The Musings of a Rabbi: Jewish Wisdom for Today’s World rabbisandra.substack.com
This week we read Shoftim, and right at the center of the portion comes one of the most powerful imperatives in all of Torah: Tzedek, tzedek tirdof — “Justice, justice shall you pursue.”
The repetition is intentional. The rabbis remind us that the Torah never wastes a word. Justice must be pursued not once, not occasionally, but relentlessly — until it takes root in the world.

It’s a spiritual wake-up call. Think of it like an alarm clock for the soul.
That month is called Elul.
Elul comes right before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur—the holiest days of the Jewish year. Instead of just showing up to synagogue and hoping for the best, our tradition says: prepare your heart. Transformation doesn’t happen in an instant. It takes intention, practice, and time. Elul gives us that time.
This month is about teshuva, a word often translated as “repentance” but more accurately meaning “return....

I made this video to expand a little and talk about what I wrote in Losing a Generation…
Also, please forgive Stella’s snoring in the background.
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
So last week I wrote a Substack piece titled it basically Losing a Generation. And I'll add it here, and I want to talk about it a little bit in this video, because it's gotten a lot of attention. Um, and in the essay, I say we are losing a generation of Jewish people, and...
The Cloud is a guiding force for the Israelites and for all of us
On November 1, 2018 I gave a talk on Authentic Identities at Elon University, where I serve as the Campus Rabbi. The talk was shortly after the horrible events in Kentucky and Pittsburgh. I shared my story and journey of becoming a Jew and a rabbi. I talked about the racism I face in the Jewish community, antisemitism and our current political rhetoric. I hope you enjoy this special episode.
In honor of Rosh Hodesh. I am dedicating this week's Minutes of Torah to all the women who have felt silenced
Welcome to Episode 59 of Hineni Jewish Prayer. Today we will focus on the prayer that is often called the bathroom blessing. Thanking God for allowing one to do their business in the morning. I don't see this blessing as simple a bathroom blessing. I see it as a blessing thanking God for creating me exactly who I am

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
