Pike. Sunday edition of the programstarts right now. Thank you all,

(00:50):
very very very much for listening.I'm looking at a live shot of the
galus of beach Front at forty thirdStreet, courtesy of Adam Snyder, who
put this camera on my giant monitorin here. The water looks absolutely gorgeous.
About fifty yards past the into thatlittle rock growing at forty third Street.

(01:11):
Nobody in the water waiting this morning. I'm gonna go ahead and pop
up. Let me get to this. I'm gonna go down and take a
quick look at saltwater recon and seewhat it looks like down there at surf
side. I'll be curious to know. There were a lot of fish caught
from a surf yesterday, from manyreports that I got throughout the day,
all of them just rubbing my nosein the fact that I was not down

(01:36):
there. Hey, where are youman? Pretty good? Oh, surf
side, really pretty. Surf sidelooks very good. Somebody's got control of
the camera right now, and theydon't have it pointed at an angle.
I would like, hold on.I'm gonna lean in here. Oh yeah,
yeah, if I were down there, i'd be all over that.
I'm gonna go to a different camerareal quick and see if I can find

(01:56):
there's one at Galveston. I wantto look at that. I think will
tell me what I want to knowabout down there too. Come on,
camera, don't take all day.I had a double check a few times
that there really was Galveston the water. Yes, you and so many other
people had. The sun angle ishorrible on the ninety first treat Pier,

(02:16):
But there are a boatload of peopleout there. It's interesting. Yeah,
I can tell you which way thewind's bowling, because everybody down there wants
to cast with the wind for somereason. The irony is that the structure.
This is something about pier fishing thata lot of people don't realize.
It's the structure that draws and holdsto fish. Yet, when even fishing

(02:38):
now down off the end of thepier, if you're slinging a chunk of
something out there in hopes of catchinga big jack cravale or a bull red
in the fall or something like that, it's okay to sling it way out
there. I understand that you're tryingto get it in a little bit more
and a little bit more deep water, deeper water, but up closer to

(03:00):
the beach. When it's trout timethis time of year, when the fish
are in the surf like they are, it's that structure that's going to hold
those fish. Now, I wouldn'trecommend necessarily fishing straight down, but if
you fish on the down current sideof that structure, which most people are
gonna do anyway, don't sling ithalf a mile away and let the wind

(03:23):
pull it even farther away from wherethe fish are ultimately may be going to
hold as they moved up and moveup and down the beach front. I
used to like to go to thewindward side and cast into the wind and
then bring it back, bring mylure back, or my live bay,
whatever I was using back when Iwas very young, either one, and

(03:44):
just let it drift back toward thestructure, kind of naturally, as if
it were being moved in the waterwith the current, which it kind of
is, and just let it looka little bit more natural. It's an
honest mistake, but one that waytoo many people make, and it call
some fish. And there are littleholes and stuff, little washouts. Say
up out toward that tea head atthe ninety first Street pier, we used

(04:09):
to catch a lot of trout standingon the right side as you stand on
the beach looking out to the endof the pier, in that little ninety
degree turn about fifteen yards either sideof it. If you were to draw
a line straight out from fifteen yardsinside of that tea on either piece of
pier, there was a little washout there that used to hold a lot

(04:31):
of trouted. Place still does, but most people don't fish on those piers
long enough to figure out some ofthat stuff. They get down there and
just because they're over the water,How did I get on pier fishing?
So early this morning. Boy,I did a lot of that. That
pier has a lot of good memoriesfor me. One of my best friends
I met on that pier. Iwas on the far left end of the

(04:54):
tea head. He was on thefar right into the tea head at the
crack of dawn on some week dayand I had two rods out, he
had, I think he had threeor four. Actually had his girlfriend with
him, so he was counting heras another angler who could have two long
rides at the end of the pier, and so he was doubled up and

(05:15):
he ended up getting two bites atthe same time on jackfish and is instead
of his girlfriend picking up one ofthe rods, he just centered down to
grab me to go get that guyat the other end of the pier,
and we became very good friends.Spent a lot of time in the outdoors
together after that. That's just oneof about a thousand times I was on

(05:35):
that pier. Probably called a lotof speckled trout off that pier. Back
when there was a pier at SaintLouis pass, I caught boatloads of speckle
trout off that pier, and oneof the one of the secrets that my
friends and I found out was thatthe standard standard issue routine for almost I

(05:56):
would say ninety five percent of thepeople who came down to that pier at
night to fish for trout was towalk out to at least two thirds of
the way out and then try tofind themselves a hole between the people farther
out, somewhere between there and theend of the pier. Well, my
friends and I would hang out justif you if you remember that pier,

(06:20):
as soon as you walked out thedoor, you walked through one door into
the tackle shop where you paid yourmoney to go fish on the pier,
and then you walked out another doorand down to the pier level and walked
out to go fish, and thewater started. The water was there right
as you kind of came down ona good tide, and then it went

(06:43):
all the way out and they werethe first light was only maybe I don't
know, maybe ten fifteen yards fromdry sand, maybe twenty yards tops in
about two two and a half feetof water. And my friends and I
would kind of hang out right thereat that very first light, and when
people would come out, we'd stopfishing. We just stand there and talk

(07:03):
and act like we were deciding whereto go and whatnot. But there were
significant numbers of fish at night upin. They're really tight on that beach,
some good quality fish as well.So if you're gonna fish the surf,
if you're gonna fish piers, learna little bit more about them,
and don't just go to where themost people are, because that doesn't mean

(07:26):
that's where the most fish are.In a lot of cases, my buddies
are not just we man. Wewere sharpshooters, and we would go exactly
where we needed to go based onthe collective knowledge of eight or ten people
in our little group who were justreligiously on those piers, that jetties,

(07:46):
those little rock ruins in Galveston. There are right ways and wrong ways to
fish them. All those places willput up or give up good fish.
If you're in the spot where thosefish are probably going to be. Oh
there's somebody, what's he doing. There's a wade fisherman down there in Galveston.
I know exactly where he is,and I will well, I'm not

(08:07):
going to tell him because he'll figureit out for himself someday. But he
is standing about maybe the best Ican tell in this picture maybe three or
four hundred yards from where he needsto be, and if he was as
high up as this pier camera is, he could see the difference in watercolor
down where I'm talking about versus wherehe is. I'm sure he'll probably pick

(08:28):
up a couple of fish where heis, he'll do okay, but he's
not where that most of them are. And if he was where I'm talking
about and where I can actually see, I'm not giving up this spot,
not right now, because it startedgetting crowded a couple of years ago,
and I don't want it to getany more crowded. There's one guy closer
down to where he needs to be. There's now hold on, let me

(08:48):
lean in. Yeah, there's twoguys in the water. Three in the
water down where I'm talking about. And the iron is that they really don't
even need to be in the waterto catch fish there. If they were
to turn around and throw back towardthe rocks where they are, they probably
catch more fish. But they're standingout there facing the wide open Gulf of

(09:09):
Mexico, hope, and they cancast all the way to Mexico and they'll
catch some fish. But they're notgoing to catch the most they could catch,
or maybe the best they could catchcatching fish, They'll catching any trout
at all is ultimately the goal formost fishermen in the Texas, on the
Texas Gulf Coast. The average I'vetalked about this before, the average for

(09:31):
people who are dedicated to catching speckledtrout from the moment they walk out the
door. That's their singular goal. We're gonna go catch some trout. I'm
gonna go catch some trout. Averagecatch one, just one, which means
that a lot of people, becausethere are a lot of people now who
catch two, three, four, five, ten, twenty. They can't
keep the ball, obviously, butthey catch them, and that means a

(09:54):
lot of people go home empty, empty handed. They get skunked, which
is no. It's a long ridehome when you've got nothing to no story
to tell, nothing in the icebox. I don't if you if you
want to keep some fish to eat, I'm not gonna beat you up over
it. I am thrilled with theattention conservation is being paid these days versus

(10:18):
what it was years ago. Butthere are still plenty of people out there
too who really do want to catchthere and take home, and I got
no quarrel with it. Their firstever limited trout. I'm talking about grown
men and women, not four andfive and ten year olds. And then
when they get it, they'll havethat box checked and maybe they won't keep

(10:39):
as many fish anymore. Maybe theywill as long as you're playing within the
rules set forth by the law.I've got no quarrel with how you fish.
Why Why would I? Why wouldI? If you are a licensed
fisherman and you are abiding by allthe rules set forth by the state,

(11:00):
I'm glad you're out there. Ifyou bought that license, you have earned
the right to be out there, the right to catch all the fish that's
the law allows, and then catchsome more and throw them back, as
long as you're being careful doing that. It's a very simple formula, if
we follow the rules. This isone area of society in which I do
believe that the overwhelming majority of usplay by the rules and fish within the

(11:26):
rules, and an increasing number ofus are going above and beyond what the
law prescribes and saying, you knowwhat, I know, I could keep
five today, but I'm just I'lltake two home to eat in the next
couple of days, and then I'llleave the rest. I'll throw the rest
back. That conversation I have withCliff Webb just the other day, he

(11:46):
was talking about how many, howfew fish he's actually keeping anymore his clients,
most the overwhelming majorities, clients don'teven want to kill a fish.
I don't want to kill a singleone. Now, if something comes back
to you all blooded and battered, and clearly your hook has ricked one of
its ripped one of its gills outof its mouth, and it's hanging out

(12:07):
the hanging out, then it's probablynot gonna have much of a chance of
making it. And if it's alegal length fish through in the box taking
home and ediot fresh trout, anotherwrong will take it home, some fresh
trout or fresh flounder or flesh, fresh redfish, whatever. Let's just played
by the rules and and keep conservationin mind. We have we are on

(12:28):
the brink of a really really goodbunch of big fish for next year.
The middle size range that that twentyfour to twenty seven twenty eight inch fish,
A lot of those up and downthe Texas coast this year, just
and just not that far behind thatbig freeze we had. But I think

(12:52):
what happened was nature did what italways does behind an event like that,
where it wants to take care ofthe remaining stock, and there's just was
just this proliferation of bait of thingsthat trout eat for what almost two years
now, and all of a sudden, the fish that were left got to
gorge themselves. It's just like openingup an endless buffet of all your favorite

(13:16):
food and at the end of itall, you're gonna be bigger, and
those fish are bigger, and ifthey get one more year to grow like
that, we're gonna see some seamonsters with dots on their sides come in
one year from now, maybe two, depending on the weather we get.
But somewhere in that range, dideither this come a year from now or

(13:41):
two years from now during prime troutseason, prime big trout season, We're
gonna see some just absolute gorillas beingcaught and photographed and hopefully released just to
find out how big they can get. Holy cow, I'm late. I
gotta take a break. Seven onethree two one two five seven ninety Email
me Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot com.Just about anything goes on a Friday,

(14:03):
we're actually gonna talk. We're gonnatalk about the PGA Championship, and what
a god, what a slugfest itwas yesterday. It didn't take much to
make a move up the leaderboard, just had to avoid mistakes. And I
am gonna talk up for a coupleof minutes at least about Tiger Woods and
the impression I think that. Ithink the way the way history will record
him fifty and a hundred years fromnow, not how we're talking about him

(14:28):
now, but how history will recordhim. All Right, we've finally gotten
some relief from the all had mercilessrain we had for so long, and
it's gonna be hot and dry basicallyfor the next week if you pop ups
today and maybe tomorrow, but otherthan that, smooth sailing. And that
means you can start thinking about golfevery day next week. And one of

(14:50):
my favorite places if you wanted togo play, would be black Horse up
there on the northwest side all FridayRoad, a few miles south of two
ninety, Very easy to find, two courses, the north and the south,
a great teaching staff, a greatgrill. Some friends of mine went
up there and played o. Guysjust probably been a couple of months ago
now, and there were three foursomesof them, And when they finally finished

(15:15):
their golf and came in and finishedeating and having adult beverages, they had
they had had a very large time. And I heard about that from several
of them. That's the experience almosteverybody gets at black Horse Golf Club.
You got an entire staff of peoplestarting at the top and working all the
way down to the young people whomight be out there to clean off your

(15:37):
clubs after you come in. Everybodythere wants you, truly want you to
have a good time. Whether it'sjust you and a buddy wanted to jump
out on a Sunday morning, oryou got two hundred people to raise money
for charity. Black Horses can accommodateyou both either way. Black Horse Golf

place. Uh. All my rowdyfriends have settled down by Hanklin's Junior.
My rowdy friends, all my friendsare way past rowdy. I think I
can't. Just off the top ofmy head, I can't think of anybody

(16:26):
I might call rowdy except maybe RickMice. Hey, what's up Rick?
Well, I'll need your help,Doug all right, okay, at least
help my brothers find a dear leaseabout it. Still probably been over thirty
years ago, wild country. Yeah, and uh, he has from day

(16:51):
one he's had a problem with ringtailcats staring at you've got there's an encampment
that was set up mostly mobile homesor let's call on travel traders. Yeah.
Sure, And he's got this realproblem with this ringtail cat. He
won't let sleep my brother. Hewon't let him. He won't let my

(17:15):
brother sleep. He's crowing through thewalls, asking my brother. He has
put up a thousand pieces of tinon the outside of covering up. They
just tear the tin off, Ohmy gosh, and everything else gets in
there. And he called me thismorning about four o'clock and he said,
hey, he says, what areyou doing. I said, I'm jix
In a row man. Yeah,And he says, well, come on

(17:37):
up here and stay a day ortwo. Help me get these raintail cats
out here. Once if we gotto figure this out. And my brother's
not stupid about stuff like we've triedtrapping them, smoking on the out,
poisoning, you name it. Anduh, he said, come on up
there and help me. We're gonnawe're gonna finish this off. And I

(18:00):
said, well, okay, Isaid worth and there saw day in express.
He said, well, I'll stayhere. I said, dude,
I said, you have sent metoo many pictures on your life, cameras
of ringtail cats, raccoons, ratsbigger than almonbillows and rittle snakes. And

(18:21):
I said, not getting in thatrighter. No, you don't need to
be up in there. But hesays, there is absolutely no way to
keep them them things out. Hesaid, he has done everything, he
said. He said, what doyou think I ought to do? I
said, He said, I thinkI'm gonna haul it off and fix it
all up again. I told him, I said that, dude, I

(18:44):
said, that thing will never evenmake it when you hook on to it.
It won't even make it to thehigh One could be in a million
pieces, I said. I said, do it so the favor to the
land favor, I said. Hesaid, what I said, burn it
on fire. Burn it. Yeah, I don't think I get the same
thing down. Yeah, let himknow what you're doing and then just burn
it down. Yeah you got themoney, go buy you a new one

(19:08):
or by your Conics trailer or something. But anyway, yeah, but you
know, okay, your first idea, what would you do get getting out?
Now? I know this is aproblem because I haven't up tear or
around here in places where I cannotkeep squirrels and mostly cool. We don't
have a ring until can't you knowyou got them somewhere up around? Actually,

(19:30):
man, I'm honestly thinking he mayjust have to start over, just
like we're talking about, and justand bring up maybe one of those shipping
containers turned into a little place tostay and something was solid walls, absolutely
solid walls. That's the only wayhe's I mean, something they can't chew
through, they can't tear through, and then keep the food and water away
from him. I said, yougot two Conics and sitting up here in

(19:53):
this pasture and ain't hard to findsomebody. I said, you got all
and the rhythmics. But you knowwhat the bottom line is, dog,
I think my brother likes the stingof battle with them ringtail cats. Yeah,
it's just he knows he's gonna havesomething to do every time he goes
up there. Think's got plenty todo after it's a big place. Yeah,

(20:17):
he's any like you think of Sumerany lessener out there. I mean
we I'm gonna tell you we've doneit all, all this has been going
on for years, but we cannot keep them out of there. Yeah,
the stuff I was looking ashamed tosay that, I feel I feel
like I just feel like I'm lettingeverybody down because I'm supposed to know this.
I can't. I can't. Hecan't if I can't, If he

(20:40):
can't, I can't. Wow.Yeah, that's a tough one, man,
because and there's lots of stuff online. I was looking while we were
talking ringtail Cat Control, ringtail CatManagement, and they're all talking about trapping
them and getting them out of there. But you gotta get him in the
trap. And if they've gone gottenwise to his traps, then then it
says just keep all the food andwater away. If there's nothing to keep

(21:03):
them there, they'll move on.But they're using they're not using it for
food or water, they're using itfor shelter. And that they're using it
for shelter and they eat wood andyeah, plastic and rubber and any insallational
wires. Yeah, yeah, that'sthat's tougher. We'll see you know,

(21:26):
Captain Scott may be listening. Ifanybody knows how to get rid of a
ringtail cat, I bet it behim, So we'll see. No cold
luck, could luck Rick, I'llsee you, buddy odios man. Yeah,
I can hear in his voice thathe wants to help his brother,
that he wants to get that ringtailcat or those ringtail cats out of those

(21:49):
old mobile homes. But because theyand how they're built actually provide sources of
not only shelter, but a littlebit of food and nesting material and everything
else. It's like these they're justsquatters. They're just squatters, and it's
hard to get rid of them. Not I read a story this week about

(22:11):
it. This is the only reasonI'm bringing it up is because the word
squatter came to my mind in adifferent story when I said it, and
I believe it was in Georgia. This woman who had actually served in our
military. She's a lieutenant colonel andshe'd been deployed for about a year or
somewhere and put her house up forsale, and when she came back and

(22:33):
there was actually a deal pending onthe house. So when she came back,
she went by the house, whichshe had recently had remodeled before she
got deployed, and there's some dudeliving in her house. And when confronted
about that, he produced a fakelease from a fictitious company saying that he

(22:59):
had indeed lease this place and waspaying rent on it and put down to
the bar. All of it wasblowny, but it was a very elaborate
hoax, and he had been livingin her house for months, and in
a lot of states, because thatperson had been there, it would be
very difficult to get rid of him. In Georgia, I think it was

(23:21):
they just the police just went overand said, Okay, you're gonna have
to show us more evidence than thisthat you belong here, and if you
can't, okay, bye bye,how we're done, and just got him
out of there, just ran himout. But there are a lot of
places where if somebody's up in yourbusiness and you don't know about it,
and they've got fake paperwork, thenit becomes a court issue and a trespassing

(23:47):
issue or not a unlawful entry issue. It's really kind of upside down.
But that's the way it is.I'm looking at it. I'm mesmerized by
the beach front this morning. There'sjust that nagging a little bit. This
is in Galveston, and the snapshotat forty third Street or not a snapshot
at video and actually there are wellthere's a guy's surfing right there. I
was gonna say, those waves lookbig enough to ride. They look about

(24:10):
waist high and pretty clean. Actually, it's a good clean right breaking right
now at the end of that littlerock ruin. So if you're a surfer,
might not be a bad day tobe down there. And if you're
a fisherman, and if you findthe place along the beach runt and galvets
in the surfside where the water isa little bit better right up to the
rocks or the beach, you mightcatch it more than a few speckled try.

(24:32):
I'd be scared to see how manypeople are on the the surfside Jetty
today. I bet it would bea as they say in the business,
a boatload. It's never fun. It's very, very disappointed to go all
the way there and find that. All right, Adam's whispering break in my
ear? Yeah, I know,man, I got a clock. I
got a big clock in here, and I have a wrist watch on and

(24:55):
have a phone that has a clock. So I know I'm late at ablished
that, and I know I needto go out for a break, So
I'm gonna do that right now,and on the way there, I'll take
you American Shooting Centers, okay, the largest non military shooting facility in the
entire state of Texas, which leadsme to wonder, actually, just as

(25:15):
a quick sidebar, where's that bigmilitary shooting facility, I bet that's interesting?
But right here, I know it'snot around here, And around here
you're not going to find any placebetter to shoot, any place better run,
better managed, has a better ownerthan at a Regee than American Shooting
Centers. Since he bought that placeseveral years ago, he has added so

(25:38):
much more. There are now twohundred plus shooting stations, three sporting play's
courses. I think it's ten trapand skeet fields, three or four maybe
five five stands setups around the property. I don't know. There's a beginner's
wing shooting area. There's pistols pistolshooting starting at five yards and rifles out

(26:00):
six hundred yards, all lined upnice neat, straight row right as you
come into the facility, that's thefirst thing you'll see as a rifle range.
Then you got trapping skied off tothe right about pretty far, and
then you got sporting clays off tothe left about pretty far. Big place,
all spread out, so more thantwo hundred people can actually physically could

(26:22):
be shooting at the same time ina very safe, very well run environment.
There are instructors for any shooting disciplineyou can imagine, strongly recommend that.
If you're not a cracker jack shotjust yet and you're tired of wasting
money on AMMO during bird season, man, think about how much money you
could save if you invest in twoor three good quality wing shooting lessons.

(26:45):
You'll save that money back in AMMO. If you're as avid at hunters I
used to be, you'll save thatback in the first season. American Shooting
Centers dot Com is the website. They're on West Timer Parkway between Highway six

be sitting in the balcony of asymphony house. You know, the powdered

(27:32):

little binoculars. Yeah, that's whatI need. So who named Who's at?
Uh? It's bach prelude number fivein d mature. Sure about when?
Um? Oh, never mind,it's too long a joke and it's
it's not it's not good enough. It won't make people would just grown.
I'll tell you later a joke thatI'm reminded of by that seven one three

(27:59):
two one two five seven Email meDoug Pike and iHeartMedia dot com. I
found some interesting stuff before I goto David's call real quick and this.
I kind of play this along alittle bit with Will on fifty plus,
but I'll do it with you today. Adam, pick one of these three
how many t rexes from thin airor going down? I'm sorry? Were

(28:21):
you even paying attention? I don'teven know what that means. Trying to
beat those are headlines I just putover stories. So pick one of those
and then I'll explain what I meantby it. Do you need the titles
all again? Yeah? Yeah,I thought, so you're going down from
thin air? Or how many trexes? I'm going with the t rexes?
Yeah, that's and I should havecome up with a better one,
Dave, Hang on this. I'llget to you as fast as I can.
Now. I've walked myself into thistrap, and I gotta walk myself

(28:45):
out. T rex was around forabout two and a half million years before
it went extinct. Okay, soit's outdoorsy. There was no indoors back
when they were around. So howmany of them were their total? Some
new study puts the number at onepoint seven billion t rexes, which is
pretty pretty amazing. Really, nineteenthousand per generation, they figure, and

(29:07):
about ninety thousand generations over those twoand a half million years. That's pretty
interesting. It's not no, it'snot all that good. I'm just gonna
go talk to Dave. What's up, Dave. If we were a cave
man, we'd just be a smackof pointing that the true well, yeah,
the slow ones were. Yeah,I didn't have to outrun the t

(29:30):
Rex. I just had to outrunyou. That was an original grizzly bear
right there. Oh, I know, I was listening to talk about burn
it down. Yeah, you know, control burns. You know, when
I was the kid, we hadseventy two acres and then uh, you
know, over the years it gotwhittled down. But still you gotta call.
We'd called New Watley Fire department, let them know if we were hunting

(29:52):
at night, you would call thegame war. Yeah, we let him
know, you know what time, what time you're going. And then when
we cut we cut sixty two pinetrees down out of the middle about a
hundred to build a pond up whenthe slopes coming down and goes into the
goal. It was all surveyed andyou know, and so the logs now

(30:15):
they were uh you know, theygot restored, you know, they were
sold to the log and coring. But we had all the limbs out there,
so we piled it up in them. A dad got the tractor,
took the blade of you know,a cloud blade, and around and around,
and then he got a disc andhe put we put the disc on
and he goes around around because you'remaking the fire break, right, And

(30:36):
then carry a couple of fire extinguishersaround and then we'd have a big camp
fire at night and cooking barbecue andplaying music candaba. With all that,
what a big camp fire sounds likea little bit of an understatement. I'm
thinking, well, yeah, hey, and I tell you what, you
better be back about one hundred andsomething. But kicking an eye on the
fire to lose your eyelashes, wouldn'tyou, yes, sir, Yeah,

(31:00):
that's it? Hey, real quickon. I watched the episode of Daniel
Boone and you know, I don'tknow you've been big game hunt, but
they were. He was. Therewas a black panther stalking this young lady
and bagalong story short him Mingo andthe lady, the young lady's dad.
They were there baited with a goator whatever he okay, and then the

(31:25):
girl went out in her cape outthere walking around and panther confronted her,
and Daniel Boone took one shot outof the powdered gun that's all he had,
and then he pulled his Booe knifeand had a jump on him.
Then gosh, he got him.Now wait a minute, here's the kicker.
When Bingo come over here and gothim and picked him up and put
him up against the tree. Whenhe got up, the tip of that

(31:45):
booey knife broke off into the panther. But what what writing? You know
what I'm saying, what you know, that's some great writing for teleplay,
teleplay, So yeah, I appreciateit. Man, how they left the
pincer lamb there. I would havedrugged hole. Oh my gosh, oh

(32:07):
man, I would like I wouldlike to see that episode of Daniel Boone
to see through Oh of course itis through twenty first century eyes. Just
how good it just how good orbad it looked to see him wrestling with
his knife out with a kid's stuffedtoy black leopard or panther or whatever.

(32:30):
Mount one, I bet that. But the but the what the uh?
But then again, you got tolook at all the trained animals that were
in. You could train fish orwell, you can actually train deer and
stuff. Just put a corn feederup, you know, or you know,
you bade a hole. But Imean, uh, you know,
to to train an animal or aline or tiger, it's dangerous. Yeah,

(32:54):
it's that too, Thank Davi.Man, great, thanks you.
I'll be listening. We'll be workingout here in the yard. It's a
nice and cool brees and I canhell, hey, I can breathe.
There's no no humidity too much.Yes, I'll see you videos. Holy
cow, Daniel Boone. I usedto watch that show I did. I'll

(33:16):
remember that vividly, Daniel Boone. That was a good show. Were all
of the classic folk key rows andhistoric figures that's whose reputations were just larger
than life. They were fascinating. Our imaginations ran wild with all the things
that Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett musthave done. They were just guys.

(33:40):
And part of the beauty I thinkof growing up when I did was that
we we did rely on our imaginationsto entertain us. We didn't rely on
electronics to entertain us as kids. And in the long rue, I think
that kind of works out better becauseyour imagination can go wherever your own mind

(34:02):
wants to take it. If you'rewatching a movie or you're watching a television
show, you can only go wherethe writers take you, and that's an
extremely limited distance. In letting yourbrain operate on your own behalf, you're
giving up control of your brain toa handful of writers in a room somewhere

(34:27):
who you'll never meet, and theyknow nothing about you, and you know
nothing about them, and they're tryingto please millions of people all at once.
Where when you're just sitting alone withyour own thoughts, you can be
as wild and crazy or as subduedas you choose to be, because you
have that choice. Watching anything createdby somebody else severely limits your choices.

(34:53):
All Right, it's gonna be ahot day. There's gonna be a bunch
of hot days coming, and atsome point during that day, you just
might get a little thirsty and youmight want to maybe reach for a bush
light, cold and smooth and samegreat taste. It's always had, same
great sound when you open the can, Well, are we opening a bottle

(35:15):
or a can? With that sound? That's that's the can sound, right,
that's cracking a can. Yeah, crap, excuse me cracking a can.
I'm sorry. In my day,we just opened the can. We
didn't crack it like a walnut.I guess. So what do you do
to a bottle? Then you don'tcrack a bottle. You just twist open
popa top. Well, that goesback farther than you've been born. That's

(35:37):
that predates you popa top. Findthat song. There's a song called that
anyway, American style logger crafted todeliver the rewarding finish we've all come to
know and love. So head forthe lake, here for the bay,
the beach front, and when youfinish doing whatever it is you're doing,
driving something, then grab yourself anice cold bush Light drink responsibly, please.

(36:01):
I would greatly appreciate that as whateverybody else on the road. An

Show again, classic country right therefor sure, solely cow popatop again,
Yeah, and again and again andagain and again. Some people pop more
tops than others. I got anemail from Keith. He said, perched
rode yesterday and fishing license got toQuintana near sunset. No bites but that

(36:46):
but really nice time. Since theaverage number of fish caught is one,
my zero helps somebody else catch afish. I think that's pretty good.
That's a great way to look atit. You're contributing to somebody else's happiness.
Therefore you should be happy, right. I enjoy being out so much.
Being skunk doesn't bother me. Justhappy that I'm out there. You

(37:07):
know. That is such a greatattitude to have. That's the way I
am with fishing. I don't getdisappointed if I don't catch any fish.
And the reason is that by notcatching any fish, I can load that
and to tuck that into a cornerin my brain and alongside the conditions what

(37:28):
I was throwing, what maybe Icould have thrown instead, Where I could
have gone instead? All of that, he's ready to land a speckled trout.
You will just make sure you're indecently clean water, maybe a foot
of visibility or more. Make surethere's active bait fish around where you are.

(37:50):
Depends on what you're doing and whattime of year it is and so
forth. There's a lot of factors. Just it's not a guarantee that if
you find bait, you'll find fish, Nor is it a guarantee that if
you don't see active bait on thesurface that there aren't fished there. But
that's generally if there's no groceries onthe table, if there's no dinner on
the table, the kids aren't runningfrom upstairs to downstairs just to sit there

(38:15):
and stare at an empty table. That makes sense. Yeah, I'm glad
you're out. I'm glad you're inthe game. Keith, You'll get yours,
don't worry. Ask Robert. WhenRobert and I started swapping emails back
and forth more than a year ago, at least maybe a year and a
half, now, he was prettygreen to all of this, and all
of a sudden, now he's takingguy. He's doing guided trips at the

(38:37):
end of his pier with his buddies. Have not really guided trips, but
he's kind of he's teaching other peoplethe ropes, and I love that part
of it. I really do.Good. Heavens, I got all kinds
of stuff to take care of here. David wrote, Let's see, when
we're talking about people squatting on yourplace, what about the absent landowners who

(38:59):
lease their land to a group ofhunters who then find out that another group
has been hunting the place, sometimesfor years without the landowner's permission. He
said, I've even heard stories wherea landowner found hunters on his property that
tried to bluff him off by claimingto own his land. Yeah, they're

(39:21):
out there. They're called cheaters, they're called lawbreakers, they're called worse than
that in a lot of circles. And you just have to sort it all
out and let the law get involvedand deal with it that way. Oh

(39:43):
boy, here we go Aaron, and he tips on avoiding sargassam out there
in the surf. That's a toughthing to do. There aren't many lures
that will slide through that stuff withoutgetting fouled, and it can be very
frustrating. And see hoping to takeback one fish preferably as sheep's head for
eating it. Really quite like them. Yeah, they're very tasty, maybe

(40:07):
a mangled trout. If that happens, he's all fired up. He wants
to get out there and catch fish. Okay, Then, if you're trying
to deal with that sargass and weed, the best thing you can do is,
first of all, don't throw anythingwith trouble hooks, because that's just
six times as many chances you're goingto foul on that stuff somehow. Throw

(40:30):
jigs and you can't. You canbuy weedless jig hooks, jigheads and what
they'll have is a little either alittle piece of wire or a little piece
of monofilament affixed to the jighead sothat it kind of deflects that grass from
getting caught in the bend of thehook, and they work pretty well.

(40:52):
It's a lot of work to do, frankly. One thing you can do
is slow your retrieve down and keepthat jighead under that sargas and weed.
Other than that, there's not muchyou can do. But just bear in
mind that that grass is cover forlittle things that bigger things eat, and

(41:14):
as such attracts also the bigger things. So sar gas and weed. Well,
if it's really thick in the surf, it's a pain in the backside,
it really is. It's so frustratingthey have to deal with that.
But if you can just fish aroundit and be patient, throw it,
throw your lure into holes in thegrass, and you'll be rewarded for it

(41:37):
eventually. Just don't walk through thebig piles of it when you're on your
way back to your car, becauseyour whole leg will stink to high heaven
when you get back. In EaglesBoatyard, the boatyard, what sign says

case skifts can be configured any wayyou like them. You go down there
in order one, sitting down withJT. And Mark from the service department
and anybody else and everybody else who'saround there, and brainstorm what you want
the inside of that boat to looklike, and they'll build it for you,
which is a fantastic way to finetune that thing to be better save

(42:22):
for speckled trout than for croppy,or for basting for red fish or whatever
wherever you want to use that boat. Get them to rig it out the
way you want it, get youraccessories figured out, get you all your
electronics, your trolling motor, yourpower pull, your sound system, your
light bar, if that's what youwant on your boat. They'll do all
of that for you, and they'lldo it with any boat you bring to

them. They have a good wayabout finding solutions to situations that other boat

looks that ugly for pretty much everyweekday this week. I don't know if
there's any chance for rain already onthe books for next Saturday and Sunday,
but for heaven's sakes, that's fivesix days out. So just dismiss whatever

(44:15):
you see that's predicting the weather thatfar. It's virtually impossible to do that.
Just ridiculously silly that that's even upthere. Seven one three, two

something else I found out that wasvery telling about the world, and I

(44:36):
found it interesting, Adam, andI'm gonna go ahead and tell you this.
New York City, it says hereis sinking, not because of climate
change, not because the water levelis coming up, but it is sinking
under the weight of its own skyscrapers. It says here, which if those

(44:58):
things are built on bedrock, whichwould I would imagine they are. I
don't understand how this calculation is beingmade, but according to this story,
New York City is sinking at aboutan inch every fifteen to twenty years,
which means it's gonna be a whilebefore it's a problem. But it still

(45:21):
is kind of interesting. So thatwhat does it say an inch every twenty
years? So one hundred and twentyyears, it'll be a foot lower.
I just don't understand why that wouldhappen if they were built on solid foundations.
I'm not gonna spend any time onit here. According to this though,
the combined weight, this isn't apop quiz for you like I did

(45:44):
with Will and the combined weight ofthe skyscrapers in New York City is how
many pounds pounds? I was gonnasay, like a thousand tons or something.
Well, probably one building way isthat much? Anyway, it's one
point seven trillion pounds, which, honestly, I feel like that's a low

(46:06):
estimate. Yeah, I couldn't haveguessed that number. And then you got
all the people walking around there.Yeah, they're just stomping themselves into oblivion.
Not really, I don't think there'sa whole lot of I don't put
a whole lot of stock in thatstore, to be perfectly honest. Seven
one three two one two five sevennine. Email me Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot
com. I want to get theofficial PGA leaderboard up where brooks Kepka has

(46:31):
he played a really good round yesterdayunder those horrible conditions, absolutely horrible conditions,
and he probably shot sixty six andpositioned himself to well. He took
the lead in, took the leadin. Oh good, is that Tommy?
I want to talk to Tommy.I'm gonna shut up and go click

(46:52):
this hold on. Oh you alreadydid it? Thank you, Adam,
Tommy O'Brien. How in the worldare you, sir? I'm great,
fantastic. I have a couple ofquestions for you, and I know you're
a busy man, Saw. Iwon't keep you all morning. But I
had the opportunity this week to havea very excited, very enthusiastic young woman

(47:15):
stopped by my desk, one ofthe talents from over on the bus,
Teresa or Tessa, and she hasdecided she is going to get into golf.
She she she stops at my desk, looks at me, got this
giant grin on her face and says, I went over to Memorial yesterday and
bought a golf glove. Like whatwhy am I being told this? And

(47:37):
it turns out that somebody, guesssomebody else told her that I was the
one to tell and figure out whatto do. So I hooked her up
because she lives like three blocks fromMemorial. I hooked her up with Glenn
Glenn shoulders over there, but I, well, Glen's as good as they
come, and he's right in herbackyard. I would have sent her out

(47:58):
to you, but that's the onlyreason I send him center over there.
So I did want to pick yourbrain, though, because I've seen you
on that range at black Hawk workingwith so many young people, people from
that age to all the way tomy age. We're super seniors, I
guess we are now whatever anyway talkabout And I told her, and I
hope I gave her the right advice. I said, look, she goes,

(48:19):
how much what do I need tospend on clubs? How do I
do that? I said, youdon't want to have to go buy a
bunch of fancy expensive clubs. Justgo buy maybe a beginner set, and
then when you can tell me oryour instructor instructor what those newer clubs are
going to do for you, thenmaybe you're ready for that. I said,
spend more money right now on lessonsthan on the clubs. Am I

(48:39):
right? Please go? Please cut? I would say, yes. There's
so many great deals on so manyused golf club websites. I mean they're
all over the place. Sure,no, you don't know, And you
can even go to academy or anumber of other sports places. Dix has

(48:59):
a buny get a great beginner set. Yet now he wouldn't want that for
the rest of your life. I'mdeciding that you're going to become a great
golfer and whatnot, but just toget started, that'd be fine. And
I mean, I mean, Doug, you could even just have a few
clubs doing just to make sure youlike best to be expensive kind of like
the junior sets. Yeah, theydon't have a full set right there at

(49:20):
first, let her see if shelikes it or not, um and then
kind of decide to make the investmentfrom there. So definitely, yep.
I'm just mostly I'm trying to confirmthat what I told her was right.
So I also told her don't don'tlet somebody who's a twenty five handicap and
barely breaking a hundred, don't letthem give you swing advice. Is that

(49:43):
also a good tip? Does Isee that all the time? That's that's
true? And if if what yousay is true, and she's a pretty
girl, gold lover, and there'sgonna be a lot of guys I want
to give her TIFFs, And I'mlike, oh, come on, just
leave her alone, you know.I mean, you guys are you know,
sir, you're an account you don'tknow. Let her learn the game.
I agree, And that's exactly right. So, um, that's a

(50:09):
tough thing because because even my daughterswill will get advice and we didn't really
ask for it it because yet yeah, so at any rate, but please
don't want to deter her from playingthe game. She's all in, she
is, and she I've already toldher it's going to take a long time

(50:30):
before you're good, just but aslong as you're not slow, nobody's gonna
care. So how where do youstart? Somebody, a grown up person,
man or woman. What's that firstlesson? Look like, Tommy,
Well, what's really important. It'sfor them to understand the dynamics of how
a golf ball goes straight. Andwhat's important is to understand the shape that

(50:52):
you must make, which is acircle. See, golf is very difficult
because it makes sense to swing thegolf club up and down the target line
to hit it straight. But itdoesn't work that way because we stand to
the side of the ball. Soit's very very important that I let them
know that swinging the club in acircle is where you're gonna go. And

(51:15):
then in an effort to hit thegolf ball while swinging a circle, you've
got to bend over at your hipsjust a little bit to do that right
there. And then kind of lastly, Doug, if they can put that
together and finish on their front footleft leg for a righty, right leg
for a lefty like yourself, thatgives them great results very quickly. But
I understand it's a side on sportlike tennis, like baseball, where you've

(51:38):
got to swing the club that orracket in a start to or fashion to
hit it straight. That is monumentalinformation for them to understand because golf is
so not a logical game that andthat kec in business, thank god,
and it is so yeah, itis so not logical, So you have

(51:59):
to fill them in on the tidbitsand explain to them, you know,
the the hitting down the ball, goes up situation things of that nature,
and go from there. But butcircle bent over and finish on your front
leg. It's kind of where Igo with people, and you're going to
laugh, but to help them feelcircle, I don't start with a shorter
iron. I started off with ahybrid or even a five wood, because

(52:22):
those clubs I had my good friendJim Hardy shown me that years ago with
beginners, is to start off withthat on a teeth. Of course,
they can feel the shape of theswing, which is really really important.
From there, what's super important ifdon't want to give them hope. When
you go to a golf course andyou see a four hundred yard long hole

(52:44):
and you're told you've got to getit in four and four to get into
their rights, that's exactly right. What I tell them is is what most
people as beginners want to do isbreak one hundred as soon as they can.
Right. So there's three things thatwe've got to do to break one
hundred. Number one, we haveto hit it far enough to reach the
green or reach the holes. Inregulation. That means in one on a

(53:06):
part three, in two on apar four, and in three hundred par
five and again straight is not evenimportant. It's a distance. It's hitting
it far enough around the green andregulation. After that, you must pitch
it on the green in one tribeanywhere on the green, doesn't have to
get close to the hole, andthen two pots. If they can focus

(53:27):
on that formula of get it therein regulation, pitch it in one and
no more than two pots. Thattypically averages out to a score of one
overpar or bogie. Okay, ifyou make eighteen straight, I'm gonna test
Doug on air here. Already knowwhere you're going to, already know the
answer. Good. If I makeeighteen straight, bogie's on a par seventy

(53:47):
two? What oises you shot night? Yeah, that's great, that's no.
And it is for someone who juststarted right here. Get throw in
one little part, one par inthat whole mix, and now you're in
the eighties. And I'll do that. Even with people that have played for
a little bit, they just feellike you hiken and never break a hundred.
What's going on? Well, let'sfocus on the right formula and I've

(54:08):
got I've got to credit Jim Hardyagain on showing me that years ago as
a novice instructor, and it hasworked so well with people because you don't
want them to leave and get frustrated. We've got someone in Tasso who's excited
to play the game. We've gotto grow the numbers. And again we've
got to do things to help orsucceed at that. And if we make

(54:28):
the game seem surmountable, not insurmountable, right, then we'll con seem to
grow the game of things. We'llgo well with that. But if they
can remember the basic shape of theswing, getting a little bit then over
and finishing on their front foot andthen from there, hey, get there
in regulation one pitch and two putts. I mean, does the term Tommy

(54:49):
O'Brien here from out at Blackhawk, director of instruction out there, does the
term reasonable goal achievable goal ever comeinto your conversations Because you talk about people
wanting to break one hundred, didyou ever have somebody come out and say,
Okay, I want to break eighty? And then you have to welcome
back off of what? Off ofthat? Sure, sure, you give
them a little dose of reality. Here, here's the one that I get.

(55:13):
It's a Friday afternoon. Yeah,I've got a person who's brand new
of the game. I've got toplay golf with their boss on Monday,
Monday bramble, and they're scared todeath. I'm not kidding you. I'm
kidding. I'm not kidding. Canyou please show me how to play golf
between now and Monday? Yeah,I got two hours, that's right.

(55:34):
Well, and and and so whatwe do is like, look, I
can't to play golf between now andthen, but what I can do is
show you how to act and holdyourself in the presence of They don't care
if you don't play well, that'sright. They just don't want that,
don't want to be held up,okay, And if you can show them
a couple of things on the greenwhere if you get out a couple before
they do in the tournament, thenthen that'll be super helpful while having etiquette

(55:59):
while knowing where to stand, whento talk, when not to tell,
so on and so forth in thegame went there. So that's kind of
where I go with people like that. But yeah, you you have,
but I mean probably at the othertimes I've had that lesson. I've got
to play with my golf on Monday. I put my boss on Monday.
What do I do? And um, well, come sooner. But that's

(56:19):
why younger people, if they cantake that golf course in college, you
know, do do do your creditand get a little a little taste of
the game as opposed to waiting untilyou're a professional and and going from there.
It just you know, it justtakes you places that you can play
just a little bit of golf andnot to be a pro, but but
just to be able to play anduphold yourself and network with people. Huge

(56:43):
piece of it. And it's startingto get popular again now that COVID is
kind of coming down and not allboxed in as as we had been for
the last few years. So,I mean, golf was the sport during
COVID, and there was a perfectCOVID sports So I'm sure a lot of
people that did not play the learnedhow to play at that point. So
glad to have met. Yeah, but you're so right. We got to

(57:04):
make it achievable for people, andso that little formula I feel like has
been superb as far as um gettingpeople to play the game and get some
results. That's that's so key tome, dougust I don't want them just
to come and and and I meanI wanted to come and have a good
time, but I want something tochange. I want them to get better.
I want them scores to go down. It's not good enough for me

(57:27):
just to say, will you lookbetter? You know, I want them
to feel like they've had a they'vehad a good that's an improvements, huge
improvement. That ball hardly went intothe water. Yeah, that's right,
you almost missed the lake. That'sgreat. It's imp hardy. You tell
me all the time. You know, hitting it straight is overrated. You

(57:47):
can top it straight. Oh mygod, I don't even say that.
Oh, I don't even say that. Tommy. How if somebody's got to
play golf tomorrow in a scramble, how can they get with you today?
I can't just definitely go to thewest the webs not. Well, yeah
they can. They can go tothe website. Yeah, they can go

(58:08):
to the website at uh, tommyogolf dot com. That's got I've got
my phone number there and whatnot. But they can also call into Blackhawk right
there in Richmond, and they canget a hold of me as well,
Pisa Cake, no problem. Myplan, I don't know, depends on
what my wife says, you knowhow that works. But my plan is
to be out there this afternoon.I hope you seepe to see you on

(58:29):
the line there. I appreciate it, buddy, Will I actually be uh
at Galfson Country Club my daughter atthe US Open US Open qual Wednesday.
Awesome, so that'll be that'll befun. Just pray for good weather force
if you think you know Wednesday.I think you're in good shape. I
really do. I think you'll befine. So it's thirty six, so

(58:50):
oh yeah, I wish you well. Tommy gets great man and and Dad's
caddy and so pray for my feet. Yeah, a little bit of that

thank you too. Hey man, what a nice guy he is. He

(59:14):
is. He's been working with myson for a long time and doing a
very good job of it. BellevilleMeat Market wants you to come out and
sample this. Boy. You talkabout a lure to dangle in front of
a big old fish like me.How about sampling some of their cheddar cheese
pecan smoke sausage or maybe that doubleblack pepper pecan smoked sausage. You can

(59:34):
try it before you buy it thenext week or so. I think they're
gonna switch it over in about aweek to something else. Whatever. Is
available for sampling. Is gonna begreat. Just bring your wallet with you.
You're gonna want to buy some bringa list of what you want to
take home. Here's here's the plan. Go to the website, make a
list of what you want to bringhome, look at all the different products,
and then drive out with the familyon a beautiful sunday like this or

(59:58):
whenever you can. In an afternoon. Now that it's daylight so long,
drive out to Belleville, roll thewindows down, wait too, smell barbecue,
and then drive towards the smell.Go into Belleville Meat Market, drop
off the order you want to takehome with you, and then take seven
about seven steps to your left andorder up some lunch. Go out on
the patio where it's always about tendegrees to the better side of whatever the

(01:00:22):
outdoor temperature is. If it's ninety, it's gonna feel like seventy eight or
so under that patio. If it'sforty, it's gonna feel like fifty five
or so in the patio, andyou'll be comfortable and you can enjoy a
nice outdoors lunch while all that deliciousmeat product is getting put together for you
on special Now eighty five percent leaningground be three fifty nine a pound,

(01:00:44):
bult priced wrapped anyway you like. You got those homemade hot dogs and pulled
pork in the barbecue section there forlunch, you can do that. They
do custom processing on pigs and calvesall year long. You order a half
calf or a hind quarter to beprocess and they'll do that anyway you like.
Wild game processing year round as always. Now if Belleville Meet Markets on

bring it down, knock and letme here it again. Yeah, there
you go. Okay, that wasgood. That was a good ye high.
Actually i'm looking at I'm poring overemails here, very gray Mojo says,
up in Montgomery County in sixty eightdegrees, that would not be bad

(01:02:14):
for a round of golf today.I'm hoping I can play tomorrow. My
son's got finals and he gets outearly, so I've got to check with
my wife see if she can pickhim up or find him and otherwise find
him a ride home. Rudy weighedin about the PGA Championship on going up
there in New York. Yesterday, seventeen players started at plus five. That

(01:02:38):
was after the cut. This morning, forty three players starting at plus five
or higher. Yesterday was miserable forthose guys, absolutely miserable. Let me
get my let me get my leaderboardback up and talk about this. Brooks

(01:02:59):
kept somehow beat the house and shotsixty six to vault himself up into first
place. Down he only leaves bya shot over Victor Hobling and Corey Connors,
both of whom played very well yesterday. And I want to say I
want to say that it'll be oneof those three guys that finishes today and

(01:03:22):
takes care of business. But BrysonDeshambo also not playing badly. He shot
seventy yesterday, very working life, hobbling corners. Deshambo all shot seventy or
de Shambo shot yeah, seventy yesterday. Justin Rose shot sixty nine. I
watched sixty nine. I watched himhole out a shot from somewhere I can't
remember where, might have been abunker shot. Actually I know it was

(01:03:45):
a chip. I believe I watchedhim hold out. Scottie Scheffler went the
wrong way and shot seventy three yesterday. He finds himself at just two underpar
so he's got a bit of ahill to climb. But if anybody can
climb, it'd probably be Scott McElroyshoots one under yesterday. He's yeah,
he's ah, he's not gonna winit. I'm gonna go out and just

(01:04:10):
say that there's six guys in frontof him who all are capable of playing
at least as well as he,or if not, a stroke better,
and that's all it'll take for them. Michael blocked, the guy that everybody's
been watching he's gotten a lot ofscreen time for a guy nobody knew yesterday
seventy all three rounds seventy even par, even par, even par, and

(01:04:35):
we'll see what he can do.Justin Suh yesterday he comes in. He
shot in sixty eight or sixty nine, thirty sixty eight Friday and then gave
them all back with a seventy threeyesterday, so he also at even par.
And then it's Fleetwood, Jagger, perez Cole. There's a bunch of
guys. Yeah, there's a boatloadof guys at one plus one, and

(01:05:00):
as Rudy pointed out, well waymore of them at plus five or worse
than there were yesterday, where yeah, the cut line was plus five.
Oh my gosh, cut line wasplus five. Okay, Now we've got
Mark Hubbard at eighteen over after yesterdayhe shot seventy nine. He shot seventy

(01:05:24):
nine yesterday, Taylor Moore shot seventyeight. Justin Thomas shot seventy five,
Ben Taylor shot seventy eight. Iwonder if there were any eighties yesterday among
them the guys who made the cut. Now, at least there's none of
that, thank goodness. But yeah, it was just a sloppy, wet,

(01:05:44):
nasty mess. There was talk abouthow the players were having to watch
each other's putts already. Holy cow. Yeah, we kind of got to
the bottom pretty quick, didn't me. I spent a little extra time talking
to Tommy. I did not wantto ignore him. I did not want
to rush him, and because Iknow that he can and he and I

(01:06:05):
mentioned Glenn Shoulders over at Memorial. There's a handful of instructors I know around
town who I would trust with anybodyto bring them in, and Tommy's one
of those guys. So I wasglad we got to talk to him.
Timber Creek Golf Club that's another placeyou could go. David Pilser and his
crew down there at the instruction centerat timber Creek also very good at what

(01:06:26):
they do. After twenty three fiftyone in Friendswood, just a few miles
west of the golf Freeway, veryeasy to find, twenty seven holes,
which means they can get twice asmany people out and playing early in the
morning as most other courses can thanmost other courses can. And when you
get there, you'll see a facilitythat's been well managed and well cared for

(01:06:47):
for the better part of thirty yearsnow, it might be a little bit
more than thirty, even somewhere inthat range that people have been enjoying.
Timber Creek Golf Club. I've I'vebeen down there since they opened the doors.
Was one of the first to go. We Eddie Seffco and I went
down and reviewed the place for thepaper back when I was there, and

(01:07:09):
we both agreed that we played allthree nines that day, and both both
of us agreed that this was goingto be someplace special, and it's lived
up to that. Timber Creek Golfclubdot com. Plenty of room, they
know how to put on a goodshow. They know how to put on
a good party if you need toraise a bunch of money, and David
and his group can take care ofyou. On the teaching side. Timber

(01:07:30):
Creek Golfclub dot com. Such aself tea time right now. It's gonna
be a pretty day, Timber CreekGolf Club dot com. This is Sports
Talk seven ninety Houston sports online atSports seven ninety dot com. Backted The
Doug Pike showIn three already on SportsTalk seven ninety The Doug Pike Show,

(01:07:51):
I got an email earlier from Billy, I hope you're still listening, Billy.
Billy lives under a dark cloud.Apparently it wasn't. It wasn't bright,
bright sunny earlier. Now I'm lookingat a live shot at Galveson now
though, and it doesn't appear tobe a cloud in the sky. But
this morning, when I was talkingabout it being a pretty good day and

(01:08:12):
whatnot and having a bad sun angleon the water at Galvison, when I
was trying to read its clarity,Billy fired back, he's out in where
are you Garwood? I'm sorry,I couldn't remember. It brought off the
top and I had to look throughthere, said ninety nine percent cloud cover.
And it's been raining lightly off andon since about five forty five in

(01:08:33):
the morning. Tends to do thatevery dawn time after we cut the grass.
Oh man, God's way of keepingus occupied on our weekends. I
guess now, just a just ina bad run, I think. And

(01:08:55):
that cloud was hanging over me forabout the last two weeks. I had
several things take me by surprise, like, oh my gosh, what's going
on with this? Why is thishappening? Why did that happen how it
did, when it did where itdid, and I think I've pushed through
it. Knock on wood, hopefullyI have. Anyway, two five seven

(01:09:18):
nine, email me Dougpike and iHeartMediadot Com. I promised early in the
program, and I actually I promisedyesterday to resume a conversation I was having,
I believe with David about the legacyof Tiger Woods. And I don't
like to talk much about him nowbecause there are so many other players who
are actually out there grinding and playinghard and working hard and earning their earning

(01:09:44):
our respect and admiration in the gameof golf. But to give Tiger credit,
I think history will record him,at least in this nation we are.
We are a nation of what weused to be. We're not so
much anymore. Though. It'll beinteresting to see how this turns out.
I was going to say we're innature of forgivers, forgiving people for making

(01:10:05):
mistakes, but nowadays it seems likeif somebody makes a mistake, they just
instantly get roasted on social media andgetting all kinds of trouble for doing or
saying things that people find offensive orinappropriate. History will record Tiger I believe

(01:10:26):
as probably the greatest player up untilwhen the books are written. Nicholas and
Palmer earned every accolade they get.Nicholas still the one with the most majors.
And there are other comparisons you couldtry to make that you could in
which you could argue for any oneof those three guys. Almost but ultimately,

(01:10:53):
I think because of what he broughtto the game and who he brought
to the game, and then toshear no numbers of people who would would
stand in line all day and fiftypeople deep surrounding a green to watch him
make a put. The crowds likethat really weren't available early on for Nicholas

(01:11:17):
or Palmer. There just weren't thatmany people going to golf courses or going
to golf events, not nearly somany people as there would be now if
Tiger Woods showed up healthy Tiger Woodsshowed up to play somewhere. But there's
also there's gonna be that little andit's not gonna be a visible asterisk.
But until those of us who whowere here to hear what people said he

(01:11:44):
did and some of the things, some of the mistakes he made off the
golf course, those will hang overhim in some way until this generation's gone
and people are looking back without thatpart of the story to cloud the assessment
of him. Clearly one of thebest players ever to walk the planet and

(01:12:09):
probably going to ultimately be called thebest A lot of people already do.
But I can't help but bring twoor three other people into the conversation of
best golf forever, because with theequipment they had years ago to be able
to do what they did, that'spretty impressive. I would love to be
able to Oh gosh, I hateto even bring up artificial intelligence, but

(01:12:30):
imagine just plugging in the statistics andwhat the swing speeds had to be for
a Jack Nicholas, for example, who was one of the guys who had
absolutely no problem hitting the ball eitherway, but he was one of the
first he Bruce Litzky comes to mindon what I'm talking about here. Faders

(01:12:51):
of the golf ball, not drawersof the golf ball. They could do
it if they had to, buttheir their go tos were fades, and
that's something that's actually come back onekind of getting off the tiger woods pretty
quickly here, and I think that'sfair. Let's let's do that. Let's
move on from him and talk abouthow the game has changed, and that

(01:13:13):
with the drivers being built the waythey are, with producing virtually no spin,
for the best players, they canjust put that little bit of cut
into a shot and still move itdown there so far that they don't really
care whether it hits the fairway ornot. If you look at the numbers
of fairways hit. That used tobe a big deal in golf. If

(01:13:34):
you didn't hit the fairway and yougot into some of the rough on a
PGA or a US Open, anOpen championship over in Great Britain, if
you missed the fairway, you werein deep, deep trouble. Now they
you pick up forty yards by bombingit down there somewhere, And if you

(01:13:56):
miss the fairway, at least you'vegot a nine iron or a wedge in
your hands, versus maybe having six, seven, maybe a five iron even
in your hands. It's an interestinggame. It's turned into the quality of
the equipment now, the quality ofthe balls now, the consistency of everything.
Now. I grew up playing ballotof covered balls, and boy,

(01:14:18):
they if you mishit them at all, they spun like a top, they
came back. He went and hityour second shot, and you picked the
ball up on the grain to cleanit, and he found this big cut
in it from where a leading edgehad caught the ball. Destroyed them.
These balls can take a lot ofabuse right now and still keep going.

(01:14:39):
Might have it. I'll retire aball when it gets a cart path scuff
on it. I hate that.I know that's scuff equals friction, and
friction equals a change of path.And I don't need any I don't need
any help hitting it offline unless Ican figure out a way to make a
perfect scuff that brings it back tothe hole and set of away from the

(01:15:01):
hole. Haven't found that ball yet, haven't found a lot of my golf
ball. There are two places onthe golf course I play most often,
which is black Hawk, two placeswhere you would find most of my lost
golf balls. And I'm not gonnatell you where they are. But I've
actually had guys in that group ofold people with whom I play every now
and then tell me, oh,yeah, I found one of those one

(01:15:24):
of those iheartballs out there off thefairway of number whatever, the right side
of the fairway yeah, yeah, yeah, in the woods over there.
Yeah, okay, that's my miss. That's that's my achilles heel. That
one and then a t shot twoholes later on that golf course both drive
me nuts, and it's in myhead. That's something else that if you're

(01:15:45):
getting into golf new learn early onnot to dwell on mistakes, because as
a beginner especially, and even assomebody who's played the game as long as
I have and hit as many practiceballs as I have, I know that
I'm gonna make some bad mistakes, some bad swings on the golf course.

(01:16:06):
It's not what I do for aliving. If it was, i'd have
been impoverished years ago. But it'ssomething I do for enjoyment. And if
you're gonna enjoy golf, you haveto brush off ignore your mistakes. I've
known too many people who throw clubs, who slam clubs into the ground.

(01:16:28):
I'll swat the clubhead on the grounda little bit, not even enough really
to make a dent, even indamp ground, though, if I make
a bad swing, just to kindof remind myself not to do that again.
But I don't know that I've everthrown a club, but I've seen
people do it. I've seen peoplethrow them a long ways. I watch

(01:16:48):
somebody I know pretty well throw oneup into the canopy of a very tall
pine tree, enough so that Ithought, holy cow, I've never seen
a club go that high for AndI reminded him that unless his business card
said PGA Tour player, that reallywas unnecessary. And even then, those

(01:17:10):
guys, one of the reasons theyplay as well as they do is because
they can totally ignore the shot theyjust hit. Two steps after they hit
it, they hit it, theyhand the club back to the caddy and
they start walking, and two orthree steps into that walk to wherever that
ball landed, they've already forgotten whatthey just did and they're focused on the
next shot. That's the one thatcounts the most every round you place that

(01:17:33):
next shot. Holy cow. We'realready up to time to get out again,
all right, I'll do that.I'll try and get this break done
on time so I can more orless put reserves replace the balance in the
universe. Is that fair enough withyou? I missed the shot at the
trash can. I'll go get thatpiece of paper when we go to the
break shooters corner, Palmer Highway twentynine Street in Texas City, very few

(01:17:55):
miles off the Golf Freeway going east, not like the Timber Creek, but
east going to Shooters Corner, whereyou will find a fantastic selection of new
and pre owned guns. You've gotammo in there, you've got optics,
you've got reloading supplies, targets, what else you name it, it's in

you need a part for a gunthat you have and nobody else can seem
to manage to get that part foryou. Check in with Shooters Corner.

and he had to keep on themove. Everybody was after him.
Yeah, that song was performed byJohnny Cash, of course, but it

(01:21:33):
was written by shel Silverstein, who'sa children's author. He'd been Oh that's
right, yeah, we was. There was at least one book. And
I'll recognize the title. If youtell me where the sidewalk in? Yeah,
yeah, yeah, that's it.There you go. Interesting. I
didn't know that fun fact to noone tell right there, Thank you very
much. All right, let mego back to the great out of doors

(01:21:54):
for a minute. By the way, poor Billy, he's ten inches of
rain in the last two weeks.Ten And I know we got a lot
around my house, but not wedidn't get ten inches of rain. I'll
guarantee you that. Oh alas poorBilly. At one point he was actually

(01:22:14):
he and his family were landlocked becauseall the little roads around them were had
water flowing over them so strongly thateven the trucks were having a hard time
getting in and out, so theyjust had to just ride it out.
This is something I wanted to getto this weekend, and I'm about to
get out of time, so I'mgonna go to it right now. The

(01:22:35):
Fishing Wildlife Service is championing the EndangeredSpecies Act. It celebrated its fiftieth anniversary
this past Friday, and I willgive them a big thumbs up for the
recovery of the Kemp's Ridley turtle, which I think is pretty cool. It

(01:22:55):
was listed as endangered all the wayback in nineteen seventy when it was on
the brink of extinction. And nowif you go fish to Packery Channel down
there at Corpus, you can't hardlycast a line into the water without hitting
a turtle. They're all up anddown those rocks, which is fantastic.
And by the way, if you'redown there to go fishing, do not

(01:23:17):
touch one of those turtles. Donot do anything with or two one of
those turtles. That is a federaloffense and they take it very seriously.
But the downside to Endangered Species essay, the Endangered Species Act, which has
been around, I think it cameinto being, well it's this fiftieth anniversary,

(01:23:38):
so what seventy three. The downsideto it is that it has been
used as always, there's good andbad to anything, and it's been used
over the years to really alter theuse of a lot of private land,
taking away people's abilities to grow theircrops, or to build structures on places

(01:24:02):
to save animals that ultimately we're probablygoing to go extinct anyway. And I'm
not I don't want any species speciesto disappear from this planet. But I
also am smart enough to know andhave read enough to know that there are
I want to say, a dozen, maybe two dozen species on this earth

(01:24:24):
that vanish almost daily, that justthe last ones just go away. They're
being replaced by other, stronger, fitter species are being moved out, and
that's been going on since time began. There aren't any more dinosaurs, there
aren't any more dodo birds. Thereare a lot of species carrier pigeons,

(01:24:46):
all kinds of things that have justvanished. They've just vanished, and nothing
we can do in many cases, can save them. And I I feel
like, as the primary species onthe planet, it's great for us to

(01:25:06):
try to save every species there is, but in some cases you just got
to be a little careful. Therewas an overpass being built or an underpass.
They were going to do an underpassin San Antonio on the I think
it was their loop over there. They were gonna do an underpass that would
greatly alleviate a major traffic issue.Just one underpass, just let the cars

(01:25:29):
go under this road and voom, boy, here we go, and somebody
over there produced. I don't knowthat there is hard evidence yet that says
that it was there. But somespider, some rare spider. They found
one. They found one of theserare spiders and shut down that entire project

(01:25:50):
and turned it into an overpass, which then cost a city about I don't
know, it was like five orsix times as much money to build the
overpass asks to protect one spider. Now, if they found two, if
they found a male and female, that might have helped the species. But
to find one, I'm almost notsure that that meets the level of preservation

(01:26:17):
interest necessary to make it harder onpeople for years to come. I just
I want to I'd love to saveevery animal on the planet, but I
know that we can't because we arechanging the planet every day, and we're
gonna keep changing the planet. Andit's not just the United States either,

(01:26:40):
it's the whole world. And ifthe whole world's not on board, then
a lot of these efforts that arebeing made to go to a solar and
electric solar power, electrical power, wind power, all of these things are
going to be kind of moot points. If we're the only ones playing the
game. All it's going to dois put us farther and farther behind and

(01:27:00):
of some very dangerous, very dangerouscountries. Right now, So I'll be
I'll be the first to sign upfor responsible species management and responsible care for
species. But when it starts dippinginto taking farmland out of our country's inventory,

(01:27:23):
or or making things cost way moremoney than they should, then I
have to step in and really thinkabout it. It would take a much
stronger case to convince me that it'sright to to shut something down. And
that's start that's been going on fora long time, and it's been used

(01:27:44):
and it's been abused that the EndangeredSpecies Act has been the subject of many
cases of abuse against two private partiesbickering back and forth over something, and
then all of a sudden, thepeople who want to shut down something they
just don't like magically find some endangeredspecies there. I'm not saying it happens

(01:28:08):
often, but it does happen,and that's I don't know. I just
I promised myself I would talk aboutthis and I have, and it's kind
it's very frustrating to watch some ofthe misuse of things that are so beneficial.
Overall beneficial, yeah, probably so. But the ten percent that's done

(01:28:29):
with other than the greater good inmind, that bothers me. It bothers
me to no end. All right, let me lighten this up here real
quick. Um, one more, not that one? Oh, pop,
quiz adam. What do you thinkwas the first animal we know that was
on Earth? And this is basedon science and and fossils, so I

(01:28:50):
don't know how they can claim it'sfirst. But what do you think it
was? Like some bacteria that wasa jelly well, an animal, a
jellyfish. A jellyfish it's called whatis it called? The comb jellyfish apparently
started seven hundred million years ago somemornings at my age when I wake up.
That's how old I feel, aboutseven hundred million, give or take

(01:29:10):
a million. All right, Igotta get out of here, have a
wonderful Sunday, a wonderful week.I will be back on the air on
Tuesday at noon on KPRC for fiftyplus. I go live Tuesday through Friday.
There, I'll take tomorrow Monday's off, then i'll be back here next
Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy your timein the outdoors. Please do it responsibly,

(01:29:30):
do it safely, and take akid fishing if you get a chance.
Will you. That'll make me feelgood in you too. That's it
for now, Thanks, good job, Adam. Audios.
