Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Welcome man, everybody, Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports Saturday Er Torris,
Jason Martin. We are broadcasting live from the Fox Sports
Radio studios. I am back from a quick getaway, although
I'm actually out next week. That's another conversation. Nothing bad,
but as we do every single time, j mart When
(00:25):
I am out, how was life? I think Arnie Spanier
was in. I'm actually in with Arnie tomorrow. But how
did how did it go with Arnie Spanner yesterday?
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Man? You know what I actually just thought it was?
It was It was a pretty fun three hours. I
don't really have that much to go back on and say, like,
I don't really remember having too many giant disagreements last
week with Arnie on the on the Arnie scale, this
one was uneventful. Like this, if like one end is
(00:58):
Dennis Rodman, sure, and the other end is like, I
don't know, Joe Dumars. If we're just looking at the pistons,
this was much close to the Dumars side than the
Rodman side. There have been the times when the crazy
hair has been there and putting on a dress and
all that kind of stuff, but this one was rather
tame and a pretty easy three hours with Arnie.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
I was going to say, it's uh, Chicago bulls Dennis
Robin versus Dennis Robin. Yeah, I got you, Okay, all right,
Well I'm actually in with Arnie tomorrow. So he was
already barraging me with texts throughout the day.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Yeah, and don't big along does it?
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Man?
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Like two three days before, he's already sending you like
multiple notebook like legal pad pages with all these topics
and stuff that's like all over the place, which, look,
it's better than the opposite. It's better than someone not
communicating with you at all and leaving it completely blank.
Like you're never going to be like berefed of topics
(01:55):
when you're with Arnie because he is consistently communicating and
appreciate that. That's That's definitely an old school mentality, I
think in a lot of ways to like just sit
there and like everything that comes to your mind. You
end up sending it, but it does send you like
fifteen links, and then you have to go and be
like is this credible? No, just find this on the
dark webs somewhere.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
I've gotten plenty of those. Yeah, we'll get into a
story that hypothetically might be one of those in a
little bit. By the way, you obviously filled in for
four hours last night for Chris Plank, so I hope
it went well for those who listened last night into
the morning. I'm sure we're gonna cover a lot of
the same ground. But let's get into let's get into
busy week in sports, and frankly, let's get into in
(02:39):
my opinion, I guess it's the I mean, it has
to be the biggest story. NBA Finals finished last Sunday.
We'll do kind of our reset of how things ended
with Indian Okase here and probably about an hour from now,
let's talk NBA Draft. To the surprise of absolutely no one,
Cooper Flag went number one overall. Don't think that's a shock,
(03:00):
you know, since the moment this draft kind of took shape,
we knew he was going number one. Once the lottery happened,
we knew he was going to Dallas. But with it,
you know, first of all, any any thoughts on Cooper Flag,
et cetera. But with it, and I don't know if
this is just the culture that we live in all that,
but it has now immediately defaulted into well, I mean,
(03:21):
is Dallas are they a contender in the West next year? Anyway,
we're gonna we got three hours skin into all of it,
but your take Cooper Flag going number one. But then,
of course the discourse that has since followed.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Yeah, I mean, certainly he was going to go number one.
We already knew that whoever won the lottery was winning
the rights to draft Cooper Flag, and there have been
some years like that. This is probably you would you
would probably agree with this. I imagine this is the like
most obvious no brainer in the most hype prospects since Zion.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
He at least, yeah, he's absolutely the most hyped prospect.
I think what kind of made it even more boring,
to be honest with, is that it was very obvious,
very early on that san Antonio was going Dylan Harper
number two. And I'm not gonna bore people with too
much of this, but I don't even think Dylan Harper
is that good. And then once you get past him,
(04:14):
it's like, okay, VJ Edgecom you're hoping is gonna be,
you know, your fourth best guy on a Philly team.
So it was a pretty, to me, just relatively uninteresting
draft we're gonna get into some of it throughout the night,
and basically you know some of the coverage of it,
but in terms of the players and even the personality
of Cooper Flag, there's just not a lot of meat
(04:36):
on this bon So I didn't mean to go along
on that answer, but yes, I would say that that, Yes,
pretty much everything is as you exactly as you said.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
Yeah, So, I mean the two guys that went and
was Zion and John Moran, And I do think a
lot of people saw a bigtime seeing and Joab Moran.
To your point, I don't think Harper is being viewed
in that way, but maybe he fits perfectly in the
San Antonio system and so uh he'll end up actually
hitting what his seiling is as opposed to be in
a bad organization. But Flag going one, I mean, it's
(05:04):
exactly what you would want if you're Dallas. It's gonna
put them, it's gonna make them a different kind of
basketball team. Because I just you can correct me if
I'm wrong, because obviously you're a lot closer in the
basketball scene, especially as guys are going from high school
into college and covering that world than I am. You're
closer to it Cooper. Flag's not Luca. He's not gonna
go out there and give you forty. I don't think.
(05:25):
I don't think that's the kind of player he is.
He's more well rounded than that. He's gonna play on
both sides of the ball. He's gonna play hard, he
does most things well. But I don't think he's gonna
be Kevin Durant when it comes to scoring the basketball.
He's just a different player as such that might be
better for your team overall than somebody that's more limited
or more one note, But tell me if I'm wrong
(05:48):
on that. Do you think he's going to be a
prolific scorer. I think he's gonna be efficient, but I
don't think that's gonna be kind of the main crux
of his game.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yeah. No, So I agree hundred percent, and I'll be
quick so I can get back to you on this.
But no, he and I think that's what makes him
kind of a unique prospect. Is I think when you
think no doubt about it, number one was the number
one player coming into the year, led Duke to a
Final Four, Like you immediately default to, well, he must
average twenty three a game and just be this offensive juggernaut,
(06:18):
you know, almost like maybe like Apollo ban Caro was
two or three years ago whatever, and that's not really
Cooper Flag. I mean, he had games where he got thirty,
he had games where he got forty. But he is
a player that is. First of all, he's very good defensive.
He's a very good wing defender. You know, he's a
good help side defender. Things like that. He makes others better.
(06:39):
I mean, the guy averaged like five and a half
assists as a as a six nine ford On On
Duke this past year. So what makes him so good
is that he really is a complete prospect. I'll be
quick and I'll get it right back to you. But
I was on with Colin kylehar earlier this week and
he asked me, he said, so what does Cooper Flagg
have to work on? And admittedly I wasn't ready for
(07:00):
that question, right, But I don't think there's like a
ton of weaknesses. It's not like, oh he can't shoot,
or oh he doesn't defend, or oh he only does
this one thing insanely well. He does. It's almost like
a five tool baseball player that does everything very well.
But to your point, J Martin I'll toss it back
(07:20):
to you if Dallas was drafting him, and I don't
think they were just needing him to come in to
score thirty points a game. And I think that's actually
really quick. I think that's actually why Dallas is such
a great fit. And we can kind of transition into
that if you want, is that he isn't a guy
that's gonna come in and just get you thirty and
that's not what they need. And so I think it's
actually a best case scenario for both parties.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Yeah, would you say Mike Trout is fair, Yeah, some
way in terms of like Mike Trout. I don't know
that Mike Trout has like a go to thing, but
he's not bad at any one thing. I heard one
critique this week at Cooper Flagg that said he needs
to go to move. I don't know if he does
or not. I mean, we'll see. Maybe that's going to
develop for him, but I think that he's just going
to be able to help them in a myriad of
(08:03):
different ways. But past that, I was so just irritated
this week by the way Cooper Flag was talked about
and it wasn't even about him individually. I cannot believe that.
We immediately jumped to people in our industry jumped to
(08:23):
the Dallas Mavericks are going to compete for the Western
Conference this year this coming season. Because of this, I'm
thinking to myself, what are we doing? Like, what exactly
are you setting up Cooper Flag to do? Because the
beauty of this, if you're someone that wants to trade
in this kind of thing, is that if it goes wrong,
you automatically have this, well did we overrate Cooper Flag?
(08:47):
And then you have that take that you can then
do and grift for a couple of weeks. And I
mentioned last night when I was filling in for Chris
that grift is a term that is used like a
club and a lot of times that you used in
a bad way, Like a lot of people say it's
a grift just because it's something they disagree with. So clearly,
if it's not my take, then it has to be
(09:08):
some kind of phony AstroTurf deal. What I mean by
grift is there is a content farm here where you
can get take after take, day after day of coverage
saying the exact same thing, and then you can then
grift the opposite if it goes the wrong way and
nobody's going to be held to account for what they say.
It is ridiculous to start saying that the MAVs should
(09:31):
compete for the Western Conference this coming year. I also
read this week that Anthony Edwards is not going to
be good enough this coming year to get the t
Wolves to the finals. So you're telling me that the
t Wolves have been in the conference finals now for
the last couple of seasons, that that team with Anthony Edwards,
who we were told was Michael Jordan a season ago,
is not good enough to get that done. But Cooper
(09:51):
Flag and the MAVs are going to get to the
Western Conference finals. I hate it for him because I
just think there's nowhere for him to go but down
from there because he goes how many dudes Aaron in
the history of this league have gone to the conference
finals in year one? And I understand that usually a
team like Dallas doesn't win the lottery. We can do
(10:12):
that exactly where it is. But Kyrie's not gonna be
back until twenty twenty six because of his injury, first
of all, and we'll see, hopefully there's no setbacks, and
he seems like he's gonna be ready and whatever else,
but like it's gonna be around the All Star break.
And then you got Anthony Davis, who, well, he got
hurt his first night in the MAVs uniform and he's
gotten hurt a lot during his career now, and you've
(10:33):
got solid role players around him. Saw the guys that
you like around him. I like the makeup of that team.
I like Jason Kid coaching that team. I like a
lot about it. But like flag, the West is loaded.
There's talent all through this league. We just got done
talking about apparently in the media, the Oklahoma City was
going to win the next ten championships and it was
going to be a dynasty, and then that shifted immediately
(10:55):
after the finals, and now the MAVs are going to
be competing for the West. I just don't know why
we have to go to the extremes instead of just saying, man,
you know what, the future could be bright for Dallas
because this kid offers a lot to them. It's going
to be interesting to see what they're able to do
in the short term, but clearly they have the building
blocks for a solid future. But that doesn't get you
two hundred thousand views on YouTube. That doesn't get you
(11:18):
all the clicks and all that, So instead you have
to say something absolutely insane, so that then if it
goes wrong, you can even admit it. You can say,
you know what I got. I believed in Cooper Flag
a little bit too much. Turns out he was just
the next typed guy. He was the Trevor Lawrence of
the NBA or whatever it's going to be like that,
(11:39):
and I just think that's I think that's wrong to do.
I don't think that it's intellectually honest. I think that
those that are doing it know exactly what they're doing
when they go down that road. And I just think, like,
he hasn't played a second of NBA basketball. It took
durant time. It took Lebron time to get anywhere with
(11:59):
the team he was on. Sure, this roster is a
little bit ahead of schedule, but there's a lot of
things that can make this thing go south. And so
I just I did not like that discourse at all
because it seemed so over the top, way too soon.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Yeah, I don't know if there's a difference. I mean,
I guess there is between like TV and radio, because
it's like on a show like this, we just have
a conversation, Okay, Cooper fly goes number one? What are expectations?
And I don't know if because there's a graphical element involved,
like there has to be the bold thing on the topic,
bar or what. But it is like, no matter what
(12:32):
the topic is, it can't just be let's break down
game one. It's gotta be generational mismatch. It's gonna be this.
You know, I I saw one and I know you're
a thunder fan, but it was like, going into game seven,
Shay's either gonna prove he's the best player in the
world or not. And it was like I just saw
Jokic score like I think you had like fifty two
(12:55):
and eighteen in a loss, Like no disrespect, I don't
think this is gonna prove Like, by the way, congrats
Shay one Finals MVP, regular MVP in an NBA Championship.
I don't think he cares if you're calling him the
best player in the world. So I don't know if
it's just people are unable to contextualize things without having
(13:15):
to have the stakes that they do. But I am
with you, though, is I thought I thought we all
kind of understood like, hey, something a little sketchy happened here,
but it worked out really well and the Mavericks are
going to be interesting going forward. But I also kind
of thought that we acknowledged a wait a second, at
the same time, a guy by the name of Kyrie
(13:36):
Irving is not going to be available next year, right,
And like, you know, to me, it's like it completely
invalidates any conversation about the MAVs where it's like you
and like sometimes guys can say stuff and you could disagree,
but you can kind of be like, well, you know,
the this is like, no, the whole conversation still centers
around if you don't have Kyrie Irving, none of it maddens.
(14:00):
And so I don't know, man, I'm with you in that.
I did see some of that coming out of the
day Wednesday into Thursday, and I was like, really, we
went straight from like they didn't make the playoffs and
Kyrie's not coming back to if they don't make the
playoffs next year, they're gonna be earth. If they don't
compete for the Western Conference championship next year, they're gonna
(14:22):
be a failure. So it's very weird, I will say,
big picture. I'm excited about the MAVs. And by the way,
I do understand, Hey, Kyrie's thirty plus at this point,
Anthony Davis is thirty plus at this point. You have
a small window, but I don't know that that window
includes next year, where again Kyrie Irving is not going
to be available for the vast majority of it, if
(14:43):
any of it at all.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
So I'm gonna make one other point. I finished the
show last night with this. I saw that Cooper Flagg
actually called it a blessing that he's going into a
situation where he's not the number one option, where you
know he's gonna be able to learn from Kyrie, learn
from Anthony Davis, learn from these veterans. Said exactly what
you would want somebody to say. Everything that you hear
(15:05):
about Cooper Flag. He seems like he's totally legit when
it comes to just being a guy who understands and
appreciates and is kind of humble and always has been,
and all this kind of stuff. So that's all really positive.
He said that. Here's why I actually made a point
to talk about it. You think the media are going
to cover him that way? Because I don't he can
say that you know, it's this blessing to be in here,
(15:26):
and I'm looking at who's covering it and who's writing
about him saying this, and I'm like, I don't buy
for a minute that they are not going to act
like he's the guy, even if you know Kyrie is
the one that's scoring more points, or Anthony Davis is,
you know, playing his defense or whatever, Cooper Flag is
coming along. But like, let's say Cooper Flag ends the
(15:46):
year with I don't even know what's fair eighteen and
eight or so, I don't know whatever right he's having.
He's filling up statutes in different categories, but nothing like
totally stands out. I still think he's gonna get dogged
out for not being the alpha. There's gonna be somebody
else that has less talent on their team that's showing
out like an alpha, and that's gonna be the knock.
(16:09):
Like look at Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels last year
and think about how Jaden Daniels was talked about after
the fact. It was because of the way it was
approached first to where he was able to kind of ascend. Here,
you're giving Cooper Flag the flowers first so that you
can then take them away later on. You don't have
to give the dude the entire bouquet. You can just
(16:29):
give him a dozen roses and say he's going to
be a good basketball player. Can't wait to see what
he brings. Because him saying it's a blessing, I know
exactly what he means and it's the right thing to say.
But there is no way the media is going to
treat it as if he's not the number one option
because of his name and because there's too much invested
in that name for their content.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Well, i'll tell you what. The media coverage already took
a twist on Friday following the NBA Draft, and I
think the media coverage of Cooper Flags not only what
is expected of him, but why it is expected of him.
It's gonna be a fascinating talking point over the next
twelve months, let alone the totality of his career. So
(17:10):
we're gonna come back some very interesting comments about Cooper
Flag and what he needs to be or what he
might be. That's next. Er Torris Jason Martin, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
Hi, this is Jay. I'm the producer of the Paula
and Tony Fusco Show. Usually in these promos they ask
you to listen to the show. I'm here to ask

two absolute morons who have the dumbest takes on sports imaginable.
Don't listen to the show so it can get camps

Welcome back everybody, Fox Sports Radio eron Torus. Jason Martin
broadcasting live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios, j Mark.
Do you know the uh the song that this beat
goes to? Nope, Sexy can I by Ray J? This
was the only song of note that I remember from
ray J. Then his career, uh no one, which one
(18:25):
wish when I don't remember that on Mary Macko.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
I mean he's known for his eer buds, now right.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
I was gonna say his career went in a slightly
different direction after that song. Okay.
Speaker 7 (18:34):
Classes Yeah, he had like an interview and it was
like a meme all over.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Okay, I've seen him in a meme or two. I
don't know if if it was that, but uh, all right.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
I like this beat. I'll say that, but no, I'm
not gonna try and act as if when I don't. Okay,
My hip hop knowledge is not exactly limited, but it
is not up to date either, like a lot of
it is. I mean, I'm a little bit older these days.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
Like I said, this song is probably twenty plus years old,
two thousand and eight, two thousand and eight. So let's
do some math here. So that's seventeen years oldeen years ago.
It's just slightly How about this jam, mart, Let's bring
it back on, Let's let's land This ship song is
just a few months younger than Cooper Flag. How about that?
Speaker 1 (19:15):
Well done?
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Cooper Flag born in December right there? Yeah, it was
it December of six, So yeah, so he's about So
this song is about eighteen months younger than Cooper Flag.
It would be eligible for the twenty twenty seven NBA Draft,
but we'll focus on the twenty twenty five NBA Draft.
Cooper Flag is your number one overall pick. We just
talked a minute ago about just you know, just some
(19:38):
of the immediate discourse that that that becomes, you know,
part of the conversation when he gets selected about the Mavericks,
this and that. Unfortunately, there was another discourse that I
was really hoping that we weren't gonna get.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
But you knew it was coming, bro, I did.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
I thought maybe we could get through like two days
without getting to it. Nah, well you know you sent
me a David Aldridge clip or a David Aldridge right up.
We'll get to that in a moment. But you got
to hear what came out of first take yesterday. This
courtesy of Peter Rosenberg.
Speaker 7 (20:16):
We're all adults. We can have a real life conversation
right now. Last time I checked, we still live in America, right.
Cooper Flag is a white guy, maybe the best white
American prospects since Larry Bird. Right, Let's not act as
if we don't live in America. We're not seeing what's
happening with Caitlin Clark in the WNBA. Cooper Flag is
(20:39):
going to be an instant impact player in the NBA.
I think Danny will agree, he is ready to go that.
Speaker 8 (20:45):
Kid could play right now if he's nearly as good
as people expect. I think when it comes to intrigue,
actual intrigue that people are talking about day to day,
no one's going to be more intriguing and get more
eyeballs than with Cooper, Like Zulian Dallas.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
That was Peter Rosenberg ESPN.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Does he now work for ESPN.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
I'm not I'm not trying to be no yeah, no, no, no,
I'm not trying to be that guy that's like, oh,
I don't know who that guy was, Like, I.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
Don't know who he is, Like he's never heard of
Tom New York radio hosts.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
Okay, Well, I worked.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
For WWE for a long time, so I was just
curious and if he's working, if he went from w
w E to ESPN, I would say the McAfee thing
probably helped.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
Well, I was gonna say, is like I had never
really heard the name. And then I looked him up
a little bit and people were like, oh, he's a
wrestling guy. But I want to talk about that take
and and a couple of things here is one. First
of all, I love like he was kind of it
was kind of funny to listen to and if the
visual is better. But he's kind of like dipping his
toe in, like I'm going here, and like you can
(21:48):
see everybody on set, like we're about to do this now,
aren't we. But two, I just want to share my
thoughts on it really quick, and and and and then
I'll get it over to you. I have two quick thoughts.
I'll be quick. One, listen, I am not gonna be
disingenuous and say that Caitlyn Clark's popularity has zero to
do with her being white. Okay, but the WNBA has
(22:09):
had plenty of white stars that did not cross over
in the manner in which Caitlyn Clark did. And we
know the name Sue Bird, Lena Della don pretty honest,
Stuart whatever. Two, you know her game is, what does it?
But two, this is the part that I think is
actually the real story here. He was a white But
(22:31):
by the way, I just want to set the record
straight here, he was white when he was a Duke
last year. I think I don't know if everybody is
aware of that. I'm not sure if Peter Rosenberg is
aware of that. He was white at Duke last year
for the number one team in the country, and he
really didn't cross over and become the thing that I
thought he was going to be. And so one, don't
(22:53):
compare him to Kayln Clark, because I think she's a
once in a lifetime unicorn. Two, I actually think if
he's gonna be, if he becomes a thing, it's gonna
be because of his play. Because he was a white
superstar this last year, a duke, and nobody really cared
that much. And I say that as somebody who loves
college basketball, but also it's going to be because he's
(23:15):
really awesome. So I thought the take was lame. To
go back to the first segment, I don't think people
know how to just talk sports and immediately have to
interject are they the championship favorite? Well, it's only because
he's white. Well, it's like, and this is just another
example of why people are driven crazy by people in
(23:36):
our industry. We can't get through thirty six hours after
the draft without it immediately defaulting to, well, if he's good,
the only reason he's gonna be popular is because he's white.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
It's very unfortunate and it just kind of shows where
we are. So so you said I mentioned and sent
you that David aldrichby So Aldridge wrote a big time,
like long sort of precursor to Sam Vestine's NBA Draft primer,
which is comparable, and even Aldridge makes this point in
the piece to Dame Brugler's Beast. It comes out before
(24:08):
the NFL Draft, and there's always like a setup piece
for that. So Aldridge kind of lays out and he
gives a lot of good information in this piece. It's lengthy,
and it goes through a lot of these prospects, and
you know this, Aaron like, we've come to a place
where we just don't know these college players, and I
certainly don't know these foreign players the way we once did,
and so these things are very helpful. So I'm reading
the article, and Aldridge is a Hall of Fame writer.
(24:33):
Haven't agreed with everything that he said, especially in recent years.
But Cooper Flag, of course, is going to be the
first one that's mentioned. He's in the headline, and so
there are two paragraphs here that started out what he
was saying about Cooper Flag, and I'm just gonna I'm
gonna read it again. I'm gonna read it out loud.
When we get to the second paragraph. I just need
(24:54):
somebody to explain to me why the second paragraph needed
to be here at all and what is the purpose
of this? First paragraph says, quote, absolutely, no one involved
with basketball at any level Begrudge's Flag this moment, his
moment in the spotlight. The sentiment is universal, as it's
been since the moment he burst onto the scene as
(25:14):
a teenager out of Newport, Maine a few years ago.
Cooper Flag is the man. He doesn't duck anyone. He'll
play anyone, anytime, anywhere, and his team will usually win.
And to first paragraph, nothing wrong with that at all? Interesting? Okay,
second paragraph, The fact that he's white matters not in
(25:36):
the least to real ballers, as it didn't matter when
Larry Bird came into the national consciousness at Indiana State
in the late seventies, where John Stockton in the eighties
or Steve Nash in the nineties. White kids and black
kids or Latino or Asian kids need people to emulate.
And by the way, a lot of those black and
Latino and Asian kids will emulate Flag too. If you
(25:59):
can play, no one who loves the orange leather cares
about your skin color. Cooper can hoop end quote?
Speaker 2 (26:07):
Can I jump in on that?
Speaker 6 (26:08):
Really?
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Quick, yeah you know what that actually sounds like. And
now we're just going down a crazy rabbit hole. But
like the guy that has to be like, well, I'm
not racist. I have a black friend. And it's like yeah, okay, okay,
we get it, young kids like whatever. Anyway, that's what
it felt like to me, is like David Aldridg's like
somehow having to be like, no, it's not about that,
(26:31):
but it is about that, but it shouldn't be about that,
but I'm gonna make it about that even though I
didn't need to make it about that. Does that I
don't know.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
I don't know. He's over explaining something that doesn't need
to be explained. We all know he's white. Like you
said he was white at Duke. I'm pretty sure he
was white in Maine too, Like I'm pretty sure he's
been white for a long time. Like we're very cognizant
of this. So the second paragraph seems to me to
(26:58):
be basically saying, listen, he's gonna go number one and
he's white. But who wha, whoa, before you freak out,
he's actually good, which is like he's not like all
the other white people. He's actually good. That's how it said,
and the reason why this is just just you gotta
be better than this. Anybody's got to be better than this,
(27:19):
darn sh or David Aldridge needs to be better than this.
And I don't know if maybe he didn't think this
through or if somebody didn't, like if somebody edited this
and didn't say, yeah, we probably shouldn't put this in there.
Somebody is missing here, and if al Dridge didn't self
edit and realized like it shouldn't have taken And I
don't know if anybody even saw it. I was reading
the article and I said it to you because I
was just like, what is this? Like, what are we
(27:41):
doing in this moment? So I opened up the phones
last night and we had a bunch of people immediately
call in, and a few of them made a pretty
good point. They said, it seems like he is speaking
to the black community to say this guy's legit, that
he is talking to the black community, and he's basically saying,
I know, you guys gonna side eye this because we
all know the color of his skin. But he's really good, y'all.
(28:06):
Needed he's a real one. This one's legit over here,
not like the ones over here, he's legit either way. Like,
let's say that's true and that there's sense behind that.
There's no question about it. There's no reason to put
that in here. All you have to say is that
first paragraph about how he's good and how nobody begrudges
this moment and he's he's a real one and all
(28:27):
this other kind of stuff. Like the stuff he said
in the first paragraph is great. The second paragraph is
just like, dude, you're telling on yourself, Like, what are
you suggesting here? If you took the word white out
and put any other characteristic of any other group, be
it their gender, their race, their sexuality, any of those
kinds of things in there, and wrote the exact same
(28:48):
article with that characteristic listed instead of the word white,
people would be calling for your job and would be
outside the New York Times offices demanding the athletic fire
you are to spend you without pay.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
Yeah, I just I'll make a quick point because we
gotta get to say her. But isn't that like, isn't
that on the audience to decide, like if he's legit
or not. I mean, like it's it's like anything else,
It doesn't matter what it is is that he's either
gonna sink or swim, and it's not because he's white.
It's not because he's not white. It's either because he's
(29:21):
good enough for he isn't and that will be determined
in time. Like, you know, I don't even know if
there is a comparable, you know, cross sport whatever. It's like,
you know, nobody was like, well Serena, no, but she's legit.
It's like, no, we just watch her and she's freaking awesome,
even in a sport that you know has historically been
very white. She you know, she looked different. But when
(29:43):
nobody had to like be like, well, you know, just
just trust me on this one, she's really it's like, no,
she's freaking awesome, the best that's ever done it. And
like I'm obviously not saying coop flags, but like like
it's it's so obvious that it didn't need to be there,
but then the fact that it's there makes it even
more weird because, like you said, J Martin, I'll be
really quick here is like the whole point is like
(30:07):
the whole point of what we do as consumers and
fans is that we don't need to like, isn't that
part of what our complaint is about some of this,
like first take ESPN culture of like no, Bronni's an
NBA player, just trust us on this, Like this is
the reverse of that of like, no, he's really good.
Trust It's like the games will be played and we
will figure it out. But if he's good, it isn't
(30:29):
gonna be because he's white. It's gonna be because he's good.
Does that make sense, Yeah, it does.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
I mean it just seems like very quickly I would
say that the way this reads to me, And of course,
look I'm not in David Aldridge's heart, so I'm not
saying this is what this means. But it almost is like, yeah,
we all know whites get preferential treatment and usually like
this guy actually deserves to go number one, unlike a
lot of others would like that's kind of like you
can read it that way, you can take it however
(30:54):
you want to take it. It's just more than it
being like offensive. It's just unnecessy like it's just that
that did not make your piece better, It didn't make
your reporting better. It told us nothing whatsoever about Cooper
Flag except that he's white, but he's actually good and
it's just like, man, we know he's good. We've been
(31:15):
told he's good before he even got to Duke, Like everybody,
everybody who watched college basketball last year knows he's good.
Everyone who's listened to anybody that covers the NBA and
is on in the inner circles and all that understands
that Cooper flag is good. You don't have to caveat
it by saying yes, we understand. Like when you look
at him, you wouldn't think he's good, but I promise
(31:37):
you he's good. I just I believe that that is
beneath somebody, that is beneath anybody that is like bottom
of the sea level journalism. To me, that's just that's
just bad. It's it's something you. You should be better
than that, whoever you are, you should be better than that.
And somebody like David Alders should definitely be better than that.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
I wish we could open the phone lines, but we
do have a lot to get to, including a guy
that I don't need to tell America how good he is,
Steve Desaga. I know it's a little bit of a
heavy transition, but uh, it's starting, man, so.
Speaker 9 (32:08):
So so what I'm hearing is that Cooper Flag is
one of the good ones.
Speaker 1 (32:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (32:13):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (32:13):
So it's like when I say, like, Arnie Spanier stinks,
but it's not because he's old. It's just he just stinks,
you know.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
It's like because he's terrible.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
Yeah exactly. That's it's all there is to it.
Speaker 9 (32:23):
So, hey, Markel Foltz was taking number one overall. Yeah,
Andrew Bogan was taking.
Speaker 2 (32:28):
Number one overall Bennett, Yeah.
Speaker 9 (32:30):
Exactly, or Odin or you know, on and on and on.
We have one late game in Major League Baseball in Anaheim,

You loved That was Jerome and charleston was not happy
with a Year Old dave. ROBERTS take I think i
remember the game.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
IN question I think i've suggested That maybe roberts should
Have saved otani from himself by not letting him try
to steal, a base because the risk. Wasn't there if
you're gonna have somebody steal, a base put somebody else,
out there put a pinch runner out there or something.
Like that, and obviously yes it was, an accident but
he doesn't get hurt if he doesn't actually try to steal.
(36:47):
THAT base I think i, remember that like us talking,
about that because it happened live while we were on.
THE show i was just Happy for jerome because if
he sat on that for, a year, LIKE man i
kind of wish he called the show the next week.
OR something i hope this didn't bother him that much for.
A YEAR like i felt good that he called that
(37:08):
he held me to account in his own mind for
something that he took. OFFENSE to i just wish he
hadn't taken, so long, because man that's a long time
to hold a grudge Over A dave. Roberts, take well
the good.

Really quickly Eric, in virginia You're On Fox sports Radio
With ertorius Jayson mart what do you think about the
discourse that has already taken Off With. Cooper flag, you know.
Speaker 12 (38:22):
First, OF all i want to say, thank. YOU guys
i listened to y'all Often when i'm riding home from
work in. The evening, Thank YOU and i just want,
to say it's bad man to See Will cooper flag
turn into what's Happening With caitlyn clark with that you?
Know determined you know now he's treated on on and off,
(38:43):
the floor and it's just sad, to. See MAN but
i wish the best, For him and congratulations to everyone who.
Speaker 1 (38:49):
Was, drafted eric.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
Thank you where do you work that you're driving? Home
from if you don't? Mind, mess, oh okay. It's okay We Lost.
Eric jamar, YOU know i don't know if we're gonna
have time to Get To, caitlin clark but it feels
like she's either physically hurt or she's hit an, emotional
WALL and i think part of it is just this
burden that has been so unfairly put. On her we
only got about a, minute LEFT but i hope that
(39:12):
we can Just Let cooper flag be either good or
not good based on the merits of, his game and
every time he, does well he doesn't turn Into The
great white hope and every time he doesn't do well
turns into the most. OVERRATED player i don't know if we'll,
get IT but i hope. We, do YEAH what i
hope is.
Speaker 1 (39:28):
We Don't get jokic two. Point zero AND what i
mean by that is there are some people that COVER
the nba that have Dogged on jokich for pretty obviously,
inappropriate REASONS and i don't want to see That with
cooper flag from those people or. ANYBODY else i don't
(39:48):
think guys in the league are going to. SEE that
i think that they all are going to think. He's
legitimate but there are some PEOPLE that i feel like
come out there with, an agenda that have, a Platform
and i'm hoping that that will be.
Speaker 2 (39:58):
Diminished that, of course, you know LOST an mvp because.
Of That So Fox sports radio Er Toards jay smart will.

Every weekend be sure to Tune Into Fox Sports radio's
countdown presented BY, bet Mgm every Saturday and, sunday Morning
not ampton noon eastern Six. To pacific we couching on
(41:01):
all the. Biggest games Tune into countdown presented BY bet
Mgm every Saturday and sunday morning right Here On Fox
sports radio And the. iHeartRadio. App, jmart so you have
been on since we got a final IN, the nba
and we don't have to spend a ton of time
Breaking down. Game seven but, you, KNOW Listen nba finals
went two weeks and there are certainly some very interesting
(41:22):
conversations that came Out of game Seven last sunday Night In.
Oklahoma City, oklahoma city, of course WINS the. Nba title
The Story, tyrese Halliburton. THE achilles i want to get
Into the achilles stuff in, a minute but before we get, into,
that reaction thoughts on HOW the nba season itself. ACTUALLY ended, i.
Speaker 1 (41:42):
Mean it went, seven GAMES and i think it was
compelling in terms of just the story that was told
THROUGHOUT The, nba finals television, coverage notwithstanding and some of
the other things that were. Going on you just Hate,
that haliburton who had those three threes To start, game
seven wasn't there the. Whole, Time look i'm A huge,
(42:03):
thunder fan but that's not what anybody wants to see in.
That Spot and, halberton said if he had to do,
over again he'd have done the, same THING and i
don't begrudge. HIM that i would, have too like, he said,
YOU know i wouldn't have been. ABLE to i might
have regretted it my, whole life, BECAUSE again i don't
believe in. Championship windows so you never know If the
pacers ever get there again it's, game seven or if
(42:25):
you think you, can go. You go, and yeah he Tore,
the achilles and it reminds you a lot of what
happened Happened To kevin durant in the finals years Ago
In golden state after he had the one. Little injury
it became the big one after that fact when he came.
Back in but it was hard, To see it was
hard to watch from. That PERSPECTIVE but i came away
(42:46):
from the finals Feeling Like oklahoma city had completed the
goal that they set and showed that their regular season,
was not, you, know Fugazy As ben maller likes, to
say it. Wasn't fake and we've seen a lot of
one seeds that teams that dominate the regular season who play,
really hard but then, the postseason everybody starts playing and
(43:08):
you see kind of the weed separate from the. Chat
THERE but i think the bigger story is just, the
respect hopefully that was gained By The. Indiana PACERS they
i don't think they were taken seriously until well after
they should, have been and they just kept. ON fighting
i mean that first Half in, game seven Even after halliburton,
went down they were still playing incredibly hard and they
(43:29):
could have gotten beaten by thirty because of the way
the second, half transpired but they kept at least fighting
it to try and at least keep it interesting as much,
as possible a lot of. HEART there I Think rick
carlisle deserves a lot. Of credit but just, those guys
whether you're Talking about Turner or siakam Or nem Hard
Or nie smith, or whoever it is just a lot
of guys that coalesced and just a great. Basketball team
(43:51):
AND so i think we saw a very highly played
series between both teams where you saw some good and
some bad, from both but a good ebb. And FLOW
so i think generally FOR, the nba just in terms
of the product that was put out on the floor by,
THE teams i think you GOT a, I thought i
think you got a very worthy. Championship round it.
Speaker 2 (44:13):
Was definitely a worthy. CHAMPIONSHIP round i do it does
feel a little unfulfilling. To, Me, listen okay, Injuries, happen
okay see wins and never gonna take away. The banner
but to, your point, You Know hal burton was playing
on one Leg in, Game six indie, wins that and
then he was looking really Good in, game seven and
you feel Terrible because i'll, BE honest i, really thought if,
(44:36):
you know nothing happened, TO him I thought indiana maybe
should be the favorite going into. Next year given what
they've done the last two years. Really quickly h and
it doesn't actually have to, be quickly but just The the.
Achilles stuff everybody has. THEIR takes i Did See. Adam silver,
I'M trying, I swear i try out to criticize them all,
(44:58):
the time but sometimes he just says. Funny stuff but
he is. That quote we're GONNA use ai to try
to get to the bottom Of the achilles. INJURY problem
i think everybody knows what we're. Talking about but not
Just That tyrese haliburton tore, his achilles but that an
injury that seemingly for basically all of basketball eternity was
kind of this old guy injury end. Of Career, Isaiah Thomas,
(45:20):
dominique wilkins, You Know. Kobe bryant, you know We Saw
kevin durant in, twenty nineteen but then obviously, Most Recently
jason Tatum And. Tyrese halliburton I've heard Damian And, damian
lillard but even dames, you know. Mid thirties, BUT right,
i would but still you're, RIGHT though, i, mean like
how often were their achilles tears period over like the
(45:41):
first fifty years OF the nba or at least like
the last twenty his medicine's. Gotten better now we had
three guys who had had the same injury in. THESE
playoffs i kind of have a sort of theory, on
It and i've listened to all. Of them do you
have any strong opinions on why this might? Be Happening?
Speaker 1 (45:57):
To jmartin the only two THINGS that i continue to.
Point two one is just Something that i've noticed from
sight and maybe it's just, flat Wrong but i'll give you.
That opinion but the other one is Just and i've
had this conversation with people through the years in. Various
contexts specialization in youth sports is something that you can
(46:18):
find some articles, about this and there are some pretty,
VALID opinions, i think across. The board but if you kind,
of specialize like think about Like How, lonzo ball if
you've ever seen like his workout regimen and like what
he was doing in, high school and like the kind
of odd stuff that they had. Him doing they were
preparing him to, play basketball but they were also breaking
(46:40):
his body in. The, process sure my wife was listening
to a podcast, yesterday about, you know how women can
stay in shape as they get a little bit older
and keep their muscle tone up and all that kind.
Of stuff and one of the things that, this woman
who seems like she's pretty on, the level was suggesting, is,
like dude you got to do more. Weight training you
(47:01):
can't do cardio, every day and that means not even to.
Lose weight your body can't handle it. That way and
it's the same THING like i admit Personally that i'm
on the bike way too often. THESE days i used,
to RUN but i have flat Feet and i've kind
of been advised by doctors not to do IT if
i still want to be able to play with my
kids for too many, more years because it's just going
(47:21):
to continue to battle my knees and rough. Them Up
so i've had to kind of change UP what. I
do But now i'm on the bike almost, every DAY
and i wonder if, that is, you know actually doing
more harmed and GOOD that i need to kind. Of
differentiate but one of the things that you have heard
increasingly in youth sports is don't just specialize in, one
sport like play multiple things that work different parts of,
(47:44):
your body that enable different kinds of movement that, you know.
Utilized FLEXIBILITY like i played tennis that was my sport.
Growing up IT'S what i played in. High school and,
you know there's a lot of fitness, involved there but
it's a certain kind. Of fitness you got to be
able to mix. That up and so that kind of
goes hand in hand with the Thing that i've noticed from,
(48:06):
just eyesight and that is one fairly common denominator to
me in a lot Of these achilles situations that we've
seen in recent years IN the nba is these dudes
don't seem like they have soccer, player, calves right they
don't have tennis, player calves and that doesn't mean that
(48:26):
they should. Have those there are different it's a different,
skill set but the kind of explosiveness and the like
just kind of force and pressure that they are putting
because they are elevating into the air and they're landing
on a hard wooden, floor repeatedly and of course they're
running at a, high speed change, in direction, you know
spinning all of those kinds. Of things it just feels
(48:49):
like a lot of these dudes look like they don't do.
Much legwork and this, is somebody this is coming from
somebody that worked in pro wrestling for a long time
and there were dudes that cared nothing about anything but their,
upper body and they were wondering why their legs were
always shot or they were always out of action for
three four months at a time because they had something
going on with. Their legs, it's like because you're not
paying attention to them, because cosmetically it doesn't show up.
(49:11):
As much so you're just not that's not the thing's
gonna make you money in the, short term so you're
much more focused on. The aesthetics now it's not quite
the same IN, the NBA but i do think a
lot of these guys Just don't they, look spindly like
their legs just don't look fully developed and worked ON
because i think the specialization in the way that they
(49:32):
train doesn't necessarily put an emphasis. On that and that's just,
my eyes that's That is that could be a one thousand.
Percent wrong it's just my. Own, THEORY yeah i.
Speaker 2 (49:43):
Think one as far as the specialization, Is concerned i've
heard other people, suggest THAT and, I listen i think
there's something to. It is, you know it's. It's one
it's it's just, you know playing just probably too. MANY games,
i mean, everybody knows, you KNOW the. Aau culture you
play three games in. A day, This THAT so i
think there's definitely something. To THAT and i, do think
(50:05):
like like, you said is that you play, different sports
you not only learn, different skills but you use different
muscles all. Of that the only THING that i can
SAY that i think really makes sense to me as
to why we've seen an increase the last couple YEARS
is i do think the game is played so much
(50:26):
further out on. Both ends and, you, know listen we
all WATCH That, nba finals all five guys on pretty
much both teams can shoot, the, Three right so you
know You're Guarding ched holmgren and twenty years ago he's seven,
foot two he's not leaving more than five feet from.
The basket well now he's twenty two feet out and
you know you're caught up on a pick and you're
trying to catch up, with them, you know three feet
(50:48):
behind the three, point line and it's a lot of ground.
To COVER so i have heard, that theory and THAT
one i do think makes sense. To me And like
i'll just ask, YOU This, J, mart like have You
ever i'm sure sure. You have have you ever either
COVERED an nba game or a major college. Basketball game
and the ONLY reason i ask Is because i'm not
saying it in a. Condescending way but it's like until
(51:09):
your court side and you see how big these, guys,
are yeah and how fast, they move like, it is
it is like kind. OF crazy, I mean i'm going
off on a side, tangent here but it's like how
often do you meet just somebody that's just like six' seven?
In real? Life you know and now it's like they're
they're playing full. Speed and, whatever you know we can
(51:30):
make fun of HOW HOW often ni nba guys, play
and lowman but but it's like they're. Going full speed
now they got to guard twenty two to. Twenty three feet,
they're you know they're they're playing out to twenty, two
twenty two twenty three feet and the speed and power with.
Which they're playing and then maybe it is some of
the stuff that you said as well with with. HOW
they're training i just to me that one passes the
(51:51):
smell test to me of the game is just played
so much further out on the court that maybe that
has something to do with.
Speaker 1 (51:57):
It, AS well YEAH i mean i, THINK there's something
i mean that makes it, ton of, sense and, Yeah,
you're right like you don't get a sense of the
speed and the size until you're either courtside or if
you haven't ever done THIS for an nfl game or a,
college football Game it's very you can't DUPLICATE, it on
tv and you can't even duplicate it from the two
hundred level of whatever stadium you're in when you. Were,
(52:19):
STANDING there like i remember THE moment when i realized
just how different a universe pro sports is or high level.
College football is AND it's when I was covering ALABAMA
football Against Wku, against western kentucky. MY alma mater i
was there. AT the, time i, was you, know IN
broadcasting so i was covering a Game For the sporting
SHOW and so i was on The Field at Brian
(52:42):
denny at alabama and this do walk by that was,
absolutely JUST monstrous and i was just kind of like what, in, The,
world man like who? Was this guy it was The?
Punter for? Alabama WHOA really and i was like it
just caught me. COMPLETELY off guard i, was just? Like
WHOA that like i saw THE jersey and i realized,
who he was but it was just, kind, of like
(53:03):
wait a sec man like The punter for alabama just
like made me do, a double take like that dude
is way too big to. Be out here. That's not
fair but it turns out, he's the punter so it's
like it's just. A different universe and, to, your point
yes the pace has, changed A bit although i mean
they played it a lot faster paced back in the
day people give, them credit for, but you're right the
(53:26):
game was played a lot more on the inside. THAN
the outside i, think that's true and, that you know
you got bigger guys whose bodies are not really meant
to play twenty five feet, from the basket and the
high pick and roll game and some of that kind
of stuff may. CONTRIBUTE to it i definitely think that
(53:46):
there is that there is. Something TO that but i
also think like one of THE reasons why i came
out and SAID After the nba draft YEARS ago That
I thought john morant was going to have a better
Pro Career than zion williamson was based on THE fact
that I didn't think zion's body was going to hold
up to THE game that i saw him. Playing, in
college sure and what, HE was like i just don't
(54:06):
feel it's like, or his legs are his knees going.
To hold up he's got a, ton of weight but
he explodes into the AIR like and i just don't
know how that is going. To WORK out so i
THINK there's probably i don't know that it's one factor that.
Contributes to it it's. PROBABLY different things i Don't Know
if adam SILVER'S Robotic controlled ai skynet or whatever is
(54:30):
going to be able to, Determine it either but it
is something that they need to try. And FIGURE out
and i don't think it's a low, Management THING either
like i don't think this needs to then float. BACK to,
that i mean they've already accommodated the players. SO very
Much I know draymond green's come out in the last
couple of days and said there need to be fewer games.
AND all this i feel like they've done about all
(54:52):
they can do in a lot of these in a lot.
Of these situations it's just it's, a rough deal and
you certainly for it to happen, on that stage, in
that moment it's just it paints a grim picture of
how difficult it CAN be for nba players.
Speaker 2 (55:09):
To, stay, healthy yeah no there's not, much to, it
and listen, AND you know i know we poke it
at him so, over A lot but i think the
one thing you could say about him is if he
had an Answer to, THE achilles thing i think. HE'D
do it i don't think having fewer games is the
answer unless players are willing to, give back salary which
is never, going to happen and so they got to.
(55:30):
Figure it out but. It's Certainly interesting tyrese haliburton among
several Players with, major Achilles Injuries, including Jason Tatum, including
damian lillard Which, means The, bucks the Pacers and the
celtics are all going into, next season shorthanded which also
MEANS the, next i mean in theory they could. Be the,
(55:53):
favorite of course they don't, have a coach but an
interesting name certainly popped up over the last twenty four.

You thank, You very Much. Steve de sagar sega will
be back in just a few moments with. His extended
update lot to get into a lot that we haven't,
gotten Into, yet j mart Including something that sega. Just
Brought Up The new york knicks still don't, have a
coach So They fired Tom thibodeau. On june third remember that'd,
(01:00:59):
be a final like a solid, two weeks plus it's
been a week since they've been over and the next
do not have a head coach After Making the. Eastern,
conference finals now as we discussed, AT the time i
defended them in THE moment because i assume they. HAD a,
plan i. Yeah they don't but here is the latest twist. In,
the story okay. Quite, a twist yes so this Is
(01:01:21):
according TO knicks fan. TV and listen i don't know
exactly how. CREDIBLE they are i will say it is
A pretty monstrous, knicks YouTube channel and all of the
aggregate pages picked, up THIS tweet so i don't know if,
it's GONNA happen but i think it's at. Least worth
discussing they tweeted out nine Hours Ago. Quote knicks news according,
(01:01:44):
to League Sources both Taylor Jenkins and mike brown are
headed for a second. Round of interviews but this is where.
It gets Interesting mike h nori is. Still Being considered
the knicks have also Reached Out to south Carolina Head
coach don staley. About The, JOB j martin I Got
(01:02:05):
some don staley takes up my Sleeve here and i'll
get to them in. Just a, minute but again we're
not saying that this is sham's. That's Reporting it but i'll.
Say This too don staley has been linked to. Men's
College jobs becky hammond has obviously BEEN linked to nba,
head coaching job so it is a, matter of, when
not if a female will one DAY be an. NBA
(01:02:26):
head coach i don't think it's the Craziest Thing that
don staley's name, Could be linked but what do you
make of this? Piece of news assuming.
Speaker 1 (01:02:33):
That it's Accurate just THE knicks, ARE i mean i
can't believe how. Bad they look and this Isn't Just
because don staley's name. Is picked off i'm not really.
Even commenting there it's just like they had no clue
what they were Gonna Do. After tom. Thibodeaux none crazy
it is mind boggling to me considering where, that team,
(01:02:55):
was you know how close they were to GETTING to,
an nba finals and what they have on that roster,
in the future and kind of the trend of just
the fans that have been loyal for a long time
now being joined by a lot of fans that are
willing to pay to come, see them again and everything
seems so, positive about it and then it's just the
(01:03:17):
thing is such. A disaster optically And Then so don
stawey's name has picked up, in this piece along Of
Course with Taylor Jenkins and mike brown and all of this,
kind of stuff but, like no plan and now the
discourse surrounding this is going to be insufferable, on all
sides like if this actually, Is a thing, and, of
(01:03:40):
course yeah you mentioned the other, the peripheral sites the
tertiary sites around, this Original Report like sporting news has.
WRITTEN on this si has. WRITTEN on this a lot
of people have now picked up on and tried to
discuss this and talked about it in the world in,
which We live, and you're right it is going to
be a when and not if this happens that a
(01:04:02):
female COACH is an nba team at some point. In
the future you do a lot Worse. Than down staley
it still seems. Insane to me it just, IT'S just
like i can't believe That then the knicks are really
and truly just going all over the place. To do,
something it's like this is this is the kind of
thing you would expect from a team that really needs.
(01:04:23):
To Have interest the knicks don't need, to have interest
they just need to hire a. Good basketball coach i'm
not so sure that they didn't, already have one but
this just reeks of reeks of desperation and news cycle
and all like it's just it's so it's So ridiculous
that i'm not even sure what the take is at this,
(01:04:47):
point in time other than just what, Are. You doing
NICKS you're an nba franchise and you look like you're
being run like a really bad upward basketball team or
something like that, at this, point like what, You're a corporation.
YOU'RE a company I Know, it's JAMES dolan so i use,
those words loosely, but, my goodness guys like this is such.
(01:05:10):
A Bad Look If, I'm jaywen brunson, i'm just LIKE
where can i go for the summer to?
Speaker 8 (01:05:17):
Not?
Speaker 1 (01:05:17):
Be bothered LIKE where can i just go to relax
and get away from? EVERYTHING this is i Would Understand
if Jaywen Brunson contacted aaron rodgers about? A, darkness retreat
WELL where can i? GO to refocus a couple funny. Things,
ON that one a buddy Of Mine in new York
Actually saw jalen brunson at dinner like. A week ago
This Was, before DON staley so i don't know if
(01:05:38):
he's since gone to a. Commune or, whatever but two
it is funny that you Mentioned That Because karl anthony
towns there was a tweet Of An angry don staley
yelling and the caption of The Tweet was don staley
when cat picks up his third follow in, the First
Quarter and karl anthony town saw the tweet and out.
(01:06:00):
The laughing emoji so apparently it's, the. RIGHT response though
i think that's that's a Good. Response from kat.
Speaker 2 (01:06:05):
It is, a good response. So really quickly so, FIRST
of all i think you're one. Hundred percent accurate the
takes should be What are? The knicks doing this. Is
a disaster let me, ask you this what do You
Think of don staley POTENTIALLY as an? Nba HEAD coach
because i, Have a take i'll.
Speaker 5 (01:06:19):
Give.
Speaker 2 (01:06:19):
You mine first, first of all this is through no fault, Of,
her OWN okay but i am always dubious of the
college coach that has the definitive talent advantage in ninety
five percent. Of their games and it's Not Just a.
Don staley thing I'M not being i will Be Critical
(01:06:41):
of don staley in. Half a second but in, this particular,
case great, recruiter great coach she puts, together those rosters
she deserves credit for having more talent than ninety five percent.
Of HER opponents but i also bring it up because
like the track record of, guy guys specifically, let's be
honest being able to handle owing to a professional setting
(01:07:01):
where you don't have the strategic advantage or you don't
have the talent advantage every single time you take the
field or court it is. Not Good right nick saban
did not last LONG. In The nfl martin weiss brought
up this point to me when we were kind of.
Changing Studios here urban meyer kind of a disaster when
everyone had equal to or greater talent than Him With.
(01:07:24):
The jacksonville jaguars so. That's one is and, by the
way since, everyone's, Gonna, say oh torres you know your
you kind, of got WHATEVER that's also I Don't think
dan hurley would WORK. IN the nba i think you would.
Lose his, mind you know a good SEASON, in the
nba you're still gonna lose thirty times over the course.
Of a season, and it's, like you know you come from,
a situation Where In say, dan hurley's case you're losing
(01:07:44):
maybe five six. Times A Year in, don staley's case
you're maybe losing. Once or twice i'll, also say this
and THIS is where i will be a. LITTLE bit
critical i don't think there is anyone who has been
treated with more kid gloves in, all of Sports. And
on staley, in other words she is the Only person
that i'm aware of that gets one hundred percent praise,
(01:08:07):
when it's deserved and you cannot criticize her when. Things
GO bad like i can say from my, own personal,
Experience you know i've tweeted out a couple negative things
and it's how can you say? That about this and
how can?
Speaker 3 (01:08:20):
You?
Speaker 2 (01:08:20):
Do that dada, AND it's like i actually think it's,
The greatest compliment, let's be honest the greatest compliment you
can give. A female coach i'm holding her to the
Same Standard, as Dan Hurley, as John Caliperry, as tom.
Thibodeau as whoever and there's been a, couple of, TIMES
you know i mean you go back to three or.
FOUR years ago i guess it was, three seasons ago
(01:08:41):
that game where they were Heavily Favored against kaitlyn Clark in,
the Final Four and caitlyn clark. Absolutely, destroyed them now
the following year they won, the national championship but that
year it was like they were. The overwhelming favorite they.
Had no answers part of It Was, about caitlyn clark
but part Of It was south carolina, in show Up.
READY to play i remember being critical at the how can?
You be critical they? Were thirty, eight, it's like yeah
(01:09:03):
but they were. The overwhelming favorites they didn't Close it
out This, year against yukon they got destroyed and looked completely,
unprepared to Play and maybe yuka was just that much
better blah. Blah BLAH whatever but i do think there,
is SOMETHING too like I haven't really i've heard pretty
much every coach in Every sport from i'm just trying
to think off the top. Of, my head uh, You know,
(01:09:27):
Whatever Sean, McVeigh nick, sirianni i mean, you go on
has anyone ever like Really Gone? After don stanley and
maybe she doesn't need to be or deserved to be
because her teams, are SO good but i would be
curious how she would handle things on like a five
game losing STREAK that every nba team is going, to
INEVITABLY have because i don't believe she's, taken THAT criticism
(01:09:48):
and i think she's actually frankly largely been treated.
Speaker 1 (01:09:50):
With kid gloves that's. AN interesting point i also think
to Your Point, ABOUT dan hurley i think, you can
go you can stay at the same sk but You
can say gino's never. Gone There either and geno's another
dude that tet a recruiting advantage for a long Long
time at yukon because, once he built, what he built
(01:10:11):
everybody wanted To go To yukon Pat. Summit at tennessee same.
Kind of Deal like if gino has never like you've
never really hear his name attached to just, About anything
else like he's just. Where he is his, Legacy is
set like if that's never been talked, about before there
Then Why does don stawey's name? Pop up now and
(01:10:33):
then the other thing is this and this would just
be kind of. Another discourse situation but what happens when
One of the knicks players disagrees with her and they
have a moment? On the sideline how? Is? That covered
now eventually that's going to be. Something that happens but
that's going to be part of this and it's going
to be absolutely infuriating on all sides the way that.
(01:10:56):
It is discussed, at that point you talk. About kid
gloves if you go from the kid gloves that you
Are Assessing for don staley to this point in, her
professional career she's Going To the. New york, media m
h that's where. She's gonna.
Speaker 2 (01:11:11):
Go first show let me let. Me jump in you
know how this this happens a couple times this summer
when you have just a FISTFIGHT at an, nfl training
camp and it's like everyone, in THE media and i hate,
to say it like the guys and girls who didn't play,
(01:11:32):
sports are like, oh my god they got. It a fight,
Oh My god tob Brady Yelled. At bill belichick and
then it's like every dude who's actually, played, is like
yeah there are fights every single. DAY at, practice i
mean can you, LIKE you, said i mean and it's
a perfectly normal interaction between a coach and a player
(01:11:54):
is to. Get into. IT it happens i don't want to,
say every game but it's not like. It doesn't happen
it's a great. Point by you LIKE that part i
hadn't even, Thought OF of, like i mean as you
know j there was a couple Of. TIMES with jalen
i Remember in the easter, what Was it the Celtics
series when thibodeau was wouldn't pull The Starters and jalen
brunson got in his face, and was like get. These
(01:12:16):
guys out, brunson WAS out But i think towns was,
in and whatever, and it's like can you Do That?
With don staley if you do Do It, with don
staley how's it? Gonna be, Covered, you know well it's, gonna.
Speaker 1 (01:12:26):
Be covered yep and, then past that there's gonna be
others that are on that are further that are on like,
the you know the feminist, side or whatever that are
gonna be upset that other people are upset and the
whole like that whole thing is just. Gonna be nauseating
it's gonna be coma inducing and annoying on. So many,
levels and again eventually you would think that. IT'S gonna
(01:12:49):
happen i just. Look at this it's gonna sound like a,
really big critique but this just feels like a straight up.
Gimmick to me this feels like we're gonna put the,
attention on us but this is. Legitimately out there. THEY'RE
doing this i cannot think that this is the best
decision that they could make, for their franchise unless they
(01:13:09):
just want to be the talk of the town Because
You hired don staley to be your head basketball COACH
in the Nba For The. NEW york knicks espn just
said it's next year. Of basketball coverage, AT that, point
i mean They're already run their entire network basically is
run by one pundit at this point in time Who
(01:13:31):
bleeds the knicks so bad he wants to talk about
them even when they don't have. A draft pick when
he's all over the coverage during their draft coverage like,
you do this this becomes a, topic For everybody from
Monica McNutt to Stephen A to tim legler. To everybody
else it's, gonna be like you guys have got to. Talk,
about this actually, You know what We're gonna BUMP brownie
to B to. The b block we're gonna talk about
(01:13:54):
THIS in the a block four or five. Days this
week it's. Gonna be insufferable Which is why I'm Just,
like new york what exactly is? Your goal here is
it to hire a basketball coach or is it to?
Speaker 2 (01:14:06):
Be a show, i'll say this and this is. GONNA
sound mean i both don't want, it to happen right
because the discourse would, Be SO bad but i would
be genuinely curious what would happen when it would be
Time To. Criticize don staley and, by The way and
i'm not trying To like watch, don stalely fail but
(01:14:27):
like it's different If it's the knicks as Opposed To,
the CHARLOTTE hornets and i know that's always the, default
bad team but if they're just a team that's expected
to be bad, and is bad then. That's one thing
but you would obviously. Play that's true drafted. IN ninety
nine i read THAT today as i was getting ready,
For the, show so, no you know and it, would
be like it would be very interesting to see how
(01:14:51):
critical people would be. Willing TO be and i hate,
to say it but it's it's. Just the truth it's
just the truth. AND very interesting i kind of hope

(01:16:16):
Like lightweight title but we got baseball, to get to
and we're certainly going To Start with dave Parker because
The hall of fame outfielder passed away at the age.
Of seventy four over. A decade ago he Was diagnosed
with parkinson's Known In, the national League Winning a World
series With Pittsburgh and willie stargel in. Nineteen seventy nine
he Also Won a world series nineteen eighty nine With
(01:16:37):
That great. Oakland a's team he Played for the pirates
for a bat a decade though through. Nineteen Eighty three
dave parker Grew up in cincinnati and also Played for
the reds from nineteen eighty four, To eighty seven but
right around nineteen eighty he was easily one of the best.
Guys in baseball nineteen seventy seven and Seventy eight day
PARKER won the nl batting, title Each Year a gold.
(01:16:58):
Glove each year seventy Eight He WAS. National league mvp
his career batting average. Was two ninety he wound Up
Being an all. Star seven times and the clips have
been all over the place tonight about When He Was
ALL star game mvp in. Nineteen seventy nine, in that
game and they Really Took The all star game, seriously
back then and it was a. Very close game, from
(01:17:20):
right field he threw out a runner at third and,
the seventh inning threw out a runner at the plate in,
the eighth Inning And his national league won. Seven To,
SIX dave parker i, did not realize was the first
ballplayer to earn one million. Dollars. Per year wow by
nineteen eighty five he won the first. Home Run Derby
the baseball writers never voted Him into the hall a
(01:17:40):
committee Did this past december when he got fourteen of sixteen.
Votes From them dave parker Is going into cooperstown in
a month and passes away today at the age. Of,
seventy four well we had some Shutouts Again In. Major league,
baseball First off the rockies were involved in. One of,
Them of Course Milwaukee beat college, rodo five Nothing so
(01:18:01):
the rockies have not only lost five, in a row
their record is eighteen. And sixty five as we're just
past the halfway point.
Speaker 2 (01:18:08):
OF the season i figured they.
Speaker 1 (01:18:10):
Were the team that had Shut out the milwaukee. Based
on history it was not the.
Speaker 9 (01:18:15):
Other way around offense went one for twenty Eight for
the rockies. With eleven strikeouts We Had the white sox
on a homer in the six winning One Nothing, over
San Francisco, beating robbie ray who had been eight and.
Two This year the yankees got shot out at Home
by the a's, seven to nothing held to, just three
hits So we had according to the Great Baseball, researcher
(01:18:36):
sarah langs over the past four days, in the majors
there have been nineteen, shutouts by teams which is actually
tied for the most over any. Four Day Span in,
major league history you'd have to go back to the
all pitching season of, nineteen sixty eight the last time
it happened nineteen shutouts over a. Four day period nineteen
(01:18:57):
sixty eight is known for being The year When Hall
Of famer bob gibson didn't JUST win. The era TITLE
his season era that year was one, point one two
and it turns out seven different starting pitchers FINISHED with
an era under two, for the season and the guy
who won the batting, Title that Year Hall Of, famer
carl YASTREMSKI batted three zho one and that was good
(01:19:20):
enough for. A batting crown so after that nineteen, sixty eight,
season they did in fact lower the mound from fifteen
inches to ten and it got more offense In the baseball,
and here yet we've got four days in a row
with a fair, amount of Shutouts And, the atlanta braves
on One OF the fox, tv games tonight Got a
Grand Slam, from Sean murphy beating philadelphia. Six To one
(01:19:43):
the phillies offense went four for thirty one, with fourteen
strikeouts most of those k's from The Winning pitcher Spencer
Schwellenbach and kyle tucker Is returning to. Houston this weekend
He's at a cub uniform Now. Twelve three Cubs the final,
tucker four hits, four run scored including a, three Run
homer and houston at home had been thirty one and.
(01:20:05):
Thirteen this year thank, You very Much.
Speaker 2 (01:20:07):
Steve de seger, By, The way disagrea i'm FAR from,

taking you up Till. Two Am eastern bernie Fratto Of
The bernie frado show. Will Follow, us LOVE bernie and
(01:20:57):
i know he is going to have a ton to
say on A busy obviously nba. Finals are done if,
you missed that we talked a little bit about how Things.
Ended last sunday earlier, in the show we talked a
little bit a lot of stuff we haven't. Gone to yet, jmart,
actually busy busy. Busy hour, AHEAD but yeah i want
to go BACK To. The nba draft we talked A
(01:21:18):
Lot of cooper flag. In our, one really quickly let's.
Just reset that cooper flag. Goes number one the. Discourses
have begun if you missed any, of the conversation we
talked a little bit about some of the discourse that
has already Popped Up. About cooper flag but just your
TAKES On, The nba draft and, by the way we
could get into some of the maybe draft coverage here
(01:21:41):
in about fifteen, Minutes from now but just just your
takes on, what we, saw you. Know really quickly one
thing we have not, really talked about and we're gonna
get Back to the MAVs. In a minute haven't Really Touched.
On ace bailey do you Have Any strong. Ace bailey
takes it seems to be probably the second most interesting
thing out of The Draft. Behind, cooper flag well Apparently.
Speaker 1 (01:22:00):
He's, in utah now so. That's. A positive yep. I don't,
know i mean everything that was said about him in
the last handful of days just reflects So poorly on
in my initial take was just who exactly does he
and his representation, think he is regardless of whatever talent,
He may possess this, ain't, the, look man like this
(01:22:23):
is not. What you want it's not a it's not
what A state. Like utah is it's not gonna endear.
You to them and if it's true, that you know
you reached out to a team in the top, five and,
said you know, DON'T draft me i won't report, if
you do and, you you know didn't show up for
A workout with philadelphia or. Something LIKE that like i
(01:22:44):
understand trying to. Control your situation there's a lot of
things that happen behind the scenes, during the process right,
before the draft where guys do and where agents do
try to steer guys, to, Certain DESTINATIONS right and i
read this just in the last. Day or, so agents,
also you know their money is based on, their clients'
(01:23:05):
money and so you want to steer them the bigger markets,
and bigger contracts and you want to set things up
where it's going to, help your brand just like it's going.
TO help them i just it's just. A BAD look
like i understand wanting To be in miami or wanting
to be somewhere where it's going to be more fun
perhaps for a young guy and, also the stuff but
(01:23:28):
just go. Where you're drafted you don't want this kind
of stink, on you beforehand because any if you don't
go out there and, completely ball out you're gonna get absolutely.
Mauled for this it just seems very arrogant to behave
in this Manner If, you're ACE bailey because I Don't
(01:23:48):
think ace bailey is. A household name i don't think
he is a guy whose skill set is good enough
at this stage and his repuse and his reputation is
such that he can just go out there and act
as way and it not.
Speaker 2 (01:24:01):
Actually, harm him, yeah you know so my only REAL
take is i just thought IT was a i honestly
just thought it was. A Dumb story and i'll.
Speaker 1 (01:24:09):
Tell.
Speaker 2 (01:24:10):
YOU why listen, i think, that you know if a
guy wants to and his agents obviously want to try
and dictate where he's going to, go like that is
there prerogative and they're allowed. To do that now there are.
Consequences to that it's funny you mentioned the agent getting
a commission on. The player's salary well by basically telling
(01:24:30):
everybody at, the top five we don't want to. Go
to you even the difference between pick like three and
pick like six is like nine or ten million dollars
over the course. Of A contract so i thought. IT
was weird i thought. IT was dumb i had no
real issue with them trying to dictate where he. WANTED
to go i guess where my issue was was kind
(01:24:54):
of the, coverage of IT because and i JUST think
sometimes i don't know if we're so conditioned because we
live in this player empowerment world that like, WE just,
assume i mean what? Does it Mean it doesn't and
to me it was like, It means nothing like like
HE can say i don't want, to Go there or i'm,
not GOING there or i. Won't play there at the end,
(01:25:16):
of the day he is a rookie on a rookie
contract without, any other option and so you could say
you don't want, To go somewhere but if, somebody drafts
you it's not like you're not gonna show up there's.
Nowhere to go you can't go. Back to college.
Speaker 8 (01:25:35):
Are you?
Speaker 1 (01:25:35):
Gonna?
Speaker 2 (01:25:35):
Go overseas, Well guess what jazz still have your draft rights, in,
a year, Right you know it's like it just so
it just never made. Sense to me and then it
just it got the resolution that it was always. Going
to get now it was either gonna be a team
that he planned on going to and wanted, to go to.
Or it wasn't but he, was always reporting and so
he did. Officially report today it's the end. Of The
(01:25:58):
story it it was just very uninteresting TO me because
i think he has every right to try to, dictate
the process but other teams have every, right to say,
you know what we think you're pretty good and we're
not gonna not draft you just because just because of
the fact that you say you don't want, to come,
here because again at the end, of the day there's nowhere.
Else to go but, with that said let's switch gears
(01:26:21):
back to the number, one Overall pick to cooper flag
and to yet another bigger discourse. About, this conversation okay
So j mart, in hour one we talked about the
discourse About and. A cooper flag oh guess what don't
know if you. Heard he's white we talked a lot
about that in our one and what it may or
(01:26:42):
may not mean. For his marketability, but of course, the other,
discourse of course is The fact how dallas found themselves.
In this position they made a comically terrible trade of
a generational player, entering his prime coming off of a
TRIP To, the nba finals and of course. Didn't Work
(01:27:05):
out anthony, davis gets hurt as the point you made earlier,
in the show literally the first game that he, played
for them and it does. Not work out they end
up in the draft lottery and they ended up with the.
Number one pick NOW you and i, both, think that
yeah it's a little bit sketchy how that. All played
out you know one man who doesn't think. It was
Sketchy How. About nico harrison here is what he had
(01:27:28):
to say. About, THE situation yeah i.
Speaker 13 (01:27:30):
Was extremely surprised all my all my draft prep up to,
that point, was you know as being in. The eleventh
position so that's just, but you. Know things happen fortune,
Favors the, ball so exciting exciting things.
Speaker 2 (01:27:45):
Fell our way fortune. FAVORS The, BALL j martin i
don't even need TO say what. I gotta say i'm
gonna give it right. Over To You when nico harrison
says fortune, favors the bold what do you have?
Speaker 1 (01:28:00):
To say bold stupidity, is not bold navete. Is not
bold just because you did something big doesn't mean you.
Did something bold and it's Not Even that nico harrison
didn't do something that he. Believed was right let's take
(01:28:22):
it at face and say that there was nothing shady.
About the trade there was nothing shady about anything. Was
going on nico thought he was doing what was best. For,
the franchise okay so he makes this move at this
point in time and he. DECLARES that bold i. Declare
that dumb not even if we take that, at face
value because every time he opened his mouth he made
(01:28:43):
it worse. After the fact one of the biggest things
that he, that He said where i'm, just like man
then you MUST have an iq that is smaller than
my SHOE size is i just didn't see this kind
of Backlash, Coming from, DALLAS like dude i was at
a conference about six Weeks ago in dallas and an
(01:29:05):
email was sent to us before we went. To the
conference it was not a sports conference, as ministry conference, and,
it said hey when, you're down Here don't mention Luca.
Speaker 8 (01:29:13):
In.
Speaker 1 (01:29:13):
The MAVs, WOW and, like i know it was like,
half a joke but half of it, wasn't a joke
like it clearly still. Mattered to them so Fortune, Favors the,
bold like no you did an all time ridiculous thing
that no one. Could possibly understand, after the fact every
(01:29:34):
time you opened your mouth you made, the scenario worse
and you sounded less like clued in and in the
know about anything. That was happening you seemed completely not
qualified for your job. At that point and so, you
say fortune which of course happens behind closed doors where
no one can actually see, these balls anymore. These lottery
(01:29:55):
balls but we'll just say that. This is legit and
you say fortune, favors, the, bold like no it doesn't.
Work that way you had a one point eight percent
chance to, win the lottery and somehow the basketball gods
rewarded you for something. Dumb like that that's our that's
our metric. At this point and, by the WAY and
(01:30:16):
then i want to hear what you. Have to say
he also had said later that he hoped that this,
would you know maybe make the fans hate him just a.
Little BIT less and i, was, just like dude no
one's gonna hate you less for doing the thing that
literally everyone that's ever LIKE watched an nba game or
paid attention in the last year. Would have done Like You.
(01:30:38):
Drafted cooper flag that's not a good move. On your
part it's the only move anyone was going to make
with a pulse that won. The first pick we all
knew whoever got the first pick in the draft was
going to Take To take cooper flag unless they. Traded the,
pick so no it's not gonna make them. Hate you
less they're gonna probably be a little Bit Cited, for,
(01:31:00):
cooper flag sure but all it's going to do is
make them think of you maybe a. Little bit less
but nobody's gonna give you credit for doing the thing
you're supposed to, Do like that like, all of, This,
it's like, niko just DUDE it, ain't i know you
had to, do a, presser but man just just stop
talking because it never goes well for you.
Speaker 2 (01:31:21):
When, YOU talk, Yeah i mean, I'LL be real i
don't really actually know that there is much else for
me TO add because i feel the exact same.
Speaker 1 (01:31:29):
Way you do.
Speaker 2 (01:31:31):
Fortune. Favors, the bold okay so, let's take that but
let's take that. At, FACE value okay i am all for.
Doing risky, things and again let's work under the assumption
that he believes that he, got you, know uh, uh
you know Fair value for luka, doncis no literally no
one else on. The planet does but let's work. Under
THAT assumption what i would say is anytime that you're
(01:31:56):
taking a victory lap to again to the point that
you made that the basketball god somehow rewarded you on
something that had a two percent, chance of happening it
doesn't it doesn't matter, what it is like if you
think you deserve some sort of pat on the back
because something that had a two percent chance of. Happening actually, happened,
(01:32:21):
YOU know again i don't know that there's a great
analogy off the top, of my head, but it's, like
you know you could be playing a hand of poker
and go all in and there's one card in the
deck that will win. You the hand like, it might
happen but it doesn't mean that it was the right
strategic play or it was smarter you're some sort of
(01:32:41):
genius And so like that's the part that, trips me,
up is like like you're somehow thinking that you're being
rewarded for doing something that we all just universally think
is idiotic and, so and again that's working under the
assumption that there was nothing nefarious about, how this Happened
And that nico harrison truly believes that he got Market Value.
For luka daci it's TWO things that i think most
(01:33:04):
basketball people don't believe are actually the case in either.
Speaker 1 (01:33:07):
One, OF them yeah, i mean again it's just like fortune.
Favors the, bold, it's like no you just you fell
backwards into some, kind OF luck which i put in
air quotes with my EYES closed while i said, it
OUT loud like i said, this TO you and i
have no QUALMS in saying i know some people will
(01:33:28):
say it's just completely ridiculous and over the. TOP or
whatever i just will never believe that this was on the.
UP and up i just won't like it's too perfect
for this to have worked the way. That it did
an all, time Bad decision but dallas is an incredibly
important big market. In the country fans are. Ready to
mutiny you're having guys like taken out of the. Building
(01:33:51):
for signs you're having protests. On the street people are
scratching their heads. Left and right we're on the radio
when the, trade gets made and Our news Guy steve
de seger and you and me, are, ALL like Well
i guess. Sean's got, hacked oh yeah because of how,
preposterous it was it turns. Out it's legit no one,
Can understand this and we go through this whole process
(01:34:14):
and all this, kind of stuff and then with the
a one point, Eight percent chance NICO even said i
was planning to be the. Number, eleven pick yes, so,
were we man so. So were we so, You just
this this couldn't have possibly. Worked out better but it's
not because you did something smart or did something crafty
or you just made this bold move because you're just.
(01:34:36):
This gigantic, leader, it's, like nah man like. You screwed
up you. Did Something insane anthony davis in his first
Night In a MAVs jersey looked good in the first
half and then went down and didn't play again for
the remainder. Of the season kyrie is out until. Twenty
twenty six and Somehow You land cooper flagg and your
initial response to that is to say fortune. Favors the
(01:34:57):
bold just come out there and, said, and say man,
you know what it was. A rough year i know
our fans are still trying to kind of piece together what.
All WENT down all i can say is the future
does look, bright For Us and cooper flag is really
gonna be fun to watch and we're excited to see
what he can do for us. In the future, just, Stop,
there man like don't say this and when the when the,
(01:35:19):
question gets asked do you think this is gonna make
the fans? Hate? You less, SAY you know i don't
have any control. Over the fans i'm just gonna try
to DO the best i. Can to win i'm gonna
try to DO the best i can to put a
team out there that can win. For this city, and
you know there's always going to be opinions, on both
sides and that's part. Of the, job, DON'T say well
i hope maybe it'll make them like me or hate
(01:35:41):
me a. Little bit less it's. Not, Going to man
they're still going to Be chanting fire nico because you
didn't do anything Special By. Drafting cooper flag you did,
The obvious thing like you did THE thing that, i
would say there are people that have never even Laid Eyes,
on cooper flag but if her his name enough in
the last year that they would have drafted him number one.
(01:36:05):
In This Draft, so nico harrison just just just please
might be a, really, nice man, man but this this
this whole like pr thing that you're doing not not.
A Good, thing bro like just stay out of the
public eye and just. Just retreat back let the team,
start winning again and just kind of sit casually in
(01:36:25):
your seat and watch the games and. Let's move on.
Speaker 2 (01:36:29):
Nothing else. To REALLY add and i. Stand with you
and if it makes us sound like two, tinfoil hat. Guys,
that's fine again a trade that no one can explain
of a superstar just entering his prime to the biggest market.
In the, league, and then oh, by the way, three
Months later the mavericks reward with the number one pick
(01:36:52):
with a two percent chance in a draft where many
believe that the top player is. A generational, prospect i'm
sorry it's just it's too many weird things all. Happening
at once and so if that makes us sound, tenfoil

tonight's show we have talked a ton about What happened.
On thursday NIGHT in, The Nba draft cooper flag. Goes
Number one nico harrison believes he made some incredible decision
to draft him. Number one, overall and oh, by The
Way the cooper flag discourse has kind of already gone
(01:39:17):
off the rails and hasn't even played. A GAME yet
but i do want to switch, Gears to though JAY
mart what i actually thought the biggest story was Coming
Out of wednesday night Because We knew cooper flag, was
going One We knew dylan harper Was Going, to okays
bailey what's, His story whatever the biggest story to me
(01:39:40):
unquestionably ended up being the COVERAGE Of. The nba draft,
I'LL say quickly i don't think all of it is.
The talent's fault basically everybody on that Set Except for
jay billis WAS Covering in nba finals as of what
(01:40:02):
seventy two hours before. The draft started to ask that
crew to then have AN. Opinion on Vj Edgecombe And
kaman malo watch seems a little bit, unfair to them
but it doesn't change the fact that they. Were on
air they. Seemed Completely unprepared and i'll say this for,
(01:40:22):
the first, time you know the twenty, million DOLLAR. Man,
steven a smith really seemed to. Take Some heat and.
I'll be quick i'm gonna get it. OVER to you
i am NOT someone and i. Mean this sincerely i'm
not JEALOUS. Of steven a. Make your money he. Clearly
works hard whatever you think of, the individual opinions the.
Guy works hard he shows up. Every day, everywhere you
(01:40:44):
know ready to perform. For the camera and so this
Is not a torres is Jealous, of steven A because
steven a is atop. The business thing but it, just
felt like of all the nights that you could have
given him, a night off did he need to BE on,
the nba draft yelling and screaming about guys that he clearly,
knew nothing about opinions that he was kind of pulling
(01:41:06):
out of a. You know what and it felt like
publicly it was the FIRST time that i really remember
some real pushback TO how Much Espn. Uses stephen asmith so.
Speaker 1 (01:41:16):
He was terrible he had almost no. Knowledge of anybody
he related everything to guys that are CURRENTLY in the
nba because that's the only thing that he. DOES know,
ABOUT i mean i do think he works hard because
he has eighteen. THOUSAND different jobs i don't know how
much time he's putting into each. Individual one anymore he
is stretched. Way too thin whatever you, think of him
(01:41:41):
he's everywhere in a way Where He's now kevin hart,
in my opinion he's just. He's in everything he shows
up all. Over the place he's, on the view he's,
got his podcast he Shows Up on, bill maher's show
he's doing multiple video. Deals on YouTube he's GOT this,
(01:42:02):
serious Xm Thing which michelle beadle clearly was not a.
Big fan of HE'S on, the nba Coverage He's, on
first take and there's now kind of a running Joke
Amidst like jay williams and some of the other people
on that set that he's never in studio and. Things
like that he, has made errors like forgetting like calling
(01:42:23):
out guys for their for not showing UP during the
nfl season for their teams that don't even play on,
those teams anymore like. Stuff like that like he's just,
stretched too thin and there's no possible way for him
to watch and know all of. What he's doing that's
why you get caught Up with the solitaire deal and all. These,
(01:42:43):
other deals yeah but. Here's the thing because of, who
he is right and because of the power that he
wields where he Can Get a max kellerman fired if,
he wants to or whatever it is that he, wants
to do he can. Pretty much do, at this point
he could have told them he wouldn't, do the draft
which means to me he wanted to do the draft
(01:43:03):
because he can't get, enough of himself and you're right
that it's not the talent's fault because of the situation they.
Were put in they shouldn't have been, in that position,
but they were, and as such you got an unwatchable Draft,
that was look it was already a struggle because we
(01:43:25):
just don't know enough about most, of these guys and
so you needed The frand for shilla's of the world
back in, the day Yep or certainly billis and, guys
like that to kind of break this down and tell
us what we need to. Know About them for Scilla
was for shilla right now would be even more useful
because he was always the guy that would tell you
about what was happening overseas and paid attention, to all
(01:43:46):
that and that's become so CRITICAL to. The NBA. Game
steven a smith. Could, do nothing again this is the
guy that went on a Rant about the knicks coaching
search in the MIDDLE Of the nba Draft when the
knicks didn't even have a first. Round draft pick because
that's the THING. That steven a, smith knows about and
he's the one, that's on camera and so he's going
to do. It his way it was a disservice to
(01:44:10):
the guys that, were being drafted because we learned virtually nothing.
About them whatsoever it was a testament to what sports.
Media has become, this debate culture this extreme, hot take
culture kind of. Hits its apex this shouldn't be happening.
In the draft And WE'VE. Got, stephen A Smith as
(01:44:31):
dennis miller Once Said, about james carville who looked like
a muppet washed on hot, who's? Up there irate, who's
just like what in the World Are the? Phoenix sun's
doing and all this other. Kind of stuff but, it's
just like none of this is helping us get to
Any kind of This Is the billy madison. Answer right
here this is the everyone is now dumber for having
(01:44:52):
sat here and. Listened to this it was already A
draft that HERE'S the thing i didn't EVEN know because
i didn't tune into THE draft because i knew there
was not going to be. ANY reason too i just
followed it. ON my phone i knew who was, going
number ONE and then i just kind, of followed along
and then if there was an interview cut or something that,
was WORTH seeing then i, checked that out saw what
some of, the discourse was and all this there weren't
(01:45:13):
a whole lot of trades that were particularly exciting and
all this. Kind of Stuff but steven a shouldn't be
on your draft Coverage because steven a doesn't pay attention,
to college basketball and he's certainly not paying attention. To
basketball overseas any talking point he had probably was fed
to him, by somebody else and so you just got
to be. Better than that if you're the network that's,
(01:45:33):
covering that draft you YOU. Failed the nba that One's Not,
on adam SILVER. That's on espn that was just absolutely
horrible coverage all. The way around.
Speaker 2 (01:45:42):
IT was funny i was thinking as we were prepping,
for the show, the actual solution if you Must, keep
stephen a do like YOU, do on tv put a
put a mic in or put an earbut, in his
ear and Have friend for shila just speak into the
earbud for the. Next two hours but HE'S got And
i know fred. A little bit i'm, GONNA tell myself
i DON'T know if I will because i don't know if,
you'd Appreciate it but, i'd be like but you can
(01:46:04):
only talk to him In the. Stephen a voice, so, it's,
like uh. Oh, That's funny yeah, nicole y, oh, You
know yeah colon. This, and that, YEAH you know. I
don't know i think he would get a kick, out of,
IT but no i will say that it was. Tough
ALL around although i Will. Defend steven a he wasn't
the only one who had. Some, major gafs bree do
(01:46:25):
we have the sound of the? Twelfth overall pick, If We,
do mary mack you can go ahead and. Play That
Sound the.
Speaker 9 (01:46:33):
Portland Trailblazer select Cedric Coward From.
Speaker 2 (01:46:36):
Washington state University So the Portland Trailblazers. Select colin coward Here.
Speaker 1 (01:46:46):
Shout.
Speaker 2 (01:46:47):
Out colin, coward you know started His. Career in portland
apparently he's about. To End it but i'll just say, This. Really,
quick jmart yeah like that was the metaphor. For the
Draft and, WHAT i'll say i know it's kind of funny,
and it's whatever but it's to the point that you
brought up, a second ago is that you're not. Doing
the fans you're doing the fans, of the service but
(01:47:09):
you're doing. THE players, too I Mean, imagine cedric coward
who began his CAREER as a d three player who
Then Transferred, To Eastern, washington washington, state and literally as of,
a month ago was in the transfer portal committed To
play for duke next year UNTIL his drafts doot got
(01:47:29):
so high, that, HE'S like oh i have. To go
pro and the moment that will forever be associated with
his draft moment of His Draft is milik andrews screwing.
Up his name and again It's not totally milik and and,
BY the way i screw up names on air. All
the time i'm not sitting HERE saying that i have
never made a, mistake on air, but it's like this is,
(01:47:50):
a big stage this is a big moment, for these
kids and, like you said there's. People tuning in If you're,
A blazers fan i know they, traded the pick but
If you're, A grizzlies fan i want to know. About
this guy and you HAVE people on tv who can't
even get, his name right confusing him with a radio
host That Works At. Fox SPORTS radio so i don't
know if you have anything to add before we, get
to disagre.
Speaker 1 (01:48:10):
BUT it's, just i mean, it's just like if you're gonna,
do the job if you're gonna, accept the responsibility if They,
tell you hey you're. Covering the draft you're. Doing the
draft at the least you have, you have to at
the very least make me believe. That you prepared and
that is not what we got. Here at all It's just,
not and man coming off that FINALS coverage where espn
(01:48:33):
did a, bang up job this was a bad couple of,
Weeks for them but this was. A horrible night like,
to your point this is the most important night in
the lives of a lot, of these kids right, And
their families like, in some cases this is the night
where they're families who have struggled economically are now going
to be set up in a. Completely different universe this
(01:48:55):
is supposed to be celebration, and all this and it
turns into a joke because nobody can talk about my
son because they Don't even know they don't even, know
his name they've never, watched him before they have no
idea anything. About his game and if, they did prepare
then maybe that's an even bigger indictment because again you
certainly wouldn't know it by. Watching THE coverage so i
can't defend much of this just because it was on
(01:49:18):
you to make, this not ridiculous and it just it
just it came across so amateur, and so like we don't,
care about this but we're just gonna kind of. Phone
this in you can't phone in draft coverage because people will.
See through it and.
Speaker 2 (01:49:31):
That's What happened mary mack for the people. In the back,
one More Time.
Speaker 9 (01:49:36):
The Portland Trailblazers select Cedric Coward From.
Speaker 1 (01:49:40):
Washington state University So the Portland Trailblazers.
Speaker 2 (01:49:45):
Select, colin, coward here listen we all make mistakes. Of
THIS business and I think even colin was a little bit,
embarrassed by it although he did put out a meme
of Him in a blazers jersey later, in THE night
so i don't know how. Embarrassed He was malik andrews
is great at, what she does but that is a
metaphor for what We saw On wednesday. And Thursday Night
(01:50:06):
fox sports Radio Era towards jacon.
Speaker 1 (01:50:08):
Cower have been really upset by the way if he,
started his career if He, was in portland that's a
guy that. Likes, big cities well he Might have actually ace.
Baileyed that situation i'll.
Speaker 2 (01:50:20):
Tell you what let's uh fat fun at the expense
of the other, Network ONE guy, like i said never,
Mails it In, steve de? Sager what's trending i've never
heard you mess up a name in the eight years I've.
Speaker 9 (01:50:32):
Been, With, no no actually your point is a good
one to be taken by all of us When you're on,
live this much you will make a mistake because. We're
all human, it.
Speaker 1 (01:50:43):
For me it will.
Speaker 9 (01:50:45):
Happen in the future to.
Speaker 1 (01:50:47):
All.
Speaker 9 (01:50:47):
Of us again, by the way if It Was actually,
colin cowhard taken he would Have gone to chicago Like.
The real colin that would have. Been the move and
when you mentioned the fortune, FAVORS the bold i hadn't.
Speaker 2 (01:50:59):
Heard that, quote oh yeah.
Speaker 9 (01:51:00):
It's a thing the ABSOLUTE first thing i thought of
was those cryptocurrency ads from a, few years ago which,
let's just say did, not go well Wasn't It, With Matt,
Damon larry, David Shaquille, O'Neill tom, brady et. Cetera et
cetera because there were billions of dollars in losses eventually,
from that thing and the guy who founded the place
and based the Company and the bahamas wound up getting.
(01:51:23):
Sentenced to prison and it was actually in the news
This month that, shaquille O'Neill individually as a result, of
those ads is going to have to pay one point
eight million dollars to settle. A class action.
Speaker 1 (01:51:35):
We'll Talk about sam bankman for.
Speaker 10 (01:51:37):
You.
Speaker 9 (01:51:37):
To hear yes so it's the lesson for all of
us kids is that fortune doesn't always. Favor the bold
recklessness certainly does not always favor, you.
Speaker 2 (01:51:48):
No, company but yeah but maybe not. Some Other Guys
but ernico rrison. Recklessness.
Speaker 9 (01:51:54):
Favored, him yeah yeah he's looking for anything to favor him.
At this Point we Had box. In anaheim tonight it

Speaker 9 (01:52:08):

assume if he was, in the ring maybe he could
have done better than nine, rounds to one which was

We go, off air all right it's like four really
(01:56:18):
good topics that we didn't even have a chance, to
get To, today j mart unfortunately most of them probably
need more than like the three. Minutes That we have
so i'll just be quick ON this one because I
think you and i were a little bit, ahead on
This One. Which is KEVIN durant you and i were saying,
(01:56:39):
two three weeks ago, like all TIME. Great, not anti
kd guys but does he really move the needle that
much if you're trying. To, trade for Him well obviously
last sunday he Ends Up. As A houston rocket, and
i actually was for, once in my life actually sort
(01:56:59):
of proud of the of the media and the, discourses
THAT came out because i felt like by the time we,
got to the trade it felt like most people were
kind of where we had, been two weeks, prior, which
is like again, an all time great, but let the
record show has had six different coaches, the last six
years has not made it out of the second round
(01:57:24):
of the Playoffs Since he left golden, state in twenty
nineteen and you're adding an all time great that just
isn't at the peak. OF his powers anymore i feel
like by the time we actually Got, the trade on
sunday that, is where not everybody but it felt Like,
Most PEOPLE.
Speaker 1 (01:57:40):
Were, YEAH and i mean i think this is where.
You need to be. And here's the thing he's going
to a coach this time that's kind, of, a mad
guy right a guy that has one big and a team.
That is already winning so if, this thing doesn't work
the stink is largely going. TO be, on, Him I
think yeah and i think that's going to be about
(01:58:01):
The End of, the kevin durant experiment or at least.
It's going to be he's going to be in that
territory where there's just not going to be a lot
of people that are going to want. To bring that
in and hopefully he knows that because we know we
can what he can still. Do, as a baller now
if his health deteriorates or whatever like that and he's not,
able to stay healthy that's a bit. Of a different
issue BUT that's another thing i will say In, TERMS
(01:58:23):
of the rockets i didn't think they had to give
up the world, to MAKE this happen so i can
see why. You would do it they're one of, the,
only teams where yeah maybe he's a guy that might
be able to get you over the hump because you
already have A lot there and i don't think you
had to get rid of everything in your core. To
pull this off but if this, does NOT work out
then i think that largely the Discussions Of positivity surrounding
(01:58:48):
kevin durant are.
Speaker 4 (01:58:49):
Going.
Speaker 2 (01:58:49):
To, Be OVER yeah no and, i think you KNOW
it's funny because i think this was the one spot that.
Actually did make sense, nice pieces around him and again
you didn't have to give up a. TON to, Get
Him i know jalen green's kind, of an emerging Guy.
But you keep tom but.
Speaker 1 (01:59:05):
He's, kind OF inconsistent too and i think he was
starting to kind of fall out of favor a bit. During,
THE playoff run.
Speaker 2 (01:59:12):
No i don't disagree and the one thing too is
they just. Very clearly needed scoring but the, COUNTER to,
THAT is i mean i don't think They're. BETTER than
the thunder i don't think They're. Better than, the nuggets
you know Maybe, better than The lakers although the lakers
are obviously going to make. Another move or, two so,
(01:59:34):
it's just you know. It's one of those it felt.
BIG in the moment i don't know, how big, IT is.
Speaker 1 (01:59:41):
But.
Speaker 2 (01:59:41):
Yeah i don't know it just it was just an
interesting thing to kind of follow over, the last you know,
ten days or so. Is that all unfolded so.
Speaker 1 (01:59:48):
It was about the one place he could go where
it made. Some, Degree of sense yes.
Speaker 2 (01:59:52):
I'll say this too this might be a. Topic for
next week this second apron thing, is wild because everybody
he's blowing, Up everything right now we're not gonna have
a Chance To talk to aaron holiday some of the
trades that Have happened that the celtics basically, punting on next.
Season resetting their core it's an INTERESTING time in The,
nba thunder or champs but there's a lot of. Other
(02:00:15):
stuff going on the good news is we're gonna get
to all of, it at some point. Obviously not next
week it sounds like. YOU'RE gonna be, out I knew
that BUT i forgot and i will. Be out as
Well so probably, a spaniard plank production but we gotta.
