Have you tried the latest trend on Instagram or TikTok
that's trying to help with your bloat, your constipation, all
of the gut issues, and you just don't know what
to do. You're desperate, and that's why all of these
things are trending and they're the latest fad. I just
did a thing on internal cleansing that just is a
(00:52):
completely false thing that you should never try. So we're
going to get into the myths and the real root
causes of gut health today. Welcome to Accelerated Health with
Sarah Banta, the podcast that gets straight to what works.
I'm Sarah, certified natural and nutritionist, founder of Accelerated Health Products,
(01:15):
and we cut through the noise here bring you real strategies,
powerful supplements, and natural solutions to help your body detos,
boost your energy, balance your hormones, get rid of those
unexplained symptoms. And I'm super excited to have our guest
on today. She is doctor Kate Davis, a functional medicine
(01:37):
and functional neurologic neurology sorry practitioner whose personal health journey
fuels are mission like all of us, and doctor Kate,
I'm going to have you introduce yourself and tell people
why you are so passionate about what we are talking
about today. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Well, first of all, I want to say thank you
Sarah for having me on the podcast. Yeah, I'm really
excited to, you know, share this message because it is
so important. And I know you talk, you know a
lot about nutrition and real healing and you know, toxins
in our environment and all that stuff. That's just so
it's such a popular topic now, and I just want
to start by kind of briefly sharing my story just
(02:16):
because you know, that's how I got into this space,
like into gut health, into you know, really helping people,
you know, get to the root cause, like you said,
of getting to the real issue of why they're struggling
with bloating, why they're struggling with constipation or ibs or
acid reflux or any of a number of other issues.
And so my own journey actually started, you know when
(02:37):
I was twenty four. I started having really chronic constipation
and bloating issues and severe stomach pain, and you know,
I went to the doctor for these issues, and they
gave me two terrible options. You know, they said, hey,
you can take this drug for the rest of your
life that has a side effect of permanent facial twitches,
or you can get your intestines removed. And I was like, no,
thank you. I'm going to go find someone else who
(02:58):
can help me. And you know, I was really blessed
to find this practitioner, a chiropractor who had a background
and massage, who actually did this mile fascil release in
my abdomen, and I swear I lost like ten pounds
that night. I was like, what in the head? Cause
I went thirteen days without a single bowel movement. I
was on MI relax for eleven of those days. If
anyone's ever dealt with constipation, who's listening to this podcast?
(03:21):
I feel you, Like, I know how much of a
struggle it is to you know, not be able to
go to the bathroom and to just feel like you
can't even eat small amounts of food, and to just
be extremely bloated and uncomfortable and you know, I was
just miserable at that time. I was twenty four, I
was young, I was a former D one athlete. I
was someone that you would look at and think, there's
no way she could be sick, you know, because I
looked like a vision of health, and I think so
(03:43):
many people kind of deal with that. But yeah, after
that one visit, you know, I was able to go
to the bathroom multiple times that night. It was life
changing for anyone who's ever dealt with constipation, you know
that feeling. But but yeah, that kind of started my journey.
And that's why I'm so passionate about gut health because
I remember being there. I remember being so sick, wondering
why everyone around me was doing fine. I was young,
(04:03):
I was healthy. It didn't make any sense, and you know,
I was given terrible options by a GI doctor. And
I know a lot of people have you know, been
through that where they're like, well, I don't want to
go on a drug or have my intestines removed or
you know, your gallbladder removed, or whatever other options they
kind of give you. And you know, after that, I
completely overhauled my diet, tried paleo gluten free dairy free
for about a decade, and as long as I stuck
(04:25):
to that really strict diet, nothing ever went wrong. But
every time I strayed out of it, you know, even
eight nine years into this diet, I would feel terrible again.
All my gut symptoms would start coming back. And so
there really was this deeper underlying issue that had never
been addressed. And you know, I had a really stressful
life event happen and it brought back all the gut issues.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
I know, you talk a lot about stress on your podcast,
about how much it really affects your overall health, and
all my issues came back and they were actually worse
than they were when I was twenty four. You know,
I was on the verge of an autoimmune disease. My
joints were swalling up for no reason. You know, I
had worse gut issues and energy and huge fatigue dips
and all this stuff going on. And luckily enough, my
friend was in town who's a functional medicine doctor, and
(05:08):
she was like, Hey, we've got to do some testing
because it just doesn't make sense. And so, you know,
testing revealed a massive parasite infection that was one of
the biggest things that popped up. It's also one of
the biggest questions I get asked on on Instagram because
that was my story, and I know you probably get
that question a lot too, because that was your story
as well. But I had a lot of other stuff
going on. You guys, it wasn't just parasites, so you
have to kind of look at that full picture. But
(05:30):
after I passed a three foot long parasite, yeah, three
feet long, absolutely enormous, and hundreds of other ones, all
my symptoms went away. You know, I even lost like
twenty pounds. I think it was just inflammation. My energy
was like better than it had ever been. I didn't
feel the need for coffee or caffeine anymore. All my
bloating went away. I started going to the bathroom two
to three times a day, which I'd never done my
(05:52):
entire life, you know, even when I had a relatively
healthy gut as a child, you know, where you think
that going once a day is good for you. But yeah,
ever since then, I've been able to kind of use
that experience and all the knowledge I've gained from the
to help you know, hundreds of women heal from chronic
gut issues.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Well, there's so many things that you just touched on
that's hitting home with me. I think our story is
pretty much the same. I went to the GI doctor,
tubes down up me, around me, and they're like, oh,
go take some metamucil, and I'm thinking I've already write that. Yeah,
you give me no answers. And that's when I dove
into natural medicine and found my mentor who helps to
(06:28):
formulate our supplements. But the stress piece too, You have
to think about if you're stressed and you're being chased
by a tiger, does your body care about pooping? No,
doesn't care about You're not gonna You're not in a
prime position to rest and digest, so everything's going to
be screwed up. And that is huge. And over fifty
(06:50):
percent of women struggle with constipation. It's funny with me
and my best friends. Every day, Have you pooped today?
Have you pooped today? It's common topic because it's so important,
and if you're not pooping, you are recycling those toxins
over and over and the bad estrogens that's causing the
unexplained wa gain, causing the lymphatic puffiness and parasites. So
(07:15):
I had doctor Olivia on my show for those who
are interested, and she said to me, anyone with a
parasitic infection typically has a parasitic relationship in their life
and that at home. Because it was like, wow, yes
I did, and when I released all the parasites we
(07:37):
talk about they are the king of the kingdom. They
control everything. They control your brain, they control your nervous system.
I mean, I know when I went through mine, I
couldn't sleep. I felt like my nerves were on fire.
I felt like I just I was not my calm,
stable self whatsoever. I mean, they literally take over your
body and they hide all the heavy metals and the
(08:00):
and the viruses and the other things. So there's so
much underneath going on until you really address the root problem.
And that's why I love your story. So when people
are on social media and they're seeing these like quick fixes,
and like I was just mentioning this internal cleansing thing
(08:23):
that was going viral on TikTok, looking at it, going
that does nothing Like what where are these myths or
these trends going wrong?
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Yeah, it's a great question. I think what you're talking
about is that episode you did on people who get
like the plasma paresis and like pulling toxins out of
their blood? Is that what you're talking about?
Speaker 2 (08:44):
No, there's another one. There's another one.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
Okay, there's another one.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
But there's that one too. I like, you don't need
to spend tens of thousands of dollars to heal your body. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Yeah, And it's really not as complicated as people make
it seem, you know. Granted, if you are in a
state like I was, you know, like a decade of problems,
like you're, you're gonna need a little more work, you know.
And those are the people I work with, are the
ones who have They've tried diet, they've tried supplements. It's
not helping. And the reason for that is if your
gut lining is so damaged, you can't absorb nutrients, you
(09:15):
can't produce a lot of the nutrients your body needs
to even heal or to detox, or to think, or
to have energy or you know, all those functions that
our body has, and so everything kind of starts in
the gut, you know, like our mental health. You know,
a lot of people don't know serotonin and dopamine are
produced by your gut bacteria, and a majority of both
are stored in the gut. Those are the chemicals that
make you happy and joyful and not depressed or anxious.
(09:37):
And it's interesting that you brought up that point about
the parasites making you not feel like yourself and kind
of affecting your brain and your mental health. There was
a study done in Africa where they found that people
infected with parasites had a four hundred percent increase in
mental health issues. And I've seen that with so many
my patients, like once the parasites start coming out, their
anxiety gets significantly better, their panic attacks go away, their
(09:58):
depression gets better, all these things with mental health improve.
And granted there are a lot of things that affect
mental health. I'm not saying it's just the gut or
just you know, infections, but it's a big piece. And
I've seen this happen to so many people where their
mental health drastically improves just from getting to the root cause,
healing the gut, allowing their body to actually get waste out.
And that's a good thing that you brought up about.
(10:19):
You know, our body, our gut is the main pathway
that waste products get out of our system. If that's
backed up. If you have leaky gut and you're constantly
circulating toxins back into your bloodstream, it's putting stress on
your liver, which can affect your hormones, which causes weight gain,
which causes you all this stuff. Your body's going to
store those toxins into fat cells, and so a lot
of people have trouble losing weight. They really just have
high toxicity in their body and they just can't get
(10:40):
rid of it because their body doesn't feel safe releasing
it from those fat cells until you heal those organs.
And so I'd say the number one thing that I
see on social media is people promoting this one detox product,
this one thing that you take will heal all of
your gut issues, and that's just so far from the truth.
Like you have to do individualized care to really get
(11:01):
people back on track. And it's hard in America because
we're just so ingrained with this idea of, you know,
one disease, one solution because of the pharmaceutical company that
people just think, oh, you know, I get this question
all the time, what parasite cleans did you use? Where
can I order that from? And I'm just like, dot,
don't do that because I also had gallbladder issues, leaky gut,
I had fungal overgrowth, mold toxicity. I mean, I was
(11:22):
a mess and I had to target everything. I was
very highly stressed. Cortisol was really high. Is a huge
piece of the puzzle because cortisol is shown to create
leaky gut, and so that's a huge part of healing
the gut lining is teaching people these daily basic things
that they can do to just regulate their nervous system
and get back down, like you said, into that rest
and digesty and out of that fight or flight state.
(11:43):
And so that's the biggest misleading advice I see is
just oh, buy this one, you know, this thirty day
detox or do this detox for two weeks, and it's like,
some people need a lot more support than that, because
we've got to heal those organs like the liver, like
the gallbladder, like the gut to be able to get
toxic waste out because those the three main organs that
are detoxing continuously, and it's not just stuff you're exposed to,
(12:04):
it's also waste products that your cells and your organs
and your tissues produce on a daily basis, you could
have the lowest TALX lifestyle of like, no, I use
all these clean products, but your body's been building up
all this waste for decades or years that you haven't
been able to clear out. And so that is a
lot of the issue for people I see is maybe
they just have a drainage issue and they just can't
get toxins out, and once we open up drainage, all
(12:26):
their issues go away. Some people have, you know, multiple
chronic infections like I did. Some people have heavy metals
or you know. I you talk a lot about like
plastic residue in the body and like microplastics and chemicals
and pesticides, and you know, all this stuff that's in
female products like makeup, skincare, of hair care, all those
chemicals really just split up. So I'd say that's probably
the most problematic advice is one solution for one problem,
(12:49):
which is so far from the truth.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
I love what you're saying because sometimes when someone comes
to me and ask for a personalized protocol and they say, oh,
I've got I'm not sleeping, I've got got a shoes,
i have unexplained waking, i have brain fog, but I'm
on a budget and I can only afford one supplement.
I'm like, well, yet be here because it is multi
(13:11):
factorial and its lifestyle and what are you putting in
your mouth? And what water are you drinking? What air
are you breathing? Are you walking? Are you rebounding? Are
you lifting weights? Are you you know? How are you?
How are your relationships in your life? All of those
things are so pivotal. And you know, it is gut.
(13:35):
And I talk a lot about the liver because the
liver is part of your digestion and if your liver
is backed up, you know, you can take all the
probiotics you want. It's it could actually backfire and make
things worse. And that's something I want to talk about.
But one other point I want that I have I
have emphasized over the years that you brought up, and
(13:55):
it's so important because so many people the biggest complaint
is unexplained weight game well, calories in, calories out. Yes,
it matters a little bit. It's just a small piece.
But if your fat cells do not feel safe to
release the toxins that they are holding on, it's going
to hold that fat in because the fat is a
(14:18):
survival mechanism. It's to hold the tocsins out of the
bloodstream for survival. So unless you're able to give your
body this safe feeling of okay, it's you now can
get rid of that stuff, you're not going to lose weight.
And if you're on one of the golps and you
lose lose some weight, it might not be the right weight.
(14:40):
And once you're off, the weight might come back on
and you're not dealing with the real problem. And how
about wouldn't it be amazing if the unexplained weightame was
just a symptom. You fix the real problem. You had
more energy. I was actually talking to someone yesterday how
she's eating more than ever, but doing all the right
things and the supplements and everything, and she looks fitter
(15:03):
than ever. I mean, her muscle tone, her fat loss,
she's feeling energetic. But she's eating more. So it's not
about calories. And we you know, if you have leaky
gut and a gut that's not working, and we've got
food that has very little nutrition in it compared to
our grandparents' generation, it's a lose lose situation. So I
(15:27):
wanted to make sure I touched on that. But probiotics.
This is something that I talk about too, And yeah,
I used to love I used to love kombucha. And
my daughter and I we go to the market now
and we'll see our old favorite kombucha's and we'll go, Oh,
that tasted so good. I would have again. But every
(15:50):
time we would drink it, or every time we took
the typical prodic biotic, I felt like World War three
was going on in my gut and I'd be bloated
in high histamine and swollen. And they're supposed to be
good for you. So can you tell us a little
more of why some of us might have adverse reactions
to these probiotics.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
Oh, that's such a great question, and that would probably
be the number two thing I would say on social
media that people give for advice is like, oh, you
have gut issues, take a probiotic. That's obviously the way
to fix all gut issues. And that is so far
from the truth. Like I can tell you that probably
ninety percent of the people I work with probiotics actually
made them worse when they tried them, and maybe ten
percent it was, you know, like a miracle cure for
(16:31):
their bloating and I'm like, great, that's awesome. You probably
just had really depleted bacteria. But I'd say let's start
with the foundation of in your gut. For those of
you who don't know, you know, you've got billions of
not trillions, of bacteria that are doing so many different
functions in your body. So back to that weight loss
piece that you talked about, and you talked about the
lot on your show. There's bacteria in your gut called
the astrobolome that actually regulates hormones in your body, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone.
(16:55):
If you wipe out a lot of that good bacteria,
you know, with really toxic food or chemicals putting on
your skin and is being absorbed into your body, if
you have chronic infections that are killing off a lot
of that good bacteria in the gut, it's going to
affect hormones. And that's also another piece of the weight
loss puzzle. And then you have the liver that you
talked about earlier, of you know, that's what recycles estrogen
and you know breaks it down every single day to
(17:16):
get it out of your body, and that can also
be a big piece of that weight loss puzzle. But
the gut, it has a it's like an economy where
you've got all these different strains of bacteria, and this
actually varies from person to person. So that's why I
also probiotics supplements can really mess people up because it
might not be the right bacteria that you need that
your body actually utilizes. And that's why I'm always a
proponent of after we heal the gut, on the back
(17:38):
end of that detox, of removing those things that are
damaging it in the first place. That's when I want
you to add back in some of those probiotics now
that you're healthy and it can handle it. But I
always want people to do it in the natural food
form of you know, like kombucha. And honestly, there's only
one clean brand that I trust in terms of kombucha.
There's so many brands out there, and a lot of
them are just not great. And so that's a problem too,
(17:59):
is that a lot of them have natural flavors and
preservatives and chemicals in them, and so they're not Just
because something looks good doesn't mean it's actually good for you.
Like quality really does matter. But I'm really a proponent
of sauerkraut Kim chie key for if you can handle it. Obviously,
heal your gut first before you try to do dairy,
because that tends to make people worse. But if you
have an overgrowth of bacteria, so kind of back to
(18:20):
that piece that you're talking about of liver and gallbladder
are really really important for digestion. You know, your liver
produces digestive enzymes, it creates bile salts that your gallbladder
releases to help continue that digestion in your small intestine.
A lot of times what happens is if you don't
have good digestion, you'll have this undigested food going into
your intestines and growing bacteria. Like the bacteria will just multiply.
(18:42):
You know, I did a microbiology degree in undergrad and
we would grow bacteria overnight. They could double in size
in twenty four hours. So you imagine constantly having undigested
food for ten years going through your intestines. How much
overgrowth of opportunistic bacteria in your gut are just going
out of control. Where now we've messed up the economy
of types of bacteria that help with hormones or help
produce or absorb nutrients, and it just creates chaos, and
(19:05):
then you just throw an atom bomb of random bacteria
into your gut and it just makes people feel horrible.
And I've heard that from so many people where they
started with a probiotic and they just felt awful. And
you know, then once we heal their gut and we start,
you know, implementing some more natural probiotics, because I feel
like nature is the best place to get your food,
you know, and anything we create in a lab isn't
(19:26):
going to be as good as something that's found in
nature because that's the bacteria we've always you know, introduced
into our gut. That is a huge piece of the
problem too, And so it's really something that you want
to make sure you improve digestion, get rid of those
chronic infections that are allowing this bacteria to maybe overgrow,
heal the gut lining. So even if you are taking probatics,
the bacteria can actually sit somewhere and stay and grow
(19:49):
and thrive instead of just you know, going right through
you if you have leaky gut or gut damage or
gut inflammation. And so it's really nuanced, like you said,
it really depends on the person. You know, Some people
feel great people feel terrible. I usually find that if
people have significant gut issues, it usually messes them up.
And so that's just one of the other terrible pieces
of advice I see on Instagram.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Yeah, so you talked about your elimination diet and how
it worked for you for a while but then it didn't.
But yeah, where are you now and how do you
get over that hump of having to be restricted with
the food you're taking in to broadening it out a
bit more.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
Yeah, Well, first thing I'll say is if you are
reliant on an extremely restrictive diet to just feel normal,
that's a red flag that something else is going on.
And a lot of people just focus way too much
on you know, the gut is the only source of
gut issues, but like you said, liver dysfunction, gallbladder, you know,
it's really a lot of these these infections that just
(20:51):
really damage the gut lining and prevent your body from
even absorbing nutrients or breaking them down into small enough
pieces to be absorbed. And you know, if you don't
remove those stressors, like you and I both have parasites, right,
And if you don't remove those stressors, it doesn't matter
how many supplements you take. It doesn't matter how much
organic food or pasture raise meat you're putting in your body.
It's just going right through you and creating really expensive
(21:14):
peat and really expensive poop. And so that's what I
have to really emphasize with people is yes, the elimination
diet can be really helpful for people to figure out
what their triggers are. But if you had something that
you could eat or drink as a child that you
now can't as an adult, that's a red flag. That's
a huge problem. Like your immune system is reacting to
something it's never reacted to before. And big things I
see are obviously like sugar. If you have Candida infections,
(21:36):
it's the last thing you want to put in your
body is more sugar. Like don't feed the fungus, is
what I tell my patients with parasites. You usually see
a lot of dairy sensitivities. I don't have a super
restrictive diet anymore. Like when I healed, when I removed
those infections and toxins and healed the organs at the
root cause level, all of a sudden, I could eat
bread and dairy again, and I still eat like sour
dough almost every day, put milk in my coffee. I
(21:58):
don't have to get almond milks and milks and all
that stuff anymore because I really got to the root
cause of what was damaging my organs. And once you
remove those stress with you, guys, your body has an
incredible capacity to heal itself when given the right environment.
And sometimes we just need a little extra help, you know,
we need like herbs and binders to help heal up
those organs and remove the toxins and infections in our body.
(22:19):
And then it's those daily, weekly, monthly lifestyle changes that
really just seal in that long term health. And so
that's really what you need to do for each person
is you know, like if you relyne up ten of
my constipation patients, they all had completely different care plans
because they all had different infections, different states of stress,
different you know, you know, environments at home with their
(22:39):
family and their friends, and you know all that stuff
you talked about earlier, and you know, different organ dysfunction
going on, and so you have to treat people as
an individual to really get them to the point where
they don't have to have a severely restrictive diet and
then once you get them to that point, it's more
of like the eighty twenty rule of eighty percent of
the time, you should be eating really well, cooking most
of your meals, you know, getting good quality food, and
(23:01):
then you should be able to kind of, you know,
stray from that maybe around the holidays or you know,
for potlucks and not feel terrible for a week. And
so that's that's kind of what I want to emphasize
with people, is it's not just getting older. It's not
normal to just all of a sudden not be able
to digest dairy and bread and you know all that stuff.
Like your body should have the ability to be exposed
(23:22):
to the toxins that we put in our bread products
in America and break them down and get them out
of your body and not have them cause an issue.
But it's when you get that backed up system of
now we've kind of gone above our threshold in terms
of how many toxins our body can handle, that things
start breaking down. And people will say probably the same
thing to you, Oh yeah, all my symptoms came out
all of a sudden, out of nowhere, and I just
(23:43):
look at them and I'm like, no, this was building
for years, maybe even decades.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
It's just that tipping point yep.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
Yeah, And I would tell people too, is like, symptoms
are the last thing to show up and the first
thing to go away. So don't rely on a horrible
symptom to actually, you know, look at long term health
and look at how your body's doing. You know, be
proactive and be promotive with your healthcare.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
Yeah. When I was going through my parasitic infection and
my liver was just shot because it was so overwhelmed.
My thyroid hormones went down, my testosterone, estrogen, and progestone
were in the tank. I could not hold muscle on
my body, and I was eating all the right things.
(24:25):
It was just really scary. Once I addressed the parasites
and my liver didn't change what I was eating, didn't
change my workouts, muscles started coming back on, and it's like, oh,
and by the way, my testosterone is on point, my
hormones are on point, thyroid's on point. Because the infection
(24:46):
was gone, my liver couldn't actually do its job. Now
my digestion is better. I've addressed everything, but I didn't
change calories and calories out. I didn't work out harder
or less or anything like that. But it's these fundamental
organs that you have to make sure that they're working
(25:06):
and working together and they're talking to each other. And
speaking of talking to each other, we've touched on it,
but the gut and the brain and can we dive
into that a little more because it's such a big thing.
And I mean, I even have a family member who's like,
I don't eat many carbs, I work out, I do.
(25:29):
Why am I not getting the transformation in my body?
Should I be on these peptides? I'm like, hey, but
it's your stress level. Yeah, let's see. You know what,
it's not what's on your plate. It's not chain taking
something out or adding something in it. You've got to
work on the stress. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
Yeah, And I love that you bring that up. Of
the calories in calories out has always been like the
mainstream advice for weight loss, but like you said, there's
so many people it doesn't work, you know. And what
people don't realize too, is like the stress piece Cortisol
influences blood sugar. That's your stress hormone. If you're in
a constant state of high cortisol high stress for a
long period, of time. It's gonna mess with fasting insulin.
(26:09):
It's going to mess with all your hormones because it's
one of the master hormones of the body that controls
estrogen and progesterone and testosterone and you know, even your
thyroid hormones and so really down regulating the nervous system,
you know, getting it from that sympathetic fight or flight
into that rest and digest is so incredibly important in
the healing process because that gut brain connection actually starts
(26:30):
in the brainstem. So in the bottom of your brainstem
you have the vegus nerve that comes out and goes
and you know, innervates all of your internal organs, including
your gut, and so that connection between your brain and
gut is through that vegas nerve. The vegas nerve is
what allows that peristalsis motion to allow you to have
normal bowel movements and not get constipated. And you know,
it has so many functions too, because, like you said,
(26:51):
from a neurological perspective, if you're in fight or flight,
the last thing your body is going to do is
push blood flow to your gut or push blood flow
to you know, something that's not absolutely essential. It's going
to actually push blood flow to your big muscles like
your arms and your legs. You can sprint and run
away because it's a survival mechanism. And so what I
see with people is when they're in that high state
(27:12):
of stress, their vagus nerve activation is incredibly low, and
so I like to teach people, you know, ways that
they can calm down the nervous system through breathing, through
vagus nerve activation, through simple things that are really actually free.
You know, grounding at sunrise and sunset is one of
the best things that can regulate your hormone. Like it
is so easy, so simple. Obviously, if you live up north,
(27:32):
it's a little challenging. We live in southern California, so
we're spoiled, but but yeah, it's it can be a
little more challenging, but that is one of the best
things you can do to help regulate sleep, to help
regulate hormones, to help you know, get in that good,
you know, day night cycle of making sure your you know,
your brain is producing melatonin at night to allow you
to fall asleep, to get that deep sleep where your
(27:53):
your liver's detoxing, your brain is detoxing your lymphatic system
is removing waste from those organs and getting it out
of your system. And so there's all these simple things
that you can do to really calm that nervous system down.
But from a neurological perspective too, if you have a
history of head injuries, even whiplash injuries are a big
damage to the bottom part of that brainstem when you
get like that rotational force in your neck. That's actually
(28:15):
been shown to have more significant concussion symptoms in people
than actually getting an impact to the head a lot
of the times, and it's because you damage that part
of the brainstem. All information from your body starts from
the bottom of the brain up and goes from the
back of the brain, you know, to the front, and
so if you have any breakdown in that part of
your brain, it's going to effect that signaling to your
internal organs, and that can be a huge piece of
(28:38):
the problem. And so I used to work on people's brains,
you know, before I got into functional medicine, and as
we were healing and like, you know, finding areas of
weakness in their brain and you know, increasing it over time,
all of a sudden they're bloating their ibs, their constipation
would go away or get significantly better. And I was like, oh,
that's interesting, And I would see that a lot with
concussion patients. They didn't have good issues before and then
(28:59):
they did after it. And now I think was a
big reason why I had such significant gut issues at
a young age. I had a really severe head injury
when I was eighteen and almost died, like it was bad,
and I damaged that part of the brain stem that
the vagus nerve lives in, and so all this stuff
made sense when I started learning neurology, I was like, oh,
that's why I you know, I had such severe gut
issues and I couldn't go to the bathroom and I
really had to heal a lot of those brain issues
(29:21):
that were still kind of residually left over from that
head injury to get the full healing benefit of, you know,
getting my gut health back on track. And that's where
I started. But then it was like, Okay, well, now
we've got to address the other piece of the puzzle.
You know, the chronic stress for being in grad school
and you know, starting your own practice and you know,
all that stuff and all those infections that were growing
in the gut before I healed my brain for five
(29:42):
years and you know, get those out of the system.
But yeah, your brain is so incredibly important to gut health,
and your gut bacteria communicate with your brain all the time,
which I find it incredibly fascinating. I don't know how
how that happens, but it's it's bizarre. And so yeah,
it's if you guys want to just really nerd out,
really huge into brain gut connection. There's some really cool
research out there that's will blow your mind. That's pretty fascinating. You.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Like I said, you and I have very similar stories.
So in twenty fifteen, I was rear ended at a
stoplight by cargoing fifty miles an hour, hit my head
on the steering wheel and it was my left eye
and you can't see it now because I'm not gonna
my supplements. Literally got rid of my scar and know
and the infection without any antibiotics and all of that.
(30:29):
Super excited about that. But this is your gallbladder meridian. Oh,
my gallbladder was so backed up and I didn't understand
the connection. And also I did neurocranial restructuring and addressed
my neck and everything. And not only did it help
that meridian, and it's a weak point, so I sometimes
(30:52):
will have to go back and get it I adjusted
as well still, because it's whenever you have a weak
spot in your body, that's where the pain the damage
is always going to go to, whether it's your lower
back or your knee, or me it's my eye. But
the other thing that I noticed with that treatment for
me is they adjusted my neck and all of that
(31:16):
from the whiplash. My digestion would be better. Literally every
time after the treatment I'd go to the bathroom. And
you can't make this stuff up, right, So that you
mentioned the vegus nerve and the vagual nerve activation. There's
a lot of talk about the vegus nerve. Now what
(31:38):
does that look like?
Speaker 3 (31:40):
Yeah, I mean you can go like the expensive route
and buy one of those vagus nerve activators, Like I
used to have one of those in my practice and
I would use that on all my concussion patients when
they first came in because they can't handle a neck adjustment.
Like people don't realize, like if you adjust someone's upper neck,
that is the biggest, like one of the biggest stimulus
is you can give the brain like it really likes.
(32:00):
And so if somebody has, you know, a really fragile
brain because they just had a head injury, that's the
last thing you want to do. So I would do
all this neuro stuff to really like warm them up
to be able to get to the point where we
could even do a neck adjustment. And so that's interesting
that you say, like every time I got my neck
and my skull you know, adjusted, all of a sudden,
my gut was better. And it's because that vegas nerve
comes out of that upper neck and goes down, you know,
all throughout your internal organs, and you know, if you
(32:22):
have any sort of inflammation or damage up there. That's
also a big part of the vegas nerve issue is
you know a lot of inflammation and scar tissue that
builds up in that neck can also kind of just
you know, physically compress the vegas nerve and create a
lot of issues as it comes down into your abdomen.
And I would say, I'm sorry, I totally lost my
(32:46):
train of thought.
Speaker 2 (32:46):
I was the original activated if someone was sitting, oh yeah,
something Nate could do themselves.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
Okay, thank you. Yeah, I totally lost my train of
thought there. But yeah, So if you're wanting to activate
the vegas nerve, one of the best things you can
do again it's free, doesn't cost anything, is gargling and humming.
You know, that actually activates that vegas nerve. You can
also take and I have these videos on my Instagram too,
you can take like a little you can get a
vibration stick. It's like a fifty five dollars tool. It's
(33:15):
called a z vibe and if you just put that
in a certain part of your ear and vibrate it,
that actually stimulates a branch of the vegas nerve that's
close to the surface of the skin. So there's all
these simple things that you can do. But gargling and
humming are two of the best ones. Breathing exercises are
also incredibly beneficial because you're actually putting physical stress. If
you breathe properly on the organ, it's kind of like
(33:37):
squeezing out your intestines, which is going to activate that
vegas nerve as well. So if you do like deep
not just belly breathing, but like actually focusing on you know,
your torso as a whole, not just belly breathing, but
also breathing through your back and the sides and like
pushing down towards your pelvic floor. That also kind of
has a nice massaging effect on the gut and that
can stimulate vegas nerve as well. You can get someone
(33:58):
to do like that myofashion release that I was telling
you about that that doctor did on me. I teach
that to my patients now too, Like how to you know,
release the fascia in the abdomen. That's a huge way
to stimulate the vegus nerve. And so there's all these
simple tools that you guys can do. I know a
lot of people do breathing with you know, a lot
of exhalation focus like humming, like a deep hum because
it activates the vagus nerve while you're breathing, and so
(34:20):
you'll see that with a lot of people who are
big into breath work. But those are a lot of
free things you can do. And then obviously you can
buy like that z vibe, you know, vibrate that certain
part of the ear. You can get one of those
vagus nerve stimulators. They tend to be a little more expensive,
like around four or five hundred dollars but that stuff
really helps just calm the nervous system down because when
people have a head injury, when they have a you know,
a car accident, their brain immediately goes into fight or
(34:41):
flight survival mode, and so we've got to help kind
of bring that back down so their body can heal
and they can restore that connection between you know, their
brain and their body.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
It's funny say that about the stress, right, and then
initial moments when I hit my head on the steering wheel,
I literally the thought that went through my head was
I'll be fine, I'll go, I'll be at my yoga
class tomorrow morning at six am. Because there was no
pain yet, there was no The adrenaline was so high
that I didn't feel any pain until two am that night,
(35:14):
which was probably six hours later. And the pain was
just massive when it hit me. Yeah, my system had
come down and my body was now recognizing the pain.
But in the beginning it was like, oh, I'm fine.
I just have a lot of blood all over my face.
It's great. I can't believe. We're almost out of time.
(35:34):
But before we go, can you tell people what they
will experience coming to work with you?
Speaker 3 (35:41):
Yeah? Absolutely, Well, you know, I just want to say
thank you for you know, having me on your podcast,
Sarah Steff. We've been really fun talking to you about
this stuff because it's such an important conversation, especially in
today's day and age with all the overwhelming amount of
information on social media, and so I like to kind
of cut through that and just really get to the
you know, the root of it. But yeah, I would say,
you know, if people, you know, if you're listening to
(36:03):
this podcast and you're thinking to yourself, you know, I've
dealt with consumpation for years. I would love to be
able to go to the bathroom every day. Or I
would love be able to be able to eat you know,
bread or dairy or garlic or avocados or whatever you're
sensitive to without you know, suffering for days after or
you know, I'd love to not look six months pregnant
after I eat. You know, the best place you can
reach me is through Instagram. Again, my name is doctor
(36:25):
Kate Davis, So that's my Instagram handle is at doctor
Kate Davis d r k.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
A T E d A v I S.
Speaker 3 (36:32):
I'm sure it'll be in the show notes too, but
but yeah, I would say go on there, follow me.
I have a ton of you know, really good info
that goes into you know, even more detail than what
we talked about today on you know, all these different
aspects of gut health and how important it is to
just look at the whole picture. And if you're someone
who's you know, really ready and you're just like, hey,
I really just need to find someone who can really
just you know, work me through this issue of you know,
(36:55):
bloating or ibs or constipation you've been struggling for years.
I'm gonna give you guys a big diss count. So
if you DM me on Instagram the number one hundred,
I'm going to give you guys one hundred dollars off
an initial console plus labs package so we can get
a full picture of everything going on in your body.
You know, what drainage pathways aren't functioning, what infections you
have in your body, what toxins are in your body?
(37:16):
You know, do you have chronic stress and leaky gut
and all these things we've talked about, and get a
full picture of what's going on, and I'll come up
with an individualized care plan to get your health back
on track. And one other thing, I just want to
leave with your audience to you, Sarah is you know,
I know a lot of people have tried so many
different things. I went almost a decade before figuring out
what was going on with me. So I just want
to encourage you guys that healing is absolutely possible. Just
(37:38):
because you haven't found an answer yet doesn't mean it's
not out there. It just means you haven't found it yet.
So I just want to encourage you. I've seen so
many people heal from ibs, from constipation, from acid reflux,
from chronic bloating who have had it for decades, and
it's just amazing when you guys get to the root,
cause healing actually happens pretty fast for a lot of people.
(37:58):
And so just know that you know you just haven't
found the answer yet, So just don't give up on
that healing journey of trying to find your answer.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
Aimen to that the body is the miracle. You just
need to clear the pathways and let it do its
work and do its magic. I mean, I'm almost fifty
years old, and I feel better than I felt when
I was twenty. I have less symptoms, more energy, better sleep,
all the things, and supposedly i'm supposed to be a
lot worse because I'm a lot older, and that's not
(38:27):
the reality. So I just am so aligned with what
you're talking about and what you're doing, and so grateful
for you. And we definitely will have your links down
in the show notes. So thank you so much for
joining us today.
Speaker 3 (38:42):
Thank you for having me, sir. I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (38:46):
I'm sure this hit home with a lot of you.
So many of you are constipated and bloated and unexplained
weight gain and puffiness and you don't know why. Doctor
Kate definitely hit home, and she's definitely aligned with what
I tell you, And I just wanted to mention the
two no brainers. We talked about the liver and how
(39:06):
it is so important to your digestion, and I didn't
start feeling better with my gut. I'd been doing the
enzymes and doing the right probiotics and all of that stuff,
but until I dressed my liver. Your liver is the
corner stone of digestion, of your hormone production, of your
(39:26):
thyroid health. Your thyroid hormones convert in your liver, and
that accelerated liver care was a game changer for me. Personally,
when I was going through my horrific parasitic infection that
I had shingles, I had spike protein exposure. My liver
enzymes were through the roof. An Accelerated liver care is
unlike any other liver supplement out there. First of all,
(39:49):
the herbs are the quality a second to none. We
have high concentrations in the supplement. We then have put
the supplement in the ingredients in ratios that works synergistically
to the highest life force and you're going to get
the most bang for your buck with it. I've had
I have liver specialists who think they know everything trying
(40:12):
out Accelerate liver care going. I really like what it's
doing and what I'm feeling. So it's got cooke defilanthus
to a clipta calcium deglucorate to help with that recycling
estrogen that we want to get out of our body.
An ingredient called palpereria that has study after study of
being antiseirrhosis, anti liver cancer, and so these these herbs
(40:37):
help with the bile. They help increase the bile which
is the detergent to get the toxins out, helps with digestion,
helps with fatty liver disease, which most of you have unfortunately,
and it restores that digestive function. My pooping is better.
I don't need those laxatives like I once did. And
(40:57):
it increases the mitochondrial function in your liver. And then
right there with it is the accelerated cellular detox powder,
which we call this the gut superhero. It soaks up
those toxins weather's from the holidays and the alcohol and
the food you're not used eating to just gently daily
detox of soaking up the toxins you're kicking out and
(41:18):
getting them out of the body. We may not have
needed it forty years ago, we didn't have the toxic
world that we have now. But today we are living
in a different world and more people than ever are
suffering from constipation, bloat, unexplained waking, puffiness, hair loss, thyroid issues.
(41:39):
They're all connected to the gut and mental issues by
the way, which we touched on connected to the gut.
So yes, it's connected to your cell phone and social media,
but it's also connected to the gut, so just wanted
to touch on those two. Thanks for tuning in today.
