Cutter will go. And
it's great to have a veteran, a guy I trust,
you know, to have it.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
As a backup, and not just a veteran, a guy
who knows your system.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
No, he knows the system. I trust him. You know,
he's he's engaged, he's like you know, said it throughout
the summer. You know, I just feel a comfort level
having him with us. He's like a coach, you know,
to me and out there and so very very grateful
to have him on the team.
Speaker 5 (21:14):
What do you like best about we were talking about
Cutter about his approach to the playing the quarterback position.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
Well, you know, he's very poised, you know that position.
You know, it's it's really hard. I mean I could
tell with Zach in the first game. You know, he
he wanted to perform for his team, but he was
a little amped up. I mean, you really have to
stay within yourself and just operate and take what's there.
You can't predetermine things. And you know Cutter has done that.
(21:40):
He's gotten better. You know through camp he's he has
shown us that in games with limited reps. But you know,
I feel good about it. I'm excited to watch him play.
Speaker 5 (21:50):
Fans, what do you like best about Cutter Bowlie's game.

Nebraska, so we're I mean I had to actually go
to the training room too, that's how rough. But I
was in the training room and our players were all
in there getting treatment on Sunday afternoon and all that,
and uh, I'm down there and it was on and
we all kind of got into it. And it was
one heck of a match and they came so close
and that that that match.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
They're playing so well.
Speaker 5 (25:21):
But again, that's an example you were talking about earlier
about bouncing back from adversity. Yeah, when you admit, you know,
it was there for the taking. They didn't quite seize it,
but they did up depends.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
Yeah, that's that's a great point in a in a
big match, you know, against you know, a great opponent,
and they went up to nothing and ended up losing.
And they bounce back and have a huge win the
next opportunity, so good for them.
Speaker 5 (25:44):
We'll get to our first question on the social media stream.
It's at UK Sports Network where Dylan sends in the question, uh,
wanting you know what you're working on to improve communication
on the field and the time management at the end
of the half for what happened to you on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
Yeah, the operation. You know, we talked about it after
week one. It was so clean for an opener. Obviously
the intensity picks up, you know, communication, you know, a
lot more specialty packages, different things with different personnel, and
you know, it was frustrating. I mean, like I said,
there's no excuse for it. You know, I think you
(26:23):
know the time management at the end of the halftime
was I mean, so we get the ball I think
everybody would agree. You get the ball in the thirty
you know, with no timeouts, we're going to run it,
you know, to see if you just see if we
break one and make sure keep them honest and not
give them an offense that could score and seconds. You know,
(26:43):
we we were getting the ball to start the second half,
so I think everybody can understand that. Well, we rip off,
you know, the first run goes for five. The second
run goes for almost twenty. Then we go into our
two minutes. We operate the next play perfectly, so we're
play one, two and three.
Speaker 5 (27:03):
Yeah, at that point, had that place tood, you'd be
at the forty with a little time left.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
So at that point it was it was to perfection
and then that that's where the next play is. It's inexcusable,
so we have I think, you know, there was, you know,
some discussion on the sideline. I wanted to just run
any play with thirteen seconds. We could have ran it,
we could have thrown it and then spiked it. We
(27:27):
decided to go with a boundary play. Operated the boundary
play got five yards and got a bounce, just what
Bush was calling for. But the receiver was lined up
probably six inches too close to the ball, so I
don't know, you know, it felt really frustrating to me too, because.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
We lost it.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
After that, it's it's chaos, you know what I mean.
I got the hold and all that, but to that point,
those four plays were run. If you told us we
were going to go you know, fifty yards or you know,
forty yards and get in field goal position in less
than a minute, I would take it.
Speaker 5 (28:00):
And you need to be good at that because you've
got a guy with a big legs. So it's not
like you have to get three fourths of the way
down the field.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
No, it was frustrating. It was inexcusable, you know, like
you know, that's where, like I said, I you know,
my my you know, instruction was to run any play
one or to and then spike it. You know, I
didn't want to you know, run a run the sideline
play or you know anything. I mean, and I'm not,
but Bush has autonomy to call what he wants. He
knows what he's doing, you know. It's just, uh so
(28:28):
I'm not pitting one against the other here. You know,
it's none of that. I mean, everybody wants to make
a big deal of that. Heck, you know, he and
I we were you know, we're big boys. We can
handle it. You know, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
But you know, if if what I'm saying is if
we don't, and again I'm not making an excuse, there's
no you know, getting around it. It's not it's bad ball.
(28:49):
When the receiver lined up six inches further off, then
we gained the five yards we're looking for we kicked
the field goal.
Speaker 5 (28:57):
Let's get to call on Clark's pumping shop phone one
before we hit our next brick.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
Chad, what do you have for coach twos?
Speaker 26 (29:04):
Yeah, coach, I'm just kind of fining. Can you hear me?
Speaker 3 (29:08):
Yes, Chad? How are you doing?
Speaker 19 (29:11):
Good?
Speaker 27 (29:12):
Good?
Speaker 26 (29:12):
Hey, coach, I'm just following up to what you were
talking about Saturday. And my question is, what about just
simplify the playbook? You know, like four or five six
plays do very effectively, right, He's like some of the
best offenses that play fast. It's just it's simple, And
I thought, wouldn't that play in the cutter's hands too?
Speaker 3 (29:29):
Yeah, I mean you make a very valid point there.
Some of those offenses that with the tempo scheme they are,
they do run a lot of the same plays, they
just dress them up in different ways and the tempo
is effective for them. But but to your point, I
did grab the offense staff and have have a meeting
(29:51):
in my office there at the stadium at halftime because
it was an excuse me, you know, and there was
you know, just it just wasn't it wasn't clean and
enough for me as well. And part of that was
the sub too much suburn to to Chad's point of simplifying,
but the suburn doesn't need to be as complex either,
and with the plays as well. I mean, that's you know,
(30:13):
very fair. There's you know, enough we have to do enough,
We have to have enough ammunition. You have to dress
things up. And that's what I challenge the players with.
We have to present things differently week to week. You know,
the week before, you know, against Old Miss, we had
to get in some stacks, we had to get in
some bunches. We had to get in there because they
pressed coverage, because they press, and and we had to create.
(30:36):
And so you know, there's there's some unique things we
have to do week to week. But you know, Chad's
not far off. I mean, that's that's point well taken.
We've already discussed that and we we you know, I
say it often. I mean, you can't beat anybody until
you stop beating yourself. And uh, you know, I think
every every coach will tell you that.
Speaker 5 (30:53):

four two sixty three or inside Lexington it is two
eight cats to eight h two two eight seven. Jared,
your next up with coach Oops? What do you have
for us?
Speaker 29 (35:08):
Hey, coach, you just want to say, first and foremost,
of course and foremost, appreciate all the hard work you
and the team put in this summer. I mean you
could tell you all put your head down work. You
can see the improvement to me on both sides of
the ball, offense, defense, the offensive defensive lines, the running game.
(35:30):
My question, and I think you kind of answered it
a little bit earlier from a wide receiver standpoint. Is
it more of the film getting some distance between the
defender schematic when you looked at the film, or is
it not running the route to what you all had
drawn up?
Speaker 3 (35:48):
Yeah? Thanks, Jared, You know, I think you know again,
I think that's a fair question, and uh, it's something
that's a little bit of everything. I think there are windows,
there are there is some separation that the quarterbacks aren't
seeing and hitting. Now, you know when I'm watching the film.
(36:10):
You know, a lot of times I will give the
quarterback the benefit of the doubt as well, because there's
some big dudes coming at them, and sometimes the windows
are not there. You could watch it on film and
you could very easily see, you know, the receiver having
some separation and want the ball delivered. But sometimes there's
some big old dudes in your face and they don't
(36:30):
get to see it. And then there's other times when
there are windows there, and that's what is frustrating me,
because you know, the the you know, we play very
good defensive backs. They could cover our guys. Sometimes that's
why we create the stacks, punches, create some separation conceptually,
and then and that's where we have to change things
(36:51):
up to the earlier callers point, you know. So you know,
you put all that together, and we're just falling short.
The quarterback making the decisions step it up in the pocket,
throwing it when it's there, and then other times the
receivers maybe not getting this separation that we need. And
you know, it's definitely, you know, an issue that we're
addressing and need to get better. I said going into
(37:13):
the game that the receivers had to step up and
make tough competitive catches, you know, and we had some
opportunities and you know other times, you know, we just
fell short or didn't deliver them the football. You know,
like one play in particular stands out, you know to
what Jared's talking about is, you know, we get the interception,
(37:34):
we run it on first down. I think we get
a penalty. We're down on the maybe fifteen, and we
call a quick game and it's there. I mean it's
on first down. We have an opportunity gain six yards
like this in the windows there, the site lines are there.
He looks at it and he doesn't throw it, and
he takes a sack. Now that that's frustrating.
Speaker 5 (37:55):
Yeah, those are the That's kind of what I was
talking about with the thrill Cutter made to Gilbour. He
it wasn't like he was just sitting there wide open.
It was we said, as we said, a tight window.
But he saw an opportunity and he was decisive and
he act on it.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
He kind of loose.
Speaker 5 (38:07):
Yeah, that's what you have to do too, because when
they're not gonna give you too many wide open throws
at this level.
Speaker 3 (38:12):
No, and Zach has done that all through camp and
he's done. He has the arm, he stepped up in
it in the pocket and has delivered the football. At times,
we're just not as consistent as we need to be.
And you know Cutter is going to have an opportunity
and and uh, you know, I trust that he'll do
it as well, you know, Zach. Sometimes you know, just
technically we're watching it and you know he's stepping back
in the pocket instead of up in the pocket. And
(38:33):
those are all things that are correctable, but we we
got to get corrected in a hurry.
Speaker 5 (38:38):
This is the Mark Stoop Show, presented by UK Healthcare.
If you have a question, send it in on X
or give us a call on the Clark's Pump and
Shot phone line.
Speaker 2 (38:47):
Back to the running game. We've talked a lot about
the passive game and issues there.
Speaker 5 (38:52):
But you have run the ball for two twenty the
first week. I think it was one seventy nine this week.
So those numbers sound good. Is it as good as
those numbers sound or is there still room for improvement there?
Speaker 3 (39:04):
Well, there's definitely room for improvement, but I am pleased.
As the previous caller mentioned, I think, you know, physically
the offensive line is better we're getting some movement, they're
protecting fairly well, and our running backs are running very,
very tough yards and they're very good backs, and so
you know, that's been very effective. It helps keep people
off balance. We just got to put it all together
(39:26):
and you know, will be much more difficult to defend
if we can threaten them in the past game as well.
Speaker 2 (39:33):

You mentioned you were watching the Sunday night game. Three
of your guys were on the winning side with the
Buffalo Bill's Maxwell. Harriston's on the injured list right now,
but Dan Walker Ray Davis are both there and uh
saw wars of Darius Smith just got picked up by
the Eagles, So great opportunity for him. Who's one of
your first building blocks of your program here.
Speaker 3 (42:52):
Yeah, without a doubt. You know, it's good to see
those guys. And you and I were talking off the air.
Darien is uh oh, Darick Canard. Yeah, Cannard he had
to go in the other day. He's a backup right tackle,
but he had to jump in the other day and
it looked like he played very well from what I
saw very briefly. But uh, yeah, I'm very proud of
those guys are doing well. And I think you know,
you mentioned the Hall of Fame this weekend, but Josh
(43:13):
Allen's getting inducted on the defense on the football side,
So good for Josh.
Speaker 5 (43:18):
Yeah, what what It's one of the all time great stories,
you know what he came in. I think it was
a situation where you The story is, uh, you had
a decommitment late and so you had an opening and
you'd been looking at Josh, so you went back and said, Okay,
we've got we have one now for you if you
wanted to, I think, yeah. Other than that, he had
(43:39):
Monmouth was his only.
Speaker 2 (43:40):
Other off Momuth. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (43:41):
But I had a person I knew from New Jersey
that was coaching high school ball, you know, a guy
I had worked with at Wyoming and Houston, and you know,
I've known him forever, but I knew the family and
uh and you know, so one of them, one of
the brothers, was coach in the New Jersey and he
sent me the film and he's like, you know, Coach,
(44:03):
I don't work with this young man, but I played
against him and seems to be pretty good. And we
watched the film and I definitely liked him. Set up
one of sent up one of my coaches to check
him out, and you know, everything checked off. He was
a great young man, good person, had the academics, you know,
and good football player. He you know, grew up originally
(44:26):
in the South Alabama, Alabama, playing wide receivers. He knew
he was an athlete and then started playing outside backer.
Well anyway, yeah, we get we get to scholarship late
open up and we beat Mammoth on him, you know,
and he one of the greatest players in the history
of our school.
Speaker 5 (44:41):
And Josh, it was a great tribute to just putting
in the work because from year to year you saw
him transform, and then by that that last year he
was just crazy strong and fast.
Speaker 2 (44:55):
And the play that.
Speaker 5 (44:56):
I always remember is down to Texas A and M
where or the two plays down there. There was one
where he was going after the quarterback and he was
being held on each arm by two offensive linemen.
Speaker 2 (45:09):
No flag by the way, and and.
Speaker 5 (45:10):
The next play he's about thirty yards down the field
defending the tight end.
Speaker 3 (45:15):
Yeah, yep, I remember that play as well. Yeah, definitely
he was special. And if I'm not mistaken, he is
about to set the franchise record in sacks for the
Jacksonville Jaguars.
Speaker 2 (45:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (45:29):
How far off is he?
Speaker 2 (45:30):
Tony?
Speaker 3 (45:31):
I mean, come on, you know everything.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
Just UK and coach Cohen got his.
Speaker 3 (45:37):
Y w Absolutely we were. I was communicating with him
last week prior to the game, and you know, very
happy for him. They look like they have a good.
Speaker 2 (45:44):
Team, so good luck certainly to those guys.
Speaker 5 (45:48):
By the way, Josh the great story with his son
who was battling a former cancer and I got to
ring the bell for the being cancer free, So yeah,
without a doubt.
Speaker 3 (45:59):
It's been a hectic off season for Josh, to say
the least. He found out soon after the season and
and you know, thank god, you know, great, great news
right prior to the season.
Speaker 5 (46:12):
Well, let's get back to talking about the game this week,
and you mench up with Eastern Michigan outside the league again.
So from the standpoint of last week, on one hand,
you don't you know, there's nothing great about being close
if you don't get the win, but you do kind
of confirm it's confirmed to your guys that the hard
work you put in it was a good, very good
(46:34):
team you faced.
Speaker 2 (46:37):
It's it's close.
Speaker 3 (46:38):
Well, I think you know what you're probably alluding to,
and probably how I feel. I didn't exactly know what
we had after week one, you know, and I think
I have a better idea who we are after week two.
And so if our team continues to play with that
kind of passion, energy, play tough, you know, do the
(46:59):
things that we've always you know done around here, and uh,
you know, get back to those ways, then then good
things are in store for us. They they have a
great attitude. I love this team. I said it over
and over. But you know, we we we all have
things to improve on. But I love their attitude and
I love the way they work, and good things are
in store for us. It's a long season and we
(47:19):
have a lot of new faces and we're putting things together.
Speaker 5 (47:22):
Let's go to the Clark's pumping shot phone line, Dennis,
what do you have for us?
Speaker 27 (47:28):
Hey, coach, I'm an supporter of years, but thanks you
guys made a decision or you made a decision Saturday
night when I was there at the game that you know,
it's fourth and it's fourth and nine, we're down twenty
seven to twenty. Me of course, I'm kind of conservatives. Man,
(47:52):
I'm kind of in your mode, which I you know,
I like that and I'm a conservative guy. But anyway,
me me, I kicked the field goal out there, I
take three point eight minutes to go in the game.
That uh, you know, that's just yeah, you got you
gotta score twice to win the game.
Speaker 3 (48:12):
Anyway, Yeah, I can't, you know, Dennis, I'll say this
analytics wise, and I know you and I probably would,
you know, at times want to throw that book out
the window. But but analytics wise, it says I made
the right decision, you know, what, ironically was the only
decision in that game that they said I was wrong
(48:34):
on was when I punted it on fourth and three
and we got the ball back a minute and a
half lighter on the thirty yard line and scored our
first time side of the fifties. Yeah, but but analytics
said to go for it, you know what I mean?
Speaker 2 (48:48):
And uh, and you said today you were really going
to go for it.
Speaker 3 (48:51):
Well, I was going to go for it.
Speaker 2 (48:52):
You were just trying to draw them all sides.
Speaker 3 (48:54):
No, and we didn't have we it was fourth down,
and uh, you know, our our running back coach is
also the special teams courterner, so he was gathering the
punt team together and so when we called the play
that we did, we wanted a certain back in there.
And so that's what, you know, kind of made me
call a timeout on that one. And then the more
I thought about it, I said, hey, we're playing pretty
(49:15):
good defense right now, where you know, play him straight
up and punt the ball. Kind of to Dennis's point,
you know, play it, play it straight up. And uh
so I punted it, but you know it worked out
because we got the ball back. I think, I mean,
quick meant and a half to you know, under two
minutes we got the ball at the thirty yard line scored.
But on that one, Dennis, I mean, you know, you
(49:37):
obviously have every right to disagree with me, especially when
it doesn't work, but you know, I felt like we
needed the touchdown. We did get the ball back again quickly,
drove it right back in the same position and had
the second opportunity.
Speaker 5 (49:53):
When you are balant there, you could, I guess, go
strictly by analytics, but you can also put them into
the context of time and score and also who you're playing.
Speaker 2 (50:03):
I guess agree.
Speaker 5 (50:05):
There's times where you think, you know, Old miss is
a very potent offensive team. Some another game, it might
be somebody that's more methodical, and you will.
Speaker 3 (50:14):
The analytics you're thinking, you know, the people we consault
with for the analytics takes all that into consideration too,
who you're playing, So I actually have a different analytic
book each week for who we are playing. So if
it already puts that into perspective, so it takes the
decision making out of your hands. But you know, as
my friend Drink said earlier this week, they they pay
(50:37):
him and they pay me to make those decisions not
not a book, you know, so I agree with you
Tom and Dennis. You know, sometimes you have to go
with your gut instinct and sometimes it's right and sometimes
it's wrong.
Speaker 5 (50:48):
Dennis, thank you for the question. We are coming up
to our final segment. One more break and then we'll
come back and close it out with Coach Stoops. Our
show's presented by UK Healthcare and this is the UK SportsWorks.

My skyline order has always been the same three cheese conies,
no onion, no mustard. But the other day a friend
got me to try one with everything on it. It
was amazing. That little dash of mustard and the snap
of those diced onions just blew me away. I didn't
know what I was missing. From now on, when I
go to Skyline. It's three cheese conies all the way
(53:51):
with the side of chili cheese fries.
Speaker 20 (53:52):
How do you like your Skyline conys?
Speaker 14 (53:55):
Feeling good?
Speaker 23 (53:56):
It's Skyline time?
Speaker 2 (54:09):
All right?
Speaker 5 (54:10):
Our final segment here on the Mark Stoop Show presented
by UK Healthcare.
Speaker 2 (54:13):
And uh, we had to get to that break.
Speaker 5 (54:15):
But just to finish up on what Dennis was talking about,
you have caught heat in the in the past for
not being as aggressive, uh to go forward in certain situations.
Uh are you do you find yourself leaning more on
the analytics now than you did in the past?
Speaker 2 (54:30):
Or is that idea?
Speaker 3 (54:32):
I'd say, at least I want to make you know,
I want that information, you know, I at least want
the information and then you know, again go with the
decision and you know, but but have that info at
my fingertips.
Speaker 2 (54:45):
I do.
Speaker 3 (54:45):
I You know, during all of those situations, I have
somebody on the sidelines actually following me, and and uh,
I'm talking directly to him in between plays or whatever,
and he'll just simply say, you know, nine or less,
ten or less, you know, four or less, three or less.
Speaker 2 (55:00):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 3 (55:01):
They kind of like it goes first decision yeah, and
so you know, and that's what I use. But again,
in that situation, he told me that in the fourth down,
I believe the book said three or less than we
were at two two and a half. It was almost three,
and I decided to punt it. And I'm glad I did,
you know, But uh, and Dennis says, every right, But yeah,
(55:22):
you're right, I catch a lot more heat for not
being aggressive. But I don't, you know, I don't blame
anybody forgiving me heat about any of that. There their
their fans and you know, and they have every right
and you know, and I love the passion and energy.
I understand it, and uh, you know, I don't.
Speaker 5 (55:37):
And clearly it's not like it was a lockdown decision
for you. You're thinking both ways.
Speaker 3 (55:41):
I'm thinking both ways. I'm trying to be aggressive. I
want to win the game. You know, I'm playing to
win the game. Three points doesn't really help us much there,
you know. Uh, you know, I have fun with the
media because you know, really, I feel like when we're
in those conversations, I'm open with them, I'm talking and
you know, they're like in hindsight, Yeah, in hindsight, I mean,
you know, if I'm and blackjack or playing the lottery
(56:01):
in hindsight would be really good. But I guess I
gotta quit talking and hypothetical it's no more, no more
in hindsight. But I'm just being honest. I mean, if
it doesn't work in hindsight, would you change it? Yeah,
well yeah, you'd be dumb not too. It's like like
on the golf course, would mulligan, Yeah, would you hit
the five or the six? Well, it works so well
with the six, I would have hit the five. That's correct.
Speaker 2 (56:22):
For complete coverage of the Cats.
Speaker 5 (56:23):

Bottom line is you have a young kicker who is
perfect so far.
Speaker 3 (56:41):
Yeah, Jacob has been really solid. I'm very happy, you know,
and he has a strong leg and and uh, you know,
well it's going to be a long season, so we're
gonna have many opportunities just a freshman.
Speaker 5 (56:54):
By the way, you asked the question about Josh heinz
Allen in the Zach Record all time sack record for
the Jacksonville Jaguars franchise. Turns out he's two behind, we
found out, so he is. I knew he's getting close,

about out of time, so no more questions here, but
