Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi everyone.
I'm Regina League and I'm thehost of the Little Pumpkin
Decorators podcast, based herein South Charlotte, and I'm with
the co-owners, Christine Daviesand Ashley Bunn.
Welcome, ladies.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
This is so fun.
I feel like you know we'rereally getting an idea of who
you are, what you're passionateabout, you know in the last one.
But let's today talk aboutbuilding your team, because I
know in the first episode wetouched on the moms.
It's what inspired you to startthis and it's you know, your
(00:37):
way of.
I don't know.
It almost feels like givingback.
You know, having these momsinvolved very community-like.
So which one of you wants totalk about building this team,
who they are and who's a goodfit?
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Well, I'll take
building this team right.
So for us, when we've started, you know, figuring out the
business and you know what wewanted to get out of this year
and um and growing our you know, last year we were in business
for about three weeks.
Um, this time around we've hadthe whole year to really think
(01:14):
it through and and what's reallyimportant for us and what it
means to grow in the community.
And for me and I think forAshley as well it was all about
how we can create sustainableopportunities for other moms
like us.
Have a creative outlet, have anopportunity to make some money
(01:36):
for their family.
If it's, you know, it's rightbefore Christmas.
So if it's, you know, they canget out and do 10 porches while
their kids are in preschool.
(01:58):
So if it's, you know, they canget out and do 10 porches while
their kids are in preschool andthen they're able to go on a
special trip like take the kidsskiing or, you know, buy a
special bicycle that one oftheir kids has been wanting, or
just have that extra to do somereally fun stuff during the
holidays.
That just really made meant alot to me to be able to to share
the pumpkin pie, um, with othermoms like us.
So we've been really thinkingthrough, like, how we would
structure that in terms ofscheduling, um, you know our our
eight weeks of deliveries andyou know when we'll reach out to
(02:20):
our contractors, the other momsthat we want to bring on our
team, and allowing them to kindof pick and choose what works in
their schedule based on thedelivery, the delivery schedule
that we kind of put together.
So it was really important forus to to have that as part of
our, our team model to be ableto support other moms like us.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
I love that.
So the work schedule, thetimeframe is what?
September until when?
Speaker 3 (02:49):
We will be delivering
pumpkins starting September
22nd and we'll go throughOctober, so, leading right up
until Halloween, you can haveyour porch ready to go for the
trick-or-treaters.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Fun, fun.
And the party you're going tohave to have now?
Yes, exactly.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yeah.
So who is a good fit for thetrick-or-treaters?
Speaker 1 (03:05):
fun, fun and the
party you're gonna have to have
now?
Yes, exactly yeah.
So who is a good fit?
Obviously, you know it soundslike moms who want the extra
money, but tell us a little bitmore about them, what you're
looking for so we're looking formoms who are creative.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Uh, you know, if
you're the mom who decorates for
all the holidays, you're alwaysshopping at home decor stores.
You're maybe you have abackground in design.
You really want to make a housecomfortable and joyful and
happy.
You're extremely detailoriented.
Um, you know that's a big pieceBecause even though they're
(03:46):
pumpkins, I mean, you really cancreate like beautiful works of
art with them.
So very detail-oriented.
And then the ability to carryand lift heavy pumpkins.
You know I had to use Christinea few times.
You know I had to use Christinea few times.
And then you know someone whois hardworking, someone who
(04:12):
understands.
You know what this means, notjust to little pumpkin
decorators but to the clients, the families that were
decorating their homes.
So just understanding thatcommitment.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Yeah, there's
somewhat a physical aspect to
this job, so being able to dothose things, yes, yes, I've got
to start my workouts here.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
I used to own a
garden center and I mean I was
lifting 50 pounds all day long, and what are you doing?
Speaker 1 (04:47):
in um september,
october well, maybe more
podcasts, yeah.
So tell us your your mostcreative porch you guys or
unique porch you've ever done.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
I think it would have
to be the Eastover house, right
Ashley?
Yes the one that we do atLincoln.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Ferguson.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yes, that was a
special request.
I'll let you talk about that.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
She wanted very
dark-hued, very unique textured
pumpkins and gourds, and gourds, and gourds.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
It's kind of like an
Eastern kind of like an Eastern
European.
What the pumpkins that have thebumps on them?
Speaker 2 (05:35):
all that?
Yes, like the bumpy ones.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
And the ones that
have like a lot of different
colors on one pumpkin, so kindof like the Eastern European or
like a European look, but moredark.
And she wanted vines.
So we were able to get thecraziest looking pumpkins and
gourds and we were working withan event planner, lindsay
(06:00):
Ferguson Events, so she got thevines and we weave them in
throughout the pumpkin displayand the client came out and she
was like oh, where did you findthese pumpkins?
Like she didn't think that wewere gonna be able.
I don't know.
She just was very happy withthe look.
(06:21):
She was having Thanksgiving, some family from overseas, and
so she just wanted a verynon-traditional look, uh,
compared to like Thanksgiving inthe U S.
So so that one was so fun.
We and then our girls helped usremove the pumpkins and it was
so cute to see like our twoyoungest that are the same age
(06:42):
and they go to the same school,um, running around the yard, you
know, helping us pick up thepumpkins and and I love that.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
You must have good
sources to be able to do that.
So you're not going to thelocal grocery store and buying
pumpkins, obviously no no, I getit we.
We try to stay.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Oh, go ahead Sorry.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
No.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
I was going to say we
try to.
We're sourcing everythinglocally and within North
Carolina.
So we're working with NorthCarolina farmers and North
Carolina local, local pumpkin,local pumpkin.
(07:27):
Well, union County Market wasone that we worked with last
year and so they were able tokind of help us with sourcing
for that particular one.
But yeah, this year we'resourcing from all local North
Carolina farms and we've spent alot of time working out the
logistics, because this timewe're going to be bringing in
our own pumpkins that we'regoing to be selecting, which is
a big you know, big step forthis year's season.
(07:48):
So I'm very excited about that.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
That was the most
unique.
Was it also the most popularporch?
Speaker 2 (07:55):
design, so that one
was also unique and she was a
little skeptical.
She wanted, like, our tinypackage and she had a grand
porch.
So, um, she did trust us andlet us do what we thought was
best, and she was so happy withthe, the look, and we did add
hay.
She wasn't on board with hay atfirst, um, but she did trust us
(08:19):
and she was very happy.
Um, actually, you know, on ourinstagram page, the most popular
, or the one, the, the postthat's gotten like the most
likes is, um, it's a home thatwe did a pumpkin mini, but the
stairs were skinny, so theyweren't.
They were like a couple feetlong.
Um, and they had topiaries andso, and, and she wanted a
(08:42):
vibrant look and I guess justthe way the colors came together
on this like small little porchjust caught a lot of attention
and you know, one of thepumpkins is looked like a star.
Her daughter is huge in dance, like she's just, she's a star.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
So when I saw that
pumpkin.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
I was like oh, that's
, that's kind of that's right
there for Madison.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
So wow, that is a
truly customized design, then.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Yeah, that was a fun
one.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
What does it mean to
you guys to support and hire
local moms, Whichever one of you, maybe both of you?
You start with Christine.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Well, it means the
most to to me, I think, of the
whole business.
I think that's um the thingthat really, other than like the
problem solving and puttingtogether the business and like
all the time that I get to spendwith one of my best friends
growing the business and um theability to hire moms and give
this creative outlet for othermoms in the area, just it means
(09:46):
the most.
I'm super excited and I can'twait to do the training with
them and get them LPD t-shirtsto wear when they're delivering
and see pictures of them withtheir kids bringing joy, like
what we got to experience lastyear.
I just feel like it's it justthat, yeah, that really just is
the best part of it.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Ashley, how about you
?
Speaker 2 (10:09):
um, yes, you know,
ditto to what Christine said I
you know, when I quit working, II kind of struggle was like oh,
like what am I gonna do now?
Speaker 1 (10:21):
changes too yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
And then it's like oh
, I've always contributed, like
financially, but like I don't, Ijust want to just do mom.
So I think, just finding likethis perfect little balance to
know if you're kind of in thatsituation and you want to do
something and you want tocontribute, you can, you know,
do this a little bit of the year.
It's, it's not a big commitment, it's on your terms, um, but uh
(10:46):
, I, I, my also favorite part isthe like, the reveal, like when
they come out and they're likeI, I mean, they're just so happy
.
And then I'm just so surprised, you know, because I'm like, oh
okay, I don't know, they justseem to it just sparks so much
joy and I think it reallyenhances their season.
And you know, fall is such abeautiful time of year and then
(11:08):
it leads into Christmas, and soit's just a really nice feeling,
beautiful time of year, andthen it leads into Christmas,
and so it's just a really nicefeeling.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
Well, I love that you
have a reveal, but I never even
dawned on me that you know youwould say, okay, stay inside, go
away and then come back, and soyou can do your thing.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
Yeah, Well, I I think
I mean it doesn't always work
out that there is a reveal, because sometimes, like our
clients, like you, don't need tobe home for us to come and
deliver your, your pumpkins onyour porch, right?
This is something that we cando.
We'll give you a notice thatwe're, we're coming within this
timeframe If you're at work orwhatever.
You know, that's fine too, butthere is a reveal when, if they
pull up from when they get homefrom work and they see their
porch, they're like, oh my gosh, look at this curb appeal.
(11:52):
Like I am now ready.
I think you know that's justwhenever it kind of happens in
the process, right, For everyclient's a little different.
But one of the things that'samazing is we had so many people
tell us last year that theirhusbands loved it, Like they
were just like, oh my gosh, likeit was so surprising that the
(12:16):
husband and then the husbandswere a couple of them were like
we're doing our family photos.
This is, you know, like I'm thetalk of the town, like kind of
they just loved it.
So that was something that waskind of surprising.
But but yeah, for us we candeliver pumpkins anytime a day.
Um, you don't need to be there,we'll let you know when we're
going to be there.
(12:36):
Um, just you know, just so youknow.
But, um, we're completelyoutside and out of your hair.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Yes, that's a unique
thing is um, which, which I like
being busy.
You know, like everyone, we'rebusy, so you don't have to be
there.
Uh, we let you know, uh, vialike message.
We're here busy.
You know, like everyone, we'rebusy, so you don't have to be
there.
Uh, we let you know, uh, vialike message.
We're here and you know nowwe're finished and then pictures
, um, so you know, theinvolvement is is none if you
(13:03):
want it to be, or you can sitout in a chair and watch us.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
You know, like right
you don't have to be there I was
just thinking hey, ladies, tellyour husband for a gift, you
want a package.
Yeah, yeah, if we got malelisteners, surprise them.
That is so unique, that wouldbe super, super fun.
So back to building your team.
Are you already working on thisfall's team?
Speaker 3 (13:28):
yes.
So on our website there's ajoin join our team tab and the
little hamburger, three lines, and then we would love you to
just click that, fill out someinformation.
It's really you know, it's just, I think it's name, email,
contact details, a little bitabout yourself, a little bit
(13:49):
about yourself, and then we'llbe in touch because we, we are
really looking forward to havinga big season.
We're going to need help.
It's we're hoping that it'sgoing to be way more than Ashley
and I can handle and we need,we need these moms and help us.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
Yes, we need a
village, exactly, I love it.
I've just got this gut feeling.
You guys have huge plans forthis business.
So you know, if you want toshare anything or, uh, you know,
drift on us that now would bethe time there's more to come.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
We're working on more
things.
There are other seasons in theyear there are.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
There really are, in
fact.
