On Sports Fix with D'Arcy Waldegrave for Wednesday 16th April 2025, Former Warriors skipper Steve Price unpacks the skid against the Storm. What caused it, what happens now and how will the new look team fare against the Broncos this weekend? No Fish, no CNK, no Berry but a start for Leka Halasima. Pull the last performance apart, or just let it go?

D’Arcy celebrates the Super Rugby Aupiki final, convinced that the signs are there for the competition, indeed women’s rugby, to flourish. His Matatu got beaten by the Blues, but he loved the exchange all the same.

The Chamber is infested by D’Arcy and Newstalk ZB rugby editor Elliott Smith. They talk Mea Motu, Good Friday football and the new kid in Olympic town, mixed golf.

Thanks GJ Gardner Homes for getting involved, we love your work!

Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks dB. Follow
this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
It'd be welcome on into the Sports Fixed podcast. Thanks
for joining us. My name is Darcy Walter Grave and
this is it for Wednesday, the sixteenth of April twenty
twenty five. Of course, a big shout out to DJ
Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder. Coming up
on today's podcast, we'll have a look at the Warriors.

(00:41):
What happened against the Melbourne Storm, but what didn't happen
and how they turn things around with this rather adjusted team.
Steve Price joins us to talk about that. After that,
I've got some opinion on Super Rugby, Opicky. I love
that game on Saturday and I'm really looking forward to
the action of the Trans Tasman match tomorrow against the Warritas.

(01:03):
And joining us in the chamber is the rugby editor
for News TALKSZB, mister Elliott Smith, and will toss around
some concepts in sport today. That's our master plan, so
without further whatever it is, let's do it. In other news,
there are some short sports thoughts from the mounds that matter.

(01:25):
Former super bantam weight strap holder me A Mottu has
recovered from her first loss, this one against Allie's Scottney.
She got crooke as afterwards pneumonia and deep bean from bosis.
Good now and we'll return to the ring. Two weight
divisions up. She'll be fighting as a super father weight.
She's also got a plan for her health.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
I am going to see specialists ways of how to
manage it off.

Speaker 5 (01:53):
There is other.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Ways to help that can just give me some relief.
Punter Ponting, Australian great, former skipper of the Aussie cricket
team and lock in every year for the New Zealand
Golf Open, has coached his IPL team and extraordinary victory
set one hundred and twelve to win. The Night Riders
fluffed their lines and got cleaned out for ninety five.

(02:17):
The Punjab Kings successfully defended the lowest total in the
IPL's seventeen year history.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
So I've touched a lot of games in the IPL
and that might just be about the best win that
I've ever had. Twenty three days ago we couldn't defend
kind of in forty six and here we are. You
know depending on who it's world with sixteen runs up our.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Sleep can't believe it's been going for seventeen years. To
figure Lulu Soon is pretty impressed with the women's game
here in r Tierrolla. Without Aaron rautleft, the Billy Jean
King Cup team featuring three teenagers qualified for November's World Playoff.
They topped the pool in the Asia Oceania Group one stage.

Speaker 6 (02:57):
Doing this without her, it's not what we want, but
we're going to do our best and that's what we did.
And thinking about she's going to play in the team,
that definitely gives even more comfort.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Boxing to cricket, to tennis and there are some short
sport thoughts for the day.

Speaker 7 (03:16):
U Scadopy. It's Sports Vex with Dancy Waldegrave.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
I don't know about you, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself
watching the OPICKI final between my Mata III and of
course the Blues who are fighting to make it too.
On the bounce five past seven. It was a Saturday night.
It was at Eden Park and no, the crowd wasn't.
The crowd wasn't what I'm sure most people would have hoped.

(03:45):
But the eyeballs on the TV. Well, if you believe
what has read, there are hundreds of thousands of people
who watched that game. And what a game of rugby
union it was. It had everything. And you know, I'm
a Candabury fan, so when the Marta II got rolled,
I was a little downcast. But the heart and the
soul and the attitude of the Blues team was something

(04:09):
to be admired. Standout performers, well, you can't go past
Porsche Woodman Wickliffe. That lady is a phenom. She is
a women's rugby goat. Seeing what she does with the
Blues gives me hope that maybe, just maybe, after being
turned away by the wnurl will make herself available for

(04:32):
the upcoming World Cup because she is box office and
she will give the Black Ferns a great chance of
defending their title. It's a slow mover, but slowly and
surely women's rugby in this country will get bigger. It
will be more well attended, it will have more games,

(04:54):
it will be more cherished. I certainly hope that happens
sooner rather than later, but I'm not holding my breath.
These things take time. All I know is that when
Super Rugby Opicky is on. I'm guaranteed a great game
of rugby union and as a football fan, that is
all I'm after. Let's get amongst the warretas tomorrow, ladies,

(05:18):
because that is the game that determines trans Tasmin female supremacy.
Get amongst blues.

Speaker 6 (05:25):
Leading a X.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
We've got just the ticket. It's Sports Vex.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
News Talks IVY and it's a huge welcome to the
Sports Fixed podcaster. I'll mate former Warriors at skipper Steve Price. Gooday, Steven,
I'm very well. Interesting turnaround for the Warriors last weekend.
The Melbourne Storm have done it again. And I've said

(05:50):
that the thing with the NRL is that from time
to time there's going to be a lopsided whipping. It
happens in this competition, but it's always the Storm. What
are your thoughts around that because back in your day
that wasn't the case, was it. No, it wasn't.

Speaker 5 (06:05):
And that's sort of a bogey team I suppose for
the Warriors at the moment, and in particularly in Melbourne,
they've got a fair confidence when they come up against
the Warriors because they've had some really good wins there.
And yeah, as you were saying, when I was playing,
like the weather's very similar. You've got a lot of
Warriors fans in Melbourne, so it sort of felt like
a home game. So we always really enjoyed playing in Melbourne,

(06:28):
and obviously against a very good footy team, and no
better way to play against the best to challenge yourself.
And we come up with a lot more wins and
losses there, that's for sure, And yeah it's a challenge
for the team at the moment. But yeah, that game's
in the rearview mirror. Now. Hopefully they can learn from
that and then sort of move forward in a way
that's to best prepare them for other situations. First and

(06:48):
foremost is the Broncos this weekend.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Yeah, we'll look forward to that. Sure, we're still going back,
I'm sorry, poo, back to the storm. Do they overthink it?
Do they think too much about that? That's smudge over
top of them with this team, because this is a
team that went into that game three on the bounce.
A couple of those people didn't think they would win.
They had essentially a very I'm missing a couple of
key players, but everything was there for them to do well.

(07:14):
Overthinking it, putting too much into it because that first
half that's got blown off the park.

Speaker 5 (07:19):
So I reckon, there's your first mistake is that it's
not necessarily what the Warriors are thinking and what the
Warriors want to do.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Sometimes it's what the opposition are allow you to do.

Speaker 5 (07:28):
And one of the great things that Craig Dullamy's very
good at is being able to look at his opposition
and be able to identify their strengths and then he
tries to really limit the opportunities or the impact on
the game that those strengths have, and then obviously really
push the strengths that you know, the Storm have. And
whenever they did really well against us when I was playing,

(07:51):
and I've seen it in the last few years as well.
As they start very well and when they get to
a good start, they're very good leaders, and once they
get to a lead, then it's really hard to sort
of chase them down. So yeah, the start was obviously
really important. As soon as they do that and they
get into you know, the boys head a bit. It's
been a while since the Warriors of one in Melbourne,

(08:11):
so then you know whether that starts to come more
to the front of the front of mind, that you've
probably talked about that during the week of let's you know,
let's change this, let's change this sort of rotation that
we've got at the moment and try and turn that
around so that we get a win in Melbourne against
the Storm. But yeah, sometimes that can work against you

(08:31):
when you're you're under fire, things aren't going your way,
you have a few injuries or like with Fish coming
off early, not ideal, and you know a few other
things go away, sorry, go against you. Not ideal when
you're in a situation like a team the Storm are
playing really well at the moment, pretty strong side they've got,
and particularly at home, they're pretty hard to beat. So

(08:52):
you put all those together and you don't always look
at yourselves and say, well, you know, it's all of
our fault. And there's other contributing factors, factors when you're
playing a team sport, and sometimes you opposition's got a
bit to play in how you play.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
No choice but to change the line. Now, suspension to
Rocko Berry, which is the real shame, but so it is.
There's the laws and then of course injuries to a
couple of the key players. So there's been a number
of changes and twisted position in the lineup. First up
your thoughts on not having Fish, But it looks like
a peck injury is not as bad as we think it.

(09:29):
As you means to me, I fear that James Fitzherhari
is not being around Penrith. It's probably been a big
reason they've collapsed as well, So he's a key part
to not be there.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Steve.

Speaker 5 (09:40):
Yeah, and that's one of the big things I thought,
Whereas did well with obviously Bondfish bringing him over and
the money that he's got and the way that he
goes about his work and the impact he can have
one of those young forwards that are coming through the
club as well as the rest of his teammates. And
I think, you know, other than probably Game one where
it wasn't just Fish, the whole team sort of struggled

(10:01):
over in Vegas, I think, you know, they've really found
sort of a little bit more of their groove and
how it's going to work. Yeah, the weekend was disappointing
but didn't go the Warrior's way, and that happens two
at times. Now it's going to be who's going to
stand up, you know, who's going to take over that role?
For how have a long fish is out for he'll
still play a role at training and in the preparation

(10:22):
of the game. But as you say, fingers crossed, the
injury isn't as bad as what first thought, and he's
back sooner than later. But that's the other great thing
made about the NRL and about regular league about sport
is you know, one disappointment for one person gives another
person opportunity. And there's a highly young fellows there at
the Warriors that are looking for an opportunity and a
few of them are getting that this weekend. So now

(10:44):
it's their opportunity to front up and against the Broncos
team that you know, I have have had some really
good games this year and then a below the Warriors
had some disappointing games this year. So huge game for
both clubs. But yeah, there's a bit of unknown there
for the Warriors, which will be a bit worrying, I
reckon for the Bronx coming over and not really knowing
what they are facing up against. So yeah, they probably

(11:04):
can't come into it the way they might have wanted
to knowing you know, there's no chance, no Roger, no,
no huge sort of some of those regular faces. Aren't
there that they normally be used to playing against?

Speaker 2 (11:15):
The chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
Let's climbing a chamber and why wouldn't we when Elliott
Smith is in here with us? Elliott Smith is the
Rugby editor for News Talks. Thereb full time comments man
as well, in fact, possibly the hardest working man in
this building. You never stopped? Do you may ever stop? Good?
What would you do if you did stop?

Speaker 8 (11:36):
I actually don't know and I don't want to find out.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
No fair enough as well. Let's let's look at some
of the big sports stories of the day. Me and
Motto is on the bounce back. She's coming back. She's
going up a couple of weight divisions after being beaten
by Ellie Scottney and well beaten. Then she gets crooked
as a dog. Now we're hearing from more again. This
is going to be an interesting comeback because she was

(12:00):
she was owned, wasn't she against Elie?

Speaker 8 (12:02):
She was was very unfortunate because heading into that fight
I thought it could have been a MEA mottwo v sure,
but ultimately she was out classed completely on that night,
and it sounds like she's taken a step backwards and gone,
how do I reset my career? What is the way
forward for me after this? And we've had other boxes,
of course do this and change weight classes before or

(12:24):
try to reset their career, as Joseph Parker springs to mind,
but to go up a couple of weight classes and
go this is the way forward for me and my career.
We know that she's a great hitter, we know she's
a great boxer. It didn't work out that night, and
she's decided to pivot, as many people do in any
walk of life, and this is the way that me
and Mottu has decided to go forward.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
So apparently the theory around this is that cutting weight
was just too hard for her, and after that trip
to the other side of the world, which we've all
done quite a few times, it can destroy you. But
she gets that on the way back, deep moms from
deep vein thrombosis pneumonia as well, so her health got kicked.
I don't know how much you can put that loss

(13:04):
down to health is issues, but the fact that she's
looked at it and gone, hey, this doesn't work. I
need to do something else that shows a good attitude.

Speaker 8 (13:13):
I think It's got to be part of it, doesn't it.
And as you say, the health thing of having to
cut is not sustainable really when you've got to keep
doing it before any fight and then turn up physically
and perform. And she is a performer. And I know
boxes and combat fighters are used to cutting and used
to doing that, but at some point it takes a
toll depending on how much you're cutting. And I think

(13:34):
credit to her and a coach and trainer that they've gone,
what is the best way to relaunch yourself?

Speaker 2 (13:40):
What is the best way?

Speaker 3 (13:41):
Can you just become a bad night?

Speaker 8 (13:44):
And I think ultimately takes a lot of courage to
do that because it would have been easy to truck
long and go, that was one bad night. We'll go
back to what we know and keep doing it that way.
But she's looked at the bigger picture and gone, this
is the way that I'm going to be a better
boxer and get myself you know, those title fights that
she's after, I think credit to her.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
So what's Mikaylovitch and Pombo I'm going to do next?
Because they're both in the same possession and we're this
thing where we're right up in the lights and suddenly
they're all gone except Joe Parker.

Speaker 5 (14:12):
That's right.

Speaker 8 (14:13):
I mean that's the question, isn't it, And whether they
follow suit or whether they look at her for inspiration
and then boys, she is an inspiration.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
Now she is right. Let's move on to Super Rugby
over the weekend. It's not so good Friday. If you're
a Blue or a Crusader, you can't be eating the
eggs and the likes because you've got to go out
and fight. Always a lot on red and back and
blue and white. We know this yet I know it's
Crusaders and Blues. It's not Auckland canvery. You may get
the general idea. The Crusaders would be feeling pretty good

(14:42):
about themselves after digging themselves out of a horrible hole
in the last ten minutes last week. The Blues managed
to back down the threat of Moana Passifiker, who's in
the right form to take this well.

Speaker 8 (14:55):
I think the Crusaders have to go on his favorites
the top of the table. They're not infallible though, as
we have seen last week against the Hurricanes and Mowana
Pacifica before the end as well, where they were utterly
terrible for eighty minutes and Mourana were very very good.
So while there's at the table, I don't know that
that means much and we go on and say our
table positions don't mean much, but I genuinely think in
this year in super rugby it doesn't mean a hell

(15:16):
of a lot. There's still so much rugby to be played,
and the Blues seem to have found their form a
couple of wins on the bounce now and this is
a real acid test of how much they have in proud.

Speaker 3 (15:25):
Have they gone back to the what makes them great?
The DNA? Have they gone back to last year?

Speaker 8 (15:30):
They have gone back and gone We're going to play
utterly narrow, We're going to keep it in tight. We're
going to go direct up the park. And it's worked
for them against more Wata Pacifica and against the Hurricanes
the week before and now the Crusaders. They go down
there at ground that whatever their form, has not been
a happy hunting ground over the last twenty years. They've
picked up one win I think since two thousand and
four there, so it's a tough ground for them to

(15:51):
go at the best of times, but they've got themselves
a little bit of confidence, and they also want to
atone for that really poor performance that they put out
against the Crusaders at Eden Park about three or four
weeks ago where they got beaten in forty two nineteen
I think it was, and were utterly terrible for most
of the game. So there's a bit of a time
that they need to put out there on the weekend.
They've gone with a six to two split, so that's

(16:12):
a little bit different from Verncotta and I reckon they're
going to roll back to clock too not so long
ago twenty twenty four and put out that performance again
of the way that they want to play Crusaders in
any way, they know how to play a bit better
this year than they were last year as well. So
really fascinating meeting on Good Friday and.

Speaker 3 (16:29):
Other key games over the weekend I think you're looking
forward to.

Speaker 8 (16:31):
In particular, I'm looking forard to seeing Ruben Love played
ten for the Hurricanes against the Force on Saturday nights
due I think it is first time in three years
he started at ten for the Hurricanes. Riley hoor Heep
has been there, hasn't done the greatest of jobs. Auth
Audio receipted right Riley, but he is the third choice
in there as well. I'm looking forward to it to
see how Ruben Love has grown as a player in

(16:52):
the last three years now in All Black what's he
bringing to the table in this game and also has
wider implications for the All Blacks If he can play ten,
it gives him more versatility when it comes to All
Blacks selection, which is not too far down the track.
Chiefs and Holland is as well. The Chiefs have just
sort of dropped off the bottom the top of the
table with that loss to the Waratas last week. Can
they bounce back against the Harlander is at home on

(17:14):
Saturday night? So really another fascinating weekend is Super Rugia weightstar.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
Carries on fascinating, It's been extraordinary. I talk more about
the Women's Essential final tomorrow, but we're rapidly running out
of time. I might touch pineapp on that one tomorrow afternoon.
But one last thing of the golf there's a new
Game of Golf thing pilot.

Speaker 8 (17:33):
Yeah, mixed team events, thirty six hole affair and it's
going to add to the men's and women's individual ones.
I think they should have had this on the start,
but I think it's great. They're going to put it
in La Riviera, one of the best golf courses in
the world. It's iconic and you think about the combinations
you could potentially have and when we're three years away
still but you could have Ryan Fox playing alongside Lydia Co.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
Stick around for that.

Speaker 8 (17:56):
Well absolutely, you know this is another chance and you
know it. She's got it. She's got the set bronze, silver, gold.
Now there's an extra part of that set. Does she
want that? Scottie Scheffler could play with Nellie Carter, It
hold Tommy Flickword, all sorts of combinations as we stand,
you know three years out that there's gonna be a
bit of water to go under the bridge and rankings
and various things. But how good would that be? And

(18:18):
I think ultimately it brings that Olympic team element to
the four. You are representing your country, you're playing alongside.
I think that's a really good idea.

Speaker 3 (18:26):
All it's great to have you in the chamber. Elliott Smith,
don't ever stop working. It'll be terrible for all of us.

Speaker 7 (18:31):
Oh, dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sportsfix with Darcy Waltergrave.
