Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jersey and Amanda gem Nation.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Just talking to Rosso before about XPO eighty eight Brisbane
Xpo eighty eight. I think the theme was leisure in
the Age of Technology. I had just started at Beyond
two thousand. I think it was my first year. I
would have been twenty six, and all of us went
up to Brisbane. I remember we was part of it.
We went in and we had to fly down the
river to film something, you know, the Brisbane River, and

(00:24):
we were in a private jet.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
You fly the jet.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Well, I didn't fly the jet, but we all had
to because we all had to do something, all the
hosts of Beyond two thousand and I was so intimidated
to be there with Ian, who's lovely and his wife
Trisha was one of the producers, and there's Carmel and
you know, all the growth grownups and Simon and I
had only just started. We were the junior Burgers.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
And it was wearing matching jumpers out of magic. Probably
probably regretting those jumpers because it would have been warm.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
It was the most thrilling, thrilling for me, also terrifying
time during joining this new show. But Expo eighty eight
was everything and if there was a show that had
the word technology in it, beyond two thousand was going
to be there.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
It was the future. And there was a lot of
RGI bargie because at the time Joebiocchi Pedison was the
premiere of the Great State of Coinside and every other
state didn't want a part of XBO eighty eight.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Until it got closer. It was like the Olympics.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
But in the early days they had to they had
to sell it to the world, to the XBO eighty
eight ideas so people would invest in it. And we
were just on YouTube. That's the beauty of YouTube. We
came across this great promotional video of XPO eighty eight.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
World XBO eighty eight may start in Brisbane, but it
certainly doesn't end here, and we'll be doing our utmost
to ensure that you don't miss out on this international event.
The success of World XPO eighty eight depends on you.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Oh, no pressure.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
And then there's got pictures of people win.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Serving I guess bikini girls, bikitti girls.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
There's always a clown in there, a literal clown, a
lot of jobi occupedas and an actual clown and you know,
the obligatory shots of bikini girls, drinks with fruit in them
and all that sort of stuff.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
And you're in, You're in.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
And then the Open.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Australia, the opening of the you know this is the
thing we all embraced it did they say that this
put Brisbane on the map.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Bums on seats and at the opening there was none
other than Kerry Anne Kenneth course and Tim Webster was
hosting the opening on TV for the rest of the nation. Curiously,
they had daytime fireworks that.

Speaker 4 (02:37):
Is open d s.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Lou Edwards the day like must been up the ways,
awakes amazed at I'm thinking about of smoke at the moment,
I can't beget to read. There's an awful lot.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
That's when they let a bunch of balloons into the.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Sky like fire daylight fireworks.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
The place is getting straight.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
The footage looks like it's been bombed. Looks like who
would have daytime fireworks. There was also a bit where
Tim Webster said it's been an amazing build. I've I
was here that afternoon and people were still around a
still guy. Brisbane was awake in the afternoon.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
The afternoon back in those days. But it didn't put
it put it on the match you go. Yes, went
there and it was the first time I'd ever been
to Brisbane in eighty eight, and I thought, what a
great city this is. And I actually got to live
in Brisbane a few years later, and I really, I
really liked it. It's a great city. And that whole
area where they developed it at south Bank was pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
And now south Bank is just extra restaurants.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
It's great stuff.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
It's brilliant. But you know, everyone kept talking about the
New Zealand Pavilion.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yeah, yeah, everyone talked about the New Zealand Pavilion. Johnny Young,
Johnny Young, you know Johnny Young and Young talent time fame.
He was bagging on about it.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Everybody.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
Up to twelve million people will pass through this pavilion
in the next six months because we're at the Cowie
Caves where children of all sizes are looking over the
New Zealand Pavilion and no wonder because inside visitors will
be shown the mystical Mary Legends and they'll be taken
along a moving pathway past some absolutely amazing ice sculptures.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
Come on, kids, three you come.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
The New Zealand Pavilion is only one of seventy two
pavilions here, it's.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Called an escalator mate travel.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
You find it's a traveler.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Children of all sizes.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
I never went in there because the queue was too long.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Everyone was kept banging on about it. I asked Harley
about it, and he said.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
What was in there?

Speaker 2 (04:36):
He went in and a friend of his had designed it,
and he said he can't remember what was in He
said maybe some sheep. I said they went for a perth.
I think he said it was just a big celebration
of New Zealand.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
I said, what was the answer the questicle? People talk
about red Dog, but I was over in Western AUSTRAI
was he in there?

Speaker 4 (04:55):
No?

Speaker 3 (04:55):
They just said, I said what did red Dog do?
And they go red Dog? And yeah, But okay, think film.
Even in the film, the red Dog doesn't do anything.
It walks around and gets free lifts off.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
That's enough.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Ibe.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
They should make a film about the New Zealand pavilion
at expert what did it do? Would you like to
join us in a nostalgia here tales of Expo eighty.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Eight, specifically, I just want to know what was in
the New Zealand.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
If you can tell us what was in the pavilion
would be grateful. But you've got any other tales of
well you and Helen.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
Went we were in a harv acraft.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
But also you were is that you're sort of your
first outing as boyfriend girlfriend.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
It was a big deal because we traveled up in.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
The car together and stayed together and wanted to tell
your parents.

Speaker 3 (05:35):

Speaker 2 (05:38):
And what was going on there?

Speaker 3 (05:40):
Well, not much much, but we stayed at caravan parks
and went to Expo eight. If you could make it
than that across a craft that cost us twenty bucks,
like for the two of us to go this holocraft.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
