Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is something that I've always thought about. When you
drive past a job site and you see most houses
being built, they're wooden frames. But I drove one, I've
past one a couple of weeks ago, and it was
a steel frame.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
You do see them every now and then.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Yeah, so I thought, like, so, Wayne Goodwin license Build
at Goodwin Building Services has been on the show many
times and we always turn to him for building advice,
and he's with us right now. Good morning, way Note.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Good morning Cam, Good morning Maddie. Thanks Abe.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
All.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
So, Wayne, what are some advantages and maybe even the
differences and disadvantages between a wood frame and a steel
frame for a house?

Speaker 3 (00:41):
I think personally the price is probably drive most builders
towards the timber training construction methods opposed to your steel.
But steel has its place in the market with it
has a lot less resistance to turn what attack, and
higher structural strength. Kind of look two different products within

(01:02):
the market itself, but kimber, obviously in the more popular
material will use on a daily basis.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Yeah, absolutely, I mean, and timber would be almost the
more traditional frame as well. Is there one or the
other as far as builders enjoy working with?

Speaker 3 (01:22):
I think Timber is probably an easier product to work
with and a lot more adaptable, so you can use
a very structural part of the building process, whereas still
is probably a little bit limited as to how you're
introduced it into a certain areas. And for the renovation
potension market, which timber is the true when when you're

(01:45):
cutting new doors in frames or new openings, timber is
far easy to work with, and that's my preference of
choice is certainly timber.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
Yeah, I suppose you're right. If you're retro fitting house
or doing renovations, you know, cutting us you'll beam in
half would be much more difficult, I would imagine, certainly
it's a lot harder.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
But for either timber you're cutting a hole in the world,
making your door, it is far easy to you work
with timber in this steel. Steel is driven with more
your grinders and well being kind of materials, whereas your
home handyman is ready available with a hammer and a
nail and a where he goes. He can make it
your door himself without having the call upon a train

(02:28):
or a build up to some very similar simpler tasks.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Is there a time, though, that a steel frame would
be better, though a part like as opposed to a
wooden frame.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
So in a lot of your bush fire prone areas,
steel is a little bit more lidely used. It does
handle a fire attack a lot better than the timber.
Timber will, as you would know, it'd just burns to
the ground. Steel does does have some effect, but will
hold the structure in place and less likely to collapse.

(02:59):
So that and is also high term infestation area. So
you know, maybe up north in the territory you would
be more likely to steal a lot more steel brain
homes than opposed to timber.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Do you see in the future, You know we've got
obviously wood is kind of the traditional we're talking about steel.
Do you see in the future any different materials being
used for the frame? Cam and I were talking offa
a little bit about three D printing with concrete. Can
you see anything developing over the next few years.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Certainly as far as wall framing goes or construction of walls.
We do brick walls, something which was popular back in
the day, but that's kind of moved away due to
costs of labor and material. But you know, we're seeing
a lot more sort of recycled products coming into the market,

(03:45):
so lot finger joined in timber. There's more length of
timber joined together to make one length of timber. So
that's been around for a long time, but that certainly
is something which is far far more use the day
in the way that we can get the strength out
of a cycle product and implement it into our wall construction.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Wonderful mate, all right, well, as always, thank you so
much for joining us, thank you for your insights, and
you have a wonderful weekend, won't you.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Yeah, you got to have a good day.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Wayne Goodwin, license builder at Wayne Goodwin Building Services there
talking about the differences between using timber and steel and
then products in the future as well.
