It's a long day for you, buddy.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
Loving life. I've been up since four am Pacific. You know,
we're almost rounding the clock here. I'm fine with it.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Though I'm pretty close, I'm not quite. It was about
a five point fifteen wake up call for me. So
we're rallying. And it's a beautiful thing because you know,
that means I've had a lot of coffee. It means
it's coursing through the veins.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
Nly caffeinated radio show right now.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
I still keep going through. And I tapped the microphone, going,
how do we not have a coffee sponsor?
Speaker 1 (01:38):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Or a taco sponsor.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Oh, we need tacos and coffee.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Yes, we're a beverage sponsor, all of these things. We
are your late night show for gluttony here on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
And you have a flamethrower. I mean it takes it
to a whole other level.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
It's the only way to put the perfect seer on
any of the meats or frankly, veggies for the vegans
vegetarians out there. I've done that too. You want to
put the final seer at the final char on that
you know that asparagus or zucchini or even carrot that
you're you're looking at. Nash on I'm telling you, kissed
(02:19):
by the flames of a fifteen hundred degree flame thrower, vegetables,
they'll never taste the same to you again.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
There you go, nicely done. Now, the Texas Rangers were
looking to take the flamethrower for the third straight time
to the Houston Astros, and he said not so fast.
Joining us now on the hotline, John Paul Morosi, our
body from MLB Network does some NHL work. He has
become a Lions expert. We'll have to get his pick
for the game this week. He is a Michigander and
(02:48):
he's there live in Foenix. At John Morosi, leave out
the h because mom said so. At John Morossi on
Twitter JP. They battled back for one night. Get the
best of Surezer. How are feeling.
Speaker 5 (02:59):
Today, Well, good evening, gentlemen. I would say this that
the right now, the Houston Astros have the Texas Rangers
right where they want them, which there you go, not
in Houston. It's a good situation for the Astros to
win ball games on the road. And listen, the Astros
have done this so many times, whether it was falling
(03:20):
down three nothing against Tampa three years ago, than coming
all the way back to force a Game seven. Of course,
the twenty nineteen World Series, when every game was won
by the road team. Nothing surprises the Astros in the postseason,
and we saw them come out early on. They had
a great game plan against Max Scherzer. Schurezer is still
not quite himself right now, it seems like to me
(03:43):
at least and Christian Javier as we saw it again tonight,
Javier in a big game, especially in October. My goodness,
he was locked in tonight AL two Ben other Homer.
So we've got a very interesting ALCS ahead.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah it was only four for twenty six coming in
the game against sure's your lifetime Ridge, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
Yeah, yeah. I mean, and look, I'm just glad that
we don't have a sweep on our hands here. I'm
glad to see a little fire and a little vim
and vigor from the Astros because I mean, we could
end up seeing that on the NLCS side. I hope not.
I mean, the Phillies look red hot right now. But
what do you see how this Diamondbacks crew and I
(04:25):
know that you were live for this game. We'll get
back to this game that was just played tonight in
this series that you were observing tonight. But my focus
is on the Diamondbacks because it's an upstart, ragtag group
of rebuilders that all of a sudden find themselves in
the Championship Series. What do you make of the d bac.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
JP he's hate watching from San Diego. Don't let him
pool you.
Speaker 5 (04:45):
Okay, all right, Well, it's so very interestingly rich. I
would say this that there are more than there's more
than one path to get to the NLCS, and you
don't have to spend lavishly on superstars and then give
them all extensions and hope that it all fuses together
in the cohesive group. Because the Padres that worked out
(05:05):
pretty well for them last year, not so much this year,
Whereas the d Backs are very much a homegrown group
supplemented with some key guys and really impactful trades. I
look at the move they made to bring in Lord
of Scuriel Junior and Gabrielle Moreno from Toronto in exchange
for Dalton varshow that deal has paid immediate dividends. Zach
(05:27):
Gallen was a very very wise trade acquisition. Merril Kelly
was signed here after he pitched in Korea for four years,
so they've brought in players through many different ways. They're
superstar as a homegrown player in Corbyn Carroll, they've already
signed to a long term deal, a magnificent player who's
led the National League in triples and twenty five hovers
(05:49):
and fifty plus stolen bases. But to me, guys, what
they've got to do is find a way to get
back to running the bases that aggressively. The d Backs
did not even attack to stolen base in the first
two games of the series. Admittedly they had very few
opportunities to do so. They're on base percentage was below
two hundred. Corbyin Carroll was on base three times, but
(06:11):
they've only had two extra base hits in the entire
series so far. So they really have to get things going.
I think they're very excited to be out of Philadelphia
and that racus atmosphere. They're very excited at not haveten.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
I think we just I think they just took him down.
That's it. He was trying to talk about getting him
back into the series, and just like that, look what
you did.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Rich The power and the strength of Philadelphia Phillies fansy
they banned together as soon as he started speaking ill
of that storied franchise. I mean they took him out.
We're worried about heat.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Tickets as low as fourteen bucks for this one, so
an opportunity to get to the ball. Yeah, no, yeah,
tickets are as low as teen dollars.
Speaker 5 (07:02):
I do not want to hear that. I'll tell you what.
I'm down downtown Phoenix right now. There's a lot of positivity,
at least around my immediate environment. I'm seeing plenty of
d Backs signs and shirts around, so I think that
people will show up tomorrow. But I am a little
a little troubled by the fourteen dollars. I would say
this though. It is, of course a week day, on
(07:23):
a school day, middle of the day. It's going to
be an earlier game here, so I understand all those reasons.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
It's a tough one because we've talked about it philosophically,
and me, I'm always for recognizing the business of everything. JP.
Just we get to a league championship series and seeing
that start time, just I get a little uneasy. Am
I wrong?
Speaker 5 (07:46):
Here's the thing, though, and I can kind of go
both ways on this topic, because I understand what you're
saying about wanting to have a full ballpark. But one
of the things I've always heard as long as I've
covered baseball in the playoffs has been these games start
too late.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
What about the get about the.
Speaker 5 (08:05):
Kids who want to watch the games? And so now
there are certainly in Philadelphia. My goodness, this is the
best news in everybody's third grade classroom. The game starts
at five o'clock Eastern time. You get home, you get
a little early dinner, enjoy your mac and cheese, and
watch watch the Phillies with your parents. I mean, that's
that's awesome. So that they're good in Philly. And then
(08:26):
the d Backs fans here here in Arizona school because
out of two thirty you missed the first inning or two.
Hope that there's not a Schwerber home run or a
Harper home run that you missed there, and then get
home and cheer on your team. I'm all about this
is this is kids Day at the NLCS.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Look at you.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
Yeah, yeah, it is for the kids, you know. Hey,
speaking of the kids, A bunch of kids, homegrown talent
running around that Arizona Diamondbacks roster. Yeah, okay, would it
surprise you? Are there any surprises left? In this postseason.
What did surprise you if the Diamondbacks won a World
(09:03):
Series or is it possible to see a route?
Speaker 5 (09:07):
Well, I'll say this rich it would based on the
way the first two games went, it would be a
surprise to see the Phillies lose this series. You'd have
to say that it'd be a surprise. It can certainly happen.
And believe me, I've covered enough playoff series in enough
playoff games that just when you think a series is
going one way, to think again, because here comes momentum
(09:29):
in the other direction, and it can happen very quickly.
I've covered playoff series where the road team, I think
it was the road team won every single game. This
was a division series back in twenty ten covered the
I didn't cover the World Series in nineteen, but obviously
I watch it along with everybody else where. The road game,
road team won every game. So you can see things
(09:50):
that surprise you and series that turn on a dime.
I was the guy who famously declared to remarkably she
decided to marry me, but to my girlfriend now wife,
when she was wondering when I was gonna be able
to actually hang out with her in Boston after Game
three of the ALCS in two thousand and four, I said, Ah,
don't worry about it. The Yankees will sleep them tomorrow.
(10:12):
I said that, I really did, and we got married anyway.
Speaker 3 (10:15):
So Insa, I mean your prognosticating abilities there, I'm gonna
be just in that week.
Speaker 5 (10:21):
Man, I'm only good on the Lions. We'll get to
that eventually. The point is here, guys, wouldn't be a
surprise if the Phillies lost this series. Yeah it would.
But the d Backs again, they've got a path here.
The next two games are much more heavily involved by
the bullpens. The d Backs bullpen is as rested as
(10:41):
you can be because they haven't had to throw a
lot of their main guys in the last couple of days,
so they're good to go. To me. The Diamondbacks, they
need to get Carol and Marte active early in the
game on the basis, and then let that good run
of right handed bats Tommy fam and Walker and others
let them try to go to work against the left
(11:02):
hander Suarez. There's a path there, one hundred percent. I mean,
it would not surprise me at all to see the
d Backs win Game three. I think winning the whole
series will be a challenge, but this this series is
a long way from over.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
To your point about the rest in bullpen, how how
aggressive is lavoul Love tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (11:20):
We have to be I mean well, but I mean in.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Terms of, you know, the bullpen management just right off the.
Speaker 4 (11:24):
Jump, right.
Speaker 5 (11:25):
I think Brandon Fott probably if he if he gets
through four innings, that's that's a very good start in
my opinion. If his if his line is four innings
to earned runs, he's done his job. He's given them
a chance because this team has been the Phillies have
been so hot that they were there today a little
(11:48):
bit took some infield. Didn't even hit on the field,
to be honest, they were just they had to just
kind of come in, get get used to the environment
a little bit, and then go out and have dinner
and get ready for tomorrow. I mean, they're they're locked in.
The Phillies are feeling pretty good and they should and
now it's just a matter for the Diamondbacks finding a
way to just keep them off balanced for a couple
(12:08):
times through the lineup with Fot on the mound, and
then if they can do that, bring in the relievers
see a heavy dose of Ryan Thompson and Ginkle salf
Frank who was able to get into Game two, and
then certainly you've got Paul ce Wald Laate. So I
think this team overall the dbacks already the roadmap is there,
and the roadmap involves I think no more than two
(12:29):
times to the lineup for young Brandon fot Okay.
Speaker 4 (12:32):
So we're looking at a live bug in Arizona. On
the NL side, Astros shown some life battling back from
a two to zero start in their series. When you
think about the World Series, and I know you call
this straight and I know that you're not rooting for
anybody or any matchup in particular JP, but just from
(12:54):
a pure matchup standpoint, to your eye and your expert
baseball QD, of the four teams left, what's the best
matchup in the World Series.
Speaker 5 (13:05):
This will sound entirely, entirely unsurprising, probably, but it's the
same one that we had last year. I really believe that.
I think Houston is a team that just is still
polarizing years later and yet have a lot of names
that we know and people who have strong followings. In
(13:28):
terms of strong opinions, around the country and around the
baseball world. You'll have Verlander. I mean, who would not
want to see in terms of a neutral observer, justin
Verlander versus Bryce Harper matchup with Game seven of the
World Series on the line, generational talents, and the Phillies
have multiple All Stars, obviously potential Hall of Famers on
(13:50):
their roster, different positions. The Diamondbacks are they can still
spoil this for sure, and the Rangers, listen, they still
have a two to one series lead, but I think
that we saw with Schuerzer tonight that there are some
vulnerabilities there for the Rangers and they're gonna have to
really rely you know, Ivaldi is gonna need to be
(14:10):
immense for the rest of this series. And it's like
the Houston Astros. It'd be like, how worried if the
San Antonio Spurs in the in the heyday of Duncan
and Parkridge and Nobili and ri if they were ever
down three, two or two to one, were they ever
really worried? I mean, they might they might not win
(14:31):
every series, but they never seemed worried. And that's and
that's the vibe I get with Houston. They're just not
worried that they They never get worried, and they shouldn't
because the moment is never too big.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
For them, all right, they gotta just make mention. Dusty
Baker says he's got his Game four starter, and then
he asked if the Rangers had named theirs. When informed
they had not, he declined the name the Astros Game
four starters. So gamesmanship from the veterans. I love it.
Speaker 5 (14:57):
That's what it should be.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
No, look, I love it.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
Use it.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
That's right, absolutely, and looky, I'd be remiss if I
didn't also make mention of that home run that Alvarez
was robbed of in the sixth inning. I thought that
was going to be the catalyst for the Rangers.
Speaker 5 (15:12):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 6 (15:13):
Yeah, that was.
Speaker 5 (15:14):
It was a great play. And obviously Josh Young a
pair of two run homers. Tavaris is just an exquisite
defender in center field. There's a lot of talent on
both sides, and obviously Odolis Carcia. I think one of
the plays that we need to talk about a lot
is Michael Brandley going all the way into the gap
to take extra base. Changes the game right there if
(15:35):
that ball falls in. So just some really cool moments
in this game. To talk about it, I think Dusty
this is not his first playoff series, nor is it
Bochi's first playoff series. And this is where when you
got when you have a series at two to one
and there's a little bit of uncertainty, who's going to
start Game four on potentially both sides get ready because
(15:57):
it's going to be entertaining. And that's that's where the
Diamondbacks are one win away from making this interesting. Because
game four, if both teams are thinking bullpend game, it's
a coin flip. You just you never know how it's
gonna go. And so that's why, really and truly Arizona
is one game away from this becoming a very different series.
Speaker 3 (16:17):
JP no analysis. What's the score of Lions Ravens.
Speaker 5 (16:21):
Detroit Lions twenty eight, Baltimore Ravens twenty four.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
Ooh, the legend continues. He is the our Lions insider,
also Major League Baseball, the NHL. He does it all.
MLB Networks own John Paul Morosi. Follow him on Twitter
at John Morosi JP. Thanks as always for your time, brother,
enjoy the night. We look forward to catching up with
you as the series develop.
Speaker 5 (16:48):
Sounds great Mike and Rich always enjoy the conversation and Rich,
good luck to your Nitney Lions on Saturday.
Speaker 6 (16:53):
Should be a great one.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
Here we go, getting that college football preview in there
as well. Good times from the IRAQ dot Com Fox
Sports Radio Studios. He's Rich Hornberger. I'm Mike Carmon coming
back as we continue. Are six games into our NFL season. Yeah,
third of the way. The most anonymous would be contender
or are they a pretender? We'll talk about it next
(17:16):
here on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
Welcome back in Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with
me by Carmon Now Jason Smith. Tonight, it's our buddy
Rich Hornberger in instead X of the NFL. You see
him on Collins Couch dissecting everything across the National Football League.
You hear him seven to sixty down in San Diego,
and hear on Fox Sports Radio weekends as well, countdown
(17:51):
to kickoff as he gives you some wagering advice and
analysis of those teams heading into the big Saturday slate,
and as John Palm Morosi did lay out, You've got
a big one for your squad. You'r Nitny lyons this weekend. Rich.
Speaker 4 (18:09):
So the Buck guys, the Buck guys, the Buck guys,
the Buck guys. Look, I'm not going to I'm not
going to divide our audience because I do know that
out in the Midwest many who are listening to this show,
they ascribe to the Crimson in Silver. I get it,
I get it. Not everybody's perfect, you know, not everybody
(18:32):
can be a Nickney Lion fan.
Speaker 3 (18:34):
Ohio State four and a half point favorites in this week.
Speaker 4 (18:37):
Yeah, and I get it. And look neutral Site, it's
basically a pick em.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
Ye.
Speaker 4 (18:41):
I think you probably give Ohio State with the big
noon kickoff on Fox, you know, the edge there with
the three home points, maybe even a half point for
being home as well. I look at it this way.
If Penn State can get in what's the quarterback's name, McCord,
if they could get in Cord's kitchen and rattle as
(19:02):
cage earlie, this could be an ugly day for the
Buck guys. And that's a real defense. Like Penn State's
got a real defense. They are hard to throw against.
That's a pretty good pass rush, So we'll see. I mean,
I give the buck guys obviously a chance. They have
talent everywhere you look around that field. But this is
(19:22):
the biggest game a young quarterback has ever played in.
There's no question about that. We'll see how he.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
Does second and third rank scoring defenses respectively, the Penn
State second, Ohio State coming in at third. And yeah,
McCord versus l R, I mean this could be fun.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
Yeah, yeah, it'll be both both.
Speaker 3 (19:41):
Of them who really make me feel old. When I
look at their pictures and see their birthdays, it's like,
that's the worst. Now, rich, When you open a box
of baseball cards, I just said, a delivery that I've
been waiting on for a while. I pulled the kid
the catcher for the Padres who everybody's chasing Ethan Salas,
all right, and so seventeen years old. I pulled a
(20:02):
numbered card and I looked at its values, like, wow,
it's worth far more than the box that I bought,
which is great, But you start looking at the back
of these cards, and these guys' birthdays are like six right, right,
Whereas I just turned fifty, So I you know, I
feel like an old man as I'm watching some of
these games, like that distance between me and the and
(20:25):
the aptology age and the athletes is growing by the day.
Speaker 4 (20:28):
Well, you know what you're you're you're preaching the choir here,
because that's why I need Brady to stay active, man. Yeah, yeah,
he's my only hope. That's exactly right. You need Rogers
to hang around. He needs to come back from this
Achilles ten and Tearor.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
You can cheer for Rogers. I can't do it well.
And it's got nothing to do with any of his beliefs.
He's just a former packer and now he plays for
the Jets. Do you think I want Jason Smith to
have happiness with his Jets?
Speaker 4 (20:54):
And I was gonna say no, it would bridge a
mile wide gap between you and your co host. But
I don't know. I don't know if you can really
swallow that level of pride to appease.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
No, no chance, No no, no, that's that's not good
for anybody.
Speaker 4 (21:08):
No, no, no, no, no. I like the friction. I
like the friction, Michael.
Speaker 3 (21:12):
Now, there's got to be a little bit of angst
in it's otherwise I mean, what are we what are
we doing? I mean, that's what sports talk radio is
all about, There's no question about it. As we come
to you live from the tirerac dot Com Fox Sports
Radio Studios doing a little bit of a looking back
of the first six weeks of the NFL season, rich
And and your brain child here of some of the
(21:33):
the good, the bad, the ugly. We did, the washed,
we did some of the big surprises to start the season.
How about to this point where we have we've broken
down some of the big efforts from squads thus far.
Is there a team that just screams out the great
pretender like Freddie Mercury is gonna go around and start
singing that song classic song?
Speaker 4 (21:54):
Yeah? Yeah, I mean they're a couple. I mean, when
you really think about where some of these franchises start,
did him where they're at at this point? I'm not
sold that the Buffalo Bills can navigate the rest of
their schedule without without screwing things up royally. I mean,
if you if you really take a close look at
(22:14):
at this team, they've they've suffered some injuries. Yeah, I mean,
they they've suffered injuries. You can't suffer if you want
to win a Super Bowl, and I mean it's Week six. Ever,
I I just I think the Buffalo Bills have they
have multiple so they lose stay ball, which is a
brain trust. On offense, Josh Allen had his first shaky
(22:36):
year since his rookie year. There was definite regression this season.
He's been hot and cold. I think that whatever it is,
the mojo that existed there between he and and b
D doesn't exist with him and Ken Dorsey. I just
it's just different. He looks different and and I think
(22:58):
sometimes is what you know when you can tell a
quarterback is running a play he likes, it's when his feet.
His feet tell you that he likes the play that's
being called, that he's comfortable with the play that's called.
Right the protections there. But sometimes you see happy feet
in the pocket. Sure, when you see happy feet in
(23:19):
the pocket, it means I don't like this. I'm not
comfortable with this play. I don't like this play. I
don't like where I'm supposed to go with the football
I need out. It makes you, as a viewer uncomfortable
watch a quarterback's lower body. Josh Allen is more uncomfortable
in the pocket than he is comfortable, So put him
in that category, put the whole team in that category
(23:40):
as a potential pretender. I'll give you another one, the
Dallas Cowboys, and for similar reasons. Watch Dak's lower body.
It tells you a story. Dak Prescott, through the majority
of his game so far this season, has not looked
comfortable in the pocket, even when he has a clean pocket,
and that's been the majority of the season. He's got
a pretty good offensive line, Dak doesn't look like he's
(24:03):
comfortable in a lot of the plays that he's running
with Mike McCarthy. Remember he worked with more for years
before he was shipped out to go to the Los
Angeles Chargers to be their new OC. I think there
was a growing trust in that relationship. I don't think
it was always great, but he has a new voice
in the headset. Changes were made this offseason, and I
(24:24):
look at the Dallas Cowboys as an unstable offensive franchise
right now.
Speaker 3 (24:30):
Yeah, even you went so far as to use the
term bumslayer just because you know it was fun with
the teams that they were beating off the jump, right.
The Giants are a disaster. I had great expectations, but
a lot of that predicated on Saquon Barkley being healthy,
Paller being a difference maker, and that the volume of
wide receivers one of those guys would emerge and none
(24:54):
of that happened. Add to that, as we've talked about
the turnstyle offensive line and Daniel Jones, I don't know
how much you can pin on him. Was he has
he been good? No, nobody's gonna claim that. But how
much of that is where we're at as a squad altogether,
even with Dable running things, because clearly he and Tarrod
Taylor don't call him Tyrod Collinsworth Tarrod Taylor clearly not
(25:17):
on the same page. There you talk about Buffalo and
they're the curiosity. A couple of the interceptions from Josh
Allen look like the old all right, we're gonna punt anyway. Yeah,
you yell punt check and you throw it downfield. Maybe
your guy makes it play, maybe he doesn't. And if
it's an interception, it's intercepted inside the ten. As long
as the guy doesn't get a chance to get a
(25:39):
clean return back to the thirty or forty, no harm,
no foul. Yeah, he'll take the interception and move on.
So you've got a couple of those in the books,
but the run game is still sporadic. At best. Cook
is averaging four and at four point eight, but they
don't trust him on the field, as evidenced by the
existence of Latavia's Marie Damien Harris got hurt and then
(26:00):
you've got Digs and Davis and nothing else. The dual
tight end position that you thought was going to be
such a boon for you in Kincaid Knocks. They can't
stay healthy and they've been invisible in the pass game.
Speaker 4 (26:15):
I'll give you one more. The Chargers. The Chargers, they.
Speaker 3 (26:18):
Deserve their own therapy session of an hour.
Speaker 4 (26:21):
Oh my goodness. So Vegas had them pegged as a
nine and a half win team, And if I went
to the window with money, I would have taken the
over and I was sold to Bill of Wrights because
they did what they do to us every offseason. They
present a super Bowl winning roster and in actuality when
the games start being played, they're going toe to toe
(26:44):
with I mean, the dregs of the NFL and barely
surviving it on the road in Minnesota. I mean, this
team should have handled the Minnesota Vikings. They didn't. It's
disappointing to a degree that's that's hard to describe considering
how much talent they have around that roster and how
(27:05):
far they've already underperformed. Now, I don't know what the
rest of the season is going to look like for
the Chargers. They lose that game to the Dallas Cowboys,
it could turn into maybe a draw line in the
sand moment for them, and maybe Brandon Staley turns it
around as a decision maker and starts making better decisions,
(27:25):
and this team has a real mirror moment where they
all look at themselves and decide to turn it up
a couple notches. But my guess is this is going
to be another hovering around five hundred season for the Chargers.
It may be just passable to keep Brandon Staley on
the staff as a head coach for a lame duck year,
(27:47):
and it's just going to be a slog toward the inevitable,
which is going to be a change at the top.
And they have their franchise quarterback but not much to
show for it. And Justin Herbert's going to walk a
very similar pat that Philip Rivers walked for almost two
or I shouldn't say two decades, but for a decade
and a half.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
Yeah, Herbert's a guy that I think is an interesting
discussion point. We did a little of it Monday night
as that game was going on live, because at some
point you got to raise the hand and he's got
his fourth quarter comebacks. Okay, fine, but he's also got
a number of miscues and missed opportunities. And because there's
a like of him, his game, his demeanor, the guy
(28:29):
doesn't really much care for the camera at all. That
is well established shows up in commercials, but even then
he doesn't look like he wants to be there. It's like, wait,
they're gonna pay me to what to stand here? Okay? Cool,
but like not a guy that really wants to do
a lot in the way of press availability and look
at me kind of moments. But he kind of gets
a bit of a pass I think, given his coach
(28:52):
and some of the more glaring issues, like you wouldn't
put him on the metal stand of problems, but certainly
there have been opportunities lost and you could put them
squarely on his shoulders.
Speaker 4 (29:03):
Well you look at game logs, right, and he's a
consistent performer this season and last season. I think his
play has and will continue to until he's on the
other side of this most recent injury. But his play
suppresses when he's injured. He had the rib injury. I
think it was Week two of last season, and it
(29:25):
took him a while to recover from that, but played
throughout the whole way. He broke his finger against the Raiders,
his worst rated game or one of his worst rated
game games of his career, came back in the game,
fought through that injury and looked different. I mean there's
no question about it. I mean objectively different than he
normally looks in a game against the Cowboys and still
(29:48):
gave his team a chance to win. And a lot
of people will say, well, he fractured a finger on
his non throwing hand. You're making excuses for him. It
affects everything. Like imagine your quarterback, right, and you're the
type of guy six foot six, you know, big old boy,
two hundred thirty five, two hundred and forty pounds. You
like to hang in the pocket until the last second.
(30:09):
You don't mind getting popped under the chin or the
chin strap because you want to deliver the football downfield.
But all of a sudden, that other arm that you
typically reach out to brace your fall with has a
fractured middle finger. It just changes your whole outlook on
how to protect yourself in game. It changes your game completely.
(30:30):
So yeah, don't give me this, hey, non throwing side
hand injury shouldn't have no, no, no, Also, you can't
operate from under center. You can't be trusted to take
snaps from under center because what happens if they reinjure
that finger on the center quarterback exchange. So it makes
your offense a little bit more one dimensional going from
the gun. But even if he is going to be
(30:50):
a sub sixty percent completion guy through the next two weeks,
I'd rather put Herbert out there than anything else you
have on the bench because that's your best opportunity to win.
And he's eventually going to be healthy. But again, Ken,
he outshined poor coaching decisions by Brandon Staley. So far,
the answer has been no. They have netted zero playoff
(31:13):
wins since he's been the quarterback of the team.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
At Warnberger where you find him on Twitter, find me
over at Swollen Dome. Coming up. We'll continue in our
third of the season awards and breakdowns. But first we've
got our good friend Manzi Belgias to update you on
everything that is transpired in our sporting universe.
Speaker 7 (31:33):
I don't have any more pursuits happening, but I do
have some NFL news guy guys. All right, So today
the Jets traded wide receiver Nicole Hardman back to the
Kansas City Chiefs. Dolphin's cornerback Jalen Ramsey returned to practice today,
less than three months after having miniska surgery for a
training camp knee injury. Head coach Mike McDaniel says that
(31:54):
they're cautiously optimistic that he's going to be going to
be back before their.
Speaker 8 (31:57):
Week ten bye.
Speaker 7 (31:59):
And running back Hyron Williams has an ankle injury.
Speaker 8 (32:02):
He's expected to miss multiple games.
Speaker 7 (32:05):
A couple of quarterbacks did not practice today, like Las
Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo he's got a back issue.
Brown's quarterback Deshan Watson has a shoulder issue.
Speaker 8 (32:14):
His status for Sunday is up in the air.
Speaker 7 (32:16):
And Bears quarterback Justin Fields a right thumb injury. He
is doubtful four Week seven, which kicks off tomorrow. It's
ready tomorrow on the East Coast, not here yet. Thursday
Night football Jaguars and Saints. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence. He
wants to play, but is questionable with a slight knee sprain.
It's not bad, but they just start being cautious about it.
(32:37):
In the NBA, James Harden did not show up to
seventy six ers practice today. Apparently he hasn't been with
the team since Sunday. With a good team player. He's
currently in Houston, a good team player. NBA commissure Adam
Silver said the league is considering going back to the
East versus West format for the All Star Game.
Speaker 8 (32:54):
I like that. I'm into that go back old school
I do. I like that idea.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
I even let the joke about guys being and playing
with their team off. Rich is wearing a Clipper shirt today.
Speaker 4 (33:06):
Oh please, Bonzi rubbed in her face all the time. Yes,
it's the strangest thing. It's the weirdest flex. She was like,
look at the new Clippers swag. I'm like Sazis, nobody cares.
Speaker 7 (33:17):
Nobody cares, mich I care if they do go back
to East versus West. I also want them all to
wear their jerseys like for their team.
Speaker 8 (33:27):
Okay, not the East and a Westers.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
Oh, I actually do agree with that. I think it's
lame when they don't wear.
Speaker 8 (33:33):
Yeah, where the jersey of your team? I always liked that.
I miss that.
Speaker 7 (33:38):
In Major League Baseball, the Astros took down the Rangers
in Game three of the ALCS.
Speaker 8 (33:43):
Eighty five was the final score.
Speaker 7 (33:44):
Max Shuers are back on the mound for the Rangers
after missing the last month or so.
Speaker 8 (33:48):
He pitched four.
Speaker 7 (33:49):
Innings, gave up five hits and five earned runs. The manager,
Bruce Bochi, has no regrets.
Speaker 6 (33:55):
Yeah, let him do it again. He's one of our guys.
We had them ready face hitters. We did all we
could to get him ready for this. He was ready.
You saw this stuff, So yeah, he's one of our guys.
So no, there's no.
Speaker 7 (34:09):
Regret, not one letter, No regrets. Las Vegas Aces repeats
WNBA champions for the first time since two thousand and two,
beating the New York Liberty seventy to sixty nine.
Speaker 3 (34:21):

Speaker 3 (35:30):
Hi, this is Jay Glazer.
Speaker 9 (35:31):
And you may know me for the world of football
or fighting or even shows like HBO's Bawlers. Who you
don't know is for my entire life. I have lived
in something I refer to as the gray depression anxiety.
So now I'm coming out with a new podcast, Unbreakable,
a mental health podcast with Jay Glazer, where each week,
while we talk about mental health, I hope to describe it,
(35:53):
give it words. Listen to Unbreakable with Jay Glazer on
the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
Welcome back in Jason Smiths Show with Me Mike Harman
live from the tyrac dot Com Studios. No Smith Tonight,
Rich Ornberger in his stead at Ornberger where you find
him in the Twitter Verse. Coming up in ten minutes,
we'll revisit the League Championships series, continue talking NFL. So
(36:25):
many big games and storylines heading into week seven, so
plenty of that. And we'll remember a legend with one
of the greatest clips of all and I'll tell you
how it relates to my family as I pay tribute
to one of the legends in my family as well
as you start laughing because you know exactly the clip.
(36:46):
We will hear a little bit later on to pay
tribute to this legend. But Rich, when we get through
the first six weeks and you've got some early season surprises,
and I guess it comes down to you know, you
have the anonymous right you mentioned a couple of teams
that you're just thinking, I don't know long term how
(37:06):
this works. Right, you talk about Buffalo with Milano and
White being hurt, a running game that's sporadic and obviously
a little bit of descent between your quarterback and his
OC some of these other teams. I'm looking at it,
and Monzy brought it up because Week seven starts tomorrow.
We've got the Jaguars and we'll wait until game time
(37:27):
to find out whether it's Trevor Lawrence or CJ. Bethert
seeing if he can top the output that they had
at Iowa and have for all these years. You know,
there's a contract tied to the current OC there in
terms of points per game that he has to put up,
and they are nowhere close yet they still could be
a playoff team out of the Big ten. How crazy
is this world? But anyway, Jaguars with ETN has been
(37:51):
fantastic and they were a team. Look, I put them
in as my Super Bowl contender coming out of the AFC,
thinking the path of least resistance is that division, and
then Houston's been game. Eventually, they're gonna have a full
offensive line in front of CJ. Stroud, which will be
interesting to watch. But the other side of it, I'd
(38:13):
almost rather watch paint dry than watch the Saints right now.
There have been terrible. Like defensively, they get after it,
which we expected a lot of people on board. They're
three and three, so it could be a lot worse.
But offensively, you've got a lave, You've got Kamara comes back.
Lines had their issue. I mean that's the common theme
for pretty much every team. Can you get five guys
(38:35):
that know each other's names, or do you have to
go find your own Justin Pugh to get him off
of the couch to play for you and then be
your best lineman? How about that statistically? But for the Saints,
I mean, Derek Carr's not a guy that I've ever
really trusted, but I thought the offense would at least
be somewhat more robust through the first six weeks of
(38:57):
the season.
Speaker 4 (38:58):
Yeah, clearly there's a Anjuman period. I can't remember if
they officially added him to the staff, but John Gruden even.
Speaker 3 (39:07):
Spent times, right, he's hanging around there.
Speaker 4 (39:09):
In New Orleans. Yeah, maybe they hired him on as
an analyst to kind of help bridge the gap between
what he was in Las Vegas and what he's becoming
in New Orleans. Now you also throw into the picture,
like you said, this is a Saints team that's gonna go.
It's they're intentionally going to try to win ugly because
(39:30):
as as he gets caught up offensively, this defense is
too good to try to squander what could be a
really nice season for the Saints, you know, I mean,
they absolutely laid it on the New England Patriots. But
outside that game, it's been a whole bunch of sixteen
fifteen victory over the Titans, twenty to seventeen win over
(39:52):
the Carolina Panthers yuck, eighteen seventeen loss to the Green
Bay Packers.
Speaker 3 (39:59):
Game they led so seventeen to nothing.
Speaker 4 (40:01):
Right, Yeah, I mean, and by the way, their most
recent loss twenty to thirteen lost to the Houston Texans.
Like this is just how the season's gonna look for
the Saints until they start putting things together offensively, because
I understand I understand what Allen's doing as a head coach.
He's saying, hey, look, offense, hold on to the football
(40:21):
as long as you can, don't make the mistakes that
are gonna cost us games. Let us do the majority
of the work and try to steal possessions back for
you and score just enough to keep us afloat, and
we'll take care of the rest. That I mean. It's
very BILLCHECKI Bill BELICHICKI and in approach. And I don't
know if that necessarily works. It's we'll see, but I
(40:45):
will say this, it's it's probably the only route they
can traverse at this point.
Speaker 3 (40:50):
Now. We talked about Belichickian. It's one of my favorite words, right,
like a Schwarzenegarian when we talk about bringing Arnold Schwarzenegger
theories into your life. Always work for balance and definition.
He's got a new book out. We're efforting his people
to see if we can't get him to show up here.
There it is. I did it on national radio too, Arnold.
(41:10):
If you're listening, let's go. Saints are ruling out to
Ots tomorrow Ramchick and Hurst are both out and Landing
Young is out as well at their top backups. So
good luck we'll get We'll be here live and in
living color starting at seven pm Pacific time to break
down that game as we flow. But I do want
(41:31):
to get back to the Patriots, Rich. I think that
deserves a longer look, see from a guy that was
in the building to try to talk. I know you
talk with Steve about it, and certainly when you're trying
to avoid remembering the season that was for the Padres,
maybe you start waxing nostalgic on the airwaves there in
San Diego. But I feel like it's something we need
(41:51):
to do. As we come to live fromthetyraq dot com studios,
Final Hour is coming up at Hornberger where you find
Rich on Twitter over at Swollen Dome. You've got thoughts,
lay them out there. You've got questions for Rich about
how to fix the Patriots or your fantasy team. Maybe
we can get into that next on Fox
