What does it mean to call two countries "brothers"? Confucius said it about the ancient states of Lu and Wei — and for 2,000 years, scholars couldn't agree on what he meant.

In passage 13.7, a cryptic seven-character phrase becomes a window into how the Confucian commentarial tradition actually works. We trace two rival interpretations: a 1st-century reading that Lu and Wei were founded by literal brothers — the Duke of Zhou and Kang Shu — who governed in harmonious, compatible ways; and an 11th-century reading by the poet Su Shi that both states were "brothers" in dysfunction, their rulers fleeing into exile and dying in the far-off Kingdom of Yue. Then we meet 朱熹 (Zhu Xi), the great synthesizer, who refused to choose — and whose decision shaped how the Analects was read for the next 700 years.

Along the way: the messy father-son war of 衛 (Wei), the Duke of Lu's doomed alliance against the powerful 三桓 (Three Families), King Gou Jian's sword recovered still-sharp after 2,500 years, and why a Han-dynasty scholar and a Song-dynasty poet were really asking two different questions about the same seven words.
