For our sports journo, it seems nothing is more humbling than being called out for an incorrect tweet about the BBL… than by former Australian cricket coach, Boof Lehmann. Gahhhh.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Here he is marathon man himselfe.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
How I recovered.

Speaker 3 (00:04):
Yeah, I'm feeling pretty good.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Doing ten k's and thirty five degrees.

Speaker 3 (00:08):
It's hot, but you know it's pre season man like,
so you know it's not just the players.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
You got to do to get in shape.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
You know, I've got to sometimes I've got to run
alongside it with a microphone. Yeah, true, you know, like
you got to. You gotta be ready do.

Speaker 4 (00:20):
That classic legs crossing across the oval move that we its.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
The yeahs and stuff.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
You put some music to it.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
It looks great mine.

Speaker 5 (00:31):
Yeah, unbelievable that per is so small. I walk in anywhere,
both at street Man and you run.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
It's funny least because from about one hundred meters away
it was like said, blokes, tall looks clezy. That's not clezy,
that it's clezy twin from my Yeah, as I ran past,
I was like, yep, there's the great man there he is.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
It was you, mate, Yeah, it's great.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Great to see you out there in the wild, ye,
the wild, in the worlds of aunt mate.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
It's on the heat and the scorches.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
It's unfittingly right because it's going to be thirty eight
degrees tomorrow, so it's almost as if the weather God's
knew the Heat and Scorches perfect recipe first and this
has a bit unexpected yeah at the furnace because really
the Sixers, I mean they've been the second best team
all year. But you lose Steve Smith, he goes away,
what does that do? Brisbane lost a couple of guys too,
so that game was always going to be weird, ye,

(01:26):
and that Sydney Wickett wasn't great, really low scoring. In fact,
really the match winner was a bowler with the bat.
He's forty eight or thirty two, Michael Niis. So it
was a really strange clash. But at the end of
the day, the Brisbane heat there and they've been the
Scorches are the form team, that's for sure, but the
heat will last at like sort of the midpoint of
the season, so they have come home really strong, so

(01:49):
momentum is a little bit on their side. I think
this is a great matchup for the Scorches. And we
talked about last week about how winning that first final
against the Sixers was so big to get a home final,
but I think the one thing maybe I overlooked at
the time was the Scorches have had a week off,
so they've had time to rest, they've had time to train,
they've had time to you know, get some rest and

(02:10):
sleep and all that stuff. Britbane played last night. They'll
be on a plane the first thing today. Yeah, five
hours to Brisbane's.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
A long flock coming to a hot city, coming.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
To a really hot city, Yes, Paul, Britain. So they're
gonna they're going to be under the pump already. I
don't know if I know it's great for Perth. I
don't know if that's fair. If that were the other way,
I'd be thinking, Hey, that's the reward.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
How has the Scorches preparation been.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Yeah, really good.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Having been had the week to put their feet up.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, well that can also swum around. That's right. You
can get a little too comfortable. I didn't see them
out there and yesterday that he was, he was behind me.
I was running so fast a j couldn't even keep it.
They've been great. Matt kelly z the one who should

(03:00):
into the side for Lance Morris. Peter Hatzeglue, the fan favorite.
He's the other one. That is just how they want
to play it. They're very different players. The thing about
the Scorches is and we talk about how consistently great
they've been. And I saw that story yesterday about how
they might throw in a draft now because they're worried
about the evenness of the competition. This is the twelfth
Grand Final, this will be Perth's eighth Grand Final. The

(03:23):
Sixers have been in a heap as well. Those two
teams have completely dominated the competition in twelve years. And
Cricket Australia and the BBO they want ideally that have
had a different winner every year. That's what competitions want.
But you shouldn't penalize hard work and great.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Execution and professionalism.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
So they want to that's right, try to try to
be a little better, you know. And so they want
a draft potentially, which is like even for local talent,
because if you look at the Scorches lineup, it's a
couple of English imports, but for the most guys apart
from Hatzeglue are born in w r born and bred.
So you know what, just be better absolutely all worth yeah, yeah, correct.

Speaker 5 (04:02):
How we're coming to the end of a weird season
because one team made fifteen in one of the games.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
Really straining the season.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Yeah, but a great BBL season.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
I think big crowds.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
I think it's bounced back in a big way. Like
if you asked me twelve months ago, I thought the
BBL was on its last leaks, and now it's it's
well and truly fast.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Over a million a million spect that yes.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
Yeah, Now I saw you just checking your phone and
been quite a reaction to the ticket situation.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
I shocked. Okay, So thirty thirty four thousand went on
sale on Sunday, they went in four hours, and then
this week there was some scope for hospitality tickets to
be purchased, and today at ten am, the last tickets
will go on sale. Now I was expecting that number
to be about fifteen thousand, just doing maths, right, it's not.
It's only two thousand. There are only two thousand tickets

(04:44):
that are going to be available at ten am on
ticket Masters. So that's what our and forty eight minutes away.
You need to be ready because that's going to go
thirty four thousand win in four hours. Yeah, I mean,
I'm the mathematician, but I give that about five minutes.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
It won't take long.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
It's going to go quick. Take what you can, but
I had.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
To get on lane to buy Rolling Stones tickets.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
Yeah, right there, So you don't don't do the thing
we're like, oh, I'm not sure about those seats. Just
take whatever you can get.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Just get into the stadium.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
Yeah, there's there's no bad seats in Optics anyway, so
just get in there. So that would mean that we're
heading for I mean, the most you're gonna have for
cricket is high fifty four's close to fifty five because
of the Yeah, the side screens take off a bit
of space. So the record for a BBL game there
is fifty two to nine. So they're going to get that.
I mean it sounds like they've already sold that. So
two thousand tickets, be quick usman, Yeah great.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Name great.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
He's in trouble getting to India.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Yeah, he did, and this has happened to him before.
So obviously the Test starts on I think it's Thursday. Yeah,
that's right, twelve o'clock the first Test, so there's not long,
it's less than a week. The team all tried to
head over there. The rest of them were okay, but
because as he's born in Pakistan originally apparently when you
fly to India from anywhere. There's a on the form.
There's a little bit where it says are you born

(05:58):
in Pakistan? It's like one question and he asked obviously
answer yes, yes, and sounds like you get denied pretty quickly,
and so they just wouldn't let him in on that
first guy, which has happened to him before, and he's
voiced his frustration. My question is how many people are
in India? Like a hundred billion billion a lot most
of the people are there, right, I'm like, what's one

(06:20):
more guy? What are you rejecting this guy? Is it really?

Speaker 2 (06:23):
You know?

Speaker 3 (06:24):
And he's playing cricket. He's you know, I think you
know it was when K grudges a grudge.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Isn't it.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
How does the Pakistan cricket team get in don't.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
They don't? Yeah, so he's awkward, he's he's now there.
I think he's landed safely. But he had to go
through a little bit of a rig roll. So unfortunate.
But yeah, come on India, like you got a few
people that just let one Pakistani go and you just
want to play cricket, all right?

Speaker 1 (06:48):
All right? Well left lane they're doing chewyes, because they
captain locked in.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Yeah, Luke Schewey, Yeah, no, they actually we'll get to
that in a minute. They look great. Luke Schewey skipper
again fourth year and I think it's a right cool
Luke Shuey. Yes, he's had injury problems, although last year
he quietly played the last seventeen games without issue and
he's worked his butt off to get right. But from
a support and from a just a human side of things,

(07:13):
every player in that club goes to him for things.
He's him and his wife Danny. They're very supportive of
the young players.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
I more to be a captains to think this. When
people fussed over Mark Taylor being the captain of the
cricket team, it's like he's not the best player. It
doesn't matter, he's the best captain.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
In fact, you don't want your best player captain.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
No.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
Yeah. I remember when Nick Maxwell was captain of Collingwood
and he might have been their twentieth best player and yeah,
and I remember thinking it's a weird choice, but he
was a fantastic leader and that's what you need. And
she's a great player, but he is a really good leader.
So that was a unanimous choice. Apparently the vice captains
will be Tommy Barriss and Jeremy McGovern. So it was

(07:56):
Nick Nat and JK was involved as well in the leadership,
but Nick Nat has decided I'm just going to step back,
say fitting ready, same with Shannon Hearne. So Tommy Barriss
fair enough as Oscar Allan and Tom Barriss as the
future captains. I reckon Tom Barriss right now would be
slightly ahead. Obviously being the vice captain is a pretty
good sign of that. The one thing about West Coast
and Luke Shewey and his press of the other day

(08:17):
was pretty strong on this. They're pretty ticked off about
last year. They know they were unfit, they know they
weren't good enough. They know they had a lot of
work to do. Yeah, a lot of COVID they had.
They've got a new strength and conditioning guy, Mark Kilgallon.
They called him killer. He's an irishman, crazy iris. He's
got him working hard. They honestly, they look super fit.
I don't think i've seen in this fit. And Luke

(08:38):
said the other day it's the fittest they've been in
five years if you do the math, five years premiership year.
But they do look sharp, you know. Maybe it's just
the tan from summer, maybe it's you know, but they
look really fresh. Yeah, they look fresh. They couldn't look
worse than last year.

Speaker 5 (08:54):
They could not, although sometimes with the haircuts and the tans,
it's a bit of a commentator's nightmare.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
In the first couple, absolutely, Yeah, everyone looks the same different.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
Yeah, I still do with a team hairdresser.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
Other than that, what about Freo, what's happening there?

Speaker 3 (09:08):
Yeah, so they haven't locked in their captaincy yet. There's
obviously that five been captain for a very long time
and a very good leader. Alex Pierce is he's the
dark horse, right because you got Sarong embrace Shaw. Everyone
thinks one of those guys is going to take over
the captain sy at some point, bray Suaw being probably
the favorite. Don't write off Alex Pierce again in that
he's just a great leader, like he players love him.

(09:29):
He's been through some tough times with his body, He's
gotten through it and he leads from example.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
He's a wise man.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
Yeah, don't be surprised if he If it's not five,
which I still think it will be, But if it's
not don't be surprised if it's Alex Pierce rather than
the other two guys.

Speaker 5 (09:43):
People trying to work free, people trying to work out.
There was a clue in the team photos that were
taking because he was.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, which you can do that. You can
look into that stuff. You can look into that stuff.
They can also move those faces around.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
They can.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
They've done it before, really, that's right.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Yeah, well they just photo.

Speaker 3 (10:02):
It's pretty easy nowadays you can do that stuff. Yeah.
But Freo are looking good too. Okay, Yeah, they're just
doing it very quietly and a.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
Bit inconsistent at the moment. What about Howcats?

Speaker 3 (10:11):
Yeah, big weekend. So tonight at the Jungle versus Cans,
massive game six thirty tip off, and then Sunday against
the Kings. They if they win both, they playing finals. Right.
If they win one, they're relying on some other stuff.
If they lose both, I would say they're not going
to make it. So this is a huge weekend. We
sat here this time last year and they didn't make
it and it was a real disaster. Look, they've been

(10:32):
better this year, but there's no guarantees here. They need
to win tonight to start and then get the job
done on Sunday against the Kings, who are the best
team in the Comps. So there's a fair bit of
work to do. And I just want to quickly mention
Perth Heat as well. They're in a Grand Final series
this weekend. Great mate Steve Neilkovski has done some really
good things with the Heat getting them back in the
Claxton Shield. They take on Adelaide. That's out in Thornleigh
tonight seven o'clock, not far from my mum's house. Maybe

(10:54):
moreen will go down baseball.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
To get in. We're using cryptocurrency.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
That's right, it's very warm. It's fitting before you go
you mates with Bile. I made a little mistake this week.
Well I don't know why, but I've had Perth Scorches
versus Sixes in my head for three weeks because they
played the last what's been so long? So I tweeted
out something about the tickets going on sale and I
just said, you know, Saturday's final between the Perth Scorches

(11:22):
and the Sydney Sixes. Forgetting that the Heat Sixers game momentarily,
forgetting that they you know, it just left my mind.
And then coaching of the Heat he was held on
a minute. He is still a chance for this, you know,
want to mess with Boff is a big man. He's
a big man. I do love he's a good man.

(11:43):
We had some good interactions. I think I've ruined ruined him.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
No, hell, you'll be fine. He's lovable and he was laughing.
A good report.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
And of course then the heat one. Of course, of course,
don't you think the heat fans are letting me know
about it? Exactly, Ryan.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
We will talk to you after this massive weekend of
sport on Monday.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Yeah, sounds good.
