Speaker 1 (00:00):
So much sport on at the moment. We're talking AFL
last week at TiO Stadium. This weekend the Grand Finals
are on for NT Rugby Union and we know well
the NT Rugby Union B Grade is the first match
as I understand it, South's taking on the Cougars on Saturday,
and then in the women's comp well, the Dragons are

(00:22):
going to be taking on the Palmerston Crocs at six pm,
followed by the men's A grade matchup between South's and
UNI Pirates at seven point thirty. And I'm pleased to
say that joining me in the studio at the moment
the women's team the Palmerston Crocs captain Dayleen Doyle, Good
morning to you, good morning, lovely to have you in

(00:43):
this studio. And well, one of the younger players but
absolutely experienced in a little gun is Megan Barker. Good
morning to.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
You, Good morning, Katie.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Lovely to have you both in the studio. Look, it's
no secret I love sport seeing women do well in
sport and it's fantastic to have both of you in
here this morning. Dayleene. How excited are you for the
Grand Final on the weekend.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Oh, look, I'm pretty pumped. It's a big achievement for
the Palmerson Crocs women's team, especially from where we've come
and how hard we've worked over this season. Last season
we come from the bottom of the ladder minus many points,
and you know, we come back this season and decided
that we were going to work really hard with each
other as a team, not individually but as a group

(01:33):
and see what we can do. So to get to
where we are today is a massive achievement and it's
sort of a bit of a surreal feeling for our girls.
I think, so we're pretty pumped.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Locke, tell me a bit about how you have sort
of worked so hard this season. What's some of the
stuff that you've done as a team to really make
sure that you could get to this point.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Yeah, I think we've just like really shown up for
each other this season. So it's about having each other's
back and working together as a team and you know,
putting in for each other. It's a small thing that
lead to success. It's not about doing it individually or
doing it by yourself, because we won't get anywhere. And
I think that was a tough lesson for us to
learn last season, was we weren't going to get there individually,

(02:11):
and don't get me wrong, last season showing up playing
a game every week and losing it was tough. So
coming off the back of it this season and winning
majority of our games and having the opportunity to now
be in the Grand Final has been a massive thing
for US women in Palmersan Crocs and we can't wait
to do our club proud.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
Oh so good. Tell me how's the training been going
this week?

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Oh, it's intense. The coach is on fire with his stuff.
He's definitely feeling the emotions as well. I think, so
it's been quite intense. We actually are training tonight and
I think it'll be a big session and definitely won't
be an easy one. I think he'll definitely put us
through the rings tonight.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Megan, you're seventeen and you're in the women's eye grade team.
I mean that's like, that's pretty massive for a teenager.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yeah, it was pretty cool though.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
It was exciting.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
You must be pumped to be in the Grand Final.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
I'm so happy about it. Like it's first season you're
in the Grand Final.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
How long have you been playing in this team?

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Oh? In the women's Like this season but for the
past about two seasons, I've been running water for them,
so I've been like getting to know them, who they are,
how they play, what their strengths are, what their weaknesses.
So I just came in this season and like all
the girls already knew me, so it was like, just
come in and I just yelled, Oh, how just slotted
into my spot?

Speaker 1 (03:37):
Oh Dayleane, what's it like? She's been running water? And
then when you're like, nah, you're coming, you are playing
with us now, Oh.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Look, I think it's definitely unreal to watch Megan on
the field and what she does. I think that she,
even though being the youngest, has a lot to teach
us or on the field as it is so for
her to come through the ranks, so like being a
junior then running water for the women's team, it's it's
amazing to see her success because she did actually take

(04:03):
out a few big awards this season.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Tell me about those, what did she wins?

Speaker 2 (04:09):
So I took her with my counterpart, Natalia Grant, like
she's a gun player. She plays union pirates and so
the Bode La Cruz Emerging Taran Award, So you are
automatically nominated for that award if it's your first season
of women's and you were young, Yeah, yep, and so
you're automatically nominated. And then just throughout the season they

(04:31):
just see how you're improving everything. And we won that
award side by side.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
Oh how good.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
And then you have Nami Roberts, who is an ex
Walleroo yep. She played locally Darwin for Parmesan Crops Crocs
and when we collapsed, she went to Dialmon Dragon. So
it's a pretty big weekend her clubs versing each other.
And that's the women's Player of the Year. And I
took that outward out with Natalia Grant as well, so

(04:56):
pick shout out to her.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
Hell awesome. It must be pumped, like you're seventeen and
you're doing that well in your first year in the
A grade site. Yeah. I think it's phenomenal. Like I
really love seeing young people do well and achieve at whatever,
you know, whether it's sport or whether it's academia, whatever
you choose to do. But I love what sport does

(05:18):
for young people. I think it provides so many opportunities.
It is such a wonderful thing to be part of
a team, and I love the way that female sport
over the last few years, particularly you know in sports
like rugby union, Rugby League AFL has just absolutely taken
off Meghan, when you first sort of started playing. What

(05:40):
age were you when you started playing rugby union like
ten yeap? And did you play with the boys?

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Yeah, definitely it was my mum just randomly signed me
up for sevens and then since then just didn't stop.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
How good and has the game Like as you look
at your own club and you look at the clubs
around Darwin, is there a lot more girl playing now
in those junior ages and what there was when you
first started?

Speaker 2 (06:04):
One hundred percent there is. There's more interest from the
girls now. It's great to see, Like you've got so
many in the under elevens coming through and in those
junior age groups, and I've got a couple in my
under five teams that I coach yep, so it's pretty
exciting to see that they want to follow through now.
And then under fourteen girls is massive, so it's pretty

(06:24):
exciting to see that there's more coming through.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
I was gonna ask you about that, So you coach
the under fives as well? Oh, that'd be so cute,
Like how do you juggle all of that and juggle
you know, your your studies and everything.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Also, I got pretty good time management. And when I'm
in school, like I do all my work and I
get done quickly, like I always have feedback from my
teachers yep. And then so I train pretty much five
days a week. So I've got Pathways training, which is
like rep for NT. So I do that on a
Monday and a Wednesday, and then on Tuesdays it's seventeen's

(06:57):
training and then women's and that's pretty it's what it
is like. They don't clash. I just follow over. And
then on Thursday, I miss like half an hour of
my seventeens training to train my under fives, and then
I just move on to each training. And on Friday night,
obviously I coach under fives and then I go and
play my seventeens game.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Afterwards, and your referee as well, don't you Yeah? Oh
sounds like my life growing up.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
I love that.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
I love I love the fact that you are so
involved in the sport. And it sounds like you're training
so hard. Is there somewhere that you're hoping that the
sport takes you are You're hoping to be able to
play maybe at a national level.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
Yeah you know, yeah, yeah, I want to make it
to like the super w like, yeah, you possibly a
Wallaroo at one stage, Like I want to make it big,
So really put in the you see it?

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Oh Dayleene? Do you love playing with somebody young like Megan?
Who you're I mean you don't look very old yourself,
Let's be honest.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
For me, it's really like I'm among myself for a
young daughter. And I think watching the younger kids go
through the process is something I never had the opportunity
to do. I obviously come later. So watching them all
come through and being an inspiration to them and encouraging
them that this is something they can do is quite
a beautiful thing. Because Megs is also playing in the
seventeenth Grand Final this weekend as well on Friday night,

(08:13):
and then she'll play in the Women's Grand Final on Saturday.
But I think, yeah, I think women in union and
league and like women are the next big thing. I
think women in sport is growing and the opportunities that
will come for them is amazing to see.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
Yeah it is. It's so nice, isn't it. As a
mum of a I mean, I've got a teenage daughter, thirteen,
and I just think it's so nice to see the
opportunities for girls as they're coming up through the ranks now,
you know, to see the different, different things that you're
able to do, I think is wonderful.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
Yeah, absolutely yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
Now all right, so what so for Saturday six pm
the Grand Finals kicking off? What are the details for
anybody who's wanting to watch. Just turn up, be there
and get ready to watch some first class footy. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
Look, I think get gone and support all the teams
from B grades through to A grade. It'll be a
good afternoon. I think that the girls' game is definitely
one to watch. It gets pretty intense out there and
I think both teams have a lot to fight for.
So if you're wanting to watch this, come down to
Rugby Park in Maura, and I think it's a five

(09:19):
dollar entry fee for anyone that's not playing, and yeah,
all the fun will kick off from there.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
Well, we're going to be catching up with the Dragons
Rugby Union vice captain Bianka scrim Draw in a couple
of moments as well, so we'll find out how they're feeling.
Just before I let you go. I asked this of
the AFL teams last week. Any superstitions, anything that you're
sort of taking into the Grand Final that you're worried
about doing or not doing before Saturday or Friday for you,

(09:46):
absolutely not.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
I think that we've got nothing to lose, so we'll
definitely give it at all and be ready for a
good game. This is something we've wanted to be a
part of for so long now, for many years. It's
something that Palmerston Cross girl haven't been a part of,
so I think we'll go definitely go into it open minded,
a good mindset and give it out all.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
Well, it is wonderful to have you both in the
studio this morning, Palmerston Crocs rugby union captain Dayleene Doyle
and Megan Barger. Our little junior gun, well not even
you're playing in the seniors now, but you're an absolute gun.
Wonderful to have you both in the studio. Thank you
so much for your time this morning.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
No, thank you, no, good luck.
