Octimber's Hurricane History. September once again a lift up to
its reputation of being the most active month of hurricane season.
It's more storms developed during the month six than had
developed prior to it this year five highlighted of course
by Helene, which we're still assessing the full extent the
damage from. As we've also seen it for the past week,
the tropics become much more active generally than what we
had seen previously. So entering October last year we had

(00:30):
already had seventeen named storms developed. So this year we're
even to be significantly less active up to this point,
and any event, it's always nice to put September in
the rear view mirror. In addition to being the most
active month of hurricane season, it's also a significant turning
point for activity. The early months of hurricane season kind
of worked as like a hurricane incubator, gradually heating up

(00:50):
the ocean, creating favorable conditions for development, and as we
get gradually cooler, whether we as we exit September, it
has the opposite effect, so about bad. Of the six
months of hurricane season, October is the third most active,
behind September and August, so we're certainly not off the
hook just yet, as many Southwardians hit by Wilma, for example,

(01:13):
can attest to Wilma incidentally, in October of two thousand
and five was the last hurricane to make landfall in
Southeast Florida. Since tracking began in eighteen fifty one, eighty
two percent of tropical storms and hurricanes have happened prior
to October. That's always one of my favorite things about
getting out of September. Only eighteen percent of what has
historically happened has happened from here on. So typically during

(01:37):
the month of October you have two name storms that develop,
one that becomes our hurricane, and about one tropical storm
or hurricane makes landfall somewhere in the US about every
three years during the month. So statistically, the wind is
now at our back, which is always my bad pun
and intended all right.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Recovery center speaking of hurricanes now open for those affected
by Helene. The Florida Division of Emergency Management announced yesterday
three disaster recovery centers in Hillsborough Manatee in Sarasota Counties.
The centers offer recovery assistance one on one help applying
for FEMA assistance. Oh and the Dolphins look horrible and
lost thirty one to twelve to the previously owing three
