Hey, it's Jennifer Jones Lee.You're listening to KFI a M six forty
wake up call on demand on theiHeartRadio app. You are in the home
stretch. Here's Jennifer Jones Lee withyour Friday morning wake up call. I'd

(00:21):
like to say you're welcome or daynada on the Cinco dam Mio, because
this is the home stretch and everytime I hear the announcer guys say that
on a Friday morning, I'm like, whoa, I know, at eight
all surround sleep. So Monday you'restill kind of refreshed from the weekend.

(00:43):
Right Tuesday is when the lack ofsleep suck fest starts. Tyler feels it's
Wednesday. Now Thursday. You're like, Hey, I'm crest in that hill
and Friday home stretch. Tomorrow morningwe get to sleep in, which is

(01:03):
why I say you're welcome. HappySinko to Mayo. Do you have anything
fun planned? It's a Friday.I mean it's you know, usually it
always falls during the week somehow, but man, on a Friday night.
But can you imagine if you tryand go to a restaurant, a Mexican
restaurant tonight to celebrate how long thoseweights are gonna be. I may celebrate

(01:26):
by driving through Miguel's Junior, oroh, there's a taco bell right next
to it, and I think there'sa Del Taco across the street. Yeah,
it might be my Sinco de Mayo. But you know what, at
least I'm in the spirit right Andisn't it true that they don't celebrate Sinco
de Mayo in Mexico. I've alwaysfound that hilarious. Welcome to your wake

(01:49):
up call. I'm Jennifer Jones Lee. This is your Sinko to Mayo.
We have a huge commercial building thathas been burning in Commerce, LA.
Police have fatally shot one of threeguys involved in a high speed chase downtown,
and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department saysit's stepping up patrols to catch people
who drive drunk or drugged over thisCinco de Mayo. We're going to talk

(02:12):
about what they're calling political brinksmanship.ABC's Karen Travers will join us and see
if there's any movement at all onthis debt limit extension. Who blinks first,
that's essentially this political brinksmanship. Sowe'll get into that with her in
just a few minutes. Let metell you more about this huge commercial building

(02:32):
that's on fire in Commerce. Bigflames and heavy smoke could be seen coming
from the building. This is onFlotilla Street this morning. It's not clear
what type of material has been fuelingthis fire. Firefighters are working to protect
buildings nearby. People in Carson andCompton are cleaning up from two small tornadoes

(02:53):
again that came with this recent rain. Both were rated and e F zero.
However, that's still a rating andthey were strong enough to damage cars
and buildings. Yesterday. They broughtdown some power lines, knocked over at
least one big old tree. Windswere estimated up to seventy five miles an
hour. LA police have fatally shotone of three guys involved in a high

(03:16):
speed chase Downtown. Officers started chasingthree people in a car just after midnight
near Manchester in the one ten freeway. The LAPD says officers noticed one of
them had a gun. The drivereventually got on the ten, got off
at Maple, and all three bailed. At some point two officers opened fire.

(03:36):
The injured man died at the hospital. Well the closure of those two
hotels we were talking about in LagunaBeach is indefinite. This was after those
fights between nearly two dozen people. And don't forget it was also between security
guards. Fights broke out between twoseparate security teams, where police say one
of the twenty people involved was arrestedfor battery. City manager Charade Dupuis says

(03:59):
fight started in the lobby of theHotel Laguna and later moved into the fourteen
West Hotel. Among the security guards, se role were armed and they were
each trying to take over the propertiesand the possession of the properties. Dupuis
says she had to shut down thehotels a day after the fights on Wednesday
for public safety. The city saysthere's no date set for when the hotels

(04:23):
will reopen. Chris Adler Kafie News. Attorneys for Eric and Lyle Menendez say
new evidence is grounds to have theirconvictions for killing their parents in Beverly Hills
overturn. Karen Travers, good morningto you political brinksmanship. Who's playing it
or is everyone playing it? Imean, I think it depends on who

(04:44):
you ask. But yesterday we wereasking the President Budget Director so along the
young questions about this whole debt ceilingstandoff, and she made the most strong
case yet we've heard from the WhiteHouse about what she says is made up
drama and political brinksmanship, and shewas saying that this is a problem of
the people's own making, the peoplebeing Congress. She said she could write

(05:05):
a bill in five minutes, putit on the floor, and get lawmakers
today to avoid a government default. She knows her way around Capitol Hill.
She was a budget and appropriations aperson up there before she's taking to the
White House. The lawmakers up thereknow her very well, and she was,
you know, kind of explaining allof this and clean plain english of

(05:26):
what they need to do and whythe White House insists that it's Congress that
needs to just pass this clean debtfeeling increase and then the President will have
the conversation about spending cuts. Butyou know, one thing that she did
wiggle a little bit on, orsuggests the wiggle room, is that there
could be a conversation about a shortterm debt limit increase. So you know,

(05:49):
again that incomplete comparison of like yourcredit card, give yourself another increase
for just a couple months so youcan figure out how to pay the bill
and then work on the bigger problem. That's kind of what she suggested yesterday
might be on the table, orat least it's not off the table.
And that's interesting because remember the presidentsand saying he's not negotiating on the debt

(06:11):
ceiling. That kind of indicates theremight be a little bit of negotiation that
could take place next week in thatmeeting with the House Speaker. And that's
what Republicans have said, right thatthey would be willing one more time to
give this sort of extension. AndI think what Kevin McCarthy say, like
one percent, but then that wouldbe it. He wouldn't want anymore after
that. If they can at leastcome to like, all right, I'll

(06:33):
give a little, you give alittle. I mean, that's how negotiations
go. So if we're in thatthat spot right now, I think that
does give us hope. Yeah, except you know, it's still just you
know, depends on how long itgoes. If they're just trying to avoid
the default in early June and theyraise the debt limit through a number that
only gets you through the summer, they still to deal with all these same

(06:55):
issues before the end of tea.Yeah, it's just yeah, yeah,
it's like it's to avoid the creditdownratings, to send a message to Wall
Street that they're trying to solve theproblem. Because this is another thing that
came up. You probably remember thisfrom a decade ago when this was all
happening back then or in the Obamaadministration, there was the credit downgrade even
though there wasn't a default, becauseyou know, this doesn't look good.

(07:18):
It's really troubling. And that's aconcern right now that even if they figure
out the way to avoid this andthey solve this crisis right now, it
still could have severe ramifications for theeconomy. And that question came up yesterday
about how concerned they are about this, what planning are they doing for that
potential? And Young said, youknow, she's an optimist, then she

(07:41):
hopes to find the fast to avoidit. But you know, you do
get a sense that they are veryconcerned that that still is a potential.
Well sure, and I think tooif we do remember what happened before.
It's also the optics of it,based on which party decides to blink first.
Do they look like the weaker partyor does the other party look like
the bad guy because they refuse toblink, right, and I think you

(08:05):
know, whoever blinks, of course, spins it in a way that they
don't look like they blinked. Andeverybody tries, you know, to put
their own political messaging on this, but somebody has to and that's the questions
that have been framed of like whois the one that blinks here? How
do you what are the off rampsto all of this? You know,
big meeting next Tuesday at the WhiteHouse with the President and Kevin McCarthy.

(08:26):
I think you can expect we willnot have cameras in that meeting, but
because of the style of this WhiteHouse, but hopefully we get to hear
from the lawmakers after the meeting theycome out and give us a sense of
what went on during those discussions. All right, Karen, thank you so
much. Happy sinco de mayo. Are you guys doing anything fun? You?
Well, we've got jobs report todayat the White House and now the

(08:48):
President has a meeting with his Investingin America cabinet, so very exciting,
all right, cool. In fact, I'm going to talk about the jobs
report coming up at five twenty,so thank you. That'll be my celebration
as well. Have a goodbye dotyou next week. Thanks ABC's Karen Traverse.
All right, let's get back tosome of these stories coming out of
the KFI twenty four hour newsroom.New York Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortes,

(09:15):
this is the weirdest thing. Isteaming up with who've all people? Would
you think? Or another lawmaker?Okay, Alexandria Ocasio Cortes is teaming up
with Florida Republican Congressman Matt Gates.I'm sorry, Wait what I had to

(09:39):
reread that this morning went away?Wait, they are teaming up. They're
trying to ban Congress from trading stocks. These two are actually part of a
group of lawmakers who say the abilityto individually trade stocks stop the public's trust
in government. Ocasio Cortez says, when Congress has access to classified information,

(10:01):
it should not be trading on iton the stock market. Kind of agree
with that because that feels like insidertrading or something. There was bipartisan support
for the issue last year, butnothing was introduced. Then they put this
updated bill on the floor. Ithink it was Tuesday. The owner of
a dance studio in Anaheim has beencharged with sexually assaulting six girls. Mark

(10:26):
Chariva, sorry, that's Schabarria wasarrested earlier this week. He's charged with
fifteen counts of ludas on a childyounger than fourteen, and other charges.
All of them are felonies. Hehas pleaded not guilty. Well, a
guy who missed his flight from LasVegas to lax is facing felony charges for

(10:46):
allegedly telling officials there might be abomb in his luggage. Was this so
that the plane wouldn't go? I'mso confused. Oh why the Jetboulue plane
was evacuated yesterday when it arrived inLa Nothing explosive was found in the search,
all right, So, these attorneysfor Eric and law Menendez say new

(11:09):
evidence is grounds to have their convictionsfor killing their parents in Beverly Hills overturned.
The brothers legal team says the evidencesupports the brothers claims the boys were
sexually assaulted by their father and fearedfor their lives. Attorney's point to two
key pieces of evidence versus and apparentletters sent from one of the brothers to
his cousin a few months before theboys shot and killed their parents. The

(11:30):
letter reads, I never know whenit's going to happen, and it's driving
me crazy. The other piece ofevidence's recent sexual assault allegations a member of
the boy band Manudo has made againstthe brother's father. The Menendez brothers were
found guilty of murdering their parents innineteen eighty nine. They were sentenced to
life without parole. Blake Trolley kaif I News the OC Sheriff's Department.

(11:50):
The Medal of Valor award recipient thisyear include a deputy who saved a baby,
a swat team that saved a motorcyclist, and a doctor who saved a
church. The incident that day washorrific. Ocy Sheriff Don Barne says doctor
John Chang was killed when he stoppedan active shooter last year at a church
in Laguna Woods. Without the actionsof doctor Chang, who was a hero,

(12:13):
undoubtedly many more lives would have beenlost. Sergeant Jackie Gray's team was
recognized for dozens of human trafficking arrests. The people who work for the victims
and to you recognized for it is. It's one of those experiences in lawnforce
that makes you happy that you doyour job. Other awards yesterday include a
deputy who was hit and dragged bya drunk driver and an investigator who helped
prevent a mass violence attack in Anaheim. Corbin Carson, ka if I News

(12:35):
and just a reminder. The RiversideCounty Sheriff's Department says it's stepping up patrols
to catch people who drive drunk ordrugged. Over this and go. De
Mayo. Officials say people planning onhaving a couple of drinks should have a
designated driver or call an uber ora lift. It doesn't matter. A
misdemeanor d Y conviction in California canresult in finds up to ten grand gael

(12:58):
time probation. Intoxicator drivers are alsolooking at state prison time if someone is
killed. So you know what, how easy is it set aside in your
budget tonight? An extra I don'tknow, twenty thirty bucks to pay for
your uber or lift and then you'rehome free. I don't know if you

(13:18):
have seen this huge fire at thiscommercial building in commerce. This is what
we've been talking about in traffic.Robert was saying, it's not really super
visible, doesn't seem to be makingany impact, but wholely cow. These
intense flames and heavy smoke can beseen from at least Flotilla Street, which
is kind of around it. Butwe're trying to figure out what kind of

(13:41):
material is in this building and it'syou know, it's a commercial building,
so who that knows what's in there, but that's fueling this fire. Firefighters
have been working to protect buildings nearby. It's just it's huge. And LA
police have fatally shot one of threeguys involved in this high speed chase downtown.
They were doing this chase, thenthey see a guy with a gun.

(14:03):
Things go squorely after that, andthe Riverside County Sheriff's Department says it's
stepping up patrols to catch those peoplewho go to those aforementioned bars and start
spilling drinks and then think it's agreat idea to drive drunk or drugged over
Sinco de Mayo probably call an uberor lyft. Caleb Silver, investopedia dot
COM's editor in chief, Good morningto you. We are waiting for a

(14:26):
jobless report about to drop any momentnow right, Well, you said jobless,
Hopefully it's a job gains report that'sstring around nine minutes. That is
the April jobs report. We're expectingaround one hundred and eighty thousand jobs to
have been added last month, alittle bit of a slowdown from March,
which is two hundred and thirty sixthousand, and we've been averaging three hundred
and forty five thousand jobs a monthin the through the first quarter. But

(14:48):
job growth is slowing a little bit. Unemployment ratemate tick up. It's a
bit too as more folks are nowlooking for work. May be concerned that
the job market is going to getmuch weaker towards the back half of the
year. Okay, watch the Fedsraise the interest rate another quarter percent.
Now you're saying that there's a bitof a softening when it comes to the
jobs numbers. Does this mean thatwe're starting to come to some sort of

(15:09):
balance. Yeah, Balance would bethe gains of about one hundred thousand jobs
a month. That shows sort ofa healthy economy. That's how many workers
sort of enter the workforce on averageevery month. We've been way over that.
And we've been way over that. Why because employers, especially in the
services part of the economy restaurants, bars, hotels, etc. They've been

(15:30):
trying to add workers back because that'swhere the demand is right now. Also
a little bit in government and healthcare. But you've also been hearing, especially
out in California about layoffs and techcompanies about layoffs and some retail jobs.
So you're seeing some softness in partsof the economy, but there's still a
lot of demand for workers in theservices part of the economy. Okay,
when it comes to how the stockmarket is reacting, I know, I

(15:50):
think it was Tuesday before we hadthe interest rate hike that they, you
know, the stock market analysts knewthat it was going to happen. The
next day, a man, thatstock market went down fast. Now where
are we what can we expect nowand what can we expect it to look
like based on the report that comesout this morning. Yeah, So the

(16:10):
jobs report is a rear view mereindicator, and that we're looking at last
month's job gains. But what itdoes tell us is whether or not the
Fed's interest rate hikes. And they'vebeen hiking rates steadily ten times in a
row. Now we've got interest ratesas high as they've ever been since two
thousand and seven. Has that slowjob growth and has slowed more importantly wage
growth, because believe it or not, the FED wants to slow job growth
and wage growth. Why because aswages keep rising, employers have to pay

(16:33):
their employees more and they pass thoseextra costs onto consumers. Consumers at some
point are going to pull back onspending. It really hasn't happened yet,
but consumer spending is seventy percent ofour GDP, so this is all connected.
And that if where job gains aretoo strong, the Fed's going to
have to keep raising rates. Andif the FED keeps raising rates, that
puts pressure on the stock market. That's the balance we're in right now.
That said, even though it's beenchopping lately, the stock market, the

(16:56):
SMP five hundred up six percent thisyear, the NASDAC up around eighteen percent
this year. So while we're kindof worrying about everything, stock market's kind
of quietly grounded a little bit higher, except for the Dow Jones industrials,
which is flat for the year. And when it comes to going back to
consumer spending, is that does thefact that a lot of times when it
comes to consumer spending, we areputting it on our credit cards with these

(17:18):
you know, just light upticks everytime that the Fed increases the interest rates,
at what point do you think thatconsumers will start to go, hey,
wait a minute, these even minimumpayments are getting a little bit too
high for me. I gotta pullback. Yeah, we've been, but
we don't break. And credit carddebt is at an all time high right
now. The average debt per baror somewhere around five thousand bucks. So

(17:40):
we haven't broken yet. Even thoughaprs on credit cards are north of twenty
percent, you would think that wouldcause a pullback, but we're still doing
a lot of revenge spending, especiallyin travel right especially in eating out.
And we have inflation the deal with, so we're having to spend more at
the grocery store every time we goshopping right now, So we haven't broken
yet. What will happen is ifwe see more layouts and a recession or

(18:00):
it's very personally, if you loseyour job, you're going to start spending
less. If you see your neighborsor family members facing economic difficulties, you
pull back on spending. We haven'thad that broadly yet. If that happens,
that's going to send us into arecession. The question is how long
will that last? All right,Caleb, thank you so much. Have
a great weekend. You two allright, thanks, see you later.
That is investopedia dot COM's editor inchief, Caleb Silver. All Right.

(18:25):
I don't know if I remember watchingPrince Charles, and at that time it
was Diana. I remember laying onthe floor when I was a little kid.
I must have been like, Idon't know, three or four.
I don't know why I remember thisso vividly. Maybe because I've never seen

(18:45):
a queen before, or it couldhave been the fact that I was wiggling
a loose tooth. And I rememberlaying on the floor wiggling a loose tooth
with my mom on the couch, and we were watching, you know,
as the horse drawn carry took, you know, the prince and princess at
that time, Diana and Charles downthe road, and she was waving so

(19:07):
beautifully, and I thought, man, I could be a toothless princess someday.
No, I don't know if Iactually thought that, but it is
true I was wiggling a tooth. And now this weekend we have the coronation
of King Charles the Third and QueenCamilla, and I've been looking at some

(19:27):
of the things that you know goalong with the coronation, So we're gonna
have all the pomp and circumstance thatyou can possibly imagine for tomorrow. And
then I was looking up some ofthe I don't know history on it.
So if you go to I gotthis off of Royal dot UK, which
is the official Royal's website, andso there's a part on it that is

(19:51):
the history of this and one hundredthings that you may or may not know
about it. About him specifically, did you know that he's an author?
Yeah? I didn't even know that. He wrote a book based on stories
he told his younger brothers when hewas growing up. He's also written books
on the natural world and the environment. He's a painter, did you know

(20:17):
that? And that his watercolors havebeen displayed in the Royal Academy's nineteen eighty
seven Summer exhibition after it was submittedanonymously, which I think that's important because
when I first read that, ohit was in the summer exhibition, well
does he's the king? So ifsomebody calls and says, hey, Charles
stick figure is here, somebody's goingto put it up. But it was

(20:40):
submitted anonymously and it still made itin all right, let's see I did
not know this, and why wedid not have this footage, I don't
know, because it should be somewhereand I'm gonna have to try and find
it. His majesty has presented theweather forecast on the BBC and apparently this

(21:00):
took place during a visit to theBBC's Scotland studios in twenty twelve. Now
who sets that up? And ifyou are the news director of the BBC
and you get a call, they'relike, hey, yeah, I'm the
spokesperson for at that time, PrinceCharles, wouldn't you say to yourself?
Yeah right. It's like one timeI remember former President Clayton called in the

(21:25):
newsroom and I remember sitting there gettingthe call and he was like, Hi,
this is Bill Clinton calling for thehost that was on after me,
and I literally said yeah right, and he goes, no, I'm I'm
I'm scheduled to be on with him, and I all of a sudden,

(21:47):
you know that voice, right,And I went, oh, I just
said yeah right to the president. But I have a feeling that probably was
what happened when he do we haveI've got to find that forecast. If
I do, I will on socialmedia jjl KFI on Twitter and Instagram.
In nineteen eighty, the King rodein the steeple chase and finished second.

(22:10):
I mean, we knew the guywas in equestrian and had played polo all
throughout his life. I think upuntil like the early two thousands he was
still very very active in it.Andy likes the trees. The King often
carries out tree planting ceremonies, that'shis thing apparently, and after planting each
tree, his Majesty gives a brancha friendly shake to wish them well.

(22:37):
Mike, it's interesting. Now.The other thing that we have that is
Michelle's putting up on the website forus KFI AM six forty dot com is
the Coronation Keiche, which I lookedat the recipe for and I was talking
with our actually a producer A andRobin Berto Lucci, our program director yesterday.

(23:00):
I think it sounds fine except whereit's a kiche that has heavy cream,
all the cheese, all the eggs, all that kind of stuff.
But then the two things that threwme. It has beans in it.
Broad beans which are kind of likesoya beans, butterbeans like the big old
white beans, beans and a kicheand tarragon. Anyway, I'm kind of
thinking about making it this weekend andbringing it in Monday for the show.

(23:23):
So guys, get your taste budsready, but we will have hopefully some
Coronation flavor when we talk about iton Monday morning. Tyler scrambled and I
now have the link to Prince Charlesgiving the weather forecast. It's just just
it just throws you for a curve, like wow, all right. Anyway,

(23:45):
it's up from May eleventh, twentytwelve, so almost exactly what eleven
years ago, so you can seehow well he delivers a weather forecast.
He shakes the limbs of trees tosay good luck and he gives the weather
forecast. He also plays piano. You're welcome, Dean Sharp, good morning

(24:06):
to you. Did you know allthose coronation little tidbits. I did not,
but none of them surprised me.Actually, in fact, I would
think, you know, keishe isa French food and so leave it to
the British to thumb their noses atthe at French cuisine by filling a kiche
with like the heaviest food possible.Yeah, let's just put maybe we should

(24:29):
put beans in it? Yeah, who'd idea was that? Fill it with
beans? I agree, that's thepart where I went anyway, Yes,
and you're right, and the Frenchare probably like, oh please, it's
supposed to be light and fluffy andyou know, with a few little bits
of I don't know, cheese andbroccoli or you know, the what are
they the ham and cheese or somethinglike that, but beans please, Dean,

(24:52):
welcome back. How was your tripto Italy? Oh? It was
terrible, just you know, youknow Italy. It was just awful.
Every minute was a torture. I'veonly seen a couple of pictures of your
trip, and it looks like youguys had an amazing time. What an
experience. It was great. Yeah, we had a lot of fun.

(25:14):
You have you been there before? And I ask you this from like a
literally, I bet you look atwhen you go to different places like that,
you're looking at the architecture and thedesign. I mean, that's just
who you are. And when yougo there and you see this sort of
thing, and in so much historyis in the way that things are designed.
I bet it's almost a little bitof like an overload for you,
sensory overlap it is, so it'ssuch an overload. I was telling Conway

(25:40):
last night. At some point aboutfive minutes in, I had to start
like shutting down parts of my brainjust because because you know, I mean
when when you're walking through a countrya town where every building is, you
know, like six hundred years old. That means everything has a story,
everything as a timeline and a trajectoryfrom some architectural era of the past,

(26:06):
and you just can't. You can't. It's it's like architectural history with a
fire hose. You just can't.You can yeah, And so so you
gotta get really like meant, Ihave to, I have to get really
mentally selective about what it is thatI'm thinking about, because anybody and you
just walk up to some door, you just knock on a door, and
this old woman answers, and you'relike, Hey, does this place have

(26:29):
a story? She's like, areyou kidding me? Right? Right?
Well, I'm glad that you gotthat opportunity. But I was thinking about
you when you were gone, becausethat's your thing. You like to look
at the bones of the house, you know, and then kind of go
from there, and I thought,oh my gosh, I can't imagine somebody
like you with that eye or thatmindset going to a place like Italy,

(26:52):
you know, somewhere like that thatjust has this incredible history and what that
must have been like. So I'mso glad you had that opportunity. But
welcome back. We're glad you're home, and I'm glad to be home too.
You know what, we work reallyhard, Tina and I at having
a home and having a life thatit's fun to vake kate from, but
it's not a necessity, and we'realways happy. When we start to,

(27:14):
you know, feel the fatigue ofa long vacation, it's like, you
know, well we're ready, Yeah, I'm home, yep. It makes
you appreciate it more, all right. So a lot of people, especially
kind of as we get out ofthe crummy weather and it starts to become
springtime, you start to think like, han, you need to do a
little spring cleaning. And then alsoyou've been cooped up in your house all
winter and you've had the opportunity togo, Man, I really need to

(27:37):
change that, or I really let'sknock down that wall. Something like that,
but when it comes to remodeling, sometimes our ideas don't necessarily go along
with our budget, and then sometimesyou don't feel like you and your partner
are on the same page. There'sa lot that goes into it. But
you've got some tips for us tomake a remodel go right. Yeah,
you know, it's remodeling season, and I don't know exactly why it gets

(28:02):
titled that. I think though,it's because the average person kind of wakes
up here in midspring and says, wait a second, now it's time to
change something about our house. Andthat's completely the legit, and it's great,
But unfortunately then everybody starts looking atthe clock and they're like, wait,

(28:22):
well, we gotta get going rightnow because springs about to end,
summer's going to be here, andthen fall. Have this all done by
the holidays, And let me tellyou, unless it's just a quick little
design overlay or just a quick refresher, that's just not going to be realistic.
That's why we're going to spend thisweekend, Tomorrow's show and Sunday handing

(28:48):
out the kind of kind of remodelingadvice that people just don't normally get to
hear a lot of wisdom coming forwardfrom experience. The main thing I would
say, I don't know, wecould start anywhere, but I'll just put
it this way. What's the biggestlesson you can learn if you're getting ready
to remodel a house, slow yourrole. Just slow it down for a

(29:15):
number of reasons. Number one,if you were to start planning today,
and again, the chances of yougetting it all wrapped up and done at
this point by the holidays a majorremodel virtually non existent. Okay, I
don't want to, you know, rain on anybody's parade, but just the
idea. If you've got to submitplans, if you've got to pull permits,

(29:37):
if you've got to pull contractors together. Again, unless it's a very
small job, it's likely going toroll right into the holidays. Now you
know. If you're ready for that, great, But just understand the best
way to remodel a house is tospend the most important resource you have to
do it, and that is notmoney. It's time. Time when your

(30:03):
most important resource. And when youtalk about this, I know I have
zero patience. I want everything doneyesterday, and so this is one that
I think I would have to likeconstantly tell myself when I go to bed
at night, like it's okay,it's okay, you know, don't worry
about the fact that this isn't goingas quickly as you had planned. You
talk about the iron triangle, andthat's one of the things that I loved

(30:26):
about that and I'll let you expandon it, but time being one of
those sides of this triangle. Andit's so important to keep that in mind
because we do all expect magic tohappen in our house, to magically transform
overnight. That is not the case. Yeah, it's not the case,
nor do you want it to be. And you know, we have this

(30:47):
kind of fast food mentality. Americansdon't realize this, but we we overlay
it onto everything and it doesn't workwell. It doesn't mesh up well with
something that you're trying to do toyour home that you want to last for
years and years and years. AndI always tell people this, slow it

(31:08):
down. The extra few weeks thatyou take right now, even though it's
driving you crazy, But the extratime that you take right now, two
or three years from now, whenyou are living in the perfect remodel,
you won't care anymore. Okay,But if you rush it, as so
many people do, you'll care everyday because you'll be staring at the rushes,

(31:32):
the mistakes, the oversights, allof those kinds of things. And
you know what you brought up mytrip to Italy And if you want to
learn one lesson from a place thathas some of the most beautiful architecture in
the world, Like you know, here's a cathedral, Oh my god,
just stunning, jaw dropping. Howlong did it take to build that?
About two hundred and fifty years rightnow, I'm not suggesting that you take

(31:55):
that amount of time to read, but that's the point. So you mentioned
the iron triangle. There is aniron triangle in the world of construction and
design. Imagine a triangle in yourmind. Those three sides. We're gonna
name those three sides. One sideis cost, the next is time,

(32:15):
and the third quality. Now hereis the rule. You will choose two
sides of that triangle that you wantfor your project, and you're gonna pay
for those two sides with the thirdside. So as an example, if
you want it done really awesome andreally fast, okay, if you want

(32:35):
the quality and the time, thenyou're gonna pay for it in cost.
In other words, get ready towrite a big, big check to have
it done. Okay, if youwant it done fast and cheap, then
all you have to do is sacrificequality. Yeah, okay. Most people
fall for the third option, whichis, hey, I would like the

(32:58):
best possible value and the best possiblequality into my house. Well guess what
that means. That means you payfor that with taking your time. And
it's really that simple. See.And when I read that, I was
like, oh, I see whatyou mean by this. So the triangle
with cost, time and quality, pick two and you sacrifice the third.

(33:20):
That is the most brilliant thing.I like. I always get tips from
you, but you know, mybrain it's kind of mushy in there,
and some things don't stick. Thisone stuck. I was thinking about that
all last night. So Dean, thank you very much for that one.
You're very very welcome, all right, have welcome back home, by the
way, and chow, I'll seeyou next week, see you later.

(33:44):
That is Kay's house, whispered DeanSharp. Follow him on social media at
Home with Dean and of course listento him tomorrow morning six to eight and
Sunday's nine to noon right here onK five. So there's the yay,
let's go out on party side ofit, and then there's the you better
to have a play inside of it. From the Riverside County Sheriff's Department,

(34:06):
they're reminding everybody just off way I, guys, we're stepping up patrols to
catch people who drive drunk or druggedover Sinco de Mayo. And this is
just the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, but every law enforcement entity in southern California
is going to be stepping things up. Officials say people who plan on having

(34:27):
a couple of drinks should have adesignated driver or a call an uber or
a lift. A misdemeanor DUI convictionin California can result in finds up to
ten thousand dollars and also don't forgetthat includes some jail time and some improbation.
Intoxicated drivers are also looking at stateprison time if someone is killed.

(34:49):
Force is strong with the University ofCincinnati Cancer Center, a Yoda impressionist,
has marked the unofficial Star Wars HolidayMay the fourth, thanking the cancer center
in Ohio for its innovative treatment.Paul Ditchell says he learned he had neck
cancer in twenty twenty when he startednot being able to speak in his Yoda

(35:10):
voice. So he said, hewas told his vocal cords had to be
removed, but doctors were able tosave them by regrowing vocal cords. Check
this out using ear cartilage. Idon't even know that was a thing,
Ditchell told his medical team. Nowhe's cancer free and he can keep living
life and continue doing his Yoda impression. Jim Ryan, good morning to you.

(35:35):
So I can't decide if this issuper creepy or convenience, but when
it comes to the uber predictive technology, it is here. But I just
don't know if I want technology secondguessing me because I know how terribly arise
sometimes the autocorrect on like your phonecan go. And so then when I

(35:58):
was thinking about the two where Iwas kind of comparing them and I thought,
holy cow, this could go reallywrong, really fast. Well it
could, sure bet who's to saythat it might be super convenient for you
to step out your door in themorning you were going to call an uber.
You're gonna jump on the app andorder an uber anyway, But here's
this Uber sitting there in front ofthe house waiting for you. Guy opens
the window and says, s areyou Jennifer, And you say, yeah,

(36:21):
I'm generally well hop in, let'sgo. Because you've made that trip
so many times before, Uber isable to predict that you're probably going to
make that trip again. Or let'ssay every time the Rams play, you
order a pizza and you have itdelivered through Uber app, through Uber eats
brother, and so uber Eats figuresout and say, okay, it's the

(36:42):
game time, she's probably gonna ordera pizza. Let's go ahead and send
one out there. So it's thatkind of predictive technology, and it's not
something that isn't in use already.Jane. If you open your Netflix account,
you'll see the recommendations there that Netflixmakes based on your previous viewing.
This is kind of the same sortof technology over Its just trying to get
a jump on its competitors by filingfor the applant and the patent. Now,

(37:05):
all right, so if here's Iguess, here's the part that I
don't understand. What if I havea pattern, but all of a sudden,
I think to myself, you knowwhat, I don't need an Uber
and I walk outside and there's youknow, Sam, the Uber driver sitting
there with his window down, andI'm like, wait, what are you
doing here? What happens that?Couldn't the Uber driver then have sort of
a I don't know, a falseride or you know what I mean,

(37:28):
how does that person get paid ifI don't do the normal thing that the
algorithm says I do. You're right, and Uber is still working on that,
trying to figure out how to handlethose situations in which we break patterns
or we don't do the predicted thing, order the predicted food. You guys,
it's something that Uber would have tomake up to that driver maybe,
But I think the expectation is thatthis would so streamline things that would be

(37:52):
so efficient that the one off whenyou don't take that ride to work would
be worth all the other times thatyou do take the ride, and that
profits would overcome the losses that comefrom that one time that you didn't.
So, yeah, it's a it'sa there's a long way to go.
And by the way, this mightnever be deployed at all. Uber is
simply filing the patent application to holdit. You know they don't want anybody

(38:15):
else to get a hold of that, all right, and I do always.
I always appreciate it when it's kindof a hey, this is what
we're working on, you know whatI mean, And they're showing their math
and they're saying, hey, ifAPLSB doesn't equals see, then don't worry.
We're not going to use it.But you know, here's if it
does equal see, here are thethings that you can get out of it.
And those pitfalls that we were talkingabout, like the driver and you

(38:36):
know, breaking your pattern. Weknow how to fix all of those.
Is there any timeline or which it'sokay? Nothing, Well, there are
a bunch of geeks who sit aroundwatching patent applications and looking for interesting things
and then publishing them in newsletters likePatent Drop and Expedite. So yeah,
it wasn't Uber the release this.It was the geeks who work at these
different newsletters. All right, Jim, thank you so much. I don't

(38:59):
know that I'm ready for I thinkI like the okay, anything that can
streamline my life because I am thequeen of double booking forgetting, like I
mean literally I am, and I'mthe first person to admit it. So
I love the idea of a streamlinedlife, although I also know I like
to sleep in sometimes things change upand I don't want to. I guess

(39:19):
I would feel really bad if Imessed up an uber driver or a delivery
or whatever. Yeah, well leavethe driving to us. There you go,
Jim, have a great weekend.See you later. That is ABC's
Jim Ryan. Yeah. I guess. I guess I just worry about how
I would mess up somebody else's lifebased on the fact I know how squirrely

(39:44):
and scattered I am. Like oftentimeswhen Handle does something screwy, it makes
me feel better deep down inside becauseI'm like, nah, see it's somebody
else. Maybe it's this business thatyou have to have crazy people to work
in this business for you know, thirty years. This is what is this

(40:05):
what the evil genius of us allis. They're like, hey, they
are just crazy enough to work inradio sign them kind of think that might
be the case. There are somesnack smugglers from the US that have been
busted halfway around the world. Twocouples from the US have been stopped by
Israeli customs officials as they tried tosmuggle hundreds of pounds of fruit rollups into

(40:27):
the country. More than six hundredfifty pounds of the flattened fruit stuffed in
suitcases has been confiscated. It's tiedto TikTok videos that show ice cream filled
rollups, which has made rollups inIsrael very popular, creating a lot of
demand shortages and sky high prices ifyou can find them. Israel's Health Ministry
has suggested people consider ingredients and additivesand fruit rollups before they given to TikTok

(40:49):
temptation. Fruit rollups are kosher,Amy King KFI News. All right,
yesterday morning it was Chris Pratt galoreon the Morning Show. So you know,
I sit there in the studio andI've got TV's up, and what
I'll do is, I'll have onenational so like one cable network up,
and I'll have one local up usuallyand depending on what local station I have

(41:15):
on every now and then I realizedit's gone from news to Good Morning America.
So see its channel seven something likethat, and then I've got to
flip over. I'll go to achannel four or something like that. I'm
not gonna lie. When there wasChris Pratt on TV yesterday morning. I
might have left it on, buthe being the main you know, come

(41:37):
on, he's the main draw inGuardians of the Galaxy, right, Guardians
of the Galaxy Volume three. AndI went to some of the reviews last
night because Super Mario Brothers has kickedso much mushroom butt over the past few
weeks at the box office, Ithought, I just wonder how Guardians of
the Galaxy is going to shape up. See you later, super Mario Brothers.

(42:00):
Here's some of the reviews, andthis is people who posted them on
Google. There's something for everyone inthis action, heart and soul sci fi,
loaded with fantastic special effects, sentimental, sturdy relationships, and a solid
storyline with plenty of space to laughand cry. Somebody else wrote, after

(42:27):
six years of waiting, here comesthe last film of the GOOTG series.
I dare to say that this isthe most intriguing series Marvel has made,
and this one, goog Nope,GOOTG three alone is the best one after
the Endgame. All right. Sohonestly, as far as the reviews on

(42:50):
Google, and I think there's likesix hundred or something people that came to
look at this, and you know, post their reviews four and a half
out of five stars. That's prettygood. So I met a lot of
people are going to head to themovie theaters either tonight or this weekend.
That could be something there you gothat you do for your Sinco de Mayo

(43:10):
and then go to a place likeI pick in Pasadena, you know the
one, the swanky one where sometimesAmy King and I go when we have
our girls date night. And yes, it's gonna cost you. It's expensive.
I admit. This is why wedo it like once every six months,
because we work in radio, sowe have to save up. But
it's one of those where you cango and like you have a blanket and

(43:35):
pillow and you're in sort of apod and you have a table and it's
speakeasy style so you can get drinksand food delivered and it's fancy food and
fancy drinks. Go there, geta margharita and watch Guardians of the Galaxy
three. I'm just planning your weekendfor you. And hey, don't forget

(43:57):
California. I know this is anodd segue, but I want to make
sure that I get this in asthe last part of wake Up Call.
This morning, California has officially openedup a state hotline for people to report
hate crimes and hate incidents. Sublimanal Mirasuchi says this hotline is going to
make diverse communities safer. Unfortunately, most hate crimes and hate incidents are never

(44:21):
reported. Now this hotline is availablein two hundred different languages. Officials say
it will help the state better preventhate crimes by improving its database on hate.
Have a great weekend. Thank youfor listening to wake Up Call this
morning. Your weather forecast looks beautifulfor this weekend, so if you're watching
the Coronation, Granted it'll be wettonight so you won't see the sunshine and

(44:45):
warmer temperatures, but you can goparty and post celebrate tomorrow. Your socwweather
from KFI is partly cloudy today andstill pretty cool. We're going to be
right around sixty, but the weekendties are going to be up in the
seventies. We lead local live fromthe KFI twenty four hour newsroom. I'm
Jennifer Jones. Lee. This hasbeen your wake up call for a Friday.
