Can potential alone catapult you to success, or is it your willingness to act that truly makes the difference? In our latest episode, inspired by the legendary Mike Tomlin, Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers,  we explore how action, rather than mere potential, distinguishes dreamers from achievers.  Coach Mikki dives into the realm of commitment, exploring how stepping beyond comfort zones and staying focused can transform aspirations into achievements, even amidst life's hurdles. The discussion revolves around the importance of taking consistent action and evaluating whether you are merely relying on your capabilities or truly striving for greatness.

Throughout her conversation, we also tackle the subtle art of balance and how distractions can impede progress. It's all about identifying what's truly important and letting go of the rest. We also delve into the power of the compound effect—how small, consistent efforts can lead to monumental success. Whether it's replacing unproductive habits with purposeful actions or staying committed even when the spotlight's off, this episode is your call to embrace challenges and channel your willingness into success. Tune in to discover how you can harness the power of action to turn your potential into tangible results.

Coach Mikki (00:00):
Okay, come on, bring it in.
Bring it in.
Come on, listen up.
Listen up, it's not about whatyou're capable of, it's what
you're willing to do.
That's a quote by Mike Tomlin, head coach of the Pittsburgh
Steelers.
He's led his team to 11 playoffappearances, seven division
titles, three AFC championshipgames, two Super Bowl

(00:22):
appearances and one Super Bowl43.
And the most amazing thingabout this is he did it all
before age 36.
I really wanted to cover thistoday because a lot of times, we
are out there doing what we'recapable of, but is it what we're
really willing to do?

(00:42):
So if you're going through alot of emotions and you're doing
everything that you know youcan do out of your capability,
are you really thriving to beextraordinary?
Have you really gone that extrastep?
So many people have potential, but potential means nothing

(01:04):
without action.
So many people have potential, but potential means nothing
without action.
So if I have the potential ofmaking, actually this is perfect
.
I will use this as an example.
So I have the potential ofbecoming an NFL coach, but have
I gone through the actions toget me there?
Do you have the potential toget you to where you want to go

(01:28):
in your next goal, your nextstep, your next success, but
have you taken the actions to doit?
Because we all have naturaltalents and abilities, but
success comes to those who arewilling to put in the work
consistently, even when it getstough.
And we have got times in ourlives that we're going to be

(01:51):
sideswiped and tackled andthings are going to hit us line
side that we didn't expect.
And there's going to be thingsthat happen that are out of our
control and we're going to haveto look at it and go okay, is
this going to be something thatrequires my attention or is this
a distraction?
Now, if it's something thatrequires your attention, totally

(02:11):
understand we all have thingsthat happen in our lives,
whether it be with family, whether it be with our finances,
whether it be with somethingthat just stops us in our tracks
from what we're trying to do.
It doesn't mean that this hasto be something that is the
demise of our goal.
There's always a willing and away to get around it, and

(02:31):
willingness is to go beyond.
That is what's going toseparate us from the dreamers
and the achievers, because I cansay all day oh, I would like to
do this, or I wish I could dothat or this would be nice.
However, the difference betweenthat is the actions that are
taken to make those a reality, and true success is about

(02:55):
stepping outside your comfortzone.
Sometimes it's sacrificing andstaying committed.
Are you willing to do what ittakes, even when no one's
watching?
And I say this a lot to my guysbecause they're always like, oh
gosh, I got school and I gotthis and I got practice and I'm
like, okay, and I get it.
We all have responsibilities, and I think there's a miracle in

(03:18):
the middle when it comes tobalance.
However, how much time are youwasting doing things that really
aren't productive, and what doI mean by that?
Maybe the mind rot of scrollingthrough a social media platform
or just doing something that isnot really productive?
Now, I'm not saying you have tobe 24-7 focusing on everything

(03:43):
that you need to do, because, again, there has to be a balance
.
However, I do know that thereis things that do take away and
that are distractions that willkeep us from moving forward.
So, if we replace thosedistracting things and use that
time to be able to learn, train,do something, take one step

(04:05):
closer to our goal.
It's a compound effort.
It's a compound effort, everylittle thing you do is going to
contribute to where you want tobe, and I've seen it.
I've seen it over and over, year after year.
So you have to embrace thosechallenges.
You know the harder the task, the stronger your willingness
really needs to be.
I've had a lot of guys over theyears that have really wanted to

(04:28):
step into roles that they justwere not physically able to do,
and I loved their passion andtheir drive and I could see it
that they really wanted it.
And instead of just tellingthem, sorry, buddy, you're not
going to be able to fill thisrole, what I would say to them
especially if I knew I was goingto see them the following year,
work with them, because if theycame in as a freshman and I

(04:51):
knew I'd have them all the wayup to their senior year I could
help them evolve into the playerthat they wanted to be, for
multiple reasons.
One, we know whatever you looklike and however you are coming
in as a 14-year-old, you aregoing to be completely different
by the time you become a seniorand your body has turned into
an 18-year-old.
So what I would tell them is Iknow you want this position and

(05:16):
I got you.
However, what I'd like for youto do is fill this position that
we've got you in right nowbecause, again, it's always a
team effort and everybody's gota job that's going to help us
succeed.
But for you as an individual,if you really really want this,
you're going to have to decidewhat is it going to take to get
you there.
If you really want to be thatreceiver, if you really want to

(05:39):
be that slot back or thatrunning back or whatever
position it happens to be, thenyou're going to have to step out
of your comfort zone and dowhatever it's going to take to
get you there.
And you're going to have toalso understand that willingness
means doing the hard thingsinstead of settling for good
enough.
And I'd watch them and I couldtell the ones that really wanted

(06:02):
it, because they were the onesthat went above and beyond.
They'd stay after practice andask for additional help.
They'd go to another coach orthey'd get with their buddies
that were actually playing thatposition and they would go out
there and sometimes just havesome fun out on the field.
But I'd also see him out thereon the weekends and I'll give
you an example.

(06:22):
I had a player and incredibleperson and he was playing two
sports and he really, reallywanted to fulfill being a kicker
and he was also playing soccerand he was great.
He's a great athlete anyway.
And I said to him and just likeI've said to other players, I

(06:42):
said look, I know you have alove for both of these sports,
but there is going to come apoint where you're going to have
to decide what is moreimportant to you.
Where do you see your futuregoing?
What are you going to do to getyou to the next level?
And sometimes it might meansacrificing the other thing.
And I said, if you really wantthis position, if you really see

(07:04):
yourself taking a scholarshipor making yourself to the next
level or playing in college, then you're going to have to
decide which sport you reallywant to focus with, because as
you go forward, you're going tohave to focus on those things.
Now, if it doesn't matter, thenyeah, by all means, have fun,
do what you love, keep goingforward.

(07:25):
But if you really want one ofthose things, you're going to
have to focus on it and it'sgoing to define you.
At the end of the day, it's notabout what you have done, it's
about what you did and did youtake those next steps to get you
to the next position, to moveyou forward in your business, to
move you forward in your life,to move you forward in whatever

(07:46):
the passion is that you have, that you want to accomplish?
Your legacy isn't going to bebuilt on your potential.
It's going to be built on youractions and every day ask
yourself am I doing all I can?
Am I doing all I can?
Am I doing all I can?
Because you are going to haveto answer that yourself, because

(08:07):
, at the end of the day, noone's judging you on whether you
got yourself to the next stepor did you do something that got
you closer to your goal.
Only you can answer that.
I want to ask you what are youwilling to do today to chase
that dream, to grasp that dream?
Forget about chasing it.
I don't think chasing anythingis really going to help, because
sometimes you never catch it.

(08:28):
You got to grasp it.
You have to go after it.
You have to go for it witheverything that you want and not
allow anything to get in theway, because the choice is yours
.
The choice is yours.

(08:48):
It really is.
So I want you to remember yourcapability, use it and use it in
those actions.
Have the willingness to gobeyond.
Embrace the challenges.
There's actions over excuses.
Make sure that you're doingeverything you can and not use
an excuse to get you in the wayof what you really want and your
willingness defines you.
Go out there, go give iteverything you've got, so bring

(09:09):
it in.
Bring it in.
Start strong and finish strongand dominate everything in
between.
I'm Coach Mickey.
Go get them.
