Speaker 1 (00:01):
And Amanda gam Nation.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
What a top song, What a great song.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
I was at a party recently that song came on.
People from every imaginable generation opened their mouths and sang along.
It is a great song. From the moment they released
their first album in the nineties, the world fell in
love would take that. Thirty years on, we're still feeling
the love as the boys bring their sold out tour
down under. Who better to get on to talk all
about that is Gary Barlow?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Look at you?

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Lovely to see it.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
I was so great to see you as a as
a more mature person, as a dad. How different is
how different is the role of when you're on tour?
Do you enjoy it more?

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Is it? Is it?

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Are you feeling all the senses more?

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Oh? We enjoy it much more nowadays, now we do.
I mean we talk of the nineties a lot. Actually,
the ninety stores was a complete blur. It happened quickly
and it wasn't a day where you could do a
post and the world would see. You had to travel
around the world. It felt like for six years our

(01:09):
feet didn't touch the ground. So we did enjoy it,
but not as much as we do now. We try
and slow time down a bit now and really enjoy
when we go to a city, really enjoy the city,
really enjoy the show. It matters because these things are
brilliant and we're lucky to be able to do them.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
And you do it when you're in your twenties. You
got your hit up your bum for a lot of it,
don't you. All of a sudden, when you get close
to fifty, you got I hang on a minute.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Yeah, Yeah, it's so true, isn't it. It's so true?
And also the one thing for me because I was
always the warrior in the band. I was the one
worrying about whether the guitar amp is going to get
unplugged or so. I spent my whole sort of first
part of my career worrying. Nowadays, it couldn't be more.
You know that my existence now in the band is

(01:57):
just slow down. It's going to be fine, everyone, It's
going to be great. Don't worry about anything.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
And what sort of response do you get these songs
that they're in people's DNA, now, aren't they?

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Do?

Speaker 1 (02:08):
People tell you about the role your music has played
in their lives.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
I love that. I love that because it starts with
the music for me. If you've not got the music,
you can't build anything around anything. So I've always found
that music for me has been the answer to a
lot of things. You know, in parts of life when
life's not so good. Music was the answer in times

(02:32):
of great things. Music's always the answer. It's kept me
anchored to who I am and what I do. So
the fact that people do come up to you and
tell them, tell you stories of how the songs change
their life or it was played at their wedding. As
a songwriter, connection is all wherever looking for. And if

(02:52):
audiences can connect with your music, it's it's really gorgeous.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
And we take that to Robbie's not coming, So it's
the three of you and yes, but you guys all
get on now. And that's been well documented. So you
performed as recently as twenty twenty with Robbie.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Yeah, but everything's peachy. Yeah, rab coms and goals in
our band. I mean he was. He did a record
with us in twenty eleven called Progress and toured with us.
But we've done i think four tours since then as
a three and so a three piece as take that
is sort of normal for us at the moment when
you look.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
At a band like I say, One Direction, Did you think, oh, okay,
we've we've been bought the T shirt on this one before.
Did you do you feel like jealous? Or do you
feel like excited? For the matter? What's the emotion when
you see a band like One Direction?

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Do you know what I wouldn't want to I look
around nowadays, it's so many young, talented people. I wouldn't
want to be starting my career now. I just wouldn't.
It's different now. I think if I think if you're
successful and recognizable nowadays, I think it's kind of unbearable.
I think because there's no escape. He there's no escape,

(04:02):
you know, in our in our day, if someone wanted
to take a picture, they actually have a camera with them. Nowadays,
we've got no pocket. There really is no escape, and
and that's no life. I don't think that isn't so anyway, Yeah,
I look, I look at them and say good luck, guys.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Because there was that moment where Paul mccartty was going
to someone's party. I forgot what it was, and the
banter wouldn't let him in, and he was quite satisfied
that he wouldn't. He wasn't recognized and they wouldn't let
him into that, and he was sort of like, well.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Good, this is a good thing that the universe finds.
It's you know, I'm still a human.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Yeah, yeah, that's the I think that's a big part.
Happy with that.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Do you have any idea who?

Speaker 1 (04:46):
I want to see the Wiggles and I want to
see them.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
Do you not know where I used to be?

Speaker 2 (04:51):
But you got three kids now, adult children?

Speaker 3 (04:54):
I know?

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Are they musical?

Speaker 3 (04:55):
No? None of them are musical. I think this saw
my life and thought, no, that's not for all. But no,
our sons at UNI, our daughters at UNI in sydney's
been living here for two years and she's got another
two years to go. And I've got to be honest,
I don't think we're going to get her back. She's
she's the Aussies have looked after. She's having a great time.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Oh that's great. Well, Actually, our prospective sons go to UNI.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
I think could be a chance they all hang in.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
I'm sure they will, right.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
And they look after.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
I'm sure. Guar.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
It's just great to talk to you. Tickets to take
that This Life to Ago on sale from Tuesday, the
third and of February on Frontier Touring dot com com.
And you will be back in October.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
Yes, look really looking. So we start our tour at
the end of March. We do UK Europe, we go
just after the summer into South Africa and the Middle
East and then Australia's are second to last group of shows.
Japan's the last one, but we go from here, so
we'll be looking to come in here in spring when

(05:55):
it's a summer bringing our speedos.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
I've got my I'm already man is going to be
down there with a box brown Gary, thank you for
joining us.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
He's been lovely to meet you. These microphones by the way.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Well, I've got a wood paneled one and his chrome.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Some people have said unkindly that this might look like
dog poo, but I'd like to see this wood paneling.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
Yeah, it looks vintage to me.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
