En 1980, les Glatzel, une famille modeste du Connecticut se trouve plongée dans un infernal chaos. Non seulement leur résidence est-elle le théâtre de manifestations surnaturelles, mais l'un des enfants, David, un garçon de 11 ans, est victime d'une entité diabolique. Pour les parents, il ne fait aucun doute : David est possédé. Désespérés, ils contactent le couple Ed et Lorraine Warren, des «démonologues» spécialisés dans ce genre d'affaires. À l'issue d'un rituel d'exorcisme, le petit David est libéré, mais le Diable n'a pas dit son dernier mot. Comme s'il jouait à saute-mouton, le Malin passe du jeune David à Arne Johnson, le petit ami de la sœur aînée de David. La table est mise pour un drame en devenir : le meurtre d'un certain Alan Bono. Cette incroyable histoire a été le canevas du film à succès La conjuration 3 : Sous l'emprise du Diable (2021).
