Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, haven't a view from the rafters. This is just
my turn to say jokes.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
So I scrambled like you with your note cards here.
Speaker 1 (00:05):
I'm new at this. Your mother top candidates for a
six minut of the Year award? Why do you think
you deserve it more than our fans.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
If our fans could be a part of the race,
they would win it.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Yeah, I've got a little cheese board for you here.
Speaker 4 (00:17):
Well, I really appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Brady or Rogers. I hate you for this, Luke.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
This was solid until you brought that out.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
You like Lily coaching at Butler coaching for Boston. Now, President,
why do you find it so hard to hold onto
a job?
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Would you really write these?
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Oh? Well, Chucks, this is the best interview I could
possibly imagine.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
There's no media person in the world that would say that.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Well, it sounds like there's an opening in the market. Blake, Yeah,
so Blake wasn't available, All right, good afternoon. Alan Iverson
once said, I don't know any franchise players that come
off the bench. I don't know any Olympian that comes
off the bench. I don't know any All Star that
comes off the bench. I don't know any former MVP
that comes off the bench. I don't know any three
(00:56):
time scoring champ that comes off the bench. I don't
know any first team all ONBA that comes off the bench.
I don't either, but I do know a good friend
Malcolm Brogden along the show.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Thank you for having me.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
Yeah, that's great to have you. We're really excited. This
is a view from the rafters. I'm Luke Cornett. I'm
taking out of this is the first time we're doing it.
Probably lasts as well, but all right, So Malcolm, you're
among the top candidates.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Boy, I love you.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Oh knnesscurty, you're a mother top candidates for six Minute
of the Year Award. Why do you think you deserve
it more than our fans.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
If our fans could be a part of the race,
they would win it.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
You could try to like offer your votes for them,
possibly and just come in.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
That's not legal, It's not it's not possible. It's not possible.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Is thankfulness a pillar?
Speaker 2 (01:52):
I don't know?
Speaker 1 (01:54):
All right, So the other week you spent some time
at the I Nations discussing clean uhould like to talk
about your work there at all?
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yeah? I have a foundation that focuses on clean water.
We built clean water wells in East Africa, Tanzania. I
went to the UN to speak about that's awesome.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Yeah, I was just saying about it, like, how about
you spend just like a little bit less time at
the UN and a little bit more time with the US.
We missed a question. I think you're you're down for
quite a while. It's felt like.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
You're only a day, only a day.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
The days are long. Oh so obviously, you know from
your time with Virginia and on, you've had the nickname
as the President's dude or the President due to your
striking resemblance to number forty four President Barack Obama. You
know your voice, your luck, all the stuff. I'm sure
you're familiar with this, are you? Are you familiar with that?
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Yeah? All right.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Well, also, you've been pretty politant or politically active, and
I was just wondering if you might have a future
campaign on your own. I actually pulled teammates out to see,
like what question they'd want me to ask you concerning
your future campaign. And there's really just one thing that
came around resoundingly, like every single person on the team
(03:17):
was primarily concerned with this. So if you could you know,
answer from your not your delegates, so constituents. Uh, they
appreciate that. So the one question I got from the
team was unanimous, What would you do to decrease tax
rates for high income earners?
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Who? What teammates? Did you ask?
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Everybody? Literally? Everybody not me? They were concerned the inflation
is a big problem. So they're you don't have any plans.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
I don't have an answer.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
You don't have any plans for that.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
I didn't say I was over running. People say I
should run. I've never said that.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
So okay, well, you know I'm not obligated to answer that.
So I think you should be a little more glass
half full on that one. I think you can do it.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Okay, I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
There you go, Malcolm Brogden running for president twenty How
do you have to be thirty five? So you could
have done it like forty years ago? Is that right?
There you go. The joke there is that he's old
because he spent all his time in college. All right,
well here's another one. Uh So Malcolm, you graduated from
(04:30):
Virginia a bachelor's degree in history, impressive, and a master's
in public policy?
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Am I correct?
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Thanks? Wikipedia from the prescigious Baton School of Leadership in
Public Policy. You think you're better than me. I don't
like that one. That is you're gonna just scare that one.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
That's horrible.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Yeah, that one was bad. That one. That one didn't
really have anything to it. So you're just trying to
get content, you know. It's what it's all about, just
selling our souls. Here we go, Oh, there you go.
In preparation for this interview, I read Intangible, the story
about Virginia Basketball's rise, you know, during the Coach Bennett
a era. You read that, I actually did. Sam gave
(05:15):
it to me. Sam read it, and then he gave
it to me, and I actually read it. Believe or not.
We sit next to each other on the plane. I
would not read it next to you because I was
embarrassed and I was like, I'm gonna have to wait
till I get It'd be like reading and like your
(05:36):
present throughout quite a lot of it. Anyways. Well, so
in the book, several stories of your incredible work ethic
were well documented, Like over and over, Pe was talking
about how hard you worked and now having been around
you for I mean, it was a four year full
regular season. I just want to ask what happened?
Speaker 3 (06:00):
What do you mean? In what contexts are you asking?
Speaker 1 (06:02):
I'm saying because a lot of people were talking about
you having this incredible work ethic. Now I see you around.
I mean you're hardly present when you are. You're like
I don't see on the training table, I don't see
in the weight room. I'll see you on the court
getting your shots. Seen. Well, I show up at the
start of practice and I'm out first thing, So I
(06:22):
don't really see you doing any of those things. I
just see you at practice and that's all I see.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
So if you're not showing up before or.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Saying at me, I'm interviewing you, Malcolm, the questions are,
that's a one way street here.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
That's fair. I'm showing up, I am getting my work.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
Okay, Well, I'll have to take your word for it. Uh. So,
you know, you had a very distinguished collegiate basketball career
at Virginia, and it's well documented, awards and all this
kind of stuff. You know, and you played for the
legendary national champion I imagine future Hall of Famer Tony
Bennett coach Seanny Bennett. I don't know if you remember this,
(07:00):
but your senior year. In my junior year, we scrimmaged
each other at Vanderbilt. I probably remember you more than
you remember me.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Is that fair to say I remember you?
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Oh? Wow? Chucks? Uh well yeah, I was just wondering
concerning that scrimmage. Any thing, h like the coach Bennett
say anything about me?
Speaker 3 (07:21):
No? Actually, not a word, not a word. I know
you think you're a Virginia guy. You're not?
Speaker 1 (07:30):
Well, who if I get a grad degree from there?
Am I a Virginia guy?
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Who? I'm a double? Who?
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Because I got you're a double who?
Speaker 3 (07:39):
You're a who?
Speaker 1 (07:42):
People? You have two degrees?
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Who? Who? No? A double hooo? Okay yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
So all right, well maybe one day I'll meet him?
All right, all right, so now it's time to this
is what we all came here for. And you know,
so it's been well documented for Malcolm throughout this year.
He's a top candidate for a very prescigious NBA Regular
Season award. I mean it's there's no surpi Like people
(08:14):
have been talking about it all year, and I bet
you're wondering. I was like, why we're so adamant about
having you on and like, and I didn't really want
to do it, but it was like, no, we need
to get here, and we need to get am here.
We get here. Well, I really can't believe that like
the powers that be allowed like this to be the
time and place for it, but it's how they decided
to go. So it is without much further ado, that
(08:38):
I would like to award you, Malcolm Brogden with the
two twenty twenty three Boston Celtics Training Room Trivia third
Place Award. So here's the award, third place Award. We
(08:58):
do pregame trivia every day and on the road games
with ninety minutes on the clock, and Malcolm this year
bowed through thick and thin no matter what happened. I say,
he showed up every single day and he really gave
his best. And yeah, third place is something really to
be proud of. It's signed by the you know, the
leader Paul West of the the Trivia Commission, and I
(09:21):
just wanted to award that for you. And it also
comes with a little bag of Monster trail mix. I
made a stop at Target the other day. Malcolm is
a very disciplined eater, but we've shared a bond about
uh secretly gorging on Monster trail mix because it feels
like trail mix, which is a good snack, but frankly,
it's it's dessert. So he's your your ward.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
I'm not taking I'm not taking the award. You cheated.
You cheated the.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
Blood money, you cheated. No listen, you don't take the award.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
No listen, you cheated all year long to get that.
It's not cheating to get the first because you're are
you first? What are you first?
Speaker 1 (09:59):
A I I haven't checked the I just was here.
If you present this for you, I mean I was
winning for most of the year, and so unless something
happened in the last game, I remember, I'm about taking it off.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
I'm not taking third place. I'm not taking it.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
That's that's not very gracious of you. That's a pillow
a gratitude. Well I gotta see it. Maybe i'll frame
it and then it'll be a little more sure to
do it.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
I was.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
I didn't cheat, but that's neither in there. I played
by the rules of the game. You guys did not
like it, but the results to be for themselves. So yeah,
that's about it. You know, a lot of fun we
had here, Malcolm Brogden. You know, I gotta say it's
a pleasure having you on. You're the very first guest
(10:51):
a day that will forever go down and infamy. Well
that's probably not it. It's tryly not if I want
to land in with that. That's not great. Yeah, thanks
for having me on. And I'm sorry that you didn't
want to accept your prestigious award, but well, hanging on
to it for you.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
The interview this was solid until you brought that out.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
Oh what are you talking about? You did really good.
Third is really good and there's like five competitors, so
third of five is like middle of the pack. I
think third of five if you if you had a
full team for five people, I think there'd be two starters.
So technically you'd be the sixth man of the tricky.
Thanks Malcolm, the pleasure to have you on. Love you.
(11:37):
So before we began, we have a little sponsor. This
interview is brought to you by No Shovel Club. Tired
of shoving your driveway after March First, You're not Alone?
Found about Dave Hawser, who was tired of long winters,
of removing snow and the bitter Wisconsin cold. The No
Shovel Club is Central Wisconsin's fastest growing time restricted snow
(11:57):
removal fraternal organization, with seven one hundred members and growing.
Registration for the twenty three twenty four winner is now
open on Facebook. Sam Howser, Welcome to the show. How
you doing, man, I'm glad to be here. I'm great
are you? Are you a No Shovel Club member? Oh?
Speaker 4 (12:12):
I am a diehard No Shovel Club.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Member, or advertise will be happy to hear that.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Yep, haven't shoveld since ninety seven.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
So yep, wow, proud. I'm sure your dad's just beaming.
He is seeing his sun. Just drive through heavy snow.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Yep, nothing like it.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
That's what they say. They say, that's Sam. He drives
through heavy snow. That's what they say about him. All right,
So before we begin, Yeah, I've got a little cheeseboard
for you here. In classic Wisconsin fashion, it's it's a
big polite thing to do. Every time you go to
a visitor's house, you have to bring a cheeseboard. So, yeah,
I just wanted to have this for you. We're gonna
we're gonna do a little blind cheese tasting. Yeah. As
(12:50):
the question to go on.
Speaker 4 (12:50):
I would love to.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
They say the NBA is a copycat league, and there's
a certain podcast that has a similar kind of food
related bit, and I was like, well, I needed to
make this more core to my guests. And so we've
got the cheese.
Speaker 4 (13:04):
Well I really appreciate it that away from home.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
Yeah, no, we can go ahead and start here out.
You close your eyes if you can. Yeah, all handed,
all handed.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
To the cheese.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
I can't.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
Oh, we got a cracker with the two.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
Yeah, there's a little it's a little almond flour cracker too.
So trying to watch out for the playoffic.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
Mmm, that's some good cheese there. Who was that target.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Went last night?
Speaker 4 (13:33):
It was like nine o'clock and I'm like, tastes like Swiss.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Oh I'm sorry, I'm kidding. It's Kobe Jack. Okay, yeah,
good for him. Pepper Jack. No, it doesn't really matter,
is that one does that one? I don't even know
which ones the cheeses are. Okay, So we actually did
the pepper Jack. It was very mild though there. You
didn't really get any I didn't either. It was kind
of disappointing. It's not exactly known for the cheese. It's
(14:00):
that's all right, all right. So, Sam Hauser, So is
your first real, like full season in the NBA last
year spending time in Maine and stuff, and believe it
or not, Samuel Hawser, Samuel David Art truly right here.
He led the NBA in defensive rating, and also at
a point near the very end of the season, he
was leading the league and percentage of defensive possessions that
(14:23):
he was isolated against, meaning teams keep trying to get
him in the action although you lead the NBA in
defensive rating, and so I'm just wondering, is there any
possible reason why you think teams would continue to do
this despite the evidence that states otherwise.
Speaker 5 (14:41):
Yeah, you know, I think it might just be my
experience in the.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
League, experiencing the league that you're kind of younger.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
Yeah, I think that.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
Might be it. Yeah, that's what you think it is.
I have no idea you're talking about there, yep. So yeah,
we can we can know. So we don't really matter.
You can have some if you want. Feel free to
break oh love a good cheddar. I know it's not
like Wisconsin Wisconsin cheese, but I did my best that
I could. It was after a bad time. That'll make
(15:12):
something happen. All right, So we got a new little
segment here. If there's one thing that people in this
team and organization knows Samuel for, what is it that
they always say about you, sam They always say this
about you. They say that Samuel Hawser, he it's from Wisconsin. No,
that it's just that. Oh, he's that Samuel Hawser. He's
(15:34):
the Frank calli Endo of the NBA because he's got
elite impressions. So so we're gonna go We're gonna do
a couple of impressions here. Here. I'm gonna hand you
the line. Okay, First I'm gonna introduce the character, and
then I'm gonna hand him the line please do. Uh.
So this would be Ryan Gossling's dad from the two
thousand blockbuster film Remember the Titans, after his son is
(15:57):
subbed out. So wait, once again, this would be Ryan
Gossling's dad from the two thousand blockbuster Remember the Titans
after his son was subbed out. Yep, Okay, here's a line. Yep,
that's the alright, that's the first one second one we'll
(16:21):
see if you're willing. Uh, It's it's one of two people.
It's either our Australian performance coaches Jay Slaney or and
or physical therapist Steve mat I've got a line for
you if you, uh, if you want to give that
one a shot, I might give it a shot after
you as well. Oi.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
I mean thinks you should put some oist on that
you should, you should.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Get into it a little bit more usually when they talk.
This is how that's fun fact about Australia is it's
basically like Cockney English. And I mean, at least in
my mind. I'm just taking this from Kingsman, That's where
I'm stealing this from and Peggy Blinders apparently show. But
I don't really know, because I think it's a little
(17:05):
bit more. It's a little bit more subtle, a little
more subtle. So I'm like, hmm, oh, I I mean
thinks he's put some etes on that you should.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
It's soressive.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
All right, Oh, here we go, last one of the impressions.
I'm getting warm. All right, Sam, you just read the
below sentence. This one was actually at the request of
a certain teammate who will remain nameless. Yeah, not even
a character. We just wanted to read that sentence all right,
(17:48):
the talent.
Speaker 5 (17:52):
I hate you for this, Luke, the talented baggage man
balanced and flagged my jaguar bag.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
Wow, can I do.
Speaker 4 (18:01):
You want me to do it again?
Speaker 1 (18:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (18:03):
I talented baggage man balanced and flagged my jaguarre bag.
Speaker 1 (18:07):
That's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
Bring out the Midwest.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
Yeah, the talented baggage man balanced and flagged my Jaguar bag.
Something that sounds sounds right?
Speaker 4 (18:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (18:17):
I guess that one wasn't even impression. I was just asking,
sound like yeah, yeah, yeah. So Sam, you know you've
been here in Boston the second year. You've become a
bit of a fan favorite. If I do say so myself,
The fans really take to you. It seems that like
you're in a place that seems like you love. They
love having you here. I mean, I would you hope
(18:40):
to be here for a long time? Like I would
you agree with that? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (18:42):
I can agree with that.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Yeah, No, I think that'd be great. And I do guess,
like you know, all good things must come to an end.
So Brady or Rogers.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
Rogers, that's right, and that's it.
Speaker 1 (18:55):
That's all I got. It was nice having him, wasn't it. Sorry?
Speaker 4 (18:59):
Sorry, release, Yes.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
You guys think I'm crazy. Here we go, Farver Brady.
Oh yeah, no, here we go, Jordan love or Braidy Oh.
Speaker 5 (19:11):
Jordan love baby. The future is so bright in Green Bay.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
For during nine months out of the year.
Speaker 5 (19:18):
It's actually really actually gets stark really early in the winter.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
So al right, here we go. Uh. I don't know
a lot of he knows, but our Samuel is actually
sounds very condescending to say it that way. He's recently
engaged and he's playing getting married this summer. Congratulations sam Yeah,
thank you. Awesome. Yeah, thanks guys, Yeah, appreciate. Uh. So
(19:42):
I'd like to dedicate this last segment to the absolute
best part of being engaged. And so this segment, I'm
just gonna uh welcome to unsolicited marriage advice with Luke Cornette.
It is all you're gonna get for the next like
five months. Right here we go. So this is the
first one. I want to hear what you think about this.
(20:03):
So there's some good advice for you. Marriage isn't a contest,
so never keep score.
Speaker 4 (20:09):
Said the loser, right, I can I can take that.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
I won't. I won't say the score.
Speaker 4 (20:18):
I can take that with me.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
I won't say the score of my own. But like,
let's just say, it looks like me and you are
playing the whole fourth quarter, you know what I'm saying. Yeah, okay,
h hm, this is just my turn to say jokes.
So I don't even I'm not even sure while you're here.
(20:43):
A good marriage is one where each partner secretly suspects
they got the better deal. Well, I only had to
pay my father in law two goats for my wife,
so I'd say I got a steal.
Speaker 4 (21:00):
To your father in law.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
No, that's like so I used to be a thing
of like dowries, you know. And uh yeah, hopefully he
doesn't say this.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
I'm sending it to him, you know.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
So we had the cheeses. Uh, well, we have one
more last quote? Should we go to do the last gold? Guys?
And we can cut it? This one's my This one's
pretty weak, but well all right, so fun Weaver. Are
you familiar with fun Fun Fun Weaver? Yeah, well, apparently
if you google marriage quotes, her name will pop up.
That's why I because she's pretty famous for that, I guess. So.
(21:34):
She once said marriage is like watching the color of
leaves in the fall, ever changing and more stunningly beautiful
with each passing day. Oh, I'm sorry I missed the
last part of the quote, followed by months and months
of bit winter, cold and darkness.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
A lot to look forward, Yeah, a lot to look
forward to.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
I hope everyone knows it's a joke. I like to
say to my family, those joke. I love you guys,
and uh, a fair part of my life. Yeah, that's
about it. We we didn't really ended up working through
all the cheeses, but Sam, Samuel, would you like dessert?
Speaker 5 (22:14):
I would love dessert because conversations are deserting, the conversations
are dessert.
Speaker 1 (22:20):
There we go. That's I'm so proud. That's I wanted you.
And then he did. You actually kind of set me
up for and I was devastated. And then you brought
me back, just like a father of wishing to see
his son.
Speaker 4 (22:32):
Success when he gets the moped.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
Yeah, there you go. Kind of redeemed himself. You did
redeem yourself. Well, everyone, Uh say thank you to Sam Hauser,
our wonderful guest on View from the rafters. Uh Luke
Cornett takeover. I guess first and only probably last. It
was a pleasure, Yeah, pleasures all our Yeah, loving to
view from the rafters. Were absolutely privileged to have us
our guest today, the man at the helm, Brad Stevens.
(22:57):
We actually had the other presidents sitting in your seat
or Malcolm, but Malcolm, yeah, thank you for coming on. Yeah,
I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
It's good to be here. I thought we were already
done after we were already started talking prior to Yeah, No,
I have official announcement.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
I'm new at this. It's the first year time thing,
kinda am I right? Yes, yeah, we're both second from me. Yeah,
catcha step ahead, all right. So moves you made in
your first calendar year as executive training for such pivotal
players as Derek White, Malcolm Brogden, return of Al Horford,
as well as signing diamond in the rough undrafted rotation
(23:32):
piece Sam Hauser, Just how do you do it?
Speaker 2 (23:36):
This feels like this. I thought this was going to
be a lot more creative than talking hoops and roster. No,
you know what it's You know these guys, You're around
these guys every day. They are all really good people
who know how to impact winning from the roles that
(23:56):
they're in. Some you know, Sam is learning and growing
into his role in the NBA, and and from the
get go looked like he was going to be able
to to do that. And then the other three guys
are just really proven. But as you know, the best
teammates and guys that are willing to give of themselves
(24:16):
for the team, and you know, every every good team
needs that.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
I agree. Would you agree with that? I would agree,
you know. Yeah. So also, you led the team to
the finals in your very first year in the front office.
Is there anything you can't do? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Yeah, well I never got there as a coach, and
then I certainly wouldn't have gotten there as a player.
So yeah, there's a lot that I can't do. It
was better, it's it's so my So I think lead
the team was a little strong.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
There, not to us, not to us whatever.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
Yeah, I think that the players and coaching staff are
responsible for all that stuff. I just try to stay
out of the way, you know. I want to make
sure the gum selection down by the practice court is good.
I want to make sure that, you know, I stay
out of the way. During the game, I'm up in
the suite way away from everybody. I never make a
bad face. I'm always positive, and you know, I just
(25:19):
try to stay out of your way.
Speaker 1 (25:20):
I'm sorry. I don't think I'm going to keep going
with the questions that they gave us because I just
don't feel like it's very authentic for me. If that's
all right, all right, do whatever? You all right, Bradley,
welcome to the hot seat. Yeah something you're all too
familiar with them?
Speaker 2 (25:36):
All right, that's right.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
There you go. So you've obviously moved into a different role.
But as you're going on day by day, like, do
you ever just you know, get that itch to get
back out there and give it another shot?
Speaker 2 (25:51):
I do, well, I don't know about it. I missed
teaching and I sometimes miss the you know, I guess
the chess moments of the game.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
I was.
Speaker 1 (26:05):
I was actually talking about your your nine to five
at Eli Lilly.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Yes, there you go. So no, do I miss that?
Speaker 1 (26:13):
No?
Speaker 2 (26:13):
I don't miss that. But you know, there was some
really exhilarating moments as a twenty two year old working
on marketing plans. That sounds, you know, at a desk
thrilling to the garden, isn't it? And yeah, now I
wear sweats and shorts and yeah, pretty much every day
now that they've made coaching casual come back and.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
A little bit.
Speaker 2 (26:37):
I've really never Yeah, I've really never gotten into the
suits like some other executives do. I don't really look
at myself that way.
Speaker 1 (26:44):
Yeah, that's a I wore a belt to the interview.
You could have that's pretty reciprocated. Awesome, Yeah, I don't
have one. On So, how do you respond to those
who note coach Bobby Knight as a significant coaching influence
given your uncanny sideline manner like looking in the mirror?
Speaker 2 (27:01):
No, so you mean you say that he was a
significant influence because.
Speaker 1 (27:05):
He Because when I when I first came here and
I was playing for you, I felt like I was
in like the eighties Hoosiers. Yeah that's yeah, like you
pacing up and down the side. It just seemed like, So,
so I have coach Knight. When I was growing up
in Indiana. First of all, that was a huge reason
why I loved basketball.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
Was were those Indiana teams and Coach Knight. When I
was eight years old, my dad played football at IU
and when I was eight years old, I was sitting
twenty rows up when he threw the chair.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
Oh wow, and so well disappointed. You never pulled that
one out.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
Yeah, well, you know of I never got on a film, yeah,
but got a chance to watch all those teams coached
against him my first year as a head coach when
he was at Texas Tech in the Great Alaska, and
then introduced him when he spoke at Butler when I
was still coaching there, and he told me right before
he said, keep this introduction short. So I scrambled, like
(28:01):
you with your note cards here, I scrambled. I tried
to introduce him in a succinct, decise way, and before
I got done, I felt this big paw hit my
shoulder and I just said, coaching night, everybody. Yeah, yeah,
I knew, I knew what my role was.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
I don't think I would I don't.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
Yeah, that's right. I don't think I would have been
as good playing for him as I enjoyed rooting for him.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
Though, don't kind yourself short. Yeah, you know, you never
know what you might be capable of. Although athleticism is
generally like a pretty genetically set.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
I think that that would have I've talked about it
even probably maybe get through practice. I think I would
have been I think I would have been the worst
athlete ever to play there. Which would be something maybe Yeah. Yeah,
well I'd like to think not that's just me though
personally Eli Lilly coaching at Butler Coaching for Boston, not president.
(29:03):
Why do you find it so hard to hold on
to a job? Yeah, yeah, no, that's one of the
one of the challenges is is I think people get
sick after of me after a certain amount of time,
So the clock is ticking again, and so I'm just
always on my toes. Yeah, like the Lily one was fast.
(29:23):
It was like, you know, I've tried to tell the
story that I had this passion for coaching, but yeah,
they probably wanted to get rid of me. Within a year,
I realized they had made a mistake in hiring. And
you know, this young guy doesn't know all that he
thinks he knows and isn't really helping us beat Pfizer
in the pharmaceutical market. So let's get rid of him
and send him to be a coach because yeah, you know,
he played a little bit yeah yeah, pushing a level.
(29:46):
But yeah, so you just kind of you gotta stand
your toes.
Speaker 1 (29:50):
Yeah. I don't know if you're familiar with how like
all this type stuff works, but we're gonna need you
to do a little bit of promo reads, just like
you know, algorithms getting clicked, just general, adding a little
interest in social media.
Speaker 2 (30:01):
In these promo res. If you could just after watching
all your after watching all your jumbo tron antics, that's
one thing I do get to do.
Speaker 1 (30:11):
You get to watch the jumbotrons during the game.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
I do. I get to watch JumboTron and like, you know,
I can have a thing of popcorn, you know, I
can like, yeah, I have a piece of pizza in
the middle of the game.
Speaker 1 (30:22):
It's kind of nice. Yeah. I was going to bring
up you against Golden State, telling me you're a better
pick and roll defender than this, and it ripped me
to my core.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
But I was not going to bring that one up
when I was coaching you.
Speaker 1 (30:34):
Yeah. Yeah, they ran a little like handoff thing Jordan Poole.
I think it came off hit a three and he
might have gotten down it was here, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
Connell Anderson went over the over the scores table, yeah yeah,
and Curry was going he was usual.
Speaker 1 (30:51):
Where was that that was Curry that year who like
he fell and hit his like tailbone or something? Was
that somebody else? Or was that it was also that
was all in the bubble year.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
So I told you I told you in that game
what because I don't remember.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
It very I think you said if they scored twice,
and you just said you're a better pick and roll
defender than this, And I was just like, yeah, Usually
I'm used to just getting berated verbally and like with
just surface type things, but then to just say something
actually real that you have to like accept and in
the moment, yeah, no, I was like, don't want to
face that. Yep, that's right.
Speaker 2 (31:26):
Is he trying to play mind games with me?
Speaker 1 (31:29):
Trying to tell me?
Speaker 2 (31:30):
Is he trying to tell me something.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
I've been so used to having to read behind like
between the lines on comments. Yeah, I think you could
read this promo though, I think this one's a little safer.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
What's the secret to running a successful NBA franchise? The
answer might surprise you. Next on View from.
Speaker 1 (31:50):
The Rafters, Can I can I take a guess? I
don't know.
Speaker 2 (31:53):
I tell you my second year you should ask Zaron.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
My guess said it was have had any ans draft
franchise altering talent?
Speaker 2 (32:02):
No question?
Speaker 1 (32:03):
Okay, I feel like that.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Was also it was also the key to being good
again very quickly was the fact that he had those
Brooklyn picks and we just got to, you know, quickly
turned from building to good. Yeah, we weren't we weren't great,
but we were good and then we built up and
hopefully we're in the mix.
Speaker 1 (32:22):
We'll see.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
But yeah, that that kind of helps.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
Yeah, I would say so. Yeah, at least in my
personal experience, having good players generally help.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
I'm trying to think of the top ten draft picks.
Have we had more that we've had Smart at six
and Jason and Jyaln at three?
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Yeah, Sam Howser sixty one?
Speaker 2 (32:41):
Was he sixty one?
Speaker 1 (32:41):
He was sixty one?
Speaker 2 (32:43):
Yes, he was. Yeah, that's an interesting one. Or however
many two ways signed that night could be anywhere.
Speaker 1 (32:50):
Because seventy four Yeah, yeah, I like to think sixty
one sixty one does. Yeah, that's what we say.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
What is if? Yeah, what's the what do they call
the last pick in the draft?
Speaker 1 (33:03):
Mister irrelevant? But I say mister incredibly.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
In the draft?
Speaker 1 (33:07):
Probably ever, Yeah, yeah, he was amazing. I play with
them in the little USA basketball thing that was he
can score the.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
Basketball in his sleep. He's amazing.
Speaker 1 (33:18):
It's amazing.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
What what other great Like, what do they call these
promo reads? These aren't really promo reads. These are teasers, right, teasers? Yeah,
they're not.
Speaker 1 (33:28):
I'm sorry, I'm new to the business. Well, yeah, my
mom would be ashamed to get your media stuff straight. Yeah,
I'll try.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
Yeah, my mom would be ashamed.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
I'm gonna learn, trust me. I already know that. Yeah.
All right, So now we actually have some some questions
from the fans from the from the last We've got
questions in the live stream, So I'm just gonna I'm
gonna pull I have we printed them and immediately sent
them to me via paper, and I give you my
(33:56):
teasers back. Yeah, just put them there. You might want
to save them. Uh oh, So here's one. Uh wow,
I just really liked that Cornet kid. He just seems
to be great for the team. Oh, I'm sorry. Yeah,
that one's That one's not even really a question.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
Was that was just the Yeah? No, I think that one.
You should probably talk to Joe about that. Yeah, that
one's probably not directed for me too, I think. But
but I like the you know, but the eclipse was
obviously foiled.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
I'll tell you that.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
Ironically, it had its moment. It had had its moment.
Now when people start shot faking it and driving it
through the chest, it's a little bit less effective.
Speaker 1 (34:35):
I'm thinking I just punched the guy when well.
Speaker 2 (34:37):
One of the things that one of the things that's
good it's is if you're not the highest, yeah you
land quicker, then you can get back in front.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
That's the keys.
Speaker 2 (34:46):
Not everybody can jump on a shot face. That's why
I can't jump.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
See when Rob does it, you can't drive and then
drive back out and drive and it doesn't come down right.
So you know, all right, we got we got another
one from the audience.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
Here, the same general topic.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
I'm reading it live. So how am I going to know?
What good question is? How am I going to get
it off Twitter? Predetermined questions that'd be weird? Uh? Yes,
this is uh actee I uh yeah, I absolutely agree
with that last guy. Are we gonna have the cap
space to keep that cornet around? Just what they're saying,
what the people are saying.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
It feels like it feels like it's these are all
in the ask Zaren Bucket.
Speaker 1 (35:28):
Hmm okay, well I thought you know, top Dog, might
you know have some say so? Uh? We have every
have time from one last question. Okay, that's fine.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
Yeah, this is the questions that really well thought of
by you and the live stream.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
By the live stream, I'm just reading. I'm just the
I'm just the intermediate.
Speaker 2 (35:49):
Did you did you really write these or did somebody
else do that? Did you put your like mental energy
into it?
Speaker 1 (35:55):
Or was this because I've had I've had a note
SAP for a couple of weeks and I've been fantastic. No,
but these are not all the other stuff. Once again,
these are live questions from the audience.
Speaker 2 (36:07):
Let me ask, can I ask one more question?
Speaker 1 (36:08):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Who would be you had Malcolm on Who's a great interview?
Who else did you have on Sam? Sam number sixty one? Yep,
mister sixty one? And like, who would be your favorite
interview on the team?
Speaker 1 (36:22):
You know, I this is just something I was I
was born up raised with. I like to just be
where next. I like to be a review from the rafters.
I like to be where my feet are. And so
I would say that this is the best interview I
could possibly imagine. I'm just there's living in the moment.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
So this is what you just talked about. How much
more you have to learn about the media. There's no
media person in the world that.
Speaker 1 (36:43):
Would say that, well, it sounds like there's an opening
in the market. Huh, yeah, no I would or you know,
like I did pull out with Malcolm like the like,
oh we couldn't get Blake. Yes, so you really meant
because that's how you insult your friends. We have one
last question, if that's all right, if we have the time,
plenty of time, Yeah, all right, I just ram submitted. Yeah,
(37:06):
that Corneck kid pulled over and helped me change a
flat on Stora the other day. I heard he has
an incredible wife and two beautiful children too. It would
just be a travesty for the city of Boston to
let that courageous and dare I say, incredibly handsome fellow go, well,
that's just my two cents. Have a great day. Yeah,
it doesn't really seem that there is a question in
that one.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
Do you really know how to change a tire?
Speaker 1 (37:27):
I do know how to change a tire? Have you
ever done it? I've done it twice, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (37:31):
To help someone else. I have not, so they must
have seen the other side. I think guy walking around
that changes tires.
Speaker 1 (37:39):
Oh well, other than this guy, you're saying, yeah, no,
I only do it in really congested areas of cities.
That's I thought you're talking about asking like remotely, because
that's you know, it's dangerous out there, and so you
want to do it. Yeah, this is on the way
to the game the other day, because you know, I'm
always just you know, one of the first guys at
the gym. So I was like, I have plenty of time.
I'm gonna come over and I'm gonna stop and help
there that staff game. That's pick up. Yeah, that is uh,
(38:02):
it really is. Yeah. Unfortunately, really didn't get to anything else.
Speaker 2 (38:08):
Live stream questions were not questions.
Speaker 1 (38:10):
Yeah, I know, I think we could work on a
little next time of making sure that people were actually
submitting questions because it was a lot more like comments.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
It was a lot of comments, and it was really
just one subject.
Speaker 1 (38:21):
Yeah, subjects Apparently I have my earpiece, I have my editor,
and he was saying that pretty much like all of
them were that. So he decided to kind of filter
down to what you catch. That's how it goes. I guess. Yeah,
well no, it was. It was great to have you on.
Thank you, Thank you, Brad. Yeah, any last words, Uh
you know.
Speaker 2 (38:39):
It was great to be on. I appreciate you taking
the time and keeping in notes.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
Yeah, I'm not proud of it, but I thought it
was I thought it was really well thought of.
Speaker 2 (38:48):
I bet the Malcolm and Sam pieces are better.
Speaker 1 (38:50):
But you say that. Yeah, we had a great time.
Appreciate l Corn, you from the Rappers, Brad Stevens, thanks
for having us
