SPEAKER_00 (00:00):
Hey, OBM besties.
Welcome back to the OBM show.
I'm Sarah Noquette, and todaywe're talking about how to
market yourself as an OBMwithout feeling salesy.
And let's be honest, most of ushate talking about ourselves.
I know I definitely did when Ifirst started, but here is the
absolute irony.

(00:20):
The less I talked, the moreclients wanted to work with me.
The biggest shift in how Imarket myself and honestly how I
run my business came when Irealized that being an OBM...
isn't about me at all.
It's really about them, thebusiness owner, the teams, their
operations.
So in today's episode, I'mbreaking down how you can market

(00:43):
yourself without feeling likeyou're selling yourself, the art
of asking the right questions, and why my clients love me the
most when I say the least, andhow the book The Coaching Habit
transformed how I run salescalls, and my favorite OBM hack,
channeling your alter ego.
Yes, we are talking aboutBeyonce's Sasha Fierce and how

(01:10):
you, my friends, can create yourown online business manager
persona.
Because let's be honest,marketing isn't about shouting
louder.
It's about leading withconfidence and leaving the
business better than how wefound it.
Let's dive in.
Welcome to the OBM Show, thepodcast that pulls back the

(01:31):
curtain on what it really takesto thrive as an online business
manager and help businessesscale without burning out.
I'm your host, Sarah Noked, agency owner, OBM mentor, and
founder of OBM School.
I've been working in the backend of online businesses since
2009, building systems, managingremote teams, and mentoring OBMs

(01:54):
who make businesses run likeclockwork.
Now, I've seen what works, whatdoesn't, and the messy middle
that no one talks about.
Here, we get real about thetools, strategies, and stories
that drive sustainable success, plus the tech mishaps, growing
pains, and lessons learned alongthe way.

(02:15):
If you're ready to stop spinningyour wheels, step into your
leadership role, and see whatactually happens behind the
scenes of thriving businesses, you're in the right place.
Let's get started.
Let's get started.
Okay, so let's talk about whymarketing feels so uncomfortable
for so many online businessmanagers.

(02:36):
Now, we go into this workbecause we love solving problems
and bringing order to chaos.
But suddenly, when it comes tomarketing ourselves, we feel
like we somehow have to convincepeople to hire us.
And that is where the discomfortcomes in.
And if you've been in thisposition, you know exactly what
I'm talking about.
But here's the thing.

(02:57):
Marketing is not...
about proving your value.
It's simply about demonstratingleadership.
And leadership isn't abouttalking more.
It's about listening better.
Now, I learned this from TheCoaching Habit by Michael
Bungay-Stanier, which completelychanged how I approached

(03:17):
everything in my business, including the sales calls,
client relationships, the way Imanage my team, the way I
position myself online, how Ieven deal with my children.
This is fantastic book.
And one of the biggest takeawaysfrom this book is that great
leaders ask better questions.

(03:39):
So instead of trying to pitchyourself in the next scenario
where maybe you are on a salescall, maybe you're at a
conference, maybe you're at somenetworking thing, when a client
or a I just feel like mybusiness is a mess.
Instead of immediately offeringsolutions, ask a question.

(04:01):
What would it look like if itweren't a mess?
Okay, I just want to let thatsink in for a second because it
really transforms how you lead, how you speak, how you control
the conversation.
Because if there's one thingthat I know about sales at a

(04:21):
very baseline is that whoever isasking the questions is the one
in control.
So here's another one.
When a client says to me orsomeone says to me, I need help
managing my team.
I ask this question, what's thebiggest challenge you're facing

(04:41):
with them right now?
Okay, and then I think anotherimportant thing to mention here
is that it's really important togive your client time to speak,
to answer those questions.
Now, here's another one for you.
When a business owner isoverwhelmed with operations,
which naturally happens, you canask the question, And this is

(05:06):
something that I love asking inthe discovery call.
If I took something off yourplate today that would give you
relief, what would it be?
Because here's the thing.
When you ask the rightquestions, the client sells
themselves on hiring you.
Yes.
In fact, the client sellsthemselves on hiring you.

(05:29):
And here's the best part.
The client feels heard.
They feel understood and alreadysee you as the leader they need.
And like the truth be told inthis whole sort of conundrum of
us serving our clients, trust issuch an important aspect.
It's holds it all together, especially at the beginning.

(05:51):
And when you are askingquestions, the client feels
heard and understood, and theysee you as a leader.
They see you as an equalpartner.
They see you as somebody who canreally help them get what they
need out of their business, which is probably more time.
Now, marketing really stopsfeeling salesy when you stop

(06:12):
talking at people.
And I know because...
I do this a lot in life, and Iactually learned this.
My husband speaks Hebrew.
And I obviously speak English.
And when we first startedconnecting, conversation was
difficult for us.
And I found that I really neededto slow down and listen.

(06:35):
And I really feel like that wassort of the secret to our
success as a couple is becauseit really forced me to slow
down, ask questions, listenpatiently.
Because when you ask the rightquestions, they feel heard,
right?

UNKNOWN (06:51):
Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 (06:52):
And you really have to start leading them through
these conversations.
So let's talk a little bit aboutthe next piece for me, and it
has to do with Beyonce.
Now, I love Beyonce.
She's definitely not one of myfavorite singers of all time,
but you cannot just deny thatshe is one of the most powerful,
the most poised, and reallycommanding performers of our

(07:15):
time.
And one of the interestingthings I learned actually about
Beyonce is was that earlier inher career, or really early on
in her career, she created thispersona called Sasha Fierce.
It is an alter ego that hashelped her step into a bolder,
more confident, and morepowerful version of herself when

(07:37):
she was on stage.
Now, as online businessmanagers, as OBMs, we too need
our own Sasha Fierce alter egowhen it comes to marketing,
visibility, and stepping in toleadership.
So this was a huge, huge thingfor me.
Stepping into my OBM alter egoreally changed everything.

(08:00):
I went from feeling ultimatelynervous about marketing myself,
about showing up confidently insales calls, and especially on
social media because I was nevera social person.
And so when I think about socialmedia, I think about it really

(08:20):
highlighting this OBM alter egothat is me.
So for me, stepping into my OBMalter ego changed everything.
And no, I didn't give it somesexy name like Sasha Fierce.
But what I did do is I went fromfeeling nervous about marketing
myself to showing up moreconfidently.

(08:42):
So if you're struggling withvisibility...
and maybe you're an introvertedperson like myself, I want you
to ask yourself, what version doI need to be when I'm leading a
team, when I'm managing alaunch, when I'm organizing
operations?
And also, for the record, if youare not there yet, I want you to

(09:04):
think about what that feeling isgoing to feel like.
when you do get there.
So I want you to close your eyesand imagine if I were leading my
client, if I were leading theirteam, how would I feel inside in
my, you know, most powerful me,you know?
And I really invite you to sitwith this.

(09:26):
This is the hardest part aboutbeing an entrepreneur and is
that there are highs and lows.
And you don't always feel likethe most powerful you.
But if you can channel this, andif you can start to feel it,
it's going to really help you inways that I can honestly say

(09:48):
have exponentially changed how Ido business.
Because realizing that business, being an entrepreneur,
especially being a servicesupport professional like
ourselves, is a personal growthjourney.
And when you realize and youmake that connection, and
honestly, sometimes I can say itand you're still not going to

(10:09):
feel it, but maybe you've beenin business and you're listening
to this podcast and you're like, wait a second, I get it now.
This is a personal growthjourney for me.
And, you know, when I'mstruggling with being in my
powerful zone of genius, it'susually because I feel insecure
or maybe it's like things thatcome up from the past.
But I really want you to thinkabout that version of yourself

(10:32):
that you need to be when whenyou're leading a team and just
sit and think about it.
If you don't, if you can'tactually put it into words,
which is not uncommon, thinkabout just the feeling that
you're going to feel.
And then from there, think abouthow would that version of me
talk?
How would that version of meshow up?

(10:54):
How would that version of meengage with potential clients?
Okay, are you feeling it yet?
I am.
And then take it to that onestep, that one scary little
extra step, and think about whatdoes my OBM persona look like on

(11:14):
social media, on my website, andmy discovery calls, right?
Maybe your OBM alter ego iscalled the CEO whisperer.
I actually think we have an OBMin our community, by the way,
that goes by that.
So no, you cannot take that as abusiness name.
It might be the calm in thechaos.

(11:35):
It might be something like thestrategic fixer.
I don't know.
You can spend some time onChatGPT discussing this with
yourself, but don't go down toomuch of a rabbit hole.
It should just be something thatreally gives you that oomph to
really overcome the some ofthese things that knock us down

(11:56):
because we're so used to beingin service of other people,
right?
So serve yourself with this, with this persona.
Now, if you're ready to takeyour online business manager
business to the next level, don't miss OBM Week happening

Now, the next piece aboutmarketing yourself actually is
shifting from proving yourselfto positioning.
And this is something that Ireally, really love because I

(12:39):
know that in the beginning whenI first started, I was like the
Jane of all trades, right?
Like I was a yes woman.
And one of the most powerfulmarketing moves that I made in
my business was that realizingthat clients don't need to hear
me talk.
They really need to feelunderstood, right?

(13:00):
Okay, and so this really helpedme because now I'm like less
concerned about proving my worthas a service support
professional.
Like I'm proficient in this, Ican do that, so on and so forth.
Maybe you're even like compilinga list of like all the things
you're good at.
But one of the most powerfulmoves that I made Realizing the

(13:25):
less I spoke, the more myclients trusted me.
And this really goes back towhat I was talking about at the
beginning by really being ableto ask those right questions.
So again, this book, TheCoaching Habit, is literally
always on my desk.
I reference it all the time.
We have tons of other books inour OBM School book list.

(13:47):
You can grab those atobmschool.com forward slash read
because we are big readers andI've got all my favorite books
there.
But I would say that this oneis, you know, one that I
actually like reference a lot.
So that's why I think it'spractical.
I'm a practical gal.
I really like this whole thingand this whole reason for

(14:09):
building my marketing and salesstrategy around asking people
better questions, not givingmore answers, not giving more
strategy.
This really reminds me of thatsales training that we do inside
of OBM School where You know, Italk a lot about asking
questions and not getting on asales conversation and throwing

(14:31):
tactics, throwing strategy, spending 45 minutes to an hour
delivering an over-the-top salescall where you've just literally
given away the family farm tothe client and now they've
ghosted you, right?
Why have they ghosted you?
Because they're feelingoverwhelmed.
They're not feeling trusting.
They're not feeling like youunderstand them.

(14:53):
They've just felt like they'vebeen spoken to and thrown
strategies at.
And, you know, as an OBM, whichis different from other service
support professionals, but as anOBM, you know, we have a certain
onboarding philosophy, right?
You know, you're getting in tomanage.
You need to know the funnels andthe culture and a lot of things.
So you really do need to havethe client feel understood,

(15:19):
okay?
So the less I spoke, the more myclients trust me.
And this is why I build mymarketing and sales strategy
around asking questions, notgiving more answers.
I also really work it by showingup consistently and confidently.
And this is even when I don'tfeel like it.
And this means for me...

(15:41):
This is where, you know, theSarah persona kind of comes in
or this OBM persona of liketreating my business like as if
it were a client's business.
This is also part of thatpersona for me, right?
Because, you know, again, service support professional,
we're at the sort of beck andcall of other people.
We're at service to others.
I don't necessarily prioritizemy own business.

(16:03):
But Showing up confidently andconsistently means that my
business is also on my roster.
That means that I am putting outcontent regularly.
That means that even if I feelnot so great, which I've gone
through a lot over the lastcouple of months.
My mom was in and out of thehospital.
I could have come up with agadrillion excuses not to record

(16:29):
this podcast.
But showing up consistently...
even when I don't feel like it,speaks to that strong persona,
that strong need to just Reallyshow up, okay?
And it helps me to beconsistent.
Now, if you're ready to takeyour online business manager
