hour not too far away. May in about twenty minutes
(01:28):
on Celebrity Corner by the actor and producer and singer
and big time basketball fan Leon, and he'll join us
for a good little chunk of time and we'll get
to talk NBA with him. He was a Division one
basketball player at Loyola Marymouth, so he knows the game
(01:49):
of basketball and so he's always a fun guest. So
we're looking forward to having him on. But let me
welcome in my partner, mister Rod Parker, who's been doing
radio all day. What's happening? How you doing all right?
You still got a voice left? Yeah? No, I got
plenty left for the Eye Couple. I always keep enough
I take on this. That's right. If I'm gonna keep
(02:11):
you know, dude, I can't cheat anybody, So you can't
cheat the Eye Couple. No, I know, but I'm saying,
as the day goes on, you might want to like,
you know, but I'm not that kind of guy. I'm
ready to go. Uh did the Dan Patrick Show? Uh
this morning with Jason Smith. That was fun. Then in
(02:33):
Los Angeles, as I do every Friday, I joined Rogan
and Rodney on AM five seventy LA Sports, So I
did that segment. I think rob g had the unfortunate
uh occurrence, you know what is the right word, uh
situation that he driving. Yeah, and he happened to catch
me on Now you know what I was trying to say, right, Yes,
(02:55):
we unfortunate. I was on the Herd with Nick Wright,
who feels for Colin Cowherd, and we basically got into
the same argument that we had with Nick yesterday. So
it was a pretty pretty high spirited discussion with him.
And got some great news Rob about my daughter. You know,
(03:15):
I have two daughters, and Alexis who's about to graduate
from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in psychology.
In congratulations Mazeltough. Yes, thank you. She got a job
as a lab manager at Yale University, so they hired her.
Now that's unbelievable with what's going on. That's awesome. That's awesome.
(03:37):
And she had a few other offers, but she chose
this one and she'll do that for a couple of
years and then go get her PhD in psychology. So
she is making us very proud and we're very very
happy for Alexis. So good day for me all around,
very good day. That is a good day. And on
this Friday, we do well, let's go out with a
(03:59):
bad We got so much stuff to talk about. It
is pretty amazing when you think that them been in
the games. But we appreciate Chris, all the odd couple listeners.
You guys have been awesome calling in interacting with our
stuff on the social media. You know, you guys are
really into it. Despite us not having games since March eleven,
(04:20):
March eleventh, that you know, you guys haven't turned us off.
You've actually turned us on even more, and we appreciate it. Well,
we really appreciate it because obviously a lot of your
listeners come in their car right when they're driving, and
like you say, listenership has gone up. Obviously people aren't,
you know, driving home from work and things like that
(04:41):
for the most part. So it is good that guys
have stuck with us and even new ones have come aboard,
and hopefully you'll stick with the Eye Couple. So rob,
let's get it going. And the first thing we're gonna
address is an NBA topic, the All the Smoke podcast.
That's Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, and you know, both
(05:02):
of those guys are friends of the show. We worked
with Stephen up at FS one, Matts been up there
a few times as well, and obviously Mats done a
good amount of Fox Sports Radio. He's co hosted with
me and filled in for you at times. Does a
great job. Both of them in this podcast is awesome.
They get you know, they get all the players. They
got Kobe, you know, they were one of his last interviews,
(05:24):
if not his very last interview. They Kevin Durant. They've
just gotten all types of great guest and they recently
had Chris Paul And one thing Chris said was that
he appreciated because you know, he and Blake Griffin we
got sound so here it here it is. We were
(05:45):
one of the best teams never to win a championship. Man,
we have so much talon bro you Bled, Darren Collinson,
Jamal Crawford, JJ Reddick, Crime Butler, lamar Odom, Brian Hollins.
And it's it's seriously one of those things you don't
you don't realize what you have until it's gone, you
(06:05):
know what I mean. I mean, I think about it
at times, and then Blake absolutely had our issues here
and there, whatnot, but I actually appreciated it. Blake probably
a lot more after I left. Look, I get what
madd is saying. You heard him run off the names
they had a legitimate big three DeAndre, Jordan, Blake, Griffin,
(06:26):
and Chris Paul. Chris one of the best point guards
ever and Andre or DeAndre and Blake were All Stars
at that time in their careers. Blake certainly a perennial
All Star, and then they had a nice host of
role players and a championship coaching, Doc Rivers. But I
can't give I mean, yeah, if the list way down
the list of great teams that never won the championship,
(06:50):
they would eventually be on there. But I can't give
them a, you know, a high ranking among the teams
to never win a championship. I get where mass coming
from because they had a lot of talent, but on paper,
but Rob, they never got past the second round. That Chris,
(07:11):
Let's just be honest. That team was never anybody's team
to win the championship, even when they had those players.
Were they entertainment. Let me just say this before you go.
I picked them to get to the finals the first
year Doc went and Doc Rivers, I thought, you know,
championship coach, he's gonna bring it all together. I didn't
pick him to win it, but I did pick him
to get there. And obviously they didn't even do that. Yeah,
(07:34):
I just they were never on my radar to win
a championship. They were entertaining. I get all that high
flying lob city, Chris. It was. It was great to watch, right,
But to think that they were on some list, I'm
with you. I just I don't see them on that list.
There's way, way, way, way way more teams that were
(07:55):
that were much better, and not in any order. I
mean that could just jump out at you. The Phoenix
Suns team with Steve Nash and uh Mary startle Meyer
marrying I mean Joe Johnson, a squad Quentin richardson. Ye,
they used to win sixty almost sixty games a year, Chris,
and they never got there. They never even got to
(08:17):
the conference finals, did they. I believe they got they
got to the conference finals. Yeah, yeah, all right one time.
They never they And and it's interesting because you know,
if you rattle off names, I mean, certainly talent wising
on paper, the Clippers could match up with him. But
I'm with you, I would take that Phoenix team over
those Clippers. About Chris Webber's Psycobedo King's team, well, what
(08:42):
I was gonna say is is and I'll get back
to them, because both you and I really liked that
team a lot. I would say a few teams that
come to my mind when you just look on paper
at the talent. Remember Jerry west the logo, Wilt Chamberlain
and Elgin Baylor had like three full seasons together when
(09:06):
they were healthy and never won it. That's an iconic
I mean, my goodness, all three of those guys are iconic,
and they never won a championship. So you gotta look
at them. And then the other team robbed. That comes
to my mind. How about Oklahoma City. We may never
see this again, and I don't think we've ever seen
(09:27):
it before where a team had three eventual MVPs, Kevin Durant,
James Harden, and Russell Westbrook and they never won a championship. Now, obviously,
Harden left early and went to Houston and became this superstar,
but Westbrook and Durant were still there. And even that
(09:48):
team rob I think that was one of the best
teams to never win a championship. Injuries hurt them. One
year Westbrook was hurt and they went out in the
second round of Memphis. Another year Durant was hurt. They
didn't even make the playoffs. Another year, Serge Ibaka was
hurt for two games out of the six against San
Antonio and they lost to them in the conference finals.
(10:09):
But then when they were healthy, they beat I remember
because I picked them to beat the Spurs the last
year that all those guys were together, or at least
Durant in Westbrook. People thought I was crazy. I was
one of the few guys to pick them nationally to
beat the Spurs, and they beat them in six. And
then of course they get to Golden State and they're
(10:29):
up three one rob on the great seventy three win Warriors,
and they blew it. They blew it. So that's a
team that I think is high on that list of
all time greats. But for one year, I'm with you.
That Sacramento team was a tremendous team. Chris Webber, Pages Stoyakovich,
(10:52):
Vlide Deviatch, Mike Bibby. They lost in seven to the
Shot Kobe Lakers, who went on to win the championship.
There's two thousand and two. It was their lasted at
three peat. But remember robbing Game six. You can talk
about that. Yeah, I'm just gonna say the NBA had
its uh had its way. I don't think they wanted
(11:14):
the Sacramento Kings. They wanted the Lakers. So the NBA
has always been famous. I always called it the WM
the UH, you know, the w W What is it
called WWE now, but they used to call it the
w W E NBA because there's always like some things.
Even if you remember, Chris when you were just talking
about the Oklahoma City UH team in that finals against Lebron,
(11:38):
and do you remember Lebron filed Kevin Durant at the
end of the game in Game two, they would have
gone up two old it didn't happen. They didn't give
the call to Durant. They lost that game and then
they lost the next three. I'm just you know what
I mean. I'm just saying justin push off and by yeah,
we've seen it where they don't call it, and there
was another yeah. And then you mentioned last week or
(12:00):
earlier this week, Greg Anthony when he's I was sitting
right there and if you go watch the video, he
literally throve he shoves him down. So I think it
was Anthony Mason who made the inbounds. The past go
straight to Reggie Mills because Greg Anthony was on the
floor and the referee didn't call anything, so Reggie actually
shoved Jordan down. If you remember ninety eight, when the
(12:22):
Pacers took the Bulls to seven in the Eastern Conference
Finals Game four, Reggie hit a three pointer on Jordan
to win the game, and as he was coming around
the screen, he shoved Jordan to get space and caught
the past. I gave him enough space. Jordan recovered to
try to contest. But Reggie say this, so that happens
a lot in the NBA. But another I'm gonna give
(12:44):
you another team, Rob and this if they had stayed healthy,
they could have the course of NBA basketball and even
how we talk about it now could have been changed.
Remember the Twin Towers in Houston, Ralph Sampson and Hakim
Eli Juan. Check this out when they they lost to
the Celtics. Remember that great eight Boston team in nineteen
(13:07):
eighty six. People some people think it's the greatest team,
or certainly one of them. Bill Fitch was the coach
right that. I think it was Casey Jones by that time.
Fitch was I believed the earlier uh in that in
that but I'm not one sure, but that Houston team
led by Eli Juan and Ralph Sampson. They swept, swept
(13:33):
the Showtime Lakers in the conference finals, just demolished them.
And if and then Sampson got hurt and they never
You know, that team was never what it was meant
to be because Sampson never was the same And if
they had stayed healthy, though, maybe the Lakers don't win
those next two championships in eighty seven and eighty eight,
(13:56):
and maybe match just got three instead of five. So
think about that, Think about how that could have changed
the course of basketball history. We're not saying that about
the Clippers, and the Clippers were not buying it. And
you were right, Casey Jones was the coach that year. Yeah, yeah,
But the Clippers didn't have a chance to change the
(14:19):
course of basketball history. So no, we got them. They're
way low on the list of all time great teams
to never win the championship. But what do you guys
think eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven, seven, nine, nine,
six sixty three sixty nine, are the Live City Clippers
the best team to never win the championship? We will
(14:40):
get into that and so much more with our multi
talented guests Leon, he joins us. Next, It's The Couple
of Fox Sports Radio. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard and Rob Parker

welcome to the eye couple. Brother. What's happening? Always always,
always a pleasure. How you guys out, man, would you say,
how you making out? How how family safe and everything? Yeah,
(16:08):
so far, so good man. I hope everything's well with
your families as well. You know, it's a very weird
and odd and unpresentented time right now. Yes, indeed, yes, indeed,
you getting through it. I'm glad you guys. I'm glad
you too, and still have a job. Yeah, we are
to believe me. Sure. And Radio Leon is one of
(16:29):
those things that I think kind of gives people a
sense of normalcy, y'uring a time like this now. Granted
people aren't in their cars as much as they used to,
but our listenership has gone up, which is great because
I think people are seeking that that normalcy. Well, they
also don't have anything else to do right right right
(16:50):
how we feel a void. We're definitely void fillers. So
that worked for us. So we're happy. Yes, you need
to tell make sure they're getting all your mood. He's
up on all these show these channels too, because yeah,
I believe that this is the time for everybody to
watch some movies. But we know you are more than
(17:12):
an actor and a singer and a director. But you
played hoop to now Lord Loyola Marymount right right, that's
one of the places without a doubt, right, and that's
d one. So that's big time. So we know you
got a lot of knowledge about basketball. You and I
go back and forth about it a lot through text
and stuff. Uh, Matt Barnes and he says something on
(17:33):
his All the Smoke podcast with Stephen Jackson just recently
because they had Chris Paulin and it's a great podcast.
But Matt said that those Clippers teams with lib City,
Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordans CP three was one of the
best teams ever never to win a title. Now, they
would be on my list, but way way way down.
(17:57):
It depends on how long the list was. Who do
you think is the best team or at least a
couple of the best teams to never win a championship,
and with the Clippers be that high on your list. Okay,
So first, just to be a little specific when you
say the best teams you mean because you know teams
change from season to seas, right, right, that's a good question.
(18:18):
But but we're talking about like the core group. Like
like you have the core group, there's all gonna be
some changes. But like, like I say, the Sacramento teams, Okay,
I think what you're saying, because the single season team,
best team to never win a championship, that's a lock,
that's the Golden State Warriors. So that wouldn't be even
(18:40):
well okay, but we see, I wasn't even thinking about
them because obviously they did win championship. We mean, right,
what I'm saying, right, I don't want to go there.
We don't want to go each year. Yeah, man, like
the Phoenix Suns. Remember the Phoenix Suns with Steve Nash
and that group, they used to win six games west
(19:01):
Brook or whatever. I was leaning towards the Utah Jazz
teams with Stockton. There you go where we were Meloney
one most valuable player and every year they were perennial
in the West. But and even got the two finals,
but unfortunately was against Mike. You know what, I'm glad
you said that, Rob and I went with Sacramento. I
(19:22):
brought up to Westbrook durant Okac. I brought up Ralph
Sampson and Hakeem Sacramento never got out the West Sacramento. No,
but remember they had the Lakers beat well they had
they lost to the Lakers in seven, and they remember
that Game six. That was Tim Donaghan in two thousand
and two and parade to the foul line. Yeah. I
(19:44):
don't even think that was the league. I think that
was just Donaghee going rogue. He was trying. Yeah, that
was so I was a guy. Yeah, we're talking about
one that we're talking about one of the best ever.
They got at least get to the championship series. No,
was the championship. I'm glad you brought up Utah and
(20:09):
I want to hear you expound on this. When I
kind of I'll explain it, and then I want you
to expound on it because you can't. You often hear
the refrain that Mike Michael Jordans dominated a watered down NBA.
You know, the Celtics and the Lakers of the eighties
and even the Pistons were broken up, and those were
(20:31):
super teams that fell apart, and Jordan never beat them.
And then when he started beating everybody, you generally had
one or two superstars on each team, Max, but that
Utah team had beaten a super team Barkley, Drexler and
Eli Juan to get to the finals, and then the
next year they beat Duncan and David Robinson to get
(20:55):
to the finals. So I want to I just want
you to expound on that era. You agree that it
was watered down and Mike dominated a water down era
or will you defend that era of having great teams
that they definitely had great teams. One thing you have
to realize, you know, I think that all of us
would think that pat Riley, it's somebody to listen to.
(21:19):
And I think he once said, I don't know Exactehite court.
You probably know better than me. He said, it was just,
you know, there were two type of teams. There were
two teams, then the teams they were playing when Michael
was playing, the teams that weren't playing when Michael was playing,
and then several teams, Nicks, everybody else that could have
had championships if Michael wasn't playing. Now, when you play basketball,
(21:42):
there's at some point where there are certain players that
just elevate above the other players. I mean when it's
a big gap, and it happened at certain times with Lebron.
That happened early on even in high school. Michael Jordan
was a little a bit of a lady bloomer. But
what happened with Michael is that his skill eclipse anybody
(22:06):
in the NBA at a certain point, and that's why
he dominated. Yeah. Look, we haven't seen other than Bill Russell,
who didn't really dominate with individual statistics. We've never seen
anybody in the NBA dominated like Jordan. That's why we
Rob and I say he's the goal. No, even when
you know Lebron dominates, he doesn't dominate to the extent
(22:29):
that Jordan did. Everybody just hasn't. Everybody's eating during the
Lebron era. When you talk about championships, when you go
back Leon to the Lebron to the Michael era, you
could count ten Hall of Famers who didn't sniff a
championship during Michael's reign. That's why I think. That's what
I look at is who didn't win. You know, during
(22:49):
during Rachel Mueller didn't win at Michael kept a lot
of great players for winning a chip, Yes, a lot
of great one right, no question, And he takes a
lot of pleasure in that. He won't say it publicly,
but you know he does Oh no, he says this.
He says it to them right right, right right, You're
(23:12):
saying to them. Now, when you talk about great players,
right with really great players, I think the only way
to dispect them is to first start with their weaknesses.
And when you look at Michael at Michael at his peak,
he didn't have any weaknesses. No, no, he could go
(23:34):
right left, he could dunk on you, right left, he
could shoot threes, mid range and posting defense. Yeah, no,
they didn't. There was a there was a poll that
came out ESPN did it a bracket of the greatest
college basketball player ever? And I'm so glad you bought this.
(23:58):
And while christ and I we both are Michael Jordan guys,
when it comes to the greatest of all time, he's
not even in the conversation. I don't think if you
look at the top five of the greatest college players ever,
what did you make of that? And how in the
world could shock beat out Kareem abdul Jabbar slash lu
all Sender as a college player. Okay, So, first off,
(24:23):
I watched the brackets. A good idea terrible execution. The
only before you go only on the only saving grace
for ESPN was that the fans voted, so really, we're
not the fans. You can't you can't do that. But
the omissions were terrible, that's true. And and the fact
(24:45):
that you were putting um women with UM guys that
was a big confusing But there were some guys in
there that should have never been in that pole. Trey Young,
even even Steph Curry come on forgetting to the willing.
But that David Ryan, right, come on right, I mean,
if anybody from Oklahoma, it should have been Wayman Tisdale.
(25:08):
But can I ask you a question with Spencer Hey,
what not on there? I don't think he was on
there any Wait, the guy who would change college basketball
because he was so good that held go hardship? Are
you crazy right now? It was? It was it was listen,
first off, if you're gonna have a college pole, there's
(25:29):
only one winner. Okay, there's lou al Finder. If there
was even a second thought of another winner winner, it's
Bill Walton. It's one and one eight Ryan, Nobody statistics
to get match up to what those guys did. No, no,
you know who else? And I would even put this
guy ahead of Jordan David Thompson at But you know what, though,
(25:56):
to be honest with you, that's the one guy Michael
probably put the hand of himself right because remember he
asked him to introduce him at his Hall of fame. Ye,
that was David Thompson was the man and he beat Walton.
That's why Walton only won two championships instead of three
because David Thompson the NC State upset him. And not
(26:18):
think it was seventy four and were a championship and
his numbers were ridiculous, like twenty six and eight for
his career or something like that. Were joined by the actor, director,
singer producer Leon talking NBA and college hoofs. Leon, let
me ask you this because we were we're gonna go
back a little. We're talking about what we asked you.
(26:39):
One more question. Was ag and Deadly not on that list?
I don't he didn't get far if he was on it, Yeah,
I don't, I don't remember. But walkerguireguire was a great
college player. Now it was it was. It was very
poorly executed, and you're right, we can blame the fans
for the voting, but yeah, the omissions that's on ESPN
(27:02):
and they should have had a separate bracket for women
and a separate bracket for men. But they're trying to
appease They should allow people in the media or whoever
to vote it. Yes, yes, yeah, well they're trying to
appease the millennials. That's why a Trey Young can be
on the list. Do you know what I mean? Like right,
like like there's no way he should be on that list.
It's a sulting to other great players. There should have
(27:26):
been very few, if anyone, and dance it's I mean,
you want if you want to put how are you
one of the best players in college? We've only won
yet you better at least one the ship? Right Anthony
on there? Okay, because he led him to a championship too, right, right,
(27:47):
But and he wouldn't have gone far because obviously he
didn't put up huge numbers. But let me ask you
this Leon, getting back to the NBA Week, Robin, I
talked about this earlier in the week. I want your view.
You mentioned the greatest teams to never win it? About
who is the greatest player individually to never win it? Now,
I said, Carl Malone, rob who did you say, uh?
(28:09):
Chaid Barkley? Okay, who you got Leon. Wow, Wow, put
put put the pressure on me for that. You got Baylor.
Both of those, Both of those are great choices, both those.
I like Barkley, and personally, I just I like Barkley's
(28:31):
game better. I like this personality. But you know, I
just I was a Barkley fan, and I think his
peak may have been higher than Malone's. But Malone obviously
was a bet much better defender and the second time
championships right, second all time score, seventh all time rebounding
his longevity. As much as I want to put Barkley
(28:51):
ahead of him, and I actually have in the past,
I just can't. You can't overlook Malone's accomplishments. And as
you said, getting just getting to the finals out of
the West those two years they did it was a
huge accomplishment. Karmelone, Carmelon was was a better player longer
(29:14):
than Charles Barker right right. His his raid is a
great player was longer than Charles was, Okay, and also
for the longest time he was deep prototype power forward.
I mean, if you said power forward in a dictionary,
you see a picture of Karl Malone right right. So
(29:35):
it's a good choice you know, also, I'm just gonna
throw another person in there, considering his credentials. All right,
Steve Nash, how are you gonna be back to back MVP? See? Look,
Nash is great, Obviously, he was never the best player
(29:56):
in the world, even though he won those MVPs, exactly right.
But I like, so, let me ask you this, because
I don't He's on the list somewhere down there, but
I don't think he's high on that list. Where do
you have him ranked as a point guard all time?
Because I got him in the lower lower end of
(30:16):
the top ten if they're and I know he's the
only one to win two and straight MVPs other than
maybe Magic, But I still I think he was. He
partnered with the perfect culture for him, Mike D'Antoni, and
they both elevated each other to heights they couldn't have
foreseen without each other. But you know, so, you can't
(30:38):
ever knock what someone has become because of it. I
give you that. I give you that. But my thing
is as point guards, Magic's ahead of him, Curry steps
ahead of him, Oscar Isaiah, I like Jason Kidd better
than him. You gotta put stocked in ahead of him.
(30:59):
I mean Chris Paul, Like, you know what I'm saying,
Walt Frazier where this That's what I'm saying is he's
to me, he's You're right, You're right, you know. I mean,
was he better than Gary Payton? I think Payton probably,
especially with the defense. You're probably right. And also Gary
gets Gary gets a not anyway because he wants the
(31:19):
two finals, right, I actually get a seam to the finals.
That's right. Wasn't that focus you know, situation? But it
didn't happen. Yeah, that's that's That's one of the things
that that hurt Nash is that they never got there.
And if you go back and look at that roster
and how good they were, it should have happened, no,
no question, no question. Oh no, Because Mari Sidemye was
(31:42):
a beast, then yeah, that was him. It is in
his prime. Leon Man. Look, we obviously could talk forever
about this. Whenever this lifts, we will get you back
in the studio. You know that. That's right, leon I
got you. I got you Pence in for twenty twenty three,
so we'll have you in the studio, right all right, buddy?
(32:07):
Be safe man, Yeah you too, definitely all right, more

(32:31):
a funky flashback Friday leading you into your weekend. And Rob,
We're gonna go to your wheelhouse and talk a little
bit of baseball. And interesting story by our former colleague
at the old place, Buster Oney, he just brought up,
how remember when Jeff Luno, the GM for the Houston
(32:52):
Astros and aj Hinch We're suspended and then subsequently fired
after the poored in the investigation by Major League Baseball
about the Rockets cheating scandal. Well, their suspension ended or
is scheduled to end after the twenty twenty playoffs, and
(33:15):
the story was saying that even if they don't have
a baseball season, that Hinch and Luno will in twenty
twenty one. They'll be able to, you know, be reinstated
and able to manage and be in somebody's front office
if they get a job, get jobs for the twenty
twenty one season. So obviously, if they play, they'll be suspended,
(33:40):
sit out this season, and then they can come back
the following year. But even if they don't play, they
can come back the following year. Does that sit right
with you? It doesn't make sense. Just off the rip,
if there's no baseball season, continue would say, well, there
will no season. I know this legal ramifications, Chris, because
(34:05):
they're counting this year as service time for the players,
whether they play or not. Do you know what I mean?
So right there, I'm telling you there is the legal
problem you would have because then they could go to
court and say, well, Mookie Betts was one year away
from free agency and now you're granting him free agency.
(34:25):
So what are you saying in effect that he played
last year? So it doesn't make sense. But here's the
other kicker, and probably a bigger than Chris. I don't
believe anybody, any ownership would hire them next year anyway.
I think even if they didn't play, they wouldn't hire
them because there would be some backlash. So they might
(34:47):
get hired down the road. I don't know, but I
doubt that they would. But I doubt that it would
be next year though. Do you know what I'm saying?
Like there would be pushedback from fans if Hinch got
a job after basically sitting out the season that wasn't
what do you think? No, I agree with you on that,
and I agree with I think you made an excellent
point at the beginning when you said that, Yeah, I
(35:09):
mean managers and whoever. You know their representation is going
to fight it on a legal basis. If you're allowing
players to have this as a year of service, then
they will definitely fight it. If you court the law right,
and I think you're right, nobody would hire them, But
(35:31):
it doesn't I and so it end end up sitting
out anyway. But I would like to see the suspension extended.
If they don't play this season, you've got to sit
out a real baseball season. No one and I think Rob,
what this does. This just only extends the feeling among
(35:54):
baseball fans that justice has not been served. And I
know we've talked about it before. It at this point,
whenever baseball comes back, you and I are in agreement
that we think that Houston Astros won't get nearly the
venom and vitriol that they would have gotten had this
been normal circumstances like people will be so holes to
(36:15):
see baseball right. They won't even that will be on
the back burner. It'll just be a celebration that baseball's
back right, and understandably, you got it, understandably. But that said,
I think the reason people were so upset with the Astros,
or one of the reasons, and this is certainly true
for me, is that justice wasn't served. We all want
(36:36):
to see justice served. And that's why I was always
banging the drum for vacate the title, because I think
that would be a punishment for the players. You take
the rings and everything and all the memory or you know,
all the official memory at least of them winning that championship.
So I think this would just in a lot of
people's eyes robbed. This would just be like more of
(36:57):
the same, Like, man, they got away with it, got
away with the Way that things are playing out for
the Astros right now, it looks like they're gonna get
not that note, they won't get booed at all. But
I don't think it'll be as bad as we thought.
That we started this season March twenty I mean March
twenty six, and we had a regular full season. Chris
so ultimately their punishment will not be as bad. What
(37:21):
do you think about I mean, to be honest, the league,
because obviously the league doesn't they don't want all that
bad publicity about you know, a few of their teams
cheating and stuff. I think it would make sense for them.
I don't know why they haven't done it yet. I
know Rob Manfred said they're busy with other stuff, which
is true, obviously trying to figure out when they can play.
(37:42):
Oh yeah, I think it's smart to release the Red Sox,
you know, the punishment now because even though nothing's going on,
and yeah, people will talk about it for a couple
of days, you know, like we said with the astral
it's gonna fade away. I do it now rather than
when they got back. I don't think that they got anyway.
I think they'll wind up doing it, Chris, during this
(38:03):
during this break, and you're right, it'll it'll be done.
You don't want to start this season and then put
another cloud, all right? So I agree, Right, it is
the I couple you're listening to, Chris Brussard and Rob Parker.
We just are getting started. We got two hours left.
Keep it locked right here on Fox Sports Radio, the

this hour. We'll be joined shortly by Calvin Watkins, who's
the Dallas Cowboys beat writer for the Dallas Morning News.
(39:08):
Does a great job and just that's a great guest.
We obviously want to talk to him about Dak. We
want to talk about Cooper. You know, someone known Calvin
Chris from the old newsday days back in New York,
New York Newsday when he was just starting out doing
high schools in New York. So I've known Calvin for
a long time. He is a really good reporter who
(39:29):
was he married to at that time and I'm he
was married to a celebrity, right, we gotta ask him.
Was he married to a female rapper? No, wasn't he married? Well,
I'm pretty sure he's the one. He Maybe it's not him,
we'll after asking him. But Monique Monique was married to
(39:50):
the actress Monique the comedian. Yeah, well he was married
to a sports writer, you know, before she made it big.
And I think it was Calvin. Think I may be
wrong though, all right, but we'll see. We'll ask him,
and then we'll be joined by Jalen Johnson, University of
Utah defensive back and big time draft prospect. He's a
(40:12):
junior now entering the draft and he'll go late first round,
maybe second round, but he's definitely a big time prospect.
So we will be joined by him at the bottom
of the hour. But rob Let's something it's right in
our wheelhouse because it is broadcasting. Rex Ryan, the former
(40:33):
head coach now an analyst, was on ESPN earlier this
morning and he talked about Amari Cooper and crossed the line.
Here's what he said to me, this is the biggest
disappearing act in the National Football League. He doesn't show
up on the road. He doesn't show up against when
the competition's good, When he's against the top corners, that
(40:55):
guy disappears. This is who he is. And Dan, he
doesn't love football with it, he stops his route, does
all this. I wouldn't have paid this turn no way
it hell, what there it is? I mean, look, the
criticism about his game is fine. That's what I was
gonna say, Chris. He's fine all the way up until
len And you know what, if he could have if
(41:16):
he could have just given me some numbers two to
say in the fourth quarter when he says he disappears,
he has uh you know in the fourth quarter in
the last four years, only three touchdowns and you know
what I mean or something to just back that up.
I'm good with that. And we both of us have
done hours and hours and hours of live television, okay,
(41:38):
haven't we. I mean we've done thousands of Yeah, if
not thousands of hours, thousands When you think back, I
mean I stop. Probably we did Cole Pizza in New
York back in two thousand and five, two thousand and six, Chris,
you know I many years ago. That was so so
we both know what it's like to be on live
television to have to voice your opinion, but to call
(42:01):
a guy a churd, I mean I've heard a lot, Chris,
I've never heard that before. No, you have to keep
name calling out of it, and you really don't want
to get personal. Look, we've talked a lot about Antonio
Brown this year, right, and we obviously haven't agreed with
a lot of the things he's done. But you don't
(42:23):
cross the line and call somebody a name like that.
You just can't. And in fairness direct he did apologize shortly,
you know, like a few hours later of course, after
the firestorm. But you can't do that. You don't want
you don't want guys getting personal with you. And you know, Rob, Look,
(42:44):
we know athletes that we've been critical love, and we
have sometimes good relationships with athletes we've been critical love.
And the thing we can always tell him is, look,
it's not personal. I'm critiquing your what you do. If
you do something personal in your personal life that impacts
your game or the team, and we have to talk
(43:06):
about it, that's one thing. But name calling, going at
a guy, you know, lying on a guy, even if
he's playing well and you're ripping him or whatever, because
you don't like him. Stuff like that you have to
stay away from. You know, I'm not gonna hold this
over Rex Ryan's head forever anything like that, but it's
just gotta be letting know he definitely crossed the line today.
(43:28):
You don't need to be calling these guys names, no
doubt about. Now, this is an interesting thing. He apologized,
and all that fine. Okay, ESPN, though, Chris push that
quote out on social media. Why I'm surprised. You know,
we both worked there. You know, it's like being called
to the principal's office. We always talk about when you
(43:49):
work at ESPN, you work for the mouse, you know.
But yes, you know what I mean, right, Yeah, you
know I was only in there once. It didn't go well.
I was bullying. Can you believe that my eight years
only got called in one time? But anyway, my point
that really is man zero at Fox, how's at So
(44:11):
we'll take you right. But but but but I'm just
surprised at ESPN. I wouldn't would you put that on
social media? No? But you know this as well as
anybody robbing. We won't get deep into it, but there
are times, and I've had this situation with myself too.
There are times when ESPN actually thought something was good,
(44:36):
but then the public backlash. Oh okay, you know what
I'm saying. You know, I lived it right, and I've
been in that situation too, and they Now, I'll give
Mike Greenberg credit. He seemed to all pick it up
immediately because right after Rex said the word turd, you
heard Greenberg say something like oh or okay or you know. Now,
(45:00):
Rex kept going for I don't know, twenty more seconds.
He didn't cut him off, but he did make some
type of comment like he he may have thought that
was over the line. But but yeah, so that's that's
We just wanted to let it be known that we think,
you know, Rex crossed the line, and he, whether he
was sincere or not, he apologized for it. Let's bring
in our next guest. As we said, he's a Cowboys
(45:21):
beat writer for the Dallas Morning News, a busy man
right now, even even with the shutdown, our man, Calvin
Watkin is Calvin. What's happening? Brothers, what's going on? And
now we got to settle something first before we think
you would the actress, it's you or somebody else. It's you, right,
(45:45):
it's me. Yeah, That's what I thought. That's what I thought.
So what were you holding her back from being a superstar?
Is that what happened? I must have been holding her back? Yeah?
End about marriage she had she was working at remember
the phone company called MCI. Yes, yes she was. She
(46:08):
was like a customer service at MCI because she was
about to quit her job and then start comedy. And
then then our marriage kind of dissolved maybe two or
three years after that. But was that part of it
that you were like, hey, what what do you you know?
What do you are? You're gonna become a comedian? What
are you talking about? Oh? No, no, the other issues
going on with that? But no, No, was she funny?
(46:31):
Was she always? Like you know what I mean? Like,
could you see it in there? Though? That? Was she
always a funny person? Or so are you not surprised
by that she blew up? Or why are you surprised? Literally?
I never saw this. I never saw this, but I
will say, um, we were we were separated and we
(46:52):
had lunch and so I remember we were driving somewhere
and she told me since she had a dream, she's
gonna have an old TV show. I was like, looked
at her like really, come on and wow. And then
and then obviously she exploded. I do remember when she
(47:13):
won the Golden Globe for Precious She called me and
we're talking and she said, can you believe that they
gave me an award for this for this thing? And
I said, yeah, I've Can you act like that in
real life? Wow? So it was just like a success
story for her. It's just been like, uh, it's incredible,
(47:35):
it's amazing. Guys married, uh legally five years. Okay, I
got married when I was twenty one. So y'all did
y'all know each other in high school? And I, yeah, yeah,
I was. I was working at a radio station in Baltimore.
(47:57):
And because I say she's not from New York, that's
what I trying to figure out. No, she was from
Baltimore and I was going to school and walking on
this radio station in Baltimore, and that's when we met.
She was in sales and I was like doing sports
on the air. I was sports updates. Yeah, she was
in sales, and that's how we met. My last question
(48:18):
about this and then we get into the football quickly
and be honest, as if you've seen her on television
and movies and as you mentioned, the awards was there
every time. Were you like, Man, we should have stayed together. No,
not really, I've never I've never thought that way. Maybe
(48:40):
because I've known her since for long times. I never
looked at it that way. Uh. I was happy with
I think we were both happy with our decisions. We
have a son together. So I remember I had to
do a story to our Lowes had a birthday party
and when playing for the Cowboys, and the birthday party
(49:02):
was in Los Angeles. This was during the season. They
had a game in New York and I told the office, Hey,
I want to cover this birthday party. I think I
could stay. You don't have to worry about the hotel.
And I stayed at Monique's house and the cut costs
because the flight was like at the last minute, right,
So I remember spending the night at a house in
(49:23):
La you know. So we've always been friends, you know,
I mean always. Sometimes those things can be a little dicey,
but good, but we've always been friends. Yeah, well that's good. Man.
Were joined by Calvin Watkins, the Dallas Cowboys be writer
for the Dallas Morning News. All right, let's get in now.
I know how my ex wife feels now right, and
(49:50):
you all right, Robbie's on that path. I don't know
if you know Calvin, he's on his path to becoming
a superstar comedie. And we'll see what happens. Rex Ryan
shook Dallas today, didn't he? Oh yeah he was. He
was totally outlined. Totally outline. Um, Amara Cooper, I've only
known him for like a year and a half and
(50:12):
he's one of the nicest guys. You know, you will
meet each of you have covered beats and you know
Rob baseball, you basketball, Chris, And let me tell you something.
Amari will talk to you whether he's hurt, whether he's healthy,
whether he's struggling, whether he's having a good game. He's
always the same, Um, you know, answer all the tough questions.
(50:35):
He's just a good dude. And now you want to
say he disappeared in the Jets game, that's fine. You
want to say that the lines and the Patriots took
him out, that's fine. Um, if you want to question
his toughness, okay, fine, I can live. That's all legitimate.
But to call him a turd is just it's just
it's just like it's like a personal attack and Calvin
(51:00):
they have history. What is this about? Because it was
so personal. It was like he doesn't like football. I
wouldn't have paid that, dude, I wouldn't. There was something there.
I couldn't figure it out. I don't. I really don't know.
His brother, Rob was a defensive coordinator for the Cowboys
for about a year or two, and but I don't
(51:23):
know what's going on. Maybe um Rex's agent was trying
to represent a Maori. I have no ideatimes. Well, maybe
Rob might have told him some stuff that was coming out,
you know what I mean, like from coaches. I mean,
because it just seemed like I think he was so
confident in it. Yeah, I think some of that's just
(51:43):
Rex's Yeah, I mean he he is that type of overstated,
over the top, you know what I mean. Now, obviously,
I mean the tirdline that's off, that's way out of bounds.
But I think his other criticism is just I took
it as just that's his personality. But let me ask you,
is Calvin dak where are we at? I mean, the
(52:04):
latest reports that I've seen is that he's going to
end up being the highest paid player in the league,
both in terms of guarantee money and or at least
right there with Russell Wilson, if not a little bit
ahead of Russell Wilson. So where do we stand on this, Well,
I would say maybe a week and a half ago,
Cowboys up to offer to Prescott. He's gonna get more
(52:27):
than Carson Wentz's gonna get more than Jared Goff. The
big hold up is the length of the deal. Prescott
wants a four year deal and the Cowboys are offering
a five year deal. I think Prescott is believing, Hey,
I could come back to the table when I'm like
thirty years old, and if I'm doing good, I see
(52:48):
Pat Mahomes and the Shawn Watson because their money is
gonna surpass Prescott. So I think Dak is believing I
can go back to the table again in four years
once the market week set. When Deshaun Watson and h
Top Mahomes get their money, the Cowboys are like, hey,
that's not our problem. This is a deal. It's a
(53:09):
five year deal. You are quarterbacks for the future, and
we want you to take this. And so that's the
biggest hold up right now. Is the money still gonna
be I'm sorry, Rob, if the is the money per
year equal to Russell Wilson do you know? Or is
it a slightly belower or what it should be higher
(53:31):
than Russell Wilson's um The last the last figures I
received was thirty three million on average one hundred and
five million guaranteed. The Cowboys up those offers since the combine.
So he's gonna get more than He's going to be
a highest space player in the history of the game.
(53:51):
That's what we've been told. But apparently how the structure,
how they're gonna structure it is the biggest impast Is
this going to Is this gonna get done or is it?
At some point the Cowboys are gonna say, okay, we've
we've done this. Here's the thing, this guy's not budgeting
franchise tag them and we'll go from there. Well, they've
only put the Francise tag on him and he hasn't
(54:14):
there a li fifteenth to sign it. As Stephen Jones
likes to say, it takes two people to make deals.
So the Cowboys continue to up the offer and Puss
Scotts people continue to say, Nope, that's not enough, Nope,
that's not enough. But I don't think the Cowboys are
gonna quit up such Scott because that's all they have
at that position. So they're gonna keep them. They got
(54:35):
the tag in place to keep them for at least
twenty twenty. They have the option of putting the tag
on them again in twenty twenty one, similar to what
Washington did with Kirk Cousins. So I'm very surprised they
have not reached a deal here. But we have the summer,
so we'll see what happened. Last question, we got about
a minute left. Calvin. If that, let's say it comes
(54:58):
back on the franchise tag, is he going to hold
a gruss because we've seen a lot of commentators say
that will ruin the relationship between him and the organization
and they'll probably end up splitting up at some point.
Do you think that will be the case or did Dak?
Will you know he'll put that beside behind I know
he'll play. He'll be a professional in play. I think
(55:19):
he will. But what you explain that if he comes
back on the franchise tack, I don't think he'll be happy,
but he's gonna come back. I don't think long term
it will affect anything because one thing about the Cowboys,
especially with Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones. They're very family
oriented and they have great relationships with their players. Jerry,
(55:39):
as you guys, knows a player's owner, so they will
work it out in some way. Remember Ezekiel Elliott held
out with two years up in his deal, went to
Carbo and Little Training Camp and him and Jerry kissed,
it made up and they're best friends now. So I
think that's what happened with Dak, and that's why the
Cowboys haven't won anything in twenty five years. As they
(56:00):
run the organization like a mom and pop store. Maybe,
so you not be right, but that's how they do things.
And Jerry Stephen they're gonna run it the way they
see fit. And and you're right, it's been a long
time they you know, had a championship around here and
they live in the past here in Dallas, but this
(56:20):
is how they do things. Uh. People in the organization
hopeful that Dak will reach out to Stephen or Jerry
because other players have done that personally to get deals done,
but Dak won't even call them. Instead, daks Ad and
Todd France is doing all the all the conversations, so
because Jerry and Stephen like that personal relationship. Hey you
want it, you want some money, call me, don't send
(56:43):
your representative, call me. Let's get it done. Childers have
done that. They got a deal done with DeMarcus Lawrence
that way. They got the Zeke deal done that way,
so they figure they're figuring, hey, Dak pick up to
sell hall adders. So we'll see. All right, information, man,
We appreciate it, and be safe out there. Man, take
(57:04):
care of yourself and keep doing the good work. Man.
Proud of you, Calvin, you know that. Proud of you, guys. Yeah,
thank you very much. Take all right, brother peace. Let's
get back to the story of the hour. Was Rex

(58:55):
uh one, I agree with you. And when he started
calling Uh, names like that. That's personal. He wouldn't involved
me beyond but of course you know that's Rex. Ryan.
We're still not excuse he should apologize. I stare about it.
He did. Secondly, Uh, Rob, you out a line again,
Brady versus Belichech And you want to call it the
(59:16):
Eagles game? Where where Belichech? Doing that? Set out Malcolm
Butler and cost him the game? You weren't try to
put it on Brady. Well, we don't have talk Brady.
But Brady fumbled the ball at the end of the game.
All right, That's all I want to know. David Ohio,
you're on the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. Think
(59:37):
it might call Rob. I love you. You're right ninety
nine for some of the time. Thank you, Dave. Come on, Dave,
didn't hear that. Let's go back to that's a Ryan.
The comment he made was taken out of context by
so many people. He was talking about a Laurie Cooper
(59:58):
as a player. It always you don't think that words
before as a player. What about when that was another
player that was personal? You you gonna tell me that
as Chris if you said Rob Parker's comedical skills are
less than great. I've never hired that same word to
(01:00:21):
play at my clip. Is that an attack on him? Personally? Nosionally?
You can word no that that word is not acceptable
on television, David, Just isn't It isn't You could call people,
you could, you could call people a lot of things, Chris,
that is unacceptable. Yeah, it was. You just don't need
(01:00:43):
to be name calling. That's when it gets personal. That's personal.
I mean I agree with the caller David that you know,
like you said, Rob, you said it earlier. Everything was
fine except using that word. Yes, I had no problem
with that's it. That's it. Uh. Felicia in Michigan, you're
on the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. Hey how
(01:01:05):
are you? We are great? How are you? I'm great?
I'm gonna be unpopular here, and uh, first of all,
I want to say Bill, whether it's just my favorite
song about him is Grandma's Hands. That's my favorite. Um,
I'm gonna be unpopular, but I believe Rex Ryan brought
in trash, the trash talking we do on the couch
(01:01:27):
from home and being the comedian and his personality that
he is. Because you know, we have comedian chiefs and
the white house. We also have comedians and everything else.
He's a comedian, of the of the NFL commentator, his
personality and everything else. Yes, I brought I think he
brought a trash talking to the h to the to
(01:01:49):
the as a commentator. And I'm not offended. Um, you know,
because I sit at home and I trash talk and
I call people and I said, Felicia, I'm gonna stop you.
You just said it. You're at home. You're at home,
You're not in front of a camera national television. And
(01:02:12):
the name calling is bad. You remember when I got
into that fight with Rick Berry Chris Yep. We weren't
doing the show together with me and Mark Willard at
the time on the weekends. Do you know why I
went off? Because he called me a loser? And that's
name calling. You could say that you disagree with me
or I'm off. It was about Lebron passing the ball
(01:02:33):
off for the three. You remember that Rick said he
made the right basketball called Rick Berries hall of famer
and a great basketball player. That's his opinion, all right.
But to call me a loser because I disagree with
a play is when I just said that, that's not
where we are. The name calling. I wouldn't call Rick
Berry a loser on the radio. Do you know what
(01:02:53):
I'm saying? Because we disagreed, that's wha we're not saying
Rex Ryan should be fired or he can't be We're not.
It's we can move on, but he has to know
going forward that's crossing the line. And except the right. Yeah,
sitting on your couch, you might say a lot of things.
(01:03:14):
That doesn't mean you're gonna be able to say it
on national television, you know. So that's the situation there.
That's why by Felicia and I'm gonna rip you off
my couch tonight, Felicia. But I love that by Felicia.
That'll do it all right. If your team is looking
for a lockdown corn in the upcoming NFL Draft, they'd
(01:03:34):
be wise to grab Utah's Jalen Johnson. The All PACTIL
performer joins us next, but first, be sure to catch
live editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Brussar then
Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app. We're
coming to you live from the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios.
(01:03:55):
It's the I couple, and it is easy to say
fifteen percent or more on your car insurance with IO.
Go to Geico dot com or call eight hundred nine
four seven Auto. The only hard part is figuring out
which way is easier. He's one of the top defensive
backs in this draft. University of Utah Jalen Johnson, Jalen,
Welcome to the Odd Couple. Yes, sir, appreciate you. Hey man, congratulations.
(01:04:19):
I know this is a great time for you. Let
me ask you this, does it take anything away from
something you've probably been dreaming about most of your life?
The fact that you know they're not going to be
able to have the big event in Las Vegas and
even like just a normal year and you're you're gonna
be at home, I guess with your family. Does it
take anything away from me from it that the draft
(01:04:42):
is gonna be different this year? Oh yeah, definitely. Just
I mean as a kid watching it on TV and
just always wanting to visualize yourself in that position, wearing
a nice suit, just looking good and join himself and
join the event, going up there, shaking, shaking the hand
and doing all that, taking all the pictures and just
the media and just the explosure that the draft normally
(01:05:05):
gives you. It's something that you just look forward to,
just being with your family and just being able to
experience that live. I mean, it's just something that I
wish I could experience, but I mean due to the circumstances,
that's just about adapting and just making it work. So
I mean, just now just spending time with my immediate
family and just enjoying it in a small group. And
(01:05:25):
it's going that way we'll just have to do for now.
But I mean, definitely I'm going to try to have
a bigger celebration once all this quarantine and staying inside
stuff kind of goes away. Just still try to bring
my friends and family, just really enjoy it and just
celebrate with my whole support system. How do you prepare
yourself for? Like where are you going to be drafted?
(01:05:45):
Like you read, one day you're here, next day they
drop you in the second round, next day you don't
see your name. The next day you're in the fourth round.
Like when you start to see stuff like that, or
just the notion that it's not guarantee no matter what
people are saying to you, are you prepared either way?
If it's really good news, or just if you're drafted
(01:06:08):
at all, or do you not think about it? I mean,
of course I think about it. I wouldn't lie said
I don't think about um the selection and where I
may go or anything like that to pick us around.
But I mean, honestly, I just been telling myself to
stay true to what God has for me, because I mean,
He's not gonna put me in any situation that I'm
not ready for us. I mean, whatever wherever I go,
(01:06:31):
whatever around it is, whatever pick it is. I mean
it was something that Um, God felt like I should
be in that situation and be um and have that pick.
So I mean, honestly, I'm just trying to stay grounded
and just trust and believe in God's planning for me. Jalen,
for those that you know, maybe haven't seen you played
at the University of Utah, is there a defensive back
(01:06:52):
in the league in the NFL that you look at
that you know, if people wondering, well, who's he, who's Jalen?
Similar to who's he? Kind of lie? Is there somebody
you would kind of compare yourself to the way you play? Honestly, No,
I wouldn't say my game stock because I mean I
try to get um little tricks and trades from um
(01:07:13):
all of the best corners, all the top guys and UM.
So I mean I wouldn't say necessarily that, like I
don't have a player comparison for myself. UM, I just
have I mean different things that you may see in
different corners, UM, I may show, But I mean I
don't think I have a true player comparison in the league.
How about from the standpoint of your favorite player growing up,
(01:07:37):
growing up, favorite player, favorite corner, favorite player, just favorite
sports player. Uh oh, that's tough. That's tough. The answer
is none. I mean, if you have to think about it,
there was no player Like no, I'm just saying a
(01:07:57):
lot of players. I don't say I'm top of my head.
I would just say ray Lewis all the top of
my head. Okay, Okay Lewis. Now you Jalen h you are.
We're a great student. Three point six gpa in business.
So congratulations on that. That's awesome. Do you have plans
(01:08:18):
like not not just after your football career, but even
during your career. You see nowadays you're seeing more and
more athletes. Obviously Lebron James maybe the greatest example, who
are doing becoming moguls and doing business and all this
stuff during their playing career. Are there thoughts that you
have about stuff like that, whether it's during or after
(01:08:39):
your career? Um? Yeah, most definitely. But um, I want
to make a correction. I don't want to have any
false information. But I graduated with the strategic communication degree.
I initially start off in business and not making the switch.
Um okay, I mean communications. Yeah, what is that? I said?
Just a broad spectrum of communication in terms of business
(01:08:59):
can munication, broadcasting, journalism, just a more wide variety of
all of all communications but one jobs. No, I don't
want your jobs like that, not yet right, No, no, no,
but honestly no, still going into the business world of it,
(01:09:20):
because I mean, um, you hear communication. They were talking
and broadcasting, but I learned that there was more to
it than just that, and learning how businesses attack customers
and consumers and how they and why they do what
they do in terms of prices, in terms of putting
things out and when to put it out, where to
put it out, who to sell it to, how to
sell it, just different stuff like that. So I mean
(01:09:42):
it was it my eyes up. From from a business
standpoint of Okay, I understand how people are thinking, how
people buy, why people buy, what makes them buy certain things.
It just gave me more of a hunch. I want
to get into the business world and should be able
to have my own product, to be be able to
just have a better understanding. I'm in the business world
(01:10:03):
as well. That's great. How did you How did you
get to Utah? You're from California right for Usno, and
it seems like more and more California kids are, you know,
not coming to USC or UCLA and you know heading
to Utah and different schools. How'd you get there? Honestly,
I would say first or formanth I would say opportunity, um,
(01:10:27):
coming of course USC UCLA they get guys every year, um,
and have older guys there. I'm so for me, just
about being able to play and showcase what I can
do from from my freshman year. From the start, just
being able to have an opportunity to be able to play.
And then second I was in my I trusted my
coaches um from the jump and I had no problem
(01:10:49):
with them when the day we met until the day
I left and said my goodbye. So, I mean they
were always straightforward. They always shot me straight and we're
real with me, and I just felt more comfortable with
them because I mean I would considering USC, I was
considering Oklahoma, but just the coaches and just my position
coach Reef Shaw, just being able to trust him and
(01:11:09):
build a bond with him was just something that was
big for me. So, I mean, it was just more
of where I was comfortable playing at Jay the last
thing we got about a minute left. You're obviously more
than just a football player. What are some of your hobbies,
some of the things you're interested in off the field. Honest,
I don't really have too many hobbies. I mean, I
just I mean I just watched movies sometimes, just spending
(01:11:32):
good quality time. Um, but my interests. I recently started
getting into reading more books and just trying to expand
my mind and areas like that. Right now, I'm reading
the Tony Dundee Book of Uncommon Life. I'm reading The
Success Commandment. I forget the guy's name. I think it's
making good husband. Oh yeah, yeah, we had him, Robbie
(01:11:53):
was in studio exactly. Yeah, So I'm reading I'm reading
his books right now just trying to expand my mind
for this next level, on next step that I'm gonna take,
and just always kind of keeping the right mindset and
always seeking the right things. You swung it, You swung
and miss guy, You swung and miss on your favorite player.
I just want your favorite movie, blurted out, your favorite
(01:12:15):
all time movie, bad Boys too? All right, there you go.
Did you see three? What do you think of three?
What do you think of it? He didn't like it.
I actually thought it was pretty good. I liked it.
It was just different than when I thought it like.
Going into it, I thought it was going to be, Um,
I'm probably gonna be different. It wasn't. It was it
(01:12:37):
was too old for you. They played on the age thing.
Were they too old? No, I won't even say that.
I wouldn't even say the acting. I would just feel
like it was a different movie than one and two
was all right, all right, because I didn't expect but love.
But I thought it was pretty good. But man, you
sound like a great guy. And luck with the draft,
(01:12:59):
and we'll be watching you and talking about your next year,
that's for sure, Yes, sir, Thank you, appreciate you guys. Time,
Stay safe, all right man too. Piece. Something happened today
that has a sports world buzzing. It's just not for
me and Rob. We'll tell you about it next. It's
the Eye couple of Fox Sports Radio. Fox Sports Radio
has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch
(01:13:20):
all of our shows at foxsports Radio dot com and
within the iHeart Radio app. Search f SR to listen live.
Classic Bill Withers, May he rest in peace and in power,
died today at the age of eighty one. All right, Rob,
today tonight, it's actually on right now, the NBA two
(01:13:42):
K Tournament. Sixteen NBA players playing NBA two K. I
actually I wasn't watching it. I actually had the Villanova
Georgetown game on from nineteen eighty five, remember that when
Villanova upset him in the championship. That was on. But
now I got this NBA two K tournament or it's
DeAndre Ayton and Zach Levine. I gotta be honest, I
(01:14:08):
couldn't care less. But that's just me. What are your thoughts?
I never missed the what is it called NBA two
K NBA two K Tournament? I never watch it, so
I never miss it. Come on, I just can't. I
mean Seriously, I get that people love video games, but
don't you want to play? I can't. What enjoyment would
(01:14:31):
you get Chris watching somebody else play. Well, I'll tell
you what. Right now, I get there. So the way
they have it, they got the game, you know what's
being shown on the screen, the actual video game, and
then they'll have the two players in the corners, which
is cool. Okay, so you know people are in today,
Oh they're NBA players, But don't go to a big
(01:14:55):
shot of each player because they're just sitting there literally
like Twitter in their thumbs, I mean the joystick, but
it looks like they're just twiddling their tongues. Just keep
it on the game. You can have the players in
the little corners if you want. But I mean, I'm
not you know, I'm just not in the video games
like this. Let's bring in Alex DJ. Alex Tisher is gamer. Yeah,
(01:15:18):
so are you into this? Alex? I mean, what will
you have a better opinion on this than we do?
So basically I'm all for it. I think it's a
nice refreshing way to keep people active, especially bringing the
youth into something like this, because I am a actually
I stream a lot myself. I've done a lot of
streaming and I watch a lot of streaming, So they're
actually falling the same premise of what it's built around,
(01:15:38):
which is giving you the inside look of your favorite
athletes playing a game you love to play. And you
were saying like you're not a big fan of watching
them play because you would rather have other people play.
It's a it's an understandable concept, but more so than not,
it's like why we watch professional athletes play because we
can't play at that level. So these kids are never
going to be able to watch their favorite athletes play
(01:15:59):
this game again, and especially play against each other. So
it's cool because you can see them a day in
their life at home playing a video game, being a
normal dude like yourself or dude, and you're playing a
game that you love as well as they do. When
you can see their competitive things, that's cool. I think
it's fine. Like I said, I want them to have
the players little little screen of the players in the corners.
(01:16:20):
I'm just saying, when they go and all you see
is the players sitting down, Yeah, that's like a streaming
thing to see that. It's what they do now, because
like when you watch. There's no excitement in that. It's
sell sadly, it's it sounds really it's it's I kid
you not Chris like with the joystick in his hand. Yeah, man,
that I can't. I can't believe Alex that. Where do
(01:16:40):
we people? How long is this thing go for? Now? Well? No,
like Rob, I kid you guys not if you ever
go to Twitch, but I'm sure you won't. But there's
people that stream for eight to ten hours a day
and people sit there and watch them stream the entire time.
It turns into like a TV show for these kids.
They love to watch these people. So this is probably
getting a lot of viewers, is what you're Oh, no doubt,
especially the younger crowd. I'm sure they're all watching it,
(01:17:01):
but most of them have a joint and some cheetos.
In the other hand, you'd be surprised. Rob's like ten,
twelve and thirteen year olds are probably loving this too,
and hopefully they're not cheetos and joints. I'm not into it,
but I'm fine with it. I have no problem. I
think it's a good idea. I've no got problem with
the you know, ESPN doing this. I think it's it's creative.
It's interesting too to see the NBA players play with
(01:17:24):
the different team, you know, like Zach lv I don't
know whose team is who. DeAndre Ayton has Houston, so
he's got James Hard you know. So it's interesting to
see them play with the other NBA players, you know,
using their team. So it's fine. I mean, it's not
something I'm into, but you know, I don't have a
problem with it, Rob, No, I just I'm just not interested.
(01:17:47):
That's all I have for other people. Knock yourself out.
I got other things to do. Really, now, you got
absolutely just nothing. I just can't tell you what it is,
but I have other things to do. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Brussard
and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four pm
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. It
(01:18:11):
is The Eye Couple. I'm Chris, He's Rob. We're coming
to you live from the Geico Fox Sports Radio Studios.

your car insurance. Visit Geico dot com for a free

Rob is that Rob Parker fs one on both Twitter
and Instagram. I am at Chris Underscore Brusard on Twitter
(01:18:34):
and the Graham will be joined at the bottom of
this hour. I'm just gonna say it this way by
a sports radio legend. That's right, a sports radio legend,
and then we talk. No, we gotta get you know what.
That's a good idea though on the show. Let me
(01:18:57):
tell you something. How any times, as Colin on on
a podcast recently, did you hear this Chris? He was
asked to his show, I don't listen to the podcast
because I'm I'm not saying his podcast right. No, he
was on somebody else's podcast and they asked him what
does he listen to and what does he listen to?
(01:19:20):
You know what? He said? The odd couple really, yes,
he it was on a podcast, he said. They asked
him what do you listen to when you're in the car,
and he that was I believe Rob G are you there,
I'm here, I'm here? Oh am I right? Wasn't somebody
(01:19:40):
asked about what he was doing but rubber exercise yea.
And for those that don't know, super producer Rob G.
In between U breaks, he does rubber band what do
they call Alex rubber Band? No, but you do. That's
why that studio just sweaty and there. Yeah, I'm trying
(01:20:02):
to be crazy. You haven't been in studio in four
and a half months. Is it my fault we're shut down? Well,
I know what I'm doing. I'm trying to I'm trying
to put out a press release for the Odd Couple,
are you Yes, But I'm just giving you props, all right,
knowing that you are like an athlete at heart, Rob,
(01:20:22):
I'm just trying to get it right about what Colin
said about us, that's all I'm right. I didn't hear that,
but I have heard him say some very positive things
about this show. Yes, I have heard that. But he
did say something like they were asking him on a podcast,
what do you what do you listen to? And he
said The Odd Couple. He said he really enjoyed our show.
It was faun informative, it was different, and I thought
that was really nice. So that's what I was. And
(01:20:44):
that's a big shout out doorsmitment. Yes, Colin, Yeah, he
obviously is the franchise and the kid right now radio.
I think Colin is the best best person in sports
talk radio. I do too. He show us the best
like he's he is great. We used to both be on.
(01:21:07):
I used to be on with him all the time
at the old network and it's great to see him rise.
But yeah, I think he's the best guy in sports
talk radio. So that's a great endorsement. Speaking of endorsements,
Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson ever this great podcast All
the Smoke and they get you know, their relationships. They
(01:21:28):
played with some of these guys, they played against them.
They have great friendships with a lot of the players,
so they're able to get all the guys on their podcasts.
And they recently had Chris Paul and here's this is
a little back and forth with Matt Barnes and Chris Paul,
both of whom played on some of those very good
I'm not gonna say great, but some of those really
highly touted Clippers teams Libs City. Here they go. We
(01:21:53):
were one of the best teams never to win a championship. Man,
we have so much talent. Bro. You bled Darren Collinson,
Jamal Crawford, JJ Reddick, Crime Butler Lamar owed him, Ryan
Hollins and it's crazy, it's seriously, one of those things
you don't you don't realize what you have until it's gone,
(01:22:13):
you know what I mean. I mean, I think about
it at times and men Blake absolutely had our issues
here and there whatnot. But I actually appreciated Blake probably
a lot more after I left. It's interesting, first of all,
that Matt Barnes didn't mention Blake, Griffin and DeAndre Jordan.
They were the two seconds, but the second and I
(01:22:36):
guess it was earlier in the podcast he had already
mentioned them. Okay, that's why in that cut you didn't
hear Otherwise You're right, it would it wouldn't make sense, right.
But but I'm gonna tell you this, and I get
the players only and hats off to them, Chris and
bringing on guests, but this is where I think, you know,
ex athletes go off the rails and there's nobody to
(01:22:56):
to pull back a little bit or question them. So
you maybe Stephen Jackson should have jumped in and be like,
hold on, y'all come wrong, got to the conference that
That's what I'm saying, but but that that normally doesn't happen.
That's like, at least my criticism of Lebron's barbershop show
is that everybody agrees with Lebron. I know you were
gonna find no I knew either you're gonna find a
(01:23:19):
way to criticize either Lebron or Tom Brady. This absolutely
nothing to do I'm Lebron James. No, I'm just talking
about you got some players out there podcast now you
gotta know, you no what I'm talking about. That that
how players only uh tnt UM used to have the
players early, but the players only nights. When they what
(01:23:43):
you called, they canceled. Everybody would be like the broadcasters, players,
the sideline reporting everyone. You know they got rid of
that this year, right, Yes, yeah, And I'm just saying
not that they don't have the knowledge, Chris. They do,
they played, they know. But there's also a degree of
because you're you know, buddy, buddy, and because you know
(01:24:06):
each other about the pushback about some of the contexts,
and you're right. It would have been great if Stephen
Jackson would have said, what come on, Matt, you guys
didn't you know what I mean? That's all. It makes
for a better conversation, it would look It's all I'm saying.
I think it's like this as long as you know
what it is. It's great that Matt Barnes and Stephen
(01:24:28):
Jackson can get KD more power to be great and
the other guys and hold on rock and get them
in a way that you rarely see them at publicly
or even or with reporters. You know, you get them.
They're comfortable, they're opened up, they're not trying to, you know,
(01:24:51):
say everything the right way. They're just being themselves. I
think that's great and I like the shop. You're right,
in a typical barber shop, there's always pushback, debate, and differences.
Before you can go into the hood, the blackest neighborhood
in America and say something uh negative about Donald Trump
(01:25:14):
and most people would agree with you. But if somebody
in the body in there that's like, hold up, Trump's
my man, or something like that, I voted for Trump
right right, there will be that. So I'm totally with
you there, Rob. All I'm saying is this serves a purpose,
But you can't have this by itself. You also need
(01:25:37):
the objective reporters who are going to be there and
hold their feet to the fire. They aren't just they're
yucking it up and you're gonna endorse everything right, just right,
Like I didn't and I didn't hear the whole podcast, Rob,
but I'm hoping Matt said or Steven said, So, you
know you mentioned you and Blake y'all had y'all issue?
(01:25:59):
What word they what was the problem? You know what
I mean? That's that's the stuff. That's the stuff. Did
they get to it? Robbed you? They did? Know? What
they did say is that because they're doing everything via Skotte.
Once you're this is over, we'll get you in studio
and we'll really get deeper into all of this stuff.
That's what they say. And they do a great job.
I like, I love their their podcast, and I think
it has this place. I'm just saying, real journalism also
(01:26:24):
has this place where you're gonna ask the hard questions
and that may even make guys uncomfortable at times. And
like you said, a real journalist would have been like,
hold on, how y'all gonna be? How big is that
list where you like the twenty first, the best team
never to win it away? You never got to the
conference finals, right, But there's no and that's all we're
(01:26:47):
talking about. There's a place for all kinds of platforms, Chris,
different ways of looking at it, that's all. This is
the one thing that I always say, though, and I'll
stand by it that when you talk about like the
team websites that you know on like like the traffic
isn't great and because people don't feel like they're getting
(01:27:08):
the whole story, and that's that's I think that that's fair.
Do you know what I mean, Chris, Like, you're just
not gonna get the whole story on the team's website
that you're gonna get writers going to get propaganda, yes,
because the writers are paid by the ownership. You're not
gonna if the coach is terrible or players terrible, you're
(01:27:28):
not gonna read about it on there. You just rob
you notice. And in fairness, that is one of the
i'll say problems with some cable news. Yes, that they
tend to you know, by which network you're going to,
what type of propaganda it's across your boards, across the
right right or right wing propaganda, um and and so
(01:27:52):
the nightly news on the networks ABCNBCCBS is not appears
to me to be far more objective ranted anyway as
much commentary. But it it's different times, it's different things,
Like you know, a lot of the debate shows now
it's not your objective, but you know, Skip's got his team,
(01:28:14):
Shannon's got his teams. You you know, you got guys
you're you're you tend to you know like or or
you know, tend tend to go against same with me.
So it's but we're in these roles. We're more uh
analysts and you know, opinionist than just objective reporters. So
(01:28:34):
there's different roles. But what I want to get to
is this rob he said that they were one of
the best teams never to win it. Both you and
I would be like, yeah, that list better be pretty
long before you get the Clippers on there. It would
have to be like Antonio Brown's rap sheet, you know,
it'd have to be on that paper. I'm sorry, I
(01:28:56):
when when I think of that team best teams never
to win it, a few come to my mind. Oklahoma
City with three future MVPs. Think of that in Oklahoma
City is a great franchise, but you had three future MVPs.
You add Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden and
(01:29:20):
you have no hardware to show for it. None now
I know Harden left as a young pump and went
to Houston and became this superstar. But still you had
Russ and KD. Injuries hurt them. One year, obviously they
got to the finals. They lost to Lebron and Wade
and Bosh, you know, a superteam in and of itself.
(01:29:42):
And then Westbrook gets hurt. They get beat by Memphis
in the second round. Durant gets hurt. They don't even
make the playoffs. Ser Jibaka gets hurt for a few
games of the series with the Spurs, so they lose
to the Spurs. And then they finally when it looked
like it might I'm together, they beat the Spurs. They're healthy,
(01:30:03):
and then they get up three one on the seventy
three win Golden State Warriors, and they blew it. They
blew it. And then when you're up three with not
to take anything away from the Warriors, it's a great
comeback with the Calves in the next series. Yeah, when
you're up three one and you lose, you you blew it.
(01:30:24):
You agree? I agree with that because you only have
to win one game. Yes, and uh, if I remember correctly,
it was in game seven two and okay, see I mean,
I mean, no, that would have been in Golden States
state because so they won. Uh, they had three chances
to win one game after being up three one and
that didn't happen. It was the other way around. I
(01:30:45):
was thinking about the finals. The Warriors lost to ut right,
but I'm saying that at home in game seven, right right?
But but but yeah, that that was a choke job,
and that was one day they won't live down. They
adam where they wanted to and they couldn't close it out.
But that team, I always said, I always wonder what
would have happened if that call that they got that
(01:31:07):
call in the finals against Lebron in Game two, would
that have changed anything? I mean maybe Lebron and them
still would have won four in a row. But after
that game they were out of it, and that that
finals was over after Durant was filed at the end
of the game but got no whistle. So yeah, there's
a lot of teams we could talk about. It's hard
for me to think of the Clippers on that list.
(01:31:29):
I just can't put them on the list. There's way
more teams there. Yeah, where you mentioned earlier, the Phoenix
Suns of Steve Nash and Mark stoddamyer Sean. Don't look
at their regular seasons, Chris right, they used to win
fifty five sixty games every year. Here's something I'm gonna
throw at you. Because two of the teams that come
to my mind, Robe lost to the shot Kobe Lakers,
(01:31:52):
the Portland Trailblazers. They used to call him the Jailblazers
because the major talent these news were getting in trouble
left and right off the off the court. But Rashid Willis,
Steve Smith, Scottie Pippen, and they were up fifteen on
the Shot Kobe Lakers going into the fourth quarter and
(01:32:13):
blew it and lost and shot and Kobe win their
first championship. And then Sacramento is, uh, you know, is
up on the Lakers at half in Game six, They're
up three two and Tim Donaghee was reffing, and it
was it was just ridiculous, the foul cause the Lakers
were getting. They win Game six, shoot a ton of
(01:32:35):
free throws, and then they win Game seven by six points.
But those are two teams robbed. They will, you know, Sacramento,
Chris whoever, they were a great team. I think that
might be the best team to never win it. Um
you think about this the shot Kobe Lakers, who three
pedd interviewed, I think rightfully. So it's one of the
(01:32:58):
best teams ever. Two of their championships, they came within
a whisker of not even getting out of the West.
Think about that. You know, what if Portland wins that game?
What if you know, Sacramento wins that series and they
(01:33:19):
were close, and that it happened Lebron in twenty thirteen,
a whisker from losing that series because Ray Allen hits
the great shot. It happens all the time. But it's
an interesting thing that I often think about. All right, quick,
you just said the nickname the jail Blazers, which was great.
But also do you remember Dale Ellis with Seattle, remember
(01:33:41):
his problems he had and Peter Bessie, the longtime NBA
columnists for the New York Post He also worked at
USA Today. He gave the nickname jail Ellis because he
was all right, right, all right, we want to hear
from you eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox eight
seven sixty three sixty nine. Are the Live City Clippers
(01:34:05):
one of the best teams to never win a championship.
And who else is on your list? I assume who's
ahead of the Clippers on your list. You're turned away
and we'll continue the conversation with you next. I Couple

com they make it easy, all right. Eight seven seven
ninety nine on foxes get to the calls, Rob, All right,
let's to it. Let's kick it off with Harry and Ohio,
you're on the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. What
you got Harry? Hey, how's it going? Um? So, I
(01:35:08):
guess my thing would be I don't think they would
be the greatest team never to win. I obviously would
say you have to go with the Malone Stockton Jazz,
just because I mean he's got five ninety six ninety seven,
you know what I mean. You have the miss free
throws against uh, the sign Nicks. You had, same team,
the miss free throws against the Bulls. I mean when
(01:35:29):
Michael Jordan, I believed it was in ninety seven, Michael
Jordan missed the game winner, then got the rebound and
then end up kicking it out to Steve Kerr. The
same thing in a game seven of the game six
of ninety eight, Doctor hits the three to go up
by three. Then they have a chance to go up
more and Jordan comes around in strips. Uh you know,
(01:35:54):
same people forget about that too. Yeah. I think that's
just the big shot. But the defensive play too. Yeah,
no doubt that's a good call that that you talked, Yeah,
you Tad. It's hard to argue because of the two
star players Hall of famers on it and how much
they were in the middle and who they beat Robbed
get there, Rob and Duncan Barkley, Malone or Drexler, And
(01:36:19):
that was a great LaJuan right right. Who else do
we have? Gerald and Nashville. You're on the odd couple
of Fox Sports Radio. What's up? Gerald? Man? We're going
on guys. First of all, Man, I want to thank
y'all for just taking my car. Thank y'all for what
y'all do. Look, I'm a former NFL player from Atlanta. Man.
I listened to y'all. I'm in my car. Man, y'all
right now, my wife saying like, come on there, I said, Noah, Man,
(01:36:44):
I gotta listen to my show. Man. I appreciate that
real quick. I got two things. One from what you
guys talking about last week about Lebron and Jordan as
far as the career. But I'm gonna say the Atlanta
the Atlanta Hawks. Man, I'm Atlanta fan. I remember my
mom taking me down to wait, wait, hold on, hold on,
(01:37:06):
hold on, huh the Atlanta Hawks. But Dominique, that's love.
Are you from Atlanta? You said you from That's love?
I give you credit for being a loyal fan. What
in the world? What Rob? What Hawks team? They never
got back? Tell me? Yeah, what team are you talking about?
Which one, Joe? I'm talking about only when Dominique Wilkins
(01:37:27):
was there. I can't talk after that, but I'm just
saying Dominique was a dog. And that goes back to
the second thing I want to tell you, guys, Jordan
had to play against superstars on every single team every
single night. Can't nobody, you can't just credit Dominique for
what he did was bad. I know you're saying you're
(01:37:49):
talking about that Hawks team. I can't remember the year,
but they lost in seven to Bird and the Celtics
when Bird and Nique had that shootout. Was it like
eighties seven or something make something like that. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
So I give that was a good team, best ever
to never win it. No, but and d that we
(01:38:09):
appreciate the support. Man this car listening to us in Thanks,
that's right. And Chris and Orlando, you're on the odd
couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up? Chris? Hey, how
y'all doing. I just met y'all for having me on
the show. I just want to say the Orlando Magic
from the nineteen ninety five era, that team was, in
(01:38:31):
my opinion, one of the greatest teams to never win it,
considering the fact of how dominant Shack was and how
they were dominating in the in the in the playoffs
until you know, again, Jordan and st only look. The
only problem and they were I mean that Penny hardaway
before the injury was that was Sack. Obviously was was shock.
(01:38:56):
Scott was a great shooter. Nick and they was a
great team. Here's the only problem. They got swept. They
got swept. That's if if they had battled were lost
in six or seven. I might give you some of that.
But they weren't ready. They weren't ready for prime time, right,
(01:39:16):
they weren't ready yet. Always talk Rob if they if
Nick Anderson hits those free throws and they went, might
have changed it might have changed a lot because they
controlled most of that game. Yep, they should have won
that game. Now, Nick Anderson was never the same, No, Russell,
Russell and Georgia, you're on the odd couple of Fox
Sports Radio. All right, If if we're going by single
(01:39:37):
year team to never win it, I think we got
to go to two thousand four LA Lakers who had
Kobe Check, what Gary Peyton and Karl Malone? If single
year team hauld ever win it. Obviously Kobe and Check wren'
but Gary Payton and Karl Malone were chasing a ring
before Carl Malone got injured. He was lights out that
entire season. He had like twenty two or twenty seven points,
(01:39:58):
and they were into the only team to win an
NBA title the Pistons to not have a single player
of their five man roster. None of those players on
that five man Pistons roster were on the second or
first NBA team, the only team to the NBA Merger
an NBA ABA merger to win a title without a
single All Star All Star player. Basically, if we're going
(01:40:21):
by single here onything, I'll say that's not a bad
Cold and Robin. Their core was still Kobe Shack, so
they obviously won championships. But I just want to address
it quickly. Malone wasn't the same. Malone was forty and
so don't think of a Carl Malone who was leading
them to the finals against the Bulls. He averaged thirteen
(01:40:44):
points that year. He still was a very good player. Obviously,
his average is gonna drop playing with Shack and Kobe.
Gary Payton was older too, so they weren't calling Gary Payton.
Four of them were at the end their prime, and
they weren't calling Gary Payton a glove back then he
was demitten by the time he got to the Lakers.
Not bad, Rob, not bad, not bad. All right, it's
(01:41:07):
more I Couple coming your way. But first be sure
to catch live editions of The Odd Couple with Chris
Brussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
We have a sports radio legend about to join us.
He will be starting The Tony Bruno Show with Harry May's.
(01:41:29):
It will debut Monday, April six, that's obviously next week
or Serious XM two eleven the Dan Patrick Radio. Let's
welcome in Tony Bruno law radio personality, Tony, Welcome to
the Eye Couple. What up our couple on a Friday night?
I mean, are you guys up there on so paula Adventure?
Are you in the studios? Are you doing it from
(01:41:51):
home like everybody else? Now we're at home home, you know, yes,
we can't do it together. Unfortunately all that stuff has changed,
as you know now when you can. You know, I've
been doing I've been doing my show in my house,
in my basement for over a year, so I was
way ahead of the curve on this one. Man. I've
built the studio down here and I didn't have to
do anything. No, no, it's great living when when you
(01:42:11):
when you start Monday, you guys, will you do it
from your home? Right? Yeah, I have a I built
the studio and I moved back to Philly after I
left LA after eleven years out there working at Fox
and doing my thing, and then moved back home to
the same street I grew up on. So you know,
they say you can't go home again, Yes you can.
You can go home again. So I'm down here and
here my mom was ninety five years old and doing
(01:42:34):
the show down and we call it. We don't call
basement anymore. Basement's old school, you know, with the crappy
paneling and nasty tile and maybe a dark board on
the wall, you know, beer cooler decorator. Now that now
you have a seller. Seller used to be nasty. Now
seller is cool and basement and nasty. Right, So are
you are you? Um? Are you? How are you handling
(01:42:55):
your mom? Like? Are you trying to stay away from it,
you know during this time? Or oh yeah, well yeah, yeah,
my mom is with my sister now because my older
sister's taking care of her. So they've been together now
for a while. And so I don't go over to
my mom's and I don't go out anyway. So, you know,
but when you're when you're when somebody's ninety five, she's
almost ninety six, actually, thank God and God bless her.
(01:43:17):
You got to be careful so she doesn't leave the house.
And I haven't know. I I got a new grandson
that I haven't even been able to see because my
older son had had a baby. My son and son
in law, my daughter in law had a baby in January,
and I haven't been able to go down there to Annapolis,
Maryland and even see him. So that's my only godchild
or grandchild, and so I do I do FaceTime with
(01:43:37):
him so I can at least I can do FaceTime
and see the baby in the stroller when they go
outside and take them for a walk on their farm
down there. That's all right, Tony. How you've been doing
this for a long time? Um? How much has sports
radio talk radio changed from when you first started to
where we are now? It seems changing me because it
(01:44:00):
keeps getting bigger and bigger. I mean, there's so many
different formats now. I mean it's still sports radio, there's
different variations of it. Podcasts are huge, you know, I
haven't been doing terrestrial radio now for about four years,
so I started doing podcasts, and then I got on
Twitch a year ago. So I'm doing my show in
the Basement and the Seller. I'm so used to same
basement in the Seller for a year on Twitch right,
(01:44:22):
and then during the football season, I was going out
and doing some pregame shows and you know, going out
to different locations and hanging with the people. But it's
definitely changed, but it has I don't know if it's
changed for the worst or the better. There's so much
content available and people like you know, you guys have
been around rob You've been around were most of us
have worked at ESPN or five. Pretty much everybody's worked
(01:44:43):
with the same people at one point or another in
their career. So those of us who've been around a while,
we know a lot of people. We've worked with a
lot of different people in a lot of different places.
But the younger people coming up, you know, they're making
a mark in the business, and that's what I always
look for, look for the up and comers. It's nice
to see people who've been around a long time still
do and their thing. So I think there's a place
for everybody as long as there's an audience that enjoys
(01:45:04):
what you do and you can have fun. And that's
what I've always done. I've always had fun doing this.
You know, it's sports, Yeah, it's it's a playground. And now,
you know, we've got a situation where the whole world
is worried about what's going to happen next. And so
even though there's not a lot of sports to talk
about it, you guys are finding out there's always that
angle of people care more than just about sports. And yes,
we're getting ready for hopefully the NBA to come back
(01:45:26):
and finish the season, hockey baseball to start, the football draft.
That stuff will always be keeping the track of. But
it's all the other things, the things that people do,
you know, the rare moments where they don't have sports
in their life because a lot of people who have
sports but they also like doing other things. And no,
by the way, they can't even do that right now
except sit at home and watch TV or listen to
the radio. Tony you you guys, I mean it's great.
(01:45:48):
I mentioned your show debuting on Monday, which is unique
in the time like this, that you guys are actually
starting a radio show. Talk about as you mentioned, you've
been doing this for years, talk about how in times
like this, I think back to nine to eleven. I mean,
we've seen nothing like this, but that's the closest thing
I can think of right now. You know, radio gives
(01:46:10):
people a sense of normalcy, and really like our ratings
have gone up during this time, you know, of the shutdown.
Talk about what radio kind of brings to people during
times like this. Well, make a good point because on
nine to eleven, I was in the Fox studios. There
s Polan and Venture in Los Angeles up there in
Sherman Oaks, and andrews cciliano and I at the time,
(01:46:33):
we're doing the morning show, and we were watching all
the TV monitors up there and we were doing a
show talking NBA. We're talking about Michael Jordan. I remember
it vividly, and then all of a sudden, we saw
the monitors up there with the World Trade Tower the
first plane going in and people thought it was just
an airplane. So we were looking at it, but nobody
had any idea what it was, and then eventually the
news started coming in, and then we saw the second
(01:46:55):
plane going to the tower, so we automatically pivoted from
a sports talk mode into news talk mode, and we
immediately went in and started bringing in people from Fox
News and Larry King, who was in Los Angeles. We
had him come on because he had friends who were
coming out to Los Angeles. And at that time, we
didn't know, you know, if the plane was going to
come and hit Los Angeles. We didn't know about how
(01:47:16):
many planes were out there, what was going to happen.
We saw New York get hit, and then we saw
the Pentagon get hit, and so Andrew and I stayed
on the air for like seven straight hours because we
didn't want to leave the airways because people were still listening,
and we became the purveyors of news. Now, obviously a
lot of other stations switched over to news, but we
decided that we needed to stay there because this was
(01:47:37):
the biggest story in our lifetimes. And now we're in
another part of that where everybody's involved. Because back then,
if you guys remember, we were wondering, after a couple
of days, when we'll sports get back, when will people
get back to normal when when we feel safe about
going to sporting events and not being attacked by terrorists.
And it didn't take that long before people finally started saying,
(01:47:57):
we need sports, we need to get away from where
about this every single day. This thing's been going on
for months and who knows how much longer it's going
to go on. But if you mentioned, I joked around
the other day when when they announced that I was
going to be on the Dan Patrick channel at Serious
XM that I'm the only guy who gets a job
in sports when there is no sports to talk about,
and so that's a really unusual thing. But also, you know,
(01:48:19):
Steve Collin and the folks at Fox and the people
with all the places I've work know that doing this,
you have to have versatility to do this. And everybody
can talk about sports. Everybody can talk about a specialty
that they do, whether it's a particular sport or whether
it's all sports. But to be able to be there
for audiences who want to hear what you have to say,
who want to talk about sports related stuff, the NFL,
the NBA, when it's going to come back, what are
(01:48:41):
you looking forward to and all the things that we're
getting into now when there aren't actual games to talk
about now, like the NBA two case stuff. I love
that stuff, but are you going to Are you watching
this make believe basketball guys? I mean, that's one of
those things a lot of people are talking about right now.
Do you play it? No? I was in the Madden
Game for a couple of years back, and No. Five
or six and No. Seven, and so I love video games,
(01:49:04):
but I don't know about watching it on many That's
what I said, Hey, Tony, last thing we got less
than a minute. Obviously, the news of the day was
Rex Ryan, you know, national television and calling Amari Cooper
a turd on the air. Obviously you've done thousands of
(01:49:26):
hours live on the radio or whatever. And Chris and
I I think he was fine criticizing all the way
up to that, but there is a line. What did
you think of him using that to describe Amari Cooper? Yeah,
I don't know where I got from a surprise for
a guy who's been around as long as he has,
a guy who's coaching the league as an assistant as
(01:49:47):
a head coach, I don't get that at all. I mean,
maybe he's under stress. I don't know what stress he's under,
but that's that's just done. Mean, you know, ESPN doesn't
like that guy and stuff, so I don't know what
kind of trouble he's going to get into. That's unacceptable, man,
that's just way over the line. Yeah, no doubt about us.
And to see if anything happens going forward. But uh,
Tony great and we appreciate it. Yeah, congratulations on the
(01:50:11):
new show. And uh, we'll get you on again. You
know what, We'll get you on the hot seat. That'll
be great. That's where two against one me and Chris
against you on three topics, So we'll have you on
the hot seats for the guests. But uh, you know,
it's still a lot of fun. Hey, Robert, Chris, thanks
for tapping me on. Man, appreciate a good talking to
(01:50:32):
you guys YouTube. Man, All right, shop talk it is next.
It's the Eye Couple Chris and Rob Fox Talk. Fox

Rob wrapping up another week and uh, Hopefully you all
have a great weekend. And we know everybody's gonna be
in their houses. But if you're with family, you know,
enjoy your family. Even if you're about yourself, you know,
make the most of it. Yeah, yeah, I mean, I'll
just things to do. Rob you've cleaned, nothing else to clean,
(01:51:16):
it's ridiculous. Well, uh, you know, come up, hey this,
I'm gonna give you something to do. Come up with
your stand up. You've been saying this for a year
and a half. You're gonna do this stand up now.
It's the perfect timing. Yeah, but by the time I'll
be able to perform in front of a crowd, it'll
be three years from We just don't know. Don't put
(01:51:38):
that joke on. Yeah no, but you know, I mean, hey,
do it. You can do it on the show. I'll
be down with that. We can give you a segment. Yeah,
I think I want to do it in front of
an audience. We could tape it. I think that would
be funnier. And then that Alice could bring his uh
could bring uh Craig uh, Craig Melviney to get Craig Melvin,
(01:52:06):
you need to get Craig Melvin on the show. Yeah,
you need to Rob you can you call them? Do that? Rob?
Let's get let's your boy? Okay did him on the show.
But anyway, it's time for shop talk. Nobody ain't little
been a bomb shop? You know that. Ain't nobody you
will talking about whoever, whatever, whatever, you won't do it
about shop talk. Yes, sir, this shop talk to a
(01:52:29):
couple of Fox Sports Drain. We do this every single
day on the show. Now, normally we discussed something that
was trending outside of the world of sports, but today
I couldn't find anything good. So I just wanted something
I saw on Instagram. Some little badass kid got smacked
by his mom produced them stupid because on quarantine, and
you know kids zacked up nowadays. So it got me thinking.
Here's a question for you guys. Tell us a story
about the one time that you got the most in
(01:52:52):
trouble with your parents, and here's a follow up, looking
back on it, did you think you deserved it? Chris,
We'll start with you. I be honest. The worst things
I did they never really found out until I was
older and I told him And so so here's until
the police came and put you in the head because well,
this was a trip. Like Okay, So I'm a sophomore
in high school. Me and a few of my friends.
(01:53:13):
We go up to I was living in Iowa at
the time, and we drove up to Ames, Iowa to
Iowa State to watch of college football game. I don't
know how to drive. I'm like a sophomore. I've taken
a few lessons or my mom taught me a few things,
but I really know how to drive. So we drive,
go to the game, watch the game, get back in
(01:53:34):
Des Moines and I'm I'm begging my boy, yo, let
me drives his car, his dad's car. I'm like, yo,
let me drive the car. Man, let me drive, let
me drive. And I'm like badgering him. So he lets
me drive it. So I drive it and I not far.
I just my first turn, something locked up. I don't
know what happened, but the powers theory locked up. So
(01:53:56):
I run into a store and I jack up his
dad's car. So he is, you know, he's like, we're
trying to figure out what we're gonna do. So he's like, look,
I'm gonna tell my dad that I did it. Now
part of it. First of all, I was like grateful
because I would have got crushed. But part of it
(01:54:18):
was also that he didn't want his dad to know
he let me drive the car. Right. If I'm gonna
just dad, I'd be mad at him, right right. So
he was looking out for himself and for me, and
my parents were friends with his parents, so they never
found it. He told his parents. I remember my parents
came home like, did you hear what Brian did? He
(01:54:39):
wrecked his car? You know what happened to y'all? And
I was like, yeah, I said to myself, I said,
I'm gonna tell them this one day when I'm like
thirty something years old, We're sitting by the Christmas tree
over the holidays, and I'm gonna share it with him then.
And sure enough, that's what I did. I was like
an adult by the time I told them what happened,
and obviously I way out of the punishment rain. So, yeah, man,
(01:55:01):
that's what happened to me. I'll give you mine as
quick as lee as I can. My friend keV was
over the house and parents weren't home, and my cousin
was there and they were horsing around and I don't know,
he touched her and she pushed him. keV was a
big guy, played football at Howard. But this is when
we were kids. He was a big guy, and keV
(01:55:22):
fell through the dining room table and broke it. He
fell through the table, no, no wood, but it didn't
fracture like the pieces, but it came apart. So I'm like,
oh my god, how in the world we're gonna, you know,
figure this out. So somehow, some way we get some
tools whatever, some gloory and you don't know how many
(01:55:45):
times at big family dinners, Easters, Thanksgiving and all that,
I was praying that the Thanksgiving Day dinner didn't come
crashing down because we had put the table back together
and they never never broke. Nobody ever, never found out. Nope. Wow. Wow,
Well that's a good way to end it. Uh. I
(01:56:05):
guess we both hit it. Hit our treacherous actions. Hey,
that's being a teenager. Hey, everybody have a great rikon Rob,
have a great ricin Rob g dj ty shirt. Steve
