Hi, and welcome to Cooks andCars Race the Nation and Edition. I'm
Robed Demiko alongside Michelle Rahall. Michelle, welcome to the show. Always good
to be back, Always good totalk about racing. And I think we
have a pretty damn exciting show,There's no doubt about that. All right.
First of all, we'll kick offwith our sponsor, the Big Green
Egg, the Ultimate Cooking Experience. While gone to Big green egg dot com

(00:21):
and find an authorized dealer near you. You can shop online and have it
delivered to your home for free. That's right. All you have to do
is log on to Big green eggdot com. All right, now let's
get into racing and we're talking. The trucks were out at Kansas and also
the Cup guys were out there aswell, so great stuff there. It

(00:43):
was good racing. Listen, itwasn't. It's Kansas. It's a mile
and a half. There's plenty ofroom to race there. So they got
spread out, which is, youknow, kind of a good thing.
But you know, you have atop line a bottom line, and you
know it makes for good racing ona re start when you're spread out over
that mile and a half track andyou know the leaders got like two seconds

(01:06):
on the guy in front of him. It's not such a race anymore,
right, but it's it's NASCAR racing. It's the mile and a half track,
but the cup guys, what yougot? I got one of those
stories that, Oh yeah, Imyself and a business partner. We flew
to Kansas for the truck race tomeet Carl Edwards. We were trying to
do a little deal with Carl andwhat a I mean, a hell of

(01:30):
a nice guy. Just to doubtwell, you know, we were on
his pit box and all that.Man, I was beat. I was
really tired, didn't feel like doinganything. So I go to the car,
which is in the infield. Igo to sleep with the ac on
right. Well, little did Iknow that the headlights were on as well.

(01:53):
I get a bang on the windowand I'll wake up from a dead
sleep, like, what the hellis going on? It's fireman, its
officials. My head pointed right atthe track and the drivers are calling in
complaining, and I'm going, ohmy god, I mean, I wantn't

(02:13):
to apologize in NASCAR said I wasjust tired, fell asleep. I didn't
realize that I apologize all the teams, everybody. It was. It was
one of those rayhar moments that you'refamiliar with. Oh, there are many,
we won't go into them. Thatone was innoculus. It was glad
nobody crashed because of me, butit was funny. It was truly hilarious,

(02:38):
very good. Everybody on the truckon Carl Edwards team were laughing at
me. When I walked back tothe wall, it was like, that's
that's pretty good. We had somegreat racing in the trucks. Let's look
at the the results there ever, with Zane Smith, Tim a jet Ski,

(03:00):
Grant end Finger, Chandler Smith,Kristin Eckis, John Hunter, nimache
Matt Benedetto, Derek Krause, MattCrafton and Ben Rose round out the top
ten. So what does that looklike in points right now? Well,
Ben Rhodes is your points leader withmultiple wins on the season, three hundred
and nineteen points ahead of John Hunter, Nimacheck, who's twenty points back,

(03:20):
Saint Smith twenty one points, ChandlerSmith no relation, twenty nine points back,
Timajestski, Stuart Freezing, Carson Hostsavar, kristin Akis, Grant Enfinger,
and Matt crafton round out the topten there, so congratulations to those guys
again, good racing, nothing reallyspecial, it's Kansas um and we'll get

(03:43):
into some of the ratings with theF one and the last week's Dover Darlington
race when we recap that here ina second. But what else you got?
Just a fun little fact that ifyou ever get on Jeopardy you're gonna
love. I won't. But let'sgo not Benedetto, it's de Benedetto.
Well, Di Benedetto is also TonyBennett. The singer's name really Tonio di

(04:10):
Benedetto, and they shortened it toBennett, so he shares the same name
as the iconic Tony Bennett. AndI'm gonna get he does not have the
same voice. He doesn't. Ihave the luxury of actually being in the
front row meeting uh Tony Bennett anumber of times with a crazy ex girlfriend

(04:30):
and who would not leave him alone. And he was just the nicest guy
on earth. And he's also apainter. He does beautiful, beautiful work.
Were you also in that audience asleepwith the headlights on? I should
have been. Now he delivered abrilliant performance always does. I mean,

(04:56):
and now the poor guy's in badshape. But yeah, you know,
wish him the best and um,but uh, you know, the funny
thing is he can still sing andthe It's an odd thing with Alzheimer's.
Uh, Glenn Campbell, same thing. Um. It seems like Alzheimer's patients
are capable of music and remembering themusic, but not you know, not

(05:20):
who their children are. It's it'sjust the strangest thing. It must come
from a different part of the brain. But Bennett is going through the same
thing. He can remember the music, he can see the music, he
can sing the music. Glenn Campbelluntil it finally killed him, he was
at that level. He very seldomforgot the words to his songs and things

(05:43):
like that. It's an insidious disease, it really is. I think they're
coming close to being able to pinpoint, you know, how to minimize its
effects or eliminate them. I hopemy grandmother had it, and it was
it was rough. You know,it's on family terribly. All right,
we'll talk about the Cup race andthat one. We had a pretty good

(06:05):
finish there because Kurt Busch was racinghard. Kyle Larson and Kyle got into
the wall, not by Kurt's doing, just by great racing and both guys
trying to overdo it, and Kurtcame out on top of that one.
Kyle Larson was second, Kyle Buschwas third, Denny Hamlin fourth, Christopher

(06:26):
Bell was fifth, Martin Truex Junior. A lot of Toyota's up in that
front there. Ross Chastain was seventh. Ricky Stinkhouse, as you see I
wrote in there, Stinkhouse, Ilove that name. Man, He'll never
live that one down. Alex Bowmanand Bubba Wallace rounding out your top ten
as the results. So what doesit look like with points right now?
Chase Elliott still your points leader?Four hundred and seventy five, Ryan Blaney

(06:48):
back fifty two, Kyle Busch movesup to third, William Byron moves down
to fourth, Ross chas Stain fifthin points. Man doing an incredible job
right now, Martin Truex Junior.Joey Lagana, who will get into here
in a second, because this isa guy. Last week at Darlington,
we mentioned how great Kyle and Kurtwere racing at Kansas. Well, Joey

(07:12):
and William Byron not so much We'llget into that here in a second.
But Alex Bowman, Kyle Arson, and Christopher Bell round out your top ten
in points right now. So let'sgo back this week. We had Kurt
Bush and Kyle Larson racing hard sideby side, you know, trying to
side draft everything, getting up closeto each other, and that's when it,

(07:33):
you know, he got tried toget up. He was you know,
he's leaning into him, not touchinghim, just not you know,
squeezing the room that he had atthe top because Kyle likes that top lane,
so he was trying to squeeze thatlane as small as possible and it
worked because he was trying to squeezeup and it sucked him right into the
wall and he still hit the walltwice during the day and still finished second.

(07:57):
Great driver Kyle Larson, but greatracing between the too. Kurt's always
one of those guys I remember goingback when he raced uh. I think
it was Darlington again. Um well, I'm talking Kansas right now, but
Darlington will get into the second. But Darlington with Kurt Bush and what was
his name thing, it's gonna cometo me here in a second. That
rode the Tide car Ricky Craven andthey had that great battle and crashed after

(08:22):
the start finish line, which wasreally yeah, man, it was.
It was fun, all right. So now we go back to Darlington and
we talk about Joey Lagano and WilliamByron getting into it and Joey just punting
William Byron who was leading and listen, he was getting caught but Joey had

(08:43):
a hard time getting around him anddecided, hey, it's time for me
to pun him in the last corneron the last lap and put him in
the wall and he actually finished Ithink like eighth or something like that.
But Joey went on to win therace. So when is it okay to
do that to somebody for a winor is it? Is there no gentleman

(09:05):
rule like in sports cars. ButI don't think it's you know, I
think that's far too egregious. It'sjust too aggressive and you know, world
and it's not escaping the attention ofworld class drivers all around the world.
Jensen Button, world champion with BraunGph, he came out. They watched

(09:28):
these races and he said, Isaw it happen. He said, I
don't see how you can call thatracing when you're stuffing somebody into the wall
on purpose. So you know, there's a big there's a big split between
what's you know, what's acceptable andwhat's not. And I don't I personally

(09:48):
if I've punted people before and youknow, full bodied cars, and but
it was only because they punted mefirst. So well that's what joe said.
I put them off and into thedie. I mean, but it
was you know, in retrospect, you've got to stop and consider it.
You could kill somebody. Yeah, you actually could really kill somebody. So

(10:11):
you know, you got to bejudicious with the way you do these things.
You literally, in the early formulacars, if you were really good,
you could get right up behind somebodyand just barely touch the gearbox in
a corner, just bare and notreally damage your car, and you could
send them flying. Well, theycalled onto that. That's why you see

(10:31):
such restriction in open wheel now andformula cars. Yeah, well you take
that back where somebody can get hurtwhen when retaliating and and Joey said,
hey, listen, on one ofthe restarts, he squeezed me, got
into me a little bit, andyou know, there was a little bit.
Yeah, sure, could you sayI'm going to retaliate and raise them

(10:52):
hard, and that's how I'm gonnaraise them. That's okay, But then
you go. It was a fewyears back in Atlanta when Carl Edwards,
the guy you were just mentioning earlier, had taken um Brad Keslowski turn them
around and that's when they had thatwing on there. And then wing got
turned around. It basically lifted themoff the ground and set them down on
the roof. And it was basicallyto retaliate against something. But I thought

(11:13):
that one was a little rough becauseI mean he sent the guy flipping into
the air in a very dangerous situation. Luckily everything was okay. These guys
lose their temper, you know, and that's the that's about the worst thing
you can do. Yes, there'semotion in a race car. It is
not banal, it's notmin you know. There. You're focused, yes,
you're dead focused, I mean, mouth hanging open, You're just focused,

(11:41):
you know, totally. But whenyou bring emotion into it, that is
when you make mistakes. You bringtoo much emotion to the you know,
to what you're trying to accomplish, which is get ahead of the guy in
front of you. You can oftenlet that emotion creep over and you make
mistakes, you crash people. We'veseen that in Formula One at Silverstone with

(12:05):
Verstappen and Hamilton, and it just, uh, if I had to,
if I had to do it overagain, I'd take the emotion out of
it. And I'm an emotional person. You know, that's very hard to
do. I mean a lot ofguys can't do that, I know,
and that's where the mistakes are made. Yeah, but you notice prost Senna.
Those guys, I mean, theythey knew how to turn it on

(12:28):
and turn it off. Yeah. And I will say this, if Joey
Lagano was aggressive and got underneath himand use that you know, eight tires
are better than four tires, andkind of moved them up a little bit,
That's okay, that's hard racing, right. But the literally punched the
dude, the dude goes and upin the wall. You got a problem
there, right, So that's whereit's people draw the line. But on

(12:50):
the other hand, with Joey's saying, He's like, listen, it is
so hard to win in this seriesright now, and any opportunity I can
get I'm going to ache and hedid that. So, I mean that's
the mentality of a Tony Stewart. You know, back in the day,
Tony would have punted his grandmother, remember his one of his faviorite quotes,
punt my grandmother to go, youknow, win a race and they will.

(13:13):
Dale Earnhardt was the same way.Yeah, you know, you can
just name him off. But youknow the other side of that coin is,
you know, we're at a Ithink fulcrum point of where auto racing
is going and how these you know, these celebrities, which they are,
i mean personalities are driving the sport. At what point do they say,

(13:37):
you know, does NASCAR say,Okay, enough's enough, We're gonna get
a little bit more, a littlebit more restrictive on what you're doing here
because you're endangering other people. Andthat is you know, just a very
very tough, aggressive way of doingit. And you've gone too far.

(13:58):
Yeah, I mean, you know, I think perhaps f one's gone too
far the other way. You know, he had his wheel just up next
to the other door. Yeah,it does come off like, hey,
ladies, back down. Can yousee that they're racing and they're racing hard,
you know. Yeah, And Ithink one one of our other interviews,

(14:18):
we interviewed Juan Pablo Montoya and hetalked about that exact same thing,
is like, listen, stop whiningrace. We stop whinning in race.
I mean some of these guys theyget if you listen to the in car
in F one, oh my gosh, they sound like a bunch of spoiled
brats in the car. It's gotto stop. Yeah, you're right,

(14:41):
said, we're race car drivers. We wind, It's what we're supposed to
do. Yeah, all right,Michelle, appreciate you coming on the show
that wraps up our cup and uh, NASCAR news and rumors. But uh,
and I will say this real quickbefore we go. We did see
some tire issues. Again. Ithink it was Eric Jones had the wheel

(15:03):
that they had to literally cut therim off the car to get the hub,
the little lug off the car.Didn't they have the same similar problem
with Bubba Wallace or was that justit seemed to me that was an ongoing
thing with his pit crew, becauseevery time a guy came in it seemed
like there was something different. Youknow, they didn't have it together.

(15:26):
That's the way they also had thatpit penalty or yeah, pitt the road
penalty when they let the tire outof their pit box and went bouncing down
the pit row. But yeah, you know, just something. Congratulations to
Michael Jordan's yeah, owns the teamfor the win with Bush and you know

(15:48):
two times he's a two time winnernow as an owner. I mean that's
a good step forward. Absolutely.I think he's done the right thing and
he knows how to manage things andmanage money. Obviously private guy. But
congratulations to Michael Jordan, and congratulationsand Bush for the win. Sorry for
what you know happened to Bubba Wallace. But you know, I think that

(16:11):
if they go back and do adebrief on that race and those fitstops,
somebody's gonna lose their position, orthey're gonna shuffle people around, or it's
gonna be you know, they're gonnasend them to Seal Team six Buds training
or something out in Caronado, California, to get their heads together. Yeah,

(16:32):
I will say that you look atthe situation over there, and that's
the exact reason they brought k KurtBush over there. It's to see what
we need to do these cars theguys raced everything. He's been in good
cars, he's been in bad cars. He's gonna be able to tell these
guys, hey, this is thedirection we need to go. This is
what's going to work. And Ithink that's paying off now because listen,

(16:53):
Bubba Wallace doesn't have the experience.Do I think he's at the level of
Kurt Bush. No, he's notclose. Ye even. I mean he's
got a lot of work to doto get to that level. And bringing
Curt over there is going to helpthem get there a lot quicker, which
is to pay off. It's exactlythe same for Alonso and being able to

(17:14):
be somebody that can actually literally callhis own race from the car. You
need that experience, you need thatsetup experience. You need to be able
to be aggressive on a start andhave planned it out. And Alonso's proven
that. Now you've got Kurt Bushand he's bringing, you know, just

(17:36):
untold value to that team with hisexperience. He knows what's going wrong,
he knows what to tell him todo, he knows who's doing what.
That's what they need and if Bubbawill follow along in those footsteps and listen
to the advice being given, whichis hard to do for racing drivers.
But if he does, he's gonnahe'll excel, all right, don't forget.
