Coach Mikki (00:06):
Okay, come on,
bring it in.
Bring it in, listen up, listenup.
Hey, I'm Coach Mickey andyou're on 4thin1 Mindset.
Success doesn't come with a GPS.
How many times have you beentraveling whether it is in life,
whether it's on the field, evenjust taking a trip and all of a
sudden you are hit with eithera detour or five lanes go down
(00:29):
into one lane and everybody'strying to merge in and it just
slows you way down, or, betteryet, you get detoured way off
the highway and you're going 20miles out of your way before you
can merge back on.
I've had this happen many, manytimes, not only traveling across
country, but also even on thefield.
(00:50):
I've even had it within my lifethat all of a sudden, things
are going really great.
You think you got it alltogether, you've got this game
plan and everybody's on the samepage, until something else is
presented to you that you'relike okay, wasn't ready for that
one.
So we were getting ready toplay.
This was with my Okchoff team.
(01:10):
These were I had 17 players.
Every other team we played waspacked with a lot of other
players, anywhere between 30 to40 players.
And here I walk onto the fieldwith my 17 guys and 17 guys with
heart.
So let's start with that.
And during this timeframebecause I just happened to be
(01:33):
doing really well and winningquite a few of our games and it
was all on my guys they reallyhad the passion, the drive to do
this and I have to give themcredit because they didn't care
what was thrown up against them.
They still would go out thereand do their job and make it
happen and they didn't allowthings to get in their way.
(01:54):
So we showed up on the field tothis one game that we were going
to play and when we arrived, usually they give you an area
that you can go and warm up onand usually it's some field off
the main field and it's usuallya grass field or maybe a
practice field or somethingalong those lines.
(02:14):
But when we arrived, we wereinformed that they had no place
for us to warm up.
However, their team was out ona grassy area.
That was well.
It was big enough to be able tofit two teams.
We could have each taken a sideand usually when you do that,
you just make a wall of guys, you line up so you can't see
(02:35):
what the other team's doing asyou're doing your warm-ups.
But we were told no, we had towarm up on the sideline, where
we were on the track and thebleach.
We were right up against thebleachers.
Now, the other thing too isthey did not want us wearing our
cleats on the track, andrightfully so, because you know
it tears up their track and outof respect, you know, we don't
(02:59):
do that anyway.
So you know you walk from thefield and that's it, and usually
the sideline.
You've got more room anyway andthey have to worry about it.
So we found a patch of grassthat was between the very, very
end of the track and it wasfenced in.
So we had a very small area andthen you had the track and then
(03:19):
you had the main field.
So I told my guys to go downthere.
I said go ahead, just grab aball, let's go down there, we'll
break it up.
So what I did was I ran through, called in my teams.
I said, okay, you know, calledin everybody.
So everybody knew who wasstarting and where we were.
And then, once we got them linedup, I said everybody sit down,
(03:39):
just sit down.
I said this is the deal.
They're not going to give us aplace to warm up.
This is it, this is what we get.
And they were like oh man, blah, I can't believe it.
And I said you know what?
Forget it, I don't care whatthey want us to do, let's focus
on what we need to do.
So I said this is just minor, this is just an obstacle that
we're just going to have toaddress and look at.
So this is what we're going todo, guys, I said, since we don't
really have the room to evenput a line and we don't have a
(04:02):
room, we can't throw a footballbecause we can't be throwing it
on the field because there wasanother game going on.
I said everybody sit down.
I said I'm going to go throughthe playbook.
I said I want everybody toclose your eyes, take a deep
breath.
I said we're going to runthrough all of these plays in
our head and then I'm going tocall each one of you and tell me
exactly what you did.
What does that play mean to you?
What did you do?
(04:22):
Where are you supposed to go?
How are you supposed to block?
And we went through everysingle play and as we went
through, I called out each oneand I called out my receivers, I
called my running backs when wegot to defense.
We got to punt, we got toprofessional teams, all of it.
We went through the whole thingmentally and then I said, okay,
we can't throw a football, solet's do this.
(04:43):
I said everybody, just give methe line.
I said pretend like you have aball.
We're not even going to use afootball.
I said I'm just going to callout the play and I want you guys
just to walk through it, justtake one or two steps and then
know exactly what you'resupposed to do.
So that's what we did.
(05:03):
So it was our time to play.
We got out there.
I brought in the guys.
I'm like you guys got this, youguys have we got you coach.
We got you coach.
I brought in the guys.
I'm like you guys got this, youguys have it.
We got you coach, we got youcoach.
I said that's right, just goout there and do your job, do
exactly what you need to do andyou'll be fine.
So we got out there and weplayed, and my guys played their
hearts out.
We won, we won and theycelebrated and I celebrated them
(05:26):
and it was a little bit more ofa celebration of a win than
just a win because they threwsomething at us.
They gave us a detour, theytook us off our path and they
really thought it was going tohurt us and instead my guys
played the best game they'veever played.
I say that they played alltheir games.
(05:48):
We got to our Super Bowl.
That was the best game theyever played.
I say that they played alltheir games.
We got to our Super Bowl.
That was the best game theyever played.
But during the season, that wasa really good game for them and
I was really proud of them andI was so proud that they were
able to step up and they didn'tget frustrated and they didn't
get discouraged based on asetback that somebody else threw
to them.
(06:09):
And you have to look at this andI've learned so much over the
years, especially working withkids and seeing what they do and
how they deal with stuff andagain they're looking to me as a
leader and a mentor.
So however I react is howthey're going to react, and I
came in with a game plan.
I overcame a challenge.
(06:29):
I try to teach them how to bementally tough, how to be
adaptable, how to see thingsfrom a different perspective.
So when we're going throughthese obstacles and we get hit
with this crazy thing wherethese twists and turns and
detours.
We have to look at it and gookay, what do I want to do with
(06:53):
this?
How do I want to deal with this?
Because you are in the driver'sseat.
It's still your choices.
You know, for example, I'vedriven cross country many, many
times and I can't tell you howmany times I'd get to a city I'd
never even been through or evenknew about, and I knew about it
but I just never been there.
(07:14):
And there'd be a detour, belike this construction, and it'd
take me way off.
I'd go through these littletiny towns that I had never seen
before, had no idea they evenexisted, and I can tell you
there were times it was thecoolest thing because, you know,
if I had to stop and get gas,if I wanted to stop and get a
cup of coffee, I'd end up inthese little towns and I'd
(07:34):
discover some really cool stuffand I met some really cool
people and it was really, reallyfun.
And I would have neverdiscovered that if I had stayed
on the I-40.
If I'd stayed on the I-40 andnever got off onto any of these
other little towns, I would havenever met some of the people or
maybe tasted some of thisdifferent food or discovered
(07:58):
some of the fun things.
I've picked up things here andthere that I've found and I
would have never found it if Ihadn't had that opportunity.
Now, detours and roadblockssometimes they're annoying.
We do get frustrated and we getslowed way down.
You know, what I've learnedfrom this is don't be in such a
(08:19):
hurry.
Take the time, step back, tryto learn from it, get creative,
try to figure out what can youdo with this.
Sometimes, when I'm stuck intraffic and I get that a lot
here in LA, I live in SouthernCalifornia and if I have to go
north many, many times it's along trip and I can guarantee
(08:39):
I'm going to get stuck intraffic.
Matter of fact, I live on ahighway called the 405, and we
call it four or five because ittakes four or five hours to get
to LA, when it's really like anhour trip.
But I use that as an opportunity.
A lot of times I go through myhead.
I make it an opportunity for meto regroup.
Sometimes I listen to things tohelp me move forward in some of
(09:03):
the stuff I need to do, whetherit be game plans.
Sometimes I call my coaches, sometimes I just come up with
stuff Just because somethingsets you back and you have to
slow down.
Use it as a gift.
Think of it as an opportunityto actually grow a little bit
more and maybe decide somethingdifferent.
And so what if you're facing alittle bit of uncertainty?
(09:26):
If you're facing uncertainty, that's okay, you know.
Use it to grow.
Choose that other action overfear, or choose that growth over
your comfort.
You know being in our comfortlevel and being in our comfort
zone is not a good place to beall the time.
Anyway, a lot of times you gotto step out if you're really
going to grow as a person.
That's another podcast, anothertime Wrapping this up.
(09:49):
I just want to leave you withthis.
Success just isn't linear.
It's not.
It's going to be full ofdetours, and detours are going
to make you stronger and yourchoices are going to determine
how you grow.
So embrace the uncertainty anduse it as part of your journey
and give yourself an opportunityto just take what you have and
(10:11):
grow from it and become strongerand then celebrate.
Celebrate that moment where yougot thrown something that you
didn't expect and you overcameit.
So bring it on in.
Bring it in.
So start strong and finishstrong and dominate everything
in between.
Let's go.
