Speaker 1 (00:01):
I don't know. Okay, this is Julia Michaels.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Yeah, this artist is a superstar. You don't know her name.
She's two in Australia a lot. But also you might
not be across the fact that she has worked on
some of the hit songs for dou A Leper, Ed Sheeran,
Justin Bieber, Silene and Gomez Niall Horran. She's written music
that has gone number one of the Billboard charts for
other artists. She's also got amazing stuff of her own.
She's got new music out. She's just finished writing for

(00:30):
Sabrina Carpenter and dou Aleipa. The One and Only Julia
Michaels joins us back on the show. Hi, Julia, how
are you? Welcome back.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
I'm good, I'm good.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
How are you? I'm so good? Where are you? Looks
like you're the top of like a like a lighthouse.
So you you are like a sea shanty lady, now
out at sea? Where are you?

Speaker 1 (00:49):
I'm in my bathroom, actually my bathroom, vanity, Oh my, alright,
ten something pm.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
It's at night. Wait wait, do you have a laundroom
or an office? Why are you doing it in the bathroom?

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Julia it's the only place where there's actual lighting.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
My oh got it. Wait, so did you have to
clean up the bathroom? Like, do you have clothes on
the floor kick it to the side.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
No, I'm actually pretty clean.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
So all right, good, I love it. So it's late
at night. So wait, were you in your pajamas? Then
if you did, you have to get redressed to do
all this press and then you'll get back into pajamas
and go straight to bed after this interview.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Yes, yeah, okay.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Good because that's it's very human, and that's very me.
I do the same thing.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
I'm such a grandma. I got a bet at like
nine to thirty pm, and I get up and then
I've got, you know, my normal day of getting to
do what I love every day.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
But wait, what time do you get up though, because
n I'm thirties, very early.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
I went up like six am, get.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Out early bird. Do you do like mindfulness? Do you meditate?
You have tea coffee or no? Is that pipe dream?

Speaker 1 (02:00):
No? I basically just contemplate my existence and then I'm
like ready for my day.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
It's a very very human. Once again, that's what we
all do. I am loving the new era that we
are in Julia Michaels, And I mean I think the
little the bunt cut fringe and the dog hair and
the dark brows and the bright red lip. I'm like, I,
whatever these is, I am subscribing to.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Thank you so much. I'm having so much fun right now.
It's been It's been such a joy.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah, I can imagine. I mean, you've been touring all
over the US. When is this Has this been in
the works for a while, like this next era? Is this?
Have we hit go on the new area of new
air of Julie Michaels. Is this like it's beginning?

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Yeah, I mean I'm independent now, which is so exciting
because now I have full control over everything, full control
over my own narrative and how I want it to
look and how I want to sound and all of
those things. And Heaven two was the first song I
wrote outside of leaving my label, and I just felt

(03:08):
empowered and I felt excited to be able to feel
like I could write songs that weren't always tapping into,
you know, the sad part of myself or my vulnerability,
which you know, obviously is a big part of me,
but you know, just being able to feel like I
had the freedom to write about whatever I wanted was so,

(03:32):
you know, just special. So we wrote having two firsts,
and we've got more songs coming out, more music videos
coming out. My next song is gonna feature someone that
I just love, and yeah, I'm just gonna keep it going.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
How for you, how, how was it leaving the label?
I mean that would be so much of your personal
identity would have been tied up into being with a label,
especially as an artist, right, and you've had so much
success with your previous stuff. So was it a personal,
really hard personal decision for you to go out on
your own, because I can imagine the industry is still
kind of I know it's changing, but it is still
established to look after the big goddess with the big labels.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
It wasn't a hard decision. I had been at my
label for seven years, and I think everyone collectively knew
that it was time. I wanted to do things my
own way. And you know, luckily, there was no fight,

(04:33):
there was no hassle. You know, we were both very amicable,
and if things really went down, I have no shame
in saying that they did, but they didn't, and they
were just they were lovely and they let me go.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
It was nice when this drama and then there's a story,
you know, that something to let you into.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
I know truly, but you know, I remember texting the
head of my label and being like, I'm really happy
that I'll be able to see you in a room
and not pretend like I like you. I can actually
just go up to you and ask you how you're
doing and genuinely want to know how you're doing. And

(05:12):
he was like yeah, and he was like diddoh, you know,
so we really love things super amicable and I'm just
grateful that I get to do this now and get
to do it on my own and I don't have
anything holding me back or anybody or anything holding me back,
and I can just do it.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
My god, how empowering. You can just die your eyebrows
if you want, you can just die your head black.
And your buddy did and it looks hot. Hell yeah,
thank okay, heaven too. You touched on it. But uh ooh,
this is a gorgeous song. It's beautiful Julia, and then
the music video to go alongside it is It made
me feel so many things and I hate to bring

(05:50):
politics into it, but when you look at like the
next four years in Trump's America, and I know you're
in America, and everything that that Heaven Too stands for
kind of seems to go against everything Hay stands for.
Why now for Heaven Too, because it's got such a
strong message.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
You know, when yeah, when everything happened, We had filmed
the video prior, and I remember watching the video post
everything and being like, this feels so relevant right now,

(06:28):
just really being able to have a video that shows
love in every form and shows freedom in so many
different forms and empowerment in so many different forms. And
I was like, this is the world that I want
to live in. And I was really grateful to you know,
Blithe Thomas who directed the video, for collaborating with me

(06:54):
and bringing you know, both of these visions to life
and being able to have parade of incredible people. And
I was like, this is this is how it should be.
You should be able to parade around freely and love
who you want freely and do it how you want
to freely.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
This is what you captured the video right, I was
just getting it up. It says Heaven Heaven Too is
a parade of sex, joy and freedom from all walks
of life. It is being a woman stepping into her
own at the helm, a celebration of all types of
people to showcase what makes us different and unique. I
love it like that is not all artists would put
a put a song out like this, honestly, Julia like,
they really wouldn't. They'd be scared.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
I'm not scared.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
That's the takeaway. What does what does Schedulia michaels like, genuinely,
what is it?

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Chokes?

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Don't come to Australia, man, because they gotta get you.
That DIDs you. They're everywhere.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
I love a boat, but I will not go on
open water period.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
It's frightening. Oh my god. Did you ever watch that
movie open Water as a kid. That's scared the shit
out of me.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
But I did watch Jos as a kid and it
changed me forever.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
Yeah, I agree. Then watching it back as an adult,
I'm like, that's a puppet man. That's not a real
It's like claymation. It looks like Wallace and Grandma. I'm like,
this is embarrassing that I was scared of that just fake.
I know it's so bad. Well, I think it's gorgeous.
I think we Obviously, I want to talk about your
credits because you have written for so many incredible people. Obviously,

(08:25):
you know, people know at this point you did Taste
for Sabrina Carpenter, BEDCM for Sabrina Carpenter, and I've heard
you in a lot of interviews talk about that, and
you know, that's I think a credit to you being
able to write music that resonates with so many different
people over different genres. But hearing it like in the
studio and writing it and then hearing it on the
radio or hearing it you know, dart or live. Does
it shock you how different a song can be when

(08:47):
another artist gets their hands on a song that you've created.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
Well, I didn't write those songs by myself. I wrote
those songs with Sabrina, So I never had my voice
song songs or anything like that. I was with her
in the room, you know, just there for her when
she needed me. But it's always amazing to, you know,

(09:12):
hear something that we started in a living room or
a studio, you know, come to life on the radio
and see so many people around the world fall in
love with it and fall in love with her. I mean,
she's so special and such an incredible artist, and I'm
just so happy that people get to experience that.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
Right now, it's popping off, like, that's so cool that
you did it together. That would have been a fun night.
Oh my god, you guys in the studio, did you
do any bathroom? Is that what you do? Everything? Press?
And do you write your music in these bathroom vinity?

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Yeah? For sure.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
Yeah, the acoustics I can just imagine. Yeah, yeah, they're
on point. How was the inner monologue to did you
have the best time? I mean that was that was
your first ever like headline to her? For yourself?

Speaker 1 (09:59):
It was was my first headline tour actually, fun fact,
I've toured in Australia more times than I've toured anywhere.
I know, I know, I don't think a lot of
people know that, but yeah, Australia has been my most
toward place. I definitely miss it. I hope that I
can come back at some point soon, hopefully soon, But yeah,

(10:22):
that that tour was really special. And haven't toured since.
I wanted to wait until I had music that I
could tour. But then, you know, being on a label
and not being really able to release sud music, it
stops you from being able to tour a bit so

(10:46):
and now I can so, Oh my god.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
What I take from that is you will be back
in Australia very soon.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
That is that is a great takeaway.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Okay, this is you can't say it, but there's a week.
There's a major wink. It's like a comical wink. It's like, wait,
you don't that big peak cartoon, so wink. Hey have
you seen Wicked? I need your take? Have you seen it?
Do you love it?

Speaker 1 (11:08):
I haven't seen it yet, Julia, Why no, I know,
I'm so fine. I want to see it so bad though.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
It's like I love to see us so much.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
I love Ariana so much. They both have the best voices.
I want to see. It's so so bad.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
You gotta go, And what's holding you up? Go and
don't drink any water because you need.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
To pee holding me back?

Speaker 2 (11:33):
You you hustle? Yeah, well you know what you are,
A bloody superstar your dreams. You'll get everything you want
and more. And I can't wait to welk in your
back to Australia when you get down here. If you're
just tuning in, it's Julia Michaels a brand new single,
Heaven two is out now. Beautiful visuals too. If you
go to Julia's socials you'll get that all. But I'm
lovely to have you back here. That's great to chat
to you.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
Thank you so much, You too, fine
