at Kroger Field under the lights. Five o'clock Eastern is
when we will get our coverage started on one of
those Skeeland the UK football double headers that are so
popular with the Wildcat fans. Join now by coach Mark

(05:40):
Stoops as we talk about the matchup with the Longhorns.
But first we'll start with your club, Mark and today's practice.
Back to a normal game weekend, we get a little
head to start on them with the open date. But
what was it like out there today?

Speaker 5 (05:53):
Yeah, it's good.

Speaker 10 (05:53):
It seems like it was just what three mondays ago,
you know, coming off the by again. Yes, second time.
It's kind of odd. That's the first time that's ever
happened to me. But you know, we got to make
the most of it, and so we had a good
off week.

Speaker 5 (06:08):
Guys got healthy, we got some good work in, you know,
I think.

Speaker 10 (06:12):
But our players like the most about that off week
is just you know, you don't really have.

Speaker 5 (06:17):
To hold anything back.

Speaker 10 (06:17):
You could go full tilt, you know what I mean,
because they know they're going to get some rest on Friday,
Saturday Sunday. So I thought we had a really good
week last week and today we did a little more
than normal. So beautiful day, good practice, good meetings, So
off to a good start.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
You're catching a nice stretch of weather here now it
should be a nice night. It looks like from the
forecast for a big crowd. I know. I'm imagining that
Texas will bring a lot of folks up because there
were a lot of Kentucky fans that wanted to make
their first trick to Austin last year and now the
Texas fans will have the chance to do that to Lexington.
Plus they get to go to Keeman.

Speaker 5 (06:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (06:54):
Absolutely, it sounds like a big group folks are coming in,
you know, from Texas to Lexington. Matter of fact, I
know that actually talked with Chrys del Conte. They're a
d today. And I go back a long way to
when my brother Mike was the head coach at Arizona.
Chris was the number two guy there in Arizona. So
we've known Chris for a long time. He does a

(07:15):
great job. And uh, they're bringing a big group and
they have a very good football team.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
What when you put the tape in, what are some
of the things that stand out about the Longhorns.

Speaker 5 (07:25):
Well, you know, they're very big, very physical.

Speaker 10 (07:28):
I mean, you know, it goes without saying that they're
going to have talented athletes right just about everybody we
play and and certainly you know Texas and in that
talent rich state, they're going to have very good players.

Speaker 5 (07:41):
But they're very physical.

Speaker 10 (07:42):
I think that's one thing coach Sark has done since
he's been the head coach there. You could tell, you know,
they're they're very physical on both sides of the line
of scrimmage, with very big guys, and you know they're
they're playing very good football and they're only getting better.
I think you know, a lots talked about and written
about Arch, but you know what you see as a
very talented young man that's getting better with every opportunity.

Speaker 4 (08:05):
You talked a lot leading up to this season about
wanting to get back to being more physical. Almost a
halfway point of the season, what have you seen in
that area with your guys.

Speaker 10 (08:15):
Yeah, definitely an improvement, you know, there's no question. I
think you know you could see that in Spurts. I mean, yes,
we'd like to be more consistent, but you know, I
think you know, the physicality on the lines of scrimmage
are there, but when you talk about a physical football
team and not just talking about the lines of scrimmage, right,
it starts there, but it's also guys on the perimeter
of the blocking, on the perimeter of the receivers, defensive

(08:37):
backs and so on.

Speaker 5 (08:38):
You know, hopefully we'll get DJ Waller back.

Speaker 10 (08:40):
That's a big you know, one of our big guys
that has some great length at a corner and you know,
hopefully he'll be back at full strength. He was out
there today and he looks good.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
You know.

Speaker 4 (08:51):
Back at the start of training camp, he went down
with a little issue early on and I think you
were standing there next to where I was, and he said,
for I frustrated because he said, he's playing as well
as anybody on our defense right now coming into the
start of the STA.

Speaker 10 (09:04):
Yeah, I thought that when you and I were at
practice and you know, through camp and the beginning of
the season. Yeah, DJ was definitely one of our best players.
And uh, you know he's he's got that physicality that
you're looking for, the lengthiest speed, you know, cover up
some of those wide outs. So you know, hopefully he'll
be uh, you know, have a great week. He's off

(09:25):
to a good start. He's been itching, he's been wanting
to get back out there, but he has the type
of injury that he already tried to come back from
it too quick and he injured it again. So you know,
the want two is definitely there. So you know we
just had to you know, really protect them against himself
because you know, you felt like if you, you know,
aggravate that same injury a third time, you know, probably

(09:46):
be done for the year, and we don't want that.

Speaker 4 (09:48):
And gives you another quality player there's you increase your depth,
you can rotate, you get three guys that are essentially
next starters.

Speaker 10 (09:55):
Then yeah, yeah, exactly because Ryan's playing very good football.
He was dinged up a little bit and give JQ.
You know, he'll play at a higher level if you
could just get them some rest. So yeah, it'll definitely help.

Speaker 4 (10:06):

We're back here on the show and want to remind
you that our game on Saturday, sponsored by Kentucky Farm Bureau,
built on commitment Kentucky and Texas under the lights at
Kroger Field, visiting here with Mark Stoops, and then we'll
get to you some of your questions a little bit later.
I saw at your news conference today one of the

(13:47):
things you talked about is how long you've known coach
Sarkisian from when you're all's pass crossed. I think when
you were at Arizona with your brother and you talked
about him as a play caller. He's more of an
offensive background years on the defensive side, So what's his
his style. What do you anything particular you prepare for
that is kind of something he likes to go to.

Speaker 10 (14:07):
Well, it's it's evolved over over the years, for sure,
but we do go way back back when my brother
Mike was the head coach at Arizona. He was at
USC and we always had some really good games with them.
Matter of fact, I think he was already gone. He
was at Washington my last couple of years, so we
competed against them there as well. But uh, but always, uh,

(14:28):
you know, have a ton of respect for him. You know,
he evolves like all good coaches do. Right now, you know,
this last game they went to you know, it starts,
you know, always with with their run game, their physical
you know, and then their play action passes and you know,
arts can certainly throw the ball all areas of the field,

(14:49):
that's for sure. But this past game they'd got away
from their gapschemes a little more than they had been
and went to more of the split zone in the
zones and outside zone and trying to cut people off
and increasing some people. When you saw in the second
half of the Oklahoma game they really started getting some
explosive plays in the run game and and then of course,

(15:11):
you know Arch is going to make his plays. I
thought he really showed a ton of poise in that game,
because it was it was a hard fought game on
both sides for much of the game. And then you know,
in the pocket, he delivered a beautiful touchdown pass.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
I believe it was Texas.

Speaker 10 (15:28):
You know, it was Texas first touchdown the game, you know,
right from in the pocket, didn't have to get off
his spot and delivered a great pass and back of
the end zone for a touchdown. But then there were
some throws when he was off schedule and moving, you know,
evading some pressure and making some throws. One in particular
stood out to me. It was a four point game,
I want to say, ten to six, and off his

(15:49):
own goal line got him, you know, got pressure.

Speaker 5 (15:52):
Right in his face. He evaded some.

Speaker 10 (15:54):
Pressure on third and seven or eight and delivered a
beautiful corner route that was very impressive. Then later in
the drive on a third and extra long, really stepped
into a throw and made a great, great h pass.
They got him fourteen or fifteen yards to set up
a field goal, and then they kind of took over
from there. So you know, a little bit of everything,
a little bit of run game, a little bit of

(16:15):
play action, and obviously some drop back.

Speaker 4 (16:18):
Arch is a little maybe closer on the the spectrum
to his grandfather Archie rather than his uncle's Peyton and Eli,
who are more kind of classic drop back guys where
Archie beat you with his legs too, and arch is
good when things get off schedule too.

Speaker 10 (16:37):
I would you know, I would leave that to you.
You are definitely the history, you know what I mean?

Speaker 5 (16:41):
So I am not I don't know if anybody's like Archie.

Speaker 10 (16:44):
Anybody's yea. I was gonna say, I'm not going to
compete with you.

Speaker 4 (16:47):
You know you could.

Speaker 10 (16:48):
You'll start pulling out some dates and some plays you
know from from way back that will be quite impressive.
So I trust you on that.

Speaker 4 (16:56):
Well he can. Archie is a is a threat, Oh yeah,
definitely a threat.

Speaker 5 (17:00):
Scrambling and running definitely.

Speaker 10 (17:01):
Did they do much design run? Yeah they do. There
was another critical third down, you know, second half of
the game. You know there was one design quarterback run
another one. I want to say that he just scrambled
a bit and got one, but definitely will hurt you

(17:22):
with his legs. There was a critical third down in
particular that I'm thinking of that was a design quarterback run.

Speaker 4 (17:26):
Yes, talk about your QB and Cutter Bowley. I'm sure
he's kind of with a guy who is light on experience,
the pattern of improvement's probably gonna be a little more
rapid with a veteran guy. So what are you seeing
in terms of Cutter on the practice field?

Speaker 10 (17:41):
Well, I hope we continue to see the improvement that
we saw from his first start this year to a
second because he certainly improved a great deal and played,
you know, did some really good things in the Georgia game.

Speaker 5 (17:53):
So hopefully he'll continue.

Speaker 10 (17:54):
To progress that way on the practice field. He has
been doing that, had a really good week last week.
As I said, We've did a lot of competitive ball.
We're just out there playing football, good against good, not
so much working on Texas the entire time, you know, break.

Speaker 5 (18:09):
It up, and.

Speaker 10 (18:11):
You know, he was doing very good and they had
a good start to the day today, good start to
the week, So we'll continue to push him along.

Speaker 4 (18:19):
After the Georgia game, he talked about how comfortable he
felt with the plan that coach Hampden put together for
that game, and we saw him do some different types
of throws, you've got the ball out, quicker, move the
pocket a little bit. I'm guessing you guys are kind
of there's a little bit of learning as you go
with a new quarterback and a young quarterback. Yeah.

Speaker 10 (18:40):
Absolutely, it's always you know, what he's comfortable with, what
you know, what we can do, how we can function
at a higher level offensively, and you know, just the
protection is just all that. You know, We're just constantly
trying to get better and put our kids in a
position to be successful.

Speaker 4 (18:56):
What are the ways that Texas will challenge Cutter.

Speaker 10 (19:01):
Well, you know, they're they're very big upfront, you know,
and they do a great job of tackling on the perimeter.
I thought that's something that stood out to me in
the last game as well. You know, and you know
we talk about a lot on this show and throughout
the year. You know, when you're playing great athletes in
this league, you get the ball in space, you get
the ball on a perimeter, the stress that it puts

(19:22):
on us defensively, we tend to tackle very well when
we have a bunch of guys in great position on
the football, when you're in one on one in some
you know, wide area of the space. You know, it
gets very difficult and very challenging. I thought they did
a great job of tackling in space against Oklahoma in particular,
and they have all year, so they're really talented at
all three levels of the defense. Very physical upfront, but

(19:46):
you know, good, good athletes on the back end.

Speaker 4 (19:48):

Come back into the Marshtove Show and you can reach
us on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line. You can
send in questions on social media at UK Sports Network.
Let's start with our Alumni Hall question of the week
and it's about Cam Miller, the freshman wide receiver from
Jersey who flashed in the fourth quarter of the Georgia game,
got three balls thrown his way, caught them all, won

(22:46):
a big fourth and ten conversion where he had to
make a very difficult catch and did So what have
you seen what impressed you when you watched that tape?
And then how has he built on it in practice?

Speaker 10 (22:57):
Yeah, definitely He's a guy that worked really hard to
get open. You know, for for young guys when they're
covered up again against some good athletes, you know, they
don't always use their speed. You know, it starts at
the wide receiver position when you're you know, especially when
you're getting press man demanded to to try to beat
people with speed, you know, create some separation, and a
lot of times you're not going to get a whole

(23:18):
heck of a lot of separation. And so the quarterback's
going to throw it in spots like he did when
the when the when the defender is not facing the quarterback,
he could throw it and put it right on.

Speaker 5 (23:27):
Them in some spots.

Speaker 10 (23:28):
And Cam really adjusts to the ball very well, made
a competitive catch.

Speaker 5 (23:32):
It was interesting.

Speaker 10 (23:32):
I told Cam this the other day, you know, after
the game, Like when you know, when I was watching
that play live, I really had a ton of confidence.
It just speaks to what we're talking about with Cam.
When the ball was going his way on that fourth
and ten and I knew it was going to him,
I've had a lot.

Speaker 5 (23:46):
Of confidence he was going to catch the football, you know.

Speaker 10 (23:48):
And and and that's what we need, you know, you
need these playmakers to emerge. I think at the wide
receiver position. You know, we're trying a lot of guys.
We have some older guys that are very good young man,
good football players, you know, and you know, and then
we have some youngsters that we really believe in and
we're just trying to bring them along. So as you know,

(24:09):
it's not like we're sitting there in each game throwing
it around forty times a game. You know, that's not
a good recipe for us right now, even though we
did throw it what forty two, I want to say
in the Georgia game and had some decent success, you know,
at least in some improvement in that area. So Cam
is one of those guys. I think DJ Miller is
another one youngster that we have to bring along. Got

(24:30):
to give him some opportunities. He can make some tough
catches as well.

Speaker 4 (24:34):
If you have some thoughts on what you were impressed
by from Cam Miller in the Georgia game, send them
to at Alumni Hall UK on X and your response
could give you a chance to win a gift card
courtesy of our friends at Alumni Hall. I know, listening
to Cutter talk about Cam after the Georgia game. He
noted that Cam was a later rivoy when one of

(24:54):
those guys that got to come in and go through
spring ball with you. So he's been playing catchup. I
know sometimes fans we'll see a performance like that and
they well, where's he been all year? Well, part of
it is learning the playbook and gaining the trust of
his coaches.

Speaker 10 (25:07):
Yeah, he arrived very late in this day and age.
You know, he wasn't even on campus until late June.
But again he has impressed us. He's impressed us during
some scrimmages as well. We're trying to force feed these
youngsters as much as we can. There's always that balance,
you know, as you get into the season. You know,

(25:27):
even during our off week, we have to you know,
do a lot of self scout and there you know,
areas where we're you know, functioning well, areas where we're
falling short. How can we exploit that if we're doing
some good things, and and then we have to look
at you know, what we're doing. Are we doing too
much and we're not doing enough? You know, when you
get young guys and you're trying to bring them along,

(25:48):
it goes so fast that it's hard for them to stay.

Speaker 5 (25:51):
Up all the time.

Speaker 4 (25:52):
You mentioned DJ Miller not they're not related. And DJ
is very highly touted wide out that came in in
this class, and he got a little bit behind in
training camp with an injury, right.

Speaker 10 (26:01):
Hey did He got injured and you know again, you know,
tried to come back, fought through it a little bit
and got injured again, and and it just sets him back.
And then when you know again, it gets back to that.
You know, he's very talented, but coming back off injury,
it was a leg injury, not always you know, using
that speed that he has until he gets one hundred
percent healthy, which you know, the past couple of weeks

(26:22):
we're trying to work him back in there as well.

Speaker 4 (26:24):
Yeah, So the guy like that may have his chance
like Cam did. Yes, And when the ball comes your
way you make a play, it'll probably come your way
more often.

Speaker 5 (26:31):
Yeah. And he's a little different build.

Speaker 10 (26:32):
He's a big guy and he can go up and
make some tough fifty to fifty catches. So he's a
guy we need to continue to improve here down the stretch.

Speaker 4 (26:41):
I assume both Cam has performed well enough in practice
that he gets more featured more prominently in the rotation.

Speaker 5 (26:48):
Well, he'll be in the rotation. Yep.

Speaker 4 (26:51):
If you have a question for us, you can send
it into at UK Sports Network. You can giveus a
call on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line. You mentioned.
Seth McGann Allen seems to have bounced back pretty well
from his set back down at Georgia.

Speaker 10 (27:04):
Yeah, he's uh, you know, he's banged up. He's a
running back in the SEC and you know he took
a couple of good shots in the same spot in
the leg and so he's he's banged up, but he
wasn't out there today. We expect him back here this
week at full strength.

Speaker 4 (27:18):
You uh, the running if you look at the final numbers.
The running numbers obviously were not good at Georgia, but
it felt like early in that game you were kind
of where you wanted to be, at least getting four
yards a lot of times with Seth. I think he
averaged for Carrie, and then when you get behind, you're
having to throw more got to get away from what
you wanted to do.

Speaker 10 (27:39):
Yeah, and I think if you look at some of that,
not all of it, but you look at the efficiency
for us on first down with run game you know,
you know, pretty pretty good against a really good Georgia team.
You know where Georgia, we felt like on the our
defensive side of the ball, we were we were fairly
successful on them. Against first down, we did a very
poor job. And second down, you know, we really felt

(28:01):
like they hit us with the getting the ball out
of their hands with screen game. Uh, you know, free
release in the back if we're bringing pressure, you know,
just pop some you know plays on the perimeter. You know,
they mix it up very good, but kept off us
off balance, and we're very efficient on second down, and
then that leads to them being efficient on third and short,

(28:22):
you know instead of third and long.

Speaker 4 (28:23):
Yeah, they were. They were third and probably four or
less authority of the time. But it's it's funny. We
were talking about this with Brad last week. You hear
people talk about, you know, your first down defensive number,
especially against the run, third down defense. Nobody ever talks
about second down. That was what killed you.

Speaker 10 (28:39):
Yeah, no question, because we were fairly efficient on first down,
but not so much on second. We got to hold
them for all three times and sometimes four, you know.

Speaker 4 (28:49):
So, uh, the matchup this week with Texas in terms
of how aggressive they are defensive. How but and you
have a young quarterback do they do you notice teams
in these two sec games that the teams are blitzing
any more than they normally do because you have a

(29:09):
young quarterback.

Speaker 10 (29:10):
Any any quarterback in our league. You know, I think
every defensive coordinator and everybody will tell you. You know,
you want to make the quarter back uncomfortable, right and
and so you want to mix up your looks. You
want disguised coverages. You want to be able to to
get them off his mark, you know, and and create
some pressure. And sometimes it's just caving the pocket in

(29:31):
with four guys and making sure you got really.

Speaker 5 (29:32):
Good brush lanes.

Speaker 10 (29:34):
And so you're just trying to mix it up on
them and make them uncomfortable.

Welcome back into the March Stop Show presented by UK Healthcare.
If you have a question, send it in on social
media at UK Sports Network on x Twitter. If you prefer,
you can call us on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone
line as well. Chase has sent it a question at
UK Sports Network. Says, first of all, he was going
is going to be at the game Saturday, ready for
a home SEC win. Now he asks the question that

(33:30):
you're not going to answer, but we can find a
way to help him out a little bit. He says
he wants to know what the offensive game plan is
going to be and how you're going to attack the
Texas defense.

Speaker 5 (33:38):
Yeah, that wouldn't be I don't think you're going.

Speaker 4 (33:39):
To share that, but ye talk about some of the
challenges that you guys are putting together the game.

Speaker 10 (33:45):
I think you know it's fair to say because it's
stayed all the time. I mean, we have to have balance, right,
just what you and I talked about in the last segment.
Efficiency in the run game right in particular on first
second down. We can't live in a third and long
situation against guys like this, the way they can rush,
you know, cover, blitz, be multiple. It's not a world

(34:05):
we want to live in. Let's be honest. Nobody's real
comfortable in that in that situation, certainly against these guys.
So you know, those are some of the things that
we have to do.

Speaker 4 (34:15):
Thank you for the question. Chase at UK Sports Network,
if you have a question for coach Doops says, the
Cats get set to take on the Texas Longhorns. Let's
talk about the defensive side. And we had coached White
here with us last week talking about some of the
areas that you guys were trying to coach them up
in on that side of the ball, a lot of

(34:37):
yards giving up after the catch in the in the
back end of the defense. What can you do to
get that better at this time of year.

Speaker 10 (34:46):
Yeah, I think you know, that's something that you and
I have talked about, you know, probably each and every
week this year, and that that's not a good thing.
I mean, so you know, you know, when we get
up there and we've pressed at times and and you
know we've gotten beat a little you know, over the top,
you know, then we play off a little bit credit
some of these wideouts, you know, they're putting a lot

(35:08):
of stress on you, threatening you off the line, you know,
just you know, creating a five seven yard hitch into
a you know, explosive play. I mean, that can't happen,
you know, over and over again. It's happened too many times.
It's you know, there's really no excuse for it. I
think Brad and you know us, we try many different coverages,
many different ways to roll up protect them once in

(35:28):
a while, you know, put a guy under them, put
a guy over them, you know, you name it. We've
tried a lot of different things, but you know, and
I know and our players know. You know, it's it
comes down to it one on one and you have
to win your fair share of one on one situations.
And uh, you know, we haven't always done that. And again,
you know, we're playing some pretty talented teams with some

(35:51):
guys that could run outside and uh and and make
you miss. And so that area has you know, been
troublesome for us times this year.

Speaker 4 (36:00):
Nobody does tackling to the ground like a game situation
in practices, especially once you get into the season. So
how does the from where does the improvement come? Is
it maybe being in better position through studying your opponent
more or something like that.

Speaker 10 (36:16):
I think, you know, definitely, you know, the awareness, you know,
we have to improve in the awareness on when you
know and how you know much room you're giving somebody
and you know a lot of times they're they're solo
and our guy up, you know, on the on the
single receiver side, you know, putting people away from them
and making them win a one on one situation. You know,
when we can't put somebody under them or over them

(36:38):
all the time, you just have to win one on one.
So I think some of it is awareness, you know,
some of it is certainly tackling. Some of it is
just you know, simply you know, being confident in your
ability and not giving them too much space, you know,
and and you know, I think it will help as
we get DJ and some guys like that back and
try to get a little bit of a rotation where

(36:59):
we could get again out of the game for four
or five plays, get his feet back up underneath him,
get him catch his breath, and get somebody back in there.
In particular when we're playing these tempo teams with very
skilled wideouts.

Speaker 4 (37:09):
One guy that if he plays well, and DJ was
playing very well before he went out, can make a difference.

Speaker 5 (37:14):
Yeah, yeah, without a doubt.

Speaker 4 (37:17):
Let's get to call on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line.
Paul has a question about the offensive line. Paul, what
do you have?

Speaker 22 (37:24):
Hey, guys, how you doing? I love you? Coach stops
you guys is a green hill?

Speaker 10 (37:28):
Thanks Paul, Thank you.

Speaker 22 (37:33):
Really, all I'm thinking is, man, I've watched videos the teams,
I've seen the highlights a whole bunch. If you just
pick your offensive line, you're gonna be awesome. Your defense
is good, your special teams are good, your tight ends
are good your receivers. Cutter Bowley's the man because he's

(37:56):
so humble. He will live off getting the ball to
the right people more seconds.

Speaker 4 (38:04):
Yeah, talk about the offensive line.

Speaker 10 (38:07):
Yeah, I think, you know, and I think we have
definitely made some some strides in that area, you know,
I you know, I agree with Paul certainly at times.
But I think even Cutter will be the first one
to admit in h in these games, and you know
when you're watching it that there there has been some
protection there, There really has been and we, you know,
we we just as a whole have to be more efficient,

(38:30):
and Cutter again would be the first one to admit
that and say that.

Speaker 5 (38:33):
And there are times that there's no.

Speaker 10 (38:36):
Defending the offensive line when we just didn't give them
enough time or don't pick up the right blitz or
maybe it's the running back or you know, offensive line.
And then there were times when again it's there, and
you know, we have to be on time and in
rhythm and get rid of it and trust the football
and get it out of your hands. Watch the Monday
night game tonight, you know, just just watch an NFL

(38:58):
team and watch that ball come out of their hands.
You know, there's there's not a lot of time, so
you know, you have to be able to you know,
get a little bit. You have to be able to evade,
you know, some pressure and get some guys scrambling around
buying some time, which Cutter has done a nice job
and he kind of really does throw the ball very
well on the move, so you know he has to

(39:18):
do that a little more.

Speaker 4 (39:19):
As well when you're getting to the ball that quicker.
And this goes for the run game as well. Those
things rely on guys being able to get blocks down
the field. Your wide receivers, maybe tight ends are out
in space a little bit. How's that come along?

Speaker 10 (39:32):
Yeah, I mean we've done a nice job of getting
the ball on the perimeter. You know, we've you know,
we've gotten some runs on the perimeter and some screens
and you know some of those touch passes to Kendrick
Law have you know, created some explosives. So we've got
to continue to be good in that area as well.
Everybody's doing that, you know, whether it be a screen
or the touch pass, you know, getting the ball on

(39:52):
the perimeter.

Speaker 4 (39:54):

(42:48):
on the car's Pumpin' shop phone line. It's eight hundred
and six oh six four two sixty three, or inside
Lexington two eight o cats that is two two eighty seven.
We're talking a little bit about cutter bully and getting
comfortable with a game plan. One thing that kind of
stood out in the Georgia game one time, in particular,
he was a play where the fumble, you lost the
ball in the fumble early in the second half on

(43:09):
an overturn, and he was trying to get the guys
lined up quickly to get the ball stab before play
got stopped for a review, and you just saw a
little fire out of him. Hadn't seen as much out
of that from him, and I don't know is that
a sign he's getting a little more comfortable in the job,
because you want to see your quarterback have a little
of that fire.

Speaker 5 (43:27):
He definitely does. He is.

Speaker 10 (43:29):
You know, one of the things you love about him
is he's ultra competitive. And yes, he has a great demeanor.
He's a great young man. But when he gets out
there and he's mixing it up, he gets intense, and
you know there's a fine line there, right. You know
you want that, You want that out of your quarterback,
but you also you know want them thinking clearly and
making good decisions and all that. So you know he'll

(43:52):
he'll he'll figure it out. I trust him. You know,
he's been a good football player's whole life. Yes, he's young,
but he's getting better with every rep he's taking coaching,
and then you just got to go out there and
trust him and let him go play ball.

Speaker 4 (44:04):
Yeah, and at that position, nobody's going to be perfect,
so you just have to play through the mistakes and
learn from them.

Speaker 10 (44:10):
Yeah, exactly, And you know he has a lot of
confidence in himself, which I love.

Speaker 4 (44:14):
Let's go back to the other side of the ball.
We're talking about young guys on offense at the receiver
position in particular. I want to get you to talk
a little bit about CJ. Works, who made a couple
of big plays at Georgia. When Jeff Bokora and I
meet with the coordinators each week, we were talking with
Brad a couple of weeks ago, and he was really
talking about how high you guys are on CJ. Works

(44:35):
because you see him out there playing as a true freshman.
That tells you that he's made, you know, an impact,
to gain the trust to already have been.

Speaker 10 (44:42):
Out there, definitely, and he's also playing a position that's
very difficult, as you know that Sam could be our
medium nickel, you know, you name it. He has to
play in some space. He's got to you know, be
in coverage some obviously he comes off the edge quite
a bit, you know, but he's a he's a big guy.
You know, he has the that we're looking forward and
the size and all that. He's got to be what

(45:04):
six' five two, fifty.

Speaker 4 (45:05):
Yes they listed brand thought he thinks he could be.

Speaker 5 (45:09):
Too Seventy, yeah without a.

Speaker 10 (45:10):
Doubt he's definitely one of the outside linebackers that you,
know looks the way you want him. To and, uh you,
know he plays really good on his feet for a young,
guy and that's. Hard LIKE i, said that, position there's
a lot of little nuances and it's not just you,
know pin your ears back and go try to get the.

Speaker 5 (45:28):
Quarterback there's a lot to.

Speaker 10 (45:29):
It and he's learning and he's really taken the coaching
and he impressed us right away with just his ability
to play on his feet and play in, space, uh
and then also get after the. Quarterback so he's a
guy that you, know should be able to play multiple,
positions you, know as we move.

Speaker 4 (45:45):
Forward like guys Like Josh allen did.

Speaker 5 (45:48):
For exactly to put that on him at the, time.

Speaker 4 (45:52):
But not saying he's the next.

Speaker 10 (45:53):
But but but he he really, Is like as a,
freshman he's as good and bigger Than Josh josh. Was you, Know,
josh you, know you Give josh all the credit because
we've always talked about the work ethic that That josh
had and he he made himself a first round pick
and and uh he's making.

Speaker 5 (46:13):
Himself a franchise player in THE. Nfl so he with
his work. Ethic BUT.

Speaker 10 (46:17):
Cj is a great young, man great work, ethic takes,
coaching you, know very, humble you, know just puts his
head down and goes to. Work AND i just love
young guys like.

Speaker 4 (46:26):
That anybody else we talked, again young guys on the
offensive sidej is a. Freshman anybody Else the Young.

Speaker 10 (46:33):
Scott's been playing really good for. Us you, know he
plays the nickel and you, know he's got a lot
on his. Plate you, KNOW i feel like he's going
to be a really good. PLAYER i, MEAN dj is
still just a third year. Player, uh you, know can't
wait to get him, back and hopefully he'll he'll be
at full strength here this. Week but you, know, uh
there's you know that whole. Group Is smith playing better and.

(46:58):
Better you, know he's he's he's getting better with every. Rep, so,
yeah he's Doing he's he's coming.

Speaker 4 (47:05):
Along his brothers on the.

Speaker 5 (47:08):
Team but there's a, Yeah jacob's coming off a knee.
INJURY a bunch Of, Smiths, yeah a bunch Of.

Speaker 10 (47:13):
Smiths, yeah. Absolutely you Know jayden is playing good as.
Well but, Yeah, Gerrod i'm Sorry jacob coming off the knee.
Injury that's bothering him a little bit right. Now he
had a pretty serious knee injury a year, ago so
he's still coming back from.

Speaker 4 (47:27):
That you Mentioned Jaden smith had a big playoff an
edge blitz earlier this. Season he's a guy that was
digged up with The georgia. Games you said today he's.

Speaker 5 (47:36):
Back he is. Back, yeah He's he's a tough.

Minutes left on this edition Of The Mark Stoop, show
presented BY Uk. Healthcare if you have a, question send
it along AT Uk Sports network or call on The
Clark's Pumping shop phone. Line As kentucky gets set to
take on The Texas, longhorns who have a great tradition
in a lot of different. Ways ONE i think of
is some of the great running, Backs Earl, Campbell Ricky,

(52:58):
Williams Heisman trophy. Winners who's the toughest running back you
ever had to prepare? For been building a, defense either
as a head coach or a coordinating a, defense.

Speaker 10 (53:08):
Youh it may go back all the. Way and, again
don't quote me exactly WHAT i would. Imagine sark crossed
over With Reggie. Bush you know back there AT usc
he was very very difficult because he was so, good
you know in the past, game you, know and and,
uh you know really JUST i remember the conflict they

(53:30):
used to put us, in you, know with, him you,
know almost like an empty. Set but coming out of,
backfield you, know in the stress that it put on
because if you you, know if you dropped in zones
and you're trying to take away the big wide out
what they have at that, time you would Know tom come.

Speaker 17 (53:45):
On.

Speaker 10 (53:45):
Uh but, anyway if you're dropping back underneath, him they
dump it down To. REGGIE i, mean, yes he just
Make he would just hurt you so, bad you, know
out of the run. Game and if you look at
the Game saturday as, well you know Against Oklaho HOME,
u there were there were two plays in, particular AND
i want to say they were both third downs that

(54:07):
they that they did a nice job of getting it
to the back and one of them would created an explosive,
play probably a twenty five yard game with a dump
to the running. Back you, know this past, weekend so
you know they're still you, know hurting, you you, know
with the free releases and then you, know check releasing
the back out of there and getting some yardage from
some very talented. Guys you guys use but there's a

(54:30):
lot of good. BACKS i, mean you could go to,
home BUT i, MEAN i mean what every, week you,
know every WEEK i would, say you, know we play very,
good good running.

Speaker 4 (54:38):
Backs you guys threw it a little bit more to seth.
McGown i gave three catches in The georgia. Game, uh
that's something that he has in His he.

Speaker 5 (54:46):
Does he, does he. Is he is very good out
of the.

Speaker 10 (54:49):
Backfield so hopefully we'll continue to be able to get
him the ball some out of the backfield because he
has a weapon out of.

Speaker 4 (54:54):
There. YEAH i don't know if you talked with Coach
sarkisian when you guys were coaches meetings in the spring
or any think up just what a guy like Arch
manning is is dealing with all the hype that comes with,
that because you, Know i'm sure his uncles and his
grandfather and his dad have all prepared him for, it
but it's still different to live through.

Speaker 10 (55:12):
It, well you, Know, no we haven't talked about it
because you, know it's not my.

Speaker 5 (55:17):
Place and you, KNOW i think you.

Speaker 10 (55:19):
Know i've probably Heard sark say this AND i could reiterate,
it AND i believe in it as. Well arch didn't
ask for all, that you know WHAT i. Mean he's
not sitting. There he's not some brash young. Man he's
confident in. Himself he goes about his. Business you, know
by all, indications he has an unbelievable work. Ethic he's
a very likable young. Man you, know he's not asking
for all that. Attention he's just putting his head, down

(55:41):
going to work and trying to win games like any
of these college. Kids and so you, know he can't help.
It you, know he's got some famous uncles and all,
that and you, KNOW i have a ton of respect
for him and his family and the way he goes
about his. Business and he's gonna be a great, one you,
know and you could see that each and every week
him getting better and. Better but you, know so you,
know that's all you could say on that. Front but

(56:03):
it's the same as our. Guys it's just Like, cutter you,
know we have very very high hopes for. Him i've
been talking about him for two. Years you, know he's
just a red shirt, freshman and you, know we're just worried,
about you, know Putting cutter in a position to be
successful weekend and week out and getting better and better
and getting more comfortable with each rep in each, game.

Speaker 4 (56:22):
Because you, know he's a confident young. Guy he believes in.
Himself but still you want to give a young guy
as best chance you can to have success to then build.

Speaker 5 (56:33):
On, yeah and then you, KNOW i.

Speaker 10 (56:35):
AGREE i felt like last, week you're playing a Great georgia,
team we know, that and a, team you, Know georgia
team coming off a loss the week. Before you, know at,
home you, know we're definitely geared. Up BUT i Thought
cutter did some really good. Things AND i thought we
did some good things. Offensively, yes we need to be, Better,
yes we're you, know need to be better in a
lot of, areas, defensively special, teams you name. It BUT
i do feel Like cutter was getting more and more

(56:57):
confidence and he was getting.

Speaker 4 (56:58):
COMFORTABLE i don't know if you saw this. Video we
were talking About Josh Mines allen. Earlier his young son
was the honorary captain for The jags. Game wesley for
The jags, game so he goes out with his dad
for the coin.

Speaker 10 (57:13):
Toss, yeah you, KNOW i just saw just a, Glimpse.
Tony you're gonna have to get that to, me you,
Know and it's really. Kind BUT i saw it just,
briefly whether it be ON espn or a highlight or.
Something but that makes us so happy they were back this.
YEAR i got to See, wesley you, know And josh

know and so it was great to see him and.

Speaker 5 (57:34):

Stuff You Should Know
Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
