in nineteen sixty five, President LyndonB. Johnson signs Medicare, the health
insurance program for American sixty five andolder, into law. At the bill
signing ceremony, which took place atthe Truman Library and Independence, Missouri,
former President Harry Truman was enrolled asMedicare's first beneficiary and received the first Medicare

card. Johnson wanted to recognize Truman, who in nineteen forty five had become
the first president to propose national healthinsurance. This week, in nineteen seventy
five, James Haffa, one ofthe most influential American labor leaders of the
twentieth century, disappears in Detroit,Michigan, never to be heard from again.
It's believed that he was the victimof a mafia hit. Conclusive evidence

(00:44):
was never found, and Haffa's deathremained shrouded in mystery to this day.
This week, in nineteen ninety nine, The Blair Witch Project, a low
budget independent horror film that would becomea massive cult hit, is widely released
in US theaters. Shot with shakyhandheld cameras. The documentary style movie told
the story of three student filmmakers whodisappeared into the woods and were never heard

based viral marketing strategy, a relativelynew concept at the time. The Blair
Witch project generated huge buzz, andthis week in two thousand and three,
the last of twenty one million, five hundred twenty nine, four hundred and
sixty four Volkswagen Beetles built since WorldWar Two rolls off the production line at
Volkswagen's plant in Pueblo, Mexico. The car produced in Pueblo that day was

the last so called classic VW Beetle, which is not to be confused with
the redesigned New Beetle that Volkswagen introducedin nineteen ninety eight. And that's what
happened. Thanks for listening to ThisWeek in History on iHeartRadio.
