Speaker 1 (00:04):
From West Palm Beach to Tallahassee. This is Florida's news.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
That impacts you on the Brian Mudshow. Yeah, Brian Joel
Malcolm with you on this Fridays we take a look
at news from around the state that does impact you.
You had another vote on a data center, this one
a permanent moratorium by Tampa Bay. This is Fox thirteen

(00:29):
Tampa reporting about the new moratorium on data centers.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Commissioner Stephanie Madden says she understands the community's concerns.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
Do we have enough electrons on the grid? Do we
have enough water in our water permit?

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Madden says it's important to gather facts and information first
to address the widespread of fear in the community and
to see how they can collaborate with data center developers
that could be.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
That with the pushback, the tech companies are coming up
with some solutions, coming up with some public private partnerships,
coming up with more opportunities for them to put the
skin in the game where they build the generation, where
they maybe buy the more expensive alternative water.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
The goal is coming up with the best possible scenario
if and when the city moves forward with data centers
in the future in Lakeland, Carla Byron Fox thirteen News.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
On the surface, this sounds very reasonable. Most people are
opposed to data centers. We have seen them already shelved
in Indiantown. We've seen them Shelton and Okichobee County. We've
seen them push back in Palm Beach County. The project Tangos.
That's the only one the area that is still out

(01:38):
there in Limbo, and that is imperiled because of backlash.
I get the knot in my backyard thing. And I've
also been on the record as saying I believe in photonics,
so I'm not a number one van of just your
typical hyper scaled data center. I would prefer something that
is based on photonics, which is far more efficient all

(01:59):
the way around. Now, with that said, there are two
things that I found borderline alarming in what you heard
from Tampa, but again otherwise sounds pretty reasonable. The first
is the idea that that was put out there public
private partnership. Now, the last thing we need are our
governments getting involved in AI innovation. In my view, regulation

(02:25):
from on high sure local governments getting involved potentially with
hyper scale data centers. The implications there I'm not getting
into here, but are beyond concerning to me. And there
are many so call public private partnerships that I'm not
a huge fan of. Generally, private enterprise does things better

(02:48):
than government, and once you mix it two, there are
a lot of outcomes historically that are complicated, but especially
start talking about AI. So that's one. The next is
I view this as entirely unnecessary. She's talking about all
these issues which are real, power, waterway. The state of
Florida passed the law there cannot be a single data

(03:10):
center that doesn't account for these things. Not a single
cent more in the power bill can be paid by
any resident of the state of Florida. Any of that
has to be accounted for by all data centers. So
they did a moratorium based on a false premise. The
state has already passed a law that accounts for what
they put in here, and I think that's important to note.

(03:32):
And so whatever your thoughts are there's that. The next
piece is this, then it's something that I've consistently said
and needs to be considered. The NIMBI thing, the not
in my backyard thing again understood, However, if not in
somebody's backyard it will be in China, it will be
other places around the world. And if we do not

(03:52):
win the AI race, it's over for us. So we
can sit here all day long and ago not in
my backyard, right to the point where China is in
our backyard because they've won.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
And we many people don't understand this. I know that
message needs to be this is the arms race. You know,
the Cold War was about nuclear weapons. The new Cold
War with China and these axis powers. I mean the
nuke thing, sure, but the bigger thing, because China doesn't
want nuclear.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
War is AI. Whoever is on the top with AI
will be the world superpowered. And if that's China, we
got a lot more problems than that. Data center is
closer to my kid school than I would like it
to be. And here's the other thing. There are a
massive amount of jobs that go along with all these things,
a massive amount of jobs. So we need to be
cognizant of all of these different things. It's an important

(04:40):
part of the conversation. Meanwhile, four to the fifth most
dangerous state for pedestrians, according to Smart Growth America's annual
Dangerous by Design study. It accounts for pedestrian safety features
by the way, in the country, the Miami for Latterdale
West Bomb Beach metro seventeenth most dangerous nationally. And as

(05:01):
we take a look at the tropics, good news there.
You only have the one little disturbance that's weak that's
going to pass over Mexico this weekend. Nothing else out there.
Lots of Saharan dust that's still pushing through, perfect for
a hurricane repellent. Gas price is off a couple cents
per gallon three ninety four on average state wide now
and your average price in the Palm Beach is four

(05:21):
twelve Martin and Saint Lucie chicking in at three ninety
three in Indian River County three ninety six.
