Inspired by different thoughts that arise contemplating the following question: How does my understanding of my body as a "temple of the Holy Spirit" which is not owned, but was bought at a price that I can never begin to repay.
Obviously, John 3:16 is one of many verses that come to mind. The temple is not owned, but something I get to use and was bought at a price.
This vessel of bone and blood,
Not mine to squander, man ...
... purchased At a price beyond my understanding!
Dig it!
My flesh—temporary residence
Of something cosmic...
Something eternal.
The temple stands— Not built by human hands, Not owned through human deeds. A sacred loan from the divine landlord Who paid the mortgage in full.
How square to think I'm free When I've been bought... Yet how utterly free indeed When I realize what bought me.
This body— Clay spun on the potter's wheel, Temporary dig for the eternal beatnik spirit, On loan from the Great Hipster Above.
Crazy, man!
To be both vessel and tenant, Both temple and worshipper, Both owned and eternally free.
So what's the scene? If this body's not my pad, But a temple purchased at the highest price, Then who am I to trash what isn't mine? Who am I to desecrate what's holy?
The paradox hangs in smoke-filled air: The more I surrender ownership, The more I find true freedom, baby. The divine transaction—my liberation.
Let's sing some more, man!
