Drupal development requires more than a code editor.

Developers need PHP, a web server, a database, Composer, Drush, Git, configuration management, debugging tools, and a way to preview their work. Traditionally, this entire environment has lived on the developer’s computer—often introducing lengthy setup processes, version conflicts, port issues, hardware limitations, and the familiar problem: “It works on my machine.”

In this episode, we explore how browser-based VS Code changes the Drupal development workflow.

DrupalForge allows developers to launch a complete Drupal environment in the cloud and access it through a familiar VS Code-style interface in their browser. The editor is connected directly to the Drupal codebase, terminal, database, and running website.

This means developers can:

  • Edit custom modules and themes
  • Work with Twig, YAML, PHP, JavaScript, and CSS
  • Install and update packages with Composer
  • Run Drush commands
  • Manage code with Git
  • Inspect the database using phpMyAdmin
  • Preview changes on a live Drupal site
  • Share the working environment with teammates and clients

The browser is not simply displaying an online text editor. It is providing access to a complete Drupal development environment running in the cloud.

We also discuss how this model improves developer onboarding. Instead of asking every new developer, freelancer, student, or contributor to reproduce the project environment on their own computer, teams can provide a preconfigured workspace containing the tools and versions needed for the project.

Browser-based development can also make Drupal training and contribution more accessible. Everyone begins with a consistent environment, regardless of whether they use Windows, macOS, Linux, or a less powerful computer. Trainers can focus on teaching Drupal instead of troubleshooting local installations.

For agencies and distributed teams, cloud environments make collaboration easier. Developers can share live previews, conduct design and QA reviews, support pair programming, demonstrate progress to clients, and work with the same running Drupal environment.

Local development tools still have an important place, particularly for offline work and deeply customized local workflows. Browser-based development provides another option when speed, consistency, accessibility, onboarding, and collaboration matter most.

DrupalForge does not replace the familiar Drupal workflow. Developers still use VS Code, Composer, Drush, Git, configuration management, and Drupal’s normal development practices.

What changes is where the environment runs.

Instead of turning the laptop into the development server, the laptop becomes a window into a ready-to-use Drupal environment in the cloud.
