Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now, there is always plenty happening around the place, and
there's always a lot happening on our roads. Now joining
me in the studio right now is Superintendent Rick mcgree.
Good morning to you, Rick, Yeah, very well, thank you.
And I've also got Senior Sergeant Dev kanyel Maz Good
morning to you.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Good morning Katie.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Yeah, really good, great to have you both in the
studio now. You guys are obviously both from the Road
Safety Division. Is that what I refer it to it as, Yes,
Territory Road Safety Division, and there has there is always
quite a bit happening on our roads. We know that. Unfortunately,
we've had a couple of you know, pretty serious incidents

(00:38):
in recent days. Now I do want to ask you
about and I know that this is not probably a
huge amount that you can say following on from the
tragic buggy crash that had happened in girwayin a forty
year old man's life lost. You know, from all accounts,
a great bloke who is you know, a wonderful member
of the community. And you know, I think a reminder

(01:02):
in whether you're talking about on our roads or wherever
you're talking about, being in a vehicle. The impact that
loss of life has on the entire community when something
like this happens.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Yeah, it's absolutely huge. And that's what was so passionate
about what we do is because you do see the
effects of it when it goes wrong unfortunately, like it
did tragically on the weekend. So you know, the advice
to everyone is just in those certain circumstance, if you're
on the road or even on the beach or on
your property, is still remember that it is really dangerous
and where all the safety protecting equipment and you know,

(01:38):
slow down and have a think about what you can
do to make that as safe as possible for yourself
and other people around.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Now. Unfortunately, yesterday morning as well, we started to get
messages coming through about a crash at Humpty Do dev.
Is there much of an update on that one.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yeah, so yeah, Unfortunately yesterday we had an accident out
it's a Humpty Do where a semi trailer pulled over
an emergency situation where just the lost operation vehicle veered
off from its path and unfortunately motorcycle rider collided with
the vehicle. He's currently still at hospital in a serious condition.

(02:17):
We will be updated in due course in relation to that.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
So still in hospital at this point in time. It
sounded like it was pretty nasty, certainly from the messages
that we're getting on the tech sign yesterday, people letting
us know that there was obviously traffic diversions in place.
Did it take a while to sort of, you know,
to get everything back up and running out there.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Yeah, Look, these situations do take time to investigate to
make safe, which you know, those inquiries investigations will continue
on Look, we just urge drivers to just take care
on the roads, just look ahead and just look out
for each other on the road.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
Absolutely. Now in terms of the now, obviously lots happening
on the track at the think, but it's also an
opportunity also a time when I think the Northern Territory
Police are down there just making sure everyone's sort of
behaving themselves. How did it go over the weekend?

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah, it went really really well. We had quite a
large team down there focusing on the road policing aspect
of that event and just trying to make sure that
everyone had a safe event and could enjoy themselves. So yeah,
the team did really really well down there. There was
close to three thousand breath tests over that whole period,
and out of that there was thirteen people who tested

(03:35):
positive to alcohol, which again is thirteen too many, but
you know, thank you to the people who did the
right thing and ensure that everyone could have a good time.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
And drug testing also conducted.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Yeah, definitely, So that's something we've been ramping up our
drug testing. So down there we did forty two negative
drug tests and ten positive drug tests come back. So
that's again way too many, way too many, and just
people need to be aware that we are out there.
Drug testing is increasing, so expect to be drug tested
at events or just randomly as well.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
And was there I understand there was a number of
traffic infringement notices issued as well, was it? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Yep, So all up there was two hundred and fifty
four traffic infringement special do we Yeah, that would be
a variety of things from speeding, not wearing seat belts,
unregistered motor vehicles, and those real key ones that are
linked back to our fatal five. Is that quite a
high number, Yeah, that would be yeah, yeap. So ultimately

(04:34):
we'd want to be in a position where we're not
having to issue any is the reality of it but
you know, different people take their messages in different way
and that's always an outcome. If you're not doing the
right thing, particularly around those those ones that do link
to our fatal five, like our speeding and seat belts,
you know, mobile phone news, then we will be taking action.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Yeah, and not the only you know, not the only
sort of I guess you'd say proactive policing on our roads.
That happened over the weekend. There's so many dry season
events at the moment, so you guys are out sort
of you know with all of those dry season events
on the weekend as well, weren't you Definitely.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Yeah, there was lots on the weekend. We had Barunga
Festival as well, which really kicked off a good attendance rate. Again,
we're out there in force just making sure people doing
the right things on the road. Really good response, there
some good behaviors on the roads, which is good to see.
We also had the Adelaide River radeo, so yeah, we

(05:29):
had Bachelor and dal and traffic operations there as well,
along with Adelaide River supporting them. Unfortunately, we did see
a few drink drivers and infringements issued for speeding, but
overall a really good weekend. So yeah, we're really happy.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
And we've got some We've got some massive events coming
up as well, including the supercars. I mean that's always
a time when the police are pretty proactive too, aren't they.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
Yeah, definitely. So our message around these events are not
just in relation to those, but leave the racing on
the track. Ye you know, there's enough publicly organized things
if if that's a passion of yours to do it,
do it the right way and do it lawfully, and
just with all the events coming up, including the supercars,
is just to have a plan in place. So if
you plan to have a few drinks or what have you,
you know, organize a left, get a uber or a

(06:16):
taxi or something.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
Hey can I ask you both? Because we always get
messages coming through about people being struck by cars, pedestrians being.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Struck by cars.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Particularly, it seems as though that bag Itt Road area
and even around Eaten towards you know, towards Kingpin and
that there's been some issues there in recent weeks. You know,
Obviously people are wanting to be vigilant, they're wanting to
make sure that they're doing the right thing, but it
does seem as though there is people that are trying

(06:47):
to cross that road, sometimes potentially intoxicated and without their
wits about them. And it's tough then as well for
those that are driving when someone's steps out in front
of you.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Yeah, definitely, and that's why we really stress that, you know,
just to pay attention and you know, things like having
music in the car or using your phone in the car.
That's why we're so strict about that, and that's why
those laws are in place. So lots sort of what
Devil's saying earlier. Make sure you're paying attention, looking up,
you know, understand where you are, drive to the condition.
So you know, I sort of find that that sort
of change between you know, going into evening, you lose

(07:24):
your vision a little bit and things, so really just
slow down and be aware to what's happening and what's
going on.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
Is it an area that is a bit of a
concern for the police in terms of you know, pedestrian strikes.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yeah, definitely. Yeah, it is one of our hot spots
for pedestrian strikes, and it's an area we try and
do a lot of work around to try and you know,
stop people from you know, using the road in that
sort of way and you know that, but I think
when it comes to road safety, it's everyone's business. So
there's work that we're doing with pedestrians and there's also
work we're doing with drivers as well. So if we

(07:57):
can take away one of those factors and hopefully we
can avoid something tragic happening. Yeah, well look good.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
To catch up with you both this morning, Superintendent Rick
mcgrae and Senior Sergeant dev Knyl maz Good morning to
you both. Thank you for coming onto the show for us.
Thank you, thank you,
