I'm great yourself.

I'm doing fantastic. Man, it's great and glorious and can't complain. So, hey,
we are we are in the midst of a series,
and we aren't too many series on this podcast, but
you're in the midst of a six part series around
business growth some things that you learned at a couple
of conferences you've you've gone to recently. So we were
getting to open up Josh's brain a little bit and

(01:10):
you get to.

Ooze out some expertise on us.

So let's let's talk about well, let's just jump right
back into the middle of the series. What do you
have for us today around business growth and things of
that nature.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
Yeah, and I think this will resonate with you, Michael,
because it was a concept got from really Russell Brunson
at Funnel Hockey Live. And uh, it's the concept of
being a drifter versus being driven. And yeah, so when
he when he he really opened this, opened the conference
talking about this and it was an interesting and in fact,

(01:42):
this was one of the first topics I came back
and taught my own team in my my businesses as
kind of a personal development because it was it was
important for us, Like in my gym for example, we
kind of like lead people, and so I wanted to
make sure that all of my team members we're all
of that driven mindset and or at least making sure

(02:05):
we're trending that way. So drifter being a drifter versus driven?
You ready for this?

Speaker 1 (02:10):
I am, yeah, because I've got a couple questions, but
I'm going to hold them until you answer them.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Probably, So yeah, So, and I think you're probably a
fan to from a Napoleon Hill and so I have
not I have not read the book, but a book
was recommended Outwitting the Devil. Have you read that yet?

Speaker 2 (02:26):
I've read the snippets of it, yes, yep.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
So in Napoleon Hill, his one of his quotes is
the devil's greatest weapon over human beings is the established
the habit of drifting. And so us as business owners,
sometimes we can have tendency to drift, either intentionally or unintentionally.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
All the time, all the time.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
I mean clearly it's not us. I mean clearly it's
everybody else. But as a as a business owner, and
I think this this there's in life in general, we
get that feeling of being called to do more. Yeah,
and and uh and I thought that was an interesting concept.
So uh, the initial response is usually like to refuse

(03:18):
the call, and it ultimately is fear because I'm not
worthy of that, you know, all the different reasons why
I shouldn't be chasing that dream. And uh. I was
interviewed yesterday about something else and uh, and the young
lady asked me what was the biggest words of advice
that could give somebody that was just graduating high school,
And uh, it was that to pursue, to be driven,

(03:40):
to pursue your whatever it is you want to pursue
at the time, at the moment, and that can always change, right,
You've experienced that, I'm sure to so, uh, but go
all in and continue to pursue that. So here's it. Yeah,
So as that it was along the lines you were
thinking there.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Oh it is, and to realize it's okay to pursue
those things. So many times our in our being, as
we're raised, or in our culture, it's like, well, no,
you shouldn't do that. You know, there's a phrase that
I learned years ago. You know, everybody loves success. We
just hate successful people. And I think that mentality comes

(04:20):
into our mind to go, well, I know if I
achieve at that level, then I'm going to be a
bad person. It's like, no, You're going to be able
to influence more people for good. So it's it really
is a mindset first to pursue and be driven to
accomplish great things with what God's given you.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Yeah, yep, absolutely, And I think, you know, Russell, he
made a good point. You think about movies. You know,
you watch a lot of movies that come out, and
usually the villains are all business people. Yes, and his
perception of that, and as soon as he said it, it
made sense. The media companies, the movie companies, are targeting.

(04:57):
You know, eighty to ninety percent of all people are drifters,
so right, and the money is in the people that
aren't driven. That's not the mass market. The mass market,
or is the minor is the majority of people with
eighty percent of the drifters. So the movies align with
the belief system of drifters because that's the majority of

(05:20):
the people and that's where the money's at.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
That's right. So that's interesting.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
One of my coaches, and you know him, he has
a phrase, and I hope people don't take offense to this,
but he talks about the one percent, the four percent
of people who are moving toward that one percent, and
then the ninety five percent who are the drifters. And
his phrase is beware of the ninety five percent because
they will drag you down. As entrepreneurs, we need to

(05:48):
be in that top five percent being driven in a
good sort of way to do more good, but we
have to be wary of the ninety five percent and
the thinking and the mentality and all of that. That's
that's very interesting.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
You bring that up, yep, because they are intentionally, unintentionally
pulling us back to either consciously or even subconsciously because
we're constantly have that pressure to be pulled back to
be quote unquote normal, you know, and uh, and we're
not normal. And that that will tie in with in
a couple of episodes talking about your inner circle and

(06:24):
making sure you surround yourself with the right people. We'll
talk about that coming up. But Uh, a couple of
points that Russell May I thought was right on is,
you know, fear versus faith, and you have you have
that concept of driven driven people? Are they operate in faith?
And uh? The alternative is like drifters, they operate in

(06:46):
fear driven people or they'll they'll naturally move into the
unknown in faith, and they'll also driven people will act
drifters get acted upon. Yeah, and so each day we
wake up, we have two choices, two impulses either fear
of faith and you have a choice. You always have

(07:08):
a choice.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
You do. Yeah, it's it's crazy you ring up the
Napoleon Hill. I've been I've been doing some noodling and
reading on him and some other people around that, and
just how much of our subconscious mind controller controls our
actions every day? How do you program your subconscious mind.
I've always been leery of that. You know, it's like,
well that seems worth But there are ways to program it.

(07:33):
As an autopilot goes. You know what, when I wake up,
I choose to be a positive, growth oriented person who
looks for opportunities to serve others, to accomplish great things
using the talents I have. If I program myself that way,
guess what, when I wake up, that's how I'm going
to think. And so it's not some magical, mysterial thing.

(07:55):
It's it's purposefully in faith saying here's the type of
person I want to be, and I'm just going to
tell myself that's how I am.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
It's kind of a weird thing, it is.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
It's a weird thing, and it edges on the the
you know, the the temptation of the wu wu stuff
and and you know I'm not that, yeah, but but
it is the subconscious is you know Dan Kenny always
talk about, you know, think about your your problem you're
trying to solve before bed, and overnight your subconscious will

(08:27):
go to work on that problem. And then nine times,
you know, it's like it's amazing how often like the
problems get solved. You wake up and like, well, duh,
or in the shower where it's at least you know,
they're like, oh, there's the answer that I've been trying
to search for. Yeah, so it's it's interesting and uh yeah,
without getting to woo and that's what that's the underlying

(08:48):
the things you tell your brain. And it really also
talks about and I don't remember her name, she was
a also fun hocking. She actually talked about that the
things you tell yourself matter a lot. One of the
common problems with entrepreneurs and small business owners that you
and I probably deal with, it's overwhelmed. They get overwhelmed.
And her was her sentence and her thing her coaching

(09:09):
was I don't do overwhelm. That's what she constantly told herself.
I don't do overwhelm. That's that's not who I am.
And so that in your mind, it's feeding your mind.
I don't do overwhelm. It's not an option. So yeah,
the mind is powerful, and so it's it's interesting. But
you know, Russell, he went on to talk about kind

(09:31):
of diving into what he calls the heroes to journey,
and there's there's two concepts. First of all, the first
thing is us as business owners, we typically achieved some
kind of goal, some kind of success, and that's the
growth for us as business owners. The second step is,
during that process of achieving that goal, the transformation of

(09:53):
who we became is that's what we end up contributing
to us theirs. Because we figured that out, we were like, Okay,
I've solved this problem for myself. I know that there
are other people like me that have this problem. Now,
as the entrepreneur brain starts to work, we're like, this
is a business you know exactly so it was. It's

(10:16):
an interesting concept because you ultimately your customers are you
five years ago?

Speaker 1 (10:25):
Mm yeah, yes, yeah, very much so, very much so,
which allows you to really show up with integrity. I
know in our company, we you know, we've got a
coaching program and we tell them we are teaching the
systems we use in our business. Because I was where
you are, right, and that's so true.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
M M.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
I like how you put.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Yeah, I never really thought about it that way. And
it could be for fitness, it could be for business growth,
it could be for really anything. But if you overlay
that entrepreneur mindset of here are the problems I solve
And we've talked about it a lot in the past,
like who the customers I really serve? Who am I
called to serve? That's really the journey that we're on

(11:11):
as business owners, whom I called to serve? And you
look back and it's like it's typically us in some
capacity five years ago, and then we learned to solve
that problem, and that's the growth and the transformation that
now we can take to serve our customers.

Speaker 1 (11:26):
Absolutely, yeah, and I'm sure you'll get into it in
another episode or two with your inner circle. All the
more reason to be in mastermind groups and coaching programs
with people who are as I was a smarter than you.
I always want to be like the dumbest guy in
the room.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
I want to grow.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
I don't want to join a group where I'm the
smartest guy. That would be a bad group for me
to be in. But because I want to learn from
people and I want to grow. Because there there are
no limits. I think that's the other limiting beliefs. So
many of us come into life with is there Well,
what's the ceiling?

Speaker 2 (12:00):
Know that there is one?

Speaker 3 (12:01):
Right, yep. I had a couple of conversations recently with
a couple of team members and just asking them. They
were in college and they're working part time for me
and uh in the gym and I'm like, you know, so,
what's what's the next step for you? And they're so
what do you what do you want to be? And
they had some pretty big aspirations, which is great. I'm like,
we's keeping you from doing that. And it was interesting

(12:23):
because one of my team members, his fiance came into
the gym just visiting and chatting and I'm asking her
the same thing because she graduates college in December, and
I'm like, great, what are you doing now? She it
was like Darren the Headlights. She had no clue and
I'm like, well, if you could do anything you wanted
to do, what would that be? And she, without hesitation,
gave me an answer and I'm like, great, why don't

(12:44):
you do that? And then she gave me a ton
of answers why she couldn't. Yeah, And it's that mindset
of the fear of the unknown and you talk yourself
out of it. Here's all the reasons I can't do it,
and ties back to that, are you driven and you're
stepping into faith or drifting?

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
I'm doing some research on there are tugs of war
time versus money, right, tug of war, well, security versus opportunity.
Exactly what you were talking there, right, is like oh
then fear, no fear versus faith. It is probably one two.
And as entrepreneurs we have to I think many times

(13:27):
fight against the security aspect to go there is no security.
My greatest security is my ability to create new ideas
and actually and serve people.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
That's my security.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
That's a mindset shift that happens over time, right, yep.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
And I'll add and one that kam obierscha in that
interview was what was the biggest challenge? Ask me what
was the biggest challenge? And again without hesitation, it was
work life balance and that tug of war that you're
describing because and I think we've talked about this before
where I'm not a big believer there's no such thing
as work life balance. It's it's one gives or the
other one gives, and it fluctuates and you have to

(14:05):
be Okay, I think we as an entrepreneur business person
having those sprints and strides where you're going to sacrifice
one or the other at some point and you just
the awareness that oh, this is this is what I'm
planning for. I know, I know it, and I'm okay
with it. But it's only for a small period of time,
right and.

Speaker 1 (14:24):
Uh and in that communicating to your family or your
work associates go, I'm getting ready to go into a
season of being out of balance. Let's let's work with
me for this next week, month, whatever it is.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
But I'm coming back right so that everybody understand.

Speaker 1 (14:41):
I think that's the underlying thing I'm learning the older
I get is communication over communicate because people we just
you cannot over communicate enough.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
And that and and your inner inner circle, your family, yes,
we are a lot of times because they're not us.
You know, my wife thinks I'm crazy. You know, she
knows who she married as far as a business person,
but you know, she won't talk to me. And she
she plays a good sport. She knows, like if I

(15:14):
have an idea and I just need to talk to
somebody about it, and I'm like, I have a question,
she knows, and no kidding, she's you know, she she
just tolerates me. Yeah, I'll get in front of the
whiteboard and I see her face, She's like, oh lord,
here we go. You know, so I'm whiteboarding something out
and she's great because she tolerates it and she she
just gives me that affirm of yep, sounds good. Now

(15:35):
she's on her phone planing the whole time, really not
even paying attention, but allows me to communicate it effectively,
get it out of my brain on a whiteboard with
an audience. And you know, she she's such a good
sport because she just kind of like goes with it
and lets me she knows, she knows that's exactly you know.

Speaker 1 (15:54):
Yeah, I'm just processing out loud. I just need I
need somebody there to go.

Speaker 2 (15:59):
Yeah, okay, good way to go.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
Yep, yeah, high five. That's right.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
That's love you baby, go for it.

Speaker 3 (16:07):
Yes. So uh that's that inner inner circle. We got
to have those and uh yeah.

Speaker 1 (16:12):
So so being driven and I think one thing I'm
learning is to have a daily routine. And there are
lots of books on morning routines and things, but it's
it's what what are you really driven for?

Speaker 3 (16:27):
You know?

Speaker 1 (16:27):
One of my favorite books is The One Thing talks
about the same thing, right being what is your one
thing that you're trying to go after in life today?
In every air all of that to go, Okay, that's
what I'm driven toward. It doesn't have to be money
or success. It could be greater intimacy with my wife
and communication. That could be my one right, that's what

(16:48):
I'm driven towards. Great, But as.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
Entrepreneurs, we got to keep it in front of us.

Speaker 1 (16:54):
I think, whether you're an entrepreneur or not, keep it
in front of you to say that's the vision, that's
where I'm that's what I'm driving towards.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Now, I've got to get.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
Through the stuff of the day, not get overwhelmed, but
say this is my one thing that I'm going to
accomplish and get her done.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
Yep. And and even the business lesson too. On top
of that driven driven ver versus being a drifter, uh,
you know, becoming that that category. King, Here's here's what
I'm really Here's the audience I'm called to serve, and
I do a really good job serving that audience. And
and Russell kind of summarize it like, here are the

(17:35):
two things you really do. You gather a group of
people of the people that you're called to serve. You
create a list of those people step one, and then
you make offers to those that same list of products
and services that you can help solve their problems. Mm hmm.
And it's really that simple.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
I hate it when you will make it that simple.
It's like, really, I want to make it more complex
than that.

Speaker 3 (18:03):
Yeah yeah, I'm like expecting a list of twenty five things,
and you know, it's like get a list of people
that you can really help and then help them help them.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
Yeah yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:14):
And you know what when you do it that way,
what comes out is is a lot of satisfaction. M
You generate revenue and profits because you're doing what you're
you love to do and what you're really good at.
But I think so many times in business we flip
that formula and say, how can I make the most
amount of money sor I mean the fewest amount of people.

(18:35):
Well that's kind of backwards, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (18:40):
Sometimes it's the uh we tend to over complicate things.
Maybe it's just me, but I'm yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:47):
I'm you just talked about the king, the category king.
I am the king of complexity. I like to make
things more complex than they ever need to be. And
it's like so that that's a good word to go
huh yeah, gather some people and serve them well, there
you go. There's a formula for success, right yeah.

Speaker 3 (19:04):
Yeah, so it seems like a good one liner.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (19:07):
Yeah, Well it all ties into you know, picking your
brain and understanding you know. In this In this episode,
we talked about the difference between drifting, being a drifter
or being driven and driven in a good sort of way,
because I'm not a type A personality and that's usually

(19:28):
what I think of when I think driven personality. Right, No,
I'm a type B, C or D, I'm not sure which.
But I'm driven around certain aspects of life and I've
got a vision for my future.

Speaker 2 (19:38):
That's what I'm driven toward. And in that process, I
want to serve people.

Speaker 1 (19:42):
I'm going to use the gifts I've been given, and
when I don't have a gift, I want to bring
somebody to the table who has that gift, right and
equip them and kind of like you're gymnasium people, Great,
why aren't you doing that?

Speaker 2 (19:53):
How can I help you get there? But being driven?
Are you driven or are you a drifter?

Speaker 1 (19:59):
That's that's super good and I'm sure we could probably
be here for the next hour and a half dealing
with that. But it just talks about the importance of
number one, listening to this podcast. Number two hanging around
people like Josh, putting yourself in situations he was, He's
relearned a lot of this by going to conferences. Right,
none of this is new, it's just repackaged. It's presented

(20:21):
in a way at a time, Josh, when you were
