Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jonathan Curzley is joining us now ten and nine at
US correspondent. Good morning, Jonathan, John, and good morning to you.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Clery Elsa as all your listeners across beautiful w A.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
Jonathan, I believe we might finally have some encouraging news
from the Gaza strip.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
The small Yeah. Look, yeah, this sort of true steal,
if you want to call it, that is now going
to come into effecting a matter of hours. In fact,
it will be one o'clock Perth time this afternoon that
the true steel will come into effect. It will last
for at this stage four days, and Israel is expecting
to receive thirteen hostages today that had been held by
(00:37):
how much. The detail was announced by Cutter, which has
been involved in the negotiations along with israel I must
in the United States as well as Egypt. They have
been heavily involved in these talks that have lasted some days.
The deal was signed a few days ago. As you
may well know, it was supposed to actually coming to
effect yesterday. There was a delay with that hummus actually
find it now they have so essentially we will see
(00:58):
a stop in the fighting, hopefully to allow the first
thirteen of women and children to be released. It is
going to be fifty over the course of four days,
and Israel has vowed that if if en the release
each day beyond that, then the fighting will stop for
each of those days. But this is essentially a stop gap.
(01:21):
I mean, there's more than two hundred hostages that Israel
estimates are being held by Hummas, so it could take days.
It's not a couple of weeks for all of them
to be released if this truth holts. And that's the
big question on the ground now. Is the truth going
to hold and the hostages going to be released as
Hummas has agreed to it. Could we see a longer
(01:43):
sustained pause in the fighting. That's the next big question
that needs to be answered. America has eyes on a
much longer pause, if you like, perhaps hoping to bring
an end to the fighting all together. It Israel is
saying even once this truth deal is done, even if
the hostages are all released, then there will be fight
that will continue for at least a couple of months.
(02:03):
They have always vowed to crush from us. That was
the words of Israel's part on this a Benjamintiahu. But
there are promising signs today if you like that this
truth still will come into effect that the thirteen hostages
will be released on day one. Now we wait to
see whether that is actually going to be followed through.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
So at this stage, is the truth strictly for the
logistics of transporting hostages home or will there be hopefully
some kind of talking going on as well.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Well, you're going to see more aid going to Gaza
as well, which is going to be a significant moves role.
That's that's a key cornerstone of disagreement. The fighting itself
under this agreement will have to stop in order for
those hostages to be released. Even today though that Israel
has been carrying out attacks on Gaza itself, waiting essentially
(02:52):
until that truth still comes into effect one pm Perth
time when they will allow the first of the fifty
odd hostages to be released. But even after that, Israel
is saying that the fighting will resume again. They're not
calling this a cease fire, they're not saying that this
is essentially a piece still, they're calling it a truce.
I feel like it is a stop that measure to
get one of the goals that Israel wanted out of this,
(03:15):
which is the hostages released. If that all happens, and
there's a lot of ifs still in all of this,
then you could well see a longer sustained pause. But
that's going to require more hostages to be released, and
it's going to require much more talks between the United States, Cutter, Israel, Hamas,
and Egypt to all try and formulate this jigsaw, if
(03:36):
you like, to try and piece all the pieces of
the puzzle together to achieve what Israel wants to the hostages,
and then to try and secure some sort of sustained pause.
But there are plenty more answers than there are, plenty
more questions than there are answers, right.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
And Jonathan, while all of this really important stuff is
going on, to a degree, the forgotten people, of those
people who are homeless and have lost family members and
a star, it can only be a good thing to
have to sease fighter gas. You say, get more supplies
in that they're so vital in the area.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Well, yeah, I mean you have to look to the
humanitarian situation that is taking place inside Gaza right now,
and there is no questions that it needs to get in.
And obviously America is hopeful that there could be a
American citizens, including a young three year old girl who
could be among the first of the hostages released. President
Bidens asked about that earlier, so he said he was hopeful.
But even once all of these hostages released, the question
(04:29):
is I mean, if that happens is obviously the first
if and then what happens from there. Israel is saying
as I said earlier, and there will be sustained fighting
even after the hostages if all of them are released,
are released. So this still has a very long way
to go there, and there is clearly a lot of
diplomatic pressure being put on Israel to sustain this truth. So,
(04:50):
I mean it is very difficult to see how they
won't be breaches by either side. The key piece of
this from a diplomatic perspective will be trying to hold
it for the four day is if they can hold
it for the four days, then there is hope that
it could hold beyond that, perhaps for a few more
days to allow more hostages to be released. But this
now is reaching a very crucial moment in what has
(05:12):
been a goggling and brutal cosslict in the Middle East.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
Yeah, I mean, we hate to be a cynic but
we're not dealing with a situation that acts on reasonable terms,
are we. So let's just hope that you know the
truth does hold, because it will only take one slight
move from one for the other to completely engage again.
All right, Jonathan, Well, thank you for updating us this morning,
and we will certainly keep our fingers crossed, well.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Fingers crossed this truth hold. Yeah, some people can get
out and more innocent lives can be sad.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Thanks, thanks for everything you know and putting it in
Layman's terms for us. We appreciate your time.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Thanks Jonathan more of course on Channel nine. Jonathan is
Channel nine's US correspondent.
