Ever wondered what inmates can and can't have behind bars? In this eye-opening episode, we dive into the bizarre case of convicted murderer Andre McKenny, who's taking legal action against his prison for denying him access to Vegemite. Sentenced to life with a 15-year non-parole period for a murder committed in Queensland in the 1990s, McKenny's lawsuit raises interesting questions about prisoner rights, rehabilitation, and what taxpayers should be funding.

You know how they say we're happy little vegemites as
bright as bride can be. Yeah, well, I'll tell you
it's not a happy little vegemite. It's convicted murderer Andre McKenny, mckne,
mckkennee whatever, Victoria. Andre has been sentenced to life in

(00:35):
prison non parole period fifteen years for a murder he
did in Queensland in the nineties. Now Andrea's in there
doing his thing, hopefully being rehabilitated as our criminal justice
system is meant to do. But he has decided that
he wants to take the jail, the prison to court
because they're not letting him have vegemite in prison.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Sucked in. Why do you deserve vegemite? You killed someone, mate,
You can have promite or marmite, any of the other
found anyone.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Apparently, vegamite is banned in prisons because it can interfere
with narcotic detection dogs. My favorite bit of this article
of this story is that in response to the lawsuit,
the Shadow Corrections Minister over there has said prisons about safety, discipline, rehabilitation.
It's not about acting as a hotel for inmates. And
he added that every time a prisoner ties up the

(01:31):
courts with a frivolous case, you know who's paying for
it us the taxpayer. Yeah, just because old mate Andre
wants some damn vegamin?

Speaker 2 (01:41):
I mean, what do they put on their toes? To
be fair, though, do they have little beer and berg containers?
You know those little gems.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
They don't have beer and berg.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Well, they'd have marmalade, wouldn't they vegamin?

Speaker 1 (01:50):
I would have thought it'd be a staple, but because
it clearly interferes with the dogs, they've got rid of.
They have peanut butter, although actually is it like going
to school? You can't have peanut butter because some of
the inmates might be allergic to it.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
They don't care drop like pies. I would give them
all peanuts. That's really funny.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Do you think that the prison correction officers packed little
bento boxes.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
On one of Lauren My best friend. Her cousin cooks
for the jails and used to cook for the big
jails in Darwin, and they get like really good food
these days.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
It's not the gruel that you see.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
It's not slop. It's not sloppy Joe's. It's full like
you get really nice stuff. You don't get maggots and
things like that.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
They get extra sloppy today. Yeah, that's nice that they
don't have to eat maggots. A lot of people are
in prison for minor things, not for being convicted murderers,
so maybe they deserve to have some food in some
sustance because they'll be out in a month or two.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Just a little bit of vegemie. I couldn't live without it,
I get it really.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Do you just have a little slither?

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Yeah, and a heap of butter and a butter Yes.
These guys are sneaking vegamite in. This is what they're
trading those little tiny hotels.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
