OK Solberg (00:00):
I wanna again welcome you to the 4:05 Coffee
Break. Guys, new week. Get you acup of coffee. You know the
routine. Glass iced tea, bottleof water, blah blah blah.
Why is he always do that? Let'ssee what's happening. Spring
wheat $5.11 a bushel. It's goingdown. Harvest is here.
To be honest with you, 550 poundsteer calf are not selling at

(00:22):
this time, so here's the priceof a 946 pound steer calf. $3.32
a pound. Multiply that out, itequates to $3,140.72 I hope to
shout, I'm happy for all y'all.I miss the cattle market, I miss

(00:47):
the cattle business, but I'mglad it's doing well. Put your
hog in Iowa, 61¢ a pound, and afat lamb that weighs a 100
pounds will fetch you a dollar97.
But, guys, there's more, muchmore. Okay. I'm gonna start with
a bible passage, and it's myfavorite passage from the book

(01:07):
of Proverbs. Ready? Listen now.
Two things I ask of you. Denythem not to me before I die.
Remove far from me falsehoodsand lying. Give me neither
poverty nor riches. Proverbs 30verses seven and eight.
Did you hear it? Two things onlydo I want. I don't wanna be a

(01:32):
liar, so people trust me. And Idon't want too much or too
little. Sometimes, guys, Iwonder if we have too much.
I'm not sure, but I'm prettysure we border on having too
much. There's nothing, nothinglike an empty stomach or an

(01:56):
empty checkbook to motivate aperson to do things. I grew up
in a time when we didn't havetoo much, but we had enough. I
didn't ever remember, everremember going hungry. There was
always something to eat, but wecertainly didn't have a surplus
of money, and because of that,we did hands on things.

(02:18):
I grew up when there was a liveband at all the dances because
kids made their own garagebands. Now remember, I couldn't
go to dances, but that doesn'tmean I didn't know there were
live bands there. I peaked in atime or two. Kids who love music
got together with their friendsand put a band together in their

(02:38):
garage. And yes, we grew up withgreat music and that too was a
motivator.
Then you've heard me tell overand over about the cars, from
the '56 Chevy Bel Air to the '55Ford Thunderbird. Oh, the list
includes the Ford Mustang andthe Chevy Impala and Chevelle.

(03:01):
The Dodge Charger to the PontiacGTO, too many to mention. But I
want you to picture this in yourmind's eye. Back in the nineteen
seventies, right here in goodold Malta, Montana, right here
in Malta, there was a guy I knowwho had a 1964 GTO, and he had a

(03:24):
hankering to use the 389 enginefrom the GTO and install it in a
1956 Chevy two door hardtop.
Now what was the verse I shared?Didn't it say, give me neither
poverty nor riches? What a greatthing to not have riches. Well,

(03:44):
the guy in Malta wanted toinstall that 389 into his 1956
Chevy two door hardtop. Sowhat'd he do?
Did he hire a mechanic? No,sirree, Bob. He borrowed a
cherry picker from a friend herein town and in front of his
house, not in his garage, infront of his house on the

(04:06):
streets in Malta, Montana. Withthat cherry picker, he pulled
out the engine and transmissionfrom the '64 GTO and swapped it
into the '56 Chevy. Guys, therewere shade tree mechanics
everywhere.
Oh, we can do it ourselves. Now,when's the last time you saw a

(04:26):
cherry picker holding an engineand transmission as it drove the
streets of Malta, Montana? And Iknow, us old guys, our
grandparents probably said thesame thing about us. They just
drive those cars and never climbinto the saddle and break a
bronc anymore. I understand thattimes change.

(04:47):
Isn't it written in theJefferson Memorial in
Washington, D. C. Where it says,I'm not an advocate for frequent
changes in laws andconstitutions, but laws and
institutions must go hand inhand with the progress of the
human mind. As that becomes moredeveloped, more enlightened, as

(05:09):
new discoveries are made, newtruths discovered, and manners
and opinions change, well, withthe change of circumstances,
institutions must advance alsoto keep pace with the times. We
might as well require a man towear still the coat which fitted
him when a boy has civilizedsociety to remain ever under the

(05:34):
regime of their barbarousancestors, end of quote.
Now, you might think I'm crazy. You might think I made a big
jump to go from a cherry pickerin the streets of Malta to a
quote in the Jefferson Memorial. But I see a huge correlation. We
all know changes will come. They're before us every day, and

(05:58):
with the changes, we mustchange.
Yet, I still miss some of thehands on stuff that used to
happen. I'm not sure, but I'mpretty sure it's because we have
become too fat and sassy. Justsaying. So after you're done
listening to this episode, wouldsomeone please, would someone

(06:21):
please put their cherry pickerout on the street just to make
Orvin happy? So until next time,as you go out there, remember
now, don't be bitter.
