Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now, we don't usually bring our general manager into the studio,
(00:03):
but it is. Well. First off, I've got Sarah Paslick
in the studio with me as well. Good morning, Sarah.
And then we've got Michael Harvey. Mike Harvey, our general manager,
has been our general manager here at Mixed one oh
four nine and Hot one hundred well for the past
twelve years, and today is your last day.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Morning Katie. Oh twelve years I've successfully avoided being in
your studio.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Yeah, got some questions. Oh look, it's been such a
it's been a massive you know, I've been here for
ten years now. Sarah is about the same. You know what,
you really you've been my boss, the adult in my
work life for longer than anybody else.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
A minute, can we just like remember that Mike is
the adult that also everyone in the build, but he's
a bit of a kid at heart himself. I've never
met anyone who loves a day as much in your
time here.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
You've got to say firework, mate, Yeah, well, the Sandman fireworks,
the new building. I've got to take credit.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
You got to take credit for that.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
But it's just been a wild ride for twelve years.
It's just been extraordinary.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
I was thinking about it and I was like, what's
one of the highlights for me? Now? One of the
things that you got me to do over my ten
years was an outside broadcast from the Tap Bar at
nine o'clock in the morning, and there's a photo of
us having a drink. I reckon it about I don't
know what time the bar even. We waited. We waited,
(01:37):
and then we're like, all right, it's go time. I
love that.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
That's what you remember. I think I'm more with what
he let me say on the radio, Like we had
a competition called the Drake Great jerk Off for the
jerky competition.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Oh yeah, it's qualified. It was about beef ch It's beeferkey,
Yes it was. It was an occasion that I or
a competition. I don't know if you get away with that.
Down south to the Gold Coat where you going?
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Are excited to be going to the gold Case.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Look, I'm going to miss this place. There's no two
ways about it. I mean, obviously, when I first came
up here, we were in the old Pierre Street studios.
And for ever anyone who's ever came to our studios
the old studios, I apologize and you know, we transitioned
out of them into this fantastic new facility. But then
you look back over the twelve years of you know
Mix one O four point nine and also you know
(02:25):
our sister stationed down the Hall one hundred and you know,
we have more staff now than we did ten years
ago when I first got here twelve years ago, which
is testament to the power of radio. Our audience has increased.
We have more listeners now than we did twelve years ago.
We've got a great team. I think both stations are
heavily embedded into the community. You'd be flat out finding
(02:48):
a particular part of the community. We're hot Mix and
you know our Kicks Country station aren't sponsoring somebody, you
know we are. We're an integral part of this community.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
And we yeah, we're still very local.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Yeah you're able to leave here.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
And yeah, yeah, both stations full of local announcers. You know,
the company is passionate about keeping as local and Darwin
deserves it. It's just been such a wonderful place. It's
just it's allowed us to do things we would never
have got away with down South. And I think that's
that's the spirit of the station.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Before Territory Day, Like I can't believe he's coming back
Territory Day.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
I've got a plan it. So obviously we depart tomorrow,
but then we need to be back. I just need
to keep an eye on one more Territory Day to.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Just make sure we don't do anything crazy. Yeah, well,
I'll tell you what, it's been a massive twelve years.
I mean, as I said, I joke, but you've been
my boss for the large majority of my adult life
and through some tough times. I think it's definitely worth
you know, I do want to say that you've been
our boss since the late great Pete Davies passed away.
(03:59):
You know, I'll never forget at that studio that morning
in the studio and having to let Territorians know the
absolutely tragic news and then walking out and you know,
walking into a beer hug from your general manager is
not something that you get from everybody, but it's something
that a good boss does, is a support their staff,
and that's something that you've always done an incredible job
(04:20):
of as our general manager. And that's why this place is,
that's why we're all so happy on air, and that
is why we all love our jobs, because that comes
from the top, so I'm really grateful for that. I
thank you for everything that you've done as my boss
over the last ten years. I know I've had plenty
of complaints and plenty of people that are happy as well.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
We don't have to Mentionine exactly how much you had
to do it for you.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
And you know, I go back to that day, you know,
when when we got the news that Peter had passed away,
and you know, even now, that's tough to talk, it is,
and you know, having to watch you go into the
studio and you were very close to Pete and make
that announcement was a heartbreaking and tough day. And I
think Pete would be very proud of what you've achieved
(05:11):
and what the stations have achieved.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
You know, Yeah, I think he definitely would.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
Yeah, I remember, I think he'd be proud of all
of us, To be bluntly honest about it. You know,
he was.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Still able to push you around a little bit though.
He used to finish his show nearly half an hour early,
and you didn't say anything.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
I'm just I'm fringing it up well, and Sarah and
I both produced him say I've timed out I'm just
going out for a smoke.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Then seven songs in a row.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Fun now, But now we have to hug Michael Moon.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
I know, we've got to give him one of those
beer hunts. I think he needs it. Halves. What's been
the what has been the most memorable, the most fun
moment for you?
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Oh, we were talking about this and it's just so hard,
you know. I think I think one of the really
pleasing memories was when the sad Man got stolen and
we found it not burnt out. Yeah, the sense of relief.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Can I just tell our listeners that half streets the
same man like his baby.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
You're taking it with you, right, maybe, but you're so right.
And it was radio like they knew they could call
the station and they're did you know your guys?
Speaker 2 (06:26):
So there was that. I mean, look all the crazy
stuff we got to do, you know, like the great
jerkof festival and the loose Moose, you know, when we
had our own mobile pub there for a while, just
on one thing to do. And you're right, and I
think it's it's one thing that you know, the one
thing that we love about Darwin and that we in
the media and we in the community really need to
(06:47):
protect is freedom. Is just this freedom. We don't need
rule after rule after rule after rule, which seems to
be the way everywhere else is going. Darwin, you know,
we've still got that frontier spirit where people act on
personal responsibility as opposed to because that's how you have to.
That's how we run the radio stations. That's why I
think we've been so successful. That's why I think you
(07:09):
guys have been so successful. As long as we keep
that spirit up, you know, keep that spirit alive, I
think we'll always will always be a massive part of
this community, and Darwin will always be a massive part
of me.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Have fun with the rules where you're going, and we'll
call you.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
I'll tell you and let you know what crazy shit
we're up to. Mike Carvey, the general manager here at
Mix one O four point nine and and of course
Hot one hundred, thank you. Thanks for everything you've done
for us over the last twelve years. We are going
to truly miss you.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Please don't go Yeah, alright,
