Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Lord Mayor joining us on the phone this morning
as he's attending the National General Assembly as I understand it,
in Canberra. Convat Scarlets, good morning to you.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Good morning from a very wet and a very cold
canbra Kadie, Oh god, what.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Is going on in Canberra? What are you doing there?

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Well? I was attending the National General Assembly of the
Australia Local Government Association and actually fourteen out of the
seventeenth Council from the territory. They have center preserves down here.
It's an opportunity to meet each other, but also an
opportunity to meet different ministers. And this morning I hadmas
first meeting with Minister King, who is the Minister for
Infrastructure and Local Government.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
And what was on the agenda with Minister King? Are
you advocating for some additional funding for Darwin.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Con not only for Darwin, for the Northern Territory. We
have brief them about the situation with the local territory,
the new initiatives by the territory government about the reform
of the territory local government. Yes, we ask for more funding.
We are also spoke to here about the need for
age care facilities here in the territory in the regions

(01:05):
and also the increase of the number of GPS. They
have to find a way to increase a number of
GPS to be available not only in Darwin but also
in the regional centers in the territory.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Con that is, We've been speaking about that earlier this
morning with Louke Gosling, the Member for Solomon, but also
speaking a bit earlier on the show as well, we
had the Health Minister Stave Edgington on not talking so
much about the GPS with Stave Edgington, but certainly you know,
talking about the care for our aged territories. I mean,

(01:36):
on any day across the Northern Territory at the moment
we've got between sixty and eighty age care patients.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
In hospital gates and it's going to get worst care.
You have to remember that the number of people that
choose to retire in the territory, either from their own
free week or because they can't go back where they
come from, it's increasing. We've got a lot of migrants
that actually they aged here the good family here, uncle
back in the country of origin because they would miss
their family, so they stay here. These people have to

(02:05):
go somewhere and families in some cases they are unable
to look after them, especially when they get very old
and they need special care.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
So Corn, what will be you advocating for with Minister
Catherine King? Was it some you know funding for additional
like you know, further age care facilities.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
We actually ask her to engage the common with government
to actually spend money in the regions because we're not
the only ones. Western Australia and Northwestern Australia and North
Queensland is the same. We said, it's about time instead
of relying on the private sector which is not coming,
the federal government has to step in, has to put
the money to organized to have these facilities.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
All right, con moving along, I just want to ask
I understand that there's a tree that needs to be
removed at the Perrap shops. It's a mature Hills fig tree.
It's going to be removed on Thursday. How come the
councils had to get rid of that tree or going
to have to get rid of us?

Speaker 2 (02:57):
We pay for the mistakes made in the past. Times
in the past we plant the trees in the wrong
place without taking consideration. What will happen where the tree
grows up, how big is going to grow and will
impact the surrounding environment. What we find out is the
roots of the tree is impacting the foundation of the
building near it, and also footpaths and everything else. It's
the same story kady trees were planned before. They look

(03:20):
great in the first ten years, and then we get
a bit older we find out the invasive roots that's
throwing and footpaths or they actually upset the foundation of buildings.
It is unfortunate we have to cut this beautiful tree.
There's nothing else we can do, otherwise we lose more assets.
Of course, we've got a policy. For every tree we remove,
we plan two more and it will be replaced with

(03:42):
to other trees in a more suitable location. We take
now extra care where we plant trees, and only special
kind of trees, try to avoid the mistakes that we
made in the past.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
And so that tree will be coming down on Thursday,
as I understand it. There will be some diversions in place,
you know, and contract is obviously on site to safely
remove us.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
We only remove trees absolutely when it's necessary, when they've
threat to human life or threat to a building or
other infrastructure.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Now coin I do want to ask you about well
about the Bundla Beach opening on Friday night, How did
that go well? The you know, the family, the park,
the bit of area down there. Had it all go?

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Was it great? It was fantastic. Who had so many
people they're queueing? Who had six food vans and people
were queuing thirty and forty in front of everyone to
get some food. It was fantastic. It was great. The
weather was absolutely magnificent. We had nearly a thousand people
turned up and not only that, but I would turn
up on Saturday morning, had been a look to see
what it looked like afterwards, and there was a part

(04:46):
in full streeing a birthday party in the barbecue area,
which actually hading know, but I found out they actually
saw a power of barbecues. So we had a really
good job there and a family with lots of kids
that trying these bicycle circuit and they all love it
and enjoy it. And the few is to die for.
You can sit down in the areas, you can bring

(05:07):
your dogs there to exercise them, You have a barbecue,
and we are going to have programs for kids, especially
during these school holidays. The Basketball Association of an authority
will be there and we already put expression of windows
from Woodvands to go and stay there on Friday and Saturday.
It is a great, great facility. You miss out, go

(05:28):
and have a look. You'll be amazed. So one of
the best places in Darwich.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
I will I'll make sure that I go and check
it out. Con Has the council got much else planned
for the school holidays?

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Have we? Well, the thing is we've got laundry week
holidays and we have to give a break to the people,
especially the parents. We're going to have opportunities for young adults,
teens and children. Some of the highlights. We're going to
have creative sessions like making dream cotches, bracelets and loom bands,
game tournaments, gaming after Dog, they keep up the steam

(06:00):
Zone for science, tech and engineering.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Fun.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Just go on our website site and find out what
should your children's age and go have a look, have
fun and enjoy the beautiful weather and reconnect with your children.
Sometimes we focus too much at work and we tend
to forget that kids needs parents. So that's an opportunity
to go out and play with your children and reconnect

(06:23):
with them.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Ha. Go a couple of listener questions. I've got one
here that's come through saying good morning, Katie. Keen to
see what the mayor has to say about the council
site where the civic center is. Apparently there are Chinese
graves there, and Judith had messaged in to say that
we've now got two thousand archaeologists in town keen to

(06:44):
dig up the site. I don't know, you know what
the situation is there with the is there Chinese graves
there at that new civic center project?

Speaker 2 (06:53):
I can tell you what the Chinese graves are in
its old Chinese cemetery next to Tech target bren And Drive.
What we know that's underneath that side is the old tunnels,
and we knew that, and you knew that for a
long time. Deconizing control of the site. They already put
in place an archeology management plan and they're engaging in

(07:14):
archaeologists to actually have a look at the site to
make an assessment. You know, we have found different all
things in Darwin. We have found an old column that
was given to the city of Darwin in nineteen fifty
six by visiting Japanese ship that was found in the
back of a barber shop somewhere in Kavanagh Street. Don't
forget this statue that we found out at the fish

(07:37):
feeding area in the tree which now it's in the museum. Down'
is an old city and we keep finding all things.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
It's not a Chinese drive from your perspectives there.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
From look, nobody will put a car pack if there
were Chinese graves there, because there are Chinese people that
have continued presence in Darwin and they will know where
they are. But there are certainly DICO is going to
do a survey, engage the people, they know how to
do it, and they will find out what's done there.
All right.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
On another one that I keep getting messages about, and
you and I have spoken about this on so many occasions,
the work on Smith Straight. Those business owners back in
contact after receiving update twelve on the streetscape works to
say that the work is now not going to be
complete until September. That is according to paperwork that they've
sent through to me.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Let me tell you, on Friday twenty seventh of June
the fencing will come down in the area in front
of the shops, and every week after that more work
would be completely towards the banks and will Wards. I
don't know who is putting this information out. I'll find
out about it, but let me tell you, I've been
advised by the CEO today this morning that the fence

(08:48):
in front of the shops will be coming down on
the twenty seven or June.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
Okay, chis, I've got this update in front of me
that was actually issued by the City of Darwin, so
you know, it's the project overview, so it is literally
there in black and white Update twelve, mister.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Pert overview, but also the year before. Things are changing
because we're take into consideration the needs of the business
to operate understurbed and the fencing in front of the
shops who come down on Friday, twenty seventh auctions.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
But the estimated end date of the project. So yes,
so I get what you're saying that some of those
fence works are going to come down, but the estimated
end date is the nineteenth of September.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
That it's actually the when we actually complete the whole
project at the very end towards Woolwards. So we are
working as soon as possible to accommodate the needs of
the businesses and that's what will happen this week.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
Con that is incredibly frustrating for those businesses.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
Well, I'd love to be able to do things over night,
Unfortunately with I can't. And also this project, I said
the year before, it was specified when to completely, how
to be done and when to be done by the
previous government that actually handed to us. We do our
best weekend to accommodate the businesses and we before remember before,
we're talking about sometime at the end of August. Now

(10:04):
it's actually the business part. It will finish this week.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
But then the other work is still continuing right up
until September.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
Well, I didn't have any complaint from Naja, I didn't
have any complaint from the empty vacant shop, So obviously
the people that were really really concern about now it's
the businesses, because it's a drive and a lot of
people and we want them to do business as much
business as possible. The others can be done later, but
we will accelerate it and every week we'll be delivering

(10:32):
a part of the project.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
All right, Colin, we are going to have to leave
it there. We've got to head across to the National News.
Good to catch up with you. Thank you very much
for your time. This morning, and.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
I hope you enjoyed the hot weather because I don't
enjoy the cold.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
No, I wouldn't like it. Good on, you can't thank you.
Thanks morning, you too,
