The business part of this story is something that did
take front and center today because there is news on it,
and it's a debate. It's a it's a debatable thing.
And if you think the NFL is definitely not going
to resume the Bills Bengals game at some point, think again.
(00:45):
We did get the story from Commissioner Roger Goodell today
that the Bills and the Bengals is not going to
be played this week. Right, That will not happen. The
NFL continues to be in regular contact with the medical
team caring for Damar Hamlin, the Bills, the Bengals, the
NFL Player Associate Asian they are not going to play
the game this week. There is also no change to
this week's NFL schedule. So what does this mean, Well,
(01:09):
they obviously don't need to play the game, right, you
can figure it out. People will figure out their fantasy championships,
we can figure out seatings in the playoffs. We can
do that, and we don't need to play the game.
But but here's the thing, knowing the NFL, and then
this gets into a little bit of a of a
dicey area with this. But knowing the NFL and going
(01:31):
back with the business part of it, here's what I
can see now again, you don't need to play it.
You don't need to play the game. No, nobody needs
to play this game. Again, we don't need to We
can go on, we can play the games this weekend,
go to the we can do it. But here's the NFL,
and I'm gonna look at it from how I think
the NFL looks at this situation. Okay, what do we
do here. Let's kick the can down the road, Let's
(01:53):
see what happens. Let's see what happens, and hopefully Damar
Hamlin is okay and he pulls through and he's all right,
and hopefully this game isn't gonna wind up having a
bearing on playoff seatings. Hopefully it doesn't, but if it does,
if we're playing this week and something happens for the
playoffs and the Bills Bengals game is needed to decide
(02:16):
something that's needed to decide seating. They're gonna play this
game because the NFL. Look, look, this is still a
game that's out there, and I can see the NFL again,
this is what I'm thinking. I can see the NFL saying,
business wise, do we want to set a precedent that
we're just not gonna play games? Right, because look at
what happened during COVID when it was he COVID. Did
(02:38):
we miss a game? We did not miss one game.
We did not miss one game. We had a we
had a global pandemic, and we didn't miss one game. Right.
We played on Tuesday, Tuesday afternoons at noon. We played
on Wednesdays to play. We are playing these games. We
are not going to cancel games. The NFL is not
in that business. They don't want to set the precedent of, hey,
(03:00):
here's a scary injury and we're not going to play
the rest of this game. Now, this is something that
should be Hey, this was an easy decision, right, the
guys getting CPR in the field, We're not playing this game, right,
it's done. Yes, they're scary situations. The NFL has seen it.
We saw a player die on the field in the
early seventies, and the NFL is still finding a way
to go on. It's a dangerous game, and I understand this.
(03:22):
But the NFL, you can see from their past how
they acted during COVID. If we're gonna play this game, Hey,
Broncos have no quarterbacks. Sorry, you gotta play the game.
But we don't have a quarterback. Sorry, I gotta play
the game. So Kendall hitting good luck going out there
trying to throw the football and win a football game
when you're not really a quarterback. This is how the
NFL is, and I can see them thinking that if
(03:46):
we don't play this game, we opened the door to
other times where a game can be abandoned, and we're
not gonna We're not gonna do that. So we're going
to look at this and see if we have to,
we will play. No, this is not going to be
the NFL saying we're playing this game no matter what.
This is not. This is not going to be that
because that's something that not even the NFL could come
(04:06):
back from from a public relations standpoint. It would be
too it would be too awful for them. But if
this game is needed for for that, I can see
them saying, after this week, we're gonna play the Bengalsh
Bills game. Then we're gonna start the playoffs the week after,
and we're not gonna have a week off between super
you know, I I can that. That's how I'm looking
because if you think they're not gonna play the game,
(04:27):
just think about how the NFL is progressed when when
during a global pandemic and we don't know what's going on,
we're gonna play all these games. Yeah, if this game
is needed, they will play it. If it's not, if
it's not needed, and it's okay, you know what, Yeah,
okay this game. Because of these circumstances, we can we
can abandon, we can go on and move it. But
if they have to, if there's a way to do it,
(04:48):
they will play the game because that's what the NFL does. Yeah.
I would anticipate just to that level. Right. I don't
think this is a hey, here's a coin flip situation
like you have had in high school football and day op,
you're the odd team out. Sorry you lose. No, that's
not getting They're not gonna determine seeding that way. Uh.
And let's face it, if the game is needed, what
(05:11):
better for the drama, pageantry, pump and circumstance of the
NFL too. Hey on, one game decides the number one
overall seed in this conference with these two teams that
have battled all years. So yeah, it's it's certainly in play. Yes,
the Mannings will lose some luster on the Pro Bowl
(05:32):
games or whatever the hell it is they're trying to
do this year. I haven't paid bunch attention. I just
know they announced them because they're gonna jam the Mannings
into every piece of programming possible at this point. But yeah,
it's it's there's no reason to make that decision today, right.
The only decision that needed to be made in a
(05:52):
timely matter was the medical assistance and then deciding to
postpone the game after that, there's no urgency. You've got
a slated games this week, and it may all be
a moot point. I know there's been a lot of
anger on the NFC side as far as what got
flex to whatever else again, it'll it's it'll all work out.
It'll it'll be fine, uh for Roger Goodell and company
(06:15):
trying to figure out that the best way to go
and yes, with with the other teams in the a
f C playoffs, get some level of advantage. Would be
some argument, folks would make, like its exigent circumstances. As
you said during COVID Tuesday's we were coming on Wednesday evening,
breaking down Wednesday afternoon NFL games. All right, here's the
(06:37):
Baltimore Ravens in the playoff hunt playing on a Wednesday.
Natural disasters, weather events, all sorts of circumstances have have
You've moved games, you know, to other facilities to help
continue the machine moving on. So I don't I don't
believe for a minute, if the opportunity is there to
(06:59):
play it that they they'll move it on and just
say no, no, no, we we give up a game.
Because we talk about precedent a lot when it comes
to sports and society in general, and from a decision
making process. Because I remember is as ghoulish as it
may seem, and I know that there's a lot of
folks always ready at the keyboard or at the microphone
(07:21):
to get angry, and it is the larger business they're
also trying to be sensitive to, right, corporate partners and
advertising sales or whatever. There's there's a lot that that
flows from it. As much as in the immediacy of things,
uh it it may seem distasteful and off putting, it
is a reality that the league has to adjust with
(07:43):
as well. So you need to be cognizant of that.
First and foremost the players, coaching stats, and those teams affected. Um.
But beyond that, yeah, there there still is the larger
mechanism to work through. I mean, look, look, if if
you just to give another layer to this of how
the NFL is, you know, constill the fact that they
(08:03):
haven't they haven't canceled it already tells me it's on
the table. Well why haven't you canceled it? Right? Unless
it's on the table, you don't need to. We may
need to play the game. And like I said, there's
reasons around it. There's hey, and mainly is we don't
want to get in the precedent of canceling games. But
just think about this, if you think real NFL really
gonna do it, what was one of the big controversies today, right,
(08:24):
the fact that ESPN reported last night after the injury
to Damar Hamlet and he got any and he was
getting CPR on the field, they were told that the
game's gonna resume in five minutes. Right, we're gonna They
had spended the game while I was going on. They
gave both teams time and Joe Buck was on TV.
He said it four times the game we were we
were told the game's gonna resume in five minutes, and
(08:46):
a couple of times even said is that right? Is
that where where it's resuming in five minutes? And Troy Vincent,
head of the NFL p A, last night, did an
interview and said, no, we never said anything like that.
Basically that Joe Buck was making that up, was making
up the fact that you know, we're gonna start again
in five minutes. Um, Joe Burrow was warming up on
the field. You saw some players that were milling around.
(09:07):
We're gonna get to start playing this game. Um yeah,
I'm not gonna believe that. There was no directive to
start the game again. Now it was hectic. I'm sure
what's going to happen. We're gonna play again, we're gonna
go in five minutes. I'm sure that was the NFL
getting their decision out to we're gonna play this game,
(09:29):
and then it was met with whatever reaction it was,
and the bill said we're not playing, and they just
moved on, because there's no way ESPN is gonna go
on the air and say, yeah, the game's gonna start
in five minutes unless they were told by the NFL,
unless the people they were and Joe Buck even said,
we got it from this person who was talking to
(09:51):
the NFL. Right, this is what's going on. ESPN is
not gonna go on and just say something that reckless.
We were told the game is gonna start again in
five minutes unless they were told about it. Look that
you can say, you can say many things you want
to about ESPN, but they're they're not doing that unless
they were told. So that comes out and Joe again,
Joe Bucks said it like four times, we're gonna play.
(10:12):
That's right, we're new we're playing again, and it sounds insane.
He's got no reason to lie about it. Joe Buck's
not gonna make it up. Well, I think we're gonna
start again in five minutes. Well, Joe, I don't know
about that. No, you stop over there. I'm gonna say
what I want to say. The ESPN responded to Vincent today,
Yeah right quote. Constant communication in real time between ESPN
and league and game officials. As a result of that,
(10:34):
we reported what we were told in the moment and
immediately updated fans a new information was learned. This was
an unprecedented, rapidly evolving circumstance. All night long, we refrained
from speculation. End quote. It was it's the NFL because
we've seen this before, right and and just to let
(10:55):
you know how a decision like this has made just
think about this for a second. In the NFL, we
have seen tremendously scary injuries. It's going on. You're seeing
him worked on on the field, and it's a scene
that none of us have even even seeing scary stuff
with guys going down on kickoffs and getting injured and
not moving. This was above being scary. But what's the
(11:17):
s op for the game? They take a few minutes
and we play again. And I'm sure because that's the
way it was. Standard operating procedure was when this happens,
we take a break. Everybody takes a couple of minutes,
we get back on the field, we play the game. Yes,
we're gonna play the game. And that decision is made
in a vacuum by whoever is making it, not understanding
look at all the ramifications that are going on surrounding us.
(11:38):
We just watched a guy who who who We don't
know if he's alive right now, and and we just
watched you get taken off the field and you're telling
we got to get back on the field and play.
So this is a decision that it looks to me, hey,
we're trying to back away from this now. The NFL knows,
hey there, we are not gonna look good if this
gets out there that we're the ones that said, hey, yeah,
we're gonna play this game in five minutes. So what
(11:59):
I what what I would say happen knowing from my
life and TV and and stressful situations in in a
booth And look, Frostburg, I know you could talk about
it too. You know you're in the booth every week
for Chargers games. You know the way information flow goes.
Someone makes that decision at some point, Now do they
do they make it um fully understanding the consequences of
(12:21):
everything going around. No, maybe then that's why, maybe this
is a case where it was, Hey, this is normally
what we do. We're gonna play the game in five minutes. Okay,
we're playing in five minutes. And Joe Buck is having
to tell people that people, are we gonna play this game?
Are we not? All the questions on social media? Are
we playing this game? We don't need to play. That's
how it happens. And it happens, and it happens like that,
(12:41):
and and and and knowing that this was gonna be
the backlash, yeah, I I don't doubt that anybody wants
to back away from any responsibility of this. No. No,
we we never said. We never said, we never said.
But honestly, I'll tell you that I ESPN is not
lying about it. ESPN is not making up that they
were told by the league that we're gonna start at
by someone in the in the NFL that was in
(13:03):
charge of the game. There was a charge of this
that they were going to start the game in five minutes.
There's just no way. Well, you're going into journalistic and
integrity and credibility. Uh, you are a league partner, so
we we know oftentimes there's there's that line you have
to tow. So for the ESPN to put out that
statement and adamantly refute Vincent's comments from that conference call
(13:24):
last night, it's a pretty big deal, right, because that
that has been as you say, standard operating procedure. UH,
the rules analyst John Harry had his UH was the
guy that they were getting information from. And because of
the exigent circumstances. Okay, maybe maybe they change what what
(13:47):
has historically been protocol, but that certainly wasn't communicated through
whatever channels, right, there was somewhere on here. I don't say,
uh blanket that someone's lying, but but clearly both sides
are entrenched in what they feel here. Again, it goes
(14:09):
back to the coaches and the leaders and captains of
these squads that looked around the sideline and and I
think forced the issue. We'll we'll see eventually they'll be
the books written in and larger background of the sequence
of events. But in this moment, you know, you had
the leaders on the sidelines that that took it into
(14:31):
their hands. So five ten, whatever that timeline was, um,
they rendered it. Moot. Be sure to catch live editions
of the Jason Smith Show with Mike harmon weekdays at
ten pm Eastern, seven pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
and the I Heart Radio app. Just a few days
after losing in the College football Semifinal, Jim Harbaugh has
(14:54):
talked with the Panthers about their head coaching job. Owner
David Tepper had a conversation with Ball about the opening
uh once the two season ends. Now, this is a
job that Steve Wilkes has right now. He's considered a
strong candidate to keep the job. Kept the team afloat.
We didn't think they would be even close to where
they were a week ago, and hey, we could potentially
(15:15):
you win the NFC South. All right, they didn't. They
blew a big lead. But still Wilkes has done a
good job. What does this mean? I get that if
you are Michigan, you're mad because you just signed him
to a contract extension last year. You gave him a
lot of money. But I'll tell you how this is
all gonna end with Harbor in Michigan. Right. What's going on?
You get? Last year he had the flirtation with the
NFL after beating Ohio State going to the CFP. Same
(15:38):
thing here he beats Ohio State. He goes to cfp's
talking the NFL again. This is how it's gonna end.
Every year Jim Harbaugh succeeds, he's gonna do this to
get things added to his deal at Michigan, whether it's
more of an extension, more money, something, He's going to
do this because this is when you do it. Oh,
we beat Ohio State again. We we put fifty on
(16:01):
him on the road and we made to the semifinal.
Yes we lost, but this is a great year. One
another big ten, too big tents in the road to Yeah,
I want more. This is when you push, because when
you have succeeded, this is when you can get what
you want from the school. Maybe it's more money, maybe
it's facility, whatever it is. He's going to do this
every year, and when he doesn't or slash, he gets
(16:23):
the right NFL opportunity, he will take it because you
know he's still mad about how it ended in San Francisco.
Couldn't get along. He gets the super Bowl, he's pushed out.
He goes to Michigan. This was the gig for him.
That's how it's gonna end for Hardball as long as
he's winning. This is what's gonna happen at the end
of every year. Hey, I'll talk to the NFL. I'm
a Michigan guy, but you know, you never say no,
(16:44):
this isn't the job for him. No, Caroline is not
the gig. But if a big gig comes up and
Michigan is gonna balk and giving him a little bit more,
then guess what, then he's gonna go to the NFL
because no matter what he's done, what he's wanted to do,
and what they asked him do it Michigan get the
program back to being a national powerhouse. When Big Ten's
beat Ohio State, beat Michigan state, check check check, he's
(17:06):
done all of those things right. Hopefully he keeps it going.
But if not, he's done this. He's got to the
top of the mountain. Michigan has done what they've asked
him to do. So he's gonna keep asking for more.
And if the combination of hey, you're not gonna give
me more and the right opportunity comes up, then he
goes back to the NFL. Yeah, it's comical how the
accomplishments of the last couple of years and and what
(17:27):
his record and success at Michigan has been overall, it
gets categorically dismissed by so many people. Um lazy takes,
but it is what it is. Uh. You know, remember
who you are? Right? The old Simba line that Mufasa
gives him in the fun and exciting world of the
Lion King. Yeah, I just went there. Uh. And that's
what Michigan football needed to do. Remember after the COVID
(17:50):
season when they went two and four, uh, and they
reduced his his deal quote, I reacted, no big deal,
attacking each day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind as
always didn't really mean anything to me. It's just money,
big deal. I was like, no, Is, it's still pride
blanking with you. But to your point, Yeah, Denver and Carolina,
those those are not the jobs man. Obviously, the Walton's
(18:12):
can could give him all all sorts of cash and
and power. Do you you want to go try to
fix rus? Maybe? Maybe not? Uh Carolina, even Temper, who's
an aggressive coach. I like the job Wilkes has done.
I'd like to see him get a shot, but I'd
understand if they start looking at Harbaugh thinking that he's
the guy to extend that bit of a turnaround for
(18:34):
But yeah, you're gonna use the leverage every chance you get.
He'd be an idiot if he didn't, and if his
people weren't leaking all over the place. Hey, you know
who called me today? But yeah, but the Caroline. He's
not gonna leave Michigan for Carolina. This was to let
everybody know, Hey, guess what, guys, I'm still open to
the NFL. I'm play if the right gig. You want
(18:57):
to call me. I know you like Sean Payton, but
he's only one guy. You know. I'm I'm another guy.
I I could, I could take this gig. And if
he gets the high profile gig he wants, that's what
it'll go. But it's got to be that combo of
Michigan's not taking care of him and the right opportunity.
If that happens, he'll go. Why are the Bears keep
texting me? Be sure to catch live editions of The

Big goings on in the NBA tonight, And you know
this is why you know? Because for what have I
(20:02):
said the last three weeks about the NBA and how
great the Pelicans are playing. I'm mad I didn't have
the sack to pick them to go to the Western
Conference Finals. Now, I was more than happy Grizzlies Nuggets,
right my previous I'm happy where they are right now, Right,
Grizzlies and Nuggets. Hey, it's awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, Right,
but boy, the way the Pelicans were playing as great
(20:23):
as Zion was playing. They lost Brandon Ingram, who hasn't
played the month. Doesn't matter. They're still winning games. Hey,
the Pelicans, they've gone from Hey, they could be a
dangerous team to Uh, the Pelicans might be the best
team in the Western Conference, right, they went that far.
But what was the reason? I always said why I
couldn't pick the Pelicans more Because I just don't know
(20:44):
how long Zion Williamson is going to play because his
health is always an issue. When we find out today
he's going to miss the next three plus weeks with
a hamstring strain. He got hurt in the game last
night and he's going to be reevaluate aided in three weeks.
So to think, okay, he's out three weeks, No, he'll
be reevaluating through. And you've seen Zion Williamson isn't the
(21:07):
fastest healer in the world. This is a guy that's
been out for a while. I just don't know that
his body can withstand the pounding of an eighty two
plus game NBA season, Right, you don't know how long?
For as long as he's going to play because because
look that's the whole thing I've said, whatever, however long
he plays, man, he's Shaquille O'Neal. He is it. He
is great. But you never know when that game is
(21:30):
going to be the last game he plays for a while. Right,
It's it's It's like when I would watch Jacob deGrom pitch.
Now you have to worry about that anymore. That's range
your fans issues or Dodger fans watching Clayton Kershaw pitches. Boy,
we're watching absolute artistry. But he's okay. Right after the
game is over, everything is fine. You didn't come out
with an injuries. Fine, you know, you hold your breath
(21:52):
every time these guys pitch because they're they're just you know,
they're just fragilely that their health has always been an issue.
And it's the same thing with Zion Williamson and with
the physical pounding of the NBA. He's been hurt every
year of his basketball life, from his senior year in
high school to where we are now. You're talking about
senior year, his first year at Duke, three years in
the NBA. So yeah, he's got a big time problem
(22:16):
that he can't stay healthy. And this is the thing
is that when he plays, he's great, but you don't
know when he's going to be healthy, how long he's
going to be healthy for this. Hopefully it's a three
week thing and he's back soon because the NBA is
so much better when he's playing because his skill set
is just off the charts, and he does things. I mean,
it's like watching Shaquille O'Neil the first time around. But
(22:39):
I don't know that the if if you asked me, hey,
what what do you think your best hope is for
Zion Williamson and winning championships and winning at all is
I would say at this point because it's been too
much of his career to think that suddenly he's going
to be healthy. Right, Like, he's a big kid. He
came to the league. He was the second biggest guy
in the league when he walked in. He's just gonna
(22:59):
get bigger as time goes on. And already with his
big frame, he's having trouble staying in the lineup. The
soft tissue injuries, uh, you know are things that that
he's going to struggle with and you're not gonna get healthier.
You know. It's one thing to have an injury bug,
you know, the first year or two in in in
the NBA or when you make it too into professional sports,
then you get healthy. But again, remember this is a
(23:19):
guy that was hurt every year from senior year of
high school up until now. You're talking about five years
in a row. I would say the best case in
or what I would hope for, where you can hope
for if you're a Pelicans fan or a Zion fan,
is that maybe one year, the stars will align and
he'll be healthy what he needs to be, which is
the right time in the regular season and all the
way through the playoffs, and he can win a championship.
(23:41):
I mean, that's just that's just being real, right, that's
just being real. And what I could what I could
hope for for him is that at some point it'll
all come together for him one year, because to think
that it's always gonna happen where he's going to I
think we've seen that that's too difficult for him. And
and maybe it's about minutes restrictions. Maybe it's you're getting
your adding time off. Now. I don't care if you
(24:01):
like it or not. You're not gonna play in any
back to backs, and if you're playing three games in
five days, you're gonna take one of those games off.
I mean, you want the guy to be able to
stay in the line up as much as possible, and
you're gonna have to start doing things like this more
regularly just to hope to keep him around. But in
the end, you can't stop the guy from The guy's
got to get out there and play. So what's realistic
(24:22):
what you can hope for that one year with the
Pelicans in the next few years while he's got this
big contract. They can go through and he can be
healthy when he needs to be, and you get to
see him all the way through in the playoffs and
all the way through in the in the heat of
June when when we're talking NBA Finals and we're talking
about design like we talked about Lebron James, you know,
for the past fifteen years. That that's what I think
(24:42):
is the realistic hope. One maybe it's this year. Maybe
he comes back and this was his injury and he
gets back and plays all the way through, But I
can't count on that because I've seen what's happened to
him over the last few years. Yeah, the hard part
is what highlight reel he is. Obviously, there's all sorts
of stories about Zion the guy, But twenty six seven
and four point six per game, averaging six from the field.
(25:05):
I'll get back to that momentarily. I mean, he had
twenty six and twenty eight minutes in that game against Philadelphia.
They played him on the thirtieth last Friday. Then they
had that game, the showdown against Memphis that they got
beat down in. Uh. He went for twenty and nine
and twenty eight minutes there, and then he gets hurt
uh in in the game against the Sixers yesterday. And
(25:27):
now we we get three weeks. Alright, he's played in
twenty nine of thirty seven games. Now he lost a
couple to protocols, right, he goes into the league's protocols
for for health and wellness. Fine, he lost a couple
of games lower back and hip. Okay, a couple of
games for a foot contusion. Stepped on UH and stepped
(25:48):
over repeatedly. And that's gonna happen. Why because he lives
in the lane right and that and that's part of
the process that you have to go through. The guy's
of pogo stick. When things are working well, right, quick
second jump UH to be active on the boards that
are in and around the basket. And it's so much
fun to watch. But he's already in the Anthony Davis, Hey,
(26:09):
when healthy quality UH. In terms of star players, we
love when they're available for us to watch them perform.
The problem is you have no idea and for for
the Pelicans right now, the money is committed and it's
the you don't want to say load management, because when
you do that with him, it becomes well twofold, right,
(26:30):
depends on which impression, uh and which interpretation you want
to have there. Is it about his size and just
maintaining weight uh during an activity? Right, Because that's one
of the concerns that you have now is if you've
got three weeks where you gotta stay off your feet
before you reevaluate it, well, what happens You're in New
Orleans for crying out loud, I mean, bad things can happen. Man.
(26:51):
I'm thinking about beignets, and I just put on four
pounds right now, so exactly I can do some of
that chickory coffee though, So I gotta I gotta figure
out how to hook that up tomorrow. You just trickery coffee,
I said, chick chickory. Oh like chickery trickery coffee. Oh,
this isn't coffee. This is lie. Got you tricked? You're
(27:14):
drinking lie. You're I'm looking it up. Is a coffee
Trickery is a coffee shop in the Philippines. Let's Go.
