Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is a special in the field report with you
season going on all over the country. These are my
two boys and the next door neighbor. You're going to
want to hear this on Gun Talk Hunt. I'm kJ.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
You found the right place. We go all over this
little blue.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Orb sharing stories and tactics about chasing wild gang.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Now let's get on the honey.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
That's a field report.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Welcome in all you Gun Talk hunters.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
I'm your host, kJ, and today is a special one
because it's the neighborhood kids. I take them to youth
season up in Oklahoma. Let's see how this plays out.
It ought to be a good episode. But this episode
is brought to you by Hodgden Powders, Range Ready Studios, Remington,
MO and Ruger Firearms.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Now you will notice something about this episode.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
If a GSP named Jakomo shows up, don't worry about it.
This is an in the field report. We're not in
the field because we had to drive all night to
get back here. Luckily we got it covered. But this
is an in the field report on this episode. I'm
gonna talk hont all right, Jaed, Welcome in, and this
is a this is out in our backyard you tell we're.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Not out in the field report, But this is right after, Man,
your last U season. What do you think I've had better?
You've had better? What do you mean? Come on?

Speaker 3 (01:26):
I mean I got some on other youth seasons, you know,
but it was I wouldn't say it was the worst
worst youth season.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
I mean, but what does it mean for you to
be your last YOU season? Because now you're transitioning into
one a more expensive tag because you season tags are
always less expensive on me. But what does it mean
for you to be this this is your last YOU season?

Speaker 3 (01:53):
I mean, I guess that's a point of transition. You know,
I'm I'm not just a little kid going with his
dad hunting. I'm like actually starting to like going as
a guy that wants to.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Hunting.

Speaker 4 (02:09):
You know.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Yeah, I mean it's it's kind of surreal for me
because you're my oldest and it's it's surreal for me
to be on this end of it seeing you grow
up and being like, man, you were like I think
you were five years old when you first went out
with me and it was a Turkey hunt, and you
know it was it was great. I remember that.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Yeah, you do holy craft. I can't remember, Like, I
can't believe you remember that. But you know, to see
you grow into the hunter that you are now is
really cool. And you're you know, you've got your own
gun and you're kind of your own outfit and.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Like just just everything. You're doing stuff on your own,
which is encouraging for me. How is it to hunt
on your own?

Speaker 3 (02:49):
I really like hunting on my own. I mean, of course,
hunting with you and Knock sometimes is fun, but like
I like being out there on my own just kind
of like just it kind of clears things up for me.
It's like a very therapeutic experience, you now, Like it's
just nice being out there in nature. And then you know,

(03:10):
actually getting something on your own is fun too. I
really like that too.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Yeah. So this year's season a big one, your last one.
We're successful. We're going to be We're going to be
successful in this all we want to be didn't work
out that way spoiler alert. So I go down early season.
We get the feeders up running for you guys, and
the reason I do that, and you'll transition out of it.

(03:35):
You'll transition from hunting on feeders to now you're not
because you really I want you to get used to
like seeing deer and getting being the opportunity for success
is a little bit more likely for you. You know, and
you're set up, they're they're feeding, they're in a relaxed state.

(03:56):
But you're going to transition out of hunting out of feeders.
I think one one day you're gonna go, you know what,
let's not hunt, let's let's hunt them in their element.
But this one you were laying on the ground. So
we drove basically all night. We got there at about
twelve thirty in the morning, set up camp. So we
got to bed around one fifteen or so in the morning,

(04:18):
woke up at about five o'clock in the morning, got around.
I went out and dropped you off real early because
I had other people to drop off, and then I
was playing guide. I was kind of shifting people around.
But well, Joe walk us through when I dropped you off,
got you set up, and you're sitting there in the

(04:38):
dark all by yourself. What's going through your mind?

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Well, I slept. I took a small nap for twenty minutes.
I found out through the drill on my on my blanket. YEP,
that's why I found out I Oh, I was. I
fell asleep, but then it started raining, and then I
started to get really cold, and then I started to
like not have fun during that, Like it's not very

(05:04):
I would I didn't. I wouldn't say I enjoy it
just in there in the cold very much.

Speaker 5 (05:08):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
And to be fair, like it wasn't necessarily cold because
when I left camp and I didn't think it was
gonna rain because I didn't look at the radar before
we went out, or I would have been like, hey,
you need to pack extra stuff. Oh hey, by the way,
you may want to take the rain jacket because it
was back at camp. But I should have, like, I
guess I should have checked that. But but like you

(05:31):
haven't had a lot of like foul weather hunts. You've
had cold hunts, but not a lot in the rain. Yep, no,
not in the rain. This is my first didn't like it.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
If I were better prepared and the mentally new, oh
yeah it's gonna rain, I'll just but you know, And
I was just kind of sitting there with a blanket
over me, and then like if you I think it
was like an I think it was like an hour.
We're in Yeah, And then I had the blanket over

(06:05):
me and I.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
And you're just laying on the ground. There's no bron
prone like I mean, yes, raw like I like that.
It's raw to the elements. Uh huh.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
And I lift I every once in a while, I'll
like check under it and like and see if there
is anything out there. And this time there's a troop
of bucks out there.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
So a bachelor group.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
Yeah, Bucks, Yeah, And I was like, well, I might
also make my shot on these, yeah, because you know,
I don't want to, like, well, there are some bucks.
I don't think I'll get them.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
But I do have to say no spoiler alert here,
but it's a sign of things to come that within
that there was a good one in there because I
think it was the exact same group of bachelor bucks.
And and one of the hunter coming up on the
podcast had a shot at one of them. I'm not

(07:04):
gonna give any more away. You're gonna have tune in later. Yeah,
all right, so all right, bad elements. A bachelor group
shows up, they're mingling around the feeder. What do you
do next?

Speaker 3 (07:15):
Well, obviously I got on my six or five creed more.
I so a bit of context beforehand, which I didn't
mention I ranged it. But mind you, we came in
at like four to five.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Yeah, it was early in the morning.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
So clearly it was dark, and clearly I didn't range correctly.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
But I do want to say that I did tell
you it's like one hundred and fifty two hundred yards.
I did say that. You did say that, but mine
was elsewhere.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Yeah, but like I saw, I just saw the binoculars.
I was like, okay, they say three hundred yards, I'm
ranging it to three hundred yards. And as he said before,
it was one fifty yards. So I made my shot
that I mean, I was also shivering, yeah, cold and
buck fever and like I actually did make that shot

(08:11):
and I was on it, but I've I like flew
over it because of that over ranging.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Yeah, and I mean it happened like we I've always
told you, like, hey, look like you do this long enough,
and I've seen you make some amazing shots. Like I've
seen you make some really good shots on some deer
at further distances. I'm always reminded of the last the
one of the last times that we hunted together, like
two or three years ago, three probably three years ago.

(08:43):
Now you made a quartering two shot perfect on a
deer dropped him with him ten yards and that was
like two hundred and sixty yards, so like you can shoot,
but like you just ranged him wrong. You dilled your
scope to one, which is what I told you. It's like, hey,
if you get like round three hundred, you know some
track to you should be like really close, like really close.

(09:04):
And that just wasn't the case there. You know, it
just didn't work out.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
But you know that stuff happens.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Oh it does it? Does it?

Speaker 5 (09:13):
You know?

Speaker 2 (09:14):
Uh? Well, I guess to provide context a little bit
more like in depth knowledge of this, like what are
some of the takeaways that you would you would advise,
you know, youth hunters that are transitioning to those adult
years of hunting in maybe harsh conditions.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
The true please be patient. I mean I wasn't very patient.
Like I knew it was dark, I knew that was
in the best conditions, and I knew that I can
really properly see out of my scope too.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
I know, it sounds like I'm throwing every single excuse
of the book, like it was raining, the scope was weird.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Others range finders were all range.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
Finders were I know, but like it was actually stuff
that happened.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
Yeah, no, it does, and it happens like we get
we get excited, we get those those nerves. Yeah, I
just want to go.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
I definitely they were definitely gonna stay for a little longer.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
Yeah, And.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
I could have. I could have waited for better conditions
because there was a brief period of time where it
stopped training. I'm pretty sure they would have stayed for
that period. Yeah, and not to mention after like I shot,
I was like, okay, well I'm going over to the
truck for blood. Yeah there was no blood, so I
probably could have if I waited, they probably would have
come back.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
But right, because you're shooting a suppressor, I think the
gear that the gear that you're using is a razor
scope from Vortex, which is those are great scopes. Like
the more I play with those, I love them. Christiansen
Ridgeline f ft uh scope or gun in six five
Creed morning. Like you said, and then your suppressor, you

(10:57):
like shooting suppressed? I do much better.

Speaker 3 (11:01):
It's just it's just like shooting, you know.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
And how's how's your confidence level with the gun? What
would you say on a scale of like let's say
one to ten. Would like if conditions were correct and
you were.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
What are your okay, if conditions were correct, I would
say like an eight. But like my confidence with the
gun while out there, I was like I was like
already like with a level of like a six. Yeah,
maybe a seven, but yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
Well things happen and you never know what's going to
happen in the field. Conditions can turn. You got to
be prepared, right right, And we had talked about that
one time before on a podcast.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Right, yeah, we have.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
All right, all right, let's jump in here. We're going
to take a quick break, and when we come back,

next door neighbor. What's it like living across the street
from me?

Speaker 6 (14:45):
Oh, it's pretty funny. Scene on the pack. You just
come in all the time.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
Whoaa, don't say something like that. Come on, you're throwing
me under the bus here.

Speaker 4 (14:54):
It's pretty cool because like just because you know how
to do everything, so it's like the good advice and everything.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Yeah, okay, yeah, I can already tell we're gonna have
a great interview. So this is this is you went
out with us before season started, and you got every
you got everything ready, You went out and set up
the feeders, and you you did all the cool stuff.
So tell me what what was your first impression of Oklahoma.

Speaker 6 (15:18):
I thought it was like.

Speaker 4 (15:19):
It was I was kind of surprised that there was
deer here because it was like no trees or anything.
And I thought it was like really cool in the
way it was nice because it's like real hot here,
but it was nice and like it got hot during
the day, but the breeze made it feel nice.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Nice, awesome. All right, So your first okay, so this
is this is your first time going to Oklahoma to hunt,
and and it's a different it's a different thing. So
when we were out there and we were filling the feeders,
we got a chance and you were shooting the sig
Cross and it's outfitted with a loophole Mark five HD

(15:55):
but you were, this is awesome. Uh. I got you
on the right and here again comes Jocomo. He wants
he wants attention. Uh So I got you out on
the range to shoot the gun before season started. So
what did you think?

Speaker 4 (16:09):
I thought it was a very nice gun because and
it was really quiet and the recoil.

Speaker 6 (16:13):
Wasn't hard at all. It was like smooth.

Speaker 4 (16:15):
The trigger like the two touch trigger, it was really
nice and it just like seemed like it could kill something.

Speaker 2 (16:23):
Oh yeah, like and it's dialed in. You fail comfortable.
How far did you shoot that day? Five hundred yeah,
five hundred yards. And what's interesting about that is so
so before season and everything, and before we got to season,
like I went out and shot the guns again. Make
sure they're on and make sure they're clean, make sure
they're good to go. A lot of that stuff on

(16:44):
the gun was like loose because I was like, I
was like, we're hitting stuff, but we're not, Like it's
not right. And it was able to tighten the group up.
But always note to self, note to you guys out there,
always check the screws on your gun and everything. Make
sure everything's tightened down because if you're getting like bigger groups,
and you don't think it's right. Something might be loose.

(17:05):
So all right, let's come to you season. We get
there late at night, we set up camp you. Let's
fast forward because your first hunt rained out. Yeah, nothing,
didn't see anything. You saw cow pies, cows and the
inside of a box car.

Speaker 6 (17:23):
Is that about rights?

Speaker 2 (17:25):
And a couple of birds? What kind of birds? Pros
or something? Yeah? All right, So I switched you stands
because you had you had you've shot deer before, but
not hadn't shot a buck yet. So I set you
in where jet just missed a big tear and I

(17:47):
think it. I think it was. I don't know if
it's that big, but if it's the one that is
coming up later in this series is pretty big. So
talk to me you. I switched you stands, and we
went out early in the afternoon. We set up a
blind for you to get you close. I think it
was like one hundred and twenty yards is that about right?

(18:08):
All right, so walking me through your hut.

Speaker 4 (18:11):
So we were kind of getting there, and we didn't
see anything for about the first thirty an hour. Minutes
in and right whenever it's like about a hit sunrise
my dad sees a buck coming from the left, and
I get up on the gun and he's broadside and
he walks behind the feeder. So my dad said, just
wait a second and he'll come back to the right.
So he came back to the right, and then I

(18:33):
shout him, and I remember my dad said he heard
like the hit the bullet hit him, and then we
saw him run to the right. And that night we
couldn't find him because we found guts in the blood yep.
So then the next morning we got the dog out
and we found him.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
So, man, there's a lot to unpack there. There's a lot.
So I got the call that says you shot because
I couldn't hear you because you're shooting suppressed, which is
great love. I love shooting suppressed. So I got there
and your dad was very confident. He ran down this
way and he lost sight of him, and so you

(19:08):
and Knox started walking. I started walking, and then your
dad had said, hey, we set a pack down there
with blood, and he like pulled me aside and was like, hey,
it's not a lot of blood. And I'm like I'm
like okay, I'm like that's not ideal, But so what
was funny about it was. I was like, hold on.

(19:29):
So we started walking down. We started walking down, and
we were surveying the area, and I decided, you know what,
let's go look that blood, because there's a lot that
the blood at the impact can tell us. There's a lot.
I mean, whether it's a long hit, guts, liver, or
anything like that. So I walked back up and I
look and there's a little glob about like that big,

(19:51):
about an inch an inch and a half wide, and
I knew immediately, okay, that deer's gut shot. It turned
out it was more liver hit. There's a little bit
more liver. So you got a little bit of both,
you know. And then your dad asked me. He was like,
I was like, we're pulling out. We're not going to
look for tonight. What was that like for you that night?

(20:11):
Were you like, okay, well, we'll just find in the morning.

Speaker 4 (20:14):
Well, I thought it was better because, like I just
thought it was we were just going to keep pushing
him down, and I thought he was just going to
keep going down, and I was just kind of okay
with it because I just I didn't really think he
was dead that night.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
Yeah. See, yeah, now you had a different reaction than
your dad did, because your dad was like, I would
have pushed him. I would have kept going, you know,
to find him. But not the case. Not what we
needed to do. If you if you get a gut
shot deer, usually the best thing to do is let
him lay overnight, let him stiffen up, let him let
him sit there, and let him let him die. It's

(20:46):
not that is what happened. Thank goodness. We backed out, yeah,
because then your dad asked me. He was like, hey,
do you know anybody with guys with guys with dogs
around here? And I was like, I have no idea.
It turns out like there's a whole network of people
who do this, like a guide tracker Guide Dog Tracker
Association something like that. We called the guy and he's like, hey,

(21:08):
we'll come out at nine o'clock and look for him,
and and it was what was really hopeful for me.
I think the best thing that we did was when
I got back and I was looking and I was
changing my pants for the night and getting into my
sleeping shorts. There was blood on the side of my
pants and so I was like, Okay, he he's bleeding.

(21:31):
Good because I walked through taller grass and that blood
had brushed up against my pant leg, and so I
was like, Okay, we were on the right track. I
think we did the right thing. Nine o'clock turns out
the guy comes up, his dog's running around. I'm walking
up the hill, and the funniest thing I'm like, is
that the deer.

Speaker 6 (21:51):
Yeah, I remember going, oh, there's your deer.

Speaker 4 (21:54):
Then we walked over to it and it was like, pretty,
it's kind he's got to it.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (22:00):
So but he had a pretty big body on him.

Speaker 2 (22:02):
Oh it's a huge body. It was a great deer.
I mean it was a solid eight point a good
Oklahoma deer. I was really proud of you and the
way you handled it because I wouldn't have been able
to stand it, because because we wanted to push that
We would like to push that deer and to find
it quick. But the best thing to do.

Speaker 4 (22:19):
Was back then, Yeah, because I don't think so he
ran down that like little wash out and and then
he ran back up it and that's where he died.

Speaker 6 (22:26):
So I think if we kept pushing and he.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
Just would have kept running, So yeah, yeah, he probably
would have. We may have not found him. You know,
the dog probably would have found him eventually. But what
what that what happened was was I mean, the deer
was in an obvious place where if we would have
looked that night, you know, you'd have been like, how
would you have missed that? But it was amazing that

(22:48):
dog was running around, running around, and he wouldn't go
near the deer. And the guy told us, what do
you remember what he told us? He said he said
that that it was the coyotes he was tracking because
the coyotes had run him all over that area. They
and they killed him right up there, so he didn't
bed there.

Speaker 6 (23:09):
Yeah, they said the kyutes got to him and killed
him there.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
Yeah. It was I mean it was It was unbelievable.
So what was the feeling like after that? Well, after
I killed him and everything, after you got your hands
on him, I.

Speaker 4 (23:22):
Was like, this is like I've never touched a book
like in a field right dead, and I thought like, dang,
this is like pretty cool. And I remember like everybody
was there and it was just like really it was
a really like cool moment and feeling just you know,
holding up antlers for the first time.

Speaker 2 (23:37):
Well, I know, and I'm not going to give anything away.
But like we were, we only had one more hunt
to get one down. And man, congratulations on your first book.
Man you did you did a great job. I think
you're shot. You killed it. That's what we want. But

(23:58):
next year we've already decided we're all going to go
out to the range more. I hope you're coming back.
You're always You're always welcome to come back. Maybe we'll
get him out in November. Maybe November. That would be fun.
Then then we'll just let you and Knocks hunt together.
That would be horrible. Well, I can't wait to get

(24:19):
you back out. I know we're gonna have a lot
of fun, all right, Knocks, Yes, it's how you're going
to talk.

Speaker 5 (24:30):
I feel like it.

Speaker 2 (24:31):
Yeah, all right, So this is your first season taking
a friend hunting.

Speaker 6 (24:38):
Yes it is.

Speaker 2 (24:39):
So talk to me a little bit about Peyton.

Speaker 5 (24:43):
Uh so he's very annoying.

Speaker 2 (24:46):
I'm just kidding.

Speaker 5 (24:50):
So, yeah, he's good. Make fun of each other like
that's that's what friends do.

Speaker 2 (24:57):
Right, That's what friends do.

Speaker 5 (24:58):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (24:58):
All right, So what what was it like taking him
to Oklahoma? First?

Speaker 5 (25:03):
It was doing To be honest, I just wanted him
to I just wanted him to shoot a deer.

Speaker 2 (25:08):
A buck preferably, that would be it, right, Yes, I
mean so what were you most excited to show him
in Oklahoma? To show him this is his first time.

Speaker 5 (25:19):
To show him the best place ever.

Speaker 2 (25:21):
Which is Broms. Broms. Yes, they are not a sponsor.
So so what is uh what advice did you give him?
I'm kind of curious about, like when when you two
would talk alone about going to Oklahoma, what advice were
you giving him or tips?

Speaker 5 (25:43):
Well, he is stay on the guard if you shoot, like,
don't go like put your head up, like, oh you
go there? Like that?

Speaker 2 (25:52):
You were telling any more shooting tips rather than what
to order at McDonald's.

Speaker 5 (25:57):
Well, I did do that. I did do that, Like, hey,
why you do? It's get the ice cream of Broms.

Speaker 2 (26:02):
Get the ice cream abro. That's a good tip. I
guess that's a I guess that's the goodest tip as any. Yeah.
So all right, so you went out there helped fill
feeders with us, like you you shot? Yeah, how what
was your comfort level with the gun because you were
shooting my custom like my competition gun basically.

Speaker 5 (26:23):
Well, see I felt really good with that gun because
well I already shot a bear with it?

Speaker 2 (26:29):
True, all right, that's fair. So I've shot a lot
of things with that gun I have, yes, like you
you've shot some deer with that gun?

Speaker 5 (26:40):
Okay, so yeah, I feel comfortable.

Speaker 2 (26:43):
With Yeah, so give me like shooting suppressed versus unsuppressed.
Where do you land suppressed? Why?

Speaker 5 (26:56):
Well, because I don't like getting in my ears, like
when someone shows up like hey, he brokes something over there,
and then I'm just scrambling to get my ears in.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
I'm just like, h so you don't like to put
your ear plugs in or your ear yeah? Okay, all right,
that makes.

Speaker 5 (27:12):
No more sense because in Canda, when like a bear,
the bear showed up like like, so I was like, Crampa,
there's a bear, and he was like getting the gun ready,
and I'm just over there trying to get my ears
ready and I could barely see, so like I was
like trying to check like which one's right, which was left,

(27:33):
and then like some of them, I would be like, oh,
it's not in tight enough and yeah.

Speaker 2 (27:38):
Yeah all right. So walk me through the first few
sets you had with me. Let's talk about the rainy
set and the cow set. So what were those sets like?
So We had one where we were sitting in the rain,
and then another one where we were bombarded by cows.

Speaker 5 (27:58):
Yes, so we were just in going hunting. But we
didn't think it was gonna r. I don't know, at
least I didn't think. I don't know about you.

Speaker 2 (28:08):
I didn't know.

Speaker 5 (28:09):
So we were just hunting. It was going good, except
then I follow drop onto my head like and nothing
like that happened to gold time, and we kept going
and then it started pouring a bit at we now
shype sleep.

Speaker 2 (28:25):
Oh, well, we don't want to bother your sleep, do it.

Speaker 5 (28:27):
Yeah, yeah, don't bother me while I'm sleep. And so
I was just sleeping. But then it started pouring on us.
We thought we could power through it. No, we had
to head to the truck.

Speaker 2 (28:40):
Yeah, So we sat in the truck. We ended up
seeing a deer, or we saw three deer, yes, and
we ended up not being able to get on them
because they were too far away. The wind was drawn
well then that afternoon, so you learned that jet had missed. Yes,
And then that evening we get and it's hot, it's

(29:01):
really hot, and it's windy, and then there were cows.

Speaker 5 (29:06):
Yeah, so we were trying to hunt, and like we
found them like an okay spot, not the best spot,
but okay. And then like we saw a bit of
cows and all like and they won't bother us, pauly
because usually they're like scared of us, right, No, they
were all bois.

Speaker 6 (29:26):
And I was like, these cows.

Speaker 5 (29:29):
Leave us alone. We're trying to hunt because I was
worried something will come up behind the cows, and like
I would actually or just shoot a cow.

Speaker 2 (29:38):
Oh no, we do not want that.

Speaker 5 (29:40):
Yeah, we don't, but it would be good.

Speaker 2 (29:43):
It would taste good.

Speaker 5 (29:44):
Yeah, but if it was one four or what was
it eighty something?

Speaker 2 (29:48):
Oh, eighty nine four or one. Yeah, those are the
cows that we have ear marked and they have ear
tags in them that they may get eaten at the
end of the year because they were knocking over our
trail camp.

Speaker 5 (30:01):
Yeah, I would be happy if I shot one of
those ones.

Speaker 2 (30:05):
All right, Okay, So moving forward, Now you learn that
Peyton has shot one. What goes through your mind?

Speaker 5 (30:12):
Also, So he texted me he long shotted it, and
I was like, that's a good shot. He should be dead.
But it I like, I didn't know he didn't not
long shot he got shot, so but all I thought
was he long shot it and it's going to be
easy to find.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
Yeah, all right, we tried to.

Speaker 5 (30:35):
Find me and Payton went off like a completely opposite
direction from you guys, and we were like, I can't
see anything, and so yeah, it.

Speaker 6 (30:46):
Wasn't the best.

Speaker 5 (30:48):
So you asked me to like you gave me a number,
I'd put it in and like, so write it down,
so you call it.

Speaker 2 (30:55):
Call it, call a guy for a number. Yeah, chair,
don't tear up our chairs. Quit picking on it. So
all right, so we don't find it. We go back
to bed, and then we hunted the next morning. Yes,
talk to me about that.

Speaker 5 (31:14):
So we're hunting with you, me and Jet. Yeah, and
that I was shooting first cause I'm the only one
who hasn't.

Speaker 2 (31:23):
Shot, right, which is fair.

Speaker 5 (31:25):
And we think that the same group that came came
for Jet that he missed Cook and like.

Speaker 2 (31:34):
You just woke me up and like again waking you up?

Speaker 5 (31:38):
Yes, and no, I was like and I got up
pretty factor, like like up show there's a ton of
blocks and I'm like bucks and I said there was
just still it's just fair. But no, it's like three blocks.

Speaker 2 (31:48):
Right, oh no, it was like six There was like
six bucks there, and.

Speaker 5 (31:53):
So I was getting ready for the going and I
was and you were like can you see it? And
I'm like, like, can't see it? Where is it?

Speaker 2 (32:01):
Which now he has glasses.

Speaker 5 (32:03):
Yes, so now I can hope see it. And then
like I thought I saw there was like an earlier.
I was like using my binoculars and I saw this
like blob. It was like same. We were in the
same spot where pain shot. Yeah, and so I saw
this blob. I thought that it was this is like

(32:24):
after I saw the things is unrelated. Yeah, And I
was like, hmmmm, is that paints deer now? And because
I thought it was just a shadow, it was paint deer.

Speaker 2 (32:37):
Yeah, So you kind of found that. You kind of
had eyes on it before anybody else. So take us
into the shot, so you find the deer. And I'm
gonna say that was a good deer.

Speaker 5 (32:49):
I know, Okay, God beat me up about it. So,
like I was thinking, my brain was like, hey, you
have to make a perfect shot, and like I was
aiming for like a tiny spot right here, like super small,
not even decided to attacking probably yeah, And I was
just like, oh yeah, that's a good shot.

Speaker 2 (33:08):
Uh huh.

Speaker 5 (33:08):
I shot and I literally shot right under it.

Speaker 2 (33:12):
Oh yeah, yeah, I saw it. So what he's doing
and what he's describing is is he's he's not aiming
for right behind the shoulder. He was aiming for like
the heart, which is lower in a small crease like
that's where he was aiming. And that's what I found
out after he was shooting, because I was watching on

(33:33):
the trigger cam. I was trying to watch and I
knew like immediately that you had missed because the deer
kind of popped up and he just kind of stood there,
like what just happened?

Speaker 5 (33:40):
Yeah, And so then Jack got on the gun. Yeah,
he saw them like over there. But like, I didn't
you say that you didn't think he had a shot
on it what he did?

Speaker 2 (33:50):
Yeah, I didn't think he was aimed up correctly, and
he had him in his sights and he was fixing
oppress the trigger and I called I like kind of
almost pulled him off off the gun to like try
to try to line him up. But I should have
just trusted him.

Speaker 5 (34:04):
Yeah, And so earlier later on, you said, hey, want
to go like where the deer's resting spots? Are and
I was like, yeah, sure, because like we didn't have
anything out better to.

Speaker 2 (34:16):
Right, we were just waiting around till nine o'clock and
the dog patrol came in. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (34:20):
We were walking around and I was I thought you
saw a ton of deer like at place and you
were going to them, did you know?

Speaker 2 (34:29):
Like I knew the direction they were headed, and I
knew the area that they would be in. I just
didn't see him because like.

Speaker 5 (34:35):
You got scoping in and going like stamp and I'm like, okay,
over there, and I thought you saw it.

Speaker 2 (34:41):
Oh no, And then.

Speaker 5 (34:43):
We have actually did see a kyo. You shot it? Yeah,
and I found it blood earlier.

Speaker 2 (34:48):
Yeah you did. Yeah, you saw it.

Speaker 5 (34:50):
And then we came back and you saw the deer
and this is what And then like you pointed out
to the guy who like had the dog. Yeah, and
this is what he said, we know, let the dog
find it.

Speaker 2 (35:03):
And I was like, but I found it. Give me
a brownie or a cookie.

Speaker 5 (35:07):
Or something like, that's mine. I found it.

Speaker 6 (35:11):
It's and so.

Speaker 5 (35:13):
And me and Payne. This is what you said, man,
that bullet and number all that deer all the time.

Speaker 2 (35:20):
Yeah, the guys basically took off the back half of
the deer.

Speaker 5 (35:24):
It was mainly Pain's idea.

Speaker 2 (35:25):
And yeah, how did it smell? So you're given you're
given Payton credit for the joke that he told that
you retold. Yes, Okay, that's good and.

Speaker 5 (35:36):
So yeah, I'm glad that he shot a deer.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
But what was the feeling. What was the feeling like
once we've we've had the deer and you know it's
his first buck, it felt good.

Speaker 6 (35:47):
And so it's something though.

Speaker 5 (35:49):
While you guys were skinning it, me and Pain were
just like just doing stuff and you threw its face.

Speaker 2 (35:55):
At us because I had skinned it out and I
was just messing with you. I almost hit Peyton with it.

Speaker 5 (36:02):
Really, yes, And so y'all you guys finished skinning it.
You threw the body off a cliff, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (36:13):
For the cows to eat, because after that then, I
mean the meat is not really good. Yeah, because if
you got to thank gut shot and then the ky
it's will be eaten on it. So yeah, and that's
I think the biggest thing that I wish Peyton would
have is a taste of Oklahoma, dear. He got a
taste of what it's like to hunt him. But now
we got to take him back and get him on

(36:33):
one so he can eat it.

Speaker 5 (36:34):
Yes he does so, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (36:38):
That's it right, yeah one trip.

Speaker 1 (36:40):
Those kids surprise me every single time and in that
field report. What I'm taking away from it in my
final notes is, man, you're gonna have some highs and
lows on these youth hunts, and they're usually all highs.
Misses are gonna happen. If you hunt long enough, you're
gonna encounter a few of them along the way. But

(37:01):
as long as you take in the atmosphere and the
energy that kids bring to a hunt, I don't think
that's something you're going to get rid of. So just
hold on to them like you do your own kids.
Hold on to those memories, and you'll have a blast
in the field.

Speaker 2 (37:17):
That's it for us. All.

Speaker 1 (37:18):
You gotta talk hunters, you know what to do. Keep
those muzzles point in a safe direction, and always be
on the hunt.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
