Speaker 1 (00:00):
We know one hundreds flocked to the opening if the
new Casureina Aquatic and Leisure Center on the weekend with
live entertainment, food trucks, activity, So it's giveaways to mark
the occasion. It is a twenty six point eight million
dollar facility. It's posting three pools, including a fifty meter pool,
twenty five meter to learn to swim pool and a
resort style lagoon, as well as an aqua tower. And

(00:22):
in the studio right now is the Lord Mayor convat Scarlets.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Good morning, Corn, good morning, and I agree with you.
It's absolutely magnificent. Now we used to complain to me
about parap pool doesn't have a swimming pool for the toddlers. Well,
the Kazarina one does want parents. All the pools got
a zero depth entry, especially for kids with disability. Twenty
half thousand people turn up eleven ten thirty. They're quelling

(00:47):
all the way to the petrol station in Vanderlin Drive
and because people wanted to come there, and they open
the gates and they just stormed in fantastic opportunity. Catherine King,
the meat Federal Minister, was there, so it was goossling
Catherine and looked did the announcement promily seven and a
half million dollars which they delivered. We put about nineteen

(01:07):
million dollars there. But it is the state of the art, So.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
How many people do you reckon they're at the opening
con two.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
And a half thousand, half thousand. We have people's counter on
top of the entry, so we can know exactly how
many people came in. But as I do you before,
it's not just a renovation, it's completely demolition and completely
reconstruction of the state of their pool. And yes, the
fifteen meter pool, it is fifty meters. It's been measured
and we've been assured it's fifty meters so it complies

(01:35):
to the national swimming standards and it can be used
for competition.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
But it is awesome, so it can be so the
fifty mi pool can be used fractural, right, but that's
a smart thing to do. That is cool because by
that local club they might want to have their own
carnival and then they make money from the gate and
all that kind of things.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Right. And the old look, it was different standards when
it was built in nineteen seventy seven. We still have
yards instead of meters, so it was fifty does not
translate to fifteen meters. It was a little bit shorter,
a meter shorter, but that's been Do you have to
see the playground for the kids. We've got a soccer pitch,
we've got a quarter basketball court, we've got a playground

(02:14):
for kids, with a wet playground for kids. There's a
bucket there. It's unbelievable. It's beautiful.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
So tell us. In terms of the feedback from the community,
it was obviously very positive. Well, that's certainly what we've heard.
Is there a cost to using that facility moving forward?
Eye when people go there to swim laps, I'm assuming
they've got to pay.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
The go a lot, the same way that we pay
they go to parap or Night Cliff. It's a YMCA
now called Why is operating it. It's been operating for
us for a number of years and the cost already
published in our annual plan. We're not going to charge
twice or three times as much as per up. It's
the same facility, same money you pay.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
I think that's fair enough, particularly for those regular users
of the pool. You've got to make it a reasonable amount.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
And that marked the beginning of a week that's full
of activities. You mentioned the fun Bus. This is celebrating
the thirty five year anniversary of the Fun Bus. I
can't believe it's been around for the day.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
What are you doing to celebrate?

Speaker 2 (03:08):
I am starting on Saturday twenty July from two pm
until six pm at Lake Alexander. They'd be there, they'd
be fun, they'd be kids. You can get your own
kids there and celebrate a thirty five year offer to
the community by offering to young mothers especially an opportunity
for them to go out with their kids outside the

(03:29):
air condition, outside their union.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
It is actually the fun Bus is fantastic, particularly when
your kids are really little. Mono pass that stage now,
but when they're really little, they love heading along. It's
one of those things that you can do with the
moms or dads that are in your mother's and father's group,
go and catch up and meet up with the kids.
It's a really nice thing to be able to do.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
And it's good for the parents. Yeah, not only the
kids have a good fund, but socialize. And here this week, Katie,
I've got every Lord Mayor of Australia coming to Darkwarth.
We've got the and your General meeting. This year, I
was the president of the Lord Mayo's Association in Australia.
It's rotating every year and this year we've got the AGM.

(04:08):
So guess what I'm going to do it. We're gonna
take them down to the waterfront and so the waterfront
and then I'm going to take them Barra Maudy fishing
on Thursday in Barramady Adventures, something you don't do down south,
especially this time of the year. And the top of
it all up, I said, guys, I'm putting a top
and pitch black exercise for you. Sitting at the grass
of the casino and saw then the chips flying.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Yeah, oh yeah, that'll be awesome on Thursday. It's going
to be great. That is show. But so tell me
what they're all here for. The IgM, all the Lord
mayors from around the country.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Of Lord mayos from Perth to Sydney to Brisbane, ourselves,
Adelaide and Hobart, we all get together. We're operating as
a group to advocate for our cities, put pressure on
local government and state government and federal government for increased
funding and support. We have done a lot, we achieved
a lot. Then listen to us because we represent millions

(04:58):
of people around Australia and we're taking terms.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Is there anything that you're specifically you know, it's sort
of pushing for that. I GM not.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
To forget we're remote, not to forget the extra cost
of living for us. Were actually thinking about proposing to
local to federal government doing exactly the same way they're
doing Tasmania, where they're offering subsidies and encouragement to companies,
especially transfer companies, for transporting food and everything else. We're
asking for money to be spent not according to population,

(05:29):
but accords to the need. We have a situation where
the city of not Lynell down down south in Victoria,
they're getting more money because they've got a large population
that they don't need anymore, because all the streets are sealed,
all the everything is done well here in the territory
because of a small population gets more money when our

(05:50):
need is much much bigger, ecrologic better, so we're all
sharing the same lifestyle and the same condition. And the
radition of the road.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Something you'll be pushing for.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
When I've got thousand clocks of roads and i get
very little well down in Glenheld or somewhere else they've
got a small kilometers of roads, they get millions of dollars.
That's not fair. The good thing is not only me,
but the same people advocate is the Brisbane Lord Mayor
for Queensland and the best Lord Mayor for Remote Western Australia.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
On something you and I've spoken about a lot over
the last couple of weeks and I don't have a
lot of time to go into it, but he sees
parking meters, the changes to the parking meters in the city.
Even last week I was in the city myself and
some tourists were complaining about not being able to get
it to work properly. It's it's obvious there's going to
be a transition period here and it's going.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
Well for just to find all the spiking medis replaced
them within twenty four hours. Actually, as we speak, the
companies that want the contract, they had a represent up there,
had a surveillance and they're flying parking meters from New Zealand.
The new parking meters will be photo cells, solar panels
at the top. They will take the application, they will
take the credit card and they will take the debit

(07:04):
card as well. So the ones you go shopping and
you're paying willies and calls. That will take that as well.
If you have a problem, Now, if you scan the
QR cod there you can end it the application as
a guest. You don't have to do any registered. You
can download the application if you want to. And if
you've got any problem, please call us or come into
the council and our people will help you to set up.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
So if you don't have a smart phone, your bugget bicycle.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Well the reality is nobody, no, nothing else in Australia
worked without a smart phone. And the other thing, of
course is at the moment we had an uptake another
fifteen percent uptake of the application. We had already seventy
to seventy five percent people using the cast.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
What happens so if someone gets a fine over the
last couple of weeks, so you can a wive the look.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
We very very flexible unless there's a reason why you
get you get a fine. The other day I saw
three cars parked in an area next to each other
or had fine, so it must be an obvious reason
for that. But that's a year before. You don't have
to get a fine if you haven't got the application
you get download the application, but don't try to do
it when you actually trying to park. You can do
it anytime you can find any time. The same application

(08:10):
is used in the waterfront. Because you got the waterfront,
you have the same problem and also the same application
it's used in other states.

Speaker 1 (08:17):
Is a council maybe going to like for some of
our scene is that don't have a smartphone or they
aren't able to use this because they don't have a smartphone.
Is there something else that the council might be able
to do with them?

Speaker 2 (08:28):
You can use the debit card, the debit card, because
at the moment you don't get money in your hands,
your pension goes to bank and you have a debit card.
You salary goes to the bank, you have a debit card.
The debit card you can actually get.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
There, so you'll be able to do that once system
is upright and.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Go pay pay a wave. And the other thing I
found out the other days, if you actually download the application,
you can even use the card they've got that what
they call it the safety card that people with them
that decide to put their income.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I know what you mean.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Greek card. Yeah yeah, I can't remember the name of
escapes me, but you can even use that one. You
use the application. Look, change is always difficult. I understand that,
But the reality is money at the moment people very
few people use money everywhere. I actually my co wife
completely don't have money in my pocket. I never carry
money my pocket anymore. I've got a debit card. Everywhere
I go. I can pay for my coffee with a

(09:22):
debit card.

Speaker 1 (09:23):
All right, somebody's just emailed through and said, Katie, can
you please find out who's paying for the mayor's visit
to go fishing?

Speaker 2 (09:30):
This is a We've got our own account as a
lord mayors. We pay in subsidy. We pay membership fee,
all of us and when they I go down there,
they pay for me. When they come up here, we
pay for.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
Them something that the council's having a foot the bill.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
For well, we pay and now your subsidy which sometimes
if I go down to Melbourne, my expense is much
much bigger met by the If the Melbourne is the
Lord Mayor of Melbourne is the chairman, they cover the costs.
But this is part of the job. Because we can
spend a bit of money, we can bring back Barnett
to the territory and Darwin as an example, so we

(10:04):
know how much it's costing. I don't know that, can't
give you a figure. But before we're spending a few
thousand dollars, we'll bring you seven and a half million
dollars and money to do a casurina swimming pool and
other things around town.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
Con, I'm gonna have to leave it there because we're
going to head across to the National News. Good to
speak with you, as.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
Always do you and I hope you feel better.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Thank you, Thanks Con. That's the Lord made the convat
