Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, if you listen to this show regularly, you'll definitely
know that I love hearing about young people doing incredible stuff. Now,
my next guest is seventeen years old. She has bought
home gold for the Northern Territory after competing in a
championship event in Bangkok in March. But her list of
achievements is long and she is preparing at the moment

(00:23):
to make her professional debut at an upcoming contest in Darwin. Now,
I am very pleased to say that joining me in
the studio is Skyler Chatterton. Good morning to you, Skyler,
Good morning, and of course your coach, the wonderful Corey
Implements from Manho Academy, Mootai, Good morning to you.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Good morning Katie.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Wonderful to have you both in the studio now, Skyler, firstly,
tell me about this trip to Thailand and how it
all went.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Yeah, it went good, flew down. There had two bouts
while I was there, for UK first which I won
that convincingly, and then for the girl from what's it
called Kyrgyzstean and then won that convincingly as well to
get the gold medal.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
How awesome, Skyler. How long have you been doing muay Thai.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
For I've been training for ten years now.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Ten years. It's what made you get into the sport.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
My order brother, Connor started training with Corey and then
kind of just followed him.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
And does your brother still still do the sport?

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Uh? Sort of? Sort of? Yah?

Speaker 1 (01:29):
Yeah, I reckon.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
It's awesome.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
Like I love seeing young people do great stuff in sport,
but I love seeing young women do sports that maybe
you're a little bit outside the box as well, that
people might not expect you to do. I just think
it's incredible. But the fact is, in a sport like mutai,
it is it's hard training, right, It's a lot of training,
but you must be fit as a fiddle.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
I like to think.

Speaker 4 (01:54):
So, Yeah, Corey, talk us through, I mean talk us
through sort of how Skylar reached the point where she's
then competing in Thailand against people from all over the world.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, Katie, no problems that look. Muy Thai are now
global sport.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
It's going to be ed in.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
The Olympics probably about twenty and thirty two in the
Bristoll Olympics, which would be awesome. And as a individual sport,
it's a long road and you have an amateur and
professional career. Skylar's achievements over the last four years, outside
of ten years of training, have been on the international scale.
So we've now fought four times internationally Bangkok, Turkey, Qualum

(02:36):
from Malaysia. And if you think about it as maybe
this way to capsulate it, her Entry fight, excuse me,
her Entry fight for this year's competition wf WIS she
won the.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
World Championships gold.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Her first fight was the current World Kickboxing Champion from
the UK. Wow, that's the difference. Yet, you're not just
going into a competition where you're trying to work and
get some experience.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
She'd still going up against the best of the best.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
She was invited to part of the team qualified with
a record fighting everybody from Russia to Sri Lanka to
many other countries right over the last four years, as
well as fighting in Australia by the way, and achieving
the WMC World Multi Council Australian Youth Champion and of
course a number of other accolades.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Skylar, I mean, that's incredible, Like, it's absolutely incredible what
you've done. Are you still at school?

Speaker 3 (03:26):
Yeah, I'm in my last year of school, so how.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
Do you juggle like year twelve and your studies and
training and competing at this level?

Speaker 3 (03:36):
Skylar always been like that, so it's just the usual
for me. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
And how many hours a week do you reckon you're
putting into training?

Speaker 3 (03:45):
Oh well, chove five days a week, sometimes six days
a week, So I don't even know.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Yeah, yeah, but it sounds like you don't might like it.
Sounds like you love.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
It what I've been doing, It's what I love.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
So the fact there that core ed siege, you know,
the Olympics in twenty thirty two, bit Moore tie is
going to be included as a sport, is that something
that you like? Is that something that you'd like to
aim for?

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Definitely? I think that's the top goal, as well as
being number one in the world. So just do the
rounds and get there.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Yeah, I think it's fantastic now this you're also though,
I guess your next challenge or the next thing that
you're going to be doing is fighting in Darwin and
going professional. Is that right?

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (04:32):
It must be like that must be a really special
thing for you to do, or such a huge thing
for you to do, is that?

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Yeah? Definitely, I've had twenty fights now for my amateur career,
I've been fighting for ten years, so just to take
the next step into my career and just kind of
not start fresh, but start the pro career off on
obeying in Darwin.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
How cool. So no doubt there's going to be plenty
of people wanting to come and watch.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
It was well in Darlin, Like.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
I would imagine your whole family, your friends, everybody would
feel so incredibly.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Proud her whole cheer.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Oh, they'll be going off. I reckon Cory, like, it
must be incredible for you to coach a young woman
with you know, not only that enormous skill, but it
sounds like she's an incredibly hard trainer. You know, she's
juggling school, she's juggling everything and doing it all, taking
it all in her stride by the sound of it.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Yeah, absolutely, Katie and Skyla's following a legacy of female
champions and Dawn she's not the first, you know, and
she's had the opportunity to fight with one of the
train one of the recent ones, Beck Rooney. But in
saying that it's an individual sport, you've got to put
the hard work in. Not everyone's going to be a professional,
but Skylar's got definitely the mental approach, the commitment. She's

(05:52):
quite calm and relaxing and like you know in the
shootout hearing your chat, which is good, but it's a
great platform for youth, also mentioning that she did this
year achieved the INTI Junior Sports Person of the Year, right,
So it's not just about in the ring, it's how
you carry yourself out of the ring and that consistency
and not to be distracted. And look, she gets a

(06:14):
lot of support families there all the time, which is
fantastic and was shouting out for responsors. That's always good, right.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Oh for sure, go for it, you know, like this
is the thing I know it takes. It is like
it's a whole team effort, right when when young people
and and those you know, whatever age you are to
do your sport. But I know your mum's probably done
plenty of ubring you around to your sport every afternoon.
I certainly do that with my kids. But it is
a real team effat and sponsors are a huge part

(06:42):
of that as well, particularly when you've had to travel overseas.
It's a huge cost to make sure that you're able
to get that competition and to be able to take
your sport to the next level.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Yeah. Absolutely, and it's a quick thing on that. I mean,
I've been training a high level athletes for a long
time and there's always something that stands out about some
and Skoy's got certain attributes that that meet that you know,
it's not for everybody. It's an unforgiving sport, combat sport.
You touch gloves and you're on your own in the
middle of that ring. But she's got the aptitude, the
capability and the attitude to to get there. So the

(07:15):
professional debut is going to be an opportunity to begin
that journey and put a stamp on female Muay Thai
in Australia.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
When is that happening so that people can go along,
I reckon there's going to be people listening that want
to support her.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Twenty fourth and May at the Clamos Center the Garrison
Fight Challenge and there's a big card. Trent Hanson's putting
that show together from Garrison's Gym and it's going to
be a great night. There's a lot of people, a
lot of Inner state fighters, a lot of competition and
seeing the sport on that on that levels and be
very exciting for the darn crowd.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Skylar, What goes through your head when when you step
into that ring and you stare your opponent in the
eye and you you know, you go all right.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
It's on just all my training and stuff. I'm not
really one to get scared for my fights, which sounds
pretty like, oh you know, but I've just been doing
it that long. It's just the normal. It's like if
you're a forty player and you go and play a match,
it's just the normal for you.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
Oh good on you, I reckon, it's awesome. We're gonna
have to come along and try and watch and cheer
for you. Big congratulations on all of your achievements so far.
But you're seventeen years old, I reckon, You've got a
very very bright future in front of you. Thank you
so much for joining me in the studio this morning.
It's great to meet you in person. Thank you, and
Corey lovely to catch up with you as well.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Absolutely, Katie, thank you very much for up with Junny.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Thank you
