Speaker 1 (00:00):
But another activity for probably more adults is going to
open homes and there's a very special one happening today. Cam.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Yeah, absolutely so JW Land. Of course we know sponsor
our show them. We love their partnership and everything that
they do. And they've got the Northbourne Village going. And
of course we've been talking about the Bachelor Flats over
the last couple of weeks.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Indeed now they're also known as the Legacy Units. These
are the iconic Northbourne Flats right near Dixon across the road.
For me, I remember standing next to them at the
bus stop because I went to line them high. Of course,
so I have a very vivid memory. But they've all
been done up and they look absolutely spectacular. And let's
get on the project marketing manager at JW lant to
talk all about it. Mister Nick Babbage, Good morning.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Good morning, Maddy. How's it going good?

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Good? Now, tell us exactly about these Bachelor Flats and
the history of the building.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
No problem. So the Bachelor Flats is a four story
heritage building positioned on North Point Avenue. In line them.
Within this building are seven so Okeley significant studio apartments.
When federal government departments started relocating from Melbourne to Canberra
in the fifties and sixties. Housing was in short supply

(01:11):
at the time, much like it is right now. On
the site where North Worne Village Precinct is emerging now,
a medium density development was constructed to house the influx
of public servants coming into the town at the time,
and one of those buildings in that original development was
called the Bachelor Flats and was first occupied in nineteen

(01:32):
sixty two by those public servants coming in at the time.
In the years to follow, the Bachelor Flats continued to
be used for public housing.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
Okay, mate, And so you've incorporated these Bachelor of Flats
into the Northbourne Village. Are people interested in the history?
Like even you just sort of going through that, it's like,
oh wow, that's a real piece of history for Canberra
that's now incorporated into something that's modern.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Definitely, there's been a lot of interesting in this bill.
We've spoken to a lot of people who have either
lived in the Bachelor Flats when they were younger or
know someone who did. It's interesting to learn about those stories.
Even like what Maddie pointed to earlier in the segment,
when we purchased Jda Billian, I should say purchase the

(02:19):
line of development site from the Aht government. One of
the requirements was that the Bachelor Flats be retained due
to their heritage nature and be completely refurbished. Jada Biland
is pretty proud of how the renovations have turned out,
and we look forward to seeing the next generation of
Camberan's and a little piece of history.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
If eeople want to come and see them and see
the features and how you've done them up, I'm presuming. Well,
I know today's the first open home. Tell us about that.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Yeah, So from ten im till twelve pm today the
Bachelor Flats will be open. The address is three p
fifty five North Point Avenue Line them. Parking is of
available on de Burgh Street. We'll have our lovely sales
team there to show people through them. There'll be free coffee,
pastries and live music for people to enjoy.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, and they're super modern on insight. Actually walked past,
made the point of walking past the whole development, and
I saw painters just putting the final touches on everything.
So you must be excited. It's ready to go, Nick.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
It is, It's ready to go. The studio apartments surprised
from three hundred and ninety nine thousand, so a great
entry level product for it could be like a perfect
start for a first time buy or even some investor
take on board and offer as a rental property.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
Yep, and you get to own a piece of Canberra history. Well,
thank you so much for joining us, Nick the project
