Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, it's Niels Vedre.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
You're listening to kfi EM six forty the four Purport
on demand on the iHeartRadio app. So I come in
barreling in and because I'm helping out on the Haunted
House for my son's elementary school and it's my first
year doing it, and I'm just trying to gather my

(00:21):
thoughts a lot of team of really incredible people. And
you gotta love La because it's like you're not dealing
with your average your average team of volunteers. They're like
lighting people and grips and all this from the industry,
So very cool. But I was focused on that and
lost focus at the time. Then I come in and Kayla,

(00:42):
lovely Miss Kayla, my producer goes, God, I'm having a
weird week and it's a weird day, and I got
a weird vibe and I'm like, oh, well, I guess
we're all kind of in that thing. And then I
can't get my footing at the beginning of the show.
What kind of professional is that?

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Right? You're the most professional now, it's just being real.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
So yeah, so you know what if you think there's
I've always I always laugh at people thinking it's fancy
what we do or something. You know, we most of
us have multiple jobs everything, and it's like, you know,
we live the exact same life. You live the exact
you know, running around trying to get to work. It's
just when we get to work late, it's like, oh,

(01:24):
it's just weird. AnyWho, I am looking very forward to
today's show, but I want normally would start with Technique
of the Week. Please indulge me if you will, I
promise you We're gonna We're giving away Disney tickets later,
so I mean, there is reason to listen. We're gonna
give have your chance to win a four pack of
one day one park tickets to the Disneyland Resort. I'll

(01:44):
be giving those away later on in the program. So
there's there is all that. But I had such an
incredible experience with the Union Rescue Mission and those of
you that know that, Amy King and I went over
the edge yesterday at the Hilton Universal in Universal City
there right off of the one on one, which.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Was really bizarre, just bizarre.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
I know Amy's gonna share with you on wake Up
Call next week. For sure, I'll share with you a
little bit about what I did and normally we would
be technique of the week here and if you just
indulge me. For those of you who care, it was
just a fascinating experience. And I also just want to
thank those of you that donated, and donation is still open.

(02:32):
You can go to at fork Reporter on my Instagram,
and I encourage you to do that even if you
don't want to donate or anything, because I have a
lot of fun connecting with you there with memes and
the like. At fork Reporter on Instagram and I pinned
it up. You can see the video, the pre video
when I first looked over the edge weeks ago when
we were talking about doing this, and I'll post some

(02:55):
stuff today because I got videos and shots. My wife
shot some video of me coming down. It was an
interesting experience. But for those of you who donated, those
of you who feel in your heart or feel moved
or led to donate, Union Rescue Mission is amazing. There
is a lot of complaints that I have about the
homeless situation here in Los Angeles in the Southland, and

(03:19):
I have although I think Mayor Bass has cleaned up
some areas I know she has in my neighborhood, but
there's a lot to be done, and there's a lot
of red tape in garbage that goes with it. One
of the things is Housing First, I think, is the initiative,
which means that legally, to get money from the government,

(03:45):
you have to be willing to say no to drug
or you have to be willing to say yes to
drugs and alcohol.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
And an Union rescue mission says no to that.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
They said that that's the first step to getting better
and getting off the streets is breaking that cycle of addiction.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
So the government gives them no money.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
That may change, there are laws and things that might
come up to change that, but right now that is
the law that government and goes to places that will
let people use It's Housing first is just we've got
to get them off the streets. To me, that's how
I cleaned my room when I was twelve, you know,
shove everything in the closet and will pretend that it's okay.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
That's the reality. So I love what they do.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
I've fallen in love with the organization so much that
they have become part of my monthly donation. And it's
not like I'm you know, tearing down the house. It's
fifty bucks a month. I'll be honest with you, that's
what I'm donating to them. And then I gave a
chunk for this event as well, because I really believed
in what they're doing. They showed me their math and

(04:53):
I liked it. They showed me their math and they said,
this is how we do it. So I was down
to do this and they partnered with iHeart and that's
how I learned about them. So I love the fact
that they're really doing things and making a difference. Now
it may seem like a dent, but you know what,

(05:13):
if you get one person off the street, I know
that doesn't solve our problem as people here in LA
with the homeless issue, but what it does is it
solves that person's issue, and it shows by doing that,
it shows that there is a path. And when you
see progress and you see a path, then that is

(05:34):
a positive thing to me. So that just help one concept.
I know everybody rolls their eyes my vote doesn't count,
or I can't do anything, or my money doesn't go anywhere.
Eighty six cents on the dollar goes to helping at
Union Rescue Mission.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
So that's what it was for me.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Again, you can go to my Instagram at Folk Reporter
and there's a link in bio and you can also
look at the video that I did previously. I'll put
new ones up of the actual jump from yesterday. But
you can also go to just help and the number
one Just help one dot org. Just help one dot org.
You'll see on that page the iHeart Media Team. Click

(06:17):
on that and you'll see probably an icon for me.
You click on the team, you're gonna see Amy up there.
You're gonna see me up there. Some of our FM folks.
We beat the pulp out of our FM teams. And
all that says to me is how incredible you guys
are just amazing that you guys took the time and

(06:37):
the money and I don't care how much it is,
the fact that you donated humbles me almost to tears.
I really, I was so blown away that you know,
the just rooting for us, Amy, Neil, you know, be safe,
have a great time, or you know, I love your shows.
So many of you said thank you for what you do.

(06:58):
And I got to tell you the fact that you
know the fact that I get on the air every
Saturday and Monday through Friday on handle show just to
talk to you about things and to connect with you.
The fact that means anything to you stupid joke at
the beginning of the show, when we do them, whatever

(07:18):
it is, and the fact that it means anything to
you and you take the time to let us into
your house means a lot. So when you say those things,
and you know, I know a lot of us are
cynical on the station, me included, but it does mean
a lot.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
To me.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
It means a lot, and it was just an overwhelming experience.
I'll tell you a little bout for those of you
Ori insted, I'll tell you more about the jump and
the physical the physical things that go on doing something
like that when it's not your norm. When we come back,
it is the forok report believe it or not doing
something just a tiny bit different between we get before

(07:53):
we get into food, talking about those that don't have food,
that don't have a home, and that are looking for
those things and frustrated as I am. I found that
the Union Rescue Mission has a path and I support
those that are willing to do it. If we get
so cynical, we don't applause those that do it right,
and we only get angry at those that do it wrong.
Nothing gets solved. So bear with me one more segment.

(08:16):
I'll tell you about what the experience was when we return.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
You're listening to the Fork Report with Nil Savedra on
demand from KFI AM six forty.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
How you doing, Happy Saturday to you? A weird vibe
going on here. Everybody's laughing about how it's kind of
a weird vibe in the studio today. So I apologize
that we were. Had Robin come to me and say, Okay,
you've got a marongo spot here, and I'm like, oh
my gosh, I don't even have the marongo stuff in
front of me.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
I need to get my bearings.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Anyways, crazy, but we have a lot to get to today,
a very packed show. I was going to get into
seasoning pans and skillets and things like that. Had if
someone call me out on Gary and Shannon's show, and
God bless him, he seems like the nicest guy in
the world, but I believe he was incorrect talking about no,

(09:10):
you've got to do it with bacon fat.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
They didn't even have.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
Processed oils back there, or refined oils back then. Well,
you know that's how grandma's did it. Well, my grandma
probably went to the bathroom in an outhouse too, just
because something was done that way in the past. Nowadays
we do have access to neutral oils and the like,
and bacon is not a neutral oil. Not to mention
that if you have anybody who is a vegan out

(09:35):
of respect, and I know I hear the eye rolls
and all of that. But anyways, I will get into
that next week or beyond because I have a lot
of views on it, but for some reason, it's when
it comes to guys and grilling and seasoning, everybody wants
to jump in. I'm about the science, not about the
emotion of it, and there is science to it, and

(09:57):
what you're actually doing that trans sends the emotion of
this is how it's always been done. So I'll get
into that next week with you. Right now, I'm talking about,
you know, jumping off the building for the United Rescue
or the Union Rescue Mission mission. Rather yesterday, they're doing
it today again. So if you're driving on the one
to one in Universal City and you see people going
over the edge, that's what they're doing. So yesterday at

(10:20):
around eleven o'clock or whatever, I get there at ten,
they harnessed me up. And the interesting thing is, I
have what my family and I all refer to as
our you know, our fanny pack. It's your kidney. They
don't put when you get a kidney transplant. And out
of seven kids, five of us have this disease. It's genetic,

(10:44):
and so four of us now have had transplants. My
youngest brother, Kirk, just had both of his kidneys removed.
They're so sickly, so he has no kidney. If you're
somebody who whoever wants, you know, feels moved to donate
a kidney or something, and that poor bastard is has
been dealing with a lot AnyWho.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
So it's upfront.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
The kidney's upfront, and the harness just accentuated it, so
you see it. So one side of my belly is
different than the other side, book big, but it's it
was it accentuated that, and I was like, oh, well
that's great, And so they harness you up. These guys
are pros. The guys and gals that do this were
so so good at what they do making you feel safe,

(11:31):
and then you do they escort you to the top
of this twenty five story building the Hilton in Universal
right there by Universal Studios, and they go, okay, now
put one foot over and then the other footover. And
then they said, you're going to feel a tightness in
the rope. When you feel that, sit down, And they

(11:53):
don't mean sit down on a ledge, they mean sit
down over the edge of the building. Very unnatural. I've
bungee jumped before. I'm deathly afraid of heights, but I feel,
you know, that's what life's about, push through things, experience
things right, and it's for a great cause. So I go,
you know, just do it, and you sit and I

(12:16):
just remember hearing everything and just being up there, and
you could hear cars honking, you could hear cops pulling people.
We're pulling people over and it was fascinating. But how
much the body reacts one way because I'm holding onto things,

(12:36):
and the guy goes, there are no muscles big enough
for you to take care of yourself in this situation.
It is all about the ropes. And the sooner you
get that through your mind, the sooner you'll enjoy it.
Because then you're like, it's all in the ropes and
the gearing. There's nothing you can do you could change
the speed and you could slow yourself down a little

(12:56):
bit with the gears and things like that, but really
the ropes are doing so once you get that in
your mind, it helps you understand, you know what's happening.
Plus there's another unnerving experience, and that is your body
gets further away from the building as you get lower,
So at first your feet are touching the building and
you're kind of pushing off a little bit. Then all

(13:17):
of a sudden you're away from the building, just by
the way the crank is and gravity and everything else is.
It's really weird. So it was a neat experience. Thank
you to all of you who donated. Thank you to
people who came out. My wife and my boy were
out there cheering me on. My poor little boy doesn't

(13:38):
feel well, and he was like.

Speaker 1 (13:40):
My mom my mom. His mom.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
My wife said he could come to see it if
they went back home, and so he came and saw
his dad go down the side of a building. And
it is just the most unnatural thing you will ever do.
They make you feel very safe, and I was safe.
I wouldn't do it if I wasn't. But I got
to tell you, if you get a chance to do

(14:02):
that next year.

Speaker 1 (14:05):
With us. You've got to try it.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
It's pretty fascinating and I'm looking forward to doing it again.
I have found out that it's not easy to look
cool doing it like they do in the movies, because
you're trying not to pee yourself. But and I think
I probably I didn't look down or around until I
was halfway down the building. I went so fast it
started burning my gloves. The guy you have a radio

(14:28):
on you and they're telling you, who whoa, whoa whoa,
you're going too fast. And I was cranking and I
had gloves on everything. I was cranking because I'm like,
what goes up must come down. I'm going to go
down and it'll click your safety harness if you go
too fast to slow you down, right, So I had
to unclick that and it was really deep. But it's
a great experience. And thank you to those of you

(14:50):
who cheered Amy on and cheered me on and supported
the Union rescue mission. It was an experience I will
never forget, and I won't forget the generosity of you
and the kindness of you as well.

Speaker 1 (15:03):
That's it.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
We'll get started with the show, the real show. When
we come back, so go nowhere.

Speaker 4 (15:09):
You're listening to The Fork Report with Nil Sevedra on
demand from KFI AM six forty.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
Hey, Happy Saturday to you. A beautiful day. We're all
running around like chickens with our.

Speaker 1 (15:21):
Heads cut off over here.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
It's total chaos because you know what life happens. But
I appreciate you tuning in and hanging out with us
today until five o'clock. A great program stacked with a
lot of neat people. So thanks for hanging out. Next Saturday,
we're gonna be live in Encino at the Oh Kayla,

(15:43):
did I not?

Speaker 1 (15:43):
Did you you knew?

Speaker 2 (15:45):
Yeah, We're gonna be at Biqito, Moss and Encino broadcasting
live next Saturday. Then after that the Manhattan Beach Food
and Wine Festival. I know, we got a lot. I
can't keep track of any of this, any of it.
We're gonna be giving away some Disney tickets. We're gonna
give away a family four pack of one day, one

(16:08):
park tickets to the Disneyland Resort. Why because it's Halloween
time and the Disney Resort is popping off like they
always do. KFIM six forty We all want to give
you a chance to experience the frightful fun at the
happiest Halloween there. They brought fiendishly tasty treats, thrills for
one and all, and boo to full decor to both

(16:29):
Disney California Adventure Park and Disneyland Park.

Speaker 1 (16:32):
Don't mock me now through.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
October thirty first, They've always got stuff going on there,
so keep listening. We'll give those away coming up in
just a little bit. Right now, I want to introduce
you to somebody who I've primarily communicated with via email.
I think we probably have each other's numbers as well,
but I don't know that we've ever chatted once or twice.
Maybe her name is Shida Purat.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
Is that okay? Excellent? And she's with Bargain Fair.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
Bargain Fair is on Pinko and Robertson in LA and
I have been going to it since I can remember
when it was in the Fairfax district on Fairfax. It
is one of the most beloved one off shop. This
is not a chain or anything like that. This is

(17:21):
owned by you, correctly in you and your family and
staff run.

Speaker 3 (17:24):
It right exactly.

Speaker 2 (17:26):
Explain to everybody what a kitchen supply story is I
know it sounds simple, but you have more things than
most people would assume.

Speaker 3 (17:34):
So we started the business about forty five years ago.
My father started it and I joined about thirty years
ago holping came out, and I'm still there. We do
cater a lot of restaurants, caterings, event planners, households and
any chefs and anyone who.

Speaker 1 (17:53):
Loves to cook.

Speaker 3 (17:56):
We do have a plates, glass where silverware, cook where candles,
anything you need to bake, anything you need to entertain,
serving pieces. So we have attracted a lot of customers
from different walks of life. Homes, parties, weddings, you just

(18:22):
name it.

Speaker 2 (18:22):
And I know there's other change out there, and we
support everybody. You know, the community has enough for everyone.
But I love the longevity of Bargain Fair. It's beloved
and has been talked about in the food in food
and culinary circles for as long as I can remember,
long before I even started this show. And one of
the things I've talked about on the air many times,

(18:43):
and it comes up during the holidays. I've talked about
how you can go to Bargain Fair and the stoneware
there is it's all white. You know, you have a
lot of it. You have black and things like that.
But I said, it's so easy to replace. So I
have many of your plates and stemware and things like

(19:04):
that in my home, and if I break one, I
know I can get something that looks almost exactly like it,
so I never have to worry when we have Thanksgiving.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
I have told people to go out there in the
LA area. You've got to check it out.

Speaker 2 (19:16):
If you want to come for a day trip and
go check out parts of Los Angeles, Bargain Fair should
be on your list if you're a foodie or you're
looking for anything that deals with serving or gosh, anything
like that. So it's one of those places that I
can I'm like a kid. I can stay there all
day and look around at the different things you have.

(19:37):
But I was sad to hear that times have you know,
after forty five years or so, times have gotten tough.
You had to move out of your original location. They've
pretty much gutted that street there in Fairfax.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
Yes, do you know what's going up there? Or they
were kind of having.

Speaker 3 (19:53):
Everybody so apparently they were. They asked, they forced us
to get out. Was in a very short period of time,
and they got it out. They were supposed to make
condos on the top and retail at the bottom, but
apparently they're having some problems.

Speaker 2 (20:10):
Right because it's kind of left in it. It looks
like they've dug They've torn some things down. There was
a movie theater there that had been there for a
long time that the marquee I think I saw it
was still there.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
Is a landmark, so they had to keep the facade
of the building. But I think they found water underneath everything,
so they don't know what they have to do.

Speaker 1 (20:31):
Oh wow, they should have stuck with bargain Fair.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
I think it was a huge move. It was very
difficult to move all that items, ten thousand items. You've
been there forever and we've been there forever, and to
set up a new space with new aisles where to
put things. But honestly, within twenty four hours to thirty
six hours the move was done. We're all set up.
It's a new location and busier, more family oriented. We're

(21:01):
happy to be there. But right now, I think with
the economy and what's going on, I think it's a
little bit of a slowdown.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
I would say, yeah, and we've seen a lot of
things going on with restaurants and the like as well,
so that's part of your business as well. We come back,
we'll talk more because not only do if you've been
incredibly sweet to me anytime I've needed anything, and long
even before I had this show, that I would go
in there for things for my family, because I have

(21:33):
a big family, and you do thanksgiving up my house
and I trust me, I'm going to need four gravy
boats and you know, twenty four plates and everything else,
and I could just in one stop get everything in
one location. We of course, we're talking about bargain Fair,
and we're talking with Shida Parat Parat there at bargain

(21:53):
Fair and we'll come back and talk more with her.
You can find out more at its bargainfair dot com.
Right okay, I'm trying to make sure that it doesn't
have any spaces or anything. Just Bargainfair dot com, Bargainfair
dot com and bargain Fair Underscore La on Instagram. Bargain
Fair Underscore La on Instagram. They are a worthy follower,

(22:18):
follow to follow and check them out. We'll talk more
when we come back. You've been listening to the Fork Report,
you can always hear us live on kf I Am
six forty two to five pm on Saturday and anytime
on demand on the iHeartRadio Apple. Neil Savadra here with
you on the Fork Report, and I'm talking to someone
you should know. If you love cooking at home, Eve,

(22:40):
you have a restaurant. If you're a bartender, you should know.
Shada Shada is with Bargain Fairs. It's family owned and operated.
They're on Pico and Robertson in Los Angeles. You can
find them on social media. Go to bargain Fair Underscore La,
bargain Fair Underscore La, and they're a kitchen and restaurants

(23:02):
supply place. But I will tell you that when you go,
you're going to be addicted for one because I've taken
many friends there, bartender friends, chefs. If you don't know
about it, you got to find out about it. And
if you're a chef that does know about it, let
people know that they moved. Their bargain Fair is now

(23:24):
on Robertson, Robertson and Pico and it's the same great
place with all the great buys.

Speaker 1 (23:33):
You will freak out at the true bargains, no pun intended.
And so I was.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
Really bummed to hear that the move that was forced
from your original location. You've been around for over forty years.
It's really bummed to hear that things were getting a
little tough. So I am from the mountaintops screaming that
you've got to learn about bargain Fair. With the holidays
coming up, you want to be to get you know,

(24:01):
inexpensive flatware, your plates.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
Anything like that. It is so great.

Speaker 2 (24:08):
And sometimes when I feel like, oh, I want to
cook Asian tonight, I look around, I'm like, I don't
want to put it on a round plate. I want
to put it in a triangle dish or a square dish.
I know I can go to bargain Fair and find
those things. So that's my that's my soap box about
the service that I've received from Shadea, the love that

(24:28):
I received and attentiveness there. You know, what do you
want to highlight? What do you want to tell people
about bargain Fair.

Speaker 3 (24:42):
Bargain Fare is a small store with over ten thousand items.
You can do all your shopping within twenty minutes under
one roof. If you need cookware, you need plates, you
need that wine glass, a romantic dinner. We have wine

(25:05):
glasses from dollar ninety nine. We have wine glasses twenty dollars.
A piece of fancy you want to be or how basic.
You can always find anything you need at bargain Fair.
We are a small store, a few number of people
working there, but we give all our love, as Nil says,
and attention to the customer and we want to make

(25:26):
their event special.

Speaker 2 (25:29):
And for me, you always have and something I know
we're coming out of summer quote unquote because it's always
summer in southern California. One of the things that I
love is melomine or acrylic or they have and it
blows people away all the time. If I'm serving people
in your acrylic glasses, whether I'm serving a drink up

(25:49):
in a cocktail, is serving it in a cocktail glass
or serving it up in a martini glass or something.
And then they lift it up and they go, oh,
this isn't glass. I go, no, it's a crylic. Because
we're out by the pool and stuff, I don't want
it to break. The different supplies and things you have.
People may not think about, but when they go there,
they'll go, oh my gosh, this will be great.

Speaker 1 (26:09):
By the pool.

Speaker 2 (26:09):
It looks like glass, but it's not going to break
and it's not going to cause any problems or just
in the yard and things like that. So I know
we only had a limited time today, but I just
wanted to make sure that people learned about who you
guys are.

Speaker 1 (26:23):
Again.

Speaker 2 (26:24):
Bargain Fair underscore La on Instagram is where you will
find them as far as finding I mean, anybody that
knows Los Angeles and the restaurant scene has heard of
bargain Fair. The thing is, we can't let them fall
by the wayside. It's one thing, you know, because then
we hear, oh they're no longer around anymore. Oh I

(26:47):
love them? Yeah, Well, when was the last time you
spent your money there? When it was last time you
went in? Popped your head in to look for something?
And it's Bargainfair dot com, Bargainfair dot com, bargainfair dot com.
Please check them out and when you go see them,
it's not a paid ad or anything. Just tell them
that you heard her on the show on the station

(27:09):
and that you're there to support her, because I got
to tell you, even if you don't buy anything, even
if you walk through and just check it out. Businesses,
especially small businesses love to know that you're out there
just supporting them, even if it's just a look and see.
If there's something you need, I will tell you it's
pretty cool. I've found things like when I'm doing buffet style,

(27:29):
you have the little buffet note hard card holders that
you have waited and you can put though this is
you know, goolash or.

Speaker 1 (27:36):
Whatever it is.

Speaker 2 (27:37):
So there's there's just so much there and I really
wish you the best. You and I have communicated for
a long time.

Speaker 4 (27:43):
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (27:43):
I am very honored and humbled by being a guest
on your show. Thank you so much for having me.

Speaker 2 (27:49):
Let's not make it so long in between. Definitely, let's
get you on before the holidays and talk about some
of the things there. And that's they will treat you right.
You say that you heard about here on KFI, they
will treat you right.

Speaker 1 (28:02):
Thanks so much. And it's a pleasure to meet your
son as well. Handsome kid. Look at that, thank you.
He looks like trouble.

Speaker 3 (28:09):
No, not really trouble.

Speaker 1 (28:10):
I mean lock lock.

Speaker 2 (28:12):
Up the ladies, alrighty, but goodness, see you. Thank you
so much, my friend.
