Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's up?
Speaker 2 (00:00):
I am right lee backstage at Laala, but I'm not
by myself, Daniel, see man, Hi.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
How's it going? How are you?
Speaker 3 (00:07):
I'm so good?
Speaker 1 (00:08):
All right?
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Before we did everything Laala music? Can we just talk
about the fits that we are on one accord?
Speaker 3 (00:13):
Insane of us insane?
Speaker 4 (00:15):
We also both have tooth gaps and that makes me
love you even more man.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Because like I'm trying to get the gap fixed.
Speaker 4 (00:20):
Maybe no, dude, but everyone tells you no, right, yes, yeah, same.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
They're like it's charming, and.
Speaker 4 (00:25):
You're like, I you're bro yours.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Mine's more like noticeable though.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Is mine pushing in a little because usually.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
Yeah, you're just kind of like okay, mine is okay.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
I like you, Okay, we'll talk about it after. Yo,
you're at Lala first time? So how are you feeling good?
Speaker 3 (00:41):
It?
Speaker 4 (00:41):
It actually legitimately is the first time I've ever performed
at a festival in my life.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
Even my band that I was in we never did
a festival. Yeah, so I'm not gonna lie. I was
shipping brakes before I went up there. We didn't like
sound check or anything, just win in like cold Turkey.
But the second I got on that stage. Yeah, I
felt like I was at home and the fans really
showed up and god, it was just a rush.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Like I'm still in processing how much fun it was.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
You How what is the difference though, Like before you
were performing with the band. Yeah, it's a group of
you guys, so I'm nervous. You know, you got you
can hold up, but now you're by yourself.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
No, the responsibility shift is pretty nuts. You can't like before,
you know, you could kind of be like, hey, you
want to sing this part of my voice exactly, you
gotta sing the whole set.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
I also like feel like I really bit more than
I could shoot. Well, no, I can get it done.
But I I decided to take on playing like all
the instruments I play, which is on stage, which like
we have like a cello out there, piano, guitar, electric drums,
and like I do a thing on the looper And
don't get me wrong, it's so fun, but it's still
(01:48):
so new to me, Like I didn't do that in
my band. Yeah, every time I get up there, I'm like,
I hope I do this good show.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
How talented? Thank you, because not a lot of artists
can do that.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Thank you.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
Yeah, I've been trying to like get comfortable with winging
it more because I think the best stuff comes out
of that. And I will say La La was a
big moment for me of just kind of going up
being like, we have to wing it and I'm gonna
choose to enjoy that.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Yeah, And it was very enjoyable. I love that.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah, new song out, new song. Yeah, the older I
get yep.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Yeah, it's funny the lyrics in that song because I
was just having a conversation with somebody. Yeah, like, Yo,
you used to go to high school with people and
then now you see they've married, and it's yeah different,
but yeah, you grew up with it was crazy, crazy
talk about it.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
I mean I'm twenty five now, I'm growing up. And
I think when I was working on my album and
trying to write songs, I typically veered away from like
writing about anything past love. And I think that naturally
happens when you come out of a boy band. That's
kind of like an obvious go to to write about.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Nothing wrong with it. Got a lot of songs about love.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
But I just never even really gave it food for
thought of trying to write a song about life. And
that day I was just in a conversation with you know,
the other writers in the room. It was BJ Kiddo
and Michael Pollock and we were just kind of chatting
about life, and they asked me how my life has
been doing, and at the time, it actually was going terrible.
(03:16):
Had a lot of like crazy, uh pretty like I
don't know, traumatic life experience happened in like two years.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
The band broke up, my mom got cancer. She did
it though, so that's good. Parents got divorced.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
I lost my best friend in a car wreck and
on his birthday and was there at the scene of
the wreck, and like a lot of life happened, and
so you know, they kind of came in, Sorry this
is a lot, but you know, they came in, like
how was life? And I just went on this rent
of all the bad and I think it was Poulick.
Someone was like, try now to list off just as
(03:52):
many good things as the bad things you.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Just listed off.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
You might surprise yourself and within like ten minutes to
list a good things balanced out the list of bad things. Yeah,
and I kind of went It's funny, you know, even
when things are bad, if you really do just take
a second to think about the good happening at the
same time, It's always there facts.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
So this song went from this sad rant.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
To like a really hopeful, eclectic song about just like
the way life goes and the melody that you hear
and the vocal you hear on the song. Yeah, was
the first recording I ever did of it. We wrote
it like a poem and I just went into the
booth and I've never done it this way.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
I just like saying it.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
We didn't really talk about the melody at all, just
came out and it was like a magical day.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
We finished it in like twenty minutes.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Now, hearing everything that you were going through and now
seeing you performing on stage, I see why you were no,
but I see why you were saying like it's an
emotional you know.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
The happiness is a decision, And before things went bad
for me, I didn't see that or believe that for myself.
And I remember one day looking up in my bed
at the ceiling, feeling like life was about to turn
me into a vegetable.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
And it could have.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
I could have gone a really dark route and that
would have been easier. And that day I decided I'm
going to fight to make moments good for myself. I'm
gonna fight to get to that place I want to
be in life. This was a year ago.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
I was also bankrupt, like a lot of stuff was
going wrong.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
The only thing that got me here, Well, there's a
lot of amazing people and blessings that have gotten me here.
But I will say if I didn't make that decision
that day myself to just get up and try, would
not be here.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
So I hope that's.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Let's talk about you. Going on tour with Benson.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
Boone the best experience of my life, hands down. I
also think I didn't realize how much I missed having
like bros on the road with me. And he's probably
the coolest bro I could ever have as a friend.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
We have so much in common it's insane.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
But this dude is like deep, hearest of heart I
could literally ever be like. And he's just such a
cool dude. Like he really is like an adrenaline junkie.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
He's insane.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
The stuff we were doing before show was like I
should have like broken legs right now, like insane.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
He's a stuntman.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
He is the coolest dude I met and I'm just like,
I can't believe I get to call my friend.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
Yeah, his friendship means so so much to me.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
I could make the rest of this interview about that fool,
like really like I love that guy so much.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
All right, so you're solo artist right now, yes, sir,
band thing, But I gotta ask you, are there any
artists that you would want to collab with?
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Right now? Oh?
Speaker 4 (06:32):
My gosh, right now, I've been on a two thousands kick. Okay,
so it might not be like a current artist, but
like Cold plays like the coolest thing.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Okay, I can see it.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
I think they're even just to like write a song
with Chris Martin would be like so so sick.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
I think that's it.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
I also just just discovered Temper Trap, and I think
they're sick.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Yeah. Probably Yeah, a lot of older bands. But I'm running.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
I'm right now, I'm not mad in the two thousands.
All right. Before we get out of here, we're gonna
play a game this or that, this or that, this
or that.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Let's go call a text call FaceTime.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Whoa yeah FaceTime.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
Yeah, I'm a terrible texter. Like, so, if my phone's
not buzzing more than once, like a text. You just
get like I need like m and then I finally.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Oh you know, no, unless you like my mama diad,
don't face time at all. All right, stay in or
go out.
Speaker 4 (07:26):
Uh, it's a tough one. Last year, stayed in the
whole year. Okay, this year going out. It's been fun. Yeah,
so right now going out.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Going out? I love it, man, last few words for Chicago,
the yours Chicago.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
I freaking love you guys. This morning too, I was
at the Bean and played for some fans. I expected
like twenty of y'all to show up. There's a lot
more than twenty, and.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
It was really fun.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
No, I love y'all so much. You don't know how
much you mean to me and what you're doing for
me right now. It means the world. Yeah, you guys,
I want to live here. I'm so seriously, I really
like chtown.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
Shoutdown so much. I'm shy. There's nothing.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
There's nothing like that. So you can maybe do summer
here and then or else in the winter.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yeah, that's a good idea. There it is, man, And
I love Nando's. Okay, I'm done, man, thank you for
being here. Loved this.
