Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining me on the line is the Greens member for Nightcliff,
Kat McNamara. Good morning, Catnic Katie Cat. What is going
on in Nightcliff at the moment.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
I know, Look, it's been a really really tough time,
and I mean, look, it's a tough time every heere,
but obviously with everything that's happened to the Fiak family
just kind of reverberated out the distressed and trauma. What
happened at the grocer. Look, it's been awful and people
are really very very they're hurting at the moment.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Yeah, we'll hurting absolutely. And then I mean what happened
yesterday afternoon with this situation where you've got a fifteen
year old which is who is allegedly armed with a
metal bar and smashing cars as they're driving past at
two o'clock in the afternoon.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Yeah, yeah, I had someone call it and tell me
about that. I haven't been able to get on to
the police. I'm not sure what the police response was there,
but look, I know we are having Look, it's a
daily well I don't know daily thing across the territory
in all kinds of areas, but I know that we
are struggling with this, but it's something that you know,

(01:11):
Look since I obviously before I got in, before I
got elected, I knew talking to the community. And look
I live in the community too, so I absolutely know
you know, the concerns and issues around anti social behavior
or criminal criminal activities. It's a big deal. And so
I mean it's something that I work on, I would
say every day in the electorate. I mean, we've got
people I'm very open with having my door open to

(01:32):
anyone wants to come visit me. So I you know,
anyone who wants to get appointment with me can, I'll
always make time. And so myself and my electorate office
staff work really hard with a lot of local constituents,
doing particularly a lot of one on one stuff with
you know, people who've experienced crime or been a victim
of crime. But I also been working really closely with
particularly a lot of the local housing providers. We know

(01:53):
we've got a lot of public housing, so with Mission Australia,
Venture Housing and also Saint Vincent, the pall Sat Vinish
run Osham. How So there's been a lot of work
sort of getting to understand the issues and what we
can do as a community on the ground to try
and olive. You.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Well, something's got to happen. I'm not sure if you're aware,
but there's also there was a woman found unconscious in
Rapid Creek So we got notification of this that occurred
yesterday evening, So the police calling for information after a
woman was located seriously injured on a bike path near
the intersection there of Holland Place in Rapid Creek Road

(02:32):
yesterday afternoon. We also there was four women who were
indecently touched along the foreshore while they're out exercising over
the last couple of weeks. And then we know in
that situation it's a person under the age of fifteen
has now has now been charged in relation to those

(02:55):
in decent assaults.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
It's horrific. I'm really really upset for the victims and
for the people that have had to experience this stuff
because it's just obviously we all know it's absolutely not
on and it's so not okay for people to just
they deserve to go out live their lives, walk along
the foreshore, you know, be safing their home whatever it
may be.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Yeah, people are furious. I've got to tell you, our
text line is going off this morning. I've got one
here from jan It says Katie. Crime is out of control.
While the rhetoric is always it's not acceptable. Clearly it
is because it's continuing. Somebody else had said Katie, with
all that's going on in Nightcliff, where's the local member?

(03:38):
Another on the issue of Nightcliff and Rapid Creek. It
started after Vinnie's opened with the food on dick Ward Drive.
Go past the Litchfield apartment. You can see the number
of windows that are boarded up, the rubbish everywhere. Somebody
else saying Katie, the missus is super keen to go
to the Sea Breeze Festival on the weekend, but he's

(04:00):
worried about safety.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
And Look, I can assure people that I mean that
I've been working, especially since the incident at the grocer.
I think I've had maybe one day off it was
my five year old's birthday party. But I have been
flat out out in the community doing whatever I can.
If people also want to, I do have been updating
on my social media, particularly around that incident as things
were changing, and letting the community know. Look, I can

(04:26):
also assure people that I've been also basically after the
incident I managed to organize a meeting. It was I
think quite productive between all the local or It was
an open invite to the local businesses in the area
and I got to the table representatives from the police,
Laroche and Nations, their Vincent DePaul Mission Australia and Venture
Housing and it was the idea that look, we've all
got a piece to play in this. Sure, there are

(04:48):
like big policy decisions that can happen to things that
are out of my control, that's in the government or
police resourcing, but we all have a piece to play
in this and can we just get our heads around
the table to see what we can do to start
making some positive change. And so from that meeting, Laroche
Nation is now running. They're doing a trial for the
next month. They're sending ranges to particularly on the night

(05:08):
keep shop era. I guess there's a bit of a
hotspot area that a lot of people talk about, I
think with that incident with the poll happened, and so
they're sending ranges I think at times around six am,
eleven am and around sixtym I believe three times a day.
And I know after that trial I'll be getting some
more feedback from the shop owners about how they feel
if that's helped. We're also working on a plan to

(05:29):
try and request that the government paid for private security
a lot of the young the shop owners have requested,
but that's what they want to that area. So look,
there are options.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
Yeah, is it time to push for some of that
high density public housing social housing that's in Nightcliff to change.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Well, I think I'm very cautious of painting people who
live in public housing with the same brush because I
mean I've worked with people in public housing definitely every week,
if not every second day, and they also want to
feel safe. You know, the overwhelming majority are doing the
right things and they're really copying it as well.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
What about when visitors arrive though, and aren't doing the
right thing?

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Yeah, and I think that's that's definitely some of the
issue that we're seeing. And that's why even faunidly members
and people in public housing that you know, they're also
suffering from that. And look, that's something that I think
Lara Kia Nation does good work with. And I know
there's a return to Country program that runs out of
I think it's in Casarina. But there are also things
that I'm going to be pushing for so with the
local police station. We all know the issue with that

(06:35):
tune is really frustrated that it didn't turn out as promised,
But I want to get the government to say, well,
if you can't fill it with police, and I understand
police are under resource and struggling well a I have
written to the Police Minister requesting that I wrote this
a couple of months ago and I still haven't received
a reply that the police station extended hours capacity be increased.

(06:55):
But there are other things we can do. Right the
building is already there, it's already built. Can we pop
in some lary Nation ranges? Can we pop in other
services that are going to help alleviate some issues that
we're seeing, Like let's let's use that space.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
What about Saint Vinnie's. I mean, do you believe that
there's been an increase in issues as a result of
Saint Vinnie's moving closer to that area? And I'm in
no way you know, Saint Vinnie's, I know, do an
incredible job, but unfortunately it is a situation where it's
you know, it is a service that people are then
coming to the area to utilize, and for whatever reason,

(07:31):
it seems as though Nightcliff has got a large number
of visitors in the area at the moment, and unfortunately,
you know, from everything that we've read out, people are
not doing the right thing.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
Yeah, So I've been also in a lot of communication
with Hinni's. I've gone there and gone in the morning
at seven am to see the breakfast program and to
meet the people working there and people utilizing that service.
I think from what I'm hearing from them, because I
do talk to them quite frequently, is that they're so
what that they take care of their or the use
that service. So generally they're over sixties. A lot of

(08:04):
dishes I think that we're seeing with youth and people
trying to draw that line. It's not necessarily there. Of course,
you know, I can't account for every person that goes
through Vinis, but I do know that they say they
take really good care to make sure, you know, from
their point of view, from what I've heard, they say
that people they come on the bus, they come use
the service, they get back on the bus, and they
go back to wherever they're staying or sleeping. And I

(08:27):
look overall, I think people are people with a full
bellley who've been able to access medical care and have
a shower if they're going to be on the better
off having that if they're going to be on the streets,
are not at all. But look, Vinny's do they have
a plan for more appropriate accommodation that that's not there?
We know where I think it's the DCA approval runs
out in about eighteen months, so that they themselves say

(08:48):
they know that location is not great, they actually would
refer to be somewhere else and provide a really a
proper built service. But yeah, look, I've.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
Got a message to a listener. High Katie, could you
please mention what happened in Nightcliff and what continues to
happen in Nightcliffe at the moment. For at least two
weeks now, groups of people have been holding up traffic roundabout,
smashing up cars with metal bars and trying to open
up doors. Yesterday, a very large group of mid teens

(09:19):
to early twenties, most wearing ankle bracelets, male and female,
were seen at the dick Wor Drive roundabout heading towards
the village. I'd love to know how such a large
number twelve to fifteen were walking around in the middle
of the day with the bracelets on. My daughter's car
was next in line to get smashed with a metal
bar while she was stuck at the roundabout. Now, this

(09:43):
person said that there was many cars damaged, heard of
a number of vehicles being damaged. When is there going
to be action? When is the government going to act?
When will the police act? Is it when an innocent
person kills one of these little terrorists out of anger

(10:04):
and ends up in jail, It's bloody ridiculous. As a
business owner in the Nightcliff village, we are all so
scared and most of us had to lock our doors
yesterday in fear of these kids walking around with ankle
bracelets causing trouble. Why aren't these surveillance cameras being monitored
there are so many of them around.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
Yeah, I've also asked a question of that to the
police minister about those security cameras, because I'm obviously speaking
to the local businesses around my office in particular quite frequently,
and look incidences like that, it's terrifying I and I
would do the same things. I think some people think
that I might have a higher contact with the police.

(10:48):
I also have to call the same phone numbers that
everyone asked called, so I have cold triple zero or
the non emergency line. I've been over to the police
version to ask for assistance and been told to call
the number just like everyone else. And I know how
incredibly frush that is. And so for incidents like that
that you've just described, look, the police are saying, please
do call us. And I also hear two people say, oh,
I don't call anymore because I don't feel it gets anywhere,

(11:10):
And I had the police reinforced to me into others
saying please please do call. They really really need that
information and that data to be able to make their
decisions around resourcing and where they're going to go. So yeah,
incidents like that, please always call the police.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Kay. Look, I don't want to make this a personal thing.
I know some people are messaging through saying, you know,
what's a local member doing? Why isn't she doing more?
You know, someone saying this is what happens when you
vote green. I mean, what do you say to those people?

Speaker 2 (11:38):
Well, I think there's an element there if people are
going to have their opinions about me, regardless or their
preconceived notions that aren't perhaps based in reality, because the
fact is that I also live in the community and
I also experience this, and I'm doing everything that is
humanly possible that i can in my position. I'm not
in the government, I don't control the police resourcing, but
I'm absolutely at a ground level as in you know

(12:00):
what I can do there, but also at a higher
level in terms of advocating and trying to push for
things in Parliament at both levels, undering stuff literally every
day of the week to try and improve things.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
Well. Cat macdamara, the Green's member for Nightcliff, I appreciate
your time this morning, Thank you for calling in to
come on the show. Appreciate it. And look, please let
us know if there is an update on the private
security that you guys like that obviously you're pushing for,
or anything else. I know the people a Nightcliff are
hurting at the moment and really, you know, very upset

(12:36):
about the state of what is going on right now.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
No, I know, Katie, I know, and I just want
to assure everyone and once again you can get in
contact with my office, come by or shoot us an email.
And I really I'm feeling the pain in the community
and I'm looking to how we can turn things around.

Speaker 1 (12:55):
Cap Mac Damara, thank you, thanks for your time today.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
Thanks so much, Katie, thank you, Nick,
