a Dallas Maverick fan, the only one around Yeah in
this area, well in this area, you know you're right
because they all became Laker fans exactly. So before I
really jump into a couple of thoughts, I want to
get into just your initial reaction. And we kind of
knew what was gonna happen, but it finally happened, and

we thought maybe Nico Harrison would go Nico Harrison right
and do something crazy and go up and get Ace
Bailey or something, or just traded way for Yannis or something.

But here we are, Cooper Flax. There your initial thought
as a Math fan.

Man, you know what the crazy part about that for
me is it's a double whammy for me. I'm a
Duke fan too, so I followed him for a while.
So this is somebody I've actually saying, not just hyperbole,
not just not just people's own reactions about this kid.
Like this kid I saw up close and personal, and
I know everything that they're saying about him is true.

And so once you get to you know, not just
only see him in all his glory with Duke, but
actually have some some type of kinship with him on
that journey. The kid is everything. That's everything that he's
advertised to be. And not just from a plan perspective.
I mean, as a number one pick, you should be
able to play, but the intangibles that he brings to

that team right now, through the tumultuous season that they
just had, He's going to be a steadying factor. He's
going to be a guy that works hard and the
results are going to be the results because he works hard.
And so that's why I'm not worried about the hype
or you know, him not meeting the expectations, because the
expectations are the expectations. But the guy is a good
guy and he's gonna do all the things he needs

to do to be the best version of you. You
won't have to worry about him carry failing because he
didn't try, because he didn't work hard, right, because he
just rested on his loyal loyal and just laurels and say,
I'm just I'm good.

Guys get to get league, get money, Guys don't get
played because I'm not getting the shots, so I don't
play quite as hard or well, I'm gonna save it
for certain nights just a TNT night or well now
it's an ESBN NBC night, and you know what I mean.
And he's gonna be night in, night out, and on
the stuff don't see, Yes, the practice, the lifting weights,
to all the other stuff.

You don't have to worry about drama.

So to me, I'm like, all of that aside are
along with elite athleticism, Gonna work on that jump shot,
get even better.

And so to me, all of those things are gonna
add up perfectly well to a great young player who
you can slide in at any given point.

you traded Luca, although that was hard to get past.

It was that you traded him and your whole point was,
I don't know, it could be a catastrophic injury coming.
He didn't take care of his body. But so you
got a guy who's six years older in ad who
is proven to be injured a lot in his career,

And off injured Kyrie.

Yeah, so that was what you didn't pair him with
Michael Bridges, iron Man, who hasn't missed a game in
his NBA career. You paired him with injured Kyrie, and
then what happened Game one with ad and it was
so exciting too, but he.

So this is where I'm apprehensive, is that you gotta
wait all the way to what you can say optimistically
March with Kyrie coming back April.

so that your team is in a good position, you know,

be the case. So now I got an old Klay
Thompson who's off injured, now Kyrie a d with.

A rookie, and I'm like, on paper, I get it.

But that's asking for a lot for all those guys
to hold up and hold up at the same time.

throughout the season, and so if you don't have those things,
nobody's a contender.

all these things add up.

Boston coming into this year, we thought they were prohibited favorite,
right like they are. They were injuries derailed them. It
wasn't a team that beat them, it was injuries.

So that's always the case when you look at the
same and you talk about Nico saying this is a
win now, this is a win in the future as well.
This window with this group is going to be short.
So Cooper, if he gets all that, he needs to
get done in these couple, these first two, I would say,
two years with this unit that they have, and it
doesn't work out the way hypothetically hypothetically it could or couldn't.

They still have a core with Cooper Flag, d live Gafford, PJ.
Washington who will attract other people. And don't forget, they're
also right now going after another point guard that can
be a stop gap until Kyrie gets back. That's a starter,
that should be a start in his lead, that type
of that type of person.

based on the fact that the fan base will come
back from storming the gates, which they were ready to

they're not going to be contenders in this Western Conference.
Never mind Kevin Durant going to Houston, Oklahoma City is
still going to be there. Other teams are trying to
make moves. So this doesn't take the Dallas Mavericks out

the West. But it does inspire hope.

what they're doing. They're trying to tank, but then they
don't even know how a direction with the tanking, and
they don't know what the new coach, new offensive coordinators,
all of that, and now my career is judged on
this organization which has proven to be bad or lost
at best. And I can understand why you would want
to say, I don't want to go play for the Hornets.

I don't want to go play for the Wizards. I
don't want to go play for the Panthers. I don't
want to go play for the Jags.

it go and just let things happen and go where's

If Steph Curry doesn't go to the Warriors and they

them shooting shots that normally you wouldn't shoot the NBA,
and he's okay with I believe he's gonna be the
best two guards ever, you know, as far as a comic.

And my point is, you can't control everything. Sometimes you
go because you can put yourself in a bad situation
trying to dictate everything. And so to me, you got renowned. Man,
we did everything. The goal was to get you to

Let's just see what happens, because I know you're gonna
work hard. I know you're talented. Let's just see what

happens to me. You can't control everything because trying to
hold two tie, you let things slip away. And that
was the word I was going to and you just
said it for me. But it's the control part of it, right,
You control what you can control. You go into the
league and go into any situation that you think you want.
You're not there yet. You haven't experienced those locker rooms.
You don't you haven't experienced those cities, and you don't

even know the guys that you're gonna be teaming up with.

the league that we're not good enough for you to
play with us. And so now you walk into a
situation that can be even more hostile than you think
it is. Right right, every other team, every other GM,
every every every other owner in the league, now when
they see you come in the building, they're coming after you,
like they take it personal format. I'm taking that personal too.

You got a guy that doesn't want to come play
with you, guys, Okay, cool, got it? Bet when we
see you then we'll show you. So you have that
happen as well. But for ace Man, he see he
actually seems like a good kid. When I see him,

they look like brothers. They're all hugging up, and he's

the NFL, the NBA, we know, no tipically get that
because it's one of those leagues where if subconsciously, if
you're like, if I'm that guy, I can change a
team because there's only five guys on the quarter at
a time. NFL, man, it's eleven on one side of
the ball, eleven on the other side.

Baseball is nine. I can't hit and pitch and catching.
You can't do everything basketball. You can be the ones
facilitating shooting, scoring, rebound.

You can do it all.

So it's a little different, And I thought about it
like this. I've said this a million times, and you,
as somebody who was in the league drafted, it must suck,
especially in the NBA where any NFLF your quarterback where
you're probably gonna go to a bad team. And if
you're the quarterback, now I gotta go to the Panthers,
Bryce Young, Yes, nothing here is baron. They don't know

what they're doing. They're trying to tank, but then they
don't even know how a direction with the tanking, and
they don't know what the new coach, new offensive coordinators,
all of that, and now my career is judged on
this organization which has proven to be bad or lost
at best. And I can understand why you would want
to say, I don't want to go play for the Hornets.
Speaker 5 (25:04):
I don't want to go play for the Wizards. I
don't want to go play for the Panthers. I don't
want to go play for the Jags.

I actually get that. I don't want to go play
for the Lions for twenty years, right m h. But
at a certain point, you've controlled your entire career if
you're raised Bailey and a lot of these players in
the NBA. What middle school you're gonna go? What AAU
team you're gonna go to?

What college?

And obviously you had control over before, but now, especially
with legal money, who's paying your boy to most is
you can flat out just say that he used to.

mom needs this, my dad needs a deconde Now what

So you've been controlling everything since you were twelve years old,
and now, to me, this is one of the times
where maybe just maybe releasing the wheel a little bit
can allow for destiny and allow for a great opportunities
that you didn't foresee happening right where you can go
to it. I don't want to go play with the
jazz blah blah blah. Well, Danny h has a great
proven track record. Yeah, and maybe he knows what he's

doing up there, and maybe he's been taking for a reason,
right to get these picks to put him here everybody's
calling and one kessor, No, I'm gonna keep him right now,
everybody's calling him with marketing, not because if I can
get them, and I got some guards. He's got a
couple of guards out of this draft, got Clayton, got
Clayton Junior, who I really was high on.

And my point is sometimes you kind of gotta let
it go and just let things happen and go where's
gonna go? Because so many things in the NBA have
happened where if it was orchestrated in another way, we
wouldn't have had that.

If Steph Curry doesn't go to the Warriors and they
have mante ellis right, I remember it was who I'm
not playing him over Monte. Well, they finally let Monte
go and they get this other guard who was quiet.
We didn't really know much about Steph Curry, and they
have a Mark Jackson who believes in him and has
them shooting shots that normally you wouldn't shoot the NBA,
and he's okay with I believe he's gonna be the
best two guards ever, you know, as far as a comic.
Speaker 5 (27:00):
Oh yeah, and we're like what yeah? And it worked out.
And my point is, you can't control everything. Sometimes you
go because you can put yourself in a bad situation
trying to dictate everything. And so to me, you got renowned. Man,
we did everything. The goal was to get you to
the league. Thank God, you're here with a wonderful opportunity.
Let's just see what happens, because I know you're gonna
work hard. I know you're talented. Let's just see what

happens to me. You can't control everything because trying to
hold two tie, you let things slip away. And that
was the word I was going to and you just
said it for me. But it's the control part of it, right,
You control what you can control. You go into the
league and go into any situation that you think you want.
You're not there yet. You haven't experienced those locker rooms.
You don't you haven't experienced those cities, and you don't

even know the guys that you're gonna be teaming up with.

in his mind I can see him wanting to control
and go where he wanted to go at that point
because the money wasn't gonna be that much difference, right,

go into a new situation alien Natan anybody. And so
you're telling these other teams and these other players around

the league that we're not good enough for you to
play with us. And so now you walk into a
situation that can be even more hostile than you think
it is. Right right, every other team, every other GM,
every every every other owner in the league, now when
they see you come in the building, they're coming after you,
like they take it personal format. I'm taking that personal too.

You got a guy that doesn't want to come play
with you, guys, Okay, cool, got it? Bet when we
see you then we'll show you. So you have that
happen as well. But for ace Man, he see he
actually seems like a good kid. When I see him,
he looks very you know, very welcoming and very warm.
And him and his teammate Dylan Harper, they were, you know,
they look like brothers. They're all hugging up, and he's
excited for Dylan to go where he goes a little

bit more out of that team by the way right.
You don't have to say I get it, but I'm
saying I get a sweet sixteen, I mean the only
one eight conference games, so anyway, but no, I mean
he seems like that guy. So you don't want to
send off the to the media, to the world that
you're someone that's selfish or only care about what matters
for you. And I think that's the part that I'm
worried about for him. The other parts of it, I

pick in the first round, you're like, I wish I

getting buckets for years? Bradley Beal. Guess what no one knew,

I called Kevin Martin. If you look up in the

definition of pointless points, it was Kevin Martin. Kevin Marvin
for like eight years will be top six to seven
in the league in scoring. And some of y'all listen
right now, go Kevin who was a terrible shot, that
weird shot, but he was a bucket get and he
was always on bad teams.
