Allison (00:00):
You are serving people
when you are optimizing your
(00:02):
site.
What use is your website if thepeople you know you can serve
can't find it.
(00:33):
Welcome to the Author's Edge.
I'm Allison Lane, making surethat your marketing is simple
because around here we makemarket example for writers and
creatives and entrepreneurs andthought leaders.
Because being an expert yourselfis one thing, but now you have
to market yourself.
(00:55):
Yikes, nobody wants to become anexpert in marketing too, except
me'cause I already am.
I am here today, we areanswering a listener question.
I started last week, so this ispart two.
If this is the first episodeyou're listening to, you might
wanna listen to last week'sepisode just to get centered.
(01:21):
We're talking about websitesetup and SEO, because having a
website is one thing, but makingsure people can actually find
it.
It's a whole differentchallenge.
And we need to talk about easyways to set up and manage your
website, which also, I'm gonnatry to slow down when I use
(01:46):
marketing language, butoptimizing your site.
Yes, yes, you can gag with me,that is Marketing Jargony.
Optimizing your site for SEO,which is search engine
optimization.
Let's get into it because thegood news is you don't have to
be a tech expert to get yourwebsite up and running with
(02:08):
solid SEO.
So, today, I'm gonna break downsome all in one platforms that
can handle website building andSEO for you.
I'm also gonna talk to you aboutgetting easy to find SEO experts
who can optimize your site inless than 24 hours because it
(02:31):
really is not difficult when youfind an expert.
But if you try to become theexpert.
You will pull out all of youreyelashes and I don't want that
for you.
You will look weird.
The third thing that we'll talkabout are simple tools, and one
of them is super duper, duperfree.
(02:51):
And it's really good.
Simple tools to help you rankhigher.
And when I say you, you arealready a big effing deal but I
mean, your website is going torank higher.
So, if SEO feels overwhelming, stick around, I am making this
easy.
So, the question is, and again, every Thursday, I'm answering
(03:13):
listener questions.
If you want to ask me aquestion, go to this episode's
description.
And at the very top it says, send me a text.
So, click it and send me a text.
You can send me a question or acomment or a request, or a book
(03:34):
that you love that you wouldlike to shout out?
PS, if you are writing a book orif your book is out, or it's
going to come out.
Yeah, send that to me.
That would be great.
I would love to hear from you.
And if you make sure to give meyour name, the thing is, it
doesn't tell me your name, unless you put your name in the
(03:54):
text or in the comment, I won'tknow.
So, I will just call youlistener or Hazel, since that's
the name of my dog.
Okay.
Back to the question for today.
How do you quickly set up andoptimize a website for SEO,
especially, if you're not techsavvy.
(04:14):
I am not tech savvy.
Tech tangles are my every day,and I have to know to slow down
and find solutions that work forme.
The solutions that work for meare what I am sharing with you.
Only because you're here and youwant to hear from me.
(04:35):
There are many, many ways tomake this simple, but because my
tech head is not really afunctioning part of my mind.
I'm gonna focus on the threesimplest ways to improve your
website's SEO without becomingan expert.
First, if you need a primer onwhat to name your website or how
(05:00):
to establish your website.
Go back and listen to lastweek's episode.
You'll be happy you did.
And it's less than 20 minutes,so for sure while you're in
traffic, you can do it.
Okay.
There are three simple ways toimprove your website's SEO,
without feeling like you need totake a class'cause gosh, nobody
(05:21):
has time for that.
Okay.
The first is using an all-in-onewebsite builder, like Kajabi,
which is what I use.
I will put my link in the chat.
And actually, if you end upgoing with Kajabi, I offer like
a session with me so I couldshow you how I use it best.
(05:45):
So, you can decide to use that.
It's hassle-free and it hasbuilt in SEO features.
And then, the great thing aboutKajabi is that it offers like
Kajabi University, and acommunity, and you'll love it.
And everything's included.
So, it's like a all in oneexperience and it is high, high
(06:07):
delivery, super investedcustomer service.
Another way to improve yourwebsite's SEO is to hire someone
who could just get in there andset it up for you and a fast and
an affordable way to optimizeyour site is to hire an SEO
expert from Fiverr.
(06:29):
Fiverr is F-I-V-E-R r.com.
I have done this when I finallyhad a temper tantrum over tech
Tangles, say that two timestwice.
I was so near angry tears that Iwas like, or I cannot do this
anymore.
I cannot spend one more seconddoing something that I know I'm
(06:53):
gonna screw up.
So, Fiverr is where I foundsomeone, and I'll get into some
details.
The third way is to use free SEOtools like Google.
Google has a section that youneed to know about called people
also Ask, and also there's aChrome extension called Keywords
(07:16):
Everywhere.
These are easy ways to find whatyour audience is searching for.
Let me break these down for you.
The first thing I want you toknow about is, are these all in
one website builders likeKajabi?
Squarespace is another one, butI don't use Squarespace.
I think they're really kind ofequal.
You could go with either one.
(07:37):
They both come with templatesand whatever in terms of layout.
But if you want an SEO friendlywebsite without dealing with
coding or plugins, platformslike Kajabi are great.
I was formerly on WordPress, which people do love, but I
(07:58):
deleted my website twice byaccident because of, I don't
know, sausage fingers.
I don't know how it happened, but it required plugins and it
was more than my brain couldhandle, but many, many people
love WordPress and more power toyou.
Still, if you want an SEOfriendly site, Squarespace, I
(08:20):
use Kajabi.
The great thing about Kajabi isthat it's the website, the blog,
the SEO, the email marketing, even online courses if you want
to provide something.
And there are no extra toolsthat you need to install.
So, that is super duper.
This is a choice that you canmake if you are trying to
(08:43):
establish your digital presencein your digital headquarters
fast and without dealing withheadaches.
This is probably for you.
The next option for you ishiring an SEO expert, which I
have done on Fiverr.
If you already have a website, and you need SEO help fast.
(09:08):
This is the way to go.
Fiverr is a great place to findaffordable experts who can do
what you need done.
This includes anything beyondSEO.
You need a jingle for yourpodcast.
You need your YouTube channelset up.
You can find someone, they tellyou exactly what they're gonna
(09:30):
do.
There's a price that theyassigned to it, and they ask for
your information, and they doit.
It's not coaching or consulting.
It's, they get it done and it isincredible.
When I hired my guy, and youcould do this too, you can hire
(09:53):
an SEO expert to do exactly whatI had done.
And I'm gonna tell you exactlywhat he did.
First, you'll want them tooptimize your site's meta
titles, which is data that'skind of under the hood.
We can't see it, but it's inthere.
(10:14):
So, the metadata, which aretitles and descriptions of each
of your web pages.
Because Google ranks your pageshigher when your site is
optimized.
Also, they can find and add therate keywords so that your
(10:34):
audience can actually discoveryou.
They might audit your site andsay, I know that you're focused
on this, but the keywordsassociated in with your topics
also include, you know, thesefive keywords that you're gonna
wanna sprinkle in onto yourpages and in your page
(10:56):
descriptions.
They can also improve the speedof your site, like the loading
speed of your site and thetechnical SEO.
Slow websites, send viewersaway.
People do not have even amillisecond to waste.
(11:17):
And if your site has a bunch ofautomations where things are
moving around.
You were eating up their timeand I would say do less of that.
But your SEO expert can help youdo that.
I would look for people whodescribe their services as SEO
audit or website optimization, and that's usually found in
(11:40):
their title.
And there's a search window thatyou can search for what you
want.
The person I hired, I think, oh,well, first of all, he was
finished in a day and a half, which was amazing.
I was like, oh my gosh, whatelse can you do?
And he did it for under 50bucks.
(12:03):
So many people offer this typeof quick fix for under 50 bucks.
The third step you couldconsider is using Google's
people also ask, which is if yougo to Google and you type in
what your listener, or what youraudience, or what your reader is
searching for, or what they'recomplaining about, or what they
(12:25):
really want in life.
Scroll down maybe a third of apage and you'll see a section
called people also ask withthree or four questions.
What Google's doing is showingyou what people are usually
searching for.
Which is amazing.
So, you'll see this box withrelated questions.
(12:45):
These are the real questionspeople are searching for.
Which means they're greatcontent ideas for your website
or a blog page on your website.
Answering these questions inyour site's content will help
you rank higher in searchresults.
So, it's like Google is saying, please do this because we know
(13:10):
people are searching forsomething and it would be great
if we could just point them toyour site.
The other free tool, and I thinkthis is free, or it might be
like, I don't know,$25 for alifetime subscription is A
Chrome extension.
So, you can go to the Google AppStore, and get this extension
(13:34):
for Chrome called keywordseverywhere.
And this tool shows the volumeof searches and keywords when
people Google something.
So, you'll see which words andphrases are most searched.
Which means you can include themon your site.
(13:56):
So, for example, if you arewriting about, I don't know,
rescuing feral cats, yourkeywords everywhere might show
related searches.
Like, what to do with feral catsin my yard.
You know, it'll look for Feraland cats, or rescuing cats.
(14:22):
The tip here is to use toolsthat find the exact phrases that
your audience is searching for.
And then, use those words onyour pages, and your blog posts,
and in the descriptions of thepage, which are on the backend
of your site.
(14:42):
We can't see that in the front.
So, summing up, take a look atthese all-in-one options.
These all-in-one platforms likeKajabi, or go to Fiverr, and
find yourself an SEO expert thatcan do an audit and take care of
that for you.
They're quick and affordable andreally lifesavers for someone
(15:06):
like me who does not want toinvest time in becoming an
expert in SEO.
Or use some free SEO tools likeGoogle's people also ask, I
mean, it's there for everyone, for the taking.
And It really helps you findwhat your audience is already
(15:27):
searching for so you can rankhigher.
So that people can find thesolutions that you are
providing.
That's what Google wants andthat's what you want.
We are here to serve, not sell.
So you're serving people whenyou're spending time optimizing
your site.
(15:47):
I want you to really take thatin.
You are serving people when youare optimizing your site.
What use is your website if thepeople you know you can serve
can't find it.
This is their way of findingyou, so please help them, for
the love of Pete.
Setting up and optimizing awebsite does not have to be
(16:09):
complicated or take months andmonths.
And whether you go with an allin one platform like Kajabi, or
hire an expert, or use the freetools, the key is getting
started.
Do one thing.
Go to Google and take the 30seconds it takes to scroll down
(16:31):
and take a look at people alsoask, that's your first step.
