They've got an unmatched selection.

Fast, free shipping, free road hazard protection, and more than
ten thousand recommended installers.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Tire reck dot Com is the way tirebuying should be.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
And of course this right here, The Odd Couple is
the way sports talk radio should be.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
And we are on a Memorial Day.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
But Rob Parker and I are putting in work.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
What's up man? How are you?
Speaker 1 (01:25):
I know people are like adjusting their radios, like, is
this a repeat? I never knew the Odd Couple had repeats.
On holidays. We don't have any repeats. We are live
on memory recks. That's right, all that, that is right.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
I've been working all day, man, I did first things
first today and now.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
I am no barbecue anything. Now my wife, actually she's too,
she's working.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
Yeah, she went to work early this morning and is
on call tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Believe it or not, really.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Medical seniority, what's she doing working a Memorial day?
Speaker 4 (02:05):
You know they they all the partners sometimes got to rotate.
But she gets believing or that she gets eight weeks
of vacation. Wow, eight weeks, so she got more vacation.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Doctors need that, Seriously, It's a lot. It's a lot.
I mean, I'm not a doctor, but I just know.
But you know what I mean. Like people think, it's
a lot of stressful.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
Work, incredible stressful, incredibly stressful, and you have to keep
you know, learning, because new stuff happens.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
You got to be updated.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
Yep, she just got back from a conference that they
required to update your your knowledge on. And I'm telling you, man,
watching her go through medical school because we're dating at
the time, that's something where you you really better want it.
Like like journalism, Rob, I'm majored in English. You could
get through it. You're not totally sure what you want
(02:59):
to do, but you know you can get through English medicine.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Nah, you bet.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
It weeds out people though. That's but that that happens
and West and that's what it should do, Chris, because
you're dealing with exactly. It's definitely serious. We know ours
is our profession is more and it weeds people out too.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
But it's fun and it's uh uh and uh.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
It's very competitive. It's just very very competitive. So many
people want to do what we do and we talk
about it, Chris. They're not thirty two media outlets on
the same part like in the major leagues or NBA.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
It's only like two or three.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
That's like that, like, that's really it, and all these
people are trying to fit into two or three spots.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Absolutely, it's hard, Nah, no doubt, no doubt.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
And of course it's a memorial day, as we say
and Rob I had, we want to honor all of
the veterans and the people even now who are protecting
our country. Both of my grandfathers, Burley Bruceard and Leonard Beauregard,
they fought in World War two and my father, Edward Bruceard,
(04:12):
was in Vietnam. So I want to honor them and
all the veterans out there and those who are in
the service right now.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Right and I'd like to send that same message out.
My dad was in the military the Korean War, Chris,
and my late.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Dad, Robert Parker, Robert Lee Parker Senior. Yes.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
And my brother who you've met, was in the military
and an FBI agent, and so send out he was
did both, I mean yes, And so I want to
send that out to those, to my people, my family,
and to everybody else who was either in the military
or we lost in the military, who's still in the military, yep.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
And also Rob of course, the legend Bill Walton passed
today seventy one years old.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
We're gonna give a full tribute can the.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Second hour of the show and will allow you to
call in and tell us your memories about Bill Walton.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yes, died of cancer.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Rob and uh a tremendous player, career only played ten
years and where his career was injury Layton. Oh yeah,
so he still made the Hall of Fame, won a championship.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Some of those videos Chris with the with the with
his red hair. You know how red it was what
you oh my god, big red. Uh, it was great.
It was great to see Bill Wilton and then he
wound up being a colorful guy on television.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
But it was great on telling We'll do all that fantastic, yes,
and uh we were talking about that in the second hour.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
All right.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
We got the Eye Couple crew, uh in for Rob
g The super producers are Man Patrick's sweet contrack.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
What's up everybody, sir, We've got you just heard him,
Kevin wired on the updates, that's right, Kevin will keep
us updated.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
And on the social media our man Elijah Sabunia.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Looking up working on the holiday I get it a lot.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
And on the ones and TUIs you know it ain't
DJ Alex Tysher and of course is that's right Mary.
Mary is doing her thing, all right, Ron, speaking of
doing their thing, man, the Dallas Mavericks up three to
zero on the Minnesota Timberwolves. And you got something to
(06:23):
say to these t wolves because this is what I'm saying,
and you alluded to this way earlier.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
People shouted you down.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
There were people said, you know, we weren't watching them
and they were different.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
And everybody we saw it.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
I think the inside the NBA crew, Chris all picked
Minnesota to move on right thick Minnesota. Know I was
overwhelming though, It is what I'm just trying to say, right,
wasn't it overwhelming?
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Yep?
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Like because people bought into that they were going to
buck the odds, they were going to be different that usually, Chris,
is a pathway, right, that usually you have to take.
And people looked at them and said, well, they knocked
off Denver, while people kind of overlooked the three losses
in a row after they were up to oh and
a couple at home, and because they won, you know,
(07:12):
because they won. We talk about all the time. Winning
covers up a lot of things. But I think it's
pretty clear the Minnesota Timberwolves are fraud.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Wow, fraud to.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
The Capitol f Yes or Memorial games just lose this.
They gotta be fraudulent. Only from this standpoint, Chris, they
were ready. I know they look ready, but they weren't ready.
And these games have proven that they aren't ready. It
ain't like they got run out of the gym.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
And they weren't. The games are close.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
That's what I'm saying, Chris. This is what these are
games that they were definitely in and could have won,
and they didn't win, it mattered most. That's why I
look at this. If they got blown out by thirty
and I really didn't belong to the gym because they
got lucky and stumbled into frauds.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
If they were getting demolished in this, no, no, no,
it would be a different kind of fraudulent.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
This here, this is different because I think people really
thought that the ant man was there, that he was
going to take this next step. They looked at it, Chris,
you talked about earlier. I remember when we talked about
the series with Denver. What can you do to stop
(08:30):
these guys? You know what I mean, don't. I don't
know what changes can be made, you know, or adjustments
to stop that's what they look like.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
They like world beaters at one point.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Like like, what could you do to stop this from
from them getting to the finals without having to go
through the normal progression that we've talked about in the
NBA and we've seen. All I'm saying is when I
say frauds, Chris, they weren't ready for this party. They
weren't ready for a trip to the NBA finals. It
really looked good. It felt good for a lot of people.
(09:03):
You know, I picked Dallas. I just didn't buy into
a woman. I'm not saying that I didn't like Anthony
Edwards or or you know what I mean, or what
they had put together.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
They beat them with the defending champs.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
They get credit, you get credit for that, but I
just don't think that they were really ready to take
that next step. And I think we could find the
tape where we talked about it. You too, and you
changed your mind on them because I think of what
you saw them do to Denver, but you would originally,
(09:33):
Chris and and tell me, if I'm putting words in
your mouth, you originally didn't think they were going to
be able to get there because of this playoffs? Yeah, yeah,
like that they were like they were going to they
were going to be able to get there.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
My question during the season, as Minnesota and Oklahoma City
were running through the Western and.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
Lean I'm talking about That's what I'm talking about. My
question was are they for real?
Speaker 4 (10:01):
Because they're young and okay, see went down in six
to Dallas and they'll be better next year for it,
Minnesota looks like they're going down. I mean nobody's ever
come back from three to zero, Rob, I do think
this thing is over.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
We'll see if they get a game or two.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Right, sweet, but right, right, But it's not definitely. They
could win a game, but are they gonna win four straight? No,
it's just not gonna happen.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
I think those two teams have proven they're for real,
no doubt about that. And Rob and I knew this,
but I thought because Karl Anthony Towns, Rudy Gobert, Mike
Conley a nice supporting cast, that they be able to
overcome it. But the fact of the matter is Rob, never,
(10:51):
in the history of the NBA, which goes back we
know more than seventy five years excuse me years, has
a twenty two year old player led a team to
the championship. This goes all the way back to George
Mike and before him.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Never.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
The only one close, Tim Duncan was twenty three when
the Spurs won it nineteen ninety nine, but he had
David Robinson, who was still, you know, right there, probably
at the end of his prime.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
Of course, Shot or Kobe.
Speaker 4 (11:30):
And Magic Johnson won championships Young Kobe twenty two, Mike
or Magic twenty Kobe might have been twenty one, I think,
and Magic was twenty, but they.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Weren't the best players on their team.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
Kobe has shot and Michael Magic had Kareem and so
it's never happened.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
And I was not thinking Anthony.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
Edwards is on is better than those players are on
their or even on their level. But I thought as
the team was good, and even though he was the
best player, he still had a really good supporting cast.
And Rob, we're seeing right now why no twenty two
year old has ever lived, because he's still trying to
figure it out, right, he's, you know, trying to figure
(12:18):
out how aggressive to be, you know, when do I
try to take over? When do I get my teammates involved.
He's learning as we speak. And also Rob, he is
and by his own admission, exhausted. And when you look
at him, even as he was playing well in game three,
you know it certainly had a stretch. He's still his
(12:40):
body language, he looks tired to me, and I don't
to a lot of people say he's twenty two.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
How's he tired? Rob, He's never played this many games.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
No, not, and certainly not you can say, oh a
you they're playing on no these types of games where
the emotional intensity is off the charts. He ain't used
to this, and so this is why nobody his age
ever has.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Been able to lead the team to the championship.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
I will say this, Rob, I don't know if he'll
win a ring, but I think he'll win a ring.
And if that happens, Rob, I do think whenever it is,
they will this series.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
We will look at this like.
Speaker 4 (13:22):
Kobe's air ball in Utah, even though he wasn't he
hasn't played that bad.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
At Anthony Edwards. We'll look at.
Speaker 4 (13:29):
It like Jordan the Jordan Rules when Detroit had to
teach him right, beat him up and get him tougher.
We'll look at Isaiah, you know, throwing the ball away
and Larry Bird stole it like these are moments that
everyone's had to go through.
Speaker 5 (13:46):
This.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
I think we'll see if there's more before he wins.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
This I think is his moment Lebron getting swept by
the Spurs and O seven.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
This is that moment for Anthony Edwards.
Speaker 4 (14:00):
Oh and he also getting absolutely zero help Rob from
his second best player, Karl Anthony Towns, who's shooting twenty
seven percent from the field.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Who looked at thirteen percent from three who looked unstoppable.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
Chris early on in the postseason looked like my god,
boyd that turnaround?
Speaker 3 (14:21):
But anyway, eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
Eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox, Rob says the
Timberwolves are frauds. I say this is just part of
the growing process. What say you? Eight seven seven ninety
nine on Fox. You'll turn away in with the Odd
Couple Chris and Rob.

They've got an unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free role
hazard protection, and more than ten thousand recommended installers. Tirereg
(15:54):
dot com is the way tirebine should be Now. We
announced earlier and it's all over the news and television
and everywhere. The legendary basketball player and broadcaster Bill Walton
passed away today at seventy one years old of cancer.
(16:15):
We're going to talk about him, Rob and I at
the bottom of the hour, and then we don't usually
do this, but we will have a second round of
calls this hour for you to weigh in and give
your thoughts on Bill Walton. So we'll take our normal
(16:35):
calls at five twenty Pacific eight twenty Eastern on the
topic we're about to start in a few moments, and
then we will give you a chance to call in
if you want to say pay tribute or something about
Bill Walton.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
So we're gonna do that this hour, but rob Let's start.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
I'm always hopeful Chris that when people die like this
Bill Walton, that younger people don't really know him as
a player, just know him that he's seen him on ESPN,
will take time to really find out about people, you
know what I mean. Like a lot of times people
when people are a lot people don't know they look
at this guy, Look who's this big, goofy guy on ESPN?
(17:18):
Seriously and they don't and they don't really know the
history or no, and.
Speaker 4 (17:23):
It's history real too, Let's just keep it real. There
are and maybe up until recently.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
This kind of ties into what we're about to talk about.
Speaker 4 (17:35):
Do you think I'm wrong when I say people probably
look at Bill Walton and think, oh, he was this
big white guy. He couldn't play that stuff, right right?
He was, Yeah, he wasn't he played in He couldn't
do nothing. Now, you know, man, Bill Walton was awesome.
And hopefully now when you look at Jokic and you
(17:58):
look at Luca, you look at some of these other
great uh European players, but let they're white. They're white,
all right, You'll see that. Yeah, there were some great
white players back in the day. And there are some today. Now, Rob,
we're trying to find some American was now chat Holgren.
I think he's gonna be a star.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
He's not yet. He'd be the first. Well we'll see
how big of a star. Right.
Speaker 4 (18:23):
There hadn't been a huge white American star probably since
and Stockton was not a celebrity, but he was a
great player, John Stockton. But anyway, Rob, we were taught
you and I were looking at some topics to you know,
talk about tonight, and we had we've talked about kinda
(18:44):
there was some uh skepticism to put it nicely, about NICOLEA. Jokic, Right,
he can't be the best player in the world, and
things like that.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
Turner Chris Evan.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
Turner who said it was like watching baseball, like watching
Jo was like watching baseball of them, which is totally
missive of his right.
Speaker 4 (19:10):
When they lost to Minnesota, he said, I don't ever
want to see him play again.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
It's like watching baseball. And so we.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Were saying, Rob, look, I I think I'm leaning toward
picking Dallas to win the championship. If they do win
the chair, whether I pick him or not. But if
they do win the championship, Rob do you think there
will be an argument. I don't know if I'll feel
(19:40):
like Luca's better than no, you know what, probably not,
but I do think they will be an argument for that.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
But go ahead.
Speaker 1 (19:46):
The amounting thing immediately is no m vps, just no
MVPs yet. And I'm not saying that that's the end
all be all, but if me, that would be more
I hear you not, that's all I'm just saying. I
was saying that I would say this about that because
that's fair, but I would say that that would be
more of a historical rank.
Speaker 4 (20:09):
Like so, so if if something happened and neither of
them could play after this season, Luca wins the championship,
like you said, because Jokic has the three m vps,
he would be.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
Ranked higher than Luca.
Speaker 4 (20:21):
I'm just saying no right now, like you know what
I mean, like the best could there be an argument
that the guy playing the best basketball or the best
player in the world right now is Luca Doches And
let me say this before you answer. If Boston wins,
there to me, there will be no argument that Jason
Tatum's best player in the world.
Speaker 3 (20:42):
Would you agree with that? I don't know, really.
Speaker 4 (20:47):
Because I don't think Jason Tatum is good enough. I
just don't think he's as good as Yokid just.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
Saying that he is. No, I'm saying if because I'm
missing missing.
Speaker 4 (21:01):
If Boston wins the championship, do you think there will
be an argument that Jason Tatum.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
Is Oh, I got you know that we'll not be
an all came about that. I thought you meant I
thought you meant he would be the best player. I
was like, oh, okay, that's what I was saying. Okay,
I'm with you, right, Okay.
Speaker 4 (21:17):
I think if, honestly, if Anthony Edwards is one, I mean,
I think some people would have tried to make that.
Speaker 3 (21:23):
I don't think he's better than Yokic. We'll see. Is
he ever that one day? Who knows?
Speaker 4 (21:28):
But yeah, but I think Luka Rob, I do think
there could be an argument made.
Speaker 3 (21:35):
I'm not sure right now. I feel Jokic.
Speaker 4 (21:37):
I don't know that I'd say Luca, but they're similar
in that, you know, I mean, neither one is what
we you know, what we term athletic right nowadays is
about Athletics is viewed as being able to run fast, very.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
Quick, and jump high and neither of them is that.
Speaker 4 (21:57):
And we were wondering, Rob if the people that don't
like Jokic and don't think he should be viewed as
the best player in the world, do they have the
same issue with Luca.
Speaker 1 (22:08):
That's a real big question Chris on how because you
talk about some of this stuff. As good as Luca
is and how he's been you know, questionable at one point,
you know, defensively, his body putting on weight, you know
what I mean, he's not a leaper. I mean, there's
a lot of stuff that people can look at Luca.
He's a bad boy. We already know about the numbers,
(22:30):
Chris and all that he's put together. But some of
the criticism about the Joker you could criticize Lucer about
as well. And that's why I just wonder what would
be the difference if you weren't that, if you weren't that.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Cool with the Joker, how are you going to be
cool with Luca?
Speaker 1 (22:48):
And then the other part is Luca as a guy
at one of the all time greats who's won a
championship before, you know what I mean with him, whereas
Luca whereas uh uh, the Joker at Yoka Jokic, Chris
had none of that. I had no All star on
his team. I mean, I I just when I look
(23:09):
at it, I just wonder, well, if people will embrace
Luca the way that they Maybe not everybody, I'm not
trying to paint a generalization brush, but not everybody of
the people didn't embrace the Joker.
Speaker 4 (23:25):
No, I hear you, and I think if the Mavericks
win it, and if it does become a discussion, I
think you brought up one point in Yokic just favor
the MVPs. I think now, like you said, neither's great defensively.
(23:46):
I think Jokis probably is better defensively just because of
his size, you know, but neither's really great defensively. Luca's
gotten better, they both, you know. They Luca's just putting
forth more effort now and because of his strength, because
of his smarts, He's become a decent defender. Jokicch I
(24:06):
think is probably a little more effective on the defensive end.
But you brought up what it what would be a
big argument in Jokic's favor Rob, which is he hasn't
had Yeah, I mean, as good as Jamal Murray is,
he's not Kyrie Irving. And you know, Jamal is very clutch.
(24:29):
And another thing about Jamal Rob is he's he's very
injury prone. And even during these playoffs he was banged
up and that heck, maybe if he I don't know
what he played at was he ninety five.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Healthy? Right, maybe they win it.
Speaker 4 (24:47):
But I do think Rob now defense is a legitimate
thing if people want to bring that up about Joannis,
because I think I mean, we're talking about if Luca
Winz maybe's the best player in the world.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
I think these are probably the two best players Yo
Kich and Luca in the world.
Speaker 4 (25:06):
Like Yannis is better defensively by light years ahead of
both of them defensively, but his offense, he doesn't have
nearly the offensive skill that they have. Rob and Embiid's
issue is you just Embiid is phenomenal, but he just can't.
I mean, he's banged up every year come playoff time?
Is Luke every Michu a conference final?
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Is Luca likable, likable Chris or.
Speaker 6 (25:32):
Or not?
Speaker 1 (25:33):
What?
Speaker 3 (25:34):
Your just your opinion.
Speaker 4 (25:36):
I have heard your lortability.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
I know I know you you love his game and
we talked about that, So that's not an issue. I'm
just talking about, well, likability is he is.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
I think you know him.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
I don't know him enough, I think, and we've talked
about this, and some of it probably robed is probably culture.
I mean, if I was in a country and learn
their language and it was my second or third language,
and you know what I mean, I didn't wasn't as
comfortable with the culture.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
I don't know that I'd let my hair hang that
hair down, so to speak.
Speaker 4 (26:11):
You're probably, you know, at times, really just trying to
make sure you say the right thing and and all that.
Speaker 3 (26:17):
So that might be somewhat of an issue. But I
think he is likable.
Speaker 4 (26:23):
He certainly hasn't done anything to make him unlikable, right, And.
Speaker 3 (26:29):
I think people might like the trash talk.
Speaker 4 (26:31):
You saw how he trash talk Rudy Gobert trash talk
the fans after he hit that game winner in Game two.
And at the very least, Rob because you've seen the
commercials with Jokic and Peyton Watson, his teammate in Denver,
is in them with him.
Speaker 3 (26:49):
You know, they're at the pool side, they're in a
hotel with a horse and all that.
Speaker 4 (26:53):
At the very least, you could do things like that
with Luka, don't you think, because you know, Jokic didn't
say in a ton he just kind of, you know,
being there in a very I mean he says a
few things, but you know you could do things like
that with Lucas. So yeah, I think he I think
he's marketing and the dude is so great that, you know,
(27:14):
I think that could override because he win.
Speaker 3 (27:17):
He's not like Tim Duncan. He's got more personality, don't
you think than a Duncan or something. Tim Duncan was
a wet blanket. I mean it really it was. And
you know it's interesting.
Speaker 1 (27:32):
I didn't know Tim very well, or I don't know
many people did Chris now other than the people like
in San Antonio who were around him all the time.
Speaker 3 (27:41):
I don't remember that jokester, you know with his teammates,
you know, with his teammates and all that.
Speaker 4 (27:47):
But he never let any of that out route And
he was about as dull as a player get.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
I mean, it was just he was just cool, being like,
not saying my got his flip flops on him, taking
it easy, like there was not a peep. I'm telling you,
I can't even remember a SoundBite from him Chris like
that when he got on my left or you know
what I mean, like, oh, Tim Duncan's glib or nothing.
(28:17):
This whole career, I don't remember anything, not at all
other than him not being in the game that game
in Miami, like I only hit.
Speaker 3 (28:26):
That shot to force game seven.
Speaker 4 (28:30):
But yeah, I think he I think Luca could be
marketb But and I also think, Rob, if he does
win the championship, you know, I just think you get
a little more comfortable. He's still only twenty five years old.
Even if you're an American at twenty five, you might
just not be out of your shell yet, you know.
Speaker 5 (28:46):
What I mean.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
So I would imagine more of his personality would come out.
And so yeah, I mean, I definitely think he's He's
marketable and his game is just in credible as is Jokicic's.
So this is interesting. Rob, let's throw that out to
the listeners eight seven to seven ninety nine on Fox.
(29:09):
Do you think if Luka Doncic wins this championship that
there would be an argument that he is the best
player in the world right now? For the most part,
it's viewed as Nicola Jokic. Some might say Yiannis. Some
might probably very few, but maybe a couple, saying Bead
(29:33):
and I think Luca would certainly be in the discussion
if he can close this thing out, not saying I
go with him. We'll see how things play out, but
do you think there'd be an argument? Eight seven seven
ninety nine.
Speaker 3 (29:44):

If the Dallas Mavericks go.
Speaker 4 (30:40):
Ahead and win, the championship and we assume Luka Doncics
will lead them.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
Is there an argument?
Speaker 4 (30:49):
Do you think there will be an argument that he
has surpassed Nikola Jokic as the best player in the
NBA or whoever else you think might be the best player?
Speaker 3 (31:00):
A seven seven ninety Fox your thoughts?
Speaker 1 (31:02):
All right, let's kick it off, Chris with Greg in Denver.
You're on the couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Greg?
Speaker 7 (31:09):
Not too much? How you guys doing?
Speaker 8 (31:12):
How are you good?
Speaker 7 (31:13):
I mean, obviously I got a little your kids pull,
but uh, you know, you know what's cool about yo? Bitch?
He doesn't care if he won. He didn't care.
Speaker 3 (31:24):
Nita does the joker? I agree both of them. That's
what the joker are. You're right, we totally don't care. Yeah,
I agree with that.
Speaker 7 (31:32):
But he's also he's also friend. He's also friends right with.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
Or Oh yeah, yeah, they're probably pro Why would.
Speaker 5 (31:42):
Why would he not want it?
Speaker 7 (31:43):
You know what all I gotta say is I don't
want Minnesota to win this. I as long as Minnesota
doesn't win, great. You came up with a way to
beat the Nuggets one time. We're coming back to you
next year.
Speaker 3 (31:55):
See, I would think you would.
Speaker 4 (31:56):
I would think you would what Denver or Minnesota to
win it, because then the Nuggets will have lost to
the eventual champion.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
To me, it looks a little worse for him.
Speaker 4 (32:07):
I'm not saying it's a huge thing, but it looks
a little worse than the team that beats You might
get swept, right, you know what, you.
Speaker 5 (32:14):
Know what I want I want.
Speaker 7 (32:15):
I want the Minnesota to have no, no good things
in their lives for the rest of the year. I
wanted to get swept and to go home and trade
trade Cat and.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
Right Cat, you just better get something for Cat. I mean,
you don't give him away. He ain't making you friends
with his thirteen percent three point shooting. No, primo, is
that South What is that? South Central? I can't yees?
South Central?
Speaker 1 (32:46):
South Central? Man, what's up? You're on the odd couple
of Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 5 (32:51):
Yeah, let me say this, Man, we try to get away.
Speaker 8 (32:54):
We always try to get away from the black white thing,
especially when we're on the air. We're talking lot of people.
But but I just thought about the thing about Man Luca.
Luca even surprised me.
Speaker 5 (33:08):
Man.
Speaker 8 (33:08):
He is such a great basketball player. It is amazing. Man,
it's amazing the shots that he hits, the things that
he does. But but but getting away from from liking
him as far as my personal opinion or my my
background or or anything like that, the conversation, he's not
(33:33):
a very likable dude.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
He really Why you say that?
Speaker 8 (33:38):
Well, he's crying all the time.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
That's you. That's fair.
Speaker 8 (33:41):
You breathe on him that takes the shot.
Speaker 5 (33:45):
He's crying.
Speaker 4 (33:46):
Now, most players in the league today cry to the rest.
But he's just about the worst.
Speaker 8 (33:51):
Question.
Speaker 3 (33:53):
That's a part of the and premode. That's real talk, right,
And he needs to chill.
Speaker 1 (33:56):
He needs to chill on that because it will make
people go he a big baby. I hate watching them
even though it's a great player.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
Right, No, that's fair.
Speaker 5 (34:05):
Let me let me drop this last lug again, this
last lug. I've been listening to your callers and and
all the white guys that called in. They don't want
Minnesota to win. And I'm I'm sitting here part and
I'm thinking to myself, Minnesota is a young team with
(34:25):
maybe the new face of basketball with Anthony arewhich coming up.
But for what reason do they not want Minnesota to
either be Denver or Dallas. What is the reason other
than some kind of stupid racial thing.
Speaker 3 (34:44):
I don't I'm not gonna don't. I mean yeah, I'm
not gonna suit.
Speaker 8 (34:49):
Now.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
It could be you just don't like their team. You
aren't the way they play. You like Lukes, you.
Speaker 1 (34:54):
Don't feel like Minnesota Chris has putting up the all
the work. You have to see that, right, like that
was the you have some people.
Speaker 3 (35:01):
Had or you could be mad Rob that they beat
your team.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Yeah, I'm not jumping to Ronnie in Denver.
Speaker 3 (35:10):
You're on the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Ronnie?
Speaker 9 (35:13):
Hey, what's up?
Speaker 5 (35:14):
Good?
Speaker 8 (35:16):
Good, good good?
Speaker 5 (35:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (35:18):
I think John won't be considered the best in the world.
Speaker 3 (35:24):
You said he won't be. No, who do you think
is the best way of the world? You think is jogic?
Speaker 7 (35:31):
Just yet the seasons done with it?
Speaker 9 (35:34):
Charge to debate fucking.
Speaker 3 (35:36):
Foreign horn people or period?
Speaker 8 (35:40):
Yes, everybody? Yeah, shoot, it's hard to say.
Speaker 3 (35:45):
All right, thanks, Ronnie, appreciate it.
Speaker 10 (35:48):
He just wanted to come on and think out loud
that John in New Hampshire thinking about it. Guys, John,
New Hampshire, you're on the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 9 (36:00):
I need a little bit of what that guy was on.
Speaker 5 (36:02):
I know.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
We were asking his opinion.
Speaker 9 (36:05):
He was like, oh, well, I'll say this. It's always
a pleasure to call into the best national sports talk
radio show in the country. As far as this is,
I think we can kind of turn back the clock
twenty five years once Jordan retired, Before Lebron became the
best player in the world. I don't know, around two
(36:26):
thousand and seven or so, it was a seven eight
year gap where it was fluid, right. If the Lakers
want it was Shack, or it was Kobe, if the
Spurs wont it was Duncan. I think it's going to
be a fluid situation for the next half dozen years.
And I'm kind of on board with Chris. I think
once the Spurs, if they try to win championships and
we know what the feeling is for Yabba, he probably
(36:46):
will be the guy who will have a seven eight
year run as the best in the world. But I
think I'm still that it's going to go back and forth.
It was Giannest three four years ago when he won ship,
then it was your If Luca pulls it off this year,
he's going to be the best player in a lot
of people's opinion. I'm in the Boston area. I don't
think even if the Celtics win, the Tatum can claim
(37:06):
we agree with that.
Speaker 1 (37:07):
Hey, hey, John, let me ask you this, Uh, going in,
where were you in the series? Most people had the Timberwolves.
Where did you?
Speaker 3 (37:16):
Did you like Dallas or were you on the Timberwolves
train like most people.
Speaker 9 (37:21):
I hate saying this because it's, you know, after the fact.
I kind of like Dallas only because they have two
supreme closers and you know, a lot of close games,
you've got Kyrie or Luca that can just win for
you exactly on their own, but they can also set
up other players. There's much great passers as well, and
I think Minnesota was maybe a little flat after beating Denver.
(37:43):
This has happened in the past, where a team upsets
the defending champs and then they're kind of flat the
next series. We saw that the last couple of years. Look,
even the Lakers beat the defending champion Warriors last year
and then they just didn't have it secenber So I
think that that's certainly the case going forward. It's always
a pleasure talking with you and more importantly, always a
pleasure of listening to you.
Speaker 3 (38:03):
Thank you.
Speaker 4 (38:04):
That was a good call, and I think he makes
a great point because you're right, during that era between
Jordan and Lebron, it was kind of, oh, Duncan wanted
he's the best, or Shack wanted. Shack had that dominant
stretch with the three peet rob. So yeah, I think
that was a That was a good call, And I
think one thing I'm looking at in this kind of era,
(38:27):
if you will Rob a parody, right this will be
the sixth straight different championship.
Speaker 3 (38:32):
I kind of want to see does one of these
guys emerge.
Speaker 4 (38:36):
To dominate the era, maybe win two or three championships Jokic, Luca, Jannis,
somebody else, because I do think we'll see if win
Benyama becomes the guy I think he will. But until then,
will one of these guys, you know, win a few
rings and distance themselves ROB from the other top players
(38:57):
right now?
Speaker 3 (38:58):
So that was a good call.
Speaker 4 (38:59):
All Right, We're gonna talk about the late great Bill
Walton around the corner, and they remember you will have
a chance to call in eight seven, seven ninety nine
on Fox to give us your thoughts on Bill Walton,
who died today at the age of seventy one of cancer.
Speaker 3 (39:15):
Here's Kevin Wyer with the update. keV.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
Yeah, they're underway in Indianapolis, Game four between the Boston
Celtics and Indiana Pacers in this Eastern Conference Final. The
Celtics already ahead in this series three games to none,
so Indiana does need a win to keep their season alive,
and right now, through about nine minutes of the first quarter,
it is the Celtics in front. Twenty three two twenty
(39:37):
Drew Holiday the leading scorer for both sides in this game,
as he's got eight points off three to three shooting
two to two from beyond the three point ark, and
the Pacers hanging around despite shooting poorly so far. They're
just thirty nine percent, including two to seven from beyond
the three point arc, but they're only down by three
so far, and they are as predicted without Tyrese Halliburton.
(39:58):
In a Game three of the Western Conference Finals in
the NHL that's about to get going, puck drops in
any moment from now. That series tied at one game
apiece between the Stars and the Edmonton Oilers. Major League Baseball,
only one game going on right now as we speak,
Padres and Marlins down in San Diego. This has been
a pitcher's duel. As this game knotted up at one
(40:18):
run apiece. They're heading to the bottom of the seventh inning.
They're stretching right now at Petco Park. Everything else in
Major actually, we do have one more game coming up
in about an hour Astros and Maryland Mariners up in Seattle,
but everything else in the league has gone final. Oriols
pound the Red Sox eleven to three, twins over the
Royals six to five, Blue Jays beat the White Sox
five to one, and in a game that didn't feature
(40:39):
a run being scored until the eighth inning, the Brewers
come alive late to beat the Cubs five to one.
Up in the Mile High City, it's the Rockies outlast
in the Guardians eight to six. Reds hold down the
Cardinals three to one. Nationals beat the Braves eight to four,
and the Giants in San Francisco beat the Phillies eight
to four. There was another game that was supposed to
be played Dodgers and Mets over at Field, but that
(41:00):
game has been postponed because of rain. They will play
a makeup double header makeup game during a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon.
Speaker 3 (41:07):
Back to you guys, all right, thank you, Kevin and Rob.
We said it.
Speaker 4 (41:13):
Bill Walton passed away today of cancer, seventy one years old.
Speaker 3 (41:20):
What are your what are your thoughts? Did you know
Bill personally?
Speaker 8 (41:24):
No?
Speaker 3 (41:25):
No, I did.
Speaker 1 (41:25):
Now you know, I've read into him a few times
Chris at ESPN, you know what I mean like that,
But I didn't know him, have any kind of relationship
with him.
Speaker 4 (41:34):
I was on, I did some shows with him, did
the ESPN NBA Coast to Coast comes to mind. And
he was very fun to work. You could see Rob,
I mean, he was hilarious. Uh he never held anything back.
He called my takes balder dash and poppycock. I like
(41:55):
him already, but in fun, you know, I mean, I
loved being on with him because it was so fun,
you know what I mean. When a guy has that
much energy and it's saying funny stuff and you kind
of ribbing each other, going back and forth.
Speaker 3 (42:11):
It was a lot of fun.
Speaker 4 (42:12):
So I'm not gonna act like we were great friends,
but you know, I saw him other times just being
around the.
Speaker 3 (42:19):
NBA and covering the league. But really was a fun
guy to be around.
Speaker 4 (42:24):
And we'll talk about him as a player, but what
are your kind of recollections of him.
Speaker 3 (42:31):
It's funny.
Speaker 1 (42:32):
I remember I've been watching obviously all the video Chris
and all the stuff, and just that bright red hair.
I remember the crazy Beard and the trail Blazers. I
just remember that Bill Walton. I also remember the Celtics
Bill Walton, you know at the end, I was.
Speaker 4 (42:49):
A comeback, right, yeah, after one sixth man a year
on that team rob that many think might be the
best ever nineteen eighty six Celtics.
Speaker 3 (42:57):
Yep, was that Bill Fitcher the coach in eighty six.
Speaker 1 (43:00):
I think it was Casey to Casey Jones, Okay, and
Chris obviously, I know the history of UCLA and him
and Kareem and you know what I mean.
Speaker 3 (43:13):
And John Wooden the coach.
Speaker 1 (43:15):
So I just always kind of admired his career, but
always felt like it's a shame that he could never
stay healthy, you know, like like that was what could
have been had that guy ever been healthy, and we
might be talking about him as as one of those
almost certainly a top ten I would have been, yeah,
(43:35):
almost an iconic figure.
Speaker 4 (43:37):
But he was career was derailed for the most part. Well,
speaking of that career, right in my first what are
you thinking of more?
Speaker 1 (43:45):
Do you think about him as a I'm just a
trailblazer at UCLA or the Celtics.
Speaker 3 (43:49):
What do you what's the first thing you think.
Speaker 4 (43:51):
About think I'll share why it's a trailblazer because my
first year and Rob, I wonder what your thoughts are
on there because when I was you know, i was
born in nineteen sixty eight, so I'm a little kid
in the early seventies and I'm living in Cincinnati, Ohio,
where football and baseball.
Speaker 3 (44:13):
Even though I was in a black neighborhood.
Speaker 4 (44:15):
Football and baseball for us was more We were more
into that than basketball. And the basketball players I really
thought of and were the biggest fans of were the
Harlem Globetrotters. More so now again I'm a little kid,
but more so than the you know, NBA players. At
(44:36):
that time, I was into the Globetrotters. And so the
first year I really got into the NBA was the
first year Doctor J played in the league, and that
was seventy six to seventy seven, and he became my
favorite player and the reason my first recollection.
Speaker 3 (44:54):
Of Walton was that year in the NBA Finals and.
Speaker 4 (44:59):
Doctor taken the league by storm coming from the ABA
and led the seventy six ers to the championship.
Speaker 3 (45:07):
They won the first two games, and I was like
in love with Doctor J.
Speaker 4 (45:12):
You know, I mean everything, And yeah, obviously the high
flying dunks, the fancy play and Bill Walton in the
Blazers came back Rob and.
Speaker 3 (45:24):
Won the next four games and won the series in six,
and I was so.
Speaker 4 (45:31):
Upset, and even to this day, And obviously Doctor J
has a great legacy, but I always think, had he
won that championship, Robb, he won two in ABA, he
won the one in the NBA with Moses Malone. But
had he won that championship in seventy seven, Rob, there's
probably an argument for Doctor J as a top ten
player of all time, and being that I liked him
(45:53):
so much, I always think about that.
Speaker 3 (45:55):
But Rob Walton led that team. They swept Kareem and.
Speaker 4 (45:59):
The Lakers in the playoffs and that was the check
this out because think about this, if he did this today,
think about what the view talk would be. This was
just his third season in the NBA. His first season
he only played thirty five games. Second season played fifty one,
so this was kind of like his first real full
(46:22):
season played sixty five games. Led the Blazers to the
first winning season in the history of the franchise when
in the league their expansion and I think nineteen seventy,
so they had played seven years in the league, had
never had a winning record, had never been to the playoffs.
So this is the first time they ever make the playoffs.
(46:45):
They're the youngest team ever to win a championship at
first time.
Speaker 3 (46:49):
Robbie leads him to the championship.
Speaker 4 (46:50):
We're talking about Minnesota and Anthony Edwards paying their dues, right,
losing before you win.
Speaker 3 (46:57):
He didn't do that. That's how dominant he was.
Speaker 4 (47:00):
And he was the finals MVP, and then, like you said, Rob,
next year he won the MVP, only played fifty eight
games with one MVP, and then Rob four of three
of his next four years, or let me put it
this way, in the next four years of his career,
he only played fourteen games.
Speaker 3 (47:18):
That's unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (47:19):
And three of the years he sat out completely and
then one year he played fourteen games.
Speaker 3 (47:23):
And that's really what derailed his career.
Speaker 1 (47:25):
Was just a foot injury, absolutely, because he was off
to a fantastic start and would have Chris, I agree
with you be considered one of the all time greats.
But it was derailed. And I just wonder for people
out there eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox, what.
Speaker 3 (47:45):
Do you what were your thoughts about him as a broadcast.
Speaker 4 (47:47):
I thought he was a great broad because I was
very disappointed when they took I think it was I
don't know if it was NBC, whatever station was. But
remember Walton and Steve Snapper Jones used to be the
you know, color commentators for.
Speaker 3 (48:04):
NBA game and I thought they were great.
Speaker 8 (48:06):
Now.
Speaker 3 (48:06):
They would joke back and forth and Snapper would, you know, Bill.
Speaker 4 (48:11):
Would say stuff because you know, he was a stutterer
when he was growing up, Rob, and one of the
ways they helped him overcome his stuttering was just say
just say something. Don't don't just think about it first,
just say what comes to your mind. And so he
would say stuff and Snapper Jones would would rib emn, you.
Speaker 3 (48:31):
Know, snap at him and everything.
Speaker 4 (48:32):
But I thought they were a great tandem for the
younger people. Rob, and I think, let me know if
you think this is appropriate. I thought him and Snapper
Jones were a lot like Van Gundy and Mark Jackson
was St Steve.
Speaker 1 (48:48):
Jones, right, and he was Snapper Jones, Yeah, and he
was Chris the Portland He did the port in local
games and then would do NBC for the national yep.
Speaker 4 (48:58):
And I thought they were and I thought it was
a mistake when they took him off, But he Bill
went on and worked college games for ESPN, Rob, and
it was a great broadcast.
Speaker 3 (49:08):
It was a lot of fun, a lot of fun.
Speaker 4 (49:10):
All right, all right, eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox.
You're turned away in What are your thoughts? What do
you remember about Bill Walton?
Speaker 1 (49:19):
Is it like UCLA? Is it about the Celtics? Is
it about him just being a broadcaster for ESPN and NBC.
Speaker 3 (49:28):
Or is it the Portland Trailblazers.
Speaker 1 (49:31):
I mean, if I had to think of him in
one thing for real, for me, it would be Portland
with the beard and everything.
Speaker 3 (49:40):
That's what I think about him and getting dunked on
by Doc. But no, I think of him in Portland
and Rob.
Speaker 4 (49:47):
I'll tell you what I think that I think, clearly
the best college player ever was leu Al Sender or
Kareem Abdul Jabbar, but Walton's on the short list.
