Welcome to Sportsfix, your daily dose of sport.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hello there, and welcome into the sports Fix podcast. We
hope this is one of the brighter parts of your day.
We like to drop into your podcast feed, get around
about this time Monday through Friday and talk some sport.
And when I say we, actually before I bring in
my able companion, we're here with GJ. Gardner Holmes, New
Zealand's most trusted home builder. When I say we, I
mean me, Jason Pine and my good friend mister Darcy Waldergray.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
That sounds flash, doesn't it.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Hello, It's good to see you. It's good to see you.
Here a weekend approaching with not quite as much sport
as there has been in the past, and you know
that's caused you and I to get a bit creative
with the sorts of things we bring to the radio
across the weekend. And here on the Sportsbox podcast. Who
are we chatting to today?
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Each Sody Oh mother tell the man well, of course,
says he's not got a contract. He missed out on
the Central contract only just but he's been selected by
Rob Walter for the T twenty trice series, so where
there's a spark of like his hope for him and
he's only relatively young, what thirty one, thirty two, so
(01:26):
there's a lot for him to play for. So this
is great news for each because your reaction one of
the nicest guys in New Zealand Cricket.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Looking forward to hearing from each soldy on the podcast.
I've got some news of a club rugby rivalry on
the field in Wellington and some thoughts about that, and
we'll get into the chamber and kick around a few
things as well. So without a further add let's get
into it. In other news, let's get underway with some
of the big sports stories around today. SALGP Chief Executive
(01:53):
Sir Russell Coots has revealed they offered a multi year
agreement to Walkland to appear on the regatta calendar. Instead,
a one year deal for February fourteen and fifteen has
been accepted.
Speaker 4 (02:04):
We've certainly got other venues that eager to have a
Soldi event. We ultimately want to achieve stability, but as
we grow we were able to do that gradually. That's
absolutely fine with us.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Bevan Jacobs is the only young Cap player in the
black Caps cricket squad for next month's T twenty tri
Series with South Africa and hosts Zimbabwe. The twenty three
year old was called up to face Sri Lanka over
the New Year period but didn't get on the field.
It's always a good feeling first or second time. I'm
just really excited to be with the group again, and
you know, first time tuttling away with the group overseas
(02:37):
and a triumphant moment for Penrith coach Ivan Cleary after
his side continued their NRL League season and revival with
an eight to six win over competition leaders the Cannery
Bulldogs like a semi final, you know, the dogs to
they credit have been the best thing all year and
five days after Auckland as well.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Use Scandavinion. It's Sports Fix with Jason Hine and Dussy
water Grave.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
We're joined now on the Sports Fix podcast by each Sody.
He's been picked to travel over to Africa to playing
the T twenty tri Series. Of course he hasn't got
a contract at the moment outside of the contracted list,
but he's playing anyway, so how does that work? You
get a ish, Where do you sit in the widest
(03:22):
scheme of things.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
Yeah, no, it's you know, it's a big changing landscape
at the moment. And obviously missing out on the contract
list this year by quite a narrow margin I think
was pretty pretty tough to take. But I guess, you know,
the cool thing is there's still an avenue and opportunity
for me to play some Tea twenty creit for New
Zealand and obviously with Rob Woldter coming in fresh set
of eyes, something new, hopefully it's something that can set
(03:44):
me off and I can play a bit more consistently
this year and you know.
Speaker 6 (03:47):
Eventually get that contract back.
Speaker 5 (03:48):
But at the moment, I think it's just about taking
every opportunity I can. It's nice to be able to.
Speaker 6 (03:52):
Be named in the first side that Rob's named.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
That's it. It shows some faith in what you're doing.
And as we know, look South African, but he spent
a lot of time over here coaching through Central and
Otago and New Zealand day so he knows what people
can do. Yet.
Speaker 6 (04:07):
Yeah, totally, you know, Rob Perrob spent a lot of
time in New Zealand. I think the first time I
met him, he was coaching. Might have been Otarget first
and then went to CD and I could have that wrong.
But you know, he's.
Speaker 5 (04:17):
Played against some of his teams a lot, always got
on really well with them off the park.
Speaker 6 (04:22):
All my interactions have been positive. So I've only dealt
with him once.
Speaker 5 (04:25):
In a coaching capacity in the camp, you know, a
week or so ago. But he was he was very
encouraging of where I was at, and you know.
Speaker 6 (04:33):
It keeps on encouraging me to keep developing my skills.
Speaker 5 (04:36):
So you know, I could still be an asset to
the New Zealand side for some time to come.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
You've still got the passion that is the key thing.
So as far as skills are concerned, as I hate
saying this, but as as bowlers in the spin department
get older and more mature, they become better. Is that
your trajectory? Do you think?
Speaker 6 (04:54):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (04:54):
You know, I think like I often think. You know,
I'm thirty two years old. You often think when a
creeter is getting old.
Speaker 6 (05:02):
You know he sort of look at that thirty six
or thirty eight sort of mark.
Speaker 5 (05:05):
But you know, at the moment, I think, with the
way the game's gone, and how since he's played a
big part, you know.
Speaker 6 (05:09):
Thirty two still feels really young.
Speaker 5 (05:11):
And like, I know, if Warnie was still here and
I was like talking to him about being old, like, Matt,
you're in your prime. You he's lying, you know, Like
so I sort of have that voice in my head
to you know, continue to keep looking to improve. And
you know, I've played one sort of role for New
Zealand and ten twenties for a long time, and that's
been after the power Play and through the middle.
Speaker 6 (05:29):
But I think, you know, at the moment, I'd love to.
Speaker 5 (05:31):
Be able to provide a little bit more support for
you know, us spin bowlers like Mitch and Braces and
that and that power play as well. So I'm definitely
going to have to figure out some new ways to
be able to do that.
Speaker 6 (05:43):
But that's certainly keeping me younger. And like you say,
the passions there and I'm hungry is ever.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Well, it wasn't like, you know, super mature saying more mature.
You're you're advancing, You're growing into your role. Please don't
take this as a slap in the face.
Speaker 6 (05:54):
Mate, I like a bit of pay mate.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Okay, fine, you said you're going to be helping out
the bunch. So you've got the Santa Claus Mitchell Sander
who's the skipper, and then as you mentioned, there's there's
quite a few tweakers around. So as far as what
role you think you're going to play and how prominent
you're going to be, is that just at the time
what Rob's seeing where you think you are sitting. There's
(06:20):
no guarantees, right.
Speaker 6 (06:21):
No, exactly right, man, there's no guarantees ever.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
And you know, it's international sports a fickle thing, and
you know, like you say, every opportunity you get is
a really positive one. But I suppose for me and
my own growth is you know, I've had twelve great,
great years playing you know, lots of credit from New Zealand,
playing lots of created in northern districts in Canterbury. I've
had a chance to go all over the world and
playing some different leagues.
Speaker 6 (06:43):
So it's been awesome.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
But you know, I've only ever done one role and
that's been effectively from that seventh over onwards. So you
know I could carry on doing that and like you say,
you know, or like I've sort of said, I've had
a good, good chance and a good chunk of my
life doing that. But look, I'd love to be able
to challenge myself and say, oh, why can't you bowling
over in the power play? But you know, if you
are going to do that, you might have to do
(07:04):
it slightly differently to how you bowl in the middle.
So working those things out, you know, that sort of
problem solving is something I find really exciting at.
Speaker 6 (07:11):
The moment, and I've implemented into my training.
Speaker 5 (07:14):
And then it's just trying to marry up with you know,
what Rob sees in terms of the team going forward
and how I can fit into that.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Twelve years it's been that long. No wonder I thought
you were old.
Speaker 6 (07:25):
Mate, I'm telling you, I'm serious.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
Everyone everyone thinks I'm thirty seven, and you know, Chryst almighty,
I've got all these grades coming through at the moment.
Speaker 6 (07:34):
I'm like, I'm thirty two. Man, I'm still supposed to
be in my prime and stuff is moving forward but
far out.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah, you are in your prime.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
It me knowing you're thirty two years old, You've got
so much more to offer. What happens over in Africa,
as far as conditions are concerned, likely to be suitable
for what you do.
Speaker 5 (07:53):
I mean, I've had two tourists him Babwe before and
I found the wickets were really dry. But it's not
like an Asian sort of dry where they sort of
grip and turn a lot. It's kind of more if
I was to compare it to anywhere, it'd be like
u A, you know, almost like sort of desert style,
kind of low, little bit skiddy you know wickets.
Speaker 6 (08:13):
So yeah, hopefully by.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
The time the trial series sort of keeps eventuating and
the wickets start to wear, hopefully there's a bit of
assistance there in terms of sideways movement. But you know,
hopefully it's something to use in terms of the low
bounce because lays, you know, in New Zealand is like
not really too much on office, so when you do
get some dry conditions, it's often often a nice place
to be able to showcase your skills sports perfects.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Every part of New Zealand has its fierce sporting rivalries
and one of the biggest in Wellington club rugby is
p Toni against hud Ole Boys Marris, the near neighbors
up against each other. They play each year for the
very famous mc bain Shield. Now this dates back to
nineteen thirty four when it was first contested and the
Hut Club won at six'. Five it's been contested every year,
(09:00):
since so tomorrow is the ninetieth mc Bain shield. Meeting
NOW pertoni have been pretty much dominant over these eighty
nine previous, contests sixty four, Wins Huddleboys mariat have. Twenty
there have been five, draws but there's always plenty of
feeling between these. Two the official match report from the
two thousand and nine game says in the twentieth minute
(09:23):
the game came to a stop with a brawl that
saw players from both sides fighting like. Idiots there have
been some incredible. Finishes back in twenty twenty, two it
was twenty all with time almost up and a charge
down by the batony number eight on an attempt at
hold Huddle Boys marius drop goal saw the ball spit.
Free Sam, blackburn an imported winger From england who hadn't
(09:46):
touched the ball in the entire, match chased after, it
totaled ahead and scored a very famous try to clinch
the McBain shield For. Potoni there was a long PERIOD
ptoni had it for thirty years between nineteen fifty three
and nineteen eighty, four before a four to three win
For hut in nineteen eighty. Five so tomorrow said to
be another. Belter the Ninetieth McBain shield Meeting Club rugby
(10:10):
And wellington is reaching the end of its regular, season
and both of these sides are well and truly in
the mix for the knockout. Rounds BUT i reckon if
you asked, members players coaches from these clubs to choose
between The Big Jubilee cup silverware the championship at the
end of the, season or having the McBain shield locked
away for the, SUMMER i reckon quite a few of
(10:32):
them would choose The. McBain just one of the many
stories of club rugby rivalry and folklore up and down
this rugby mad country of.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Ours we are now in session On.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
Sportsfix fantastic to hear from.
Speaker 6 (10:47):
Me.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Sody lets you AND i jump into the chamber dars
and kick around a few. Things The. Warriors i've almost
forgotten about The. WARRIORS i don't know, why sort of you,
know the weekends arrived and we know that they're playing
The broncos. Tomorrow every time they've lost the, season they've
bounced back and. Won are you expecting the same tomorrow In?
Brisbane What i'm hoping not. Expecting but you look at
that Brizil been. Side now this is A brisbane side
(11:10):
that can turn it. Out what was it early in
the piece they rolled The bulldogs whore almost, unbeatable and
they fronted and they destroyed. Them so let's be very
wary of A brisbane team at. Home AND i don't
want to mention all.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
Of the, superstars but when you look at that back
line that is, immense the guys they've got, there and
then of course you've got the monster Pain hears up the.
Gut so this is going to be a very very stern.
Test AND i can't say they're going to. Win i'm
not going to do.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
That.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
NO i, actually as you've been saying, That i've been
looking at this team and you're so, Right Reyes walsh
and the One Jersey Adam, reynolds one of the best going,
around and the half back jumper and yeah just in
paint hars as you, say one of the toughest roughest
front rowers going. Around and THEN i think to, himself
you know, WHAT i need to have more faith than The.
WARRIORS i need to have more faith in this team
(12:02):
that every, time AS i, say they've lost this, season
have bounced back with a. Win they've shot and bounced back.
Ability they're not. FAVORITE i wouldn't have, imagined especially not
given what you've said about The brisbane. Team BUT i
reckon they can go. There and when he said very, cautiously.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Well they got a punch in the, face didn't. They
they've got a blood nose last week and that was.
Embarrassing we look at the second string team that they
played against In, penriuth with their development, systems and we've
seen this With clary right the way through the Next
cabs off the. Rank they're not. Rubbish they are good
players and there's a bit of. Underestimation but that game,
itself there are a couple of key moments in that,
(12:40):
game intercept, Tries dla Mat zeleshniak getting hap. Dropped that
really gave them amentum To. Penruth so not too much
to freak out, about and yes they can turn, it
but be very. Aware and you know the thing About,
brisbane so On cobbos not even in the.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Teammate, YEAH i know they're a powerful, outfit all, right
we'll look forward to watching that, GAME i think tomorrow
at around five. O'clock let's turn our attention to the
latest stop on The formula one, Calendar land In austria
for The Austrian Grand. PRIX i seem to ask you
this every time there's A Grand, prix DASS i must
ask it? Again what should we expect From Liam? Lawson
(13:16):
and this?
Speaker 3 (13:17):
One?
Speaker 6 (13:17):
Well?
Speaker 5 (13:18):
Better?
Speaker 3 (13:18):
Luck is it? Possible it just doesn't get any. Better
BUT i think that he's really falling into a rhythm
with this new car With Isaac, hadger who is he's
out driving him at the, moment but he's in a comfortable,
space which is. Good he has experience at this. Track
he knows how this track. Operates it's essentially a Home Grand.
Prix it's a great. WATCH i really enjoy it that it's.
(13:41):
Beautiful it's, Pretty. Jason if you're into esthetics of, THINGS
I formula one tracks that run through city, Streets formula
one tracks that there are so many that there's just
nothing to. Them this one has got hill and green
grass and it's just lovely to look at so all over.
That the main thing we hope For liam is he
(14:02):
just got to qualify. High it's the best way to
keep out of. Trouble but nothing, ventured nothing. Gained carry,
On i'd like to think with the aggression that he
showed so, far.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Hope so first two practice sessions overnight, tonight starting just before, midnight,
actually so no sleep for, you dark by the sounds
of things as you take in, practice and then qualifying
tomorrow night as. WELL i worry about your sleep patterns
when it comes To formula, one you, KNOW i really.
Do BUT i know you can get through. Okay and
then of course the race itself presumably will Be monday.
Morning now we'll keep our eyes on that as. Well,
(14:35):
hey just before we leave the, chamber there's A british
And Irish lions tour which is about to. START i
know we had The argentina game last weekend and that
was a punch in the face for The, lions but
they take on The Western. Force good old. TOURING a
who doesn't love a? TOUR i love a. TOUR i
don't THINK i will engage and there's a reason. Why
CAN i justify? WHY i don't Think i'll be watching? That,
(14:56):
yes please, Please.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
I'm flying To london On, monday and So i've got
no work for three, weeks SO i kind of feel
If i've got half an opportunity not to watch something
BECAUSE i FEEL i have.
Speaker 2 (15:07):

Speaker 3 (15:07):
Won't, HOWEVER i will watch The worries Because i'm addicted
to the. MEN i will Watch Formula one Because i'm
addicted to. It So i'm. Sorry i'll got to step
away from this so WHEN i get, Back i'll see
what's going. On i'm sure that the press In england
will be covering, it so i'll Be i'll be up to.
Speaker 2 (15:21):

it's been pushed down the pecking, order and with your impending,
break WHICH i actually hadn't signed, off CAN i, say
on behalf of The Sports fixed? TEAM i know you
