Welcome back into our show presented by UK Healthcare, as
we will talk Kentucky football with Coach Mark Stoops for
the next hour is the Wildcats got back out onto
the practice field today to start preparing for Tennessee, and coach,
that's always where we start these conversations each week. How
it looked today?
Speaker 11 (05:33):
It looked good.
Speaker 12 (05:34):
I mean, obviously, guys are very disappointed. I had time
to process it a little bit, and you know, we
watched the film before we go out there and have
quite a long long meetings today, and uh, you know,
and there was so much good you know, so many
good things, and then there's always those you know, one, two, three,
(05:54):
four plays that you you feel like you left on
the field, and you know, fortunately we came up short.
Because I really greatly appreciate our players' effort, you know,
not only Saturday, but what they've done to get to
that point, to work so hard, to play so well
for the vast majority.
Speaker 11 (06:13):
Of that game, and you know, it's heartbreaking for them.
Speaker 12 (06:17):
But they also can see, you know, with the investment
and with the hard work and what they're doing, they're
very confident in the improvement. And that's what we have
to focus on, you know, because you know, whatever we
decide to focus on is how we're going to feel,
you know, and you know, even for us and the
staff and all that once you get through it Saturday
and it was heartbreaking after the game, and get into
(06:39):
work for us coaches Sunday morning, and you know, if
we we hang on to the what if and you know,
and you know, a few inches short then and that's
how you're going to feel, you know. But we you know,
have to choose to look at all the good things
we did and how we got to that point and
continue to try to improve on that.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Choosing what to focus on it. It's an interesting way
to describe it because I would think that's that's actually
what has to is the way to frame it up,
because it's human nature to be tremendously disappointed. They know
they should have won the game, and there could be
a reaction, just like in any sport if you're out,
you're playing golf, whatever you do, you miss something you
(07:19):
know you should have had. There's a natural tendency to
you know, tag your head or you have you have
to sometimes push yourself to make it go the other way.
And I would assume that's more the individual than something
a coach can really coach in that next week.
Speaker 12 (07:32):
It is, but they you know, we always are going
to own our film and watch it and own the
good and the bad as a team, as an organization,
and you know, areas where the coaches can do better,
areas where the players can do better. We're all in
it together. And you know, again, the players, you know,
we have to you know, they they do recognize the
improvement that I've said it on here numerous times, and
(07:54):
about their attitude, about their work ethic, about their desire
to play well for each other, and it's it's important
to them as a team, you know. So you know
when they see the improvement, and you know that gives
them excitement. But again there's always the frustration piezs in
the for me, you know phase and and all that.
And I feel for our players, uh, you know, first
(08:18):
and foremost. But then I care, you know, for the
whole you know state, you know, and our fans and
the people that said it postgame. But I'll say it again.
I mean, the atmosphere was fantastic. And I understand, you know,
when how you know, people may feel about me like that,
that's understanding, that's warranted, you.
Speaker 11 (08:36):
Know what I mean, I get it.
Speaker 12 (08:37):
But our players deserve that kind of atmosphere and I
appreciate it. They appreciate it and they work very hard,
you know, and so I really appreciate them. There were
so many ex players back there. You know, the fans
were great. It was a great night, and I wish,
you know, we would come up. You know, like I said,
where you know it was. You know, it was very
very close, and you know that you know, to getting
(09:00):
it over the goal line. You know, we're literally you know,
I felt like after watching on the coach's copy, I
felt we're inches short on third down.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Yeah, actually the third down play you're about after Cutter
scrambles when you the pass wasn't there. Yeah, second down
he gets tackled outside the one between the one and
the two. So you actually got to within around a
foot or so for the fourth down place that's.
Speaker 11 (09:25):
Where they marked it.
Speaker 12 (09:27):
But you know, on film, I felt like it was
it was real close to reviewable, and and you know
we wouldn't have got it because of the way it
was marked. I'm not complaining of them. I'm not saying
as in, but I'm saying after watching, it was so
darn close. And uh no, fourth down wasn't as close
because they got to his ankles. They saw him jump
on the first one. Now you know the difference between
(09:48):
the third and fourth down is is on third down,
you know he really can't extend the ball because you
don't want to get it knocked out and fumble, so
you can't do that. But on fourth you really can.
But but you know they they didn't have that opportunity
to jump.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
We're going to get to our first break. We'll come
back and continue our chat with Coach Stoops a little later.
We'll get to some of your questions. It is the

Saturday's game between Kentucky and Tennessee is presented by UK Healthcare,
the official healthcare partner of the Big Blue Nation and
Kentucky's number one hospital. We are here chatting with coach
Mark Stoops says the Wildcats look to bounce back against
the Tennessee Valls on Saturday night at Kroger Field. And
this is a Tennessee team that had a tough night
(13:50):
against Alabama, but has had some very good performances this
season on both sides of the ball. Numbers are very
impressive on offense and defense.
Speaker 11 (13:58):
Yeah, definitely, very much.
Speaker 12 (13:59):
So, you know, offensively, you know, probably you know a
little a little better.
Speaker 11 (14:06):
Than they've been.
Speaker 12 (14:06):
And I know that's saying a lot because they're they're
always good, you know, on both sides. But you know,
I think the quarterback is playing at a really high
level and it's a credit to them, uh you know,
coming in that lage coming in the summer and he's
you know, but he's got it, has a lot of
experience playing very well. They have difference spankers at wide receiver.
Three really elite wideouts. I think they're you know, their
(14:29):
offensive line is probably the best unit we've played all year,
So very good there, and you know, saying with their
defensive line that lead the SEC in sacks, very disruptive
upfront and playing good at all three levels.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
It'll be an interesting matchup then because I think your
defensive line is playing really well. We've talked about that
seven recent weeks. But those guys are getting even more
tackles than typically you know, the D line guys do,
and coaches always have that affecting the quarterback even more
so than than sacking. And you guys did the to
the highest degree of the season on Saturday.
Speaker 12 (15:03):
We really did, you know, probably you know, as good
defensive performances, you know, since in a long time time.
Speaker 11 (15:12):
I don't know, you're the you're the history guy.
Speaker 12 (15:14):
You don't want to I can't remember back too many years,
you know right now, but uh but it's it was definitely,
you know, very impressive what our defense did. I want
to say, the longest drive in the night for for
Texas for points was like forty yards, you know, and
so and kicked field goal.
Speaker 11 (15:32):
So really played a very good defensive game.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
To ten of their points were set up by big
punt returns. What did you see on tape when you
looked at at that that can be fixed?
Speaker 12 (15:46):
Well, you know, it's it's heartbreaking because we gave up
more yardage and those two returns than we haven't roughly
that you could look it up. I mean, call me
out when you're off by seven yards, I want say, roughly,
we give up more yards on those two punt returns
than we have in the last two years combined.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
Oh my goodness. Yeah, say, it hadn't been an issue
all season.
Speaker 11 (16:08):
It hasn't been an issue in two years, you know.
Speaker 12 (16:10):
So, But it was Saturday, and it wasn't good enough,
and we had guys in position, you know, bottom line
where there were you know, you know, often times it's
you know, sometimes when you get a big return, it's
because of a poor kick. But that was not the case.
They were good kicks, and they were high, and we
had guys in.
Speaker 11 (16:27):
Position, you know.
Speaker 12 (16:28):
And on the second one we had guys that you know,
we had one guy and complete you know, right in
front of them, but you know, in very good elite
returners made a miss. And then we had some guys
that got a little out of position and the next thing,
you know, you know they're getting getting some yardage and uh,
you know that just definitely is something that can't happen.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
You always believe you have the best guys out there
for all the different roles. When you go into a game,
then you see how somebody plays. Is that something where
it's you're confident in the guys that are out there
that can't they can fix their mistakes.
Speaker 12 (17:04):
We definitely can. And then you know we have some
guys down as well. You know, Nasr has been our
gunner for a couple of years and he's an elite
gunner and he's been hurt and he was hurt this
past week, you know, so that didn't help.
Speaker 11 (17:18):
But you know, no excuses.
Speaker 12 (17:19):
I mean, we had guys in position they can make
the play, and we have other guys that just have
to get to their landmarks and you don't do a
better job and you know, be on top of it.
Sometimes our punter, you know, he kicks it so well
and so high and so deep that a lot of
times they you know, they may count on other guys
to make the play and that you never know. And
I said it to the team today, I say it
(17:40):
to him every week. I mean, you never know. What
plays are going to be the different story winning and
lose it. You just don't know. It's not always the obvious,
and you know, we'll continue to harp on it. But
our guys, again, they played relentless, you know, for the
entire night and all sides. But you know in those
plays we had you know, you know, we had a
guy who misattacklem and we had some guys that were
(18:02):
a little out of position.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
What everybody's healthy this year is your fourth corner as well.
DJ Waller would be in contingent to start. He his
ears out going into that game. Dj, you think is
going to play, and then he has an issue that
pops up during warm ups and so he can't go.
So puts an even heavier burden on Nichols and Hardaway,
and Nichols in particular as a guy whose name we
(18:25):
called frequently in that game.
Speaker 12 (18:26):
Yeah, he was our one of our defensive player of
the game, him and Jordan Lovett. But it does, it
puts a lot of stress on those guys. They have
to play a lot of snaps. They have, you know,
have to hold up against some you know, elite guys
outside and you know, so that's where we need other
guys to step up and be able to make place
and you know, depth, you know is an issue, but
it's an issue for everybody.
Speaker 11 (18:47):
We have to be able to overcome that.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
On the defensive side, we talked about how well your
guys played. I think there's one status the fewest yards
allowed and fewest first downs, which is one hundred and
seventy nine yards and eight first downs to a rank
opponents since the nineteen seventy six Peach Bowl, when North
Carolina had one hundred and eight yards and five first down.
So I thought that was a particularly impressive number for
to speak to what your guys did on that side
(19:11):
of the ball. Was it simply a matter of just
being more full focused, because I don't think you certainly
did make any significant scheme changes or personnel changes.
Speaker 12 (19:20):
No, you know, we really didn't. I mean we just
you know, we we executed at a very high level.
Guys made clean tackles. You hear me talking about it
all the time. I get asked in the media, and
I'm not criticizing them for asking me. You know, everybody does.
You know, you take the good with the bad, But
one week it's like, why are you're not tackling well
and what's going on. And the other week, you know,
we're going to do a clinic on tackling, you know
(19:40):
what I mean, Like you know, so you know, it's
it's it's frustrating at times, and it you know, sometimes
it is one on one. Sometimes it's just one, you know,
one against one, you know, and you're playing you know,
some of the most elite talent in the country right
here a week in and week out, and sometimes they
make you miss. And that's what they do. I mean,
look at Seth he makes a lot of people miss,
(20:01):
you know. And so you know, we just I thought
we played really good. We had a really good plan.
The kids, you know, really were dialed in and focused
and played at a very high level. And we had
guys in proper position. We were disruptive and and you know,
we we had them definitely you know, frustrated and off
balance because they really you know, tried, you know, just
(20:24):
a lot of run game, in a lot of pass game.
They hit the screen. They only hit two explosives on us.
They hit the screen, which we had guys in position
on that and one guy came under a block. But
then and then the little play action over the middle.
You know that that they hit with our you know
with the play action pass. That's going to happen some
against those those type of guys and uh, you know,
but those were the only two explosives all night.
Speaker 2 (20:46):
Going to get to a break and we'll be right back.
We got some of your questions. You can send those
in at UK Sports Network or call them a Clark's
Pumping Shop phone line Toato Kats inside Lexington one eight

Welcome back into our show. It's presented by UK Healthcare
and the Wildcats. We'll kick it off at seven forty
five Eastern on Saturday night at Krogerfield against the Tennessee
Vaulls and we want you to tune in on the
UK Radio network as well. And you can also go
to the website each week Ukathletics dot com and see
(23:38):
how to sync up the radio broadcast to the TV coverage.
And there's a tutorial there that will help you understand
how to do that. Time for our Alumni Hall Fan
Question of the Week, Cutter Bowlly makes his fourth start,
second at home in the Texas game. Had to go
twice on the road in SEC play, so through four starts,
(23:59):
what's the what's the ways you have seen the most
improvement in Cutters.
Speaker 12 (24:03):
Yeah, I'm very impressed with the improvement that he's made.
He's worked really hard, He's very confident. It's hard to
shake him. He's super competitive, and I think it's just
the feel of the game. It's very hard to simulate
how big and fast these guys are and how fast
the game is going. And so you could see his
(24:27):
presence in the pocket and how he's you know, evading
some pressure, you know, getting out, you know, off schedule,
throwing the ball, getting off schedule, running it, then staying
in the pocket, maybe just moving you know, side stepping
or stepping up in the pocket and delivering the football.
I thought the touch that he's shown has been super
(24:49):
impressive as well. And you could see and you know,
I'm not but like, when we make a quarterback I
even saying any team or anything, but when we make
a quarterback uncomfortable. You know, sometimes even when they have time,
they rush it because they feel like they're going to
get pressure. And Cutter has settled in and so when
he has the time, you know, he's delivering the you
(25:10):
know the you know, he's making the routine look routine.
And then he's also making some special throws. And then
I thought he's done a really good job, like in
a couple of plays. I'm thinking of one in particular Saturday,
a third down steps up in the pocket, Guy's got
on him and he's going to throw a little under
and there's a guy under it, a guy over him,
and he drops it in there. That's not always easy
to do, and you know, so he's made the touch passes,
(25:32):
and so I'm very encouraged and very pleased with his
progress and excited about it.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
Most of the incompletions are at least in the right spot.
I think I've won early in the game. Texas the
way they play defense, they keep their safeties back because
they trust those guys up front so much, understandably, so
you don't get a lot of shots to go deep
against them. But you took one of the first half
and he throws it in the perfect spot to Hardy,
who actually got both hands on the ball, and their
(26:00):
defender made an excellent play. Yeah, but the ball was
in the right spot.
Speaker 12 (26:03):
It wasn't a great spot, and Hardy, to Harley's credit,
went up and got it and was definitely pulling it
down and the defender made a great throw and then uh,
you know, one other one to Hardley, you know, on
that same side and you know, just a touch outside,
but he was cut. He was definitely covered. And again
the cutter put in a great spot and he made
the catch and he was just a little outside.
Speaker 2 (26:22):
Yeah, but if you're going to miss, miss away from
the defender, no question. Please visit Alumni Hall on X
to respond with your answer to the question of the weekend.
You'll have a chance to win a gift card courtesy
of our friends at Alumni Hall. Let's go to the
Clark's Pumping Shop phone line. Peter, what do you have
for us?
Speaker 12 (26:40):
Hey Peter, Hey coach, Ye hear me, Yes, we did
to hear you, got you, Peter.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
Uh.
Speaker 22 (26:47):
My question was just about just some of the short
yard situation we had in the third down and fourth
and goal. We practiced Dante jumping both times. It seemed
to jump a little bit early, and it's kind of
all was the process behind that to play golf?
Speaker 12 (27:03):
Yeah, yeah, it's a good question. I mean, typically no,
we don't like to jump. In that case, I cannot
blame Dante. There was definitely a lot of a lot
of pressure in there and.
Speaker 11 (27:17):
You know, it's it's it's tough, you know.
Speaker 12 (27:21):
You know, I use the phrase sometimes, you know, with
running backs when they do certain things, you know, you
act like you coach them, though you didn't. I easily
use the phrase that's between him and God, and uh,
you know. And so with running backs it's instinctual a
lot because everything changes very quickly and no play is
the same really, And with that situation, we would prefer
(27:42):
that they did not jump, but I couldn't blame them
on that third down. And again after watching the coach's
tape on that in every angle, I mean, it breaks
my heart because he made a good leap and I mean,
I'm telling you it appeared to me on that on
the coaches tape that I mean it was with inches
and uh you know, and so you know, I think,
you know, after that on third down, I mean, anybody
(28:04):
can and I know this color is not Peter's not.
But but we could debate, you know, what they're run
and all that, and that's fair, that's fair game, you know, Uh,
criticism when it doesn't work, and we accept that, and
we also look at a lot of different ways, you know,
to get that yard and I'll say this. You know,
from our standpoint, you know, we had critical stoppage first
(28:27):
first possession of the second half. We stopped them on
second and short and third and short. We don't even
put the game in overtime if we don't stop them
in short yardage, you know. And they tried QB run
and we knocked that out. And you know, and so
sometimes against really good teams, you know, those are hard.
But but again I accept and understand looking at different
ways to get that yard and we will.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
C J Works made one of those tackles on dating.
Speaker 11 (28:51):
He sure did.
Speaker 2 (28:52):
He's playing. He's making plays each week now.
Speaker 12 (28:54):
Yeah, and that was QB run, which is even harder
because they're adding another number to the run game.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
A couple of things on the sequence in the the
end of your possession of overtime, Well you're there at
the three to begin with. Is that a situation at
all where you look at your two point play.
Speaker 11 (29:08):
Sheet that that's what that play in particular?
Speaker 12 (29:11):
And I don't want to like act like I'm being
critical of our coaches, but coaches is I'm just being honest,
you know what I mean? With fans and people that
you know have opinions, and like, I'm being open and
that is one where I would you know, like.
Speaker 11 (29:26):
To have over as well.
Speaker 12 (29:27):
The first the p and three possession three after we
hit the screen and you got it first in first
and goal on the three. You know, I think that's
one that we could rethink because we're bringing a lot
of big bodies in and they're bringing a lot of
big bodies in.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
When that gets no game, the second play is something
that you try.
Speaker 11 (29:50):
I like.
Speaker 12 (29:50):
I like the second play a lot, you know, the direction, misdirection,
play action and and really good play and Cutter I
thought did an excellent job. They covered it, played zone
and not man and covered it well. And then Cutter
did a nice job at getting a feel for it
and being patient and trying and really lowering his shoulder
(30:13):
and got a tough two yards. At that point, we
were vested, you know what I mean, we were we
were half yard or yard away, you know, so you know,
went at it with a big back and you a
big line, and you know, we had been much better
this year in short yardage until this game. And again
credit them, and credit our defense for for critical stops
(30:34):
on short yards as well, including and again you and
I had talked about the ball bouncing our way, and
you know, including there when we turn it over when
we give them the ball on the five or the
six after the punt return we caused a fumble, yes,
and uh and you know lo and behold the one
guy they have in the area falls on it, and
(30:55):
you know it did not bounce our way. But again,
what will we be talking about right now? Off our
defense stopped and it was cam a huge hit.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
When it's fourth then in less than one fourth and
half yard foot whatever it is there in your mind?
Is there any was there any thought of I'll kick
it and kind of at that point except you're probably
gonna go to a second overtime.
Speaker 11 (31:16):
No, no, no, I really didn't.
Speaker 12 (31:19):
You know, thought processes, and again open to criticism, accept it,
take it.
Speaker 11 (31:23):
I get it.
Speaker 12 (31:23):
That comes with the job, you know, especially in that
situation when it doesn't work. I totally get it. No
offense taken. But here's the thought process.
Speaker 11 (31:33):
You know.
Speaker 12 (31:33):
I felt like, with the way we were playing defense,
we get a half a yard, we have a great
chance to win that game.
Speaker 2 (31:40):
It's gonna be hard for them to match.
Speaker 12 (31:42):
It's gonna be hard for them to win that game,
So I mean, why not go for it? But and
again I'm not being sarcastic, but I mean everyone will
play to win.
Speaker 11 (31:50):
Play it. You know you don't ever play to win? Well,
I played to win.
Speaker 2 (31:54):

Brew, Welcome back in to the MARKETOOP Show presented by
UK Healthcare and if you have a question. You can
set it in on x at UK Sports Network, or
(35:18):
you can give us a call on the Clark's Pump
and Shop phone line, as Peter did a few moments
ago to finish up on our discussion the last year.
I was thinking about this yesterday. The Georgia game it
was you played, made the percentage plays on a fourth
down later percentage decision on a fourth down call late
in that game, and and you get criticism for that,
(35:41):
and you go for it and fourth and one, and
you know, you can debate about should you kick the
field goal or not. The thing is, if it doesn't work,
it's uh, there's always going to be criticism of it
or any coach. And the thing that gives you is
the freedom to do what you think is best.
Speaker 11 (35:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (35:56):
For sure, you can't let any outside you know, influence
come into your decision. You have to, you know, do
what you believe is best for your team and give
you the best chance to win.
Speaker 11 (36:08):
You know, I know, you know.
Speaker 12 (36:10):
With that decision, I completely understand you know, people's opinion
and you know and understand that and everything. But I know,
even in defeat, I could live with my decision there.
I know, if I went the other way. If I
kicked the ball and lost it in double overtime or
you know, triple overtime or anything like that, I would
(36:31):
have a hard time living with that.
Speaker 11 (36:33):
The rest of my life because you were so close
to me, well sick, you know, half yard.
Speaker 12 (36:36):
From you know, having a great chance to be Texas
at home, you know again, which I want to do
for a fan base, for our players, for everybody, and
you know, so I would I would have a hard
time living with.
Speaker 11 (36:45):
The other way.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
Uh, your offense racked up three hundred and ninety five
total yards. Texas entered the game eleventh of the nation
in total defense, and only one team, Florida, had managed
to get above three hundred total yards against them. They
have a bunch of guys are gonna be in the NFL.
Speaker 12 (37:00):
Yeah, I agree in another team that I have a
ton of respect for, you know, in Ohio State, you know,
and and you know what they did, what Texas did
defensively against them as well. So that again, that's that's
what I choose to focus on tom right, That's what
I have to now.
Speaker 11 (37:15):
You know, the result is the result.
Speaker 12 (37:17):
I wish it was different, can't change that, but have
to focus on all the positive things we did and
the growth that we made. You know, I talked about
it earlier, but you and I could touch on it,
you know.
Speaker 11 (37:27):
With Cutter.
Speaker 12 (37:28):
Another thing that was that I was super happy about
was the fact that he was thirty one to thirty
nine and you know, close to eighty percent completion percentage.
I mean, I haven't had that Bill Ransdell's in the
fan and he might have been the last one to
throw for eighty percent here did you Bill?
Speaker 11 (37:44):
No?
Speaker 2 (37:45):
Well, but but he he did complete twenty of twenty
three when they beat Florida in nineteen eighty six.
Speaker 11 (37:51):
Well, there you go. I loved dollar Bill. There you go.
Speaker 12 (37:56):
I figured you would give you a shout out there.
But I was very excited about Cutter, you know, completing
that that many you know, football's against a very good
football team, and that's you know some of the things
I talked about where the improvement come in, you know,
with you know, buying time, throwing it the touch passes,
throwing it on time, in rhythm, you know, you name it.
Speaker 11 (38:15):
I thought he did a really good job.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
Something that Bush Handen talked about last week and the
lead up to the game was helping get Cutter to
a point at which he's more decisive, and you never
know how quickly that improvement is going to happen. But
he looked as the most decisive he's been in his
time here.
Speaker 11 (38:32):
For sure.
Speaker 12 (38:33):
And I think Bush has done a really good job
with him, because you know, in practice every day and
I'm staying it right with right behind Bush and right
around there, and and it's you know, he's been very
much pushing that and being decisive. And here's your read.
Here's one, here's two, here's three. We got to make
a decision, and and he's doing that. He's playing that way,
(38:53):
and you know, the more each week that we're doing
good against good. We did some two minutes last week
against each other, and it's making him just make decisions quickly,
even in practice.
Speaker 2 (39:02):
Yeah, you mentioned Cutter's percentage seventy nine point four. I
think it was the best since Dusty Bonner in ninety nine.
But Bill Ranstell is the standard single game completion percentage
that twenty to twenty three against Florida twenty Nealy just
handed me the record.
Speaker 11 (39:16):
Against the school record. There you go.
Speaker 12 (39:18):
I didn't even I didn't I really didn't.
Speaker 11 (39:20):
Know, but I figured, you know, with with with the
man right there, I figured it was up there.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
Show that to Cutter, that's what he's got to work
catch right where that's his goal. Talking about him, let
me ask you about a couple of other young guys
on on the offense. Well one special teams. DJ Miller
gets his first action, gets his first two catches, one
of which was on your last driving regulation where it's
a third and one I believe, and he makes a
tough catch, which to me says something for Cutter having
(39:47):
the confidence to go to him and then making that.
Speaker 12 (39:49):
Cach and he was he was covered, Yeah, you know
he was. He was covered, and you know it was
one of those short yardage, quick game routes that they're
going to jump. And he made a tough catch and
cut her through it in a tough location, and he
made the catch and converted, got what four or five
more yards and I want to say we spiked it
and kicked it right after that, you know, I'm mistaken.
Speaker 2 (40:07):
He is a guy that I know you guys were
very excited about. Had a little bit of an injury
issue in training camp that slowed his progress, but now
has worked his way into the rotation Cam Miller the
game before down at Georgia. So you have a couple
of rookies that give you a lot of potential for
some upside in the second half of the season.
Speaker 12 (40:26):
It definitely excites me because you know, DJ's a guy
we talked about since last spring. You know, Cam got
here in the summer, and but you know, just the
urgency and what it takes, it's it's hard. I'm not
saying it's impossible, but it's just hard for freshmen, especially
when they missed some time. And it's you know, really
good to see DJ back out there and he's he's
practiced better and and you know you've heard me talk
(40:49):
about that, you know, several weeks in a row. Now,
you know, just with the urgency and the way we're practicing,
I feel like, you know, we're definitely making some strides.
Speaker 11 (40:57):
And you know, he's a perfect example of that.
Speaker 2 (41:00):
One another young guy we'll talk about. Will we come
right back, but right now we need to get to
a breaker and want to remind you to join us

and women's golf coach Golda Borsta is coming up at
the top of the hour. Let's get to the Clark's
(43:58):
Pumping Shop phone line. David, what do you have for
Coach Stoops? Hey, David.
Speaker 6 (44:04):
The world's words in the American English language are touchdown Kentucky.
Let's have a few of those this Saturday night.
Speaker 2 (44:11):
Okay, amen, And I.
Speaker 6 (44:13):
Hear you, yeah, Coach, I heard you talking about the
decisions you had to make, whether Phil go or first
down or touchdown. It's a tough job, man. I don't
I don't envy you. I was a judge for ten years.
No matter what decision I made, Coach, it was one
side was not happy. So just keep doing what you're doing.
(44:34):
And Coach, we have we have some wins out there
on the schedule still, Okay, I know we do, and
I want you to believe that, and I want your
team to believe that we have some wins out there,
just like big old pretty peaches, right and pick them
from the tree, all right, So I'll pick up some peaches.
Speaker 11 (44:49):
And thanks David.
Speaker 6 (44:53):
The tempo. I love the tempo this last Saturday night.
And I'm not going to ask you whether you can
do again too, because I know with the prolific offense
they have, it's gonna be, uh, it's gonna be you know,
ball management and ball control is going to be.
Speaker 2 (45:09):
A big issue.
Speaker 6 (45:10):
But do you think we can put that in the
game plan? Coach?
Speaker 11 (45:14):
Yeah, thanks, David, appreciate you man.
Speaker 12 (45:17):
Thanks, And yeah, you're making some decisions that are pretty important,
you know, so yeah, as a judge, so I get it.
But yeah, I mean the tempo was definitely a good
change up for us, and it gave us some rhythm,
you know. Fortunately, you know for us, as we play better,
(45:37):
as we convert, as we get first downs, then you
could mix some of that in there.
Speaker 11 (45:42):
You know.
Speaker 12 (45:43):
Another stat that I was very impressed with this this
last week was the twenty six first downs. If you
get twenty six first downs, it led to how many
graded plays? How many plays do we have like eighty
eighty six eighty six and so you know, it leads
to eighty six plays and then it leads to guys
touching ball, you know. So sometimes it's like whise, Josh
or why well? You know, and so when you're getting
(46:05):
that many plays, you're getting first downs, guys are going
to touch the ball, and uh, you know it's gonna,
you know, help.
Speaker 11 (46:12):
It's gonna help with recruiting.
Speaker 12 (46:13):
It's gonna help with a lot of things, you know,
get in touches and get in plays. So, you know,
I think David brings up a good point there with
the with the tempo. Yeah, it is a little different
with Tennessee. But that's not to say that we can't
use it and sprinkle it in. I mean we're not,
you know, gonna use Temple all the time, you know,
because you know, just the style of play that we have.
But it was a good mix up. It was a
(46:35):
good change up. But what made it efficient was the
fact that we were converting first downs.
Speaker 2 (46:39):
When you try to go tempo. A couple of times, uh,
Texas was subbing and the officials allowed on the sub
and I know there was some question about it, was
that should that have shud they have been allowed to
do that. You were explaining to Jeff and Gabe and
I after the game off the air that that the
officials handled that correctly.
Speaker 11 (46:57):
How could I say this without getting fined? That was
totally legal what they.
Speaker 2 (47:01):
Did because the guy went out of bounds.
Speaker 11 (47:04):
Our guy went out of bounce on our sideline.
Speaker 12 (47:06):
It was totally if you had been yet, it was
totally legal by them and in officials were right to
hold that.
Speaker 2 (47:12):
So that's all you need to say.
Speaker 12 (47:14):
If that's all, well, let's just say I was trying
to sub to my advantage at other times and I
was flagged for having twelve on the field when later
you know, well, I can't.
Speaker 11 (47:27):
I can't say no.
Speaker 2 (47:28):
I was just kind of clearing up that particular part
of it. It's different when your guy, say, catches the ball,
I think because maybe Kendrick did and goes out of bounds.
Because as you were telling us for the if you're
and you could be in that situation too, when you're
the opposing coach on defense, you can't tell when the
guy comes off the sideline.
Speaker 12 (47:44):
Yeah, say, technically a receiver, a receiver could catch it
and go ten yards out of bounds and you could
run a tight end not you know, I don't know
if I've ever seen that, but it could.
Speaker 11 (47:52):
It could, you know, So that's the idea of it.
Speaker 12 (47:54):
And so therefore when I played tempo teams, you know,
if the ball goes to their sidelines and out of bounds,
we automatically sub And why Sark did that? And it
is you know, I mean, it doesn't take a rocket scientist,
because they were close plays. They were close plays on
the sideline, and with subbing, it gives them a moment
(48:14):
to maybe catch a replay or whatever. And you see,
I mean I don't know that, but I mean anybody
would do it, you know what I mean, It makes sense.
And so they were trying to slow it down to
get a look to make sure Hardly had his feet
in and I can't remember the other play, but and
then you know, really on the you know, we left
one on the field on that on the twelve men
(48:36):
because the official properly held it. They subbed, and then
they tried to sub late and he walked away from it.
But there was to our players defense, there was so
much confusion in front of him. The cutter was ready
to go and snapped and clapped for it, but they
(48:57):
weren't all ready to go. We didn't snap it. Had
we snapped it before the receiver was gone, So we actually,
I don't want to get in all that. Maybe people
maybe missed that, but but we we really had a
free five there.
Speaker 2 (49:10):
Yeah, I see what you mean.
Speaker 12 (49:12):
But the confusion led to the center and this old
line not being ready to go because there's people walking
around right in front. But the official walked away from it.
So we had a free five there and instead we
get the procedure.
Speaker 2 (49:25):
On the subject of tempo Tennessee is uh, that's a
huge part of what they've done under coach Hypel. Are
they doing it to these great a degree this year?
Speaker 12 (49:36):
Yes, they are super fast, super fast.
Speaker 2 (49:39):
Yeah, that has to going up against that particular challenge
in the radio which they're scoring. Is a good time
for your defense too, Yeah, have it's most styled in
game the week before they.
Speaker 11 (49:48):
Score, like I don't have it right in front of me.
I had at the office.
Speaker 12 (49:51):
But I mean they score like, you know, something ridiculous
like one point nine or one point nine points per
minute or something like that.
Speaker 11 (49:59):
I mean it's something crazy, you know. So yeah, they
go very fast.
Speaker 2 (50:05):
Yeah, we're going to get to break one segment left.

I wanted to go back to another One of the
young guys lost this and didn't get back to it. Earlier.
(53:52):
Jacob Coway had missed one down at Georgia and then
he misses one long one at the end of the
half fifty three yards. You know, young guys, things can
get in their heads. He bounces back, kicks the next one,
and then you have to count on him to tie
the game.
Speaker 12 (54:06):
And super proud of him, absolutely, very much so. And
you know that's that's touchy when you get things in
your head like that. And the wind was not easy
on Saturday. He's a young guy, and you know, to
step in there and hit that was super important, you know.
And and you know, also Tom the Georgia miss was
(54:28):
a two minute drill. His only two misses of the
year were two minute drills, and so and so the
two minute drill to put the game in overtime, you know,
he nails it. So got that monkey off his back,
and you know, really good to see. And you know,
never more pressure on him than right there.
Speaker 2 (54:45):
Oh my goodness. Now a little bit more with the
Tennessee what in particular impresses you about the QB.
Speaker 12 (54:52):
Very very good player, you know, making very quick decisions,
very strong arm, throws it in good locations and so
super impressed with the way he's playing. Yeah, they're you know,
I said it in my press conference today, and you know,
I stand by it, you know, and they've been elite,
you know, offensively for some time. We all know that
(55:13):
Josh Eipel's always had a great quarterbacks and receivers and
you know, very good teams in general. And you know,
I feel like they're throwing it and operating at a
higher clip than we've ever defended them.
Speaker 11 (55:25):
So that's saying a lot.
Speaker 12 (55:26):
I mean they're throwing it for three eleven and rushing
it for two hundred, so very very good. And also
I think, you know, without question, it's the best offensive
line we played all year.
Speaker 2 (55:36):
Tony handed us some numbers. On the offense. You had
seventy seven total touches in that game. There were forty
six rushes, thirty one catches. It's the most in a
game for the cat since twenty twenty one. And on
the catches side, you mentioned to Cutter spreading it around.
I think there were it was a twelve different guys.
I think that was the number of the different guys
that caught passes on Saturday.
Speaker 12 (55:58):
Yeah, I mean, whatever you say on that, but I
know it was a bunch. But you know, I think, uh,
what you know, I I'd say this a lot and
I understand it. But like when somebody asked me, why
is you know, he not carrying the ball enough, or
why is so and so not getting enough touches? And
you know to that point, you know what Tony just
gave us that you know, if you have seventy seven touches,
(56:20):
then you're gonna you're gonna get the ball.
Speaker 11 (56:22):
You're gonna spread it out better.
Speaker 12 (56:23):
And you know that comes again with getting back to
you know, moving the chains, getting first downs, you know,
run some play and all. That's great, but we we
know I haven't lost sight of the fact you've got
to get the ball across the goal line. So don't
you know, before anybody wants to, you know, say you've
been talking a lot about that.
Speaker 11 (56:41):
I get it. I get it.
Speaker 12 (56:42):
We got to get the ball across the goal line.
And we're working hard. I could promise you that to
score some points.
Speaker 2 (56:48):
Well on that front, about forty seconds here, we've talked
so bunch about Tennessee's offense. What about their defense?
Speaker 12 (56:53):
Defense? I touched on it. You know, I think upfront
starts up front very super disruptive. They lead the sec
and sack. You know, they have a ton of tackles
for loss and so very disruptive upfront, probably have one
of the best you know players in the SEC and
their linebacker number seven, and uh you know their back
end is playing at a very high level as well.
So very good team. But you know, it's about like always,
(57:17):
I mean, we got to concentrate on ourselves and continue
to build and improve on the good things that we've done.
As I just mentioned, Yeah, we got to score you know,
some more points and certainly against this great Tennessee offense,
we're gonna have to find.
Speaker 11 (57:29):
Some ways to get in the end zone.
Speaker 2 (57:30):
Mark, Thank you much.
Speaker 11 (57:31):
Okay, thank you to.
Speaker 2 (57:32):
