James Rapine. We're the Lockdown Bengalspodcast on the Lockdown Podcast Network,

this program and anybody to get yourpodcast, where you can also follow and
be part of that first listening club. Be part of that every day group
of listeners that may have heard theBilly Anderson interview earlier this week, the

(01:07):
Mike santaggative breakdown of the Bengals rookies, last week, the film takeaways,
and today we're going to get intosome more offseason program offseason practice observations.
The biggest one today, James,is that Tyler Boyd number three of the
Big three of the Bengals wide receivers, although the first chronologically was back in

(01:30):
Cincinnati for practices, and that makesalmost everybody outside of Jonah Williams, who's
obviously not going to show up foranything optional And who am I forgetting there's
an injured player who's not there.Cheetah wasn't there today, but he's been.
He's been there for a lot ofit. He just wasn't on the

(01:51):
field today, so he might haveeven been at the facility, but wasn't
on Tuesday. But Tyler Boyd backout there running routes with all the Bengals
receivers, meeting Charlie Jones, perhapsfor the first time. Correct, yep,
Okay, So a lot of veteranthese stuff happening there with Tyler Boyd's
returned with with Charlie Jones, andwith getting back with Joe Byrne, all

(02:14):
those things. And first things first, I think a lot of people were
wondering where Tyler Boyd was. Andhe had never missed voluntary that I can
remember voluntary workouts and during the offseason, and certainly not in recent years,
and so some wondered, is hedisgruntled as he bothered, is he actually
it's as simple as and he describedit his family time. But it sounds

(02:37):
like he was supporting his daughter asshe went through some different dance competitions,
and I'm sure there was some travelassociated with that, and you just you
look at it and it's like, yeah, probably not going to be able
to fit that in with all thevoluntary stuff that the Bengals had. So
he looked good, He looked likehe was in shape. I certainly excited

(02:57):
talking to him in the locker roomafter practice to be back. He couldn't
help but smile, and from multipletimes where I just think he was smiling
as he was answering, just becausehe was happy to be back and happy
to be in that locker room. And it's a fun place where a lot
of these guys are happy to bethere. So I think he was certainly
one of them. And you're right, he met Charlie Jones for the first

(03:19):
time, was asked about Charlie Jonesand his contract and all of those things
which we can dive into. ButTyler Boyd was back, and he was
never unhappy in Cincinnati or anything likethat. It just had to do with
some family time. Was that athing? Was that was that something that
people were speculating about. It wasabout to start being a thing. And

(03:44):
I've had multiple people tweet me,you know a little things like why isn't
Boyd here? I know we've hadsome comments on YouTube. I don't think
it was that big because most peopleunderstood, like Trandrick's and miss voluntary last
year, like some guys just missIt's okay. They things come up,
and especially Tyler stage of his lifewhere he's not twenty one twenty two anymore,
Like he has a daughter and heyou know, he has a family

(04:05):
and stuff. I get it tookup as much family time as possible.
And he looked good by the way, got plenty pass from Joe Burrow.
I think he's in good shape.I think he's ready to go. Yeah.
There are a few themes, oneof which was the camaraderie of the
locker room that came through Zach Taylor'spress room when he was talking about Tyler
Boyd when he was talking about whathe's looking for in these offseason optional practices,

(04:28):
something that Tyler Boyd talked about asfar as you know, why he
came back as he was asked aboutit. You know, part of it
was he wanted to be with hisguys. He talked a lot about,
you know, love the family time, love spending time with his family,
but wanted to get back with histeammates. And that's the kind of teammate
that Tyler Boyd has been. That'sthe kind of guy that Boyd has been

(04:51):
under the Zach Taylor coaching regime entirelyreally, and Taylor talked about that when
he was talking about Boyd and whyhe sent him out for the playoff coin
toss and all those things as anotherexample one of those guys doing everything the
right way. Referred to it wasasked about, you know, Boyd's influence
on Jamar Chase and Tee Higgins cominginto the league, and when he was

(05:13):
asked about Charlie Jones and the contractsituation, I thought he handled it well.
You know, he's not really lookingahead for another extension or at least
in talk about it, and youknow, gave the warning or the caveat
that was like, yeah, itmight not be here forever, but right
now, the Cincinnati Bengalo always bea Cincinnati Bengal and my job is to

(05:34):
help this team be better, andthat role include Charlie Jones being part of
that latest receiver edition that Tyler Boydwill play a part mentoring there's everyone can
benefit from Tyler Boyd playing well thisyear, and I think that that's is

(05:55):
as simple as it can be.Yeah, he's in a contract year,
this might be his last as aBengal. Charlie Jones might also stink at
football or get hurt or eight otherthings happened. And I'm not wishing injury
on anyone, but there's a lotof things that could happen where the Bengals
look at it and say, oh, well, maybe we do keep Tyler
right. The tea thing is undetermined, Like there's just there's so many things

(06:16):
that could play out. And whileit's it's real easy to say, well,
Jones's Boy's replacement and all of thosethings, and I get it,
I could see the path to that, but that's one of many paths.
And I don't think Tyler has lethis mind wander too much and just to
go back to his mindset. Iremember before he had his breakout season,

(06:38):
and so I believe that was twentyeighteen when he really got in the in
the groove and showed what he couldbe in the NFL. And he ended
twenty seventeen well with that walk offtouchdown against the Ravens. But that season
in twenty seventeen, I remember talkingto him and he's like, if I
don't shine here, I'm gonna shinesomewhere, and he's just he's always had

(06:59):
that confidence, that mindset. SoI just think he assumes, let's go
win a ring in Cincinnati, andif they want me back and we can
find a deal, that's great.If not, let's bring the Bengals a
ring this year and I'll do withVon Bell and Jesse Bates and Hayden Hurst
and all of these guys did thispast March, which was get paid.
So if he plays well, theBengals are probably playing well on offense.

(07:23):
And that's the other thing that stoodout to me Jake is he mentioned we've
talked our every day ER's know howbig I am on points and getting to
thirty and I've set that bar thepast two years. He asked about his
expectations and he mentioned thirty thirty fiveforty, which I love. My bar
will still be that thirty point markbecause I think you can lead the NFL.

(07:46):
I'm scoring if you get there, and that should be the expectation for
this offense is to be the NFL'sbest offense. But he mentioned that thirty
point mark as well, so Ijust want to share that with our listeners.
Good stuff, and of course backworking with Joe Burrow and the rest
of these wide receivers. And thereare some interesting noteworthy takeaways that we'll get

(08:09):
to in just a minute talking about, you know what some of this stuff
has looked like, what the Bengalsseemed to be emphasizing, at least on
the offensive side of the ball, where a lot of the clips have been
shared on Twitter. We'll get intothat coming up next. Last thought for
me and Tyler Boyd, just justin terms of the contract and everything,
one of the great examples of ahomegrown player for the Cincinnati Bengals, You're

(08:31):
right, broke out in twenty eighteen. That was the correct year, just
to verify that, not that anyonehad had those doubts, but came in
young, played through age twenty ninein Cincinnati. At least we'll see if
he gets an extension beyond that,a third contract from this team and his
age thirty season, those will bebreaking from the norm, but like you

(08:54):
said, James, there's so manythings that can happen. We didn't expect
your main Pratt to be back thisoffseason. As another example, that's kind
of similar where things would always goaccording to plant and sometimes you need to
pivot and this Bengals front office alwaysready to do that. And is there
a pivot coming on offense, James, or is it just you know,
normal offseason practice work. We'll getinto some of the most noteworthy practice observations

(09:16):

the Lockdown podcast network your team everyday. Let's have into some practice observations

(10:52):
next, James, and I'm assumingthat your practice observation is going to lead
off with something real to I don'tknow. It couldn't possibly be Joe Burrow
the wide receivers. Are you gonnasurprise me? You gonna? Well,
what do you got? Let's let'ssee what your first observation is. I
know what one of the big onesis for me, but I want to

(11:13):
know if you were there in person. But what the biggest takeaway for you
was today? Well, first thingsfirst, having having Boyd back, he's
he's the one who leads to thewide receiver drills and so it's, uh,
it was cool to see that againthat it's eighty three there and not
one or five. But so sothat stood out. Like I said,

(11:35):
Boyd looked like he was in goodshape, Jamar catching deep balls from Burrow
te Higgins. But let's get tothe main takeaway because I think it's it's
something you mentioned to me before westarted recording, something I noticed last week.
I think something that people have noticedif you're paying close attention to the
to the clips that have came outthroughout these these offseason workouts. So let's

(11:58):
get to your takeaway because I thinkit is the lead story. Yeah,
I think the most interesting thing tome looking at the clips that have been
posted on Twitter by various Bengals mediamembers, including you, James of course
at practice and doing your video thingis the amount of play action that continues

(12:20):
when the Bengals are repping. Youknow, Joe Burrow throwing to one guy,
Joe Burrow going seven on zero sevenon air almost every clip, if
not literally every clip featuring some sortof play action, and there's some other
things that if you really focus onJoe Burrow's footwork, there are a couple

(12:43):
other things that I find interesting, but the preponderance of play action stuff.
Literally every clip I saw today ofJoe Burrow throwing a pass was some sort
of play action before he threw thepass. And that isn't just today.
That's something that you mentioned last week, James. That's been ongoing for pretty

(13:05):
much every clip we've seen of thisoffense so far in this off season period
where we're getting you know, limitedyou know, work on air, that
sort of stuff. Not too intense, but could this signal change in an
increased emphasis on play action because you'reseeing an under center in Shotgun, you're
seeing a variety of different play actionfootwork, play action reps from Joe Burrow,

(13:30):
and you know, one or twopractices here there, you know,
you kind of note it and moveon. But this is this is consistent,
and maybe it's just what they're doingon you know, the media practices.
Right. It might just be everyTuesday they work on their play action
and it might be as simple asthat, or it might be that it's

(13:50):
a point of emphasis at this pointin the off season. Yeah, I
think it would be nice if itwas a part of the emphasis, just
because if there was a hole,if there was something, you would look
at Joe Burrow and say, youwant to get more comfortable doing this.
It's turning your back to the defense. And I talked about it a little

(14:13):
a little bit last week on thepod, like, if this offensive line
is as good as I expect itto be, hopefully he does get comfortable
doing that. I get it whenyou have the offensive lines that you had
in twenty twenty and twenty twenty oneand even last season at times, especially
if you're coming off of new reconstructionsurgery or appendicitis where it was a pretty

(14:33):
serious surgery that you had to dealwith going into the season. Like all
of those things, There's been abunch of different factors. But he's so
good at so much that that's sortof the missing thing of And not that
it's going to be a huge partof their offense, because I don't necessarily
think it will be, but shouldn'tit be there somewhere where it can potentially

(14:56):
have an impact if needed. Andthe other part to this, they need
to find ways to generate more explosiveplays and so finding different ways to utilize
play action. I think back tothe Chad how many deep balls did Chad
Johnson have from Carson Palmer that we'replay action in the middle of the field,
and that's just something that offense used. And I'm not saying that this

(15:20):
is going to be a huge partof what they do, but it could
be something and you're not the firstone to notice it, and I haven't
asked around. I should have beforewe started recording. I wonder if it's
just tuesdays they work on play action, because it might be that simple.
That said, it's been consistent,so it's certainly worth noting. Do we
get Zach again next week? Wedon't do so you get them from mandatory

(15:43):
minicamp, though perhaps yep, yeah, we'll get if we see it again
next week. OTAs next week,we'll talk about the remainder of the Bengals
offseason schedule here in a little bittoo, because it's interesting. Maybe we'll
get maybe we'll get to ask then, or maybe we'll get to ask before
them. But on the topic ofJoe Burrow and play action and the Bengals

(16:03):
in play action. The top ofthe league last year in terms of play
action use was Atlanta with Marcus MariontaMiami with TWA at forty four percent forty
three percent in those offenses, Sobig big play action offense with Arthur Jones
in Atlanta, big big play actionoffense in the McVay style, Mike McDaniel

(16:27):
offense in Miami. And then theother end of the spectrum is Joe Burrow
and Tom Brady at the bottom ofthe NFL in terms of play action use
at fifteen fifteen and a half percent, roughly equal for both of those guys.
But the Bucks couldn't run the ballat all, right, So that's

(16:49):
that's a big part of it forthem. Yeah, And the other quarterbacks
that are similar Kenny Pickett, AndyDalton, Joe Flacco with the Jets,
Matt Ryan with the Colts, Andout of all those guys that the two
quarterbacks in that list that are goodare Tom Brady and Joe Burrow. So
it's a stylistic thing for sure.It could be limitations of personnel to some

(17:12):
degree, But like you said,James, there's a few ways in which
you would like to see Joe Burrowbe better in play action. He was
less efficient in terms of completion percentageon play action, which you could see
to some extent, but most ofthe good play action passers in the NFL
and the good play action offenses tosee at least a little bit of a

(17:33):
bump in terms of completion percentage interms of explosive plays, and they're not
necessarily getting that a ton with theJoe Burrow play action game, and so
in area where he could perform alittle bit better, especially with relation to
the under center part of things, and there wasn't as much under center work,
but there was a little bit buta weapon that could be low hanging

(17:57):
fruit for this offense as well, especially when you talk about the middle of
the field. And one of thoseplay action reps that you can find a
video of on Twitter is as aplay action shot to the middle of the
field of Tyler Boyd on a deepcrosser, which I think should be thrilling.
Like the idea of getting more deepcrossers into this offense is really fun.

(18:18):
So we'll see if that happens ornot. It could just be a
Tuesday thing, like we've said, but I think it is pretty interesting.
The extent to which the Bengals haveappeared to be working on play action stuff
in this off season program, nodoubt, And like I said, hopefully
that's something that it's one of theholes in their game. You know,
if you want to point out somethingone of the flaws obviously consistency, offensive

(18:41):
line, all of those things. But if the offensive line improves what you
expected to, there should be morewrinkles to help them get to that thirty
plus points per game that I expect, that Tyler Boyd expects, that I
think Zach Taylor expects. So let'sdiscuss a few other things that Zach Taylor
had to say, some more practicetakeaways. Jake mentioned the schedule the Bengals,

(19:03):
Well, they're going to welcome anopponent to town early in the preseason
for more joint practices. We'll seeif there's any helmet swinging. We'll discuss
that and much much more coming upnext. It was win or go home
in Boston on Monday Night in theMiami Heat. Didn't want to go home,
knocking off the Boston Celtics to advanceto the NBA Finals. There was
a team that was mentally tough, ready for the challenge, ready for a

(19:29):
battle. And then there was theBoston Celtics. The Vegas Golden Knights are
headed to the Stanley Cup Final aftertaking Game six in the Western Conference Final
and convincing fashion. This time,We're not here just to be here.
I felt like season one we werecool about being here. But you know,
it feels like the mission is notover us and Liam Hendricks returned to
the mound for the Chicago White Soxafter a battle with non Hodgkins lymphoma.

(19:52):
Welcome back Liam Hendricks emotional moment. They didn't even go to commercial break when
he came into the game out ofthe dugout. For more on these stories,
check out new episodes of Locked onHeat, Locked On Golden Knights,
and Locked on White Sox, allfree available wherever you get podcast. One

(20:15):
of the big differences in this year'sjoint practice should be that there's no Super
Bowl history between these teams. TheGreen Bay Packers will be the team for
that joint practice. We'll talk aboutthat a little bit, as well any
other practice takeaways before we dive intothe Taylor Press or other comments and the
rest of the Bengals offseason schedule. Here for the next couple of weeks that

(20:37):
you noticed, you know, JacksonCarmen continuing to work as a number one
right tackle right now with Elsie stillrehabbing and Enjoinah Williams out there. That
was a note some special teams workany Brad Robbins notes today For me,
James, I think I really likeBrad Robbins. I'm excited for him.
Look at you liking the specialist. What a one eighty. Yeah, I

(21:00):
don't want any punters now, that'sprobably what it was. No, look,
Jackson Carman, of course, he'sde facto right tackle one right Lell
Collins was he did bring his cleatsout and was getting a little work in
on his own. Nothing like thethe video that broke social media last week,
but at least we didn't say anythinglike that, but was out there

(21:22):
making progress. So we'll see.But no, nothing too too major to
take away. You know. It'suh that there walk through style type things.
It's about the camaraderie as much asanything. But looking at at that
right tackle spot, we can kindof segue into Joanah Williams and Zach didn't

(21:45):
reveal if he expects Jonah Williams thereor not. For mandatory Mini Camp,
which starts, uh, well intwo weeks OTAs or next week. These
are right now. It's just kindof workouts, all season workouts, organized
team activities officially start next week andthen the week after that is mandatory Mini
Camp. I expect to see JohanaWilliams for mandatory Mini Camp. We'll see

(22:08):
if it happens. That would bethe time for him to show up.
If he's going to do everything thismandatory be mandatory Mini camp would be training
camp. He saw Jesse batesmiss someof that stuff last year. A bit
of a different situation, but similarinsofar as you know, the one year
left on the deal on an optionkind of thing, a franchise tag versus

(22:30):
a fifth year option. A littlebit different, but some similarities between those
two mechanisms available to the Bengals frontoffice to keep guys under contracts for an
additional year. Where Jona probably didn'tget the extension he wanted. Then he
wanted to get traded after Orlando Brownsigned with the Bengals and all those things.
But that's when the reporting this offseason, right is that he was

(22:52):
going to do the mandatory things iswhat folks expected to who were talking to
his camp, and so we'll seeif he's there in a couple of weeks.
It is the Bengals off season programfinishing up though two more weeks and
then they get a break before trainingcamp, and Zach Taylor talked about that
and talked about, you know whythey're taking the approach they're taking that isn't

(23:14):
or isn't designed to be anyway incrediblyphysically taxing. They want to get these
guys to June fifteenth, which wasa date Zach Taylor mentioned, which is
where that offseason break occurs for coachesand players. Want to get them there
as healthy as possible. And soit'll be interesting really to see if Jonah
does get back for that mini camp, which if the last few years or

(23:38):
any indication won't be terribly taxing either. No, it won't, And I
do think it's valuable. You can'tpraise Tyler for being back and saying how
good it is and then dismissed theidea of Jonah missing valuable reps with this
team. And I think these guyswill welcome him back with open arms.

(24:00):
Like Jesse last year. They undersideunderstand the business side of it, and
I would be pretty surprised if wedon't see Jonah mid June. So that's
certainly that'll be interesting. Then, right, who does line up at right
tackle one? How many reps doeshe take? Is he on the side
like there's a lot there, Andso I'm sure there will be about five
thousand people around his locker trying totalk to him. I'll be one of

(24:22):
them during those mandatory mini camp practicesand open mocker rooms before the practice.
So that said, the thing I'mkind of excited about last year the joint
practices. You mentioned it a littlebit, the joint practices against the Green
Bay Packers. Zach Taylor revealed thison Tuesday one, not two. Obviously,

(24:44):
all hell broke loose in practice numbertwo against the Rams last year.
But I can already see the narrative. If Jordan Love completes a deep ball
to Christian Watson, oh man,is it time to worry about the safeties.
That said, the Bengals are hostingthe Packers for a one day joint
practice on the Wednesday before that firstpreseason game, getting it done early in
the preseason, which is I believesimilar to last year. What was it

(25:10):
last year was preseason game number three, not even close. It was a
last for last year, I believeso. I think it was. I'm
ninety five percent sure. I mightbe wrong on that though. I was
either the first of the last inmy head and I couldn't remember. I'm
going to check down. But gettingit out of the way early, yeah,

(25:32):
the third preseason game last year,no training camp frustrations to build up
to the point of the boiling pointof a joint practice late in the preseason.
Perhaps that will help things a littlebit. Getting it in early as
well, because it's not terribly uncommonto see the sort of fractus breakout in

(25:57):
some of these joint practice is aroundthe NFL. In the last few years,
it feels like there's been a numberof scuffles, to say the least,
And so hopefully this year they getthose valuable reps working against another team
a little bit with the joint practice, especially for those first unit guys who
you know, it'll be another yearof us asking and hopefully again you know,

(26:19):
knock on what Joe Burrow getting througha normal off season where we're asking,
you know, is Joe Burrow, are these starters going to play in
this preseason, which is a questionthat we've wondered about the last couple of
years, where they really haven't donea lot of work in preseason games.
I think they'll get a series ortwo. I don't think it's going to

(26:41):
be much. I think they'll playa little bit and that's it. The
entire preseason that'll be. I don'tthink the Bengals are going to change their
tune at all based on I don'tthink they look at last year and they'll
start to the season. It's moreBurrow is coming off of napping back to
me and have played anyway. Leowas hurt in the preseason. We couldn't

(27:03):
play him anyways, and Alex Cappawas coming back like. It wasn't all
We're fully healthy and ready to go, and we just didn't play any of
these guys. They weren't ready. That's part of it. The guys that
were ready also didn't play. Likethere were no starters on offense that played
playing without Joe Burrow. What's thepoint. Yeah, I mean there's a
fair question there, you know, going through the process part of it,

(27:25):
right, Zach Taylor said, itwas really interesting. Zach Taylor said the
most interesting thing for him to watchin these practices is new guys, new
teammates, getting in and out ofthe huddle together, building that camaraderie on
the field as well as off thefield. And you know, mentioning specifically
Tyler there the first time, TylerBoyd the first time they've had all three
